3-2-3 rail plan accepted in draft By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND -- It may not be time for a huge sigh of relief, but third rail opponents were bolstered by news provided by Town Manger Josh Farrar in his regular report at the close of last week’s Ashland Town Council meeting. In an issue that divided the community, it appears an alternative plan utilizing two tracks through the town and adding overpasses at Vaughan and Ashcake Roads has been preliminarily accepted by the Federal Railroad Administration. “We received word last week that the Federal

Public Transportation) recommendation through the draft Environmental Impact
Statement (EIS) of a 3-2-3 in Ashland,” Farrar said. “Basically, they have accepted the draft EIS for the entire corridor which contains Ashland’s 3-2-3.” Although there are still steps left in the process, the decision appears to offer town residents a variation of what they requested — no change to the current two track alignment through the town. “What you will see going forward is a final EIS study, which will include the 3-2-3 and then we’re hoping to see a record of decision from the FRA,” Farrar said. EW YORK – Logan Isaac Moncrief of Richmond will appear in the bright lights of Broadway on Saturday, Sept. 15, as part of the National Down Syndrome Society’s annual Times Square Video presentation. The featured photographs highlight children, teens and adults with Down syndrome, reminding the world in a very big way about the contributions and milestones of people with Down syndrome. These collective images promote the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The photo of Logan, who happens to have Down syndrome, was selected from more than 2,400 entries in the NDSS worldwide call for photos. Almost 500 photographs will appear in the video, which will be shown in the heart of Times Square. Logan is pictured at his cousin’s wedding, entranced by the beauty of a sparkler. His little sister, Isabella, is silhouetted in the background. His grandparents, Thomas and Mary Ann Atkinson of Mechanicsville said they are so proud of their grandson and his accomplishments. EAVERDAM – Constitution Week will be observed Sept. 17-23 throughout the United States. This will be the 231st anniversary of the signing of the great document. Bonnie D. Andersen, Constitution Week chair of the Scotchtown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, said, “This week should emphasize the responsibilities of learning about, protecting, defending, and preserving the Constitution, and studying the historical events that occurred during September 1787.” Andersen shared the following, written by Jeanie Hornung, Constitution national chair, Week Committee: “We the People of the United States, in Order

Returning to school brings back a lot of memories By Melody Kinser Managing Editor Last Tuesday, as Hanover County Public Schools students returned to the classroom for the 2018-2019 year, some of us in the office swapped stories about memorable back to school adventures. I’ve bared my soul before as the terror with the teeth, having bit my first grade teacher. We did not have public kindergarten then and I was quite content spending my days with my mother. She did take me to school that first day and, as soon as she introduced me to Mrs. Curry, I went into some kind of survival mode
and bit her on the arm. I didn’t want any part of school. To pacify me, my sister, a sixth-grader, spent the day in class with me. I’m sure she was thrilled (not!) to miss the start of her last year of elementary school. She always was a great big sister. So now I have a new favorite story thanks to Tom Haynie, one of our advertising sales representatives. We delight in his stories about growing up in Lively in the Northern Neck. He shared the story about his class that had one too many children when the teacher did a roll call. It just so happened that one of Tom’s fellow students brought along his younger
brother that first week of school. The youngster’s parents had no idea where he had wandered off to, apparently never thinking he had gone to school with his older brother. That’s one of those stories that isn’t funny from the standpoint of the parents, but I couldn’t help but laugh at the idea of the older boy bringing the younger one with him. It was a good thing the teacher counted heads and discovered she had one too many in the room. Today’s back to school experience is vastly different than what Tom and I encountered back in the 1960s.
Technology may have been a word to learn in spelling, but we didn’t have much else in my school. Getting to view a film on the projector was a big deal at the time. I know -- some of you are asking “What is a projector?” Well, unlike the “Go look it up” (as in the encyclopedia or dictionary) standard response from my parents, now it’s go to whatever your favorite browser is on the internet. Here’s to what we hope will be a productive and remarkable year. Most of all, we hope you make the best memories possible.
Unknown is especially frightening for parent of disabled child By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It’s an anxious time of year for any parent who has children returning to school, but for those who have kids who are transitioning or entering school for the first time, the uncertainly is even more palpable. With two teenagers entering their first year of high school, I must admit I’ve had some more than nervous moments as summer began to wind down, and my children’s conversa-
tions turned to school supplies and what to wear on the first day. At times, I’ve felt like chewing the erasers off of that 24-pack of pencils that sits atop the pile of school supplies. Don’t worry, they’re non-toxic. Sending your child off to be cared for by virtual strangers, albeit professionally trained and adequately prepared, and trusting them to protect and defend our children is a leap of faith in the best conditions. But, for parents of disabled chil-

