U.S. News & World Report Lake District project in U.S. 33 area would be the biggest in Hanover County’s economic history honors MRMC

Planners defer action on major development By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local

GEIGER

HANOVER -- A rumble surrounding a proposed mixed-use project located near U.S. 33 turned into a roar at a Hanover County Planning Commission meeting last week. Planning Commissioners voted on Thursday, Aug. 16, to defer action for 60 days on the biggest development in Hanover County’s economic history, allowing officials

more time to gather further data regarding the impact on a rezoning application by Marchetti Properties, Jeffrey Geiger, an attorney representing Boyd Homes, said the Lake District at Glen Allen development is a well-timed, uniquelydesigned community that perfectly fits the more than 330 acres located off U.S. 33 near the Henrico County line in western Hanover. The subject property is currently zoned for commercial or business use and is located

within the Suburban Service Area (SSA). Per current county regulations, a mixeduse project in the SSA could contain up to 15 units per acre. Geiger pointed out the Lake District project’s density is less than eight units per acre. In addition, Lake District developers have agreed to complete the commercial element portion of the project and the residential units at the same time. see PLANNERS, pg. 4

MECHANICSVILLE -- Hanover County has been no stranger to the modern controversy surrounding the usage of Civil War relics that has swept the country in the wake of the devastating massacre at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015 where nine African-American parishioners were gunned down. Early this year, the names and mascots of two area schools named after leaders of the Confederate states garnered national attention. Once a community that seemed insulated from the debate over race relations and relics of the past, Mechanicsville recently became immersed in a meaningful discussion over the THOMPSON potential of renaming Lee-Davis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School. The call for change caused over 10,000 area residents to respond overwhelmingly to keeping the school names as they are. Rev. Buddy Thompson, a graduate of LeeDavis High School and senior pastor of Life

Church in Mechanicsville said, “One of the most important takeaways that residents of our community can learn from the recent school name discussion is that we have ignored some very important issues surrounding our history for a long time. Instead of taking a defensive posture and attacking one another, we should proactively engage those from all perspectives and ethnicities.” “As a white pastor, of a multicultural, but still predominantly white congregation, I have a responsibility to God and my neighbor to be a healing agent,” Rev. Thompson added. Life Church, under the leader of Rev. Thompson, has grown from a handful of members to a thriving multi-ethnic congregation where over 500 gather weekly to worship. The church’s annual block party and school supply giveaway at eastern Henrico County’s St. Luke’s Apartments caught the eye of an area pastor, Rev. Joe Ellison. In addition to serving as senior pastor of City Park Church, Rev. Ellison also is the chaplain for the Virginia Union University football team. Reverends Ellison and Thompson found that they both share a passion for dialogue that can lead to racial reconciliation in the Greater Richmond area. “For too long, the American church has tried to sweep racial tensions under the rug in see VUU, pg. 4

Geiger said the up to 2,800 residential units outlined in the proposal are designed to accommodate the growing demands of both millenials and Igeneration residents, but also would appeal to Baby Boomers or “empty nesters” who seek maintenance-free lifestyles. “When deciding where to

live, they are looking for the same thing: lifestyles where they can live, work and play and shop,” Geiger said. “They want compact, low-maintenance living.” Designed around a 15-acre lake, the community will feature bike and walking trails, shopping areas and several types of residential options. OPINION | The Local Views

It’s amazing how some instilled actions resurface By Melody Kinser Managing Editor couple of weeks ago I was traveling on Pole Green Road when I noticed a funeral procession being led by a vehicle with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office on the other side of the highway. Instinctively, I immediately slowed to a crawl, mindful of the traffic on my side. And then I realized that, after 13 years of making my home in Virginia, I had reverted to a West Virginia driver’s reaction to seeing a funeral procession.

A

It was common practice to slow down or even stop as the procession passed. This was an acknowledgement of respect for the deceased and the family. After the procession passed, which, by the way, included two more HCSO vehicles (thank you, Col. David R. Hines), I proceeded home. A smile crossed my face when the cartoon type light bulb went off over my head as I thought about what had just happened. There was no flash of “I must slow down” or “Oh, there’s a funeral procession.” As a driver, I went into turtle mode. Slow. Slow. Slow.

