ECHANICSVILLE – Tasty tomatoes. Those two words pretty much sum up what you can expect at the 2018 Hanover Tomato Festival on July 14. In 1978, the Black Creek Volunteer Department launched what has become the most successful and well attended event in Mechanicsville. Funds raised support the purchase of equipment and training for members. As the BCVFD, The Mechanicsville Local and Hanover County Parks and Recreation prepare to present the 40th Annual Hanover Tomato Festival, the tradition of the Hanover Tomato being in the center tent continues.

ECHANICSVILLE -- Hanover Habitat for Humanity recently joined forces with the Historic Polegreen Foundation in salvaging usable building materials from a home adjacent to the Historic Polegreen Church. The Foundation purchased the home on Heatherwood Drive in 2013. With over 100 acres, the plans are to return the land back to its original state, as it would have been like over 200 years ago. In 2014, the same was done with another house. Not only does that help with preserving the site but also provides more space for events and their 20,000-plus visitors each year. The Foundation didn’t want to just demolish the home and add to its already full landfills. Rather, the organization enlisted the help of Hanover Habitat and the ReStore. The ReStore is a nonprofit home improvement store and donation center that sells new and gently used goods. Within the ReStore, there also is the Recycle Program. A group of volunteers gather weekly to help break down old or broken appliances, fixtures, and miscellaneous unsellable items. These “Junk Guys” as staff lovingly refer to them as, will take apart the items, and pull out the valuable items such as copper, motors,

wiring, etc. After items have been stripped, it is then brought to a junk yard where is it sold. In 2017, the recycling program diverted 763,962 pounds from landfills and raised $13,027. The profits from both the store and the recycle program directly go to Hanover Habitat to help build affordable homes in Hanover County. The “Junk Guys” headed to Historic Polegreen Church and started to take out valuable items. They have collected doors, windows, cabinets, pipes, metals and more. These items will either be resold in the ReStore or recycled. Without the help of a few good volunteers, most of these items would have

ended up in a landfill. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping Hanover Habitat break down appliances and recycle metals in its warehouse, contact Amanda Gunter at agunter@hanoverhfh.org. Recycle volunteers generally meet on Tuesdays and work between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. For those wanting to reduce, reuse, and recycle your home goods, the ReStore collects donations of gently used furniture, kitchen knick-knacks and building materials such as appliances, light fixtures, flooring, cabinetry and much more. The public is welcome to bring donations to the store from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and also have an option to schedule a donation pick-up. For more information, call the store at 804-569-6226.

Plebe Summer is carefully designed to help plebes prepare for their first academic year at the Naval Academy and the four years of challenge, which awaits them. As the summer progresses, the new midshipmen rapidly assimilate basic skills in seamanship, navigation, damage control, sailing, and handling yard patrol craft. Plebes also learn infantry drill and how to shoot 9 mm pistols and M-16 rifles. Other daily training sessions involve moral, mental, physical or professional development and team-building skills. Activities include swimming, martial arts, basic rock climbing, obstacle, endurance and confidence courses designed to develop physical, mental and team-building skills. Forty hours are devoted to the instruction of infantry drill and five formal parades. Namala’s academic accomplishments include: induction into the Cum Laude Society at the Collegiate School (Spring 2018); National Merit Commended Scholar (Fall 2017); Jefferson Book Award (June 2017); Samuel D. OPINION | The Local Views From the managing editor

How can we accept families being separated? By Melody Kinser Managing Editor The wails reverberated through my mind as I tried to sleep the night of Monday, June 18. I had watched the 6:30 p.m. national news that shared video and audio from inside a Walmart that was being used to house the children of illegal immigrants in a Texas border town. What has this country become that children are taken from their parents? The powers-that-be claim it’s a deterrent to either ebb or cease the flow of people south of the border coming here for a better life. One family told a TV reporter that they were escaping gangs.

