Governor recognizes HCSO for support, recruitment of veterans By Melody Kinser Managing Editor RICHMOND -- The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office was honored last week by Gov. Ralph Northam for innovation in support and recruitment of veterans. On Tuesday, Sept. 25, Col. David R. Hines and his department received the V3 Locality Award. “Veterans are some of the best, most selfless individuals among us,” Hines said. “They truly understand the team concept that we promote at the Sheriff ’s Office and already share our values of commitment, professionalism, compassion, honor and accountability.”

“Virginia is home to one of the largest veteran populations and has more veterans per capita in our labor force than any other state in America.” GOV. RALPH NORTHAM

“It is my belief that all employers need to make a concerted effort to recruit those that have sacrificed so much in service to their country,” the sheriff continued. “We have always sought to recruit

veterans; however, over a year ago, the Sheriff ’s Office began to make a concerted effort to recruit transitioning members of the military through our veterans’ recruitment initiative,” he continued. “The Sheriff ’s Office is quite proud that we have a large number of veterans and reservists that currently serve the citizens of Hanover County. We would also like to publicly thank Mr. Robert Barnette and the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve for their continued support of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office,” Photo courtesy of Sgt. James R. Cooper Hines said. The Governor recognized businesses Gov. Ralph Northam, left, honored the Hanover County Sheriff’s see HCSO, pg. 4

American Battlefield Trust offer makes Wade park uncertain By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER -- The land surrounding the crossroads where Cold Harbor Road meets Rockhill Road hasn’t changed much in the 150 years since soldiers faced off in a significant battle during the Civil War. In the past several months, residents feared all of that would change if an approved park for the land proceeded. And for all intents and purposes, it seemed like it would. That all changed when Scott Wyatt, who represents the Cold Harbor District on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, requested a deferral on a Conditional Use Permit that would have rezoned property outlined for the new park named for former supervisor Elton Wade Sr.

A hint of what might be in the air followed as a number of speakers took advantage of Citizens’ Time to address issuers regarding the future of the proposed park. Thomas Gilmore of the American Battlefield Trust said the land in GILMORE question represents a significant and unique slice of American history — a site worth preserving in perpetuity. Gilmore said he couldn’t immediately think of another site in the United States where two battles, Gaines Mill and Cold Harbor, intersected.

“There’s probably no other site in the U.S. where that is the case,” Gilmore said. “From a historic importance perspective, I would say there’s not an equivalent in terms of what we are trying to preserve across the United States.” WYATT The Trust, based in Washington, D.C., receives most to its funding through the American Battlefield Protection Program. Gilmore is a real estate expert with the Trust, the largest land trust group involved in preserving Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War sites.

“I’m here tonight to express our interest in acquiring the site of the Elton Wade Park. Specifically, the 50 acres is located on the Cold Harbor battlefield,” Gilmore said. Of the 384 recognized battlefield sites in the United States, each is given an A through D grade to designate its importance or significance. The land in question gained an A rating, signifying top priority in historical importance. “They are equivalent in importance to Gettysburg, Antietam, Shiloh, Manassas — all the famous sites associated with the [Civil] war,” Gilmore said. “What we would propose is to work with the county and basically work out some sort of purchase agreement where we could actually buy this property and preserve it and eventusee PARK, pg. 4

and government agencies for their ongoing commitment to creating employment opportunities for Virginia’s military veterans at the 2018 Virginia Workforce Conference, hosted by the Virginia Chamber Foundation. More than 650 businesses, state and local government agencies and educational institutions, certified under the Virginia Values Veterans (V3) Program have hired nearly 36,000 veterans since the program’s inception in 2012.

