JSRCC president to retire Sept. 1 By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER -- Over the years, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College president Dr. Gary Rhodes has become a familiar face at meetings of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. For more than a decade, Rhodes has appeared annually to update members on the happenings at the Parham Road campus that serves thousands of county residents. Last week, Rhodes made his last appearance at that podium and thanked the board for that long and cooperative relationship, and bid farewell to colleagues whom he referred to as friends. After 16 years at the helm, Rhodes and his wife are retiring, headed to a small town near Hilton Head, South Carolina, to enjoy some well deserved time off. “I will not get up a 5 o’clock in the morning any longer and text my vice presidents and ask questions like ‘So how much snow did you get in Glen Allen?’ and decide what we are going to do about the college,” Rhodes said. “Today’s a little of a nostalgic experience because I sort of feel like we’ve been brothers and sisters for my 16 years,

and I’m going off to college,” Rhodes said. “It’s been a wonderful experience here.” Rhodes and his wife owned a home on Hilton Head for several years and recently sold it to move inland to a townhouse just off the island. Anne Marie Lauranzon also will be departing after two terms as Hanover’s representatives on the JSRCC board of directors. Stephanie Chalkley has been selected to assume that position on the board, serving alongside incumbent Marc Creery. “Thank you for Anne Marie and Mark. They’ve see JSRCC, pg. 7

Atlee extension project may offer new twist By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER -- An ongoing road construction project on Atlee Station Road in Mechanicsville may provide more headaches for Hanover County motorists than originally anticipated. Director of Public Works Mike Flagg told the Hanover County Board of Supervisors last week that the Atlee Road extension project might require the closing of Atlee Station Road for up to 30 days. Motorists have endured a number of detours and reroutes as the project progressed, but officials had hoped to avoid any closures of Atlee Station Road, a major Jim Ridolphi for The Local thoroughfare. ING WILLIAM -Last fall, for the first time in nearly 10 years, Indian View Baptist Church was without a senior pastor. The congregation contacted Joshua S. Lewis, a former guest revival preacher and King William native, to begin covering their Sunday worship services for them. After several months of worshipping together, the congregation extended an offer to Rev. Lewis to serve as their new interim pastor. On Sunday April 1, during the Sunday morning worship service, Lewis accepted the offer. For the past three months the congregation has seen a 25% increase in average Sunday attendance, a rise in new worshippers to the community and are on the verge of revamping its children’s ministry and facilities. One of the challenges facing the church, Rev. Lewis said, is “communicating to the general public that the historic church of the Upper Mattaponi tribe, is not just a tribal church, but is open to everyone in the community.” He said a pastoral transition “is the perfect opportunity for a congregation to reassess who they are, and where they are going.” The 76 year old congregation has rich cultural roots that are unique to most churches in Virginia, much less King William County. Indian View was started as a church for the Upper

Mattaponi Indian tribe and “will always celebrate that rich heritage.” In order to continue thriving as a witness in the community, Indian View is beginning to aggressively communicate that it is a church for all people, ethnicities, and religious backgrounds,” Lewis said. A resident of Mechanicsville, Lewis was born and raised in King William. He relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1997 where he graduated from Lindenwood University with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Christian Studies.
In May of this year, Lewis graduated from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, with a Master’s of Divinity and is applying for PhD programs that will allow him to conduct doctoral research in the field of theology. A Pentecostal Christian, Lewis is pastoring his third church and his second Southern Baptist congregation. “I think most people are less concerned with what name is above their church and more concerned with how God can be realized in their everyday life. I don’t think God is impressed with our church names or denominational titles. The average person isn’t either” Lewis said. According to Lewis, Indian View Baptist Church is on the verge of great things happening. He said the congregation is grateful for their historic past all the while excitedly reaching for their future.

