HANOVER -- When Bear Island closed the doors at its Hanover County facility more than a year ago, the economic loss for the county was significant. But, the real impact was felt by the 165 employees who lost their well-paying jobs. An upcoming announcement by Gov. Ralph Northam is breathing new life into the shuttered plant and bringing some of those jobs back to Hanover County. Cascades Inc. of Canada announced plans this week to invest $275 million to open the first pulp production facility in the United States. The company’s website provides insight regarding the scope of their operations.

Hundley and Bourassa elected to lead school board in the new year ASHLAND -- Hanover County School Board members turned to a familiar face to lead the panel for the upcoming year. Bob Hundley was selected as chair during the June 10 regular reorganization session. First appointed in 2004, the Chickahominy District representative accepted a third turn with the gavel and has served as vice chair several times during his tenure. Current vice chair Roger Bourassa, Mechanicsville District, was selected to fill a second term in that position. Hundley thanked his fellow board members for their unanimous vote of support. Following the meeting, he identified several areas of focus for the upcoming year. “I’m very appreciative of the board’s support and confidence, Hundley said. “I want to continue to work closely
with the board and our business community and mentorships, all of that correlating with the Department of Education changes to the profile of a graduate and getting more real world opportunities ‌ for our students.â€? He also pointed to continued progress for the school system’s five-year technology plan, now in its second year. “We’re very excited to roll out the technology plan, the laptops for teachers that we have been able to do,â€? Hundley said. “We are extremely pleased that our county board of supervisors has supported and funded this initiative on our behalf and looking forward to all of the instructional opportunities that will allow our students.â€? Outgoing chair Sue Dibble, South Anna District, thanked board members and said she is looking forward to devoting more time to a special time in her son’s life, his senior year.
In other business, a group of Patrick Henry High School students took advantage of a public comment period to voice their support for PHHS principal Beth Smith. The students were joined by one long-time employee at the campus. Betty Tyler asked the board, “What is going on with our principal? she asked, referring to a whirlwind of rumors regarding the status. “We’ve heard rumors and everyone wants answers from me but I can’t give them if I don’t know the answer, she said. “She is a good principal and loves the kids, Tyler said. Other students said Smith was there for them in difficult situations and was a great support for them personally. “She has been there 24/7 for a lot of students who can’t advocate for themselves, said rising PHHS senior Harris. “It’s hard being an African American student at Patrick Henry High School.
Superintendent Michael Gill told board members he could not comment on matters that involved personnel issues, but thanked and commended the students for their “poised comments. Another matter brought before the board was what a part-time bus driver described a dangerous situation that he said occurs daily. He also offered a possible solution. Frank Marotta said it’s almost a daily occurrence that

This year’s Fill the Boot campaign officially begins Aug. 1 and runs through Sept. 3 at hundreds of locations across Greater Virginia.
Thousands of firefighters will fan out across the city with boots in hand as they greet citizens asking them to make a donation in support of MDA’s mission to find treatments and cures for muscle-debilitating diseases. Funds raised through 2018 Fill the Boot events help MDA’s efforts to fund groundbreaking research and life-enhancing programs, such as s t ate - of - t h e - ar t support groups and Care Centers, including the MDA Care Center at VCU Health Systems and Children’s Hospital at VCU. The plant produced more than 240,000 metric tons of pulp-based newsprint annually. Gov. International companies continue to choose the Commonwealth for its world-class workforce and out-

The location in Hanover County offers Cascades a turnkey facility ready for the company to install equipment and put a shuttered asset back into use, creating good jobs for Virginia workers in the region.” Hanover County Board of Supervisors chairman Sean Davis, Henry District, welcomed news that jobs will be returning to Hanover County and an important part of the county’s economy is making a return appearance. In a prepared statement, Davis said, “As chairman of the board, I want to welcome Cascades to Hanover County,” Davis said. “The Bear Island facility has played a critical role
someone ignores his stopped bus arm device and blinking lights and runs through without stopping. The extended stop arm prevents vehicles from passing through the bus zone and possibly striking children. “In the first week of school, I was passed with my stop arm extended every day at least once in the morning and once in the afternoon,” Marotta said. “Buses seem to be invisible to other drivers.” Marotta said there were only 19 convictions last year for the offense, largely due to the difficulty in identifying offenders. While mounted cameras do capture some drivers who ignore the stop arm, they require a large amount of storage space for the hours of data collected. He endorsed the extended stop arm solution to the problem. Mary Adams represents Bus Safety Solutions, the company that manufactures the extended stop arm, and said about 700 buses are equipped with the device, some of them located in five counties in Virginia. In Albemarle County, initial tests indicated the extended stop arm reduces violations by more than 50 percent. “The extended stop arm is in the local Hanover economy for almost 40 years and we are excited to see that continue with the capital investm e n t being made to up-fit and reDAVIS purpose the plant along with the new jobs that this announcement will bring.” The Toronto-based company specializes in packaging and tissue paper production and employs more than 11,000 employees worldwide.