“Virginia is home to one of the largest veteran populations and has more veterans per capita in our labor force than any other state in America,” said Northam. “All Virginians have the responsibility to serve these veterans as they have served us. As a veteran myself, I am proud that we continue to do this so effectively through our unique V3 Program. V3 is a true public-private partnership with a proven track record in encouraging companies to hire and retain skilled veteran leaders in our civilian workforce. Our focus on creating economic

opportunities for veterans and their families reflects our commitment to keeping Virginia the most veteran-friendly state in America.” Northam was joined by Virginia Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs Carlos Hopkins and Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Veterans Services John L. Newby II in presenting a series of special achievement awards at the 6th Annual V3 Awards Luncheon during the 2018 Virginia Workforce Conference. “It is fitting that the theme of this year’s Workforce

It is an honor to recognize the V3 Certified Partners here today for their leadership in seeking and hiring veterans to be part of their workforce.” “Today’s event brought together hundreds of employers, educators, human resource managers, veterans groups and policymakers from every corner of the Commonwealth to explore opportunities and share best practices to fill workforce demand with one of our greatest resources—our highly skilled veterans,” said Commissioner Newby. “We are honored that Governor Northam joined us today to personally recognize these V3

He also noted the significance of a small crossroads where east meets west and north meets south. “It was at these crossroads where two grand armies maneuvered against each other, not once but twice,” Adams said. “Historians tell us that few other Civil War locations contain an intersection providing this number of militarily valuable pathways.” “I urge the Hanover County Board of Supervisors to adopt a vision for the future for one of the most historic sites within our county,” Adams said. SHLAND -- Ashland Train Day will be chugging into downtown Ashland on Saturday, Nov. 3. What started out as a small event hosted by the Ashland Library 16 years ago has turned into a large annual event along the tracks in Ashland. “As Ashland Train Day grows, we need more volunteers to support the many activities we offer,” Bill Gatewood, chair of Ashland Train Day, said. Volunteer opportunities include Train Day greeters, parking attendants, Information Booth helpers, Kid Zone assistants, Scavenger Hunt conductors, Kiddie Train Station masters, Trolley Docents and more.

Thanks to the Ashland Kiwanis Club, it is easy to sign up to volunteer. The online sign-up form is available on the Ashland Train Day website (ashlandtrainday.com). Teenagers and adults are encouraged to volunteer. “It is a great opportunity for high schoolers to earn hours for school club requirements,” Jen Chambers, a longtime Train Day committee member, said. OPINION | The Local Views From the managing editor

A career that started in 1975 has had many rewards By Melody Kinser Managing Editor t 19, I wasn’t particularly responsible, motivated or ambitious. But it was around this time in 1975 that my newspaper career began. Without any goal toward employment, and little, if any, thought about the future, I was attending classes at the local community college -- despite having been accepted at Marshall University (one of many regrets). A guidance counselor suggested I apply for a part-time proofreader’s position at the local daily newspaper. I was taking a course that counted for three college hours to be working in the private sector. The only editor-in-chief in my career knew my parents and the acclaim my sister had brought to the county with numerous

A

scholastic achievements, including being the female Presidential Scholar representing West Virginia. (She worried I would live in her shadow, when, in fact, I took full advantage of it. Totally different personalities.) Anyway, based on his knowledge of my family, I was hired. I remember sitting in the newsroom surrounded by names and faces I had seen in print for years. It was comical the way they looked at me, monitored how and what they said in my presence, and gradually started teaching me. The 16 years there have proven invaluable, setting the stage for a profession that I plan to hold onto into retirement. I remain in contact with three of the men who influenced those early years. My first managing editor is my mentor. He has cel-

ebrated my successes along the way. He saw something in that carefree kid and decided to mold her into a journalist. And what a ride it has been. I interviewed a Kennedy (Bobby’s son Joe when he was campaigning for Michael Dukakis), and met Gov. Bill Clinton and U.S. Sen. Al Gore before they joined to become president and vice president of the United States. Celebrity encounters include Chuck Norris (being the only female reporter there was an advantage) and three days covering Richard Gere while filming “Primal Fear” in West Virginia. An assistant director approached me about doing a walk-on in the Gere film. I declined, finding the notion quite humorous. So many experiences. So many memories.

Among the greatest blessings in this journey are the people I have met along way and the friends I have made. Those are the real rewards. With 10 years in at Richmond Suburban News, I’ve found a home and plan to stay in the area when I retire. I’d like to believe that a 19-year-old without any direction found the right niche. Thank you for accepting me into your community and with this publication into your home every week. It is with great pride that I am part of a truly dedicated staff at RSN. Without a doubt, there is such a joy in meeting you and learning about you through the stories you allow us to tell and share. Yeah, I think that first day in September 1975 set the stage for a memorable path.

