ASHLAND -- Hanover County School Board members are considering a change in school attendance zones for residents of a new subdivision proposed near the intersection of New Ashcake Road and U.S. 301. Students who reside in the area of the proposed Caldwell Park subdivision attend Pearson’s Corner Elementary School, Chickahominy Middle School and Atlee High School. Projected attendance num-

bers figured over a five-year period indicate the increased number of Caldwell Park students would place all three of those schools at over-capacity enrollment levels. Based on five-year projections after build-out of the proposed development, enrollment would increase by 143 students at Pearson’s Corner and over 70 at both Chickahominy and Atlee. When those same numbers are run with an attendance zone change, none of the increases would result

in over-capacity scenarios. Students from Caldwell Park would attend Rural Point Elementary School, Oak Knoll Middle School and Hanover High School if the adjustment was approved. “We took the same buildout number and compared to those schools. At the end of five years, none of those schools would be over 100 percent capacity,” Terry Stone, assistant superintendent for finance, said. A similar approval was issued regarding students from

Garrison Manor in 2015. The school board adopted a policy change in 2015 that allows board members to consider changing attendance zones for new developments that pose capacity problems for existing placements at Atlee High School and its feeder schools. Stone presented the enrollment numbers for board information and discussion at the June 12 meeting, but it is unclear when the item would be placed on the panel’s action see HCSB, pg. 4

Stigma of mental illness must be erased By Melody Kinser Managing Editor The recent suicide deaths of celebrity personalities Kate Space and Anthony Bourdain have placed a spotlight on a topic that, sadly, is far too often hidden away or discussed in hushed tones. Mental illness is just that: an illness. A conversation last week with a physician turned to the deaths of Spade and Bourdain and the growing number of people taking their own lives in this country. A tragic part of dealing with mental illness is the stigma still attached after years of open dialogue to the situation. We’ve all heard the stories about hiding away loved ones who suffered from varying conditions of mental illness. It’s heartbreaking to think about someone

being locked in an attic or basement to avoid the public knowing about an all too real illness. Whether it’s depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsion disorder (OCD) or schizophrenia, among others, it is an illness -- no different than high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes. There appears to be a generational stigma about openly discussing or confronting mental illness. For those who still consider it a taboo topic, shame on you. How do those who need treatment feel comfortable to seek help if they’re being subjected to less than kind reactions? Until you walk in someone’s shoes who is dealing with any of the issues listed, keep your judgmental opinions to yourself. If you know someone who is battling any form of mental illness, please offer support and compas-

sion. Yes, some of these illnesses may be lifelong while others may be treated through counseling or medication. My father died suddenly in July 1992 and sent my world reeling. I didn’t seek medical attention in facing the loss, because a co-worker’s father also passed away unexpectedly just weeks before mine. We formed a bond and spent a lot of time together talking and socializing with friends. That friendship, which remains intact, helped both of us through a traumatic time. I can’t imagine the grief the Spade and Bourdain families are experiencing. Both left young children. My prayer is for a more sensitive society because we never know what someone is going through in life. We aren’t the judges; we should be the support.

Last week, International House of Pancakes, better known to all of us as IHOP, abandoned that recognizable

Recognizing the reality that a little suspense might add just the right amount of drama to the unveiling of its new name, restaurant officials announced the new name on Tuesday, June 12. When that tidbit of information was released, it sent the social media world into a frenzy trying to decipher

The Cannery will be open on Saturdays in September and October. On Mondays during these months, processing can take place between 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (the Cannery closes at 10:30 p.m. on Mondays). On the other days of the week, processing can take place between 9 and 10:30 a.m., with the Cannery closing at 4 p.m. The canning process must begin during these designated times in order to have the process completed by the Cannery closing time. Processes that take longer than the average of five hours must be approved in advance by the Cannery supervisor.

To check on the availability before you travel, call the Cannery supervisor at 804365-6484. For Hanover County residents, the cost is $1.17 a can or .30 cents a jar. For those who do not live in Hanover County, the charge is $1.32 per can and .40 cents per jar. You must bring your own jars. Additional charges apply for use of the kettle, blancher or corn machine. Thomas Elton â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tomâ&#x20AC;? Cordle, 54, formerly from Kenbridge, tragically lost his life on June 6, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Coye B. and Mable N. Cordle. He is survived by his siblings, CB Cordle (Naleen) CORDLE of Blackstone, Neilann Brown (Ralph) of New Kent and Maryjo Stallings (Tommy) of Mechanicsville; nieces and nephews, Trey and Blaine Cordle, Katie and Sara Brown, Jim and Hilary Stallings; two great-nieces and four greatnephews. Uncle Tom was born on May 3, 1964, and shared a birthday with his mother. He grew up on a family farm in Kenbridge, where he loved to fish and hunt as a kid. He never lost his love for fishing. Uncle Tom was an upholsterer for 30-plus years and worked most of them at Oak Tree Upholstery in Crewe. He was a huge Washington Redskins fan with a gentle soul and huge heart. If you ever needed him, he was always there. He enjoyed spending time with his family and volunteering with his sister at St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Catholic Church. Uncle Tom was a great son, brother, uncle and friend. He touched everyone who was lucky enough to meet him. He will truly be missed by all. He will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

