Organizer of fundraiser for firefighters offers thanks for help By Paul R Diana Special to The Local

Sarah Suttles shared a photo of her 5-year-old son Jackson, left, who was bundled up for some snowy fun at their home in Mechanicsville. At right, Nick Liberante captured this scene of a woman walking her dog along the tracks in the Town of Ashland. The tranquil scene shows the Christmas spirit, as well as the relevance of trains in the town.

Nearly foot of snow shuts down Hanover By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover County government and facilities offices and Hanover County Public Schools were closed Monday following

Sunday’s snowfall, which was reported to have covered the area with anywhere from 8 to 11 inches. A Virginia State Police trooper received minor injuries Sunday evening after being struck by a 2003 GMC

(Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Paul R. Diana, who organized the Nov. 3 fundraiser for the family of Lt. Brad Clark, who lost his life on Oct. 11 after responding to a two-vehicle crash on the side of Interstate 295 during Tropical Storm Michael, and the two firefighters who were injured.) I was sitting at home that Saturday night after the tragic accident with Hanover County Fire-EMS. I was just thinking about all of those impacted and now what happens. I happened to call my friend Greg Sullivan of Sullivan’s Catering and, as we were talking, he said something that made me think about a BBQ fundraiser. I asked if he would be interested since he has all the equipment and knows BBQ see FUNDRAISER, pg. 5

backwards and forwards. He agreed to do it and we agreed on Nov. 3. I said “Let me work on things and get it organized.” For the next two weeks, I was in full planning mode. I am writing this to honor all of those that made this event possible. The list of people I am going to mention had never asked for anything in return, but I would like to personally and publicly thank them. First, I want to thank Thomas Nelson with the Hanover Crew Foundation for giving me the honor of letting us put this fundraiser on in support of this foundation. Thank you, Mr. Nelson. As we were searching for a venue, I contacted Gethsemane Church of Christ and spoke to Mike Bowes. Within hours, Pastor Mike said we have the full support of the church and can use their facilities. As I began the search for donations to assist in offsetting the food costs, our first sponsor was attorney Ryan Wind of Allen & Allen, with a $1,000 donation. I had popped into the Food Lion on Mechanicsville Turnpike and spoke to Angela. She listened to what we were doing and said, “Let me work

on this and get back to you.” A few days later I received an email from Angela and scored a $450 gift card! Thank you, Angela. I have also received gracious donations from the following: Kirsten Barnes & Penny Brewer with Interior Girls Inc.; Bill Talley Ford --Thank you, Chris Smith; Mechanicsville Honda – Thank you, Chris Harrison. Mechanicsville McDonald’s – Thank you, Lynsey; Anna’s Italian Restaurant – Thank you, Frank; Kroger at Rutland Commons provided 1,000 hamburger buns. Mechanicsville Home Depot, 1,000 bottles of water; Mechanicsville Papa John’s provided lunch for all the volunteers that prepped before the event. Chick-Fil-A; Roma’s; Sam’s Club; Walmart; and BJ’s. I want to thank Robert Parsons with Virginia Propane, who provided us with not only 100 pounds of propane tanks, but gave us all the propane we needed. Also, Ron Mitchell with Richmond Oxygen filled all of our smaller propane tanks and certified our tanks for us. These gentleman barley let me finish my sentence, and said, “We will do whatever we can do to help.” Thank you, Ron and Robert. One of the most impor-

tant pieces of the event was the refrigeration. I can’t thank enough Stephanie Wilson with Mid Atlantic Trailer Rentals, who provided, free of charge for five days, a huge refrigerated trailer for our stock. Once again, before I could finish my pitch, we had their support. Thank you, Stephanie! While I was at my doctor’s office at OrthoVirginia, in Dr. Abilio Reis’ office, I had mentioned what I was doing and if we could get their support. OrthoVirginia donated

$500 and I could not have been more appreciative. Thank you, Dr. Reis and OrthoVirginia. While driving one day, I realized we needed to get the word out. I personally knew Laura Burch with Entercom Richmond and contacted her for any ideas to get the information out on the radio. Laura is another person that gets things done quickly. Within seconds she was on it and within the hour, she called see FUNDRAISER, pg. 7