Familiarity a key word when gathering for 50th class reunion By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It was 50 years ago today . . . that a group of graduates scattered like grains of sand in the wind in various directions, pursuing dreams and careers, falling in love, facing life’s challenges with what seemed like

endless optimism. Considering events surrounding that graduation day in 1968, there were few outward signs of encouragement. As a class, we had endured a nuclear missile crisis that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war, watched a president gunned down on a Dallas street, and watched many of

our friends and classmates heading to a place in Southeast Asia that many of us couldn’t find on a map. But the possibilities were endless. We were a generation that had forced change, had questioned authority, talked truth to power, and had still, somehow, maintained a sense of tradition and values from those who had

passed before us. Little did those graduates know or suspect what awaited them as they left J.R. Tucker High School and headed in all directions to chase their dreams. One went to Yale. A slew of them headed to Charlottesville and Blacksburg, and some ended up to Lexington.

I suppose it’s something you don’t consider in the excitement of graduation and the joy and hope that accompanies that special occasion. In reality, it’s the last time you will see many of the people who have been in your life for years. The class of 1968 was the first class to attend Tucker High School from seventh to 12th grade. We owed no allegiance to a middle school. Looking back, it probably wasn’t a good idea to put kids who were barely out of elementary school on a campus with high schoolers who didn’t hide their disdain for their younger classmates. I remember my first bus ride to Tucker. At the time, it was the farthest west I’d been on Broad Street and it seemed like we were entering another world as the bus turned on Homeview Drive for the short run to see REUNION, pg. 8

that would have cleared the way for the park’s construction. Wyatt asked that the supervisors defer action on the application until the last meeting in October. That request was approved unanimously by his fellow board members. Frances Carmack, another fifth generation Hanoverian, said the park was a bad fit for the area for its inception. “I don’t think the county thought through the whole idea of a park at this location very thoroughly, Carmack said. “I’ve contended all along that the needed athletic facilities be located somewhere it could be expanded to a larger athletic facility when needed. She also cited historical concerns regarding the proposed park.

REUNION Continued from pg. 6

the school’s bus loop. “Impeach Earl Warren was emblazoned on the sign at the end of the road. I was still pondering just who Earl Warren was when the bus pulled into a large paved lot that offered a sweeping vista of the entire campus, or at least the part that was finished. Not a speck of grass on the whole campus, I thought to myself as we exited our buses, dodged workers still putting finishing touches on our classrooms, school’s opening already delayed by a week due to unfinished construction. Day by day, I met the people who would become familiar cohorts on our trip through Tucker High School. I formed friendships with people who became like family, relationships that surely would last a lifetime. And now, 50 years later, we gathered at the Westwood Club for a 50th reunion, most of those faces not immediately recognizable to me, but all of them familiar. Oddly, it was as if it was that first day of school all over again, a feeling of anxiety and

“The Cold Harbor location is an historic area that should be kept as part of the conservation of the battlefield, and in time it will bring greater tourism to the area, Carmeck said. “What was presented as a park is really an athletic complex. Vince Lanesa said the proposed park would be located “virtually within my front yard, and expressed his opposition to the park. “That’s not what I live in Hanover for, he said. “That’s not why I came to Hanover or stay in Hanover. I hope you all see fit to move in another direction. The board entered closed session to discuss the proposal on three separate occasions during last Wednesday’s meeting, but issued no announcement on action taken. Wyatt said he expects a legitimate offer from the American Battlefield Trust

within the coming weeks. “The American Battlefield Trust has contacted the county and are interested in purchasing the 55 acres that the county has slated for the park, Wyatt said. “They feel the historical significance of the Cold Harbor District would meet their desire to preserve that area. Wyatt said the county is ready to listen to the proposal. “The county is going to give them the opportunity, if it’s equitable for the county and its taxpayers, to preserve that piece and look for property elsewhere, Wyatt said. “It could allow us to provide a park in an area where there is more density and make it more easily accessible for the citizens. While one supervisor called the potential purchase a viable option, he said any final decision depends on just what kind of offer is made.

