HANOVER – In keeping with his department’s theme of partnership, Col. David R. Hines, Hanover County sheriff, hosted the first-ever National SHIELD Network Conference last week outside of New York City. SHIELD allows the sheriff and the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office to be in close – if not immediate – contact with the community through these programs: Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, and Worship Watch. Hines said he is committed to maintaining this type of outreach with the county he and his department serve. “The SHIELD Conference served as a tangible reminder of the strength found in partnerships,” Hines said. “It allowed the Hanover Sheriff ’s Office the opportunity to share this initiative of crime and terrorism prevention at an international level and through professional peer and community partnerships, continue to keep Hanover a great place to live, work and raise a family.” Thursday’s program includsee SHIELD, pg. 13

theaters and theater departments across the country,” said show director Barry Scott Will. “Its well-known characters and rollicking show tunes make it a favorite of audiences —and performers — of all ages. Like the comic strip on which it is based, the musical is infused with simple life lessons: the value of family and friends, finding joy in the little things, and not flying your kite too close to a tree.” This adaptation of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” is the latest in a line of musical and theatrical productions staged by Fairmount. Previous shows include “The Sound Of Music;” “God Bless Us, Every One;”

“A Most Beautiful Plan;” “Four Tickets To Christmas;” “Tuesdays With Morrie;” “Scrooge: The Musical;” “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever;” “The Christmas Post; The Choice;” and “Bow The Knee.” The shows are always offered free of charge, and the large scale shows have generally produced crowds of over 500 people for each performance. Hanover County students exceeded state pass rates on 27 of the 29 tests that evaluate performance, falling below that average on two social studies tests. For the third consecutive year, Hanover students ranked first in math performance among the 15 largest divisions across the state. Disharoon said scores from those five SOL performance categories provide only a partial view of what is actually happening in Hanover County classrooms. “The numbers shown . . . do not tell the complete story,” Disharoon said. “The story of our students and their achievements are told every day in the classroom.” The Commonwealth’s Department of Education embraced other measures such as absenteeism and gradua-

Even though Hanover scores remained largely level from last year’s numbers, the division was the only area system that boasted above average scores in all five categories and led those divisions in overall results. Disharoon noted increased participation in the Advanced College Academy, the Health Specialty Center, Advanced Placement and IB (International Baccalaureate) classes. Superintendent Michael Gill said it’s important to consider many metrics when assessing performance, including specialty programs, innovative classroom efforts, and other advanced learning projects. More than half of Hanover’s middle school students took an advanced math class last year, and 70 percent of eighth students took a high school

level language class. “While there were declines in some areas, we saw positive gains in others -- and I’m not just talking SOLs. When we look at dual enrollment, when we look at the increasing numbers in our Health Sciences Specialty Center, when you look at the fact that we have STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) labs in all of our elementary schools, we have to get away from this idea of judging performance by a single metric,” Gill said after the meeting. While those scores are still important, Gill indicated that a more holistic evaluation is appropriate. “That’s not to say that we don’t pay attention to the needle on SOL scores. We absolutely do,” he said. “It’s all about continuous improvement,” he added. Gill said paying attention to areas of concern, as well as areas where the district out-

More than 1,400 county students participated in the healthy heart challenge. Church presented a special award to South Anna Elementary School third-grader Avery Geiges, who raised more than $1,300 for the Association. In other news, the board approved a grant to purchase two buses for pre-school students through a special Head Start program. The separation of pre-school students will improve efficiency and create more capacity on other routes.

HCBOS readies legislative priorities By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER -- With the opening of this year’s General Assembly session only months away, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors is compiling a list of legislative policies, priorities that will eventually become its legislative agenda for the upcoming year. Some of the items on the list have become almost standard on the board’s wish list, including a request that localities be allowed to determine starting dates for school. Planning for the 2019 agenda began in earnest last month at a meeting of the board’s legislative committee where members decided to maintain the same format as last year where the document outlined agenda items, positions on upcoming legislation and policy statements. “The pre-filing has already begun and there are bills in the hopper,” Deputy County Attorney Dennis Walter said. “Hopefully, this starts the discussion that

actually began at the legislative committee meeting a few weeks ago.” County officials continue to place transportation and specifically road construction at the top of the list and urged its legislative team to push for a continuance of the Six-Year Secondary Road Program and seeks more funding for the Revenue Sharing Program that has provided funding for road improvements in the past. Funds for that program have been drastically reduced with the inception of the Smart Scale Program. “We still want to maintain that request for the Six-Year Secondary Road Program and Revenue Sharing, which have a large impact here in Hanover, but there’s also the recognition that we are in support of VACO (Virginia Association of Counties) and other localities for an overall increase in transportation funding,” Walter said. South Anna supervisor Wayne Hazzard serves as chair of VACO’s Transportation Committee and said the panel decided that the lack of funding affected all areas of the state.