The country lost a true American hero

aving written obituaries off and on throughout my career, it’s often eyeopening and information what we learn about a person at the time of

death. Such was the case of former President George H.W. Bush. While he had a storied record of service to his country, there was so much more to a man who appeared humble, with a devotion to his God, family and country. I thought about my father last Wednesday as the Bush family prepared to lay their patriarch to rest. Dad and the elder Bush, known as 41 for his time served as president, did not have much in common politically, but their priorities were parallel in terms of how they lived their lives and

represented themselves to the world. Both were men of God -- always placing Him first -- followed by the love of family and nation. And, like 41 said to 43 (George W. Bush) before he passed away, the last words my father said to me were “I love you.” What greater honor is there than that of a man whose devotion to family is among the top legacies he leaves. The Bush family has set an incredible example in terms of the love and loyalty others should seek to follow. Without question, two of the most poignant scenes before the funeral services were former Sen. Bob Dole accepting assistance to rise from his wheelchair to salute his fellow World War II veteran. And then there was Sully, the late president’s service dog. The photo of him sleeping beside the

casket before being taken to Washington, D.C., showed the bond they had formed in their time together. Sully also had a moment with Bush in the Capitol Rotunda. George H.W. Bush was an American hero for his military service in WWII. He was the last president of “The Greatest Generation.” He served nobly in several elected and appointed capacities, and achieved the nation’s top office. So many images reminded us of the great love he had for his wife, Barbara, who preceded him in death on April 17 of this year. They had an enviable love story and 73-year marriage. He made his mark in the history of the United States, and now he has reached his reward for the life he served and shared. Rest in peace, Mr. President, you made a difference, and we as a nation are better for you.

Music will always be considered universal language I’m not sure how kids today view music, or the pursuit thereof. Sure, many of them can’t take a step without headphones or a catchy tune playing on their personal devices, but the actual creation of music doesn’t seem as important as a keen ear. I suppose it’s a sign of the times that a block of music stores in downtown Richmond no longer exists, and

a culture of small distinct shops are only a memory. But, to a small group of Richmonders, the thought of the intersection of First Street and Broad Streets can mean only one thing — the centerpiece of making music in RVA. Today, devotees visit huge big box music stores with thousands of instru-

ments, all of them available in seconds if your credit is good enough. In the 1960s, if you played music in Richmond, First Street was a regular stop on your schedule. My first visit to Southern Music in 1963 was an introduction to a world of music and an association that would last for decades. My grandmother took me down-

town to purchase my first set of drums, a three-piece set of blue pearl Ludwigs. I was convinced that playing them would be as easy as it looked, but quickly learned that playing music is a serious pursuit and there was no substitute for hard work and dedication. Resident addresses large reductions in cash proffers With the recent surge in new home sales and starts in Hanover County, I believe it is time for the Hanover County Board of Supervisors and the Hanover County Planning Commission to revisit a topic that has proven contentious in the past, the large reduction in cash proffers that developers used to be required to pay to offset the costs of roads, sewer, fire and police services, and education that are a result of increased development. As a parent of two school-aged children, I am particularly concerned about how the reduction in these funds, coupled with seemingly unbridled growth, will impact the educational experiences of my children and their classmates. I worry that their remaining years in the classroom will be ones of overcrowded classes and reduction in essential services such as the arts and libraries, which are usually the first ones on the chopping block when funds are limited. Adequately staffed libraries are essential to every school community; however, as the National Education Association warns, “librarian positions are often targeted by legislators looking for a fast way to balance the budget — to the detriment of student learning.” According to UVA’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, Hanover County issued an average of 585 single-family building permits a year from 2014 to 2017. And, according to Hanover’s Building Inspector’s Reports for 2018, the county has already issued 431 single-family building permits through October, so the trend is certainly continuing. these areas will increase drastically while the state’s contributions will continue to decline, further stressing our budget. While statistics show that Hanover County’s enrollment has remained static for the last three years, the state’s contributions to education over this same time period have declined. However, based on the alarming number of permits issued over the last four years, since the proffers were drastically lowered, it is safe to bet that enrollment will rise in the near future. block many times, and, on some days, just strode from music store to store, marveling at the selection or latest innovations. Entering one of those shops seemed almost magical, complete with a unique smell of old instrument cases or brass horns. The aisles were packed with every sort of musical toy. In addition to Southern Music and Boykins, the block included

