RICHMOND – Bon Secours Health System, VCU Health and Virginia Premier announced on Monday, May 7, that they had formed a new partnership to bring more options in 2019 to patients insured on the Affordable Care Act health insurance exchange in Central Virginia. Pending approvals from the Virginia Bureau of Insurance and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, these plans will be offered in areas served by providers from Bon Secours Richmond Health System, as well as from VCU Health System.

Earley Jr. had been employed as a deputy by the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office and served with Hanover Fire-EMS. Earley, 71, died Wednesday, May 9. “I was deeply saddened to hear of Sonny Earley’s passing,�

in the Hanover Fire-EMS community and a great friend and partner to the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office for many years.

He honorably served the citizens of Hanover County and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sonny’s wife Betsy, their family and friends.�

He had been a deputy with the HCSO for several years. “Sonny Earley served the Commonwealth of Virginia for 55 years in law enforcement and the fire service. Sonny was the volunteer district chief for the Mechanicsville Volunteer

Fire Company for over 20 years and mentored close to 100 individuals that progressed in their careers to become leaders in the fire service. He was a good man, a great mentor and will be missed,� said Jethro H. Piland III, Hanover County Fire-EMS chief.

Sumner reported updated figures for the third quarter of the current fiscal year, a period that ended March 31 and included reports on the General Fund, Public Utilities and the School Operating Fund.

Revenues for the General Fund continue to show a positive trend with this year’s third quarter figures approximately $5 million ahead of last year’s figures for the same period.

“Based on the current revenues and future collection estimates, total year revenues are expected to be about $235.9 million or approxi-

our medical staff. The greatest achievement is that we are recognized for high quality outcomes.”

Memorial Regional has been named to Healthgrades’ America’s 50 Best Hospitals’ Award for five years (20142018) in a row.

The hospital has been the recipient of the Healthgrades’ America’s 50 Best Hospitals’ Award for seven years (20122018) in a row.

Additionally, MRMC received Healthgrades’ Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence for 12 years (2007-2018) in a row.

“The most important accomplishment of the team and myself is the continuation of high quality care,” Gordon added. “That is a role that we take with high regard and deep seriousness.”

He views MRMC as “a

referral center to the Northern Neck and all points east in particular. We honor our relationship with all the communities east to serve for primary and higher levels of care.” Rappahannock General Hospital in Kilmarnock is part of the Bon Secours Health System.

“We are a destination point,” Gordon continued,

Property tax revenues are expected to increase by $7 million for the year, still about $250,000 short of budget projections.

“Other local taxes are projected to exceed the budget by about 1.5 million,” Sumner said.

Expenditures for the year also are under budget. Final year projections indicate about $277 million for those budgeted items, about $6 million less than the appropriation.

The total projected General Fund operating balance is $7 million, monies that will be used for reinvestment in the FY2019 county and

school budgets.

The Public Utilities portion of the equation reflected lower revenues, including charges for services that amount to more than $1 million. That shortfall is largely due to the Bear Island closing and budget adjustments have been approved to address this issue in the FY2019 budget.

School expenditures also are projected to be below budget, and Sumner said the system is on track to return about $2.6 million to the county at the end of the fiscal year.

In other matters, Director of Public Works Mike Flagg provided an update on Atlee Station Road improvements.

“To date, we have worked on Atlee Station Road in incremental components, and that’s not unlike what we do on many of our roads,” Flagg

said.

Flagg said one of the drawbacks of that methodology is the difficulty in predicting per mile actual costs, and the constantly rising price of construction projects.

Shifting entrances along Atlee Station Road or widening current corridors are components of the project, according to Flagg.

Flagg also addressed other improvements associated with the project, including a signal at Honey Meadows and an access road from Chickahominy Middle School.

During a recent board meeting, a citizen expressed opposition to the use of proffer funds to construct the school access road.

Flagg said that access road project was the result of citizen and school involvement

and addresses safety concerns and the impact school traffic has on Atlee Station Road.

He added that the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) required that the access road be approved before they would approve the signal at Honey Meadows and Atlee Station Roads.

Since revenue sharing is no longer available to fund local road projects, the county turned to proffers from Honey Meadows to fund the access road.