I can’t seem to shake the sounds of crying children begging for their mom or dad or both. I’ve never been a parent but it is incomprehensible to think that a nation that considers itself the world leader would separate children from their families. Our global standing continues to deteriorate. The ache for those children was overwhelming. They were caged like animals. Whatever images and sounds have been released were being done so by the government. The media wasn’t being allowed inside. Why is that? One youngster sobbing and saying “Papa” keeps repeating in my head. Playing politics with lives -- especially

young ones -- is cold-hearted and void of emotion. There are no acceptable excuses for imprisoning innocent children and depriving them of being with their families. With great relief, President Trump reversed his executive order last Wednesday about separating children from their parents. Whatever measures need to be taken, we cannot allow this type of action take place again. The number of people who agreed with the separation action was alarming. For the record, I believe anyone coming into the United States of America should do so through the proper and legal channels. That’s how my ancestors arrived and were processed

at Ellis Island. I’ll admit I do not understand illegal immigrants who have been here for years without going through the procedure of obtaining proper paperwork or becoming naturalized. But that still is no excuse to separate children and parents. News reports referred to the Japanese internment camps set up in the U.S. during World War II. My thoughts turned to the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. I still hear that little voice crying for “Papa.” If it can happen to these illegal immigrants and their children, who’s to say it won’t happen to you? Think about that.

Father’s Day brings back memories of a very special double delivery By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It had been a rough Saturday. To be honest, it had been a difficult pregnancy for my former wife as she entered the final days before delivering twins. She suffered the entire day with what surely seemed like labor pains, but her doctor insisted that we weren’t there yet — just rest and be patient. The hours passed agonizingly slow, but we finally decided to call it a day and hope for a better out-

come tomorrow. While Mom took a shower, I escaped to check email on the computer. It wasn’t a scream that alerted me. It more resembled a low tone wailing. Had there been time, I would surely have placed two and two together, but reasonable thought escaped as I hurried toward the bathroom. It didn’t take a genius to realize that what we thought were labor pains, were indeed just that, and now we were in full delivery mode. I ran for the phone and headed back to the

bathroom. Now, I’m not sure how many babies this 911 operator had delivered, but, judging by her calm advice and instruction, I’m assuming the answer is many. She walked me through a process that seemed unreal for me, and, minutes later, my daughter Emma was wrapped in a towel and placed strategically on her mother’s stomach, umbilical cord still attached. At the same time Emma arrived, five firemen made their way down the

hall and peered into the bathroom. They looked relived to see the baby, safe and sound, delivered and ready for transport. “It looks like you’ve already done all the work,” one of them said with a smile. “Not really, she did most of it, and there’s one more on the way,” I quipped. Their look of relief suddenly soured and they began preparing for delivery number two. Just in time, the rescue squad arrived and the firemen

and I were replaced with more qualified folks who seemed to know much more than I about these things. Standing in my underpants, I was still in sort of a state of shock from the first images I encountered in what seemed like a dream world. I can’t think of another situation in life that has found me less prepared than the first few moments of Emma’s delivery. They whisked Emma and Mom off to the hospital, where Jack waited patiently for his entry to this world complete with delivery room and doctor. In the matter of a few seconds, the house was empty and quiet, and I quickly dressed, grabbed a prepacked bag for my wife, and headed for the front door and the short drive to the hospital. It was only dumb luck that caused me to stare at a box of diapers stored neatly behind the kitchen closet door. I rushed farther down the same hall and switched on the light to find my 2-year-old daughter standing in her crib, eyes wide open. She had see DELIVERY, pg. 7

obviously been awakened by all the activity but never made a sound as the hurried activity took place took all around her. I thought quickly. I’ll just take her with me to the hospital. I filled the pockets of my jeans with diapers, jammed a spare pacifier in my pocket, grabbed Sophie and we were off for the less than a mile drive

to the hospital. It was way past midnight when we arrived, and nurses had just checked in Emma and sent my wife upstairs to delivery for the encore. I rushed in with Sophie and encountered a nurse who looked at what must have been the most disheveled looking father she’d encountered in awhile. “You are a good dad,” she laughed. “First you delivered your daughter and then you

