its related problem, specifically adults providing alcohol to minors.” Project Sticker Shock seeks to reach those persons 21 years of age or older who might illegally purchase alcohol and provide it to minors. Youth visited participating retailers accompanied by the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, Ashland Police Department, Hanover Cares and members from Hanover County Community Services. They placed prevention stickers on multi-packs of beer, wine coolers, and other alcohol products that might appeal to underage drinkers.
The stickers display a warning message about the penalties for purchasing or providing alcohol to minors. The project represents a partnership between youth, licensed establishments, concerned parents and community members, prevention professionals, and law enforcement with the goal of educating persons 21 and older of the underage law and raising public awareness about underage drinking. The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, through a federal grant from the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, provides funding for Project Sticker Shock.

ments needed in the school division. A lot of strides have been made in fulfilling the technology plan for HCPS (Hanover County Public Schools,” Davis said. He admits there were disappointments like the failure to solve transportation funding issues that have plagued counties throughout the Commonwealth. “Where were we unsuccessful?” Davis pondered. “I guess that would be in our attempt to get the General Assembly to properly fund the secondary

roads in Hanover. We didn't make any headway in getting those dollars back to Hanover,” he said. Davis said solutions like SmartScale have increased competition for state dollars and he questioned the priotitization of projects. “The implementation of the state’s SmartScale program means that fierce competition takes place for road dollars,” Davis said. He also takes issue with a system that relies on numbers only. “Plugging numbers into a spreadsheet to determine need is not effective,” Davis said. “I have seen bike lane con-
struction funded over roads, using the SmartScale program. I don't see a change in state funding for state roads in Hanover, the state simply won't restore the funding.” Davis attributes a portion of the board’s success to its ability to work across party lines and approach issues in a nonpartisan manner. Working with those colleagues provided some of Davis’ fondest memories during the last 12 months. “Working with the board members means you have to know your colleagues. I take an issues-based approach to serving constituents and setting policy. If you want results
you have to put politics aside,” Davis said. He cited an example when Ashland supervisor Faye Prichard approached the board with a longstanding issue in her district. “We all worked together to fix the issue in her district and the board unanimously voted to enact a permanent solution to problem,” Davis said. “You do this because it is the right thing to do. Our political beliefs don't get in the way of us doing our jobs and serving Hanover's citizens.” As Davis reflected on the past year’s highs and lows, he

Dream to become a citizen is fulfilled
| Reader Views
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
P
ride was evident as the young woman beamed in sharing the news that her younger brother had passed his citizenship test to become a naturalized American. Her delight in talking about is accomplishment and her desire to follow suit nearly brought me to tears. She is studying to become a United States citizen, and is being cheered on by her brother. “Sissy, you can do it!” he told her. The twentysomething from Cambodia has every intention of taking the test and, just like her brother, become a U.S. citizen. It was awe-inspiring to hear her talk about the process and how her brother would be taking part in the naturalization ceremony. They are pursuing the American dream of
citizenship by taking the proper steps as established by the government. They arrived legally and have maintained their status through the proper channels. This is where I’m in the grey area of the infamous Border Wall. I agree anyone wishing to come into this country should do so legally and follow the established protocols and procedures. How are so many able to illegally cross into the U.S. and set up identities and function for decades? Yeah, I’m lost by that one. For the record, I don’t agree with spending billions of dollars on a wall to separate the U.S. and Mexico. We all heard then-candidate Donald Trump vow that “Mexico will pay for the wall” during the 2016 campaign cycle. Did anyone really believe that would happen?! I am sympathetic to those teens and adults who were brought here by their parents who
never took the proper legal direction to ensure status and documentation. But, the reality is that sneaking in isn’t right or legal. I agree with these words taken from Emma Lazarus’ poem about the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” Again, the legal steps must be taken to enjoy life here as a documented resident (the young lady I spoke of earlier has a Green Card). No one should be fearful of being deported, but the right way is the only way. Take the measures to make your visit legal and, should you choose, permanent. An area college student has the enthusiasm of now being a naturalized citizen. I am eager for the day when his sister becomes one too.
Norton did what he loved -- during and after career By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist When Hank Norton first arrived in Powhatan in 1954 to coach the high school football team, the coach nor the team was well known. In fact, metro high school football was just beginning to garner big headlines and
regular match-ups between Thomas Jefferson and Highland Springs dominated the headlines. But, Norton, a young and enthusiastic coach and the Indians quickly formed a relationship and the team steadily improved under his tutelage. It was a different game back then,