Leigh Sewell promoted to CEO of MRMC Celebr ating 41 years! RICHMOND -- Leigh Sewell, senior vice president of strategic operations for Bon Secours Virginia, has been named CEO of Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital and Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing, effective Sept. 5. Sewell will work closely with her predecessor, Mark Gordon, to create a seamless transition. Gordon joined the Richmond health system in 2008 and is departing to pursue new opportunities. “I have worked with Leigh for many years, and she is a strong servant leader who is committed to our ministry,” said Toni R. Ardabell, CEO of Bon Secours Virginia Health System. “She has a passion for the highest quality of patient-centered care, along with the business acumen needed to lead these three distinct entities.” Since joining Bon Secours in 2006 Sewell has served in leadership roles in materials management, physician relations and medical staff office and as chief of staff to the CEO of Bon Secours Virginia. As senior vice president of strategic operations across Virginia, Sewell has been responsible for service line strategy, strategic communications, rehabilitation operations,

said. During the 18 to 24 months required to retool and renovate the plant, White Birch will lease the facility from Cascades and continue operating its former newsprint operation. “White Birch will lease the facility back from Cascades for the next 27 months as they feel — due to the regulatory climate — they can effectively print paper at a profit,” Thomas said. “That’s great for Hanover and Cascades, as the facility won’t sit idle and as it will immediately put people back to work and generate taxes for Hanover County. Cascades can generate income from the leaseback while their paper machines are being made which could take 18 to 24 months.”
LEIGH SEWELL behavioral health operations, the project management office and critical care transportation services. The 224-bed acute-care Memorial Regional Medical Center is one of the top 50 hospitals in the nation, now celebrating 20 years of serving the residents of Hanover and Henrico counties and Virginia’s Northern Neck. The 43-acre campus includes the Hanover Medical Park and the future home of the Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing, one of the area’s distinguished nursing schools with a rich tradition of student-centered education and achievement.
Thomas said many of those employees hired back by White Birch will hopefully transition to the new operation run by Cascades. “We remain optimistic that many of those rehired by White Birch will also be employed by Cascades upon completion of the project and start of their operations in Hanover. Simply based on the scope and size, the Cascades announcement represents big economic news for the county,” he added. “This is one of the largest economic development projects in Hanover County’s history, but, more importantly, it shows that major corporations — both nationally and internationally — see Hanover as a strategic destination for their operations,” Thomas said.
Richmond Community Hospital offers medical, surgical and behavioral health services in the City of Richmond. The 104-bed facility had 35,334 emergency room visits in 2017. The facility includes a medical office building and an outpatient infusion center, and celebrates over 100 years of service to the community. Bon Secours Sarah Garland Jones Center for Healthy Living is part of the hospital’s campus. “After nine years in corporate sector finance I felt called to make a difference in the health care industry after one of my daughters suffered a brain injury at birth,” said Sewell. “After more than a decade in various aspects of health care, I am honored to lead Richmond Community Hospital, Memorial Regional Medical Center and the College of Nursing, focusing on meeting the distinct needs of the communities each facility serves.” Sewell is active in the Richmond community, especially in advocating for those living with a disability. She has served on many community boards and is currently the chair of the 2018-2019 Go Red for Women campaign for the American Heart Association in Richmond. She holds a bachelor’s of business administration in finance from James Madison University and a master’s in health administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.
“This announcement will reverberate globally and force people to ask the question, ‘Why Hanover?’, which generates great exposure for us’.” That referenced announcement came from Gov. Ralph Northam’s office last week, when he revealed the sale and plans to renovate the dormant facility. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the Greater Richmond Partnership were instrumental in comprising an incentive package that worked for everyone concerned. “I think the citizens of Hanover would be very proud of the incentive package the Board of Supervisors approved as it was very fiscally responsible. Some states and localities look at 5- to 10-year return on investment models but we
made sure that any incentives provided we would get that return in approximately three years. Also, we made sure that the investments committed to by the company must be made in advance of any incentives which protects the county from a potential clawback of these funds, the Governor said. The county’s contribution to that incentive package includes a pledge to match state funds collected largely from rehabilitation tax credits. Hanover County worked with the Partnership, the Port of Virginia, the Greater Richmond Partnership and the General Assembly’s Employment and Investment Project to secure the project. Northam approved a