dren, the unknown can be downright frightening, and that’s what has been keeping me awake at night for the past few weeks. My son has reached a point in his life when his disease, Muscular Dystrophy, is beginning to take almost daily tolls on his fragile body, and new indignities and cruelness seem to rear their ugly heads more often. I heard my son talking to his sisters about things he used to be able
to do. As I listened from afar, I thought of the sadness of a 14-year-old reminiscing about things he was once able to do, but cannot anymore due to his progressive disease. It doesn’t bother me when most of my friends talk constantly or reflect or remember when things were different. I find it almost refreshing and it sometimes makes me thankful of the small tasks I am still capable of performing.

But, there’s no denying that as life progresses, many of the physical activities that were once second nature are now filled with impending doom. In other words, I don’t climb ladders or clean our gutters anymore. It all seems natural enough, but my son’s reflections were much more troubling to me, and reminded me of the futility of my efforts to fix Jack’s problem. I thought of the many things Jack can’t do anymore — like playing in the surf, hitting a baseball, or just getting from one place to another without assistance. As he prepares for his first day at Freeman High School, I reflect on a year that has been full of challenges and disappointments, including two broken legs and a progressively cruel disease that has robbed my son of the most simplest of pleasures, things we all take for granted. I suppose all of this contributes to my anxiety, and makes me appreciate the unique challenge of the thousands of parents who prepare disabled children for school. see UNKNOWN, pg. 8

Fall Senior Law Day Session to be held Sept. 18 HANOVER -- Eight slots remain for Hanover’s Fall Senior Law Day Session. On Tuesday, Sept. 18, the Hanover Council on Aging is partnering with Senior Connections and Williams Mullen to provide free preparation of Wills, Powers of Attorney and Advanced Directives for persons over 55 or those with a disability. Individuals or couples must meet low income guidelines (1-person household: $2,792/ month or less; 2-person house-
hold: $3,782/month or less). Appointments are limited to 16 persons. All participants must complete and submit preliminary documents to Senior Connections in order for paperwork to be prepared prior to the event date on Sept. 18. The session will be held in the Mechanicsville area; participants will be notified of the exact appointment time and location. (One-hour appointments will be scheduled from 1 to 3
p.m.) If Mechanicsville location slots are full or another date is needed, similar sessions are being offered throughout the Greater Richmond Area. Senior Connections will provide details on options. My friends often ask me why not just let Jack take classes online or provide home schooling, but we haven’t considered that option. Jack has never asked for special treatment, and has shown a determined will to remain in a mainstream educational setting. It’s an environment that he believes benefits his experience and enhances his chances to live as close to a normal life as possible. Additionally, I know his presence also is a valuable learning experience for the kids around him who often recognize his courage and determination. After a trip to Freeman last week to route his schedule and make sure he could make it in the allotted time, I noted a quiet confidence regarding his new adventure. While I had a number of questions about the location of classes, operation of lifts and other matters that would be foreign to most parents, he finally noticed my uncertainty and responded with the same courage he has displayed in every other challenge he’s faced. “Dad, stop worrying about this. I’ll be OK,” he said. And you know what? He’s right. He will be.