“We decided to go forward with a plan that said we just need more money for transportation in general,” Hazzard said. “That way, we’re not fighting against each other. We are joining forces to go to the state legislature with a united front.” Another issue for consideration is an item that requests that the General Assembly amend its positions on cash proffers to allow localities to accept proffers to mitigate impact of new development. A new item on the proposed list addresses students who spend time at internships or technical training be allowed to claim those hours as instructional time. If approved by the supervisors, Walter said, “We will make sure that we work with the [Hanover County] School Board and [Hanover County Public Schools] school staff to ensure that language gives them the most flexibility and is something that we can work with them and their statewide

OPINION | The Local Views From the managing editor

The way we function was forever changed in 2001 By Melody Kinser Managing Editor It’s almost like asking someone from my generation about where they were when they learned President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. The lingering and unforgettable events of Sept. 11, 2001, evoke those same reactions. We all know where we were and what we were doing when we learned about the attacks on our nation. Seventeen years. With the passage of time, the memories remain intact. A chill comes over me as I type. The horror will never leave us.

Sept. 11, 2001, started like most days with me calling to check in at the daily newspaper in Williamson, West Virginia. As editor, I worked evenings/nights through the start of the press. I called the news editor to see what was going on, as in any breaking news. “Do you have the TV on? she asked. “No, why?” “Turn it on.” “What channel?” “It doesn’t matter -turn it on.” She waited as I grabbed the remote, turned the TV on, and paused in an attempt to comprehend what I was seeing. She explained what had taken place and how all staff members were making contacts.

There were residents with local ties in the Twin Towers and at the Pentagon. Everyone was making calls and writing stories when I arrived after hurriedly making my way to the office. The adrenalin was in overdrive throughout the newsroom. As tragic as the day’s events were, it remains a constant reminder of the importance of newspapers. As I recall, and I still have that front page, we had six stories -- five with local angles and the sixth being an article from The Associated Press. The headline was huge, maybe the biggest I had ever written in my career.

When the work day came to an end, we all practically collapsed. Reality then set in and we talked through our emotions as we waited for the press to start. The attacks in Manhattan, the Washington, D.C., area, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, are remembered daily as the effects of 9/11 continue to impact survivors and families of victims. It was a day when we were truly the United States, displaying a compassion and inner strength that brings strangers together in times of anguish. No, I’ll never forget Sept. 11, 2001, and how our lives were forever changed.

Pair of those famous ruby red slippers recovered after 13 years By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist After hundreds of columns on a variety of subjects, I can’t think of many topics I haven’t addressed in more than 15 years of musings. With the exception of politics, for the most part, I’ve opined on the biggest topics of the day to the most minute of life’s tidbits, and just about everything in between. I never envisioned composing a column on a pair of ruby red high

heels, but I’ve long since passed the stage of selective pickiness. Besides, experience tells me to go where the story leads. That leads us to recent news regarding the most famous pair of red slippers described as one of America’s most treasured pieces of memorabilia. The shoes, worn by Judy Garland as she played Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” still garner a collection of “ooohs” and “aaahs“ when fans get a glimpse of the magical pumps Since the movie’s premiere, the

glitter-adorned shoes have made numerous appearances across the country and, perhaps, the most famous pair rests in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. Don’t let the most famous description confuse you. Like many props in major productions, there were numerous pairs of red slippers on the set during the filming and not the same ones were used in every scene. Garland reportedly wore four pairs during the filming. In 2005, one pair of those famous

slippers was stolen from a museum in Garland’s hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, removed from a smashed glass case and gone, it seemed, forever. But, thanks to the dogged determination of FBI agents who worked the case for more than a decade, the shoes were recovered, and earlier last week, the beleaguered agency put the famous shoes on display. The shoes belonged to Hollywood memorabilia collector Michael Shaw who loaned them to the museum for

display. Now, the mystery surrounding the theft has not been solved, and officials would only say they recovered the shoes through a sting operation, and no suspects have been arrested. The search for the sequined slippers took a variety of turns in the 13 years they were missing, including an extensive search of a lake where the famous piece of Americana was dumped. When a man contacted the FBI a year ago offering to assist the agency in obtaining the shoes, the case gained momentum and eventually led to the recovery. And, agents announced they have suspects and asked the public for information regarding the robbery. The shoes have been described as “the holy grail of all Hollywood memorabilia” and are worth a reported $2 million. Apparently, the perpetrator discovered that priceless art or irreplaceable pieces of memorabilia are not exactly hot commodities, and see SLIPPERS, pg. 8

