Gill’s budget proposal includes pay hike Some county teachers could receive more than 3 percent increase in the 2019-2020 plan By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND -- Hanover County School Board members got their first look at the superintendent’s proposed 2019-2020 budget at a special meeting held Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Central Office. Dr. Michael Gill’s $194.5 million operating budget proposal contained a 3 percent across-the-board raise for school employees and an adjustment to the current teacher scale. Gov. Ralph Northam has introduced a budget that includes a 5 percent raise for Standard of Quality positions or about two-thirds of Hanover’s teachers. The proposed 3 percent increase, combined with last year’s 2 percent increase, equates to 5 percent this biennium and qualifies the county for those state funds should the Governor’s budget be

million to the funding. The adjustment to the pay scale also provides welcomed news for about onethird of Hanover teachers who are stuck in compressed pay grades. In some cases, teachers
who have years of experience do not receive any increase when moving from step to step. Gill said this is the first step in correcting that inequity, and allotted funding to
ensure there is at least $200 from one grade to another at a cost of about $200,000. This means about a third of teachers will receive more than the 3 percent raise prosee BUDGET, pg. 4

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC OF AN APPLICATION BY VIRGINIA NATURAL GAS, INC., FOR AUTHORITY TO AMEND ITS CONSERVATION AND RATEMAKING EFFICIENCY PLAN CASE NO. PUR-2018-00194 On December 17, 2018, pursuant to Chapter 25 of Title 56 of the Code of Virginia, §§ 56-600 et seq., the Rules Governing Utility Rate Applications and Annual Informational Filings of the State Corporation Commission (“Commission”), and the Commission’s April 6, 2016 Final Order issued in Case No. PUE-2015-00129, Virginia Natural Gas, Inc. (“VNG” or “Company”), by counsel, filed an application (“Application”) for authority to amend and extend its current natural gas conservation and ratemaking efficiency plan (“CARE Plan”). In its Application, the Company proposes to (1) modify the Programmable Thermostat Incentive measure to allow for differentiation between programmable and wi-fi enabled or “smart” thermostats, (2) update the items included in the do-it-yourself energy savings kit provided under the Home Energy Audit Program, and (3) make changes to the Customer Education and Outreach Program. The Company requests approval of an increase in average annual spending in the amount of $27,600 over the current annual budget for Program Year 3 (“PY3”) of the currently-approved CARE Plan. The Company represents that the average residential customer using 559 Ccf annually will see an average annual bill increase of $0.10 over the current PY3 average annual charge of $1.52. In its Application, the Company states that its only proposed modification to the Company’s Commissionapproved CARE Plan decoupling and program cost recovery mechanism, designated Rider D, is a change in the per Ccf rate cap from $0.07 to $0.09 based on the rates approved in VNG’s most recent base rate case, Case No. PUE-2016-00143. If approved by the Commission, the Company proposes to implement its amended CARE Plan effective June 1, 2019, for the three-year period ending May 31, 2022. In its Application, the Company asserts that the amended CARE Plan will have no impact on the rate design previously adopted by the Commission. The details of these and other proposals are set forth in the Company’s Application. Interested persons are encouraged to review the Company’s Application and supporting testimony and exhibits for the details of these proposals. The Commission entered an Order for Notice and Comment that, among other things, directed the Company to provide notice to the public and provided interested persons an opportunity to comment on the Company’s Application. posed by the superintendent. The system also will absorb health care cost increases for the coming year. The budget also funds numerous additional positions, including three new counselors, one behavioral specialist and two behavioral support assistants. Gill said this year’s budget is framed around three pillars of the system’s goals that include relevance, equity and innovation. “When we