Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE -Backyard poultry ownership is a growing phenomenon in recent years as Americans have taken control over their family meals with an all-natural, homegrown food source. Now experts say more and more people are making the jump into backyard poultry for an added benefit: family time. Raising poultry is an ideal activity to promote bonding and interactive educational experiences for the entire family. “I’ve been raising chicks with my family for the past year, and I can already see the benefits it’s instilling beyond our backyard — just like what I repeatedly

important lessons in responsibility, reaping the rewards of hard work, and how to eat well and live sustainably.” To help families get started raising poultry, Tractor Supply is hosting Chick Days at stores nationwide, including the Mechanicsville location, through April 29. The 10-week springtime event features live baby chicks and ducklings along with the supplies and expertise needed to begin or grow a backyard flock. “As parents, it’s our job to teach our children personal responsibility and healthy behaviors,” said Green. “Raising backyard poultry provides parents with so many teachable moments, like collecting the eggs, caring for live animals and proper handling guidelines — including the importance of washing your hands — to ensure the safety of your flock and yourself.” New this year to Chick Days, families can get started with backyard poultry by purchas-
ing a minimum of four chicks in select states with the flexibility to mix and match with ducklings. In addition to purchasing chicks and ducklings on-site, the event features a one-stop shop for all the items needed to begin the process, including starter kits, feed, bedding, heat bulbs and lamps, coops, and more, along with the guidance of expert Tractor Supply team members. Outside of Chick Days, Tractor Supply stores are stocked year-round with the items needed to properly raise and care for backyard poultry. Enthusiasts can visit TractorSupply.com/Poultry for an expanded selection and yearround availability of poultry products and live birds. Visit TractorSupply.com/ Chicks for expert information on safe handling and care for poultry, building a chicken coop, and more. Backyard poultry rules and regulations vary by city, county and state, so check with your local government before purchasing.

Standing your ground can pay off By Melody Kinser Managing Editor With some extended family members making daily appearances to protest at the State Capitol in Charleston, West Virginia, I kept a keen eye on the strike spearheaded by teachers. Talk about perseverance. For eight days, all 55 counties were represented by teachers demanding better pay. In the nation, West Virginia teacher pay ranked 48th out of 51 (Washington, D.C., is included in the state ranking). Oklahoma, Mississippi and South Dakota came in behind the Mountain State. Last Tuesday, the Legislature finally agreed to the pay increase of 5% -- but it’s for all state employees, not just the teachers. Having grown up in the coalfields, this was reminiscent of the Coal Wars that took place in
and around Logan County, where I was raised. The Battle of Blair Mountain, considered the largest labor uprising in United States history, took place in that county in 1921. Strikes by the United Mine Workers (UMW) were common throughout my years there. The union had a strong voice and influence then. What happened last week in Charleston may be a signal that being united -- whether in the organized union sense or not -- is making a comeback. West Virginia teachers received support from other states in their quest for what they believed to be a reasonable request in pay. On Monday, March 5, a teacher organization from the San Francisco sent $11,000 to purchase 500 pizzas for the West Virginians striking. I’m not going to get into any pros or cons about
unionization. I grew up in a union (IBEW) home but I’ve always been a company employee, and in management since 1981. There were thousands of teachers filling the grounds of the Capitol, as well as inside while delegates and senators debated their futures. I would hope their return is with a great fervor for the students who need them at their best. Stand up. Speak up. Don’t give up. I wouldn’t be surprised if some legislators find themselves unseated in the next election. This holdout got ugly quick. Those in education, public safety and emergency services definitely deserve the raise. Hats off to the teachers for showing strength in numbers. Politicians need to remember: They work for us. West Virginia teachers proved it.
Arming teachers: Can we talk about this? By Roslyn Ryan Richmond Suburban News In the days following Feb. 14, as the terrible reality of what had happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School began to sink in, it wasn’t hard to find someone with an opinion on what could have been done differently, or what might have helped spare the
lives of the 17 children who were lost in one of the worst school shootings in American history. It also didn’t take long for one popular refrain to once again begin popping up in headlines, editorials and social media posts. I’m speaking, here, about the notion that arming school faculty or staff members could be a potential