Beaverdam, Cool Spring earn national PTA honor ASHLAND – Beaverdam Elementary School (BES) and Cool Spring Elementary School (CSES) have been named as 2018-2020 National PTA Schools of Excellence. They are two of only 278 schools and PTAs across the nation to achieve this prestigious status this year. "Over the last few years, a core group of dedicated parents worked hard to provide significant support to Beaverdam. Their efforts inspired more parents to become a part of the PTA. We are so fortunate to have such a supportive PTA

and community," said Chip Joseph, principal. "The Beaverdam PTA is excited to be recognized for our accomplishments this past year. We are fortunate to have a cohesive team of parents, administration, staff, and community members working toward common goals: to foster learning, celebrate successes, improve our school, and have fun! We are honored to share this recognition with our Beaverdam community," said Gloria Marotta, PTA president. Dr. Paula Brown, CSES principal, also

expressed her gratitude. "We thank our PTA for all of their support in helping us foster strong family and school partnerships. This recognition is due to our PTA’s dedication and commitment to the needs of our school, our community, and our families. Each day, our school is supported by parent and community volunteers," she said. Amanda Kronenberg, CSES PTA president, added, "The PTA is one piece of the puzzle. training, also can be deployed to incidents such as search and rescue, traffic control, etc. The lower age limit for the class is 17 and requires a parent/guardian attending the sessions. APD announces R.I.D.E. traffic safety initiative Staff Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND -- The Ashland Police Department has announced the Roadway & Intersection Directed Enforcement (R.I.D.E.) traffic safety initiative. Data collected in 2018 indicates an increase in

motor vehicle crashes in Ashland, with a 32% increase in reportable crashes in the April to June period. Additionally, crashes involving injury increased 100% during that time. “In the past, the majority of crashes in town occurred see R.I.D.E., pg. 23

belong to the insurance company that paid Shaw $800,000 for his loss, so it looks like they may be the real winners in this bizarre tale. Who knows if those shoes will ever return to that muse-

um in Grand Rapids, but the public will get more chances to see another one of those four pair of shoes from the 1939 classic. After a hiatus from their position at the Smithsonian to

allow experts to refurbish the shoes, they return for exhibition next month. What is truly amazing about this story is the resounding popularity of a film that seems to entertain generations

of Americans and its ability to capture the imagination of a country eight decades after its release. And, while finishing this column with probably more questions than answers regard-

bills that could have local fiscal impacts be filed the first day of the session. The list of positions also supports full funding for STEP VA and supports the Assembly’s efforts to ensure collection of sales tax for online purchases and their distribution uniform. The board also could continue to support a change in the June primary date from the second Tuesday to the third Tuesday to avoid interference with school activities. Many Hanover County

polling places are located at school campuses. Proposed legislative policy statements might include: Opposition to unfunded mandates from the state. Supports increase in state allocation for transportation needs in a fair distribution to all areas of the Commonwealth. Support maintaining local control of revenue and land use. The board is expected to vote on the 2019 Legislative Agenda at next month’s meet-

ing. Once approved, members of the county’s legislative team will meet with legislators on a one-on-one basis to discuss goals and positions, and how best to further their consideration. In other matters, Michael Gill, superintendent of schools, provided an update on school openings throughout the county. “There’s no such thing as a flawless start, but this was just about as close to flawless as you can possibly have,”

Gill said. “In many respects, it was as if we had never left off in June, and that is a testament to the professionalism of the Hanover County Public Schools staff. And we appreciate your support as well.” Gill said the opening went off with few glitches, and noted the system transported 18,000 students on more than 250 buses that traveled more than 9,000 miles. “That represents only one day. We do it again tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that,” Gill said.