He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Luke is an awesome cat! He is really nice and friendly around people. He loves to rub up against you. Luke also has a really well-groomed coat of hair. He is soft to the touch and loves to be brushed. He will make an excellent house cat. Benjamin, 520541, is a 2-year-old male hound. He has had his first set of vaccines given and is Heartworm test negative. Benjamin is a eccentric young dog. He has really playful personality. Benjamin does well around all people that he meets. He also does well around other dogs. Benjamin loves to run and play, so he will do really well in a household that can let him exercise on the regular. liminary decision is a positive sign from the FRA. “I think that’s the best news we could have hoped for,� Farrar said. “Maybe that wasn’t our best or worse choice on what could happen, but that’s their recommendation and at least we have something with certainty that we can plan for the future on.� The impact of that rail decision and the two new overpasses also could impact another item on council’s agenda for the evening: the consideration of what action to take going forward regarding updating the town’s current 2020 Transportation Plan. The 2040 update provides a blueprint for officials when planning roads, improving intersections, or addressing other long-range transportation options. Council approved hiring the firm KinleyHorn to provide transportation counseling services. “There’s a lot of angst about what increased train traffic will do to Route 54 traffic,� Mayor Steve Trivett said. “Will this study take up some of that and give us some direction? I know that they don’t have any clearer crystal ball than we do, but, at the same time, it would be good if they
can let us know what kind of traffic loads we can anticipate by 20 40.â€? Nora Amos, the town’s director of Planning & Community Development, said DRPT data addresses train traffic issues. “We could ask them to incorporate that into their study,â€? Amos said. Farrar pointed out the new study would include data already available. “We are still going to be using data provided by the same people, DRPT and CSX. At some point you kind of have to accept the numbers as they go forward.â€? Trivett said it’s vital to have as much information as possible when planning for the eventual increases. “The more we have that we can at least hold on to that seems firm to make our plans with going forward ‌. the better,â€? Trivett said. Council member John Hodges said gauging the impact of new overpasses on town traffic is vital to future planning, and urged his fellow members to approve the request for $108,000 to hire Kinley-Horn for the study. JAMES LARRY ELKINS JR. James Larry Elkins Jr., 55, of Belle, West Virginia, formerly of Mechanicsville, was born January 29, 1963, and passed away August 31, 2018. He was a graduate of DuPont High School in Charleston, West Virginia, received his welding certification from Carver Career and Technical Center, also in Charleston, West Virginia, and received advanced certification as a master welding while working at Newport News Ship Yard in Newport News. He also worked for Brookfield Machine and Welding Inc., EMCI, as a welding superintendent in Richmond, Johnson Control and the West Virginia State Department. He attended Fairmont Christian Church in Mechanicsville. Larry was an avid hunter, fisherman, football and NASCAR fan and coached his son’s little league baseball team. Prior to returning to West Virginia, while his dad was suffering from cancer, Larry and two of his cousins, Jeff and Greg Elkins, were able to give his dad, Jimmy, ELKINS an evening to remember by fulfilling his lifelong dream of attending a NASCAR race at the Richmond International Raceway. Preceding him in death was his father, James L. “Jimmy” Elkins Sr. Surviving are his mother, Betty Elkins of Belle; daughter, Kristin Elkins, and son, Justin Elkins, both of Mechanicsville; and his faithful beloved dog, Gracie.