but Hank Norton had ideas that seemed well ahead of his time, coupled with an old-fashioned belief that what didn’t kill you made you better. The young coach bought the first set of weights for his players at Powhatan, and believed that the toughest players would always prevail.

Let’s demand a floor vote for ERA now This past Tuesday, Jan. 22, Republican delegates tried to kill the Equal Rights Amendment with a 4-2 vote in subcommittee. This action was both unAmerican and anti-democratic. The ERA is supported by more than 80% of all Virginians and passed with bipartisan support two weeks before that in the State Senate. It would pass with bipartisan support in the House as well were it allowed to the floor. Like many popular issues, such as sensible gun control and unbiased redistricting, nefarious Republican politicians beholden to their rightwing donors stop legislation like the ERA in subcommittee because they’d be embarrassed to vote against it in public. The Republicans’ strategy is simple and twofold: 1. Assign malleable Republicans like our own Hyland Fowler of Hanover –no buddy of democracy — from safe districts to subcommittees where they vote to stop popular legislation. The red flag law passed in many states that allows law enforcement officers to temporarily take weapons from suicidal citizens was killed in subcommittee using this method a couple of weeks ago, and 2. Keep their conservative supporters scared, angry, and misinformed about the effects of passing progressive legislation. In the past two weeks state politicians have told their supporters that the ERA would result in their freshman daughter being randomly assigned a male roommate, and that women would no longer get child support and social security survivor benefits. see LETTERS, pg. 8