anticipation as we made introductions where, after nametags were viewed, needed none. There’s something unique about 50th reunions, the most obvious being the number of people who choose to attend. This gathering was no different, and former students traveled from all parts of the East Coast to attend the event. Another glaring distinction is the way people interact at these types of events. The celebrations have become scripted services provided by professionals featuring the music of your lifetime and similar based themes, but the real highlight was watching former friends re-establish longdormant friendships. And, maybe it’s just my observation, but it appeared those conversations seemed more comfortable minus the clicks and pressures of those high school days. Interactions seemed more honest and heartfelt than I had remembered them in our high school days. Even with the well-planned agenda, the real highlight of the evening were those interactions — talking with people who

were truly special during that period of your life, and speaking with those who weren’t so familiar in high school. I immediately found a friend who was almost like a brother to me during my tenure at Tucker. The years had changed both of us, but it only required a few minutes for us to begin laughing and remembering, almost as if those 50 years had somehow disappeared. He had exited Tucker High School, attended law school and spent his working life as a judge. Now, I must proudly admit that, fortunately, my eye-to-eye interactions with the judiciary has been somewhat limited during my life, but I treasured each word of this discussion. After only minutes of conversation, it was like we were once again youngsters, laughing and joking about past misdeeds and revealing the secrets of our high school days without hesitation. As I left the event headed back to a life that rarely merges with this group of friends and classmates, I realized that those friendships that I had hoped would last a lifetime had indeed stood the test of time.

Dr. Gill: All county schools achieve full state accreditation ASHLAND – Dr. Michael B. Gill, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, has announced that all schools have achieved full accreditation by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) based upon results during the 2017-2018 school year. HCPS is one of the largest school divisions in the Commonwealth to experience this level of success at all of its schools. Students exceeded all of the Standards of Learning (SOL) benchmarks set by the VDOE in English, math, history, GILL and science, as well as met or exceeded the state average on 27 out of 29 SOL tests. Hanover’s student performance ranks highly in the state in all five subject areas. For the third year in a row, students earned the highest pass rate in math among the 15 largest school divisions in the Commonwealth.

Again this year, HCPS far exceeded the graduation benchmark at all four high schools with a 95.2 percent graduation rate, which is a slight increase over last year. The division’s dropout rate continues to remain low at 2.6 percent. “I am proud of the hard work and dedication exhibited by our students, faculty, and staff,” Gill said. “Their efforts, combined with the strong and sustained support of our families, school board, and community partners are vital to our mission and continued success.” “While we celebrate our accomplishments, we are acutely aware that test scores alone do not measure the success or worth of a student, teacher, school, or division. The new Standards of Accreditation introduced this year reflect this, which is a welcome change. As always, our primary focus remains upon meeting the unique needs of every student to further close achievement gaps and help every student reach their fullest potential,” he said. The Universe from the Center: Probe orbiting and studying rock By Dr. George Spagna Special to The Local Note: The Keeble Observatory at Randolph-Macon College will resume weekly public viewing sessions in October. (We have been delayed by the hurricane and subsequent bad weather in the Ashland area.) Watch the website (https://www.rmc.edu/campuslife/facilities/keeble-observatory) for an announcement of dates and times. Or, call the Keeble Information line at 804-752-3210. Imagine a diamond-shaped rock, about 1 km across, orbiting the Sun. Imagine that you could send a probe to orbit and study it, and even land a couple of smaller probes on it. Well,

the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has apparently just done that. The rock is an asteroid named Ryugu, the probe is Hayabusa-2,

and the landers (Minerva-II 1A and 1B) were deployed on Sept 21. Hyabusa-2 was launched 3½ years ago, and arrived at its target last June. After progressively lowering its orbit, the landers were released about 60 meters from the surface, and preliminary data suggest they landed successfully. Each is very small – only about three and a half pounds – and each is equipped with wide angle and stereo cameras, temperature probes, and a unique “hopping” motor which will allow them to move around on the surface. (Wheels won’t work because of the extremely weak gravity of the asteroid.) This month, another lander called Mascot (developed jointly by German

Metro Creative Graphics

and French investigators) will be deployed. Later in the month Hyabusa itself will attempt to land and collect samples, Further in the mission, the probe will detonate an explosive charge to excavate pristine material from see ROCK, pg. 17

below the surface. Samples from the crater created will also be collected. If all goes well, Hyabusa-2

will leave Ryugu in December 2019, and will return the samples to Earth in 2020. More information is available at the JAXA web site: http://global.jaxa.jp/projects/ sat/hayabusa2/.