The superintendent reviewed recent Standards of Learning (SOL) scores and assured supervisors that every Hanover County school will receive state accreditation when those numbers are officially released later this month. At the Sept. 12 meeting, the board also approved a $12.9 million bond agreement to fund the new Atlee Library and the Elton Wade Sr. Park in Cold Harbor. Both projects are set to begin in spring 2019.

tlers came from the Hanover Hawkeye Wrestling Club (Atlee, Hanover and Lee-Davis high schools). Wrestlers from the Richmond area, Northern Virginia and Maryland also took part. The trip consisted of six days of wrestling, touring the city of Budapest, learning Hungary’s complicated and interesting history and culture, and creating bonds and friend-

ships between the Americans and the Hungarians. The team wrestled with three different Budapest wrestling clubs, as well as its national wrestling training center, where they had the opportunity to train with the Hungarian National team on a daily basis. The team trained at the national training center more frequently. Not only did they train with the best in Hungary,

they also interacted with wrestlers from South Africa and Germany. Wrestling in the training center gave the team a different arsenal of moves that aren’t taught in the U.S., in addition to a unique bond between the participants. Although the trip focused on wrestling, the team spent the majority of the day learning about the culture and history of Hungary. Members learned about World War II, the Holocaust, saw the famous St. Steven’s Basilica, toured the amazing Hungarian Parliament building and explored a labyrinth where Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) was imprisoned until his death. The wrestlers ate all the traditional foods, such as Goulash and chicken paprikash, which was prepared by the wrestling club parents during a welcome party after our arrival. They were true ambassadors of the United States and learned a lot on the trip. Team members agreed that it was the trip of a lifetime that very few Americans would experience. While they embraced several new aspects of Hungarian life, the local team also held its own on the wrestling mat. Plan are being made for next year’s trip. Coaches and chaperones were Chad Harris, Gabe LaVey, Josh Moses, Mike Yankonich, Billy Maust and Robert Buchanan. Wrestlers making the trip were: Jude Harris, Chicahominy; Liam Harris, Atlee; Alex Frowert, Atlee; Jacob Maust, Atlee; Evan Buchanan, Atlee; James Haynie, Atlee; Will Gaugler, Hanover. Andy Aldridge, Lee-Davis; Elizabeth Dosado, Caroline; James Dosado, Caroline; JD McMillan, Powhatan; Liam Gordon, Robinson; and Fynn Yankonich. Maryland.

at three main intersections, however, crashes are now occurring more frequently at many of our less travelled intersections and on our residential roadways,” Officer Chip Watts, Public Information & Community Policing for the APD, said. Beginning this month, Ashland police officers will be conducting increased, proactive traffic enforcement throughout town, with a special emphasis on those vio-

lations most associated with vehicle crashes and injuries: driving under the influence of alcohol, and stop sign, traffic light, failure to yield and seat belt/ child seat violations. Watts also said that the Ashland Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike and asks that you drive safely at all times. Residents with questions or traffic safety concerns may call 804-7981227 or make a report on the APD’s website at www. ashlandpolice.us.

Warren runs Raiders to win over Freeman By Chip Brierre For the Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – On a short week of preparation forced by Hurricane Florence, Atlee unleashed a different sort of beast in Wednesday night’s 39-20 victory over visiting Douglas Freeman. Tyler Warren, Atlee’s junior starting quarterback, scored four touchdowns, three on the ground and one through the air, totaling 217 yards of offense to spark the Raiders (3-0), ranked 10th in the Times-Dispatch Top 10. “Coaches did a great job and our offensive line blocked really well,” Warren said. “The lanes were just open when I had the ball.” Aside from his impressive arm and ability to find running lanes, the Virginia Tech pledge averages nearly 50 yards as the Raiders’ punter. Is there anything he can’t do? “He is awful at golf,” claimed best friend Tucker Bratton, a senior running back for Atlee. “He is so bad; that is the only thing I have to say.” “Can’t do tennis,” added Warren with a smile. All jokes aside, Atlee coach Matt Gray was adamant before and after the game that the Rebels were a team that wasn’t going to quit. Coming into Wednesday night’s contest, Freeman (2-2)

