ICHMOND -- Every week, another child is diagnosed with cancer in Central Virginia. Last year, Maya Smith was one of them. Since May 2017, this vibrant 12-year-old has been undergoing treatment for medulloblastoma, the most common type of pediatric malignant brain tumor, at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR). This inspirational pre-teen has maintained a positive outlook since being diagnosed and is looking forward to completing her active chemotherapy treatment this August. For now, she focuses on the positive aspects

of coming to CHoR, like seeing her favorite nurses and spending time with the Child Life Specialist. She is incredibly grateful for the support of the community around her and is hoping to see it continue this summer through the area’s participation in Anthem LemonAid. Sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Anthem LemonAid is Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ signature summer event and has been helping kids with cancer since 2001. Participants will distribute cups of lemonade in exchange for donations and 100% of all funds raised will benefit the Hematology and see LEMONAID, pg. 5

Renovation vs. replacement considered for aging schools ASHLAND -- Hanover County school officials are keeping a forward-looking eye on their collection of aging schools and devising a plan to meet those future brick and mortar needs. On Thursday, Hanover County Public Schools administration and Hanover County School Board members held a workshop session to gather a broad view of the condition of 10 of its most challenged campuses. “Our facilities department does an outstanding job of making sure our facilities are in excellent shape, Michael Gill, superintendent, said. “That being said, there is no building built that lasts forever, so we want to make sure that we are doing our due diligence in looking at several facilities that may need possible renovation and/or replacement. The system’s five-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) budgets for one additional school with construction in the fifth year of that plan. The school district enlisted the assistance of RRMM

Jack Clark of RRMM Architects addressed the Hanover County School Board on May 24 during a workshop about the condition of 10 campuses.

Jack Clark of RRMM said some of the county’s oldest schools are wood-framed, and, as years progress, the condition of the foundation deteriorates. The report features detailed

analysis of the 10 sites -- eight elementary and two high schools -- with cost and scope of renovation versus replacement for each. Clark recommended that Battlefield Park, Henry Clay, Washington Henry and Gandy warrant replacement, while renovations would suffice at Beaverdam, Elmont, Mechanicsville and Person’s Corner elementary schools. Replacement also was recommended for both high schools in the study, Lee-Davis and Patrick Henry. While there is room at the Patrick Henry site for new construction, LeeDavis would require a move to more acreage to accommodate its students. Preliminary cost for those high school projects range between $85 and $90 million in today’s dollars, but could cost even more at the time of construction. Gill indicated that the discussion is preliminary, designed to gauge priorities so officials can plan for future needs. “This is an introduction to

MRMC: 20 years of serving area’s needs By Melody Kinser Managing Editor One of the first conversations RSN Publisher Joy Monopoli and I had by phone included her mentioning the state-of-the-art medical center in Mechanicsville. Regardless of age, that’s a significant factor in relocating. I had applied for the editor’s position at The Mechanicsville Local and was excited to learn about the community and Hanover County. That was 10 years ago. Soon after arriving here, I had the pleasure to meet then-Memorial Regional Medical Center CEO Michael Robinson. The hospital was celebrating its 10th anniversary. Now, 10 years later, and CEO Mark Gordon is excited about MRMC’s growing role in the region.

In an interview on Friday, May 11, he used the word community many times as he talked about the partnerships they enjoy as part of this county. As large as the campus is and the many specialty services provided, one would think the medical center had been there much longer. It’s easy to say that it has come a long way in a short time. Any visit -- whether personal or professional -- offers a glimpse of the huge benefit MRMC is to Hanover County. We are blessed to have this facility here in Mechanicsville. Gordon is humble in talking about his role, but we all know that, while it takes a team to be a success, the leader carries a great weight. He continued the tradition Robinson had in serving the people of the community. As CEO, Gordon also is quick to praise all of

those involved on every level of care throughout the hospital. MRMC truly is a team effort. Gordon acknowledges the contributions of all. The morning of our interview I witnessed his interaction with everyone he encountered. He didn’t know I was watching. He spoke to everybody he saw. When you have a talent of making every staff member, volunteer or visitor feel welcome, that’s a true leader. Memorial Regional will be kicking its party mode into full gear today. Expect various celebrations as No. 20 continues this year. We join the community in saying “Happy Anniversary!” to Memorial Regional Medical Center. To all those involved in its creation, thank you. We look forward to many more anniversaries.