OPINION | The Local Views
‘The way things are’ make for a rude awakening By Laura McFarland Richmond Suburban News An hour before I wrote this column, I was crying for something I only just realized I have lost. Anyone who reads my column on a semi-regular basis knows that this writer is essentially an optimist. I have literally written about fluffy feelings I got while looking at fluffy clouds and not that long ago at that. Yes, I can see the negative implications of a situation or someone’s behavior, but there also are many times when perfidy and horrible behavior take me by surprise. That actually doesn’t worry me. I’ve always said I would be more worried to stop being surprised by the horrible things humans do to each other than the day when I just sit back and accept that this is the way things are now. Cynicism creeps up on you, or at least it did in my case. Looking back, I remember when my sister called me on the day of the June 28 shooting in the Capital Gazette newsroom. She wanted to make sure I was OK – not because I had ever been there or knew anyone at the newspaper, but because our profession was a shared connection. Of course, I was in shock. How could I not be? Never having been in that newsroom, my mind instead superimposed the images of the newsrooms where I had worked and the people alongside whom I had worked.
I thought of someone storming into those newsrooms and mowing those people down and I felt like someone had reached into my chest and was trying to wring all the blood out of it. And yet when my sister called and our conversation turned to “the way things are,” I found myself pointing out that there is no such thing anymore as ground too sacred to be touched by violence. In the last decade, what place we once visited without a care in the world hasn’t been touched by violence – schools, places of worship, clubs, stores, movie theaters, office buildings, restaurants, concerts, or homes. When something happens, we are shocked, and maybe even fearful, but life does eventually move on. If not, we would have to exist in a constant state of terror. I liken it to getting into a car even knowing that people die in car crashes every day. You can either do the best you can to drive safe and be mindful of those around you, or you can fret about every vehicle that approaches you being a potential weapon out to harm you and see how long your nerves last. All of this is to say that I have never felt like I was in a heightened state of fear outside of potentially dangerous situations. But then last week a group of friends and I attended a special movie screening event in North Carolina,

watching “Serenity,” an old favorite science fiction movie that has a loyal fan following. The screening was held at a dine-in theater with small walled sections dividing much of the seating into clusters. We chose a section near the back so as to avoid being overly disturbed by the movement of the wait staff. About 25 minutes into the movie, a man came into the theater and stood in the aisle not far from where we sat, leaning against one of the walled-off raised sections. He stood in the dark, wearing a trench coat, holding a backpack in one hand and with his other in his coat pocket. I don’t know how long he stood there because I know anxiety can make time feel like it is stretching out. I don’t know the timing but it was long enough for a wave of apprehension and disjointed thoughts to crash over the calm of my night out with friends. What was in that backpack? He could just be looking for someone, right? Why is he wearing a trench coat when the weather is in the 80s? If something starts to happen, do we have anything in our booth that could be used for protection? The exit is right there – could my friends and I make it? What about everyone else? This is crazy, nothing is going to happen. Don’t think about the 2012 shooting in a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight.” Nothing is going to happen. And yet as I watched him and the
sound of my heartbeat in my ears became louder than the action on the screen, these were the thoughts careening around in my head with all the grace of the little ball in a pinball machine. I am not saying they were rational thoughts, but then fear is rarely rational. Sometimes fear can be helpful, as with the heightened awareness of a woman walking to her car in a dark parking lot who suddenly realizes she is not as alone as she thought. And sometimes it can just be paralyzing. After what seemed like an eternity, the man eventually removed his coat and found an unoccupied chair in another section. No crisis, just an annoying latecomer to the theater. My heartbeat returned to normal. I chastised myself for being silly. Focus on the movie. Focus on having a good time with my friends. And, overall, I did have a wonderful time. It took about 24 hours for it all to sink in and for me to really process how I responded to the situation. And when I did, I cried – tears shed not because we were ever in any danger from that stranger in a darkened room. No, the tears came on the heels of the realization that, without my knowledge, my view of the world had gradually but forever altered by the reality of “the way things are.” Laura McFarland is news editor of Powhatan Today and Cumberland Today.