ELIZABETH COOPER DAVIS Elizabeth Cooper Davis, of Mechanicsville, passed away at MCV Hospital on

May 29, 2018. Beth was born in Buffalo, New York, to the late Suzanne H. Cooper and George M. Cooper, M.D. Beth attended Baker University and Rosary Hill College, graduating with a degree in the sciences and eventually retiring as a Laboratory Supervisor in the Human Genetics Department at MCV/VCU. Beth was preceded in death by her husband, Ian J. Davis. She is survived by her sister, Melinda C. Biersbach; and brother, George H. Cooper; two stepdaughters, Traci D. Munyan and Stephanie D. Terry; three nephews, four great-nephews and many dear friends. All miss her deeply. Bethâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s final wish for those she knew and loved would be to live as she had -- with joy, generosity and a genuine urge to live each day to its fullest. ERNEST EARL â&#x20AC;&#x153;CORKYâ&#x20AC;? EVANS Ernest Earl â&#x20AC;&#x153;Corkyâ&#x20AC;? Evans, 73, of Hanover, went to be with His Lord, peacefully, on Monday, June 11, 2018. Born in Hammond, Indiana, he was the son of the late Ernest and Hazel Evans. He traveled the world as a child with his Navy family. He was a graduate of EVANS Highland Springs High School and went on to receive his bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degrees at the University of Richmond. Ernest specialized in institutional financial management.

He was passionate about his family, travel and faith and served in numerous capacities at St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Episcopal Church and Richmond Community Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife and high school sweetheart, Kay Thomas Evans. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Peggy C. Adams; son, Patrick (Sally); daughter, Blair Ellis (Berk); daughter, Sherri Derouchie (Andre) of Ottawa, Canada; seven loving grandchildren, Adam, Alex, Samantha, Sydney, Aidan, Sophia and Thomas; one greatgrandson, Grayson; brother, Richard Evans (Karen). Ernest and Peggy delighted in travelling the world together, visiting 28 countries through the development of their Beauticontrol business. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. FRANK W. GREENDAY Frank W. Greenday, 59, of Mechanicsville, died on June 5, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born on May 10, 1959, in Hickory, North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, of 35 years, Laura Greenday; daughters, GREENDAY Kayley A. and Allison F. Greenday; mother, Jettie Greenday; sister, Sonya Rutledge; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eric and Kristin Greenday, Phillip and Mary Greenday and Bob and Barbra Humphrey; nieces and nephews, Andrew Rutledge, Jill Humphrey, Ric Greenday, Megan Peterson and Casey Lee Greenday; great-nieces and nephews, Elias and Marja Humphrey, Addilyn Greenday, Brayden Peterson and Able Rutledge; along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Frankâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s priority was always his family. He was a devoted father to Kayley and Allison and a wonderful friend and husband to Laura. He loved

visiting his family in the mountains of North Carolina. Frank was a lifelong Lutheran, being raised in the faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Richmond. He taught confirmation class and served on the council at Christ Lutheran Church in Richmond, where he was a member. He attended Lenoir Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina, receiving a B.A. in history and later his M.Ed. in special education from James Madison University. He had a long career in special education, beginning at Grafton School in Berryville and Northwestern Regional Educational Program in Winchester. He taught and served as Director of Cumberland Academy at Cumberland Hospital in New Kent before becoming a Consultant with the Hospital Education Program (Virginia Department of Education), where he worked with children and their families via specialty clinics at MCV. Most recently, he served as a teacher at Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital of Richmond, Brook Road Campus. Frank was an avid lifelong Green Bay Packers fan and proud shareholder of the team. He found great joy in his frequent travels to Lambeau Field. Frank also was a long-time fan and season ticket holder of the VCU Rams basketball team. Frank made friends everywhere he lived, worked and traveled. He was adored by his family, friends, co-workers and the children with whom he worked. He touched many lives in immeasurable ways, and his loss is deeply felt. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Christ Lutheran Church at 7809 Woodman Road. Interment will be private in the mountains of North Carolina. Audrey would say that she had her only child, Kristie, “late in life” and raised her in the church. For many years, Audrey taught Sunday School to the children in her church. At the end of her life, she spent her days at Beaufont Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she enjoyed puzzles and spending time with her friends in the activity room. Audrey’s smile captured the hearts of her kind and loving caretakers at Beaufont. She passed away peacefully while resting and was surrounded by the love of her friends and family. A Memorial Service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Elkhardt Baptist Church