Hawks don’t give up, upset Confederates By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – For all the offensive fireworks seen Friday night at Lee-Davis High School, including a wild second quarter which saw 47 combined points between the Confederates and the Hanover Hawks, a must-win game for both teams came down to defense. Lee-Davis, down 43-40 but driving in the game’s final two minutes, faced a fourth down and one-half yard at the Hanover 38-1/2 yard line. Quarterback Zach Lass kept the ball, running to the left. “We brought an inside blitz with our linebackers. We were talking, because (Lass) had beaten us earlier, to make sure our defensive ends keyed on the quarterback,” said Hanover head coach Derek Stoudt. Racing down the line of scrimmage came Stephen Castle, who heard the message clearly and wrapped up Lass, sending him to a half-yard loss, enough to thwart the Lee-Davis comeback try and give Hanover the football with 1:32 remaining. Two first downs later, the Hawks celebrated, finally earning their first win of 2018, leaving both teams at 1-4 halfway through the season, and sending Lee-Davis to their fourth consecutive loss. Early, it seemed to be devel-

minutes, including an 83-yard pass from Tyler Elrod to D.J. Sims, and, after returning a Lee-Davis fumble 47 yards, Eric Rankin scored from 3 yards out. Lee-Davis counterpunched, making Hanover kicker John Dustin retry a kickoff after his first kick went out of bounds. Josh Rice reported deep, and took the kick back for a 95-yard touchdown, cutting the Hanover lead to 24-20 with 1:33 left in the half. Jayden Johnson, however, returned the ensuing kick to the Lee-Davis 27, setting up a three-play drive capped by an Elrod one-yard run for a 30-20 lead. Forty-one seconds, however, proved to be too much time to leave Lee-Davis, who used a 47-yard pass to Rice to set up a 9-yard touchdown reception by Aaron Bowers with 11 seconds left in the half, cutting Hanover’s lead to 30-27. Both teams settled down the second half. Their decisions were more calculated and their drives more methodical. Jack Hawley’s 5-yard touchdown run gave Lee-Davis the lead again at 33-30. A period later, Rankin’s second touchdown run gave Hanover the lead. Just 83 seconds later, Lass pump faked and John Beebe for The Local found Austin Testerman, who Hanover receiver D.J. PH doesn’t go down easy, but Atlee prevails By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

Joel Klein for The Local

Atlee wide receiver Alex Oliver pulls away from Patrick Henry defensive back Blaine Alber on his 55-yard touchdown reception as the Raiders opened a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter of their 34-21 victory the host Patriots Friday night.

MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee may have traveled to Patrick Henry with a spotless record, but the Patriots were not going to roll over for the Raiders. Patrick Henry drew first blood in the contest, scoring on a 2-yard run by Alex Sikkar – a score set up by Jeffrey Miller’s 84-yard kickoff return to open the game – but the Raiders, despite a sluggish first quarter, found their footing and extracted a 34-21 win from their hosts Friday night. Atlee head coach Matt Gray said what his players had inside enabled them to shake off the rocky start and prevail. “I spent 11 years with Pedro Arruza [at Randolph-Macon], and in that program, we talk about character. I was a part of that and I brought it here,” the former Yellow Jacket assistant coach said. “I told them at halftime, ‘Character. We’ve got to display our best character in adverse situations.’ I love them. They fight and they try to do it the right way.” The Raiders had only a 1-point lead, 14-13 at halftime, but they added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to establish control of the game. By the time the Patriots added more to their scoreboard, the game was all but over. Atlee struggled last year, primarily because of a young offensive line that could not give potentially explosive quarterback Tyler Warren time to work his magic. This year, the line is doing a better job, and the results are showing where it counts – on the scoreboard. “We played a lot of young kids last year,” Gray said. “You never want to sit there in the