Richmond institutions like Walter D. Moses and Jacobs Music. Cary Gee Music on Cary Street offered a unique line of instruments and represented the only outlet in Richmond that sold Rickenbacker guitars exactly like the one used by John Lennon. In the West End, Don Warner Music provided lessons for all sorts of enthusiasts, including me, and became the favorite for many of the players who grew up in that era. A sign in one of those stores read

“Music is the universal language of man.” Those words stuck in my mind, and I often thought of them as I progressed through my music career. In that tiny block in downtown Richmond, one might encounter an accomplished violinist or first chair trumpeter for the symphony, or you might run into a guitar player with spiked hair and sparkled boots. That magic of music united them at all, at least for a moment as they shared a common love of notes, patterns and arrangements.

Following those days in the musty smelling shops on First Street, many of the regular customers went on to pursue more normal careers, and, for many, music became a part of their childhood memories. For others, it was the beginning of a lifelong association that provided a living for some, and a great escape for others. But, for all Richmond musicians, the days of small music stores downtown opened a window that somehow never closes completely.

would have been beholden to the old proffer fee of $19,503 that was enforced from 2014-2017 rather than the current fee of $2,306, surely the county would have potentially reaped millions of more dollars for the aforementioned services than we currently have. It is evident from the number of new starts that have been approved along Routes 33, 54, 301, 360, and elsewhere that, more than likely, the number of students enrolled within

There’s still a magic about any music store, even the big ones that seem overwhelming to those used to something smaller and more intimate. For me and hundreds of other local musicians, that lifelong love affair began with a bus ride to First and Broad Streets and a visit to one of those small shops that once lined the block. The stores might be long gone, or at least relocated, but the joy of music planted in that small block, lasts a lifetime.

ow do you act like the perfect person when you know you’re nowhere near perfect? That’s the question at the core of “The Flying Woman,” a new superhero novel by Daniel Sherrier. In “The Flying Woman,” the impossible has become reality. A masked man possesses extraordinary powers, and he’s using those abilities to fight crime and pursue SHERRIER justice. Meanwhile, Miranda Thomas expects to fail at the only thing she ever wanted to do: become a famous star of the stage and screen. One night, Miranda encounters a woman who’s more than human. But this powerful woman is dying, fatally wounded by an unknown assailant. Miranda’s next decision propels her life in a new

direction — and nothing can prepare her for how she, and the world, will change. “While superheroes dominate the film, television, and comic book landscapes, the genre has made less of a dent in prose fiction,” Sherrier said. “I took that as a challenge: How to adapt a genre created for visual mediums into a novel?” He found the answer in one of the oldest staples of the genre: the secret identity. “A secret identity raises interesting questions about what’s beneath the polished, heroic exterior,” Sherrier said. “In ‘The Flying Woman,’ Miranda needs to figure out how to grow into her new superhero role when she feels totally unqualified. Having superpowers is wonderful, but the responsibility is terrifying.” “The Flying Woman” is published through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It is the first book of a planned series. Daniel Sherrier grew up in Mechanicsville, and graduated from the College of William & Mary with a degree in English and Theatre. He resides in Henrico County and has written for community newspapers in Caroline, Hanover

ASHLAND/WESTERN HANOVER | Also serving the communities of Montpelier, Beaverdam, Rockville and Doswell

R-MC’s 150 years of service to town recognized By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — Ashland Town Council recognized Randolph-Macon College’s contribution to the Ashland community and its 150 years of service at last week’s meeting. Originally opened in Boydton in 1832 with 30 students, the college purchased land in Ashland in 1868 at the urging of RF&P railroad officials. In October of that year, the college first opened its Ashland campus. Council passed a resolution stating that “The Town Council of Ashland Virginia does hereby recognize and congagulate Randolph-Macon College on celebrating 150 years of outstanding educational services in the Center of the Universe.” R-MC president Dr. Robert Lindgren and communications director Anne Marie Lauranzon accepted the resolution on behalf of the school. In other matters, Mike Davis, Public Works

director, introduced a new operations manager for his department. The Randolph-Macon graduate told council his welcome to the Ashland team has been warm and friendly and he feels like working in the town “is a blessing.” In other matters, LINDGREN Mayor Steve Trivett told fellow council members that the first edition of Light up the Tracks! was a huge success and drew many visitors to the Ashland area. “We had a lot of people show up and brave what could have been some threatening weather,” Trivett said. “We sampled a lot of chili and saw people all over town seeing the lights and taking photos.” Jake’s Place won the chili contest, and the fun continued Saturday at the Ashland Town Center. Events also are planned for the next two Saturdays in December.