MECHANICSVILLE – According to senior quarterback Donovan Riddick, Glen Allen’s biggest point of emphasis Wednesday at Lee-Davis was to keep from getting satisfied. By the end of the night, though, the Jaguars claimed a victory that had to feel at least somewhat satisfying. In a game that featured four lead changes, Glen Allen pulled away in the fourth quarter and won 39-20. Riddick led the way with four touchdowns on the ground. He had 124 yards rushing on nine carries. Lee-Davis (1-2) struggled to bring down junior running back Devin Flowers as well, and he ran for 135 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. NASCAR collector chases Guinness dream By Jonathan Howard For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – When Armand “Bubba” Carter and wife Cathy moved to Mechanicsville a few years ago, they hardly looked at the home they would eventually buy. Bubba saw the two garage spaces and decided it was the place for him. There is good reason for Carter to have been pleased with the garage space. He is a man of many passions and hobbies. He builds and races go-karts. He hand paints cars and etches the windows with themed designs that have won multiple awards at car shows. But no passion requires more space than his NASCAR collection. At roughly 4,200 unique pieces, it is a sight to see. Carter has a goal in sight for his collection: a spot in the Guinness World Records. The Carters have been in contact with Guinness, and have learned that there is no record for such a collection in existence. In order to set the initial record, Carter will need to officially have 5,000 pieces of unique memorabilia in his collection. In a way, the collecting is perhaps the easiest portion of the ordeal. “You can’t just be in the Guinness book of records, they make you work for it,” Carter said. “There is writing and taking a picture of everything and documenting it. Everything’s got be different.” There are many different pieces to the collection, both big and small. Some are things you might find in a toy store, such as small matchbox-sized cars. Others are things you might find on the shelf of a grocery store, such as a box of cookies or crackers with a NASCAR driver’s face on it. There is even a limited edition NASCAR

No matter the item, it is recorded: Each piece has a numbered picture that corresponds to a notebook containing descriptions of each item, all written by Cathy. “[Cathy] sits down and writes it – everything – in the book,” Carter said. Carter’s love for NASCAR began in the late 70’s, when his older brother took him to a race at Richmond Raceway. He ended up following Dale Earnhardt’s Wrangler car that day, and he was hooked. His collection began when he found a Ricky Rudd car in a child’s sandbox. The car was missing a tire, and it became the very first piece of his collection. “I got that, and from there, it,” Carter said. home to be his museum. There are still items in the old home’s attic, and a stash of several NASCAR trading cards – all still undocumented in Cathy’s notebook at this time. But one piece, well documented and both literally and figuratively at the collection’s center, is is recognizable to many fans and drivers. we took it to Dale Earnhardt’s mother. She was the very first person to sign,” Carter said. “She was impressed. From that day, we’ve never had someone say that they didn’t want to sign.”

The Carters rarely miss a race in Richmond, and the van has become such a staple among drivers and fans that their rare miss has actually caused concern. “People wonder where we

Hawks just miss on chance for first victory By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – After dropping the first two games of its season, Hanover knew the importance of getting one non-district victory prior to the start of the gauntlet that is Capital District play. Their opponent – in a game moved up to Wednesday night due to the threat of Hurricane Florence – was a Mills Godwin squad already at 0-3, and even more desperate for a win than Hanover. While having a winless team come to your field may provide a much needed opportunity for a win, one must seize said opportunity, which Hanover did not do, especially in a scoreless second half which saw the Hawks fall to the Eagles 14-13. Add to that no practices due to school closing decisions for both after school Thursday and all day Friday, and the Hawks are behind the eight ball as they get set for unbeaten Varina to come calling this Friday. “We made some mistakes in the second half that kind of shot ourselves in the foot, said Hawks head coach Derek Stoudt. “In doing that, everything kind of came to a standstill. Indeed, all of the scoring – for both teams – came in the second quarter, starting with a 55-yard touchdown strike from Hanover quarterback Tyler Elrod to Jaden Johnson for a 7-0 lead with 10:07 left in the half. The Eagles, who had only scored 20 points in their first three outings, found the end zone three minutes later as

quarterback Spencer Rife ran in from 2 yards out to tie the game at 7-7. A little over four minutes later, sophomore Eric Rankin grabbed the lead back for Hanover on a five-yard touchdown run. But John Dustin’s extra point was no good, and the lead was just 13-7. “Somebody might have gotten a hand up on it, but you couldn’t really see on the sideline, Stoudt said about the missed point-after attempt. “Nothing really strange or outside of the box really happened, it just didn’t go through. Rife and the Eagles offense countered just before halftime as Rife scored on another 2-yard scamper, the extra point giving Mills Godwin a 14-13 halftime advantage. The second half settled into a defensive struggle, with perhaps Hanover’s best opportunity coming as the fourth quarter began. The Hawks began the final period at the Eagles 20, but couldn’t score. Then, with 7:45 to go, a Dustin field goal try to take the lead did not connect. Try as they might, Hanover’s offense could not capitalize on the impressive stand made by the Hawk defense, shutting out Mills Godwin the rest of the way. But a stingy Eagles defense matched the performance, and it was Mills Godwin celebrating a hard-fought 1-point win on a night which had a tropical feel. Now, Hanover stares at Varina to end a three-game homestand, followed by trips to rival Lee-Davis to end September, then a trip to threetime defending state champion Highland Springs to start