And, I will note that there wasn’t any traffic around me at the time. I believe that was a first since I started calling the Commonwealth home in 2005. I’m glad some instilled habits rise to the surface without any in-depth thinking being involved. Without question, being respectful is an act that we can’t do too often. Taking a moment as a motorist to honor someone on that final ride merits our attention. My paternal grandmother passed away

when I was 12, and I still remember the line of vehicles traveling Interstate 64 in the Huntington, West Virginia, area to the cemetery. There were law enforcement officers (I don’t remember from which jurisdiction) accompanying us. There’s a feeling of nostalgia and satisfaction at what really was a simple act, but one that was so full of respect and honor. At this stage of life, it’s good to know that acts taught to us many years ago find a way back to us.

The election that pitted two Rons against each other By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It’s not what you think. The title may indicate an intriguing tale of a powerful family run by a mob boss who kills his brother. But, no, this story is about two guys who are named Ron. Now, in a time with Russian interference, political investigations and mud-slinging exchanges that would embarrass a well-healed razorback, maybe a little more confusion is just what we don’t need. That’s why I rarely address political issues in my column, and this

one is no exception although it does border on that universe. I assure you we’re not close enough to get hit by any splatter. While ignoring the political news the other day, I happened across the story of two guys with the same name running for the same seat in a Kansas Republican primary this week. Ron Estes is the current representative for the district, and Ron Estes is seeking to unseat the legislator recently elected in a special election to fill a vacated seat. One of the first things Estes, or Rep. Estes as he likes to be called, said was voter confusion could be a prob-

lem. Seriously?! And the state also recognizes the potential for a debacle so the ballot will pit Rep. Ron Estes against Ron M. Estes. Rep Estes claims Ron M. Estes is backed by Democrats and the M stands for misleading. The latter Estes replied that the M actually stood for “Merica”. Tuesday night, all the talk stopped and voters went to the polls to decide, well, which Estes was the bestest. One thing they all knew for sure that an Estes would be running against the Democrat in November. Now, I didn’t have a dog in this

fight, speaking in Texas lingo, and I bet you didn’t either. But, it is puzzling that in a country of more than 340 million folks, we can’t find two candidates that at least have different names. In the Kansas case the old adage hurled at politicians “you guys are all the same” really hits close to home in this case. But the confusion didn’t stop Rep. Ron Estes from winning a lopsided primary against the man he called a “fake.” When voters were asked if the name similarity caused confusion, some said they had to double-check their ballot to make sure they had

voted for the correct Estes. Rep. Estes originally won his seat to Congress in a special election for a seat vacated by Mike Pompeo, who currently serves as President Trump’s Secretary of State. By winning the primary, Estes gains the right to run again in November against James Thompson, the man he defeated for the seat in a special election last year. I’ve heard politics produces strange bedfellows, but having the same name seems like a bridge too far. Distinguishing one candidate from another, in some cases, is becoming more difficult in middle America, and expecting voters to decipher which Ron Estes is which seems burdensome. One voter who exited the polls did not agree. “If they couldn’t tell the difference then they shouldn’t be voting.” That’s probably good advice but I would caution against offering it to one candidate named Ron M. Estes. Bottom line is most of us have had our fill of politics and need a short break from the insanity. Summer seemed like the perfect time for that respite. Unfortunately, the 24-hour cable news cycle is not getting the message.