The idea was already appearing to gain some traction in certain circles last week before President Trump lent it his apparent stamp of approval. Predictably, the backlash was
swift, including a veritable avalanche of op-ed pieces deriding the idea as somewhere on the spectrum between idiocy and lunacy. Before I go any further, one quick note: If the sun came up today, I probably found something to disagree with President Trump about — and arming see ARMING, pg. 7

Renaming schools should keep all students in mind (Editor’s note: The following letter was addressed to the Hanover County Public Schools superintendent and Hanover County School Board members.) I would like to express to each of you some factors I believe to be worthy of consideration throughout this process: 1. As far back as I can remember, the mission of Hanover County Public Schools has been to provide the safest and best facilities and environment for learning and educating all students. a. This point is a critical factor to cite, as equal to the procedures used in the redrawing of district lines when new schools are in consideration. b. Additionally, this key factor is consistently utilized when developing more inclusive programs for Children with Special Needs. c. Ultimately, Hanover County administrators and Hanover County Public Schools honor a purpose to provide what is best for all to learn and participate in educational settings. d. An 8:1 ratio in the current petition in Hanover County should not be a deciding factor. [This is not a case of “If it’s not broken and doesn’t need fixing;” this is a case of “It’s broken and needs fixing.”]. 2. Four Hanover County Elementary School principals who spoke at the Feb. 13, 2018, meeting shared that there are thirty-two (32) languages for which they must prepare to teach. a. Statistical data indicates that we are becoming a diverse and multicultural community. b. If elementary American history teaches a neutral portrait of the Civil War, why promote a favored image of one side over the other, by naming a see LETTERS, pg. 7

teachers is one you can add to the list. I don’t think it is a particularly workable solution for a number of reasons, including the fact that it seems far, far too much to ask of our teachers. That said, I must admit to a welling sense of irritation last week as I read the barrage of vitriol directed at those who suggested allowing — or asking —education professionals to carry. No, I don’t love the idea. But, for the love of all things holy, is there really anything wrong with bringing the subject forward for discussion? Is it entirely impossible that we might rationally weigh the pros and cons of an idea and perhaps use it as a jumping off point that could lead to an actual solution? Could it possibly be that the reason the problem of gun violence in this country never seems to get any better is that, at
the mere mention of something they find objectionable, both sides close ranks, stop listening, and hurl rocks at each other? It is my deeply held belief that the solution to ending school shootings lies in a combination of tougher school security measures, better training in how to identify and intercept students with mental health problems and/or violent tendencies, and overall improvements to current gun regulations. That said, I also know that I am a newspaper editor, not a public policy specialist, or an educator, or a parent of schoolage children. And I know all of those people have valuable insight into how this problem can be solved, whether we agree with their initial assessments or not. We’re not going to erase the horrors of school violence overnight, but somewhere, somehow, there has to be a fix. I’m all ears. Roslyn Ryan is editor of The Goochland Gazette.