Trivett also updated council regarding ongoing discussions regarding affordable housing, a conversation members began over a month ago and continues this month. “We been having some community conversations on affordable housing and we will continue to do that,” Trivett said. “Staff is doing more research and fact-finding … trying to learn as much as we can to do what we can, what we should in the way of providing for affordable housing.” Council member John Hodges said Dan McGraw, Trivett and he recently attended a community meeting regarding the possible consolidation of Henry Clay and John Gandy Elementary Schools. The coupling would facilitate the closing of Henry Clay and Hodges said there are some concerns regarding the impacts on the neighborhood surrounding that campus. “It does raise some potential issues about the impact of consolidation on that neighborhood and other areas I’m sure we will want to discuss,” Hodges said.

Council member Kathy Abbott said the Ashland Theatre is close to completion and an opening ceremony is being planned. “We are marching forward to a grand opening in the next couple of months,” Abbott said. “We remain very excited about opening up that landmark.” McGraw attended a Train Day thank you dinner and said the response to this year’s event was positive, especially for the businesses that saw increased traffic with the annual event that drew 10,000 visitors. “It helped a lot of our smaller businesses get noticed,” hw said. George Spagna reminded colleagues that after 51 years of cutting hair in Ashland, Kenny Owens of Owens Barber Shop is retiring. “The shop will continue operating, but stop by and wish Kenny a happy retirement,” Spagna said. “It’s well deserved.” Council approved a resolution giving employees a holiday on Monday, Dec. 31, allowing them to enjoy a day before the official holiday on Jan. 1. Town offices will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

SHLAND -Feeling frazzled? With less than two weeks until Christmas, take a break from the holiday madness, and step back to simpler times during this weekend’s Light Up the Tracks festivities in Downtown Ashland. The annual holiday event has transformed “The Center of the Universe,” as the town is affectionately called by locals, into an old-fashioned Christmas village highlighted by a mile-long light display of more than 75,000 sparkling lights. The lights outline track-

side homes, storefronts and buildings, creating a live holiday postcard for train travelers and visitors to the turn-ofthe-century railroad town. One of many features in Downtown Ashland is the re-imagined Herald-Progress building at 112 Thompson St., which hosts some of the town’s newest businesses. No longer home to the Herald-Progress newspaper, which published its last issue in March 2018 after 137 years, the building is thriving with new tenants, including Gotta Have It Gifts, ReAwaken Massage Spa, and Rose Quartz Collective. The building’s festive decorations and holiday lights invite visitors to support local businesses.

“Downtown Ashland, and especially the Herald-Progress building, offers a perfect location for our gift store,” said Lisa McCreight, owner of Gotta Have It Gifts. “We are proud to offer customers gifts that highlight Ashland and Virginia, plus seasonal and special events. There’s something for everyone!” ReAwaken Massage Spa owner Shanda Hileman echoed that sentiment saying, “We chose to start our massage business in the HeraldProgress building to be a part of all the good things happening in Downtown Ashland.” This Saturday, visit the local businesses in the HeraldProgress Building, and enjoy Light Up the Tracks! events all in one location.

Carolers in vintage costumes will hold an old-fashioned sing-along beginning at 4 p.m. at Ashland Town Hall across the street from the Herald-Progress Building. Following the performance, carolers will stroll the streets, spreading holiday cheer until sundown. Light Up the Tracks! offers an evening for all ages. Make a night of it with dinner or drinks at one of Ashland’s many eateries, and browse the unique shops for that perfect, one-of-a-kind gift. HHS junior teaches middle-schoolers about mental health