‘Snakes on a Plane’ has become a thing of the past By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist I’m never sure about the news anymore. I think it’s the fear of the dreaded fake news that forces me to approach each story I read with a certain sense of skepticism. Don’t get me wrong. An ample amount of cynicism is almost a necessary weapon in today’s world of made up foolishness that often passes for

gospel, and it’s a good idea to question and verify. So, when I read that a major airline was joining many other national air carriers in banning ferrets, reptiles and other exotic animals from riding with passengers on their domestic and international flights, I would have bet that, somehow, I was being duped. Cue the Debbie Downer music. The story was accurate, a bit of straight news with no commentary

from officials or politicians arguing the validity of the new regulation. In recent years, the amount of Americans traveling with emotional support animals on airlines has more than doubled, and incidents involving this variety of God’s creatures and other passengers are up 40 percent. Reading the story prompted me to question what the previous policy involved, and why were ferrets, goats and hedgehogs ever allowed in the

passenger cabin of an airplane. First, let me clarify. Airlines continue to accommodate customers who prefer to take their pets with them on vacation. They are caged and stowed in the baggage compartment and, more times than not, arrive with their owners without incident. The problems have arisen with the bloated number of Americans who require an animal to accompany see PLANE, pg. 7

AL Ladies Auxiliary: thanks for poppy support I want to thank The Mechanicsville Local for twice publishing notice of our poppy drive on behalf of our military veterans at the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant on May 19, 2018. A special thank you, too, for the added embellishment of a colored poppy and military ID tags to the second notice -- that really made our small article stand out, resulting in a successful day of poppy distribution and received donations. We look forward to repeating this positive experience in November for Veteran’s Day. Our thanks also go to the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant at 10075 Jeb Stuart Pkwy. in Glen Allen for its supportive attitude toward and appreciation of all military veterans and their families. Our continuing partnership with them helps keep our poppy program alive and well, resulting in additional funds for military veteran support. them in the passenger cabin for emotional support. These service animals have been allowed in the cabin and that policy will continue with some guidelines. One airline official said the problem is in the fact that one man’s support animal is sometimes another passenger’s worst nightmare -- say, in the

And some industry specialists have a sneaky suspicion that some of the animals being claimed as emotional support pets are actually backyard variety companions like the one on your sofa. I suppose the issue of what animals can qualify as a support pet is more of a symptom of a recurring problem: the need of a few to mess up a good thing for everyone. I’m quite sure this issue didn’t suddenly appear but was the product of a growing number of people who think they

In other words, a few people chose to game the system and take advantage of a program that sought to offer comfort to travelers who need support animals. I also used to get my information from watching or listening to talk shows and motivational speakers but soon noticed they all had the same motive: money for the host for giving BS to the listener. “He possesses the qualities needed to serve the citizens of the Mechanicsville District. His patience, his encouragement, his ability to listen and hear the person standing in front of him are assets we want and demand from our leaders, Murray said. Bourassa said programs like the Advanced College Academy, the Specialty Center

at Hanover High School and the Hanover Center for Trades and Technology are examples that demonstrate the success of the past four years. “I believe one of the best things we can do for our students is to provide them with as many opportunities and pathways to success as possible, Bourassa said. “I have worked alongside my fellow board members in the last four years to accomplish this.

Bourassa also serves on the Hanover board representative at CodeRVA, a transformational multi-district regional high school with intense focus on computer science and IT. Bourassa also pointed to the board’s continued efforts to upgrade technology in Hanover schools. Bourassa is a network support analyst who lives with his wife of 31 years, Marjorie, and their son in Mechanicsville.

“It’s been my honor to represent the Mechanicsville District for the past four years and I humbly ask your acceptance of my nomination, Bourassa concluded. Hanover County Electoral Board member Roger Barnette also was nominated for the upcoming vacancy. Local NAACP president Eddie Nelson placed Barnette’s name in nomination. “Mr. Barnette’s goals and

objectives include sponsoring and supporting ongoing programs to promote student achievement in a positive environment, Nelson said. “He will employ a variety of communication strategies and dissemination of information that will support a positive school climate and culture. Barnette is a retired safety engineer, a staff sergeant in the Virginia Air National Guard and is currently the chairman