Ride requests can be scheduled with as little as 48 hours’ notice. Trish FitzPatrick, UZURV’s vice president of Corporate Outreach, said, “UZURV is pleased to partner with Senior Connections in this pilot. Our mission, to provide access to a better quality of life for all people through on-demand, reliable transportation, is perfectly suited for this project. We look forward to serving seniors in Hanover County.” The initial financial support of this pilot comes from funding provided by Senior Connections and community partners. Senior Connections acts as the Regional Transportation Coordination Entity for Specialized Transportation in the Greater Richmond Area. “Senior Connections is excited to support this project

which will help us determine the needs of older residents in Hanover. With the current funding available we are projecting to offer approximately 600 rides,” noted Thelma Watson, executive director of Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging. Since 2013, the nonprofit, Hanover Senior Rides volunteer driver program has been providing no cost transportation for older adults to medical and other non-medical appointments. Appointments must be scheduled seven or more days in advance. Hanover Senior Rides serves more than 100 seniors in the Mechanicsville and Ashland areas. Volunteer drivers, donations and grants make the program possible. Paul Cash appointed interim principal at PHHS ASHLAND -- A retired Navy fighter pilot has agreed to fill a vital role as interim principal at Patrick Henry High School after the former principal was dismissed two weeks ago. Michael Gill, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, made the announcement at last week’s Hanover County School Board meeting, and indicated his full confidence that former administrator Paul Cash is the right candidate as the school prepares for its third principal in as many years. “We are thankful to have an administrator with the caliber of Mr. Cash ready, willing and able to step in to the interim principal’s position,” Gill said. “Patrick Henry will open on Sept. 4 and will be ready for the school year, and we’ll have an outstanding year.” Cash formerly served as an administrator at Patrick Henry and in the Central Office for 14 years. Prior to his career in education, Cash was a Navy pilot who logged more than 5,300 flight hours during his 27 years of service. “We are happy to have Mr. Cash returning back to Hanover County in this interim principal capacity,” Gill said as he introduced the new Patrick Henry administrator. “I am honored to be going back to Patrick Henry. I’ve got a good group of folks and I’m looking forward to moving forward and making sure we have a good successful start of the school year . . . keeping in mind that the students are the most important thing we do,” Cash said following the meeting. “I’ve already got the great support of the staff here and we’ll make it work.”

“We feel that’s important in this unusual situation,” Gill said. “We want to make sure that we take the time to get it right.” Chairman Bob Hundley, Chickahominy Districtk, echoed those sentiments, and reflected on recent decisions by the school board to make a change at Patrick Henry. “This has been a difficult process for everyone involved,” he said. “We understand our inability to share specific details has caused a lot of speculation, misinformation and frustration in the community, which is regrettable.” One parent expressed those very concerns regarding transparency and communication during a public comment period. “You all held a closed door meeting on our principal without asking any input from the community,” Darrell Warner said. “We should have been informed as to what was going on and what the procedures were. I feel like the community should have been more involved . . . even if it was just an after thought.” In other matters, assistant superintendent Terry Stone briefed school board members on information provided to the Hanover County Planning Department regarding a proposed mixed-use project off Mountain Road called the Lake District. When new subdivisions are planned or proposed, Planning Director David Maloney gathers input from various county agencies outlining the potential impacts of the project on departments like Hanover County Fire/EMS, the schools and the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. First agri-community sells 21 homes in one day Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com

ECHANICSVILLE -Chickahominy Falls, Greater Richmond’s first 55+ agricommunity, held its Founders’ Day drawing on July 12. Because there were so many interested buyers and few opening home sites initially for sale, a drawing was required. This was the first opportunity for prospective buyers to purchase in the opening phase of Chickahominy Falls and 21 lucky buyers became the Founding Homeowners at Chickahominy Falls. “The response to Chickahominy Falls has been overwhelmingly positive since day one,” said Roger Glover, principal in The Crescent Group (TCD), developer of Chickahominy Falls. “Our vision of healthy living in a farm-inspired community with opportunities for work and play has really struck a chord with 55+ homebuyers. People are ready for more than the typical amenity package, and ready to join us in pioneering a new kind of active adult community. I don’t know if 21 sales in one hour, is a record in Richmond, but it certainly proves our region is yearning for what we providing at Chickahominy