Teacher/community leader announces town council bid Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND -- Daniel W. McGraw, a Patrick Henry High School Latin teacher and community leader, has announced his candidacy for Ashland Town Council. McGraw said he loves Ashland’s traditional family-oriented way of life, and looks to development of the town’s computer technology capacity to ensure a prosperous future. He received his B.A. from Randolph Macon College, holds a Master’s Degree from VCU and is in the final stages of earning a doctorate at Liberty University in Educational Leadership. McGraw moved to Ashland in 1992, met and married his wife, Tennylle Sheffield, and raised four daughters in Ashland. “I cannot think of a better place to raise a family or a better place to retire. We must also make it the best place to open a business,” McGraw said. McGraw, who said he has extensive knowl-
edge of distance learning and computer technology, said he believes one of the things Ashland must do, and do quickly, is improve the town’s internet access and data options. “In order for the Town of Ashland to remain the Ashland that the retirees remember and the millennials can embrace, we need access to high-speed fiber lines,” said McGraw. “The current providers have expressed no desire to open these lines. But Ashland has the unique McGRAW ability to bring in these Photo courtesy of Kellie West Watson lines on its own, opening the door to invite the The winners and runners-up in the Hanover Idol 2018 and Hanover Junior Idol 2018 competitions latest types of businesses. Hanover Idol and Junior Idol, who entertained the audiences during the judges’ deliberations. The 23 finalists who sang on March 4 were selected by audition judges on Jan. 20 from a talented group of over 45 singers. Eleven younger finalists (between 10 to 15 years old) competed in the Hanover Junior Idol Competition. The audience heard a variety of song selections from “Colors of the Windâ€? to “Eye of the Tiger.â€? Twelve finalists (16 years old and older) competed in the Hanover Idol Competition. The audience members were treated to songs such as “Sound of Silenceâ€? and “Don’t Rain on My Parade.â€? Everyone who heard the finalists on March 4 agreed that the difficult decisions the Celebrity Judges had to make to choose the winners. Throughout the day, people
back stage said, “I am glad I am not a judge. I could not choose just one winner. Cox, the newly crowned Hanover Junior Idol, is a ninthgrader at Hanover High School, who performs with various theatre companies around the area. Madison recently was cast as “Mary Poppins in the Center Players’ production of “Mary Poppins, which will be produced this summer at the Hanover Tavern. She sings with SPARC’s Spotlight Ensemble at various nursing homes, homeless shelters and veterans hospitals. She regularly performs the “National Anthem at sporting events around the state. Madison’s version of “Someone Like You from “Jekyll and Hyde apparently convinced the audience that Madison will someday fulfill her dream of singing on Broadway. Nicholas, the Junior Idol Runner Up, is a sophomore at Atlee High School where he
sings in Illusion, the school’s show choir. He also performs with the Center Players, and will be featured in “Mary Poppinsâ€? at the Hanover Tavern. Nicholas, the first singer on the afternoon’s program, wowed the audience with “From Now Onâ€? from “The Greatest Showman.â€? There is such good talent here, and I look forward to entertaining everybody in Hanover County for the next two years.” Hicks, the Runner-Up for Hanover Idol, performed five minutes of song and theatre with her Nina Simone version of “I Put a Spell on You.” Alena is a sophomore at Patrick Henry High School where she sings in two choirs, Sounds and Essence. She regularly performs in the Ashland Musical Variety Show, and she said she is excited to be cast as the Wardrobe in “Beauty
and the Beast,” which will be produced this spring at Patrick Henry. She said, “After seeing “The Lion King” on Broadway, I really want to be Rafiki on Broadway!” Since 2007, 2008 and every even year since, the Hanover Arts & Activities Center has sponsored the Hanover Idols’ competition, produced by Lorie Foley and Sue Watson, with Fred Horn as Music Director. The goal of the competition is to showcase the talented singers in Hanover County and to inspire the finalists with affirmative and supportive coaching. Above, the big question for Atlee head coach Tom McIntyre, shown here getting drenched after the Raiders defeated Lee-Davis in the VHSL Group 5A state championship game last year, is whether the Raiders have enough big guns to claim a fourth-straight title. Right, Peyton St. George, who hit a home run against the Confederates in the title game, will no longer plague Lee-Davis.
defense. “We lost what I think is maybe one of the best senior classes ever to come through Hanover County,” said Atlee head coach Tom McIntyre. “Peyton St. George, Casey Barrett and Kelly Warren are all playing at the Division I level and doing great right now. Of course, losing Amanda
Bohannon behind the plate so we have to fill that. It’s just a fantastic group of kids and hard to replace.” But not impossible to replace: junior Rachel Davis and senior Sydney Kuester are capable of filling St. George’s shoes on the mound. Senior Emily Friel will handle catching duties, and sophomore Alyssa
Bernardini and freshman Kelly Ayer can take over at second base. The only player returning in midfield is shortstop Jordan Durbin, but she should pack a wallop. “We know Jordan Durbin is going to step up,” McIntyre said. “That’s a big bat right in the heart of our lineup. She can
do a lot for us.” Still, the Raider offense may have to change some from what it tried to do in recent year. “We’re taking what the team gives us,” McIntyre said. “We’re going to be explosive at times. We’re going to be strategic at times. We’ll have a pretty balanced attack.” Among the newcomers who
Lee-Davis The Confederates, who last won a state championship in 2011, kept running into Atlee in the state semifinals until both teams postponed their by-now annual date until the championship game last year. Head coach Jackie Davis hopes the graduation of St. George – who twice beat Lee-Davis by scoring Atlee’s only run last year – gives them a better opening for a title. Head coach Jackie Davis expects the Confederate offense will be Lee-Davis’ biggest asset. “We look good offensively. We’ve still got a lot of power in