for the Employer Support of Guard and Reserve, a program that promotes relationships for Vets and potential employers. Barnette also has served as president of the county’s Community Services Board and is currently the vice chair of the county’s NAACP chapter. Barnette said he hopes to improve the lines of communication both in the community

the discussion, Gill said. “The idea here is to put all our needs

out on the table not to say we are going to do all 10 of these

in a set time frame and will continue to have discussions with the county administrator and the board of supervisors to see what is realistic beyond year five. While the board came to no conclusion regarding which project should be addressed first, members did reach consensus on a number of options. That included a plan to build a new campus that would combine Gandy and Clay elementary schools, a coupling that could save the county as much as $400,000 in administrative costs. But board member John Axselle, Beaverdam District, warned that proposal could be met with considerable controversy. “There’s going to be some community sensitivity regarding that, he said. Facilities director Ed Buzzelli said his first choice would be Battlefield. “There are three schools up there (on the list) -- Henry Clay, Washington Henry and Battlefield Park -- that are not going to last a whole lot longer, Buzzelli said. “I think there has to be a plan to do those before you renovate anything else. Some of those campuses were constructed in the 1930s. “Washington Henry has rotting wood, Buzzelli said. Board members also set a priority to alert county officials that 80 to 90 acres of land will be required for a new high school to replace Lee-Davis.

Some of those costs could be offset with the sale of the current site of the school, a valuable commercial intersection on Mechanicsville Turnpike. “There aren’t a lot of 80 10 100-acre parcels out there, Gill said. Chair Sue Dibble, South Anna District, emphasized the importance of addressing concerns at the county’s numerous campus-style schools, where open corridors pose safety issues. Gill will present the study at the next Joint Education Committee Clark’s study included options to enclose those corridors or border them with fencing to increase security. Vice chair Roger Bourassa, Mechanicsville District, thought aloud regarding the path forward. “I’m wondering if we want to go toward renovating multiple schools, which is the best bang for the buck, or are we going to focus on replacing our most needed elementary school? Gill will present the study at the next Joint Education Committee meeting on June 14, and Robert Hundley, Chickahominy District, said it’s important the board sets priorities to accompany that presentation. “As far as your ability to communicate our desires at that JEC meeting, I think we should definitely provide an amount of feedback from the board as far as what we think

those priorities ought to be, Hundley said. “It sounds like Battlefield and Washington Henry and Henry Clay are right at the top of the list, he added. Board members asked staff to provide their recommendations regarding how to stage the massive amount of projects. In addition to prioritizing the three replacement schools, Gill said the board might want to begin the process of looking for parcels. “It would be wise to begin looking at what parcels might be available for a replacement at some point and time for Lee-Davis High School, the superintendent said. In summary, Gill said, “What I’m hearing from the discussion is that we have the top two (priorities) or maybe a top three in hunting for a site. The order of 1-2 does not need to be decided. We need community input, Gill said. Those top two priorities appear to be the replacement of Battlefield Park and the consolidation of John Gandy and Henry Clay as a new elementary school, in addition to the land acquisition. “We would like to encourage our supervisors to begin looking because we are beginning to move forward with a plan, Dibble said. The chair also included safety and security on the list of priorities for upcoming discussions.

Robotics team shows what it takes in world competition Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE – CircuiTree, the robotics team from Atlee High School, placed 39th out of 67 teams from all over the world in the recent competition that included China, Japan and Germany. The local students interacted with a team from France. They went into the

ing team and we look forward to competing and teaming with Sparky for years to come, said Lucky Hoppe, Robotics Booster Club member. Hoppe clarified the rankings system from a previous article, saying they are done by points, spotlighting winning, safety, engineering, creativity, etc., over the course of the season. and professionalism. Head coach Thomas Larson said, “I learned so much about how to help our students become a world-class team. year. This has been a banner year; with Mr. Larson as head coach, the team has gone further than they ever have. It’s been an absolute blast seeing the team make it all the way to Detroit. CircuiTree has done an outstanding job this year and the whole team should be extremely proud of all their accomplishments!” Student Jake Hoppe said, “I had an amazing experience at the Detroit World Championship. I met teams from other countries, such as Israel and France. I learned so much and returned with ideas of how to improve our robotics program at Atlee. I learned about different technologies that big industrial companies use. I’m so proud of our team. We competed, explored, learned, and inspired. Now we want to continue to inspire in Hanover County.” Lucky Hoppe said, “We are so thankful for the support of the Hanover Education Foundation. Their generous gifts enabled us to compete in the first place, and then they supported us again so that we could afford to continue to compete at Worlds. We also would like to thank DoD Stem, DuPont, Hanover Ruritan, Verus Finacial Partners, Qubica/AMF, the Hanover County School Board, Atlee High School, Dr. John Wheeler, and many other supporters who have helped us along the