The Barn is the first signature amenity at Chickahominy Falls. Upon completion, it will overlook Woodside Farms, the 10-acre working farm at the heart of the community. Agriburbia of Colorado,

has been instrumental in the design and development of the neighborhood farm concept and infrastructure. They have installed high-tech drip irrigation systems, a hoop house for seed germination and sewed

the first crop to include – a variety of kale, wild flowers, spinach, collards, squash and daisies. Currently in framing, the Barn is being constructed by Geo-barns of Vermont and will serve as both a working barn and social center for the community, complete with professional demonstration kitchen and entertainment areas inside and out. The Crescent Group celebrated the Barn Raising on July 26 with a special event hosted at Chickahominy Falls. The event was an opportunity for The Crescent Group to thank its development and construction teams, along with key supporters. Located in Hanover County, about 20 minutes from downtown Richmond, Chickahominy Falls is situated on 180 acres abutting Cedar Lane, Holly Hill Road, and the Chickahominy River. It

is the first and only “AgriCommunity” in the Greater Richmond area blending agequalified residences, amenities, orchards and a working farm. Over 73 of the community’s 180 acres will be dedicated to the farm and orchards, Farm House and Farmer’s Market and outdoor open gathering spaces for harvest socials and other community gatherings. Anchoring the recreation, health and wellness amenities will be a clubhouse, fitness center, pool, and an elaborate network of walking trails and exercise stations that will wind throughout the community alongside mature trees, gardens, open spaces, a neighborhood pond, and the Chickahominy River. Citizens arrived at the meeting prepared to present a myriad of complaints regarding the project that many view as a massive change for the area that has not received the public attention it deserves. Opposing groups have pointed to a lack of transparency regarding the proposal, but the application presented at last week’s meeting outlined a detailed plan that included residential units, commercial and retail space, and recreational opportunities all located MALONE in a walk-able mixed-use community. During the public hearing, an almost equal number of supporters and opponents took turns at the podium. “I feel like you all really need to look at this hard and pass this,” said South Anna resident Russ Malone. “Instead of packing 20 different developers coming to this little piece of land, you are able to coordinate the whole thing so you don’t end up like we did on Route 360,” he added. Malone pointed to infrastructure already in place that would accommodate the project.

“We’ve already put out a tremendous amount of money as a taxpayer by putting the water and sewer in,” he said, noting a $12 million pump station “that is not being used.” Malone noted the type of units planned do not attract a great number of new students. A projected impact study comprised by school officials estimated an increase of about 1,500 students when the development reaches full build-out. Planning Director David Maloney said those estimates could represent a “worst-case scenario,” and said more study is needed in that area. “I don’t think it will impact schools at all,” Malone said. Jack Nuttecombe grew up near Montpelier, and said the new project would allow residents of that area to access shopping and also would attract young people to the county. “This area would bring great economic investment not only to Hanover County, NUTTECOMBE but especially to the Montpelier and Elmont area,” Nuttecombe said. But other residents said those impacts are, as yet, unknown and urged commissioners to delay

Goodman ranks 10th in the world Traffic alert issued Rising senior at Atlee High School competes in the 2018 CrossFit Games Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE – A rising senior at Atlee High School recently competed on a world stage at the 2018 CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin. Caleb Goodman, of Mechanicsville, took part in the CrossFit Games, which are considered the world’s premier test to find the Fittest on Earth™. They are worldrenowned as a grueling test for the toughest athletes on Earth, as well as a thrilling experience for spectators. The CrossFit Games events are made up of a broad range of functional movements. Functional movements move large loads, long distances, quickly. These movements also form the basis of our exercise program. The CrossFit Games are designed to test, not train, fitness. The goal is to find the fittest athletes, not to produce an easily replicable workout program. The Crossfit Games season is broken up into three stages. The first stage is the Open in which 415,000 individuals competed. This five-week, fiveworkout competition is held in the winter in CrossFit affiliates and garage gyms around the world. Workouts are released online each Thursday, and athletes have until the following Monday to submit their scores. Anyone who’s at least 14 years old can sign up and join in the first stage of the CrossFit Games season. The top 200 teenagers and masters athletes in each age