develop a budget, we do so through a lens of the mission of the school division through the pillars of the school division,” Gill said. “The budget that we developed is driving these major pillars of the school division.” The proposed budget continues funding for the system’s five-year technology plan, now in its third year. Last year, school officials noted the need for more mental health and behavioral support on Hanover campuses, and this year’s budget continues that commitment. Gill presented some enlightening figures that codified the increase in demand for these types of services, and his proposed budget adds personnel in that vital area, including an $800,000 increase in state funding. To accommodate these increased needs, Gill proposed a variety of new positions, including three new counselors, one behavioral specialist and two behavioral support assistants. One parttime counselor position will be upgraded to full-time under the proposal. The budget also addresses increased demands for special education, including an additional Early Childhood Special Education instructor, two autism teachers and one
toddler and infant program assistant. Gill’s proposal continues funding for the system’s fiveyear technology plan, designed to upgrade and improve online services in Hanover classrooms, eventually paving the way for the distribution of student devices next year. The plan is currently in its second year and teachers have received laptops. Terry Stone, assistant superintendent for Finance, presented a proposed five-year $78 million Capital Improvement Plan that includes funding for the John Gandy/Henry Clay replacement elementary school with construction beginning in 2023. The CIP sets aside $3 million for the purchase of land in eastern Hanover County for a future school, possibly a replacement for Lee-Davis High School. The proposal also allots $850,000 for construction of vestibules outside of 17 Hanover schools that would enhance safety and security at the sites. Visitors would enter a security area where entry was allowed through an electronic system operated from the main office. Local funding for the proposed operating budget accounts for about 47.1 percent of the revenue while the state provides about 47.9 percent. “Again we see the local portion is beginning to creep up as a piece of our total budget,” Stone said. The large majority of those funds are dedicated to salaries, and Hanover boasts the highest percentage of funds (88.7 percent) spent on classroom instruction in its 15-member division. Stone also presented the School Nutrition budget for 2019-2020 and said funding for that portion of the budget decreased 2.9 percent. The total 2019-2020 pro-
posed budget ($207.9 million) represents about a $9.2 million increase from last year’s approved document, equating to 5.1 percent. “This budget, in particular, we think is truly reflective of our priorities,” Gill said. “First and foremost, it takes care of our educators. It reflects our changing needs, especially in the areas of mental health and special education and is responsive to school safety.” Gill said the long-term facility plan also outlines a vision for the future of Hanover schools. “This is a budget that we are quite proud of,” Gill concluded. Board chair Bob Hundley said he was pleased with the budget presentation and was appreciative of the fact that Hanover is in sound enough financial shape to allow such a wide-ranging budget. “It’s exciting to see the opportunities we have,” Hundley said. “I’m very pleased with the economic position we find ourselves where we can devote additional revenues for the budget.” Hundley said that position is made possible through a positive working relationship with county government and the support of Hanover citizens. “I want to emphasize how appreciative we are of the county supervisors and the county administrator for working with us and for the local dollars they provide,” Hundley said. A public hearing was scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan.22. The school board is scheduled to take action on the proposed budget on Feb. 12. It then proceeds to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors for its approval included in its consideration of the entire county budget. Approval of that proposed budget is expected in April.

Ready or not, we’re back in the thick of an election By Melody Kinser Managing Editor