OPINION | The Local Views From the managing editor
Octogenarians prove that friendship is a lifetime By Melody Kinser Managing Editor While many of us will be blessed to live into our 80s, there are two women -- both 87 now, with one preparing for her 88th birthday -- who have been best friends for eight decades. Sally Scaggs and my mother became friends as little girls in the 1930s in a coal camp in southwestern West Virginia. They have a remarkable bond and incredible memories that they still enjoy sharing. Sally and her husband left the hills of West Virginia in the 1950s for him to pursue employment opportunities in the steel mills in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. Despite the distance -- and the fact that the interstate system was just moving forward -Sally and Mom remained as close as they were as children. Although the fourth of five daughters,
Mom was the first to get a driver’s license. Sally braved the new driving skills Mom acquired as a teenager. They would go skating and both liked to dance. Mom has several black and white photos of them with other young women looking glamorous while at the pool. Based on the hairdos and makeup, I doubt any of them ever set foot in the water. When Mom was 20, she was struck by a car when she exited the bus returning home from work. She was dragged about 300 feet. The road was snow-covered and the vehicle had caught her coat. She suffered a broken leg and was bedfast as she recovered. During her recuperation, Sally came to visit with a handsome man from a neighboring county. Well, that initial visit led to a courtship and marriage by year’s end. Dad told Mom in April that he would
marry her by the end of the year, 1951, and did so on Dec. 29. A few months later, Sally married Don and the four settled into family lives, but the friendship strengthened with the men becoming best buddies. Sally and Don’s daughters were born between my sister Robin and me. I have so many good memories of vacations with the Scaggs family. With them living in Cleveland, we were exposed to culture and art. I’ll never forget seeing the skeletal remains of a brontosaurus in a Cleveland museum. But I digress (typical, I derail often). Sally, like Mom, is now living with her remaining daughter. Both women lost their oldest daughters in recent years. Patty Reynolds invited her mother to join her and her husband Rick when they left Ohio for North Carolina. It’s a bonus for us. Rather than a seven-hour drive, they’re about half that
distance now. As a matter of fact, they came for a visit on July 7. We treated them to a nice lunch at the Hanover Tavern. I delight in our county’s history, especially its role in our nation’s birth. Patty was taking photos around the Tavern and courthouse complex area. I also drove by Historic Polegreen Church, which became one of my favorite locales when I first moved here. The one staple in the visit was the relationship Sally and Mom still have. It’s always as if they saw each other the day before. That is a true and lasting friendship. I keep using the word friendship, when, in actuality, we’re family. Blood doesn’t define that relationship. Yes, they are blessed -- but so are those of us who are in their world.
Untold stories are sometimes best left undisturbed By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
A crusty old editor once told me, “If you want to succeed in community journalism, learn to be a jack of all trades and try to master something.” I suppose that was shortly before I began covering sports for a small newspaper that served a rural county.
It’s strange that, some three decades later, some of those first memories of misty fall nights on the sidelines enter my recall with the least friction. On one of those normal nights that found me on a remote football field with half-filled stands, I barely noticed a halftime ceremony that honored past heroes from a glorious

sports history of a once prominent program. I only took notice when the announcer reeled off a list of records held by a running back, a man whose name was unfamiliar to me. But, the numbers were astounding, almost inhuman and the feats described seemed almost fictional. The man who walked slowly to
midfield was now middle-aged, still wiry and easy with his step, his short hair now grayed. He bowed slightly in thanks as he accepted a small wooden plaque. I jotted the name down in my notebook. It was one of those stories that I couldn’t get out of my mind, more motivated by curiosity than a dedication to sports journalism.