group division then went on to complete online age group qualifier workouts in their home gym. These workouts had to be videotaped and independently judged and submitted for scoring. The top 20 teens in each age group were invited to compete in the Crossfit Games. Goodman was ranked 15th in the world after that stage at the end of May. The CrossFit Games were held Aug. 1-5, with Caleb competing against other 16- and 17-year-old boys from nearly every continent on the globe in 11 distinct events that include a military style obstacle course, handstand walks, Olympic and powerlifting, open water swimming, climbing 15’ ropes

and generally moving fast under load. In the end, Goodmanfought to 10th place in the world. “The most exciting part was running out onto the competition floor from the corrals. As you were running you could hear the crowd scream and you knew you were going to put on a good performance,” Caleb said, describing the excitement of the event Rachel Krumm, the owner of SoGo Crossfit in Ashland, has been Goodman’s coach for 18 months. “Caleb was inspiring to watch,” she said. “The workouts and the other young men pushed him out of his comfort zone and he shined through, we are really proud of him.”

Caleb Goodman, shown with his coach, Rachel Krumm, and performing ring muscleups, ranked 10th in the world in the recent CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin.

“The CrossFit Games embodies the competitive nature of the human spirit. I believe it represents what we all can achieve if we put our best foot forward every day, even when we don’t necessarily feel like it. Seeing these men and women push themselves to extraordinary measures is amazing, and inspiring. Not just in competition, but in our everyday lives,” Krumm added. SoGo CrossFit is located in the Hanover Airpark at 11012 Richardson Rd., and caters not only to athletes like Goodman, but those of all ages who simply want to improve their fitness and overall health. see GOODMAN, pg. 17

Community Services seeks nominations for Jean C. Harris Award for Excellence HANOVER -- The Hanover County Community Services Board has announced that the nomination period for the Jean C. Harris Award for Excellence is now open. The nomination form and further information can be found at: https:// www.hanovercounty.gov/675/Jean-CHarris-Award. Nominations are due by Thursday, Sept. 13. In 2000, the Hanover County Community Services Board established an annual award in the name of longtime board member, community volunteer and advocate, Jean C. Harris. The Jean C. Harris Award for Excellence has been given annually to Hanover-based individuals, families or groups that demonstrate outstanding contribution in the areas of intellectual/ developmental disabilities, mental health, and/or substance use. Acknowledging that many individu-

als, families and groups in Hanover are making a difference in these areas, up to three awards will be given this year. Nominations for those contributing in these areas in a professional capacity will be considered with clear demonstration that their service goes above and beyond their professional duty. Who was Jean C. Harris and why do these awards bear her name? Jean Harris is a shining example of a person of compassion who directed her time and energy to helping those in need in Hanover County. She made a difference every day. A native of Hanover whose father ran a country store, Harris worked as a secretary to a judge, was married to a local bank executive, and raised three children. She was a tireless advocate for those without a voice. She noticed those in need and tried to help in big and small ways. She was feisty and persistent and was a founding member of the Hanover

County Community Services Board. With her first appointment in 1977, she served for nearly 20 years, including as chairman five times. Throughout her service, she focused on promoting the development of much needed communitybased services and supports in Hanover County and has left a lasting legacy. Members of the community are encouraged to consider nominating those whose work today follows in Harris’ footsteps of advocacy and care for those in need in Hanover County. The challenges are great and their work is invaluable. The awards will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at a reception in the Parish Hall of St. Paul’s Church at Hanover Courthouse where Harris served as treasurer and outreach hairman for many years. important that the board see the study and was aware of the possible impacts, due to its scope, on Hanover schools if this project is approved. “What’s different tonight is that this is a rather significant development so we’re sharing this with you for informational purposes,” Stone said. She said the greatest impact of the 330-plus acre development and the 2,820 residential units planned and located close to the Henrico County line off U.S. 33 would be felt at Elmont Elementary. Using standard county student projection estimates (.536 children per unit), the development could more than dou-

ble the current enrollment at that campus when the project reaches full completion. Effects also would impact Patrick Henry High School and Liberty Middle School. The total number of additional students projected if the development is approved is more than 1,500. Stone said the proposed development is somewhat remote in relation to other county schools, thereby limiting options like redistricting to address increased enrollments. Maloney noted that total build-out on the project is expected to take 10 to 15 years, and residential occupancies would be phased over that period, lessening the immediate impact.