M

ECHANICSVILLE -- When Hanover High School junior Sophie Ward began working on the proposal for her Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, she turned to a topic that was close to her heart: mental health. “Personally, I know firsthand how hard it can be for a teen to juggle mental illness as well as their obligations as a student,” Sophie said. “When developing the idea for this project, my main goal was to be the person that I needed when I was younger and suffering from anxiety and depression.” Sophie developed an educational presentation about anxiety and depression, the most common mental illnesses, that aligned with Virginia’s Standards of Learning (SOL) for health education. She also developed an

educational support group curriculum. The curriculum included resources and coping strategies Sophie learned during her own counseling and therapy sessions. She also collected several from mental health workbooks and websites. Oak Knoll principal Caroline Harris was supportive of Sophie’s plan. She granted permission for her to visit all eighth grade health classes to teach about depression and anxiety as well as host a weekly educational support group for students at the school. “Sophie is an amazing person and passionate about reducing the stigma attached to one who may experience depression and/or anxiety,” Harris said. “In sharing her story, she has opened the door for many teenagers who may be suffering to come forward and ask for support. I am extremely proud of her and know that she is a light to oth-

ers who face these challenges.” start the process of seeking Sophie worked closely with support,” LePeter added. “I Oak Knoll’s school counsellook forward to seeing all the ing director, wonderful Angie LePeter, work Sophie to supervise will accomthe two proplish in the grams. future in the “It has mental health been my field.” great pleaBoth the sure to work presentation with Sophie and support on such an group were important well received topic,” LePeter by students. said. “She has “After my touched so presentation many lives by kids would sharing her come up to story of strugme and thank SOPHIE WARD gling with me,” Sophie anxiety and depression and said. “They’d say ‘That’s me. asking for help.” I think I have that.’ Several students have been connected “Knowing that you are not alone in your experiences with help because of the information they heard in the is so important in the healpresentation.” ing process and by sharing “Through the support her challenges she is helping group, I was able to provide so many other young adults

additional resources for the students on how to better cope with anxiety and depression including strategies to help them balance their mental health and school. I wanted them to have a safe place to talk about whatever was going on in their lives. I saw so much growth in the students who attended the support group.” Laura Robertson, Behavioral Health Wellness specialist with the Hanover County Community Services Board, is grateful for youth mental health advocates like Sophie. “I think Sophie’s efforts are so powerful because young people are hearing this information from another youth,” Robertson said. “Sophie shares her personal experiences and then gives youth the tools to identify symptoms, seek help and get connected with services. Depression and

anxiety are common conditions, but the average time gap between when symptoms develop and treatment is received is ten years. With early intervention, children can have a much happier, healthier adolescence. Sophie’s changing lives.” Sophie is developing plans to continue her work and hopes to eventually train volunteers and expand her project to other schools. “I believe that there is a lot of room for improvement in how we tackle mental health issues for teens and I want to be a part of that change,” she said. To learn more about this program or possibly replicate it in your school, Sophie can be reached for consultation at sophieward.php@gmail.com. Revamped teams prove formidable foes By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – Between games featuring the oldest rivals in Hanover County Friday, the Patrick Henry and Lee-Davis communities paused for a moment and collectively remembered James Cobb, a long-time Patriot coach, teacher, and – for countless Hanoverians – the first person to allow them to get behind the wheel of a vehicle as a driver’s education instructor. After giving their head coach, Phillip Cobb, -- James’ son – a big victory in their encounter with Lee-Davis, they gathered beside their coach during a moment of silence for “Coach Cobb,” as he was lovingly known, who passed away at age 72. He was still coaching, and putting in work for his son’s team, even into this season. “He coached here 43 years. He’s the reason I coach,” Cobb said of his father. “I called him every night after games. He was my scout. He’d go to scout games for me, and he was really excited to watch this team. I told the girls, he’s got the best seat in the house now.” All Patriot fans were pleased at the dominant performance that the Patrick Henry girls turned in Friday against LeeDavis as they won 71-30. Freshman point guard