Wittman leads on timely budgets in Congress I want to recognize U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman, R-1, for continuing to act to get Washington, D.C., back in order when many are just talking about it. I find it regrettable that Congress continues to refuse to pass critical spending legislation before leaving for the August recess. Instead of waiting for a shutdown to do the right thing, Wittman has introduced the No Budget No Pay Act to permanently force members of Congress to give up their pay if there is a shutdown. He led the House of Representative in calling for Speaker Paul Ryan to follow the example of Senate and cancel the time off normally taken in August. The Congressman already has requested legislation requiring the same thing for the last four years. The House leadership must recognize the crisis that Wittman clearly sees and keeps the House in session if spending bills aren’t passed by August. He truly serves the people. Responsible service first before recreation. Ordinary citizens recognize that they must take care of business so too should the Congress! Elizabeth Bradford Beaverdam

been so wonderful and will continue to stay connected,” Rhodes said. JSRCC served more than 15,000 students last year and issued an equal amount of degrees and certificates in the last 10 years. Since 1972, more than 346,000 students have utilized its services. Last year, almost 2,000 Hanover citizens attended JSRCC, 217 of them high schoolers taking college courses. The Advanced College Academy enrolled more than 80 students from Hanover. Students who complete that program graduate with a high school diploma and an associates degree from JSRCC. Hanover County Public Schools partners with JSRCC on other programs like Fire/ EMS safety training and pharmacology tech classes and certification. Rhodes said workforce development is a major focus for the college and the goal is to triple the number of workforce credentials. “Our biggest problem is we don’t have enough trained people,” Rhodes said. On a personal note, Rhodes said he is especially proud of the amount of art collected and displayed on JSRCC’s walls since he began more than a decade and a half ago. Dr. Paula Pando will replace Rhodes as president on Sept. 1. “I can’t tell you how excited I am about President Paula Pando,” Rhodes said. “She’s so full of energy, and I told my board do not use the word replacement because we’re not looking for another Gary here.” Board chairman Sean Davis thanked Rhodes for his service and presented him with a proclamation. Lauranzon also was recognized with a proclamation for her eight years of service on the JSRCC board.

“I’m going to get a couple of videos” is a term that seems foreign to my children who grew up in an era where a trip to the video store was as unknown as references to eight-track tapes. But, those of us who lived it realize the video rental era was more than just the opportunity to obtain a popular movie and enjoy it in the comfort of your home. A trip to the video store was always more of a
aters plummeted as Americans chose to pop their own popcorn and watch movies at their own pace and with their own homespun style. Even with the unique and new environment of a busy outlet, the age of the video tape was doomed almost from the start, as a collection of more advanced delivery systems chased and finally caught the industry providing Americans
with one-touch ordering for movies or other entertainment. Many of the stores switched from cassette to CD in an effort to capture the changing market, but it was evident that the video tape was headed for the same fate as the Walkman. In an era when every open storefront seemed to beckon the opening of a new video store, it seemed impossible the trend was facing such an untimely demise. But, convenience prevailed and Americans clearly demonstrated a preference to sit at home and select movies from seemingly unending lists, minus the trip to the local video store. A clerk at one of the last Blockbusters said that many people placed trash in the video return window. But, there were still the loyal few who refused to surrender to the demands of advancing technology and continued to frequent the few remaining stores. And, now there’s one. The manager said her customer
base is confined to locals who live near the store, and most people stop at the store for a quick selfie, or a chance to experience one more small disappearing part of Americana that will be lost forever. Baby Boomers are a multigenerational group. They’ve seen things come and go before. Remember, there used to be cigarette lighters and ash trays in every car produced. Losing the last semblance of an age when family movie night encompassed a trip to the video store is not a major upset in our daily routines, but some lament the loss of any sign of a slower and less complicated time when passwords were not required. The rest of us salute the final Blockbuster and wish the surviving outlet a long and prosperous future. In reality, it’s more of a case of good riddance and a willingness to forget and bury a phrase that once seemed like everyday communication. “Be kind, please rewind,” no more.