October. The road to return to the Region 4B playoffs is now much tougher, but Stoudt and his coaching staff are focusing on what can be controlled. “It’s been a really weird season so far, so we’re trying to get back to some sort of normalcy, Stoudt said, referencing the fact that only one game kicked on its scheduled night at its scheduled time, and practice schedules have been affected as well. “We’ll continue to try to push forward and go from here, Stoudt noted. “We’ll do what we can to put them in the right positions and keep focusing on the task at hand. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com. finishing touches on the victory with a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown with 37.5 seconds to play. Riddick and Flowers are two players that Glen Allen (2-1) has, in a sense, built its program around the past three years, coach Sal Camp said. “Those kids have been through the blowout losses and those tough times,” Camp said. “And they’ve stuck with our program and they’ve been loyal to our program and they believe in what we’re coaching them to do. “And, obviously, it’s paying off for them this season.” Lee-Davis jumped ahead 14-7 with 1:45 to play in the first half when senior quarterback Zach Lass hit senior running back Josh Rice with a screen pass. Rice ran up the left sideline, hurdled a Glen Allen defender and scored a 30-yard touchdown. Things turned quickly in Glen Allen’s favor to start the second half, though. Lee-Davis fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half, and the Jaguars recovered at the Lee-Davis 28. Riddick helped Glen Allen cash in with a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 14-13. senior tight end Aaron Bowers for a 10-yard touchdown to make it 20-19. But, with 9:39 to play, Riddick used his legs again to score from 2 yards out. He completed the 2-point conversion, too, and the Jaguars jumped ahead 27-20. Camp said he told Riddick he’s not going to hold him back

While much thought will be given to layout and decor, the noises in and around a house also can affect how enjoyable a space is or isn’t. Certain offenders are driving up the noise levels in homes. New building materials that are lighter than those used in the past can make it easier for noise to travel between rooms. In addition, open floor plans make it easy for noise to travel from room to room, while handheld personal devices can make rooms noisy. FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT Clean indoor air can help reduce asthma attacks Did you know?

D

Allergens Allergens such as mold, dust mites, pet dander and fur, and waste from insects or rodents thrive in many homes. Ensuring indoor air quality is high can cut back on the amount of allergens in the air. People with asthma can invest in an air purifier and vacuum regularly, being sure to use a HEPA-equipped appliance. Routinely replacing HVAC system filters can help prevent allergens from blowing around the house. Also, frequent maintenance of HVAC systems will ensure they are operating safely and not contributing to poor indoor air quality. Mold can be mitigated

by reducing moisture in a home. Moist environments in the kitchen and bathroom may promote mold growth. Ventilation is key to keep mold at bay.

Tobacco smoke Thirdhand smoke, or THS, may be unfamiliar to many people. A 2011 report published in Environmental Health Perspectives says THS is an invisible combination of gases and particles that can cling to clothing, cushions, carpeting, and other materials long after secondhand smoke has cleared from a room. Studies have indicated that residual nicotine levels can

be found in house dust where people smoke or once smoked. Studies have indicated that smoke compounds can adsorb onto surfaces and then desorb back into air over time. Keeping tobacco smoke out of a home can improve indoor air quality and personal health.

usage of products that are heavily scented and choosing low- or no-VOC products can help. Making cleaning products from baking soda, vinegar and liquid oil soap also can keep indoor air quality high. Homeowners who plan to renovate their homes can consider using the appropriate specifications for HVAC systems to promote good indoor air, as well as address any other potential problems that may be compromising indoor air quality. -Metro Creative