way. Their support has made it possible for Hanover students to compete in FIRST STEM programs on level with the most competitive schools in Virginia, Maryland, and now the World!” Hoppe noted that that support enabled so many students to learn not only robotics, electronics, and building, but also business, marketing, leadership, teamwork, and gracious professionalism. “This is exactly why we love Hanover County -- the community has rallied around the Atlee team.” Student Joe Murray, of the Drive Team and Build Team, said, “I learned that teamwork and communication is key for a successful match, and I learned to have fun while working hard.” Student and vice president Maria Kim said, ““There was a team next to us from Lyon, France, and I was seeing how much of their conversation I could understand after learning French in the classroom for so many years. I really enjoyed watching and talking with the other teams, seeing what world-level robotics competition looks like.” Student Rachel Owen said, “Even though we didn’t make it to playoffs, we still accomplished so much, and an important thing to learn is that you need to appreciate the gains you make instead of focusing on the losses.”

SHLAND -- Jessica Robertson, owner of Jessica Robertson Photographic Artistry, recently earned her Photographic Craftsman degree. Rob Behm, the president of Professional Photographers of America (PPA), recently presented the degree to Robertson in Nashville, Tennessee, at Imaging USA, the nation’s largest photography convention where 10,000 photographers were in attendance. This degree means that Robertson meets the standards of excellence set by PPA, which is the largest international nonprofit association for professional photographers. The photographic craftsman degree is awarded in recognition of service to the photographic profession as an orator, author and mentor. Jessica’s degree — and all the expertise it requires —illustrates her accomplishments and talent as one of only five photographers in the state and 67 nationwide to receive

this recognition this year. A PPA degree is not the completion of a university curriculum; it is a representation of the oldest and largest professional photography organization’s standards of excellence. “I love teaching and work-

If you succeed, we all succeed.” Barnette and his wife Janet have two daughters, both graduates of Hanover County Public Schools. Mechanicsville supervi-

be on-hand to assist all young pirates in their fishing adventures. No fishing license or regis-

sor and vice chair Canova Peterson is tasked with making the selection, a decision he knows will not be easy. “The bad news is I have to make the decision between these two gentlemen,” Peterson said. “I know both of these gentlemen well and the good news I can’t make a bad decision.” In other matters, Chickahominy resident Bob Nelson responded to a presentation by Public Works director Mike Flagg earlier this month regarding the Atlee Station Road widening project and the use of cash proffers to fund portions of the project. The presentation did not alter Nelson’s opinion that proffered funds should not be used to construct an access road at Liberty Middle School. “Cash proffers may only be used for approved and candidate road projects included in the board’s March 2013 Transportation policies,”

Nelson said. “This bars the county from using cash proffers for projects not on the list and it assures homeowners and developers that cash proffers will be used for priority road projects.” Nelson contends the access road project does not meet criteria for cash proffer use. “The middle school parking lot is ancillary to proffered road improvements offered by the developers of Honey Meadows and Taylor Farms. It is not a widening of Atlee Station Road,” Nelson said. He did not dispute the county’s right to segment road widening, but objected to projects along the route that, in his opinion, do not involve widening a road from two to four lanes. He referred to the access road as a “separate project” and added “it is not a widening of Atlee Road.” Nelson said the access project should be funded from the General Fund.