h, yes, it’s that time again. Candidate announcements are appearing on our front page as the wheels are in motion for the June 11 Primary Election in Hanover County. As always, we will publish candidate profiles and platforms, with the releases being contained in no more than 400 words. Of course, a photo may accompany the article. Our policy has been -- and will continue to be -- to provide a one-time notice of candidates’ intentions. Obviously, we encourage candidates to continue their pursuit of votes by advertising within these pages. Between The Mechanicsville Local and Ashland-Hanover Local, 44,000 homes receive the newspapers in
the county. When you consider the number of residents in those homes, we’re reaching a staggering number of citizens and voters. At this point, we have received confirmation of candidacy or announcements from Col. David R. Hines, incumbent for sheriff, Republican; Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramon E. “Trip” Chalkley III, Republican; and Faye Prichard, Ashland District; Republicans Thomas F. Giles Jr., Angela Kelly-Wiecek and Tom Walsh, Chickahominy; Republican Scott Wyatt, Cold Harbor; Republican Sean M. Davis, Henry; Republicans Ryan Hudson and W. Canova Peterson, Mechanicsville District, and Republicans Andrew David Schaeffer Jr. and Aubrey “Bucky” Stanley and Democrat Crystal Barlow Robens, Beaverdam District, Hanover County Board of Supervisors. During the Jan. 9 regular meeting of the
board of supervisors, Wayne Hazzard, South Anna District representative, told his colleagues that he had decided not to seek reelection to the seat. Republican James Munsey is a candidate for the seat. We’ve heard some will file candidacy papers to return, while at least one may set his/her sights on another office. Time will tell. Voter Registrar Teresa “Teri” Smithson, who is always accessible and so helpful, shared some valuable information about the upcoming election. Starting on Feb. 6, but no later than Feb. 26, parties may request a primary. Smithson said, “While some parties have held their meetings to determine if they will request a primary or other method of nomination, they can’t file with the Department of Elections yet.” After a Primary has been called for, the candidates can submit their paperwork
(Declaration of Candidacy with their petitions and receipt of primary filing fee) to the party chair starting at noon on March 11. Smithson also noted that Independent candidates have until June 11 to submit their paperwork to her office. The deadline to register to vote, or update an existing registration, is Monday, May 20. Those needing to vote by absentee ballot must request one be mailed to them by June 4. Smithson said her office must received it by 5 p.m. that day. Candidates for the Virginia General Assembly file at the state level. We’ll keep you updated on those too. Smithson suggested those wanting more information should visit https://www.elections. virginia.gov/candidatepac-info/candidate-bulletins/index.html. And, like the races, we’re off . . .

On Jan. 9, Gemini Advisory, a group that monitors the internet websites for exposed credit card information, notified county staff that credit card information used to make online payments through Hanover’s Central Square Click2Gov system had been compromised. A vulnerability that the county was unaware of allowed this credit card information to be taken during transactions by unauthorized individuals. The county immediately validated the claim, and isolated the Click2Gov system from public access to try to find what information had been compromised and whether the County’s system was still vulnerable. The county has been working with MS-ISAC and CERT, outside agencies that deal with information breaches, to com-
plete a full forensic analysis of what occurred. The county also is working with the software company and has built a new Click2Gov server using different software than the program that was involved in the original breach. Working with information received from Gemini Advisory the county has been able to confirm the exposure of credit card information used to make online payments with the Click2Gov system.
What information was involved The county has reason to believe that all credit card information entered into the Click2Gov system for utility and building inspection payments between approximately Aug. 1, 2018, and Jan. 9, 2019, may be at risk. This information includes customer names, credit card number, and expiration dates. Payments made over the phone and automatic withdrawals were not affected; only payments made online through the Click2Gov portal were compromised. What the county is doing Hanover County has stopped using the compromised Click2Gov server and

is working on completing a full forensic analysis. In conjunction with the software company (Central Square), county staff has built a new server and installed a new version of the Click2Gov software. This new version of the software does not contain the vulnerability that was used to obtain the credit card information.
What should you do? 1. Review any credit card and bank statements closely and report any unauthorized charges, no matter how small, to the card issuer immediately. The phone number to call is usually on the back of the payment card. 2. Ask your credit card issuer/bank to deactivate any credit card you used on the Click2Gov website during the affected time period and to issue you a new card. 3. Consider requesting a fraud alert to be placed on your credit file. A fraud alert tells creditors to contact you before they open any new accounts or change your existing accounts. You may call any of the three major credit bureaus listed below. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud

LT. MICHAEL T. TILLEY Lt. Michael T. Tilley, husband, father, son, brother, public servant, lieutenant and coach. These are words that describe a man who defined perseverance. Michael Timothy Tilley, 49, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 12, 2019, surrounded by his family, after privately battling cancer for several years. He was an amazing husband and the world’s best daddy. He recently was promoted to Lieutenant with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, where he fulfilled his
true calling as a police officer. Mike served as the sergeant of the Safe Streets Unit prior to his recent promotion and was TILLEY
renowned in the traffic safety community. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed spending time with his family and coaching his daughter’s softball team. He was loved and respected by many and

GEORGE MARTIN WILLIAMS George Martin Williams, 94, of Mechanicsville, left with the angels to meet his Lord in eternity on a beautiful Wednesday morning, January 16, 2019. He was born in St. Albans, West Virginia, on November 22, 1924. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Frederick Williams and Florence Craddock Cheatham; his wife of 54 years, Frances Fears Williams; and later his wife of nine years, Nancy Satterwhite Williams. Also deceased are his two sisters, JoAnne Graham and Linda Williams. He is survived by his daughter, Teresa “Terry” Tyson of Richmond; and son, George R. “Bobby” Williams of Ruther Glen; his brother,
John Williams (Charlein) of Grandbury, Texas; his sisters, Susanne Saddington of Chesterfield and Brenda Bundy (Tom) of Lebanon; and many loving nieces and nephews. In preschool years and during the horrible depression, he moved with his parents to Green Bay WILLIAMS to be near his grandmother, where he grew up. He graduated from high school and then was off to William & Mary College. But Uncle Sam commandingly beckoned and he was welcomed to join the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, among “The Greatest Generation.” He served in the Pacific corridor and was at
Pearl Harbor. He so loved the story of President Franklin Roosevelt honoring the troops and stopping his jeep along the roadside to salute them; George was about 20 feet from him! He returned home and partnered with his dad and they began what ended up to be his lifelong career as president of Williams Mail Service, with a fleet of trucks transporting U.S. mail throughout Virginia, and also into North Carolina, delivering it to large and small local post offices. He retired in the early 1980s and acquired two passions. He loved golf, and for years ran the Metro Senior Golf League, making many “excellent” seasoned golfers happy setting up spring/summer matches! His other passion was oil painting; there is a gallery in his home. He loved God from an early age, and attended their family church in Green Bay. He served others so humbly his entire life, spending decades in his many roles as a member and deacon at Ginter Park see OBITUARIES, pg. 13

Baptist Church, as well as other charitable organizations. He was a giver, in all things. He loved to tell real-life stories from his experiences. The twinkle in his eyes drew others and his sense of humor was contagious; people to this day love being friends with George! He was an extremely hard worker, very much the gentleman and walked with a humble spirit. He was tireless as a caretaker to all he loved, especially his wives, children, friends, employees and church. The family is so appreciative of
the loving daily care he received for three years from our loyal friend, Marian Forman. Also, we are very thankful to the angels who cared for him: Loverine, William, Mimi, Carol, Megan and the team at AT Home Care Hospice. A gathering of family and friends will take place at a service at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, January 23, 2019) at Blileys’ at 8510 Staples Mill Road in Richmond. There will be visitation afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Compassion International, making a better life for the children of the world, or to Wounded Warrior Project.

ECHANICSVILLE – Patricia Hall enjoys reminiscing about the years she spent involved with the 4-H program in Hanover County, especially after the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department started the Hanover Tomato Festival. It was during the festival that she had the opportunity to showcase her talents with the county’s favorite fruit. Thinking back to that first festival, Patricia said, “I was not prepared for anything; some of the ladies had cooked a dish to bring – tomato this or tomato that. The next year I was ready for them. We served fried green tomato turnovers, which were cooked in a big kettle on the stove and every tomato had to be peeled – green, red, purple – these were green tomatoes. She said green tomatoes were her specialty. After the peeling process, she said she would “take some nice pastry and put your cooked
substance inside, fold it over to halfmoon, seal it down with a fork, put it on your griddle, and cook it on each side. She was a staple with her green tomato turnovers for eight years at the festival. “We had a big sign over a door where we were working that said ‘Tomato
Creations.’ They stood in line half a block away, sometimes in 90-degree temperatures. Patricia’s last Tomato Festival was in 1994, but she said she so enjoyed making the green tomato turnovers, red and green tomato pies, and green tomato candy, which was a recipe from her grandmother. The green tomato candy was made by peeling the tomato, cooking it, mashing it down and mixing it with confectionary sugar and other ingredients. She said she would make little balls and dip them into a substance of chocolate coating. Due to her involvement with the Extension Office, Patricia was a fixture at the Tomato Festival for 10 years, She said she has tomato shirts and a tomato apron with the words “Tomato Lady on it. Another shirt reads “Happiness Is the Hanover County Tomato. Patricia became involved with the Hanover Tomato Festival see TOMATO, pg. 15