1920, in Mobile, Alabama, the youngest of four children to UL and Della Grider Osteen, she was given the nickname “Bebe,” as her next older sister could best pronounce “baby.” At 97 years of age, she outlived most of her dear friends and the family of her generation; brother, Henry L. Osteen; and sisters, Vashti Thayer and Norma Martin. In 1937, she married Joseph T. Harden Sr., the love of her life, who passed away in 2002 after 64 years of marriage. Joseph often truthfully stated that he married “the prettiest girl in southcentral Alabama,” to which she would answer that she married the “smartest man.” They had two sons, Joseph T. Harden Jr. (Sidney) of Ruther Glen and C. Richard Harden (Missy) of Mechanicsville. In addition, they had nine grandchildren, Kristy Harden, Kassi Bausone (Tony), Kayley Taylor

(Phil), Rick Harden, Jeffrey Harden (Angela), Joe Harden, Stella Harden, Doug Tweedy (Michelle) and Casie Hanson. The grandchildren delighted to claim they loved her the “mostest,” bringing a response, “I love you to the moon and back.” Bebe lived to have six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by her beloved nieces, Norma Pouncey and Linda Moorman of Montgomery, Alabama; and nephew, Earl Martin of Beatrice, Alabama. The family is grateful to Carmene Greene, Sarah, Wanda and Crystal for their devoted love and care. During her life, she found a great passion for doll-making, and, through years of selftaught crafting, she developed a reputation as a master doll artist, winning many awards for her fine porcelain dolls. For a number of years, she owned and operated a shop at Mixie’s Antiques, selling dolls, jewelry creations and collectibles. Another joy was her

years-long service to Fort Lee Baptist Church, singing in the choir and playing piano for the Philathea Class. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018, at Washington Memorial Park. A memorial service followed at 1 p.m. at Fort Lee Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to Bon Secours Hospice Foundation or the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office in gratitude for the services provided to elderly residents of Hanover. Mechanicsville’s Masonic Lodge #344 paid tribute to Mechanicsville Area Teachers of the Year on Monday, June 11, by inviting them, their spouses and school principals to dinner and an awards ceremony. They represent the many teachers whose outstanding work makes Hanover County Public Schools among the best in Virginia. They play an important role in preparing students well for transition into the workforce or higher educational pursuits. Shown behind the teachers are Worshipful Master Cliff Parker and Master Mason and Hanover County School Board member Norman Sulser. A Lodge Committee selected Atlee High School’s Cindy Garrett, first row center with the plaque, for its Lodge Teacher of the Year. Garrett, who owned and operated a construction company, changed careers and went into teaching four years ago. She is described as “a consummate professional who constantly raises expectations for both staff and students.” Her selection also was based on what the Lodge Committee said she possessed “what the teaching profession is meant to be: passion for her content area, support for her colleagues, positive rapport with her students, and sustaining student achievement both in and out of the classroom.”

Council OKs design plan for new town hall By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND -- Now that Ashland Town Council has approved funding for a new town hall, officials wasted no time in allowing residents an opportunity to weigh in on the final design of that project. Following a public hearing on the latest design, FARRAR council u n an i mously approved the revised design, including white columns and gabled roof. Residents got a look at conceptual drawings of the proposed building at last week’s council meeting. In actuality, the origins of the project run much deeper. The concept of a new town

hall began years ago when officials considered whether to renovate the current facility or build a new one. “We ended up learning through the structural analysis done by PMA that it would cost more to renovate than it would to build a new structure,” Town Manager Joshua Farrar said. Once that decision was reached, Farrar said the town ensured an inclusive process to devise a design for the new structure, and community input has been an important part of that process. “Every step along the way, we were asking the public about this,” Farrar said. Public input decisions during the two-year period supplied officials with important information like what should be included in the new structure and where should it be placed. The town chose PMA Architects to head the project, mainly due to its association with historically designated

buildings. Ultimately, the Farmers Market lot was chosen for the new building, and a two-story building design selected. Then the question of style and design came to the forefront. Farrar said functionality was a key concern for staff, while PMA worked with the public on design and style aspects. Concerns like saving trees and green space had to be tempered with the real desire for additional parking in the downtown area. “Watching those iterations over time I think I’ve seen them (PMA) really working toward this and I think you’ll see that even more tonight,” After attending all of the public meetings, Farrar said he’s pleased with the evolving results. “The internal function is critical and we’re getting closer and closer on the aesthetics.” Farrar displayed an evolvsee COUNCIL, pg. 18