“It’s our view that this particular access road is no different from us realigning the entrances or when a project is widened – it’s an appropriate nexus to Atlee Station Road widening,” Flagg said. “We feel like it was appropriate to use proffer funds for that portion of the road.”

Bids for that project are completed and a contract awarded with a completion date of late summer anticipated.

Completion of the signal is less clear. Flagg pointed to difficulties in obtaining signal poles as a delaying factor in the project.

“There’s as much as a sixmonth lead time in getting the poles from the manufacturer,” Flagg said, indicating that could delay the goal of having the light installed by the opening of school in the fall.

Honey Meadows resident Bob Nelson raised questions regarding the appropriateness of using proffer funds for these projects at last month’s board meeting.

Supervisors extended an invitation for Nelson to speak at its next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 23.

Did you thank your teacher last week?

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor PTA Teacher Appreciation Week was observed May 7-11, with an emphasis placed on acknowledging those dedicated individuals who go above and beyond for their students.

The national PTA website said, “Teachers change the lives of millions of children every day, and their work and impact extend far beyond the boundaries of the classroom.”

I’m amazed by the devotion and perseverance of those in the education field for their commitment to providing a strong base for the future.

Two teachers influenced me even though neither had any impact on my career. Their guidance and support made the difference. One was my fifth grade teacher, while the other taught Spanish.

Their compassion with their students was evident in how they approached the subjects they taught.

I had the good fortune in the late 1990s or early 2000s to encounter my Spanish teacher at the post office in my hometown. It was an unforgettable moment because I had the opportunity to tell her what her encouragement had done, and led to a path no one would have expected, especially me.

Three years in her Spanish class were enlightening in terms of how a room filled with young minds absorbed her methods. She was the epitome of a teacher.

A small woman, she was soft-spoken but held the attention of every student. She truly led by example. She kept up with my career and that moment at the post office sadly proved to be the last time I would see her. She was moving to

another state to be with family in her retirement.

She had urged me to study languages at Marshall University. I often wonder what my life would have been like if I had taken her advice.

That’s just the kind of teacher she was -- always thinking of what she thought would be best for the student in an adult world.

Hanover County Public Schools is blessed with many similar teachers and administrators. While last week was designated in appreciation of them, you should remember every day the sacrifices they make to ensure a better future for every child in our county.

We have an acclaimed school division for a reason -- and it does start in the classroom.

To all teachers -- public, private and home -- thank you!

Name change means scouting for the masses

After more than 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America is changing its name. The new version is Scouts BSA, a name that seems even more confusing or immediately obsolete than the well-worn and recognizable mantra.

It shouldn’t surprise any of us that the announcement was accompanied by a predictable dose of outrage with

one commentator exclaiming “it’s the end of another American institution.”

Honestly, they are not upset with the name change per se; it’s the organization’s decision to admit girls to its troops and a previous decision to allow gays into the ranks.

The name change was the final insult in a triad of unpopular decisions for many who support the organization’s original mission to pro-

But, I get the insistence that some things should be preserved, and old rules are not always obsolete.

I had no preconceived opinion on the name change, or the additions to

the ranks, so I thought back to my days as a scout.

As I recalled my days as a just barely First Class scout at Troop 744, a barrage of great memories spent on camping trips or jamborees swirled in my head.

Sanctuary City leaders violate federal law The Left is as strident as ever on Sanctuary Cities for illegal aliens. They gloss over the “supremacy clause,” which assigns certain functions of government only to Washington.

They fail to take into account the optics of such attempts at resistance in the past. Some on the Left point out that secession was illegal and all Confederates were traitors.

More recently, many communities in the South resisted integration orders by closing all public schools.

Whether the Left likes it or not, the leaders of those cities who affirmatively impede federal authorities from enforcing federal law are just as much in violation of federal statute as the Confederates of yore and the resistance to school integration.

If the courts rule against the Justice Department that localities can declare themselves sanctuaries from federal laws they don’t like, the Left will soon rue that day.

Let’s say, in the hopefully distant future, the Democrats take the presidency and both houses of Congress and they pass gun control and confiscation.

Hanover, or some similar pro Second Amendment county, could declare itself a sanctuary for gun owners with the sheriff and commonwealth’s attorney refusing to provide data to the federal authorities to do their job. Muleshoe, Texas could declare itself a sanctuary town from whatever remains of Obama Care.