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Dallas, 515395, is a 1½-year-old male neutered Labrador retriever. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Dallas was surrendered to the shelter in late May. He is a sweet boy who has lots of energy. Dallas does really well on a leash. He loves to go on long walks. Dallas will do best in a household where he is the only dog. He does well with people. Flames, 513161, a 5-year-old male domestic medium hair feline. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Flames is a special kitty. He came to the shelter last month very sick. Through great veterinary care, Flames is back to normal. He also is super sweet. Flames has a laid-back disposition. He does really well socializing with all people. He also is well littertrained. Flames will make a good indoor/ outdoor cat. of your public education that has led you to this important moment. Thirteen years. That is a significant portion of your life spent in pursuit of one goal — a goal that you will reach very shortly. I wonder, though, if you’ve ever stopped and thought, “What now?” No, I don’t mean the more obvious responses, such as college, military, career, or even beach week. I mean the question in a much larger sense, as in: “What does it all mean?” Robert Fulghum wrote a book of short essays entitled, All I Really Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten. From the title, you might surmise that he is suggesting you have wasted the last 12 years of your life, and we could have held a similar ceremony when you were only 5 or 6 years old. Although his message transcends this notion, Fulghum does, in fact, make a compelling case. For instance, in one essay, he lists a variety of essential life skills that we learn. The first 10 go like this: 1. Share everything. 2. Play fair. 3. Don’t hit people. 4. Put things back where you found them. 5. Clean up your own mess. 6. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. 7. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. 8. Wash your hands before you eat. 9. Flush. 10. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. It’s hard to argue with any of this advice. Will it be all that you need in order to be successful for the rest of your life? Probably not. I think that Fulghum’s larger point, though, is that the lessons we

learned in our most formative years are applicable for a lifetime. For many of us, we made some of the best memories of our lives while viewing the world through the lens of a child. In the same book, Fulghum writes, “I want to be 5 years old again for an hour. I want to laugh a lot and cry a lot. I want to be picked up or rocked to sleep in someone’s arms, and carried up to bed just one more time.”

The message he delivered that evening is among the most memorable of the last quarter century, and among the most impactful, as it launched his V Foundation for Cancer Research. Obviously, for him, those days were perhaps among his very best. I, too, believe that we should strive to extend the innocence of childhood as long as possible, but I also feel that we can make incredible memories at any point during our lives. When we were children, though, a wide range of emotions seemed more vivid and occurred with more frequency. Perhaps, those who seek to reclaim their childhood, to be the Ponce de Leon in search of the fountain of youth, are really trying to recapture the vibrancy of life that is often experienced at a younger age. What if we could do just that, though? That is, experience life to its fullest every day. The following setting is in stark contrast to an author reflecting on his childhood. It was 1993 and Jim Valvano, former basketball coach at North Carolina State University, was accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian

simple lessons of his youth. Coach Valvano said, “To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.” Facing the end of his life, Valvano was trying to live every day to its fullest. One might say, he appreciated it as a child might. During the same speech, he joked about the fact that he was being given a cue to wrap it up so that the TV network could cut to the scheduled commercial break and get on with the show. He contin-

ued speaking anyway, noting that those types of worries were no longer concerns for him. It put things in perspective for all of those privileged enough to hear him, whether in person or on television, and, frankly, no one wanted him to stop. Robert Fulghum was on to something in his book. Kindergarten was a simpler time, with fewer cares and new experiences every day. However, as important as that first year was, we do not learn everything we need to know in kindergarten. So, what does it all mean? It means that the 12 years that followed your initial year of schooling has molded you into the person you are today. The lessons you have learned, the knowledge you have gained, and the experiences you have had can help you to approach life in a more meaningful way than when you were younger … if you will allow it to happen. Now, as you prepare for the next chapter in your lives and begin to take on the mounting responsibilities of adulthood, I challenge you to take stock of what might appear important at the time versus those things that actually are important as Coach Valvano demonstrated. Perhaps then, we can slow down enough to laugh, to cry, to think, and to experience many more of those “full days” that he was describing. I also have to believe that some of those things that are truly important are the same timeless truths that Robert Fulghum described. So, as you take your next steps, I also challenge you to play fair, say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody, and take the time to enjoy some warm cookies and cold milk. Congratulations, Class of 2018. May each of you enjoy many more full days, and may you impact others so that they may do the same.

The Scotchtown Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) presented its annual Youth Citizenship Awards to Hanover County students on Sunday, June 3, at Fairfield Presbyterian Church. This award is presented to girls or boys in fifth, eighth and 12th grades (public, private or parochial), who fulfill the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership and patriotism. High school senior DAR Good Citizens also are recognized at their individual schools. Dr. Jamelle S. Wilson, former superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, from 2011-2015 and currently the dean of the School of Professional and Continuing Studies at the University of Richmond spoke to the students about service and leadership. The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.

To be eligible, the household must have at least one vulnerable individual aged 60 or older, disabled, or a child under age 6. Assistance is based on the availability of funds and is first-come, first-serve. HANOVER -- Application forms for the Cooling Assistance program offered by the Hanover County Department of Social Services are available online. The Hanover DSS started processing applications for its Cooling Assistance Program on Friday, June 15. This program runs through Aug. 15 or until the money is gone. Cooling Assistance, offered through the Virginia Department of Social Services Energy Assistance Program, helps eligible households meet costs related to cooling one’s home. This can include: Payment of electric bills (up to a determined maximum) to operate cooling equipment. Payment of security deposits for electricity to operate cooling equipment.