JEAN ELIZABETH BROWNE TURNER Jean Elizabeth Browne Turner passed peacefully in her sleep on August 29, 2018. She was born December 7, 1924, TURNER in Jamshedpur, India, to Baptist missionaries Zo D. and Beth H. Browne. The family returned to the U.S. in 1926 and settled in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Jean attended Wayland Academy in Beaverdam, Wisconsin, Franklin College, Denison University (B.S. in
Philosophy) and Westminster Choir College (B.A. in Organ Music). In 1951, Jean was brought to Richmond as Minister of Music and Choir Director by Barton Heights Methodist Church, where she expanded the music program to four adult and children’s choirs. She also met her husband of 55 years, Luther H. Turner, in the choir. Later, Jean served as organist and choir director at Brookland United Methodist Church and taught many local children piano in the living room of her home. Always interested in learning something new, over the years she delved into astrology, healing touch, organic gardening, chickens and goats, beekeeping, finally settling into her true calling, naturopathic medicine. She remained active with the church throughout her life and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She also was truly interested in meeting and learning other people’s life stories. Anyone who met her in her later years would inevitably be asked first where they were from. She crossed every boundary with her diverse circle of friends. In addition to her parents, Jean was predeceased by her husband, Luther; her daughter, Laurie Lou Turner; and her brothers, Phillip Browne of Los Alamos, New Mexico, and David Browne of Santa Rosa, California. DIANE ADAMS VanLANDINGHAM Diane Adams VanLandingham, 73, of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 7, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband of 14 years, Ralph K. VanLandingham; parents, Willie R. and Pattie R. Adams; brother, Stewart M. Adams; and son-in-law, R. Troy Parrish. Diane was a nurse practitioner and worked in the medical field for over 50 years. She earned her master’s degree in nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University
and was a big fan of their basketball program. She was an active member of Smithland Baptist Church in Heathsville, as well as a member of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners. Therefore, when our teachers are being given permission to say yes to things that they are passionate about, they, in turn, get students engaged in learning. When engaged, they’re learning.” With Standards of Learning emphasized throughout the Virginia school system, Gill said there was a lot of criticism when the testing came into being. He said the focus seemed to be on materials and testing. “We believe in accountability; we also believe no single test, no single metric should determine the worth of a child,
teacher or school division.” “When teachers want to go beyond the test, when they want to try out a new an idea, we shouldn’t be scared of that – we should embrace it,” Gill said. He also said that administrators should “Say yes to teachers and teachers should say yes to students. When students are excited about learning, we should capitalize on learning rather than simply saying that we may not have time for that because it may not be on the test.” “They [students] are more likely to master the material that is covered on the test,” which, Gill said, again returns to relevance – “What is rel-
evant to that first pillar for a lifetime.” With the continuing advances in technology, the superintendent said they are in the second year of a five-year tech plan “that we unveiled two budget cycles ago.” He did say they are on schedule. “This year high school received laptops in early summer and our elementary teachers will receive them later this fall.” Middle school teachers got them last year. Laptops will be made available to students during the middle and high school years. A significant addition to the county schools this year is the Raptor Visitor Management System, whereby
first-time visitors are automatically checked against the Sex Offender Registry. Gill sees the system as another tool in ensuring safety and security in all the schools. Those who are cleared to enter the building receive an ID badge is printed with a photo identification. “When staff sees them in the hallway, they will either be wearing a staff or visitor ID. He said they are “teaching in a digital environment and the technology has to be used in a way that is going to be transformational in learning and allow our students to do things that otherwise would not be possible without the technology.” HCPS has “upgraded infra-
structure in all of our buildings to handle increased traffic.” Lee-Davis High School and Patrick Henry High School have undergone complete renovations in their auditoriums. Last week had Gill on the road every day as he visited all 25 county schools. With pride, he said he had experienced “positive energy in every building. There are high hopes in all of our buildings this year.” The positivity, he added, was more obvious this year. “I don’t know how really to describe it; a real positive vibe that permeated that. My effort is to really keep it going, and make sure we are able to maintain it throughout the year.”

He received his undergraduate degree in Administration of Justice from George Mason University and is in the process of acquiring a master’s degree in public administration from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Reynal has been involved in many aspects of the Public Works Department while in

He has led efforts to improve the aesthetic appeal of town-owned properties, increased his division’s productivity through improved planning and reporting, and has been responsible for the department’s emergency and special event support. He has worked closely with elected officials and citizens during the design of the future Ashland Town Hall. Reynal also has led the effort to develop a municipalowned dark fiber network to improve the town’s economic
development conditions. He has been active in several professional and community organizations, including the Virginia Local Government Managers Association, the Pocahontas Square Home Owners Association, and serving as a coach for his daughter and son’s soccer teams in the YMCA and Rockville youth leagues. Reynal, his wife Marcy and their children Kendall and Cooper live in Rockville and are looking forward to continuing as active members of the Ashland community.

ICHMOND -- Persons who attended the former Hanover County Training School, along with those who attended John M. Gandy High School, gathered on Saturday, Aug. 25, for a reunion at the Claude G. Perkins, Living and Learning Center, on the campus of Virginia Union University. The reunions are held every two years and this year marked 20 years of celebration. Nearly 200 people, including more recent graduates of Hermitage High School, Highland Springs High School, Patrick Henry and LeeDavis High Schools attended the event. Mrs. Ollehi Ross, Class of 1942; Andrew Bagby, Class of 1948; and Harry Dandridge, Class of 1949, Hanover County Training School; were the three oldest graduates attending the reunion. Thomas Tunstall reignited interest in the reunions in 1998 and he continues today assisted by his wife, Rufenia Tunstall, John M. Gandy Class of 1962, along with George Gray, John M. Gandy Class of 1966, and the reunion committee. The reunion committee is committed to continuing the celebrations as long as there is a remnant of John M. Gandy High School graduates.

