RICHMOND – The Town of Ashland and Hanover County are being represented in the Class of 2019 of Leadership Metro Richmond (LMR). Josh Farrar, Ashland town manager, and David Maloney, director of the county’s Planning Department, are among the community leaders selected from throughout the region FARRAR to participate in LMR’s flagship program, Leadership Quest. This diverse group of 70 participants will engage in the 10-month program, starting in September, that focuses on regional issue topics and community leadership development. MALONEY

The Black Creek Civic Association and Travellers Run joined with other communities throughout Mechanicsville and Hanover County in observing National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 7. In the photo above, Black Creek Estates residents welcomed Scott Wyatt, at the right in the back, the Cold Harbor District supervisor, to their event. Below, about 100 Travellers Run residents enjoyed catered food, ice cream, music and donations from local retail stores and restaurants. HANOVER -- Hanover County Board of Supervisors chairman Sean Davis recently told fellow board members he had received a number of calls from the “recovery community” offering support for the Healing Place, an in-house recovery program sponsored by CARITAS. “CARITAS is an umbrella organization that has four programs,” said executive director Karen Stanley. Those services include the Healing Place and an emergency shelter accessed by local church congregations. The organization STANLEY also operates a furniture bank and an employment program that assists people with significant barriers to employment. Founded in the early 1980s, CARITAS began the Healing Place for men in 2005 “to solve a gap we had in our homeless services system.” Stanley said more than 10,000 men have been helped by that program since it opened its doors more than a decade ago.