22

Logan Nuckols nailed a pair of 3-pointers to set the tone early on. A JaBryah Haverkamp trey 41 seconds into the second period gave the Patriots a 16-2 lead. Last year, Haverkamp often had to carry Patrick Henry (4-1) offensively, but this season she has help. Nuckols, sophomore Ava Smith and newcomer Jessica Oswanah all scored in double figures as the Patriots built a 33-16 halftime lead, and grew their lead to 30 with just under two minutes left in the third quarter. Nuckols scored 11 of her game-high 19 in the first half as the Patriots showed balanced scoring with 13 in the first period, 20 each in the middle periods, and 18 in the fourth. Their defense stymied the Confederates (0-4), held to their lowest offensive output so far this season. Codie Heilig led Lee-Davis with 11 points, while Tori Heller added six. This Friday, the Patriots prepare to face a Hanover team that is unbeaten through the first two weeks of the regular season. This time, Cobb’s crew will have lots more options when it comes to offense. “We have a really solid team as a core. We’re real excited,” Cobb said. “We’re young, got a lot of games to play. Our goal is to get better every week.”

Hawks, Raiders earn split decision on court By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – In the latest round in the most vocal (at least on social media) sports rivalry in Hanover County, neither Atlee nor Hanover fans could leave Hanover High School completely satisfied as each school took a victory Friday, beginning with the Hanover girls. The Hawks remained unbeaten at 3-0 by using precision on defense; a 17-point, six-rebound performance by Jordan Davis; and a 12-point night from Sarah Johnson which included eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks as Hanover bested the Raiders 52-26. “We were a little sloppy offensively off the bat, but I thought defensively we did a really good job,” said Hanover head coach Michael Rohr. “We didn’t give them a whole lot of good shots, and I thought we did a good job on the defensive boards in the first quarter.” That first eight-minute period was key, as the Hawks limited Atlee (3-2) to just four points while building a 19-4 advantage. Davis, Johnson and Madison Miller – with eight points and five assists – kept the offensive pressure on, building a 34-12 lead at intermission. Hanover’s best defensive performance came in the third period, limiting the Raiders to only two points. A calculated decision by Rohr and the Hawks coaching staff paid off in their game planning against Atlee. “I thought we took [Kayla] Maxson out of the game, while [Aya] Youssef played pretty well,” Rohr said. “We didn’t want them to get into any kind of rhythm offensively, because they couldn’t get any easy bas-

of five to start the season as a youth movement has revitalized the Patriots, especially on offense. It will be a great test for the Hawks before they set their sights on playing in the 24th Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament beginning Dec. 19 with a first-round game at the tournament’s defending champion, Trinity Episcopal. The boys game featured two squads still looking for early season traction as Hanover, at 2-3, battled an Atlee team who had seen improved play according to its head coach Rally Axselle, yet with no wins to show for it. The first would come at the expense of their rivals, as Tyler Warren spread out his 29-point performance throughout the game, from dunks to 3-pointers, while the returning Alan Williams and Andrew Cook each added eight as the Raiders outlasted the Hawks 66-59. The fruits of Atlee’s recent labor showed up on the scoreboard. “Our goal, and maybe it’s a little ambitious, is to keep our opponents at about 50 points or below,” Axselle said. “I thought we played pretty well overall. The game got going a little bit fast, but we made some good plays and we kind of lived with it for awhile, then we slowed it back down and kind of played at our pace, and took control of the game towards the end.” It was Atlee with the hot start offensively, breaking out to a 20-12 edge after a period. The Hawks bounced back, stayed around, cutting the halftime deficit to just five. Yellow Jacket women sweep through week shooting, especially a pair of free throws from Knobloch with 17 seconds left, to keep ahead of the Wasps. Chloe Harris hit a 3-pointer to make it 63-62, but Charlotte Woods made two free throws for the final margin of victory, as a 3-point attempt to force overtime from Kara Stafford would not fall. After exam week, the Yellow Jackets pack for a trip to Las Vegas to compete December 18 and 19 at Las Vegas Hoopla, which includes a game against Wartburg, who went 31-1, making the Division III Final Four a season ago. It will be the third time in four weeks the Yellow Jackets play either games on back to back days, or three times in five days, experience which can pay dividends come postseason time. “I think this particular team can be resilient. I haven’t totally seen it yet, but I think they can be,” LaHaye noted. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – Two huge road tests, and a home game in between: as Randolph-Macon women’s basketball came home from Southwest Virginia before the snowstorm Saturday evening, they celebrated a report card of straight A’s. After a late second half run earned the Yellow Jackets a Tuesday win in Fredericksburg at Mary Washington, they returned to Crenshaw to face St. Mary’s of Maryland, and former Randolph-Macon assistant C.K. Calhoun. Rather than a trap game, the Yellow Jackets made sure they weren’t guilty of looking ahead to their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship rematch at Emory and Henry with a solid 80-48 victory Thursday that included multiple career highs. In the storied career of junior forward Kelly Williams, she hadn’t registered a triple-double until St. Mary’s. Williams became the first Yellow Jacket in 12 years to post a triple-double with 18 points, 19 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists, while senior guard Kelsey Wisner delivered her first collegiate double-double, scoring 13 points and dishing out a career-high 11 assists. A 24-9 first period set the tone on an evening where head coach Carroll LaHaye used nine players for 12 minutes or more, including freshman Cheridan Hatfield, who scored 10 off the bench. LaHaye shook her head in amazement at Williams’ performance, as well as the team’s overall. The junior from Garysville, North Carolina, after grabbing 19 more rebounds in Randolph-Macon’s 65-62 triumph at Emory and