Main Street, council continue partnership By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND --The Ashland community and Ashland Main Street Association (AMSA) have a longstanding relationship that most agree has benefited the development of the downtown district. But some citizens requested additional time to consider a Memorandum of Understanding agreement with the town before approving the revised and updated document at last week’s council meeting. AMSA board president Bill Gatewood told council members the new agreement contains few changes, and relayed a long list of accomplishments enjoyed by the community organization. The group sponsors annual Train Day activities and promotes the popular Adopt-A-Spot program. The group also presents The Chalk Walk and a Light Up the Tracks program that has received national recognition. The organization also promotes activities that draw business to downtown, and is actively involved in preservation and design projects. “The current MOU that has been tweaked a little bit is before you. There are not really many changes to it, but I think they still all fall in line with what has been previously agreed on,”

Gatewood said. Town resident Caroline Coronado has a long relationship with AMSA and currently serves on its Finance Committee. She expressed concerns regarding the organization’s bylaws, specifically terms and manner of selecting board members. She echoed concerns voiced by another business owner regarding the LONGEST lack of representation from the business community on that board, and also cited a need for more diversity on that panel. “We have a very big board, but there is very little representation of the business community on the board,” Coronado said. “I think it’s important that we equalize a little bit more the business representation.” “I think diversity on the board is extremely important and I’d like to work to make that a little better,” she said. Coronado suggested that the board defer see MAIN STREET, pg. 18

The Universe from the Center: fascination with Mars By Dr. Georga Spagna for The Mechanicsville Local Humans have had a long fascination with the planet Mars. Its reddish hue, evocative of blood, has given it the name of the Roman god of war (an idea they borrowed from the Greeks, who called it Ares after their god of war). Telescopic views show a world with a day only slightly longer than ours, polar caps that expand and retreat with the seasons, and two small moons. H.G Wells penned “War of the Worlds” and introduced us to malevolent Martian invaders, echoed in film and radio. The legendary Mercury Theater broadcast on Halloween in 1938 is said to have panicked millions. Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli thought he saw a network of channels on the surface, which he called canali – and which English mistranslation turned from channels to canals.

16

The Mechanicsville Local

But, there are no Martians, no network of global canals linking ancient cities. It’s a dry and cold world, home only to robotic explorers looking for any evidence that life may have once emerged there in a distant warm and wet past. Yet, the 4th rock from the Sun still fascinates and entertains new probes every 24 months or so as its orbit hits the right alignment with ours. Also, every 24 months when Mars is opposite the Sun in the sky it is at its brightest, outshining even the brightest star Sirius. This year, opposition will occur on the 27th – Mars will rise as the Sun sets. At its highest it will be more than 30 degrees above the southern horizon. Both Mars and Earth are in elliptical orbits, so the distance at opposition varies from event to event. Also, because of their elliptical orbits and the fact that their orbits are slightly tilted to each other, the closest approach

June 27, 2018

doesn’t coincide with opposition. This year, closest approach will take place on the 31st, when we will be a mere 57.3 million kilometers (35.8 million miles) apart. That’s the closest and brightest since 2003, when they were only 56 million kilometers apart. The last time they were this close was 60,000 years ago, and they won’t repeat until 2287. Don’t fall for the recurrent internet hoax claiming that Mars will appear as large as a full moon! That trope has been around since 2003. If it were true, the resulting tidal disruption would be catastrophic for our world. Catastrophes aside, the Keeble Observatory at Randolph-Macon College will host two evenings of “Mars Watch” on the 30th and 31st of July from 9 to 11 p.m., weather and sky conditions permitting. Check the website or call the Keeble Information line (804-752-3210) for updates.