through the 4-H and Master Gardeners program, both were affiliated with the Extension Officer. “We had ladies doing flower arranging, gardening -- things like that,” she said. “4-H was a big thing because they were raising horses, calves, cattle, livestock and pigs. The young members of 4-H clubs “were graded on raising different animals and were in competition with one another.” Patricia took part in judging the contests, including one with cupcakes “to keep them engaged and happy.” She officially became involved with the 4-H in 1981 because of her two children. “We were raising a couple of pigs at home, and chickens and guineas, and eventually we had turkeys.” Patricia enjoyed sharing a humorous story about a pet turkey.” One morning, Sally Ann, our pet turkey -- she always went out to meet the school bus – was with them [her children] when he [her
son] stepped up on the bus. Sally Ann stepped up on the school bus -- she was going to high school. However, the bus driver noticed Sally Ann as she stepped up on the bus and she started walking down the bus because the boys all went to that way. And the girls didn’t make a peep; the girls did not scream that morning. The bus driver said, ‘Get that thing off this bus.’ ” “My son very graciously turned around and said, ‘Sally Ann, you cannot go to school today.’ She turned herself around and was going to the door; she was all upset because she couldn’t go to high school.” As the Tomato Festival continued to grow, the Black Creek VFD left the first location at the station for the grounds of Battlefield Park Elementary School. “I had been a 4-H’er when I was little,” Patricia said. “Leaders had come to her house to teach her how to can tomatoes. “I already knew; I told them that.” She also knew how to make jelly and jam. “There were six of
us children when we moved to the dairy farm and I already knew how to do those things and I raised some chickens there.” She was raised in Goochland County, where her father, Frank Plumb, managed P.N. Stoneman’s dairy farm in Cardwell. Her interaction with cows came as a child when the 34 cows from the dairy farm would follow the family to church. Patricia said they would stand outside the windows and moo when the congregation was singing. She said her father had a name for each cow. She and her husband Andrew Clayton Hall, everyone knew him as Clayton, made their home, which they built, starting in 1963, on Beatties Mill Road. She said her husband “was related to all the Halls in the area – cousins by the dozen.” Patricia, a resident of Petersburg, Florida, visited family in the Mechanicsville area during the holidays. She said she wanted to tell her story about the 4-H and the origins of the Hanover Tomato Festival because they bring back so many fond memories.

SNOW Continued from pg. 8
The anticipation of the snowstorm had exhausted all of us, and, now, it seemed that homework delays had not been the responsible choice. The thought of sledding soon turned to algebra and Latin, or that project that seemed destined to have that extra day of preparation. And, that question of school closing seemed remote as the sun set on a weekend of failed expectations and a realization that the weather and the predictions are not an exact science. The first glimmer of hope arrived later that evening with an announcement that school would begin two hours late in Henrico County. Shortly after, the snow finally began to fall and wet roads quickly became snow covered. And, finally, while writing this column, the final bit in a clump of good
news arrived, as a familiar tone on my phone announced that schools would be closed. The final episode of a four-day journey of disappointment, fatigue and, finally, redemption concluded with cheers from my children who quickly dispensed with notebooks and pencils and began looking forward to their day off. I’m not sure if my kids will ever know the pleasure of a surprise snowstorm and the magical feeling of opening the door and seeing a winter wonderland when you weren’t expecting it. But, we are left with an ample dose of anticipation and excitement that accompanies each forecasted storm, and perhaps that provide a new kind of magic of its own. “It’s supposed to snow next Sunday too,” my daughter exclaimed shortly after the closing announcement. “And they’re saying a big storm will hit on the 28th.” The cycle continues.