Can Hawks punch return ticket to states? but he expects that situation will improve in the next few weeks. “If we can get healthy, we can be pretty good,” Dragum said. “We’re looking for two corner outfielders to give us consistent play. If we can get that, we should be pretty strong.” One big challenge for the Hawks, however, is in its pitching rotation which consists primarily of position players – especially from the middle of the field – who will have to be managed carefully to avoid wearing out their arms. “We haven’t had a year where we’ve had so many positional guys be our senior, No. 1, pitchers across the board,” Dragum said. “Three of them are infielders: Jack, Nick and Camden. That makes it much more difficult to monitor throws and not get guys sore.” Hanover has seen Liberty Christian twice in a state championship game: first in the 2016 Group 4A final, which the Hawks won 13-12; and again in 2017, which the Bulldogs won, 8-5. Dragum wouldn’t be surprised to see Liberty Christian again this year. “They’ve got a good chance of getting there. That would be kind of fun,” Dragum said. “But it’s going to be hard. This season, our schedule … is ridiculous, the most demanding schedule we’ve ever had. … It’s going to be a tough road, but everybody makes the [regional] tournament this year, so we figure we’ll be battle tested. We might be 10 and 10, but we’ll be battle tested.”
By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – A new baseball season begins this week, bringing with it the usual season-opening questions: Who’s up? Who’s down? Who has a chance of surprising fans and pundits alike? Much is different about the 2018 landscape – some of the changes are much more significant than the routine adjustments teams have to make after seniors graduate. One of the biggest changes affecting county baseball teams is another round of realignment. Patrick Henry has dropped down to Class 4, facing Hanover head on in Region 4B. There are no more conferences and conference tournaments. Some regions will take all teams in a postseason regional tournament, other regions will take only the top-ranked teams in their postseason tournaments. And some coaches begin the season not sure quite how the regional tournaments will be organized. The most important question for the coaches, however, is how their teams look at the start of the season. Hanover Arguably the biggest question among Hawk baseball fans is whether Hanover can continue its string of state tournament appearances. The Hawks lost some big guns last year to graduation – including three NCAA Division I athletes in Antonio Balducci (Richmond), Josh Plummer (Tennessee) and Brian Sisson (Virginia Tech) – but they return much of the lineup that took them to the Virginia High School League Class 4 championship game last year. “We’ve got a good nucle-

a different coach, [is great]. I think the willingness and the drive to be a sponge, to soak it all in – the growth mindset of ‘We can do this. We have a bunch of talent, let’s conquer this and have some fun,’ – I think they’re doing very well with all of that.”

our lineup,” she said. “We still have some holes to fill defensively … but I think we’ve got a good core coming back, with Lauren Taylor, Sydney Guess and Logan Hawker leading the way along with Jessie Gentry.” The Confederates will call upon Savanah Henley, a sophomore, to helm the pitching staff. Last year, Henley compiled a 5-0 record with a 1.087 ERA, 74 strikeouts and 19 walks. “We’re hoping that Savanah will be able to step in this year and have some of the success that Kayley [Scott] had last year,” Davis said. Davis is looking forward to not having to face St. George. “I think [Atlee] is going to be going through a little bit of rebuilding this year,” Atlee said. “They have two kids that I know of that will be pitching for them. They’re a great program. They’ve obviously had great success, so it’s still going to be a rivalry. It’s just that we won’t be facing Peyton St. George every time we go there.” Patrick Henry While the Patriots lost one of their highest-impact players, Grayson Radcliffe, to graduation last year, Radcliffe was the only starting senior they lost. This year’s Patrick Henry team is full of experienced players who have proven they can handle varsity pressure – even among teams from higher classifications than most of their Class 4 competitors. “We should be [loaded], yeah,” said first-year head coach Lance LeStourgeon, who is no stranger to the Patriots’ program, having served as assistant coach under his predecessor, Walter Pettus, and junior varsity coach under Pettus’ predecessor, Shelby Webb. LeStourgeon and his team have set a high standard for as we always do, for Patrick classmen this year, which is and six juniors on the team this themselves this season. Henry softball,” LeStourgeon kind of a first for us the last year, so the experience is there “We have high expectations, said “We have a lot of upper- few years. We’ve got six seniors for sure.”
Hanover The Hawks are in severe rebuilding mode: They have just three seniors – Lauren Hughes, Kayley Turner and Jenna Ways – on the roster. Instead, they have a bumper crop of freshmen and sophomores: seven of the former and five of the latter. Their main hope is that the less experienced players grow up quickly enough to make some kind of showing in the Region 4B tournament at the end of the season. Teams like Patrick Henry, also in Region 4B, will make it difficult for the Hawks to advance far into the postseason. Dave Lawrence/The Local