Before the Left gets too carried away with resisting existing immigration law, they should mind what they wish for.

The shoe could be on the other foot and then what would they do?

My first hikes were enjoyed with my fellow scouts, as well as my first, and, hopefully, last fall off White Oak Falls near Big Meadows.

And, sure, there was plenty of foolishness along the way, but still lessons could be learned.

Trying to avoid older scouts cutting the lines on your tent instilled a lasting reminder of the value of unity as our group of younger scouts fought back by releasing their canoes into Buggs Island Lake.

The memories brought a

smile to my face as I remembered countless good times spent on Old Rag Mountain or Brady Saunders.

Upon completion, I couldn’t think of a single activity that wouldn’t, shouldn’t or couldn’t be enjoyed by young girls, or why those same lessons should be reserved for males only.

Now, scouting is not for everyone, and I can’t say I enjoyed all those merit badge challenges, but I do believe that the great experience of spending time in the great outdoors with responsible leadership is an opportunity that should be available to all.

I also came to the conclusion that the idea of young boys and girls spending time in team-building exercises that highlight self-reliance and independence is probably an idea that has come of age.

Besides, why should girls be denied the pleasure of a midnight snipe hunt?

Ellen Marie Morrison Birch, 60, of Ashland, slipped from the bonds of earth peacefully on May 4, 2018, four months following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

Ellen was BIRCH preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Dorothy Morrison, and loving grandparents. She is survived by her loving husband, Glenn; sisters, Karen Parrish (Wilton) of Elmont and Suzanne Dale (Sterling) of Midlothian; brother, Greg Morrison of Charlotte, North Carolina; parents-In-law, Ray and Dot Birch of Ashburn; and a large family of in-laws, nephews, nieces, and cousins that she dearly loved. Ellen was born in Charlottesville. Early years were spent in Lynchburg at her grandparents’ farm

near Chase City, and in the Richmond neighborhoods of Midlothian and Bon Air. Ellen graduated from Lynchburg College with a degree in music education and later received the school’s prestigious M. Carey Brewer Alumni Award.

From beginning to end, Ellen’s life was filled with music. She sang in church choirs from the age of 4, and for the last 12 years taught private piano lessons to dozens of bright and beloved students in her home.

For 30 years she served as a director of children, youth, adult and handbell choirs at Duncan Memorial United Methodist in Ashland, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Lynchburg and other congregations. She taught music in public schools in the City of Lynchburg and was named the system’s elementary teacher of the year in 1989.

Along with Glenn and other musical friends, she sang contemporary folk music and participated in community concerts and programs. Ellen wrote and staged many of her own original children’s musical productions at schools

and congregations including “Eugene the Evergreen,” “Too Fat for the Chimney” and “The Colors of Christmas.”

Ellen loved nature and was deeply moved when she experienced God’s presence in the beauty of creation. She devoted her free time in the last few years discovering Virginia’s Northern Neck region with Glenn, restoring a 1930s river cottage, learning new artistic crafts, taking long walks and bike rides, and inviting friends for weekends of casual birding, thrift store shopping, and watching the sun and moon light the water. Ellen will be deeply missed by many. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday May 19, 2018, at the Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church at 201 Henry Street in Ashland, with a reception for family and friends to follow. Sonny was a Virginia National Guard Veteran. He worked at the MCV Lab for 15 years before he moved to driving over the road, CHENAULT retiring with 25 years for Cox Transportation.

Sonny was a lifetime member and District EARLEY Chief for Hanover Fire-EMS with nearly 20 years at Mechanicsville Station 7. He retired from the Richmond Bureau of Police after 20 years and continued to serve his community in Mechanicsville until retiring in 2005. Sonny also was a former deputy with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office for several years. He was an instrumental leader

in the building of Hanover Fire-EMS’ strong foundation. Mrs. Earley would like to say a special thank you to James River Hospice for all their care and support.

One dies in fiery crash on I-295

By Sean Gorman Richmond Times-Dispatch One person died from a Hanover crash early Monday morning where a vehicle went off Interstate 295 and then traveled hundreds of feet before hitting a tree and catching on fire, according to the Virginia State Police.