The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 12/10/2018, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.03% (0.03% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking, Wealth, Business Banking or Wholesale customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed. © 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. Experience gives edge in PH, C-fed wins By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Knowing they had another game to play before calling it a week, the Lee-Davis boys wanted to get a lot of players in their game against long-time rival Patrick Henry Friday night. Fortunately for them, they dominated much of the night and were able to do so. Even better, many of those substitute players held their own against the Patriots, enabling Lee-Davis to stake itself to a 68-52 victory Friday night. The tables were reversed in the girls game that opened the night. Patrick Henry led most of the night, but the Confederates put up a fight that made for an anxious night for the Patriot coaching staff – despite the 71-58 final score in favor of the visitors. While the Lee-Davis boys led throughout the game, there was no lack of drama as a mostly freshman and sophomore Patrick Henry team would crawl back within striking distance, only to fade each time in the face of a withering Confederate defense. “We played a lot of different lineups, a lot of guys who haven’t seen a lot of minutes,” said Lee-Davis head boys basketball coach Chad Bishop. “[The Patriots] played hard. They played a full 32 minutes

and didn’t quit. They were physical, and hat’s off to them, they continue to grow.” But the Confederates have been growing, too, and are enjoying their best season in many years – the first winning season for the team’s seniors. Bishop has been pleased with their growth, but he was also pleased with the way his bench performed. “I can’t say enough about the guys who came off the bench,” Bishop said. “Cody Willett who hasn’t played hardly any this season comes in and – Boom! – knocks down a 3 for us in the first half. “Bain Marsh, who’s new to the team, comes in and gets a couple rebounds, a couple foul shots, and I think he had a layup as well. Manny Booth, who has barely come off the bench this year, but we’ve been waiting and waiting to get him in, he comes in and plays seven minutes in that third quarter, six minutes in that third quarter, and did some nice things” The Confederates were led by James Wallace with 15 points and Dana Wooley with 13. Patrick Henry, led by Tysen Brown with 14 points and Jayden Mines with 12, did not led the fact that they trailed the entire game erode its fighting spirit. “I was proud of the effort,

Camaraderie powers Hawks’ win over Atlee By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – So, why does Julia Mardigian play basketball for Hanover High School? “I’m with my friends every day, and it’s just a great time.” With two friends, and fellow starters, still on the bench with injuries, it wasn’t such a great time when the Atlee Raiders opened Friday’s girls basketball showdown on an 18-4 run. But quality first-half play off the bench by Adrianna Jacobs helped Hanover survive the initial onslaught, then Mardigian took over, nailing four 3-pointers in the second half, leading the Hawks with 17 points as Hanover knocked off the Raiders 51-48. “We had opportunities to score, and we didn’t. They had opportunities to score, and they did,” noted Atlee head coach Michael Rawlings. “When the girls play Hanover, it gets their juices flowing. As the game got a little bit closer, I think nerves got to them a little bit.” The Raiders could do no

said Patrick Henry head boys basketball coach Randy Anderson. “All we can do is live and learn; fall down, get up, dust ourselves off and get ready for the next one.” The Confederate girls got off to a dismal first quarter – managing just 4 points – but scrambled to close within 2 of the leading Patriots at the end of the third quarter. But the Patriots turned up the head down the stretch to preserve their win. “They were ready to play.