action on the MOU until further consideration and input can be obtained. Town planning director Nora Amos outlined the organization’s history and how its role evolved to becoming an economic development partner with the town. In 2016, the executive director’s position became full-time and the town identified specific duties associated with the partnership. The town has provided $40,000 annually for the past two years, and the current MOU represents the continuation of that relationship. Amos said the town expects AMSA to follow the Virginia Main Street Association’s guidelines as well as their national parent organization. Amos said council requested quarterly data reports from MSAA when the latest MOU was signed, but has not received those updates. “I am confident by July 1, we will receive our first estimate,” Amos said. Maggie Longest replaced Tom Wulf as executive director of AMSA in December 2017, and council members acknowledged progress since her leadership was announced. Council member John Hodges asked if a deferral presented a detriment to the organization. “I think we walk a line that -- because we’re putting money in an organization -- we have to set our expectations on paper,” council member and panel liaison Kathy Abbott said. “However, they are an independent organization, so it’s not up to us as council to dictate how that organization is run and how they function or how they are represented.” Abbott said she is convinced that Longest will access the business community and make sure any inequities are addressed. “I am confident that any concerns about representation will be addressed by the executive director,” Abbott said. Vice Mayor Steve Trivett said he had contacted Town Manager Joshua Farrar earlier in the day for a “report card” or summary on how

AMSA had performed in the past year and if they had met the expectations outlined in the MOU signed in 2017. “We haven’t received the data that we hoped to receive so that is what it is,” Farrar said. Regarding economic vitality, Farrar said, “there’s still work to be done,” but also expressed confidence that Longest has the organization moving forward to address those concerns. Longest told council there are five pending nominations for the 15-member board that will be filled this week. Currently, the business representation is less than 30 percent, according to Longest. “Without predicting the outcome of an election that I’m not voting in, I feel confident that you will be pleased with the outcome on the makeup of our board,” Longest said. “We are making great strides in moving forward and addressing all four points of the Main Street approach (promotions, design, organization and economic vitality). We’ve made a lot of strides, but we’re not all there yet and we are open to criticism.” Trivette gave the organization high marks for events and promotion but had concerns regarding business representation. “At the street level, I haven’t heard that they’ve been very good at representing the sentiment of the majority of the businesses in that district,” he said. “They don’t have the confidence that Main Street is there for them the way we want Main Street to be there for them.” Hodges said he was comfortable approving the new MOU since council had already approved the money in its approved budget. “In the next cycle of the budget is the time to decide whether to support them or not,” Hodges said. Council unanimously approved the revised MOU. With that vote, Mayor Jim Foley gaveled his final adjournment, completing two years of service as Ashland’s mayor. “As I depart, I want to thank my colleagues for a wonderful two years, and, to staff and the citizens, you guys are awesome,” Foley said.

ing set of designs that emerged during the two-year period, as the architects combined logistical needs of town offices with aesthetic issues voiced by the public in an attempt to devise a final design. Sam Bowling of PMA presented the final design, a product of those months of public input and consideration of staff. He said final adjustments included an effort to make the building feel more like Ashland. “After receiving some feedback in the last weeks and months, the direction that came from our committee was to go back and take one

p.m. Jupiter is south as the sky darkens, and will set around 1 a.m. Saturn is due south at midnight, setting about four hours later. Mars will put on its best show later in the month. It will be at opposition on the 27th, competing with the full moon. Four days later, on the 31st it will be at its closest approach in two years, as noted above. Our overhead view at midmonth, about three hours after sunset, finds bright Vega near zenith in the constellation Lyra. This is part of the “summer triangle” of Vega, Deneb, and Altair. more stab at really responding to the feedback we had been getting … that largely centered around the idea of how the building fits in with the feel of Ashland. What we have today is a revised modification of the scheme that incorporates the columns and extended roofline and some tweaks that hopefully try to tie this design back to some of the existing buildings in town,” Bowling said. He displayed buildings that inspired the final design tweaks such as the gabled roofline of the train station, the front porch of the Henry Clay Inn and brickwork at the library. “We’ve been working behind the scenes to make a very intentional set of references to some of the historical,

traditional architecture of the town,” Bowling said. Currently, he said the process is juggling three major aspects: scope, budget and schedule. “We’d really like to get this project bid before the end of the year,” Bowling said. “Cost increases happen every year right around the beginning of the year . . . so time is our enemy at this point.” Increased costs to the project could ultimately reduce the scope currently envisioned. In other words, further delays could result in less square footage. Bowling said he needed council’s guidance on whether to move forward or plan