Taking a look at the Universe from the Center By Dr. George Spagna for The Mechanicsville Local Hello! If you were a regular reader of this monthly column in The Herald Progress, welcome back! If you are seeing this for the first time and wondering what it is, let me extend a welcome and a little history. The “Universe from the Center” (obviously Ashland!) is my attempt to share news and excitement about science in general and astronomy and space exploration in particular. Hopefully you’ll find as much interest in reading as I have found in writing it. I especially want to thank Melody Kinser and her upline editors for letting me use the pages of The Mechanicsville Local to continue a decades-long project that originated in Northside Magazine as “Night Lights.” Jay Pace graciously took me under the HP banner, and we changed the name of the column to reflect its Ashland pedigree. I’ll say a bit more about who I am in future columns, but the real focus is the wonderful Universe out there that we can explore from here in the Center. You may recall in March hearing of the first launch of the Falcon Heavy rocket, with its whimsical payload – Elon Musk’s Tesla roadster. The next launch will carry a real payload – a number of small “cube sats” and a solar sail test project from the Planetary

Society, known as Light Sail 2. But Mr. Musk isn’t stopping with Falcon Heavy. In fact, he already has in development a replacement for both Falcon 9 and Heavy. It’s called the BFR, which stands for Big ___ Rocket – you can fill in the blank. It’s proposed as a fully reusable 2 stage rocket capable of sending 150,000 kg to Mars. At 348 feet tall, it rivals the Saturn V that sent Apollo astronauts to the Moon, but with greater thrust. Saturn launched with 7.5 million pounds of thrust – BFR will have 11.8. The second stage will have 2.9 million pounds thrust. The second stage will have three different versions. The crew vehicle will have 40 passenger compartments, and may be able to carry 100 people into space and all the way to Mars. The “tanker” will carry cargo – satellites, fuel, space station modules, equipment for a Moon or Mars colony, etc. The satellite delivery version will do just that – think Space Shuttle cargo bay on steroids. Each will potentially land and take off from Moon or Mars,

and return to its launch site to be reused. The first stage would return to the launch site and land (just as the Falcon first stage does – when it works). After a lunar landing, the BFR would be able to lift off and return directly, assuming the vehicle refuels in Earth orbit (using a tanker) before heading to the Moon. For a Mars return, it would require making fuel on Mars to refuel the space ship. The first launch to Mars would deliver the fuel processing plant, possibly as soon as 2022. A flight with humans could follow two years later. Those dates are incredibly optimistic! But assembly of the first BFR could begin this year. Sub-orbital tests would follow in 2019. Elon Musk likes to dream big! Lunar phases for June: Last Quarter on the 6th, at 2:32 p.m.; New Moon on the 13th, at 3:43 p.m.; First Quarter on the 20th, at 6:51 a.m.; Full Moon on the 28th, at 12:53 a.m. Planet watchers won’t have to get up early in June. The first bright “star” to emerge from evening twilight will be Venus. Look for it to the northwest and follow it until it sets around 11 p.m. Saturn rises a bit before sunset, to the southeast, but it won’t be as bright as Venus. It will traverse the southern horizon and fade into predawn twilight. Mars rises as Venus sets. It will be due south around 4 a.m. Jupiter is due

south at 10 p.m. Mercury is at “superior conjunction” (on the far side of the Sun) on the 5th, and will be appearing in evening twilight by month’s end. Looking straight overhead at midmonth, about two hours after sunset, you will find the constellation Bootes (the Herdsman). Its brightest star is Arcturus, about 20 degrees southwest of zenith. To the northwest, handle high and almost vertical, you’ll see the familiar shape of the “Big Dipper” in Ursa Major. To the west, look for the familiar “sickle” of Leo. Its brightest star, the heart of the Lion, is Regulus, about 20 degrees above the horizon. Virgo lies to the southwest. Spica is its brightest star, about 20 degrees left of Saturn. Low to the south you will see Scorpio, with the bright red Antares about 20 degrees off the horizon. East and northeast, look for the Summer Triangle of three bright and widely spaced stars – Deneb, Vega, and Altair. Cygnus, the Swan is to the northeast, with Deneb at about 30 degrees altitude. To the east, bright Vega marks Lyra, about 50 degrees from the horizon, and Altair in Aquila is below at about 20 degrees. The Summer Triangle will climb higher as we move through the long, hot summer. If readers have questions about astronomy or science in general that you would like to see covered in one of these columns, please feel free to contact me at gspagna@rmc.edu.

Law Enforcement Recognition Night hosted by local Masons Photo submitted by T. Wade King

Mechanicsville’s Washington-Henry Masonic Lodge #344 honored the 2017 Hanover Sheriff’s Officer of the Year on May 14 in its Law Enforcement Recognition Night. Deputy Ryan Payne joined the department in 2015. In 2017, he was nominated Officer of the Month six times, won the award three times and had eight commendations. With an extensive knowledge of case law, he identified other criminal threats beyond issuing traffic tickets. In a safe officer manner, he made a many criminal/traffic arrests, some involving drugs and weapons. His professional demeanor in dealing with suspects, testifying in court and making citizen contacts gets positive outcomes. Shown are, from left, Col. David R. Hines, sheriff; Payne, his wife Ashley and their daughter; Lodge Worshipful Master Cliff Parker; and Junior Deacon Mike Trice.