They brought it to us. It was a great game. They had some big shots they made – they kept hitting 3’s on us,” said Patrick Henry head coach Phillip Cobb. “Tonight was not our best defensive performance. Just when you start getting good you hit some reality. We have some things to work on and we realize that.” In fairness, the Patriots were quite solid overall, with four players in double figures: Logan Nuckols with 22 points, followed by JaBryah Haverkamp with 17, Ava Smith with 15 and Jamie Hughes with 13. But the Confederates – with Codie Heilig and Madison
Butler tying for the team lead with 14 points apiece – are significantly improved from where they were at the start of the season. Lee-Davis head girls basketball coach Alvin Puller is happy with their growth. “That’s the best we’ve played all year,” Puller said. “The defense made the difference. We stepped in and played some great defense – team defense. A couple of times we didn’t get back to where we were supposed to be … but we’re young, and learning.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
another blow, as a Maxson triple and back-to-back Kelly Ayer baskets upped Atlee’s lead to 35-24 three minutes in. A Jessica Russell triple drew the Hawks within 6, but Aya Youssef, left open in the lane, hit a series of short jumpers putting Atlee ahead 40-30. It was time for Mardigian, who hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in the period, then another with 6:11 left to play to make it a 2-point game. Three minutes later, Mardigian fired home another triple, and Hanover had the lead at 47-44. Forty-five seconds later, Mardigian, all alone at the basket, rebounded a Madison Miller miss and scored. It was 49-44 Hawks. The Raiders drew within a point. Hanover tried to run out the clock, but committed a turnover with 19 seconds left. Emily Mott saved the day, forcing a turnover, then drawing a foul with nine seconds remaining, making both free throws for a 51-48 lead. Atlee’s gamesee HAWKS, pg. 24

Yellow Jackets don’t ease up on Randolph By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – RandolphMacon’s men’s basketball team didn’t give visiting Randolph a chance. The Yellow Jackets stung the Wildcats early and often, maintaining a nearly 2-to-1 scoring advantage for most of the game’s 40 minutes to post a 92-47 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the visitors in Crenshaw Gymnasium Saturday. While sophomore guard Buzz Anthony led RandolphMacon with 19 points and eight assists, the Yellow Jackets everincreasing advantage provided the luxury of getting as many on the team as possible significant playing time, and the players took advantage of it. Of the 12 Randolph-Macon players who entered the game, all but one scored. One of the players getting valuable time was sophomore guard Terry Woods, who finished with eight points, three rebounds and three assists in 16 minutes of play. He said the amount of playing time he gets has increased over the course of the season. “It’s gotten a lot better from the beginning of the season until now – that’s just with trust. My coaches and my teammates trust me to be on the floor, making the right plays,” Woods said. He said his role is to get the ball where it will be best used. “Just come in, take care of the ball, find guys – find guys, get them good shots – defend,” he said of his role. “Just the little things, really, things that may not show up on the stat sheet, but mean a lot.” While the younger players – including sophomore forward David Funderburg, who finished with 10 points and seven

Randolph-Macon head men’s basketball coach Josh Merkel said it was the first game in the last couple of weeks that the Yellow Jackets did not let up after halftime. “I think we’ve done it in the last three games where we’ve had some first-half leads and have not played with that same intensity coming out,” Merkel said. “It was definitely a point

tying shot failed, and the Hawks evened their record at 8-8 even without Jordan Davis and Sarah Johnson. The Raiders fell to 8-7. “I think everyone stepped up, during practice time, even the freshmen. Everyone’s stepping up, and bringing each other up,” Mardigian said when asked about the contributions
and preparation necessary to win a road game such as this. There would be no such luck, however, for the Hanover boys, as Atlee remained undefeated in county play, using big nights from Andrew Cook and Alan Williams to defeat the Hawks 74-55. Williams set the tone for Atlee (6-9), first by driving to the hoop on back-to-back possessions to put the Raiders ahead 8-0. He ended the first period with 10 as the Raiders
built a 21-10 advantage. Will Fahed, who led all scorers with 24 points, scored all 10 Hawk points in the opening stanza. Cook’s contributions helped Atlee keep its 11-point lead at halftime. Hanover’s best comeback shot came early in the second half, an And One for Fahed cutting the margin to 5 at 38-33. But Atlee scored 12 of the next 16 points, led by a trey from Nick Conway and a 3-point play from Williams. Atlee led 52-37