action on the recommendation. “I’m not opposed to this development but I do have concerns,” said South Anna resident Janet Binns. “There are going to be impacts to our schools. There are going to be impacts to Fire and EMS services. I want it right for South Anna, but, more importantly, I want it right for Hanover BINNS County,” she added as she asked commissioners to defer the decision. Martha Wingfield went further in her opposing comments. “If we want to make smart choices, the best way is through inclusive and transparent public process,” she said. “I say that we have seen enough to know this development is not appropriate for Hanover County and it’s not appropriate for this part of

“One of the advantages of the proffers that have been submitted is that these impacts are certainly not going to be felt immediately and there will be adequate time for county government and the schools to prepare if this project is approved,” Maloney said. He told school board members that his department has employed the services of a consultant to assist in gauging impact from the project, and indicated the Planning Commission would defer the matter when considered at its Aug. 16 meeting. the SSA. I ask that you vote no tonight on this,” Wingfield said, suggesting a new process begin that includes more public recommendation and input. “A developer from Virginia Beach does not know what we want,” WINGFIELD Wingfield said. “We, the citizens of the county, are the experts in what we want and it’s our voice that should be heard first.” The Hanover County Board of Supervisors will deliver the ultimate decision on the project once the commission has made its recommendation. After unanimously deferring the matter for 60 days, commissioners began planning a public work session to gather more input. Time and date of that session have not been announced. Maloney said the consultant study could take six to eight weeks. Following completion of the study, the application returns to the commission for another public hearing and vote, possibly in October.

John Axselle said the numbers indicated the need for a new school if the project is approved. “We are going to need a new elementary school at a minimum,” Axselle said. “ Stone said those decisions had not been reached and additions to current schools or redistricting could supply relief to the overcrowding. “We know that this certainly needs to be on our radar,” Stone said. “As we look at projections going forward, should this be approved, we need to start planning for this specific development.”

Field hockey teams look to resume success By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local RICHMOND – It’s a new era at Atlee, while Hanover and Patrick Henry look to improve on 2017 playoff appearances while Lee-Davis looks to return to past glory as the 2018 high school field hockey season dawns this week. Four teams, four dreams, four hopes for lots of November play. At Atlee, Heather Hodges replaces longtime head coach Alyssa Farling. Hodges has extensive coaching experience, including with former Conference 16 rival Albemarle, The Covenant School, and Towson University. She’ll look to guide her Raiders to a better start than last season, where early injuries and a tough schedule placed Atlee behind the eight ball, losing four of their first five matches, before turning things around for an eleven-win season that left them a win shy of the Class 5 state tournament. Senior leadership will come from goalkeeper Campbell Whyte, defender Maddie Radolinski, and midfielder Reaghan Kolb, who is joined in the middle by junior Ari Wheeler and sophomore Ashley Karn. “Our team is full of athletes, but they’re craving some more technical instruction,” Hodges noted before a scrimmage

Wednesday. Raider fans should mark their calendars for Sept. 5 when the team which ended their season, Deep Run, comes to Atlee in an early Region 5B showdown. Lee-Davis, a region power earlier in the decade which included a trip to the Class 5 state tournament, wants to return to impact Region 5B this year. Seniors Casey Carnohan, Olivia Doss and Emma Sweeney will lead the Confederates, who also return talented juniors midfielder Brynn Gibson and goalkeeper Gracie Pappas, plus sophomores Chloe Ulm, Lilly Lutton and Ella Warren. Head Coach Merridee Gibson welcomes newcomers Carsyn Poppa, juniors Harlie Talman and Sidney Owens, and freshmen Paige Moore and Tori Novak. Lee-Davis opens on the road at Glen Allen Wednesday, then hosts Patrick Henry on Monday. The Patriots, who advanced to the Class 4, Region C semifinals a year ago, are gearing up for what they hope will be a third straight season with at least one playoff victory. Head coach Abbie Rossman notes it will be her team’s defense that anchors their efforts early Rob Witham for The Local in the season, which features Atlee sophomore Kate Miller (right) goes on the attack in a scrimmage with visiting St. Anne’s-Belfield Wednesday. an unusual scheduling quirk against St. Anne’s-Belfield. “So, that instruction that will help Lacrosse goalkeeper Stella while Taylor Bates returns at which puts Patrick Henry on I’m excited to help them on them take the program a little Harrison, now a sophomore, attack. Atlee travels to trathe technical side, give them further.” joins the offense at forward, ditional power Gloucester see SUCCESS, pg. 27