riously hard to enforce and get good results on not only in Hanover but other localities.” One of the challenges involved in enforcement is that animal control officers are often not witnesses to the behavior. “They can’t tell how long the dog has been barking or how frequently,” Rives said. “Unfortunately, it’s up to the
people who are bothered to be the witnesses in these cases.” Rives said he could present options to the Community Development Committee, and Davis asked for that item to be placed on the agenda for the next committee meeting. When the old Circuit Court Building reopens next month in its new use housing many of the county’s financial services, the newly renovated facility will have a name. Supervisors voted unani-
mously to name the building the Chenault Weems Building. Lois Chenault served as the county’s Commissioner of the Revenue from 1974 to 1999, and George Weems was County Treasurer for almost 50 years. The building will house the Treasurer’s Office, Commissioner of the Revenue, and the Department of Finance and Management The renovated facility is scheduled to open next month.
required to finish the connector road, “He feels like he is going to have to close it for a segment of time,” Flagg added. Cars would be forced to turn around. “We think it would be for a approximately a period of a month,” Flagg said. “Our goal would certainly be to do it before school opens.” Flagg noted some of his concerns with the closure. “When you close Atlee Station Road, if people don’t pay attention to the messaging, all of a sudden they have to turn around.” The closure also would force the majority of motorists to make a left hand turn into the Rutland community and increase Craney Island traffic. “The good thing is that, in the summer months, we don’t
have near the flow of traffic we do during the school period,” Flagg said. The county will be coordinating efforts to inform the public and make necessary adjustments with school officials, the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office and the public information officer. “We are trying to minimize the impacts.” Flagg said the uncertainty of the schedule is another challenge regarding the closure. “The uncertainty make it even tougher,” he said. Kelly-Weicek asked for more information as soon as it is available so she can alert her constituents to the changes and possible closure. “As soon as you get something, you can let me know and I can reach out and make sure those residents get that information,” she said.

SERVPRO recognizes local business for Outstanding Revenue Performance Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND -- SERVPRO® of Hanover, Goochland and Caroline counties received the Chairman’s Bronze award at the recent SERVPRO convention, held June 25-29 at Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida. David E. Butler and Alexis Paige McDowell of SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland and Caroline and other highperforming franchisees were recognized during an Awards Extravaganza at the annual event, which was attended by nearly 3,000 owners, key staff, and corporate representatives. “We’re proud to have earned this distinction and proud to be a member of the SERVPRO franchise family serving home and business owners in the SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland and Caroline area,” Butler said. “When you combine a dedicated team of disaster remediation professionals with the innovative tools, business framework, and ongoing train-
ing provided by the SERVPRO Franchise Network, you have a winning formula for success. We look forward to providing world class disaster cleanup, restoration and remediation services to home and business owners in our community for many years to come.” Sue Steen, chief executive officer of Servpro Industries Inc., said that the Awards Extravaganza event was the highlight of a convention packed with learning opportunities. This year’s event theme, “Bring the Brand to Life”, represented the four main areas of focus that help add life to any brand: Serve the Customer, Build the Brand, Management, and Leadership. The theme was a thread running through the 70 breakout sessions and three general sessions available to the franchise owners and key team members in attendance. “In addition, these entrepreneurs learned about new internal technical enhancements designed to help them streamline their business operations,” added Steen. “Our goal each year is to
help our franchisees grow their businesses as they continue to provide best-in-class services to their clients.” “Running a small business is a challenge,” said Steen, “and SERVPRO understands that. Our annual convention gives us the opportunity to recognize our top performing franchises while we provide each of our individual franchisees with the tools, knowledge, and group experience they need to help them excel at building their businesses. Our business owners are an extraordinary group of entrepreneurs. When they succeed, it does more than enhance SERVPRO’s reputation as an industry leader in disaster cleanup, restoration, and remediation services. It also ensures that these dedicated professionals have the tools they need to provide worldclass service to their customers and their communities.” For more information about SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland and Caroline, contact Butler at 804-730-6788 or dbutler@servprohanover.com or visit www. OSWELL — Firefighters from communities across the commonwealth will hoist hoses, climb towers and carry mannequins to safety during the Firefighter Combat Challenge taking place Sept. 28 and 29 during the State Fair of Virginia at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County. The Firefighter Combat Challenge promotes and showcases the talents, skills and athleticism of America’s firefighters in an exciting and entertaining sports competition. It has been dubbed “The Competition with a Purpose” and seeks to encourage and reward firefighter fitness while demonstrating the profession’s rigors to the public. “We are so excited that the Firefighter Combat Challenge will be held during this year’s State Fair,” said Marlene Jolliffe, the fair’s executive director. “Many local county and city fire departments will participate, and the event is a great way to engage different communities who can come to the fair and cheer on their home teams.” The challenge simulates essential skills of firefighting, including climbing a tower in full bunker gear; dragging and hoisting fire hoses; simulating