is at about 50 degrees to the southeast. Following the familiar cross shape of Cygnus from Deneb, your binoculars will find Albireo at the head of the swan. It’s not a terribly bright star, but it lacks any bright neighbors so it’s easy to find – it lies about 70 degrees above the east-southeast at this time. A small telescope reveals Albireo as a close binary, with the two stars of very different colors – one reddish, the other bright blue. The redder star is cooler in temperature. Ursa Major is to the northwest, with the bowl of the “Big Dipper” oriented to hold water. This asterism is also known in some cultures as “the Plow” – the reason is obvious in this orientation. Turning to the south we find the “teapot” asterism of the constellation Sagittarius, which marks the

direction toward the center of our Milky Way galaxy. Above and a bit to the right of Sagittarius, don’t mistake bright red Antares for Mars. The name itself means “against Mars” – though I doubt there’s any real rivalry. Mars is a ball of rock in our solar system, the 4th planet from the Sun. Antares is a “class M supergiant” star about 600 light years from the Sun and about 800 times the Sun’s diameter. If the Sun were placed at the center of this star, Antares’ photosphere (its visible surface) would lie between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. for more redesign reconsiderations. “I do think we’re at a critical point.” “We’re literally at a point that, if we add, we’re taking away,” Farrar said. “There’s no justification to keep adding and doing all of it. It’s not theoretical anymore. We are really at that point where we are making hard budget decisions based on changes to the scope and changes to the design.” Council member Kathy Abbott asked if further exterior design tweaks were still a realistic possibility. Bowling said any major redesigns to the

exterior such as a roof extension would require a redesign of the interior and would affect the scope and schedule of the project.

“I commend the architects for listening and incorporating features as folks have called their attention to things they would like to see. I think we can move forward with this basic design.” GEORGE SPAGNA Ashland Town Council member

She also asked about the omission of solar panels from the project. Due to the location of the building, the panels would not be as effective,

according to Bowling, but they could be added to the project. During a public hearing regarding the design, resident Bob Brown endorsed the

project, noting the additional space for council meetings and added green space. “You’ve looked at Ashland’s past and managed to build for

the future,” Brown said. He did express concern regarding any removal of the large trees on the property. “The landscape becomes crucial.” Most speakers had favorable comments, but listed concerns regarding maintenance and landscaping. Although final design images included one with brick columns and one with more traditional

white columns similar to the ones at the train station, citizens expressed a clear preference for the latter. Council members Steve Trivett and John Hodges served on the town’s ad hoc design committee. Both endorsed the final designs presented, and other council members agreed. “I commend the architects for listening and incorporating

features as folks have called their attention to things they would like to see,” council member George Spagna said. “I think we can move forward with this basic design.” Spagna has served on council for 14 years, and said the conversation regarding a new town hall came up his first year in office. “We’ve put this off long enough. The time to move is now,” he said.

Federal Club overcomes weather, Bell Creek By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local GLEN ALLEN – Delayed by one storm, chased away for the night by another, the Bell Creek Barracudas and Federal Club Eagles returned Thursday evening to the pool in western Hanover County to finish what they started, spending night two trying to squeeze in 31 events while experiencing serious irony: getting wet while swimming. Before heavier rain settled in for their second night, the teams finished their competition, with the host Eagles defeating the Barracudas 853429, winning in each division. But both teams will tell you it was a victory in itself to complete the meet. The bigger issues for both of these Greater Richmond Aquatic League Division 5 teams is to make sure the meet occurs, giving their swimmers another chance to improve scores and either clinch a berth in the season ending “Champs” meet at the end of the next month, or move to a higher individual division against stiffer competition. Bell Creek had three quadruple winners, including Peyton Ellinghaus, who shaved more than a second from her fastest time in the 13-14 girls 100 individual medley to touch the wall in 1:15.15, then returned to chop nearly

• ASHLAND – The Randolph-Macon men’s soccer program will hold its Elite Soccer College ID Camp for rising ninth graders and older from Sunday, July 8, to Tuesday, July 10. The goal of the camp is to expose participants to multiple college programs, create an environment similar to that of the college preseason, and prepare players for their upcoming club, high school, or college seasons. Special goalkeeper training sessions will also be offered. Campers will enjoy top-notch instruction from highly qualified college, high school, and youth coaches. Check-in for overnight campers will be from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday. Check out is 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. see CAMP, pg. 24