Land use program open enrollment underway HANOVER -- Hanover County offers a Land Use Taxation Program under which qualified landowners can have their property assessed at “use value,” which may be lower than market value and reduce taxes owed. The application period for this program began Sept. 1 and extends through Nov. 1, with an additional enrollment period of Jan. 1 to Feb. 1, 2019. Landowners who have kept their property in agricultural, horticultural, forest or open space uses for at least five years can qualify for the land use program. The minimum qualifying acreages are five acres for agricultural, horticultural and open space and 20 acres for forest use.
Property that has been zoned Rural Conservation (RC) also can qualify for the Land Use program. If the land use is changed, the tax reduction must be repaid with simple interest for the current tax year and potentially up to the previous five tax years. In November 2013, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors modified the program to allow property rezoned for specified, more intense, uses to remain eligible for land use. Under this change, property rezoned for manufacturing; transportation and warehousing; professional, scientific and technical services; hotels and motels; and professional offices can still be in the land use program. Roll-back taxes would not apply until the
actual use is changed. About 3,540 parcels and 152,754 acres are currently enrolled in Hanover County’s Land Use Taxation program. This represents about 52% of the county’s total acreage. The total tax deferral realized by these property owners is about $5.1 million. And when Mother Nature finally allowed the Atlee Raiders to take the field at Axselle Stadium at Mills Godwin High School Friday night, their offense found three plays reminiscent of the lightning strikes which delayed action, as the Raiders claimed a 21-7 victory to improve to 2-0. “I didn’t realize it was going to be that long. I had no idea,” Atlee head coach Matt Gray stated concerning a lightning delay which kept fans out of the stadium until shortly before 8 p.m., delaying kickoff nearly an hour and a half to 8:24 p.m. “Our guys were chomping at the bit, but it really didn’t affect our kids. We’ve talked about this since winter time, you can only control what you can control.” Once on the field, the Atlee defense looked to continue to stymie an Eagles offense held to just 13 points in their first two games, both losses. Overcoming a 5-yard penalty, on second and 17, the offense set the tone first as Virginia Tech commit Tyler Warren fired over the middle on a slant to Alex Oliver, who caught the ball at midfield, shook a tackle, and raced up the middle for a 61-yard score for a 7-0 Atlee lead with 4:50 left in the opening quarter. Long Stadium, coach Mike Henderson’s team jumped out to a 38-15 halftime lead over visiting Lee-Davis and then held on as the Confederates battled back in the second half to claim a 48-34 victory in an aggressively contested game that started 55 minutes late because of thunder and lightning. “We saw some things on film that we thought we could exploit, and we were able to do that early on,” Henderson said. “We have a big-time wide receiver: Liam Simpson. We liked the matchups that we had, and he was able to make some plays. “And what can I say about Pat Taylor. He makes plays. Jaguars pounce on Patriots By Jonathan Howard For the Times-Dispatch GLEN ALLEN – Glen Allen was certainly electric on both sides of the ball in Friday night’s contest against Patrick Henry. Perhaps, so electric that it caused a temporary blackout in the stadium. Donovan Riddick and Chris Butler connected for three first-half touchdowns and the Jaguars defense held Patrick Henry quarterback Alex Sikkar in check all night as Glen Allen (1-1) coasted to a 35-8 victory over Patrick Henry (1-1). The game was paused at the beginning of the fourth quarter as the stadium lights cut out just before play was set to begin. The delay lasted roughly 20 minutes as the lights reset. The blackout only delayed the inevitable, as the Jaguars used big plays early and often to score the game’s first four touchdowns. Riddick hit Butler
for a 32-yard score on fourth down on the team’s first possession. The receiver beat his man on a slant, and raced by the remaining defense for the touchdown. On the next Glen Allen possession, Butler took a short screen pass, danced past an initial defender and streaked 85 yards to the end zone. Butler, in his first season with the football team, finished with 7 catches for 203 yards on the night. “Chris Butler is a first year player for us. He’s been explosive all camp, Glen Allen head coach Salvatore Camp said. “He had an off game last week, obviously he rebounded this week.” By bottling up Sikkar, the Glen Allen defense allowed the Jaguars offense to continue to set the pace. MECHANICSVILLE – The Hanover Hawks had one of the longest weather delays in the metro area on Friday night, having to wait nearly two and a half hours from the scheduled start time before finally getting underway at around 9:30 pm. For the Hawks, and their faithful, the anticipated contest against Spotsylvania County foe Massaponax High School did not have the result they wanted. Hanover was unable to stop a talented Panther offense with any consistency, and the
Panthers marched to a 51-3point victory over the Hawks. The Panthers’ ground game moved the ball at will, accounting for 325 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the night. Quarterback Evan Schickel led the Panthers with 100 yards of his own. Although Hawks coach Derek Stoudt saw flashes of potential from his team, the offense was futile against a physical Massaponax defense. Hanover sophomore running back Eric Rankin got most of the workload, carrying the ball 12 times, but managed only 33 yards, with the longest going for 11. The Hawks pass-
ing game struggled to find any sort of a rhythm, allowing the Massaponax defense to crowd the line of scrimmage and key in on Rankin. Hanover received the opening kick and managed to work to near midfield before stalling out. Rankin touched the ball on six of the first eight plays for the Hawks. The Massaponax offense wasted little getting the scoring started, going 60 yards on five plays, and finishing with a long 41-yard touchdown run by Schickel. Following a Hanover threeand-out, the Hawks punted the ball back to Massaponax.