Farmers may enroll in safety net period for 2018 crop year By Ken Upshaw Executive Director Farmers and ranchers with base acres in the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) or Price Loss Coverage (PLC) safety net program may enroll for the 2018 crop year. The enrollment period will end on Wednesday, Aug. 1. Since shares and ownership of a farm can change year-toyear, producers must enroll by signing a contract each pro-

20

gram year. The producers on a farm that are not enrolled for the 2018 enrollment period will not be eligible for financial assistance from the ARC or PLC programs for the 2018 crop should crop prices or farm revenues fall below the historical price or revenue benchmarks established by the program. Producers who made their elections in previous years must still enroll during the

2018 enrollment period. The ARC and PLC programs were authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill and offer a safety net to agricultural producers when there is a substantial drop in prices or revenues for covered commodities. Covered commodities include barley, canola, large and small chickpeas, corn, crambe, flaxseed, grain sorghum, lentils, mustard seed, oats, peanuts, dry peas, rape-

seed, long grain rice, medium grain rice (which includes short grain and sweet rice), safflower seed, sesame, soybeans, sunflower seed and wheat. Upland cotton is no longer a covered commodity. For more details regarding these programs, go to www.fsa. usda.gov/arc-plc. For more information, producers are encouraged to visit their local FSA office. To find a local FSA office, visit http://offices.usda.gov.

Atlee upsets Jaguars to advance to semis By Joe Nelson Richmond Times-Dispatch GLEN ALLEN – There were two outs and two runners on base when J.T. Fitzpatrick stepped up to the plate and sent a home run to center field. Fitzpatrick’s homer run would cap off a seven-run rally in the fifth and sixth innings for Atlee, as it dominated Glen Allen 8-2 in Region 5B quarterfinal play Friday night. “I figured a fastball was coming, he left it up in the zone and when I swung, it found the barrel,” said Fitzpatrick. Eric Haynes sprung the scoring frenzy with two RBIs on a well placed single. Nick Carlo followed with in an RBI of his own in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-1. Atlee head coach John Corbin was relieved to see his team pick up the pace in the fifth inning. “Early on we left a lot of guys on base, we just couldn’t get that timely hitting,” said Corbin. In the fifth and sixth we were able to put crooked numbers on the board and anytime you do that you put the game out of reach.” The Atlee hitting was impressive but the starting pitcher, Adam Jewell, was also impressive. Jewell pitched a complete game only allowing one run against the talented hitters on the No. 3 seeded Jaguars. There was a stark contrast in pitching between the teams

MECHANICSVILLE – There’s a fine line between aggressiveness and recklessness when roaming the base paths. Friday night, to begin their quest for a fourth consecutive state championship, the Atlee Raiders found the right balance, running away, literally and figuratively, from the Matoaca Warriors 8-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Region 5B tournament. Atlee raced to a 4-0 lead in the first inning as leadoff hitter Kelly Ayer singled, raced to third when Alyssa Bernardini’s sacrifice bunt attempt became an infield single, and scored when Jordan Durbin grounded out to second. Two batters later, Kayla Maxson slapped a single to center, scoring Rachel see RAIDERS, pg. 27

Miller breaks new ground for Atlee lacrosse By Tim Pearrell Richmond Times-Dispatch ASHLAND – Kate Miller is a freshman at Atlee High School, but that designation doesn’t apply on the lacrosse field. “She really doesn’t play like a freshman, emotionally, verbally, as a leader,” Atlee coach Christina Dobson said. “She just kind of has a different maturity and lacrosse IQ.” Miller broke the school record for goals in her first 12 games. She added six more along with two assists in her 13th as the Raiders stayed unbeaten with a 17-3 victory over Mills Godwin in the Region 5B semifinals Saturday at Randolph-Macon. Top-seeded Atlee will play No. 2 Deep Run (10-3) for the region title on Tuesday at R-MC. The Wildcats got five goals from Anna Smith and four each from Morgan Whitaker and Kelly Wyman and pulled away from Douglas Freeman in the second half for a 15-8 victory in the other semifinal. Both teams earned a berth in the state tournament. Miller has been playing lacrosse since the first grade. The sport runs in the family, so it’s not surprising she’s been a force as a freshman. She’s a midfielder who can score, facilitate and defend. She’s among the team leaders in assists. “I’m a very aggressive player,” she said. “I like to go after the ball. I’m a middie, but I’m more attack-minded. I like to shoot, but I love how it feels when other girls have an amazing goal or you have an assist. I don’t think our team is a very individualized team. We have so many great players.” With Miller stepping in, the