Rain does not dampen spirits in GRAL meet By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Weather complicated the scheduled GRAL Division 5 meet between Goochland and Battlefield Green. Battlefield Green’s Ferocious Frogs were scheduled to hose the meet Friday night – and they did – but after one storm delayed the start of the meet and lightning from another storm chased everyone from the pool later that night, the teams had to scramble to save Goochland families the hour or more drive back to Mechanicsville for a resumption of the competition. In the end, it was decided that the Manta Rays would finish their events at their home pool at the Goochland YMCA, while the Ferocious Frogs would do the same at their home pool in Mechanicsville. The results would be sorted based on time afterward. “It’s not typically how GRAL likes it done, but the teams

is kind of on, because everyone is watching you.” Ellinghaus, a rising sophomore at Maggie Walker Governors School, admits hearing noise while swimming, but not being able to directly hear cheering from family and teammates. The focus, she says, is clearly on technique, and getting faster. Caitlin Stearns and Marcus Van Alstine also won four races for Bell Creek, while the Eagles were boosted to victory with quadruple winners Amanda Barnard, Karina Blanco, Avery Duke, Alex Gertner, Lindsey Hair, Cullen Harrington, Luke Harrington and Ben Nilson.

everyone was pleased with the progress their swimmers were making in the second week of the GRAL season. “We’re doing great,” Brown said. “We have a few more swimmers than we had last summer and the team’s moving along fairly well.… Right now, there’s a really tight group of high school swimmers who just want to do more, so they came out and swam last year and this year. They’re just a really tight group of kids and they wanted to come swim together.” The Manta Rays also have plenty of younger swimmers – and Brown hopes they will be able to take over now that the most experienced cadre of high school swimmers graduated this year and will age out of GRAL competition. Battlefield Green head coach Garrett Gauntt said his Dave Lawrence/The Local swimmers love to swim against Goochland’s Sasha Babic swims to victory with a 42.75 finish in the advanced division of the 11-12 boys 50-yard breaststroke on the Manta Rays. the first night of Goochland’s 705-401 win over host Battlefield Green in a Greater Richmond Aquatic League meet Wednesday. “All my swimmers get great agreed to do it that way,” said Brown. “We did that. Local teen taking talents to Texas By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com Abram Dean’s “first real thing” in terms of performing paid off earlier this year when he captured the title of Hanover Junior Idol. Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream. On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group. Debbie said she suggested Abram enter the Hanover Arts and Activities Centersponsored Idols competition because he “wants to get into this music thing, so let’s see TEEN, pg. 14 `

Young people invited to take part in ‘greatest charge of Civil War’ Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com

M

ECHANICSVILLE – This afternoon and evening will offer an unusual, family-friendly opportunity to experience one of Virginia’s most remarkable Civil War battlefields, Gaines’s Mill in Mechanicsville. The event and related programs are being hosted by the American Battlefield Trust and the National Park Service on the battle’s 156th anniversary. June 27 will offer an allages “Generations” program

are invited to share their interest in America’s past with a young person, whether that is a son, a granddaughter, a nephew, or a friend’s child. “Curiosity and passion are essential for success in the classroom and in life,” Trust President James Lighthizer said. “Who better to instill those critical attributes in a young person than the multigenerational role models already in his or her life?” Those interested are welcome to join the Trust for a short hike centered on the Battle of Gaines’s Mill, the North’s first major attempt to

“Help instill in your kids and grandkids a lifelong love for history,” said Garry Adelman, the Trust’s director of history and education. “We are going to learn how Civil War soldiers fought, and walk this ground ourselves, just as the soldiers did.” Gaines’s Mill was the largest of the 1862 Seven Days Battles waged near the gates to Richmond. It was Gen. Robert E. Lee’s first major victory of the war, as his army fended off Union Gen. George B. McClellan’s Army of the Potomac during its Peninsula Campaign to seize

by the Trust, titled “The Greatest Charge of the Civil War!”; the Park Service’s unveiling of historical markers on newly preserved battlefield land; and a park historian’s walking tour of a battle site where the Union army’s elite Irish Brigade fought. People can come for one part, or all three. In “Generations,” visitors

capture Richmond. Choose your side, drill and maneuver like a soldier, outflank the enemy, and learn about what worked and what didn’t as soldiers were pushed to their limits. Kids will get to don hats and uniforms, and can also earn a Junior Ranger patch from Richmond National Battlefield Park to take home.