Left, Lee-Davis shortstop Lauren Taylor (6), shown here in the Conference 11 tournament against Deep Run last year, is one of a solid group of returning Confederates hoping for a return trip to the Class 5 state championship game.
Charlotte Mitchell, a junior, returns to anchor the Patriots’ pitching rotation with junior Olivia Swell and freshman Riley Dull helping out. What LeStourgeon likes best about his team is its attitude. “For the seniors, this is their third coach in four years,” he said “The openness and willingness to learn, to try different things that they haven’t done in the past, a different process with
King William The Cavaliers struggled with youth last year, but that should not be a problem this year, with only one senior lost to graduation. Even so, the experienced players coming back are still fairly young, with only a handful of seniors among the returning starting seven. “We’re upperclassmenheavy this year. Finally,” said King William head coach Elizabeth Welshonce. “Pretty much eight of our nine starters will be a junior or senior this year. It will be really nice, actually, to have some experience on the field.” The handful of seniors will carry a lot of the leadership weight for the team. Pitcher Jenna Evans, third baseman Hailey Baldwin and Allison McGehee are all committed to playing for Division III colleges next year, and are hoping to finish their high school careers on a successful note, as is senior center fielder Hailey Reed.

offense a chance. Lee-Davis lost two stalwarts on the mound to graduation – Matthew Holler and Bryan Diehr, two hurlers who could be counted on to give head coach Tyler Johnson plenty of innings once they stepped on the mound. This year the Confederates have players who can throw. The question is for how long. Johnson may have to solve his problem with pitching by committee. “[Holler and Diehr] are probably our biggest losses,” said Lee-Davis head coach Tyler Johnson. “I know last year in our biggest games we’d throw Holler out there or Diehr and kind of just tell them to go win us the game. I don’t think we can do that this year.” The only experienced pitcher returning to the lineup this year is Jake Stanley. “We have few freshmen who are going to pitch and get significant innings, Brett Allen and Jalen Strattman,” Johnson said. “But then we also have seniors like Kyle Hogan and Zach Cooper and Nick Evans. They’ll be called upon to fill that role as well.” “Most of our batting lineup is back from last year,” Johnson said. “We lost Dallas Jackson at the top. … He was our leadoff guy, center fielder. He’s going to be a big gap to fill. But we’ll do our best.” Jackson made first team AllState last year, so referring to his graduation as a “big gap to fill” is something of an understatement. Johnson is looking to a sophomore, Jack Rice, to take over the leadoff spot. “As a sophomore, he doesn’t have any varsity experience, but we have a lot of confidence in his ability to get on base and kind of do the same things that Dallas did,” Johnson said. “It might take a few games, but I would expect that he’ll start

hitting his stride about spring break. Once he gets used to the pitching and the speed of the game, he’ll be OK.” Atlee The Raiders lost a lot of its starting offense to graduation, but they still have plenty of senior leadership in the ranks to steady the ship as those just joining the starting ranks get their sea legs. “It will be a process, but hopefully by the mid-point of the year those [new] guys will have gotten their varsity legs under them and be able to play at a level that makes us successful,” said Atlee head coach John Corbin. “I only return four bats in the lineup, so I’ll have five new guys in the lineup. Now they’ll be upperclassmen, but they haven’t played a good amount of innings.” The offense will be cemented by its four returning starters: Zach Beach, Nick Carlo, J.T. Fitzpatrick and Adam Jewell. The Raider pitching rotation will have two solid starters coming back: John Kish and Jacob Dave Lawrence/The Local Freshman Brett Allen (17), who pitched in a scrimmage against visiting Maggie Walker Thursday, is part of a group of Smither. “John Kish kind of led us underclassmen who will waste no time stepping up to contribute to the Confederates’ success this year. last year and Jacob Smither was kind of our third starter and middle relief guy last year,’ Corbin said. “So they both have a lot of experience.