Troopers responded around 12:40 a.m. to the single-vehicle crash at I-295 and exit 38 B. A preliminary investigation found the driver of a 2009 Audi A4 was traveling north on the interstate and ran off the road to the right, state police said. The vehicle traveled several hundred feet before strik-

ing the tree head-on, authorities said.

The front-seat passenger succumbed to injuries at the scene, authorities said.

The driver was transported for minor injuries while a back-seat passenger was transported for serious injuries.

Authorities said the investigation is in its early stages.

Parks & Rec tour focuses on Henry HANOVER – Hanover County Parks & Recreation will lead a tour of the Road to Revolution, which includes significant locations in the life of Patrick Henry.

The tour will get underway at the Court House and head south and east through the area of the county where Henry was born and raised.

Participants will travel by Slash Church, where Henry’s uncle was the minister and Pole Green Church site where the young Henry often attended church.

Firerfighter runs to support suicide prevention, mental health awareness HENRICO -- Henrico firefighter Alex Hall will begin a 1,000-mile run on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, to support suicide prevention and mental health awareness. The run is called the SOS 1,000 Mile Run and will raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Alex and his running partner, Thaddeus Meyer, will be running 1,000 miles together in 25 days, for an average of 40 miles per day.

Susan Clark named Communications Officer of the Year

HANOVER -- Hanover County honored its Emergency Communications Officers in a recognition ceremony recently held at the County Administration Building.

The Honorable Sean Davis, chairman of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, read and presented Curt Shaffer, director of the Public Safety Emergency Communications Department, with a Proclamation honoring the Hanover Public Safety Communications Officers for their dedication, service and sacrifice during National Telecommunicators Week.

Clark previously worked as a dispatcher with the Orange County Sheriff ’s Office and the Virginia State Police. She was

nominated by her supervisors because of her outstanding dedication, professionalism and leadership ability.

“Susan, from the start, has contributed to the continued success of our agency by adding her skills and experience to our overall operation. She has brought a great deal of knowledge with the use of the VCIN System (Virginia Criminal Information Network), providing short cuts and tips on use of the system. She makes herself available for extra shifts and will always volunteer to assist when we need additional staffing. Dominion volunteers provide helping hand at Ashland ‘Y’

ASHLAND -- Employees of Dominion Energy are no strangers when it comes to community service, and each year volunteers donate thousands of hours by participating in the company’s Energizing Communities program.

Last week, a group of Dominion workers took time to construct a low ropes course at the Patrick Henry YMCA in

Ashland.

The course is a new addition to the Y’s summer camp program and will be ready for this season’s campers.

According to one Dominion employee, last week’s project was a group effort, a recurring theme in the company’s community involvement.

board of the Ashland YMCA. “All employees are encouraged to go out and get involved in projects like this in our local community,” Chaffin added.

“We thought it would be a great idea for us to come out and get involved in this project today.”

Dominion donated $2,500 to cover the costs of the materials needed for the ropes course, and the volunteers provided the sweat equity.

“We’ve never had a low ropes course at Patrick Henry so it’s amazing what happens when a community comes together like today,” she said.

“We are very excited for our kids who will experience the team-building and build confidence as they participate on this course,” she added.

The summer program serves children from all districts in Hanover County, and McClure said it’s a unique and exciting experience for many of the kids.

“We serve some kids who have never seen a swimming pool, let alone being able to participate in a low ropes obstacle course,” she said.

Holly Austin of the Atlee Station Y said the program identifies kids from Hanover in an effort to offer the program to children who might not have access to summer programs.

“We work together to serve kids who wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to get the camp experience,” she said. “We work with our local guidance counselors to help us locate the families in our community who need these services.”

These facilities were among only 30 percent of hospitals nationwide to receive the “A” grade.

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit organization com-

mitted to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health care system.

Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades of A, B, C, D and F are assigned to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals across the nation twice annually, once in the fall and once in the spring.

Each of these facilities received an “A” grade in the fall of 2017 as well, sustaining top-

notch performance over time.

The grade represents a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.

Master Gardener Training open house to be held Monday

MECHANICSVILLE -- Do you love gardening? Do you enjoy helping others learn? Do you feel a commitment to community service in Hanover? If so, take part in the Master Gardener Course.

Master Gardeners are trained community leaders working with individuals to increase knowledge and understanding of environmentally sound horticulture. They seek to improve the quality of life in their communities through education.