The Panthers returner mishandled the punt, and the Hawks pounced on the loose ball near midfield. The momentum swing would prove to be short-lived. On the very next play, Hawks quarterback Tyler Elrod fumbled the snap and Massaponax recovered. Looking to seize back control of the game, the Panthers drove the ball quickly down the field. By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Most area cross country teams took a hit from graduation last year, leaving it to younger runners to step into the roles of their predecessors fairly early in their high school careers. Despite the youth among area cross country ranks, the teams are lucky: The youth stepping up have the talent to make an impact – some already are – and much of that talent resides among the girls ranks. Atlee The Raiders may have the best, most experienced team in Hanover County, and one of the top teams in the area, among both the boys and girls contingents – both teams have four seniors returning to the starting ranks. The seniors, such as Kameron Helmlinger on the boys side and Emma Sudol on the girls side, have been key contributors to the Raiders’ success for years. “We’re going to be real strong on both sides,” said Atlee head coach Tyler Busch. “Our girls, we lost one out of our top seven. Our boys, we lost a few out of our top seven. So we’ve got a big crew returning from last year.” But Atlee may find its biggest individual contributors from its younger runners. Sophomore Rachel Mudd quickly established herself as a contender in her freshman year. With a fourth-place finish in the girls championship race at the Pole Green Cross Country Classic Saturday, she looks well placed to build upon her past successes. A junior, Cabell Franklin, will also carry much of the running load. She finished eighth in the Pole Green Classic. The performances by