forcible entry; and racing around obstacles. The competition begins at the base of a five-story tower with 63 steps. Competitors will move a 42-pound hose load and cover to the structure’s top. The forcible entry event utilizes a chopping simulator. Using a 9-pound shot mallet with both feet on a diamond plate surface, competitors must drive the sled—a 160-pound steel beam—a horizontal distance of 5 feet.

au-Prince, with a network of churches sending young people who are musically talented to a central location. They are not only evaluated on their singing and dancing abilities, but also on character and willingness to work diligently. Training begins in March in Haiti, with final rehearsals for three days after they arrive in the U. S. and before beginning the tour, which involves seven to eight concerts each week. The songs are in English, Creole, and French. Many are original material, with the goal of encouraging and inspiring the hearts of those who listen. Choir leaders also make a concerted
effort to develop leadership skills, confidence, and a passion for serving others during this experience, even at these young ages. The hope is that these children will make a positive impact on their world in Haiti, and that each one will gain a vision for how God can use him/her in the future. There is no fee, but an offering will be taken to help with the choir costs as well as fund projects in Haiti. CDs and other items also will be sold. ECHANICSVILLE -“Amazing”, “so inspiring”, “what beautiful children”, “what beautiful voices”, “they sure are energetic!” These are the comments heard after most every concert by the Hope Haitian Choir. The choir will perform at 7 p.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 1) at the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church at 7356 Atlee Rd. in Mechanicsville. The non-traditional choir, made up of 15 young people, ranging in age from 7 to 17, is touring the Eastern U.S. this summer, sharing their joy in a variety of venues and churches. The Choir began six years ago, with a new group of children coming each summer. Their exceptional voices combined with energized dancing effectively communicate a message of hope. Though many of these young people come from very difficult circumstances in their home country of Haiti, they demonstrate a buoyant spirit that finds its source in their genuine faith. Under the direction of Barb House of Boothbay, Maine, the choir has sung at Christian conventions in Haiti, on radio and television stations, at the Rotunda in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., at the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey, and a variety of both indoor and outside venues. Auditions are held each fall in Port-