Master Gardeners are specially trained by Virginia Cooperative Extension which is a group of Specialist and Extension Agents who extend knowledge of Virginia’s Land Grant Universities: Virginia Tech and Virginia State.

The 2018 course offers two separate fee categories: (1) Traditional Master Gardener includes 50 hours of volunteer service before MG status is achieved and volunteer service thereafter.

The fee is $125, payable after acceptance into the program. (2) For individuals interested in increasing their horticulture skills and knowledge but who do not intend to volunteer, the fee is $225, payable after acceptance into the program.

The Hanover Master Gardener Training Course will be offered from 9:390 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday and Thursday mornings between Sept. 6 and Nov. 15 at Covenant Woods at the Lodge at 7090 Covenant Woods Drive in Mechanicsville. Hanover takes advantage of C-fed miscues

By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Despite their slow start this season, Hanover’s baseball team is getting into position to make yet another deep postseason run.

Showing an important sign of a team experienced with success, Hanover took advantage of a shaky start by the Lee-Davis defense, eventually turning a 2-0 first inning lead into a 7-2 victory Friday to improve to 9-5 on the season.

“That was a big relief, because we didn’t swing the bats too well. To get two runs was a blessing,” said Hanover head baseball coach Charlie Dragum.

“We’re, I think, far from a finished product. We make too many mistakes still.”

Hanover mistakes Friday paled in comparison to the Confederate miscues. In the opening frame, a throw to first base on a simple grounder to pitcher Jake Stanley went awry, allowing Hawk starting pitcher Jack Dragum to reach base and move to second.

Nick Zona then singled to score Dragum, stole second, then scored when Michael Warley’s grounder to third was missed by Braden Lambert.

Two Lee-Davis errors, two Hanover runs – a young team at home can’t afford such gifts to an experienced foe.

“You want to come out, throw a zero on the board and have some momentum, and we were well on our way to doing that, then we gave them runs”, said Lee-Davis head coach Tyler Johnson. “A good team like that, you can’t hand them runs. We did, and then Jack’s

tough on the mound.”

Dragum went six innings, shutting out Lee-Davis until the sixth when the Confederates (10-8) scored their two runs thanks to a double from Carter Trice to drive home Nick Evans and an error by Camden Grimes on a ground ball to

third that allowed Jack Rice to come home. Dragum ended the rally with a pair of strikeouts to strand two Lee-Davis runners, finishing the night with five strikeouts, four walks, and just two hits allowed.

Part of the reason for Hanover’s success was the ability to overcome some mistakes of its own. A first-inning error allowed Rice to reach base for Lee-Davis, but, two outs later, he was caught trying to steal

second by Warley to end the inning.

The Confederates got two runners on base in the third when the score remained 2-0, but a strikeout and fielder’s choice again quelled their threat.

When Hanover responded with three fourth-inning runs thanks to four singles, two stolen bases and another Confederate error, the mountain became too tall to climb.

Both coaches see opportunity, as well as concern, for their teams in this the final week of the regular season. Lee-Davis is all but assured a berth in the Region 5B tournament which begins May 25, but it will be on the road in the quarterfinal round. Hanover, in the new Region 4B, has no idea what seed, and how many games, await them in their quest to again clinch a return to the Group 4 state tournament.

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor Randolph-Macon stumbled to take an early out from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball tournament, but the Yellow Jackets â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who went into the tournament ranked No. 1 in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Collegiate Baseball Poll and the Massey Ratings â&#x20AC;&#x201C; still have some baseball to play.

The Yellow Jackets dropped a 9-7 decision to Shenandoah in the first round of the ODAC tournament â&#x20AC;&#x201C; held at City Stadium in Lynchburg â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Friday and were eliminated by Roanoke 6-5 Saturday.

But they still earned an atlarge bid to the NCAA Division III baseball tournament and will be the top seed in the South Regional in Holly Springs, North Carolina. They will open against LaGrange Thursday at 11 a.m. at Ting Park, home of the Coastal Plain Leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Holly Springs Salamanders. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We knew going into the [ODAC] tournament â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if that was the reason why we played the way we did or if we just got beat by better teams â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that our body of work throughout the course of the year had put us in a strong position at the regional level,â&#x20AC;? said Randolph-Macon head coach Ray Hedrick. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been common for us to be in that position. The Confederates took an early lead thanks to a threerun first inning, but Hanover responded with two runs in the second inning to close the gap to 3-2.