Swim teams surf waves of younger swimmers By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

Ivie, Haley Lambert and Ashley Zicafoose will lead the girls. The Lee-Davis boys return Brendan Farrar – a Towson University commit – for his last season as a high school swimmer. Two other seniors, Ian Courter and Aidan Rice, also return, as do sophomores Logan Deal and Daniel Peter. On the girls side, Sara Gaston returns for her senior season, as does Analiese Hargreaves and Summer Santelli. Katelyn Vieni comes back for her junior season and Tessa Santelli (Summer’s sister) for her sophomore season. Patrick Henry is fielding a lot of green – or relatively green – swimmers. “We have a lot of new swimmers that either have not been on a team for a while or have not swam at a high school level,” said Patriot head coach Bob Flanagan. “With that, we have a lot of people that are working to get those high school times, get that endurance up in a short, abbreviated time.”

ASHLAND – While county swim teams will continue their legacy of competitiveness this season, they will have to cope with either a loss of numbers or of experience as turnover catches up with several of them. Hanover has more swimmers than ever, but it lost a lot of experience – and reliable points – to graduation last year. Atlee may again be the dominant team in Hanover County, but the Raiders face tougher and more competition from Henrico and Chesterfield schools. Lee-Davis has some key returnees, while Patrick Henry – while having some returning scorers – will be putting a lot of emphasis on the development of incoming swimmers from middle school. Hanover’s boys lost many of their state qualifiers to graduation, and its girls team likewise took a hit in terms of

experience and leadership. But Hanover head coach George Massey expects the Hawks to be competitive once post-season arrives. “We have good depth, good meet depth, we just don’t have

the individual horses that we’ve had before,” he said of his boys team. “On the girls side, we’ve lost some good leadership – girls that have been around five years on the team. Strengthwise, quality-wise in the pool,

to region members Douglas Freeman, Prince George, J.R. Tucker and Varina. Some early season injuries have hurt Atlee out of the gate. “We really couldn’t get into the flow, had a hard time finding our footing,” Axselle said of their slow start. “And, simply, we weren’t playing very well as a group. The second half of the Tucker game, we got going. Even though we lost to Varina we played really well in that game.” Now with that first win, the Raiders look to keep their momentum as undefeated LeeDavis comes calling for another chapter in their storied rivalry this Friday. That allowed Atlee to slowly work the lead, up to nine after three periods, then, after a final Hanover charge, to 10 with 1:29 remaining. Patriot girls take down region rival Indians By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

In the boys game, the tables were turned, as athletic LeeDavis, turned loose offensively by fourth-year head coach Chad Bishop, ran up and down the floor past a flat-footed Patrick Henry squad for a 71-41 victory to stay undefeated at 4-0. While the Patriots survived the first onslaught of crowdfueling alley-oops and dunks to trail by just five after a period, the Confederates quietly went on a 15-0 run to open the second period, and never trailed. “There’s definitely some changes in everything we’re doing this year,” Bishop said. “It’s because of personnel. We have the ability to play faster, we’ve worked really hard on playing faster and on conditioning. It took my love of Tony Bennett awhile to say, okay,