had two. Freshman goalie Stella Harrison had five saves. Freshman Landin Bostian had two goals for Godwin (8-7). “I think we’re coming to our peak,” Dobson said. “I’m really proud of our defensive unit. This is the best I’ve seen them play.” Deep Run coach Rachel Haislip said her team didn’t play its best game against Freeman (8-6), but it was enough to get back to the state tournament. The Wildcats’ last trip was 2015. After Deep Run jumped to a 4-1 lead, the Rebels kept answering. Three consecutive goals by Whitaker, Smith and Wyman in the second half gave Deep Run a 12-6 cushion. Freeman got three goals from Courtney Teyssier, two goals and two assists from Leanne Larkin, and 14 saves from goalie Gabriella Mignardi. Whitaker, a senior who is going to Michigan, missed her freshman and sophomore seasons after suffering ACL tears in each knee. Hanover girls advance to region semifinal By Jonathan Howard For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – The Hanover girls soccer team typically likes to attack opposing defenses with precision passing and shots from inside the box. On Thursday night in a Region 4B quarterfinal, the Hawks were forced to change strategy – and won anyway. Junior forward Rachel Andrzejewski netted three goals and added an assist to lead Hanover to a 5-0 victory over King George that mostly came from outside the box. “They were looking for us to come in short and we played from outside, so I think that’s what disrupted their game,” said Hanover head coach Manny Tavares. “They were looking for my two forwards to be inside so we changed our game.” Four of Hanover’s goals came from more than 18 yards out. The first came from forward Lauren Didlake who punched a free kick from roughly 25 yards out over King George keeper Katrina Anderson just under four minutes into the game. Eight minutes later, Andrzejewski scored her first goal, a long-distance missile that went over the keeper’s head. Andrzejewski’s second score capped off the first-half scoring and came in the more traditional method. Mackenzie Hoang crossed in a pass from the right side of the box, where the forward collected it and finished from up close. In the second half, Andrzejewski set up a longrange goal from Sarah LePeter before adding one more of her own. “Rachel is just getting stronger as the season goes on,” Tavares said of his senior. Hanover will host the winner of the Eastern View-

Foxes scored on a scramble in front of the net with 24 minutes remaining in the first half for the game’s only goal. King George dominated possession

in the first half and used their size to control the ball. “They were big. They were really big,” said Hanover coach Laurent Body of the visiting

Foxes. “When [Hanover] saw these big guys, we played very low right at the beginning.” King George’s Ryan Kuberek scored the game’s only goal after

a shot was tipped by Hanover starting keeper Zachary Cannon. The ball went on to hit the crossbar and bounce around in the box. Kuberek and Cannon both ran after the ball, and the King George midfielder slid in and got to it first. With the second half came a renewed energy from the Hanover side. The Hawks, who were held in check offensively in the first half, began to pick their way through the King George defense in the second half. Ashton Poythress, Ian Glisson and Nathaniel Soiland began to make runs and get shots at the Foxes net. “We started to pass more accurately and had more desire to attack the ball,” Body said. “We were aggressive enough to get over their physical superiority.” But while the attack got stronger, so did the play of King George keeper Cole Lipinski. The senior finished the game with six saves, multiple coming from point-blank range when the Hanover forwards made deep runs. What looked to be good looks on frame turned into Lipinski saves and deflections – and no goals. “A good keeper has luck. I think he’s a good goalkeeper. A good keeper is going to provoke his luck,” Body said, adding a tip of the cap to the senior. Hanover keeper Austin Garrett, who entered midway through the first half, shined in the loss. The senior recorded six saves of his own, with some, like Lipinski, coming on what seemed to be sure-fire goals. “Their coach might think they could have won 4-0,” Body said. “But, it was really close four or five times on their side too.” Jonathan Howard can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