middle of the season and say, ‘We’re not going to be very good because we’re young.’ Nobody says that who’s worth a darn. But now you look at it and we’re not young anymore. We had some growing pains last year and we have matured. It’s a fun group.” Warren feels more comfortable with his line this year. “This year, we’re a lot closer,” Warren said. “The dudes want to work for me and I want to work for them, and that helps the offense run completely as a team.” Warren finished with eight completions in 15 attempts for 149 yards and a touchdown – a 55-yard bomb to Alex Oliver. He also carried the ball 11 times for 55 yards and another touchdown on a 5-yard run for the Raiders’ first score in the second quarter. Warren’s teammate Tucker Bratton finished with seven carries for 56 yards and two touchdowns – one for 2 yards, the other for 35. Patrick Henry was led by Tyler Newell and Alex Sikkar. Newell had 14 carries for 93 yards. Sikkar finished with 13 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown. “They’re undefeated for a reason,” Patrick Henry head coach Keith Braxton said of Atlee. “We had our chances, but couldn’t capitalize on them.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com. Raiders, C-feds fall short in Region 5B golf champion, won the playoff on the second hole. “Today I played perfectly fine. … I had some ups and downs here and there but I got lucky and just kept making putts,” Kennedy said. I feel fine. … I know at Magnolia Green that I can play at that course, compete at that course and win it.” “If we would have played this way both days, we would’ve competed for anything,” said Godwin coach Hunter Thomas. “Charlie comes through all the time. … He’s clutch. Anybody that gets him a playoff knows he’s clutch. I’m excited, I mean he seems to play better when the pressure is on.” Joining Kennedy in the individual state tournament will be Petri and Justin LaRue, both from Matoaca. Petri and Kennedy both finished the tournament at 4-over-par, while LaRue finished at 10-over-par. Jack Emerson and Jack Miller led the Raiders, who finished sixth in team standings. Emerson shot a two-day score of 167 while Miller shot a 172. “We came up a little short,” said Atlee head coach Stan Thorne. “We were top six qualifying for regionals, but then nobody made it to states.” While no Raiders made it to states, Thorne was pleased with his team’s season. “It’s been a good season,” he said. “I think their overall record was 12-4 this season in matches, so I was very pleased with the team improvement from several players that were returning from last year.”

By Gabe Hauari Richmond Times-Dispatch and Dave Lawrence Mechanicsville Local CHESTERFIELD – The Deep Run golf dynasty continued its run this season, as it finished first in the Region 5B golf championships at Lake Chesdin Golf Club in Chesterfield on Sept. 24-25. Douglas Freeman finished second, and both the Wildcats and Rebels will participate in the team championships at the Virginia High School League state championships at Magnolia Green Golf Club on Oct. 8-10. Both Atlee and Lee-Davis finished out of contention, LeeDavis not making it to the second day of the tournament, and Atlee finishing sixth. Deep Run was anchored by all-region junior Charlie Hanson, who finished at 5-over-par over the two-day tournament. Sophomore Trent Sveum also made the all-region team by shooting 8-over-par for the tournament. The Wildcats had a team score of 595, beating the second-place Rebels by 38 shots. “It was awesome, fun to watch,” said Deep Run coach Josh Aldrich. “We had one goal and that was to reach this and then make another appearance at states,” he said. The Rebels were led by Trevor Elliott, the only senior on their roster and also a member of the all-region team. He finished at 8-over-par and the Rebels had a team score of 633, just edging out Matoaca for a berth in the state tournament. “We were a stroke down going into today’s match, and we’ve had a really good camaraderie while playing with Matoaca this year… We’ve