26

we’re going to give up points because we’ll press, but we’ll get them back.” Bishop refers to the pack line mentality of the University of Virginia’s head coach. As a disciple of current Steward School head coach Curt Kassab, who won a state championship for Atlee girls basketball in 2003, his signature style is to defend like crazy, preferring a slower approach. But with Devin Christian, who scored 16 of his game-high 19 points in the first half; Avery Fusco, who added 11 in the first half; Adonis Johnson; James Wallace and others, Bishop understood in the offseason the athletic ability at his disposal. The Confederates are averaging 78 points per game. For Patrick Henry (0-6), 15 of their 41 points came in the final quarter when the game was no longer in doubt. Christian Berry and Tysen

ASHLAND – Last year, Patrick Henry was something of a one-dimensional team, with the Patriots having to rely upon JaBryah Haverkamp to carry the team. This year, Haverkamp has more help, and that help was evident Wednesday as Patrick Henry thrashed visiting Powhatan 57-34. Haverkamp scored a lot, but freshman guard Logan Nuckols scored a little more. Haverkamp finished with 16 points (nine from 3-point range) and Nuckols finished with 17 (six from 3-point range). They were joined in the double-figure category by Ava Smith 12 points (likewise six from 3-point range) and Jessica Osuanah with 12 rebounds. Despite the array of offen-

sive highlights, it was the Patrick Henry defense that proved decisive. “That’s our focus, especially early in the season. We’ve got to play great defense,” said Patrick Henry head coach Phillip Cobb. “We can develop and work on being consistent in scoring and on our offensive sets, but defensively, there’s no excuses. We stress a lot that its very, very important. We must play great defense. We did that tonight.” Powhatan head coach Kristiy Henderson said the Patriots took the Indians out of their game. “We got out-rebounded. We got out-hustled,” Henderson said. “In the first half it was sort of this gloomy, gloomy game for us. We were down in the dumps. Nobody was scoring. Defensively we struggled, and then we didn’t get any

rebounds. They got second and third shots, put-backs in, and the lead just got bigger and bigger.” Powhatan had a better second half, but by then the deficit was too big to overcome. “Our effort was much better. We worked the offense a bit better. But it was just not a good start. We shot ourselves in the foot,” Henderson said. “We’re young – inexperienced when it comes to playing time on the court. So we’re learning as we’re going here. We made some adjustments [at halftime] and talked about some things. The kids regrouped and came out better prepared.” The Indians were led by Faith Henderson with 10 points and Reese Vandell with nine. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

Brown each scored nine, but the Patriots continue to struggle to put the ball in the basket, averaging 48.5 points per contest. They finished a week Friday when they lost to two ranked teams, and two of their oldest rivals, in Highland Springs and Monacan. Not that everything went Lee-Davis’ way. A lull in scoring late in the first quarter was caught quickly and diagnosed by Bishop. It’s something LeeDavis is working to eradicate. “Complacency set in. It’s happened a couple of times this year,” Bishop opined. “A little screaming from me; they’re mentally tough kids, they knew what they were doing wasn’t the way they needed to do it.” When that’s settled, LeeDavis will turn some heads while racing up and down the court as the season progresses. Joel Klein for The Local Rob Witham can be reached Lee-Davis’ Avery Fusco (23) drives around Patrick Henry’s Jordan Allen (3) in the Confederates’ at sports@mechlocal.com. 71-41 victory over the host Patriots Friday night. SNOW Continued from pg. 1

The trooper was sitting inside his vehicle at the time of impact, sustaining minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. According to Hill, no other injuries were reported. On Sunday, she offered this reminder: “This is why the Virginia State Police is still advising folks to delay travel unless absolutely necessary. The highways are still slick and snowcovered. As temperatures drop overnight, roadways will freeze and turn even more dangerous. If it is necessary for you to travel, then please check VDOT’s 511 for the latest in road conditions.” The school district decided to close on Monday due to a Winter Storm Warning remaining in effect for the county. On Sunday, HCPS public information officer Chris R.

Whitley said, “Additional snow is expected, along with the possibility of sleet and freezing rain. Overnight temperatures are forecasted to be below freezing.” Whitley said there are several ways to stay up-to-date with the latest closings or delays that may be necessary, such as: Facebook (www.facebook. com/HanoverCountyPublicSchools) – Find it here first!