Burkwood swamps competition in Champs By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – Last year, Burkwood won the Greater Richmond Aquatic League’s Champs meet by nearly 300 points. This year, the Buccaneers outdid themselves, extending their winning margin to more than 350 with a 1,151.5798 swamping of second-place Canterbury by the end of the two-day meet, which wrapped up Sunday at SwimRVA. In a meet where participation was down overall because of conflicts with year-round events and family vacations – about 50 fewer swimmers competed in Champs than in previous years – Burkwood’s swimmers showed up, both in terms of numbers and in terms of performance. Every Buccaneer came away with a trophy and most dropped times. “We had probably 90 percent, we figured, dropped [times] over the weekend,” said Burkwood head coach Karen Seeber. “The time drops were phenomenal. We were so excited.” She credited her coaching staff – Emily Beaudin, Austin and Brendan Farrar, Beanie Kiss and Madeline White – with keeping her swimmers enthusiastic and prepared for the meet. “It’s one of the best coaching staffs that we’ve had in a long time,” Seeber said. “They’ve just

really done a phenomenal job, and they’ve really come together as a family.” Brendan Farrar said the family feeling extended down through the swimmers, too. “They really wanted to come help out, help the team win again,” he said. “It was like the energy carried over from last year to this year.” Burkwood wasn’t the only Hanover County team with a lot of energy. Three other county teams finished in the top 10: Atlee, fourth with 594 points, Kings Charter, seventh with 404.5; and Hanover Country Club with 385. Atlee head coach Jennifer Vieni was overjoyed at her team’s performance. “We wanted our swimmers to come in and give it their best shot and work hard and have fun. That’s exactly what they did,” she said. “Everyone came in to race. Almost every single person dropped time every single event, from the 8-and-unders all the way up to our 18-year-olds. Debres, Shumate pitch Post 175 to Legion title By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Orion Debres, a rising senior at Class 2 King William County, just pitched the game of his life. One of three Cavaliers who made the Mechanicsville Post 175 squad, Debres has established himself as a solid reliever. He was called to the mound in the sixth inning of the Americal Legion District 11 championship game against South Richmond Thursday night with both the game and the season on the line. Trailing 3-2 at the top of the sixth inning, Debres needed to give his team a chance to win. He held South Richmond scoreless, while his teammates responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead and he defended the lead in the seventh to get the 4-3 win and secure for Mechanicsville both the District 11 title as well as a berth in the Virginia state tournament, which begins Monday at James Wood High School in Winchester. “It is definitely by far the biggest game I’ve ever pitched in my life,” Debres said. He said the level of competition he has faced in the Legion season is stronger than what he usually faces against the Class 1 and 2 teams of the Tidewater Distrct that he faces at King William. “I love baseball. As long as I get to play, it’s fun, but I feel like this is more competition than I’m used to,” Debres said. “People from bigger areas, a lot of the better kids from the big areas. I just enjoy getting to play better teams and having fun with my teammates.” Post 137 wasn’t making it easy for Debres. He faced three baserunners – one on a hit, one hit by a pitch, and one on a fielder’s choice – but he made a