NORTON Continued from pg. 6
My friend told me that he wanted to quit after each of his first practices and a signature of Norton’s workouts was a tenacious effort to take his players to the brink. “He thought it would pay off at game time,” my friend said. “We thought he was trying to kill us.” Back in those days, football cleats were not available in stores or catalogs, and salesmen peddled them usually from the trunk of a car. “It was a big deal for us,” his former player said. “They cost around 10 bucks — if I remember — that was a lot of money in those days. Once you bought the shoes, Coach Norton knew he had you.” My friend was only one of thousands touched by Hank Norton. “He made men out of all of us,” one of them told a reporter when he passed away last month at 91 years old. In a life that today seems to move as quickly as the internet, it often takes a number of jobs and career changes to get through a working life and rarely does someone end up
retiring at the same place they began their career. After coaching at Powhatan for six seasons and recording a 40-16-3 record, the Marshall University graduate moved on to head a fledgling football program at a small school called Ferrum Junior College. The campus not only offered Norton an opportunity to pursue his first love on the gridiron shaping young lives, but the nearby streams and rivers provided the perfect setting for his second love, fly fishing. Norton’s impact on Ferrum, today a four-year college, is legendary and earned him a spot in Virginia’s Sports Hall of Fame. His record speaks for itself. During his tenure, the school won four national championships and a regular participant in the playoffs for the years Norton roamed the sidelines. The players who endured those tough practices, 42 of them going on to play professional sports, point to Norton as a major influence and mentor in their successful lives. Although I had friends who played for Norton at Ferrum, I never met him until long after he retired
in 1993. Norton was working as a fishing guide in Deltaville, displaying the same enthusiasm for his second career as he displayed for years in his first. And after 29 seasons of winning football at Ferrum, five of them featuring unbeaten teams, Norton seemed equally happy spending time on or near the water. He once told a reporter, “I never felt like I was going to work. I looked forward to getting up every morning,” regarding his years at Ferrum where he amassed a 244-93-14 record that includes four junior college national championships. Norton, a Huntington, West Virginia, native, lived out his final years doing what he loved, fly fishing and making a lasting impression on the many he encountered on those docks in Deltaville. He passed quietly earlier this month at age 91, but his impact on the many who played for or just encountered Norton is significant and lasting. It’s a legacy that will last more than just a lifetime.
LETTERS Continued from pg. 6
Lies, of course, but they never let truth get in the way of a good scare tactic. The public is waking up to this cynical strategy. We see more Progressives elected and more women seeking office. Morgan Goodman, for example, is running for the seat Hyland Fowler currently occupies. Scrutiny like this vote is getting makes it harder for politicians to vote against the public’s best interest. Some say that the ERA is unnecessary or that we already have equality, so an amendment is not needed. But even though Thomas Jefferson knew that some truths were self-evident and James Madison that certain rights were unalienable, they still wrote those truths and rights down and our founders still made them the law of the land, enshrined in our Constitution. And we need do that for Equal Rights as well. The Supreme Court denied Lilly Ledbetter hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid wages, which she would have received were she a man because she did not complain within 180 days of the first time Goodyear cheated her! And she worked there
for 19 years. Inequality and bias protected by technicality at the Supreme Court. Anthony Scalia actually said the Constitution does not prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender. Is this the America that Republicans want? The ERA would leave no doubt in any justice’s mind that equality is a right that may not negated by legislation nor denied by an employer. After a quarter of a millennium of both patience and struggle, it is well past time for equal pay and equal rights for women, for all of us. There are a lot of us fighting for the ERA, we’re paying attention, and we vote. Our legislators must take a stand on the ERA. Demand a floor vote on the Equal Rights Amendment in the Virginia House of Delegates now by contacting your representative and letting him or her know that we will work to replace any delegate that stops the ERA. You can find your delegate’s phone number here: https://whosmy. virginiageneralassembly.gov. It’s time to step up, reach out, and let your delegate know how to vote on the Equal Rights Amendment. L-DHS is the first high school in the region, and one of only 59 schools in the state, to receive this honor. The RAMP designation recognizes schools that are committed to delivering an exemplary comprehensive school counseling program and encourages school counselors nationwide to strive for excellence. Honorees are awarded for aligning their program with criteria outlined in the ASCA National Model — a framework for a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling so all students can achieve success.