It was early in my career and I’m not sure I would have known a good story if it arrived on tablets from above, but I couldn’t forget the endless questions I had surrounding this story. During the next few months, I poked around for answers. There was no sign of the whereabouts of the athlete, more than two decades since his heroics on the football field. Finally, I met a man who played on the same team with this superstar. He told a story of disappointment and lost opportunity that confronted a 17-year-old country boy as the standout running back left town on a full scholarship to a prestigious Southern university. He arrived in July and he was back home in Virginia by late August. The teammate explained how the star athlete made a bad decision when he first arrived on the campus and had been see STORIES, pg. 8

“put off ” the team and sent home. Further research revealed it was a misguided decision regarding marijuana that ended the young boy’s career. “He was the best running back that no one ever heard of,” the teammate said. When I finally sat down with the still fit running back later that year, it was immediately obvious it was a memory best forgotten. And, by all indications, the youthful mistake had not lastingly impacted his life. Upon his return, he enrolled in community college and eventually attended a state school and graduated. But, he never picked up another football, even declining requests to coach his son’s peewee football team. He explained that things had not gone well when he arrived at the larger-than-life campus, and coaches were immediately concerned with his slight frame and lack of bulk. “They wanted to make me a defensive back or wide receiver,” he told me. Most of our conversation involved his family, the achievements of his children and his commitment to his community. He spoke of those few months after high school graduation as a series of youthful missteps. To his credit, he learned from his mistakes and didn’t dwell on the past, refusing to let one mistake
in life dictate how the rest of it would evolve. At the end of our conversation, he told me he would rather not be part of a newspaper story. He described a life that followed the straight and narrow since his return from college that fall. The one mistake had not defined or confined the shifty running back. All that remained were a few newspaper clippings and a list of records that will probably stand forever. There were no videos reflecting his talent, no retired jersey on the wall of the gym, and that’s the way he wanted it. Finally, I knew the story. I also was assured it was a story that wouldn’t be told by me. I lamented that no one would know a story of redemption and a message that no obstacle is big enough to destroy a destiny. It was the first lesson in the power of untold stories and the people who inspired them. I wondered how many other untold stories are out there, better left undisturbed or investigated. For a young journalist, it was a valuable reminder that discovering a tragic event or episode in someone’s past is sometimes not a legitimate news story. I often reminisce regarding past stories I’ve told, the many amazing people I’ve met along the way and the impact they’ve had on me. In this case, it’s the story that wasn’t told that made the lasting impression. I realized that getting the big story is important, but not writing it is, in rare cases, the admirable choice.

She continued her education at St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in 1947. In 1948, she began her teaching career back at her alma matter, R.R. Moton High, as one of the home economics teachers. In 1953, while teaching at R.R. Moton High School, she witnessed the historic student “Walk Out,” led by Barbara Johns. This event helped lead to the case of “Brown v. Board of Education” and an end to school segregation. Later, in protest to integration requirements, Prince Edward County shut down its public school system for five years. Black and white students suffered due to this action. This required Hilda to find employment elsewhere. She held positions in Cumberland, Amelia and Hanover. Eventually, Hilda

11-YEAR-OLD MECHANICSVILLE LITTLE LEAGUE ALL-STAR BASEBALL TEAM
M E C HA N IC S V I L L E -- The week of June 30, the 11-year-old Mechanicsville Little League (MLL) All-Star baseball team competed in the District 5 All-Star Tournament at Atlee Little League. The first game was against Ashland Little League on June 30. Ashland held the lead for a majority of the game; but MLL secured the win with a solid defense, ending the game with a final score of 5-3. On July 1, MLL played its second game in extreme heat against Huguenot Little
League. MLL took another win, with a final score of 6-2. After a few days’ rest, MLL played Tuckahoe Little LeagueAmerican and won its third game with a final score of 5-1. This win secured a place in the finals with a chance to advance to the state tournament. On July 7, MLL played in the finals against Tuckahoe Little League–National. Winning this game would secure a place in the state tournament; a loss would have resulted in playing another game to determine which team would advance to the state tournament. In a hardfought battle of defense, MLL
finished strong with a winning score of 3-1. MLL’s final win against Tuckahoe Little League–National gave the team an undefeated record of 4-0, sweeping the tournament. Those associated with the Little League extended their thanks to the families, friends and fans that came out to support them. MLL will be playing in the 2018 Virginia State Little League Baseball Tournament July 20-25 in Woodstock. As the Mechanicsville Little League members, coaches and see TEAM, pg. 20