Morgan Kazelskis and Sherry Weis led the Hawks, Kazelskis with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Megan Ferlazzo and Weis with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marissa McCoy. Mary Moon, Georgia Temple and Brooke Kazelskis also won for the Hawks. Right, the Hawk boys dominated the Region 4B singles tournament, with Hanover No. 1 Turner Cole (left) and No. 2 Ross Violi eliminating the competition to meet in the title match, which Cole won 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

Green, who ran for catcher Emily Friel, who walked. April Hooper followed with an RBI single to plate Maxson, giving starter Rachel Davis plenty of comfort in the circle the rest of the way. “The lead my teammates gave me really helped me relax, already more than I am,” Davis explained. “I know they can back me up when I’m pitching.” The Raiders were just doing what their coaches preached. “We talk about it all the time. We need to take advantage of every opportunity we get,” said Atlee head coach

Tom McIntyre. “We’re trying to really push the envelope when it comes to base running, but really be smart about it ... understanding how to read defensive positions when we’re base running.” Atlee showed that understanding again in the second inning, scoring three more runs in what began as a rerun of the first inning: Ayer singled and advanced to third on a Bernardini single. Ayer scored on a wild pitch to Durbin, who subsequently walked. Bernardini and Durbin both scored when Davis launched a single into right field for the 7-0 lead. The Raiders were in firm control from the opening pitch

thanks, in part, to Davis, who allowed just one hit while fanning eight Matoaca batters in a 92-pitch complete-game gem. Davis threw first strike pitches to 17 of 25 Warriors, constantly putting pressure on Matoaca’s batters. “We told [Rachel], we’re here to help you. We’re going to come out and we’re going to put up runs, and you can take a deep breath, and just rip away, and she did a great job,” McIntyre said. “She was hitting on all cylinders.” The victory, coupled with Lee-Davis’ 11-1 triumph over Deep Run, set up the third and final encounter between Hanover County rivals who, in the past two years, have met in

team.” Deep Run (10-4) beat Freeman 13-12 in overtime on April 27, and another close game turned on two sequences. The Rebels took a 7-5 lead 1.8 seconds from halftime when Brandon Smith rifled a long pass to Thomas Laughlin on the doorstep. After Deep Run got within 8-7, Burke scored three consecutive goals to give Freeman some cushion. “I was just feeling it a little,” Burke said. “They were giving me space.” Said Hovis: “He’s a really hard player to guard. He has some unorthodox dodging techniques and really kind of played to his potential tonight. He played a great game, the best game of the season for him.” Chucker made 17 saves. He got enough of one shot to deflect it into the crossbar, then scooped it up when it dropped in front of the goal. Whether it was playing for another trip to the state tournament or not playing for 18 days, Atlee unleashed an intensity level that Raiders coach Fielding Crawford wasn’t sure the Class 5 state tournament. he’s seen this season. “We’ve always been an When they battle Wednesday night at Mills Godwin High School in Henrico at 7 p.m., only one will advance to state tournament play. Davis, who shut out the Confederates 2-0 in this year’s first meeting, then watched Lee-Davis come from behind for an 8-7, nine-inning victory in the rematch, knows what she will do in preparation. “I’m just going in as if we’ve never played them before,” Davis said. “It’s a new game. I’m going to do my thing, and I know my team will be there to back me up.” Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

intense, aggressive team, but I just thought they took it to a new level tonight,” he said. Atlee, which is heavy on juniors, lost only to private school power St. Christopher’s during the regular season. Since that game, the Raiders have outscored opponents 126-29 in seven wins. With Kevin Dunne winning draws, Atlee dominated possession and allowed Godwin (8-7) few scoring chances. “We just wanted to start off with a bang,” said junior Andrew Cook, who scored six goals and had an assist. “We’ve been tired of beating up on each other [in practice]. We know Godwin is a good opponent.” Ian Shirey added four goals, and Aidan Shields had three for Atlee, which has endured the heartache of losing by a goal in each of the past three 5A state championship games. “We played great,” said Cook, who has committed to Richmond, where his brother, Jack, is a rising junior. “Every person played as well as they should be playing. I think our defense really stepped up. … I think our offense just finished when we had opportunities, and that’s what we need in the playoffs.” Tim Pearrell can be reached at tpearrell@timesdispatch.com.