PH’s Rathbone, Hanover win in match

Atlee QB Warren commits to Hokies By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch Atlee junior quarterback Tyler Warren has committed to Virginia Tech, his coach said Friday. A 6-foot-5, 215-pound lefty, Warren threw for 891 yards in nine games last year. He completed 79 of 166 passes for 7 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He also rushed for 80 yards per game. He also had offers from Syracuse and Virginia. Because of his size and athleticism, some colleges liked him better at other positions. While Virginia Tech and Syracuse offered him as a quarterback, Virginia offered him as a tight end or defensive player, Warren said.

Daniel Sangjib Min/Times-Dispatch

Atlee’s Tyler Warren scrambles during a game against Deep Run on Aug. 20, 2017.

Ultimately, Warren said he would pick the school that he liked the most regardless of the position he was recruited to play. He’s a three-sport star at Atlee, excelling in basketball and baseball. Eric Kolenich can be reached at ekolenich@timesdispatch. com.

Invitational champs Dave Lawrence/The Local

Patrick Henry’s Jessica Rathbone sinks a putt to cap a 3-under-par 33-stroke performance to take medalist honors in a golf match with Hanover and Lee-Davis at Queenfield Golf Club Thursday. While Rathbone dominated individually, more consistent play by the Hawks handed Hanover the win with 174 strokes. Patrick Henry was second at 177 and Lee-Davis third at 181.

Fellow seniors Victoria McGraw and Kaitlin McLendon will head up the midfielders, while Catherine Dozier is primed for a big offensive season at forward, joined by sophomore, and second-year starter, Maggie Ward. The biggest replacement for Patrick Henry will be between the pipes, as goalkeeper Taqiyah Chernesky is one of six 2017 starters to have graduated. Look

for Megan Romero, a sophomore, to make the move from junior varsity and take over. Those first five games include matches against fellow Class 4 competitors Monacan and Midlothian, who are in Region B, opposite Region C, which houses ten teams, including the Patriots, Caroline, Louisa, and county rival Hanover. For second-year Hawks head coach Noelle Najjar, it’s about building on the success of last season, and finding the right chemistry, to help Hanover get closer to what Patrick Henry also aspires to: a trip to the Class 4 State Tournament. “I have nine seniors who have played together

since freshman year,” Najjar explained following a scrimmage with Caroline. “How well they know each other, including having twins who always know where each other will be, it’s fun watching them all play together.” Seniors Julia (forward) and Jennifer (midfield) Yeager lead the veteran charge, as both Brandilyn Williamson and Kora Kane give Hanover experience in the offensive zone. Alexandra Andrews and Katherine Overman join Jennifer Yeager in midfield, while Anna Dockum and Ciara Kocik anchor the defense in front of returning goalkeeper Avery Ancarrow. All of the above mentioned are part of

that core senior crew. But with nine players lost to graduation, newcomers and less experienced players will play a big role in how the Hawks fare this season. Freshman Emma Spain joins the forwards, while Teagan Quinn, Madison Pfister, Ireland Lewis and Rebekah Mercer, all sophomores, provide depth at midfield. Nicole Dubec, a junior, will need to provide help in the defensive zone. The Hawks will get an early road test this Monday when they travel to rival Atlee, then return home to face the always tough Henrico Warriors next Wednesday August 29. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