Kiwanis, town raising funds for park equipment By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ASHLAND – With a goal of attracting children in the 5- to 12-year-old range to the Kiwanis Pufferbelly Park, the Kiwanis Club of Ashland and the Town of Ashland are raising money to purchase equipment for that age group. The park is located at 601 England St. in Ashland. On Thursday, Kiwanian Ranny Robertson, Ashland Clerk Joseph Collins and Ann Martin explained the joint venture. Suz Morrison also is working with them to get the funds. Through the Kiwanis Charitable Foundation, Robertson said a grant of $10,000 was donated to the town’s Parks and Recreation Department for the addition to the park. While they continue to pursue funding avenues, Robertson emphasized that “This is really a Kiwanis effort.” “The mission of Kiwanis is serving the children of the
world; here we’re serving the children of Ashland,” he said. “The idea here is to try to raise enough funds to get three pieces of equipment as the addition. We did some surveys of other schools, other towns, other locations that had children’s parks,” he added. Collins was at the Carter Park Pool on Saturday, June 9, to raise awareness of the fundraising project. He also took time to talk to kids going in and out of the pool, seeking their feedback on three different categories. The equipment the club and town are looking to buy “has motion, lots of physical activities for the kids, a lot of timing to it,” the three said. It incorporates two or three aspects in one piece of equipment.” “It is expensive, but it is quality,” they said. “It does a lot with providing the elements that we wanted for the older kids, with the idea that if we had something that was fun and challenging that they would come out of the house

and leave the electronic equipment.” At this point, the Kiwanis Club and town have selected
four pieces of equipment. While they realize they can’t purchase all four, they said they “certainly would like to buy two, like to push to get three.” Robertson noted that “The Town of Ashland has been gracious enough to rename the park to Kiwanis Pufferbelly Park.”
With that branding, he said he hopes it will provide an incentive for new members to join the club. The club’s role in the fundraising project includes members donating through the Foundation. “Kiwanians were involved from the beginning when the park was established,” Martin said. “They purchased and
installed the first playground equipment. Over the years, they have continued to be involved and have been over there and helped install some of the equipment that is there now.” Due to the club’s ongoing involvement over the years, Martin said, “Now we’re making the effort to address the see KIWANIS pg. 31

Atlee Majors fall in District 5 baseball final By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – After falling into the elimination bracket of the 2018 Little League District Five Majors Baseball Championship, the Atlee All-Stars realized it would take a herculean effort to defend their district title. In fact, they would find themselves as the underdog in their next three games, fighting to make it back to the championship round. But with eight players returning from the 2017 squad, Atlee head coach Bryan Lawlor knew his team would not be eliminated easy. Thus began a four-night odyssey which produced upsets, heart stopping moments, and a tournament to remember. “It’s invaluable at this point,” Lawlor said of the experience on the roster. “Our upset with Tuckahoe National was completely unexpected by probably about everybody that was in the park, a nine-inning game that went just over three hours long. It battle tested the boys, and showed them they could drop down to the other bracket and fight.” The 11-10 upset over Tuckahoe National was followed the next night by a battle with rival Mechanicsville, Atlee finding another way to stay alive by virtue of a 6-5 triumph. Then came the final step back to the

title round, a rematch with the Chesterfield team which sent them to the elimination bracket three days earlier. When Chesterfield roared to a 4-0 lead after just one inning, Lawlor turned to Conner Reese, handed him the ball in relief, and watched as Reese hurled five innings, allowing just one
run, giving his Atlee teammates the chance to, again, fight back. Fight back they did, as Atlee scored five runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, with later insurance runs giving enough cushion to survive a Chesterfield sixth inning comeback attempt for a 7-5 win. Atlee scrapped its way to victo-
ry, scoring runs in the fourth on a Chesterfield error, a fielder’s choice, an infield single, finally taking the lead on Shayne Lawlor’s two-out, two-strike double to right field to drive in two runs. It was Reese, who fanned seven in a 67-pitch performance, and timely defense that
clinched the win. Reese allowed his only run in the Chesterfield sixth. But Jonathan Eckert’s fine play of a grounder deep at third base to throw the batter out while holding runners at second and third, then Riley Bernardini’s throw to first on

GRAL swimmers scramble for Champs slots By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – With time running out before Champs, area GRAL teams are scrambling to get more of their swimmers qualified. Last week, Burkwood, Milestone and Old Church hosted meets and all three emerged victorious, despite the weather forcing either early ends or postponements. But more important for those three teams as well as Rockville (which visited Milestone) and Pebble Creek (which visited Old Church), the primary focus was on qualifying more swimmers for Champs, which will be held on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29, at SwimRVA. “We have 70 [qualifiers] so far, which is great,” said

his knees near second base on a ground ball for the second out prevented Chesterfield from scoring more than once and preserved the win. “Suffice it to say, what a little baller out there,” Lawlor said of Eckert, who had the presence of mind to prevent a run and throw a rocket to first base from behind third for the critical first out, halting the momentum swing in Chesterfield’s direction, the play preventing the tying run from reaching base. “He came on the mound against [Tuckahoe] National and shut them down, and he shows up here at third base.” The Atlee story would not have the fairy tale ending, however, Tuckahoe American awaited them in the championship round with an off day