the Confederate capital. The battle included what some say was the Civil War’s largest assault, which was not the more famous Pickett’s Charge that occurred at Gettysburg in July 1863. It came on June 27, 1862, when more than 40,000 Confederate soldiers led by Lee attacked outnumbered Union defenders at Gaines’s Mill.

Much of the same ground was fought over again two years later during the June 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor. That dual significance is why the Trust has been striving for years to save more acreage on the battlefield, and add it to the national park. “We are pleased to partner with our friends at the American Battlefield Trust on these programs, which highlight the significance of preservation efforts and the necessity of inspiring future generations to care for special places like Gaines’s Mill,” said Andrea DeKoter, chief of interpretation and education at Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site in Richmond. At the time, Gaines’s Mill was the second bloodiest battle in American history (after Shiloh), with 15,500 casualties, comparable to the later suffering at Cold Harbor, Chattanooga, and Fredericksburg. For the “Generations” event, attendees should park in the battlefield’s Watt House parking area, at 6283 Watt House Road off U.S. 156 near Mechanicsville. Parking for the wayside marker dedication program is located nearby at 6366 Watt House Rd. in Mechanicsville. “Generations” participants will assemble at 4:45 p.m., choose their side, and be issued uniforms and wooden muskets. From then until 6:15 p.m., they will get an introduction to Richmond’s significance to the war in 1862, and to the Seven Days Battles fought over control of the capital. Visitors will receive training in the School of the Soldier, then tour the vicinity of Boatswain’s Creek, which divided the opposing forces

in the Battle of Gaines’s Mill. Participants will follow in the footsteps of the gigantic infantry charge, learn about the fighting and some folklore, and view historic photos. Pausing at one of the national park’s cannons, National Park Service education staff will discuss the teamwork that firing a cannon required, how artillery was used in battle, the camaraderie that was essential to a military unit’s effectiveness, and the daily challenges of a soldier’s life. At 6:30 p.m., visitors can witness the dedication of new wayside RUTH exhibits at Gaines’s Mill. David Ruth, the Richmond battlefield park’s recently retired superintendent, will speak. The Park Service will unveil two illustrated wayside markers along Watt House Road, not far from the Trustowned monument to the 11th Mississippi Infantry. The interpretive markers are on an 11-acre tract added to the park after being acquired by the American Battlefield Trust in 2016. This tract and its markers serve as the new gateway to Gaines’s Mill, where all visitors are first exposed to the battlefield. The markers include a map of troop movements at that spot, and a reproduction of a combat painting created by famed historical artist Keith Rocco. A friend of the park commissioned Rocco to paint the scene for the battlefield, so people could understand the scope of the action, DeKoter

said. At 7 p.m., ranger Bert Dunkerly will lead a History at Sunset program entitled “Rearguard Action at Gaines’ Mill” that will follow in the footsteps of the Irish Brigade’s charge at the end of the battle. Participants will explore seldom-seen Park Service and private land at Turkey Hill. Parking for this tour is located at 5399 Cold Harbor Rd. in Mechanicsville. All of the events are free. The “Generations” program is open to all, but participants are encouraged to bring a young person (the ideal ages are 6 to 17) with him or her. Guardians must accompany the child they bring to the event. Everyone should have appropriate footwear, and be prepared for inclement weather. Program updates can be found on the park’s Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/ NPS. For more information, email education@battlefields. org. For directions to the “Generations” site, visit battlefields.org/events/greatestcharge-civil-war. Learn more about the Seven Days Battles at battlefields.org/learn/articles/sevendays-battles and http://www. nps.gov/rich. The American Battlefield Trust is dedicated to preserving America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educating the public about what happened there and why it matters today. The nonprofit, nonpartisan organization has protected more than 50,000 acres associated with the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War. Learn more at www.battlefields.org.