Myers finished 71st out of the more than 250-runner field in the Pole Green Classic boys championship race Saturday. A junior, Rachel Crytser, will lead the Hanover girls continent. Crytser has been one of the top Hawk runners from the time she joined Hanover’s cross country and track teams as a freshman, and she should be able to improve upon an already solid legacy. lenge should be mental, Firth said. “Rachel Crytser now has to transfer the same mentality she has in track – where she owns races and knows she can win – to cross country,” Firth said. “The physical part, she has.” Crytser finished 13th in the girls championship race in the Pole Green Classic Saturday. Lee-Davis The Confederates had solid running units on both its boys and girls teams last year, but graduation cleaned the cupboard – to the benefit of colleges like George Mason and the University of Richmond. So, while Lee-Davis lacks experience, it has plenty of depth on
the boys side. It has plenty of talent on the girls side, but is struggling in terms of numbers. “We’re looking energetic and inexperienced right now,” said Lee-Davis head cross country coach Neil Mathews. “But we’re very enthusiastic.” The boys team, led by senior Avery Witherow, has a core group of juniors – including Payton Fox and Gerrit Moyar – who have been running together for the past three years. Mathews expect that will help all of them improve over the course of the season. Graduation and injuries have decimated the Confederate roster on the girls side. Only eight girls competed in the Pole Green Classic – four in the girls
Patrick Henry The Patrick Henry girls and boys teams seem a study in opposites. The Patriot girls have four seniors and no freshmen. The boys have four freshmen and no seniors. While Patrick Henry’s girls are led by four seniors – Hailey Draper, Emma Fallin, Caroline Joyce and Alycia Richardson – their best runner may be from the younger end of the spectrum: sophomore Emmy Joyce, who led the Patriots to an 11thplace finish by coming in 18th in the Pole Green Classic girls championship race. The boys are led by an even younger member of their team: freshman Trevor Mason, who finished 32nd at the Pole Green Classic. The most important challenge for the Patriots – both boys and girls – is staying healthy. “The biggest key right now is not breaking down as we get close to the end of the season,” said Patrick Henry head cross country coach Jeremy Dobrinski. “That’s what happened to us last year on the girls side. The lone Hawks’ bright spot came with only 15 seconds remaining in the first half. A touchback by kicker Jonathan Kim meant Hanover would have to go 80 yards to break the shutout before the half ended. And that is exactly what they did. Elrod found his target – receiver Edward Robinson for a quick strike and a gain of 22 yards. The Hawks called a timeout and dialed up a similar play to Joshua Blue, for another big gain. Kicker John Dustin lined up for a long 46-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the half. However, Etka was quick to point out that 60-70-degree weather and overcast skies are among his favorite conditions for running, and he also noted that everyone else ran in the same weather. “Actually, it wasn’t that bad today,” Mudd said. She said the most difficult part was dealing with the sweat on her face. She also noted she had difficulty breathing at times. Yellow Jackets overcome slow start, Cougars By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – When you know your starting tailback won’t play and your versatile halfback is not in top form, what do you do? Get creative. Randolph-Macon’s offense used everything from a tight end at running back to a formation almost never seen, then counted on a Yellow Jacket defense stung by Johns Hopkins for 56 points to bounce back. It wasn’t easy, but Randolph-Macon took their eighth straight win over Averett University Saturday night 24-14 to even its record at 1-1. “Really proud of our defense, but really all of our kids. I thought they played really hard,” said Yellow Jackets head coach Pedro Arruza. “There were some tough moments in that game and I thought we missed out on some opportunities.” The first one came early, as the opening drive, which chewed almost eight minutes off the clock in classic RandolphMacon fashion, ended when Chris Vidal’s 33-yard field goal attempt was blocked. However, his Cougar counterpart, Cole Westberry, a Division III AllAmerican in 2017, missed wide right on a 47-yard attempt on Averett’s first possession. Vidal didn’t miss on his next try, hitting a 21-yard kick to end a nine-play, 58-yard drive that stalled at the Cougars 4-yard line with 7:13 left in the second quarter. Just before the half, after Michael Sheehan chased down Averett quarterback Jacob Wright at the Yellow Jackets’ 6-yard line, 2 yards short of a first and goal. Westberry missed a 23-yard attempt, and the Yellow Jackets took a precarious 3-0 lead to the locker room. After Averett punted quick-

drive, then an interception of Estes returned to the Yellow Jacket 18 to set up a second score, the Yellow Jackets slammed the door with a textbook 10-play, 75-yard drive, ending in a 4-yard touchdown run from DeLeon, who immediately ran to the sidelines to find Hall and celebrate with him. The twosome combined for 140 rushing yards. Key to the drive was a play that sent left tackle Jordaan Rochester, still ineligible, out as a receiver, confusing the Cougar defense, sending tight end Sam Tanner open up the middle for a 26-yard reception down to the nine. “We call that play ‘Fight Song’,” Arruza explained about a play many Yellow Jacket fans had never seen. “We made [Rochester] a decoy. The Bonds will be sold to the Virginia Public School Authority (the “VPSA”) to finance a portion of the costs of capital projects for school purposes for the Hanover County Public Schools. These projects include various facility and infrastructure improvements and equipment at a number of County school facilities, including without limitation auditorium renovations, bathroom renovations, HVAC repairs and upgrades, school ground upgrades, safety/ security enhancements and upgrades, and building improvements related to the foregoing.