Hawks earn bragging rights in county quad By Jonathan Howard For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Technically speaking, there is no such thing as a Hanover County wrestling championship. Regardless, Hanover High School can claim bragging rights after going 3-0 in a quad match with Lee-Davis, Atlee and Patrick Henry on Wednesday evening. The Hawks’ night ended with a narrow win over rival Lee-Davis, which sparked celebration in the post-match locker room. “Even when things got tense, our kids were focused and they were aggressive,” Hanover head coach Jason Smith said. “They were intense, but they didn’t let it get away from them.” Hanover began the night with a 43-31 team victory over Atlee and followed with a dominating 55-6 performance against Patrick Henry. Lee-Davis started with a 65-15 victory over Patrick Henry and advanced to the final match unscathed by defeating Atlee 53-24. With the two undefeated teams set to meet, anticipation was high on both sides. “[Lee-Davis] knew how we matched up with them and they knew how they matched up with us. It didn’t take much (to get excited), and our kids wanted to be the Hanover County champs,” Smith said. “It’s a little bit of a rivalry thing. My kids wanted to win as bad as every kid over there at Hanover,” Lee-Davis coach Tanner Tinsley said. “Both of them have something to compete for, kind of a king of the county type of thing. Every school wants to win the quad every year. That’s something to be proud of.” The match started at 120 pounds, and Hanover jumped out to an early advantage that
ultimately led to the victory. Jeremiah Hunsaker started things off for Hanover with a pin, and was followed by Jordan Smith, who earned a pin at 126 pounds. The victory was one of two for Smith, who was wrestling in his first event of the season, after missing significant time due to concussion problems. “He’s a good athlete and he’s passionate about wrestling. One of the biggest things that’s helped him, is he’s been like another coach in the room,” coach Smith said about his senior. “When we’re going live he’s watching certain groups, coaching those kids up. That helps a lot for a kid mentally, picking up on things and see how moves are supposed to work.” A Noah Loving victory at 132 pounds gave Lee-Davis some momentum before Harrison Hulbert and Tristan Halsey earned back-to-back pins for Hanover at 138 and 145 pounds. From there, However, Lee-Davis dominated the match. Hanover’s Josh Epperly won the 160-pound match by technical fall, but the Confederates earned victories five victories between 152 and 285 pounds. When Hanover sent out Ryan Cowell to fight at 106 pounds, Lee-Davis had no wrestler to match. The forfeit was enough to give Hanover a victory, regardless of the final bout at 113, which was won by Lee-Davis’ Brady Bollander by technical fall. The final tally was Hanover 35-32. Following his three-win performance, Tinsley spoke highly of Bollander, a freshman. “He’s a freshman, so we’re excited for him going forward,” Tinsley said. “Brady had a large arsenal of wrestling moves. He’s very technical and methodical. It’s a lot of thinking involved and not brute strength, and his

quickness of course.” Tinsley also gave credit to senior Jeffrey Swiney who only saw one match at the 285-pound weight class. He made the most of it, pinning Hanover’s Simon Siler in the first period. “[Swiney] was itching to wrestle. He was excited. He wanted to get more matches,” Tinsley said. “On senior night, it worked out perfect. He was
focused going in. He was just hungry.” Atlee finished the night with one team win, topping Patrick Henry in the final match, 42-18. and may need help to extend its season. “We’re behind right now, so we say, let’s go one game at a time,” he said. The Raiders next travel to Lee-Davis, which will have revenge on its mind Friday, while Hanover will play host to Patrick Henry. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