According to Energy Star, the U.S. Department of Energy and Consumer Reports, homeowners who want to curb their energy consumption can consider upgrading, repairing or replacing the biggest energy consumers in their homes. The following appliances tend to consume the most energy in a typical home. Heating & cooling unit: Nearly half of all energy used in a home is consumed by HVAC systems. Regularly inspecting and servicing the system can conserve energy and save money. Kitchen/laundry appliances: Trade in old appliances for new models, which are more energy-efficient. For example, an Energy Star-rated refrigerator uses 50 percent less energy to run than a refrigerator manufactured 15 years ago. Innovations in laundry appliances also help make units more efficient without compromising on performance. -Metro Creative

id you know that, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 25 million Americans, including roughly seven million children, have asthma? It’s true, and those numbers have steadily risen in recent years. Asthma is more than occasional wheezing or feeling out of breath during physical activity. Asthma is chronic and can lead to coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, fast breathing, and chest tightness, states the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. In the 21st century, people spend significant time indoors at home, school or work, and indoor air environments could be triggers for asthma. Design a more functional pantry any homeowners wish they had more storage space, and kitchens are one area where people seemingly can always use more storage.

M

Despite a desire for more kitchen space, until recently, kitchen pantries fell out of favor. Builders and architects may have thought that close proximity to supermarkets as well as multiuse cabinets in kitchens would offset the need for pantries. But according to a recent survey from the National Association of Home Builders, a kitchen pantry is the most desirable kitchen feature for buyers in the market for a new home. According to a 2016 survey from

ReportLinker, 98 percent of Americans say cooking at home is their preferred way to prepare a meal. And despite the wide array of restaurants, prepared meals and fast food options nearby, more than one-third of people cook at home daily, with nearly 50 percent cooking between three and six days a week. In order to accommodate for spending more time in the kitchen, homeowners are directing additional attention to kitchen preparation and storage features. In fact, one recent trend in kitchen renovations is creating custom-designed pantries.

Find the appropriate space Ideally, pantries should be in or adjacent to the kitchen. But not every home layout allows for this setup. Some homeowners need to move storage pantries into the garage, the basement or a mud/laundry room. Various factors should be considered before placing a pantry outside a kitchen. What is the

Basement remodeling tips to expand your home takes on water, either through the walls or a concrete slab, a professional waterproofing company can come in and fix these issues so they will not damage drywall and flooring afterwards. The presence of insects and pests also must be addressed. Exterminators can help homeowners figure out which insects are in their basements and how to make the space less hospitable to these unwelcome guests so that the room will become comfortable for human occupants. Space is often at a premium in basements, which may contain HVAC units, water heaters, filtration devices, ductwork, pipes, and the other appliances. Qualified contractors can suggest solutions for cordoning off

appliances and camouflaging pipes and wires so they won’t detract from the finished product. However, building access panels into the design will make it easier to service or repair features as necessary. Homeowners also may want to wrap pipes before drywall is installed to quiet noisy drainage pipes. Uneven basement flooring will need to be smoothed out and flattened before carpeting or tile can be laid down. A self-leveling underlayment can be applied to fill in gullies, while larger crack and holes will need to be patched. Once the structure of the basement is addressed, then the design work can begin. Many professionals advise against drop ceilings, which can take away from ceiling

height and look cheap. Basements can be dark, so the addition of plenty of lighting can help brighten the room. Small basement windows can be replaced with larger ones to add more light as well. Homeowners can mimic built-ins and architectural details from elsewhere in the home so the basement is aesthetically cohesive and doesn’t seem like an addition. Bookcases and shelving can add valuable storage space as well. Decorate the basement with bright, neutral colors so they make the space feel more inviting. With some effort and financial investment, basements can be as beautiful and functional as other rooms in a home. -Metro Creative

basement remodeling project can add valuable and usable space to a home. For many years, homeowners overlooked the potential of a basement remodel, perhaps thinking it would not be a smart return on investment. But that’s no longer the case. The latest ‘Cost vs. Value’ report from Remodeling magazine says the average basement remodel can cost

A

around $61,000 with a 70.3 percent recoup rate. In addition, HGTV says architects and contractors indicate the cost of redoing a basement is roughly one-third to one-half less than the price of putting an addition on a home. Before remodeling a basement, homeowners should think about how they want to use the space. Homeowners also must focus on some potential obstacles in

a basement that will need to be addressed so that the area can be as functional as possible. Basements can be chilly and damp. That means moisture issues and heating and cooling needs must be addressed prior to any construction. Homeowners may have to consider the installation of a dehumidifier and run venting through the basement to allow for proper climate control. If a basement