Broadened access helps pole vaulters ‘Aim High’

By Monica Hunsaker For The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – The pole vault is becoming more inclusive as it rises from a oncedying high school sport to one to watch in Virginia.

Kyle Bishop knows accessibility is the key to the pole vault progressing to mainstay status in Virginia athletics and the VCU graduate remains at the forefront of making it happen.

Bishop started what is now Aim High Pole Vault Club in 2011 after years of coaching at Lee-Davis. He felt strongly pulled to bring his beloved event to potential athletes kept out of the sport due to its hefty equipment price tag.

“I wanted to give back where kids weren’t given the opportunity to try pole vault.

It’s extremely special to take a kid who wouldn’t normally be

able to afford to vault, or who has never even seen the sport, and say, ‘Okay, let’s see if we can take this kid from ground-zero,” Bishop said.

The Mechanicsville club has been a powerful force for preparing athletes for collegiate competition. Bishop joined forces with coach Eric Sandridge, which has proven a potent recipe for the club’s athletes.

“It’s amazing what can happen when like-minded people get together,” Sandridge said.

“We want to provide the place where these kids can thrive.”

It was under Bishop’s coaching that Sandridge, then an Atlee student, earned numerous district championships and all-region awards before going on to compete at William & Mary. Sandridge has now himself coached a myriad of state champions.

contingent of pole vaulters quickly grow from just five to a healthy 15 members when the VHSL added the girls pole vault to its slate of track and field events in 1999. This was a major shift from what pole vaulters and their coaches had

become accustomed to: living with the constant fear of being shut down altogether because of high equipment and insurance costs and too few participants.

“Females really saved the sport,” said Sandridge, who has helped female pole vaulters – such as Lee-Davis’ Jordan Lipinski – win state championships and achieve personal bests over 12 feet. “I’ve seen [the pole vault] die four times in Virginia, just since I’ve been around.”

The coach remembers his early days, which involved a lot of teaching himself the ins and outs of the pole vault.

Still, he finished high school holding the school record and All-Region honors. Today he believes the sport and its athletes are on the rise and at their best yet.

Though not one for the spotlight, Bishop admits he’s incredibly honored to be recognized for his role in the developing the sport, such as being named National Pole Vault High School Coach of the Year.

To be recognized for the club’s extraordinary dedication to the pole vault and its young athletes is, as the coach put it, “the best testament to what we’ve done and are still striving to do.”

Working with Lee-Davis senior Alex Slinkman at Aim High during the 2016-17 season helped the young athlete to secure a school record at 16 feet 0 inches, as well as sweep the Virginia High School League’s Class 5A indoor and outdoor state championships.

Atlee senior Will Chapman has seen his work with Aim High pay off this year. He simultaneously broke his school record, the VHSL Class 5 indoor state meet record, and the Boo Williams Sportsplex facility record when he cleared 16 feet 5 inches Class 5 indoor championships in February.

It was also the second-best vault ever in Virginia and won Chapman his first state title.

Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream.

On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group.

Family and friends of Salem Presbyterian Church recently took a copy of The Mechanicsville Local to Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The group saw how the Old Order Amish live and work in today’s world -- and without electricity. Their large families work together to raise crops and livestock and keep up with household chores. The Salem tourists visited Gettysburg National Park, where they saw the Cyclorama Painting of Pickett’s Charge. They enjoyed the Sight & Sound Theatre’s musical stage adventure of “Jesus.” They also took advantage of the many opportunities to shop. Judy Bowles arranged the trip.

MECHANICSVILLE -Jean Fender of Mechanicsville was presented the 2017 Member Award of Honor by the President of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs Convention on April 10 “In recognition of, and appreciation for, her constant dedication to the growth and spirit of her club, district and state garden club, and for the diligent example that she has set for all of us to follow.”

She also received the South Atlantic Region Member Award of Honor “For performing outstanding service in promoting the aims and objectives of gardening in the Region.”

In May, Fender will attend the National Garden Clubs Inc.

JEAN FENDER Convention in Philadelphia for National recognition.

She is a member of Hilliard Park Garden Club and was nominated by her club for the award.