mate, Travis Shumate, gave Post 175 a solid start, though a wobbly third inning led to a 3-0 South Richmond lead.
But Mechanicsville responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, and Shumate settled down and went two more innings. After five complete, Shumate had given up just five hits and three runs, with two strikeouts and a lot of solid defense behind him. The two Cavaliers outdueled Grant Squyars, who came in in relief in the first inning, but who gave up all four Post 175 runs. Austin Odell got Mechanicsville’s rally started, opening the bottom of the third with a walk. Brian Sisson followed with an RBI double. He advanced to third on a Zach Lass single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Camden Grimes. Post 175 got its go-ahead runs in the sixth inning. With one out, Zack Beach walked, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a J.T. Fitzpatrick double to tie the game. Fitzpatrick reached third on a passed ball, then scored one out later on a Hunter Beck single. Post 137 manager Jack Horner said it was hard to keep Mechanicsville down. “They’ve got a good team. You can’t go undefeated in the regular season and not be a good team, so we figured we’d have to throw two or three guys at them,” Horner said. “My pitchers did what I thought they might do. We just didn’t get quite enough runs.” For Post 175 manager Brandon Powers, the victory was a relief – especially as there were to be no do-overs. “It’s nice being on that side advancing,” said Post 175 manager Brandon Powers. “At some point the season is going to end. We saw their best and we expected to. It’s a fun game to be in.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
Ruthian effort brings Rockville to World Series – according to Johnson – good old-fashioned hard work put in through practice and game play by his team. “They swept the district tournament, hosted the state tournament, did the same thing, went to regionals and almost did the same thing,” Johnson noted. “The quality of play from the district tournament, which was just a few weeks ago, to now, is just unbelievable how much better these kids get.” The Rockville 9U Baseball All-Stars will begin play at Pineapple Park in Treasure Coast, Florida, on Tuesday. Johnson also noted the heroes on the other side of the chain link fences, parents and
By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ROCKVILLE – Where Rockville Elementary School once proudly stood, young baseball players now patrol the outfield. Across the way, softball players steadfastly work on defensive drills and hitting the cut-off player. It looks like another typical practice evening for the Rockville All-Stars. But Thursday night’s gathering was more than a little different. Parents were making last minute travel plans with one eye, watching practice with another, hoping there’d be no last minute injuries. Kona Ice stopped by to provide players with a treat to beat the heat. All the while, the stars of the show probably didn’t truly realize what was about to happen. The caravan of players and supporters from Rockville, Virginia, to Treasure Coast, Florida, began to roll early on Friday as the Softball 12U AllStars headed south to make history, becoming the first representative from this closelyknit community to reach the Babe Ruth World Series. Years of effort from so many players which had proceeded this team paved the way for this opportunity, one appreciated by their head coach. “It speaks in big volumes,” softball head coach Keith Winder said when asked about the rich history of Rockville’s program this decade, a history that, until this year, was missing just one piece. “Ten of my 12 players all play travel ball but they all come back and play for their local league. They want to play with their friends, relax, and have fun.” This group has knocked on the door several times, but finally, with a 9-5 victory over Shenandoah to win the Virginia
volunteers who raised funds, offered support, and did everything needed to ensure the team could take the field and focus on their task. Right on cue, as Johnson’s team ended another night of practicing, there were parents in the complex parking lot loading case after case of drinks for the players into a trailer. It’s all part of a labor of love, from a special community to two special groups of young women and men who will proudly wear the name “Rockville” on the front of their jerseys 843 miles away from home. state title, Winder’s group was headed to Florida. “I’ve coached All-Stars four times, and we’ve been close,” Winder explained. “They didn’t react the way I thought they would at first, because I was ready to have a pile on the field, and when they saw me run they realized, oh wow, we just won the state championship. They were ecstatic.” The tradition built by several state titles over the past eight years has helped ready this group of Rockville players, many of whom have played
together for the past six seasons, to compete at their sport’s highest level. The team concludes pool play today, and hopes to begin their quest for a World Series Championship Thursday. For Rockville’s 9U Baseball head coach Afton Johnson, preparation for his team’s trip to Florida presents a “full-circle” moment for him. A Rockville native, he remembers when the sports complex was home to his elementary school. “I can probably guarantee that I might be a little tearyeyed,” Johnson said when asked
to think about watching his team take the field beginning Aug. 6 at the Cal Ripken World Series. “I grew up playing baseball, I grew up here, so it is near and dear to my heart to see it happen. It’ll be something special.” For his group of boys and a girl, the opportunity to advance to the World Series came via invitation, which is commonplace at their level of Babe Ruth competition. Advancing to the Southeast Region championship game helped seal the deal. That run was made possible by

Request(s) to rezone from A-1, Agricultural District, and B-3, General Business District, to MX(c), Mixed Use District with conditions, on GPINs 7767-17-2423, 7767-08-0569, 7757-98-4106, 7757-96-1157, 7757-96-5577 and 7757-86-7936, consisting of approximately 323.29 acres, and located on the east line of Mountain Road (U.S. Route 33) at the Henrico County Line in the SOUTH ANNAMAGISTERIALDISTRICT.The subject property is designated on the General Land Use Plan Map as Commercial and Planned Business.