Patriots, Raiders go distance in volleyball contest Cassil’s face in a season where she’s working harder than ever to help her team find its way. “We’ve been doing a lot of learning,” Cassil explained. “Tonight was really the first time we’ve been able to implement some strategy, because we finally have the skills down and now we can add that aspect to our game.” Mitch Allen led Hanover with 16 kills and 20 digs while Connor Askew added five kills, 21 assists, and 13 digs. Nick Rodgers led the Confederates with 12 assists, five blocks and four kills. The Hawks are hoping to find their niche in October, and be ready when the Class 1-4 Western Section playoffs begin at month’s end. But with Patrick Henry, the defending Class 4 state champions, heading to the Bird Cage this Tuesday, Hanover knows the road to their identity will not come easy. By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Exhausting, exhilarating, and a learning experience. The perfect way to describe the latest chapter in the rivalry that is Patrick Henry and Atlee boys volleyball. Two years ago, it was the Patriots trying over and over to vanquish the Raiders, finally doing so in the postseason en route to the first of their two state championships. Last Tuesday, Patrick Henry came to Atlee with the Raiders in the role of the team looking to slay a dragon. But after wins of 26-24 and 25-20, the Patriots led 2-0. The Raiders bounced back, winning 25-22, then 27-25 in a nailbiting set four to force the fifth set tiebreaker. There, the Patriots survived, winning 15-11 to take the match, as well as breathe a sigh of relief. “Sets three and four had a lot of errors. They ran the middle over and over and we could not defend it,” Patriots head coach Michael Townsend explained. “We really didn’t play well. In all honesty, I thought Jarrett [Carrano] played the best. If it wasn’t for Jarrett, we would’ve gotten the ‘L’.” Carrano fired off 16 kills and had 23 digs in the victory, while C.W. McIlhenny led Patrick Henry with 20 kills, adding 14 digs and three aces. Daniel Hooper lead the Raiders with 18 kills, also contributing seven blocks, while Nick Conway had 44 assists and 13 digs. “There’s a bit of a gap between the higher level teams and lower level teams, so we need to take advantage when we play a good competitor,” noted Atlee head coach Randy Jones, trying to get his team ready to peak come postseason play next back being down 0-2. p.m. And, because we just couldn’t wait, we have another Last Quarter on the 31st, at 12:40 p.m. Happy Halloween! And, BTW, the Moon will be a perigee (closest to Earth) on that day. The New Moon will be accompanied by the annual Draconid meteor shower, but don’t get your hopes up. These are debris from Comet P21 Giacobini-Zimmer, which passed perihelion on Sept. 10. But they have a history of usually being boring, with only 5 to 10 per hour. Occasionally they provide a spectacular show – once generating over 500 in a single hour. At least the Moon won’t be competing! Mercury will be visible in evening twilight mid to late month. It will be out-shone by Venus early in the month. Look for Mars due south around 8 p.m., setting after midnight. Jupiter sets around 8 p.m., so

Our midmonth view about 2 hours after sunset finds the unfamiliar and faint constellation Lacerta at zenith. Your eyes will be drawn west to the familiar Summer Triangle. Deneb in Cygnus is high to the west, about 70 degrees above the horizon. Below is Vega, the brightest of the three at about 50 degrees. A bit farther south but at about the same altitude you will find Altair. The Big Dipper is low to the north, just above the horizon. The “house” shape of Cepheus is inverted above the north star, Polaris. The tipped W shape of Cassiopeia is to the northeast. A turn to the east finds the Pleiades rising, anticipating their return to winter skies. tor of the Hanover Education Foundation. “Thank you Kroger for looking out for our students in Hanover County.” Kroger is the only grocer or national brand to direct a donation toward the student lunch debt in Hanover, Chesterfield and Henrico. Many school systems accumulate lunch debt when students can’t afford a meal but still need to be served a meal each day. The $7,500 donation, $2,500 to each school system, will cover lunch for more than 1,900 students. “We approached the schools to see how Kroger could help and learned that student lunch debt is a mounting problem each school year,” said Allison McGee, corporate affairs manager for Kroger Mid-Atlantic. “We see this as another way we can help through our Zero Hunger|

tions and learn more about the department’s work in Ashland’s neighborhoods. “APD would also like to thank Starbucks for their support of our Coffee with a Cop

Zero Waste program. Students and schools shouldn’t carry the burden of school lunch debt just because a student needs a nourishing meal.” Students and families that accrue lunch debt are those families who don’t qualify for free or reduced-lunch programs but still struggle to get put a meal on the table. Among the three school systems, nearly $48,000 in student lunch debt is accrued over the course of a year. “This donation will be a tremendous help to our students and families,” said Mike Taylor, executive director of the Henrico Education Foundation. “We appreciate Kroger’s support and we’re so thankful they recognize the toll hunger can take on a child at school.” “Zero Hunger| Zero Waste means uncovering the many sides of hunger and finding a way to help make sure everyone is getting a balanced meal,” said McGee.