Burkwood head coach Karen Seeber. “One a good day, we’ve got a lot of depth, which is exciting.” Burkwood’s closes rival in GRAL Division 1, Canturbury, had 51 qualifiers as of the weekend. Numbers are key to team victories, as more swimmers offer opportunities to score more points – especially as events are broken into different skill classes such as varsity, junior varsity, advanced, etc., which multiples the opportunities to score. For Rockville, weekly improvement has been extra important, as the Racers began their practice two weeks later because of renovations at their pool. But they, as do the other area teams, have one more shot to qualify swimmers for Champs – Tuesday night (after this edition went to press).
and with strong-armed Jackson York on the mound. A sevenrun first inning set the pace for the evening Thursday, as York handcuffed Atlee bats en route to a 17-0 win to claim the District Five crown. But Atlee fans will look back at 2018’s All-Stars, and memories will flood back from a series of comebacks, pitching gems, and defensive stands that proved that, despite not winning a banner, the team had the heart of a champion. At the Virginia Majors softball tournament, Atlee began with a pair of victories, 12-10 over Virginia Beach and 10-4 over Louisa on Friday. However, a 13-2 Saturday loss to McLean, the District Four champions, placed Atlee in the elimination bracket. They responded Sunday with a hard fought 9-5 victory over Broadway, setting up a Monday game in which Atlee would need two wins to

reach the championship round and get a rematch with McLean. The game took place after this edition went to press. Meanwhile, at the Babe Ruth Virginia 12U tournament in Fishersville, the Rockville AllStars swept their way to the state championship, outscoring opponents by a 51-7 margin. It took consecutive victories over Shenandoah, 5-1 Friday in the winners bracket final, then 9-5 in Saturday’s championship round, to claim the title. In the two wins, Reagan Litchford went a combined 5-for-7, while Brookelynne Winterson drove in one run in the first game, and two in the finals. Samantha Rao finished the championship game in relief of Maddie Winder in the sixth, earning the save. Rockville’s next stop is Jensen Beach, Florida, where the 2018 Babe Ruth 12U Softball World Series will begin on July 29.

older children. We need something more than slides or whatever; we need the equipment for the older children.” To acquire the particular piece of equipment wanted, an additional $10,000 to $15,000 is needed. Robertson said the Kiwanis Club wants to “make a good statement in this park so the town can be proud.” He said it is especially important to the club “because the town was so good to rename the park for the Kiwanis.” Martin said they want to provide “something for the kids that they will like, enjoy, and use. We’re trying to get the best that we can get.” “We’d like to have help,” Robertson added. He did say it is a “very, very nice piece of equipment.” The club and town representatives will meet on July 23 to make an award on the project. Having
the needed funding is imperative to moving forward. According to the Town of Ashland website, https://www.town. ashland.va.us/, Kiwanis Pufferbelly Park is located on Randolph Street between England and Myrtle streets. The site was purchased in 1992 to build a police facility. The remaining acreage is fully developed, with playground equipment already in use. The “village green” was developed and a skate park was installed in the fall of 2004. Robertson said it is rare that he goes by the park “that somebody’s not there.” For those wishing to help the Kiwanis Club and the town reach the goal needed for the park equipment, donations may be sent to: Ashland Kiwanis Charitable Foundation, P.O. 2045 Ashland VA 23005. Robertson said contributions need to be earmarked for the playground or Pufferbelly Foundation.

Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Hodnett
The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Ralph, 517376, is a 2-year-old male neutered Labrador retriever mix. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Ralph was surrendered to the shelter last month. He is a very good dog. Ralph does really well with most people he comes into contact with. He loves to walk on a leash. Ralph also is socialized with other dogs. He is used to living indoors. Pearl, 515921, is a spayed female domestic short-haired feline. She has been given her first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Pearl is one of many kittens they have here at the shelter. She is your typical playful kitten. She is full of playful energy. Pearl loves to be around people. She also has done really well using the litter tray. She will make a great companion for someone looking for a young, playful cat. For more information on these great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804365-6485 during the day.