Charles Stevens, L-DHS principal, said, “All the credit goes to our school counseling team for their dedicated efforts in collecting data and implementing the appropriate strategies to enhance the educational experiences of our students.”
I also want to commend Mrs. Cole for her leadership in pursuing RAMP. We could not be prouder!” Stevens added. Karla Allen, coordinator of Counseling Services, praised the effort. “I am so proud of our school counseling team for all of the time and energy they invested into achieving this status, as well as implementing a comprehensive counseling program to provide equitable and relevant learning experiences for our students.” L-DHS will be honored at a recognition ceremony at ASCA’s annual conference in Boston, Massachusetts in July for making an exemplary commitment to comprehensive school counseling programs. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. recalled the night a county firefighter had been killed in an accident. “In 2019 we had great highs and deep lows. I remember the night we lost Lt. tion,” he said. “Folks were so happy to be back to work.” He credited fellow board member Bucky Stanley for doing the heavy lifting required to reopen the facility. “We cannot underestimate the amount of work Mr. Stanley poured into this project,” Davis said. “As we walked through the facility people were constantly thanking him for his help. There is no doubt that these folks love Bucky and they know Bucky loves them.” Although his term as chair has ended, Davis said the work continues. He said he envisions a busy year for supervisors on the horizon. “I am still very concerned about the lack of state funding
that returns to the local level, particularly for roads. This is the constant concern of any local policymaker,” Davis said. He also cited continuing his efforts to address important issues like public safety. Davis also said preparation for Hanover’s 300th birthday celebration slated for 2020 will continue. “We are preparing for a year-long celebration, with many events, through the entire year of 2020.” But, it’s not the only anniversary celebration on the Davis schedule. He and his wife Lisa celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in June of 2019. They have two daughters in college and a son who is
a senior at Hanover High School. Although Davis has not officially declared regarding his re-election plans, it seems probable he will seek another term as the Henry District representative. “I think many folks know that I have been encouraged to run for re-election. I truly believe this is because I respond to my constituents and take up their issues, no matter what the issue might be,” he said. He said the support he has enjoyed will be a key factor in that decision. “When you have tremendous leaders like Sheriff [Col. David R.] Hines and [Commonwealth’s Attorney]
Mechanicsville Local, Jan. 30, 2019, pages 6 and 8]. Hanover County’s new tax system, presumably well intended, has caused considerable angst and confusion among many Hanover County residents. Bad timing before the upcoming elections. Did I ever get any notice of forthcoming change, and what to expect? No. Was there ever any pilot test that tried out the new system
for glitches, before implementing it countywide? None that I am aware of. Is there a division of taxing duties between Hanover County’s Board of Supervisors versus the Commissioner of the Revenue? Apparently. Are the valuation methods used for setting the processing fees legal? Not that I know of. Did this problemsome implementation result in even more taxes-paid staff time,
and postage costs, for the Commissioner to explain the new tax scheme reasoning, and then revise tax assessments? Apparently. Did it peeve the Ashland town clerk into testy defensiveness when I went there and asked for explanation of my getting double-billed when I am not even a town resident? Definitely! Donald E. New footprint planned for Ashland Strawberry Faire By Lorie Foley Special to The Local
A
SHLAND – The Ashland Strawberry Faire has been a community tradition since 1982 and has seen its share of challenges, including construction on the campus of Randolph-Macon College. “Although the footprint has had many changes through the years, we’ve always been amazed at the opportunities it affords us,” said Sharon Chidsey, president of the Ashland Strawberry Faire Board of Directors. Randolph-Macon College is preparing for a new nursing program on campus, which trans-
lates to the construction of a new instructional building on Caroline Street. In addition, there are plans to expand Blackwell Auditorium and the performing arts program. What does this mean to the Ashland Strawberry Faire in 2019? The new footprint provides an exciting new venue. Most arts and crafts vendors will stay on Henry Street, but the Food Court, “Hanover in Action” Pavilion, Kid Zone and the BARKing Lot will move north and northeast. The official performance stage will move by the dorm at the fountain plaza (the staging see FAIRE, pg. 31

Public considers town’s revised CIP projects By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND -- After three work sessions regarding the Town of Ashland’s proposed 2020-2024 Capital Improvement Plan, the public had its first opportunity to weigh in on the list of options and projects for the next five years at Tuesday’s regular meeting. When Assistant Town Manager Matt Reynal first
introduced the list of priorities in early January, there were differences in the three versions, one from the Planning Commission, one from staff, and one representing the board’s wish list for upcoming projects. After discussion, council approved an amended list in its last meeting of the month and finalized the list for a public airing at Tuesday’s meeting. Reynal said the revised list
included few changes from the ones noted in previous discussions. “The top priority level ones are still the same projects you identified as priorities the last go-round,” Reynal told council. “The main difference is those first three projects -- fiber network, downtown sidewalks, and comprehensive storm water management -- are all tied with the same score.” The drainage improvement
plan moved above strategic property acquisition on the top five priority list, and overhead utilities fell out of the level two priority list after the adjustments. Also included in the priority two list were: downtown parking; trails and parkways; overhead utilities; railroad crossing upgrades; and townwide drainage improvements. “I certainly see the value

Instruments will be deployed in place to measure seismic activity, heat flow from the interior, and to search for subtle changes in Mars’ rotation and wobble. OSIRIS-REx (a clumsy acronym for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith eXplorer) arrived in orbit around the small asteroid Bennu on 3 December. On two earlier flyby
approaches the mass of the asteroid was determined so it could be properly placed in orbit. This is the lowest mass object for which NASA has achieved a stable orbit. The spacecraft was launched in September of 2016. By the way, the “Security” piece of the mission is to hopefully learn enough to help defend Earth should an asteroid impact be predicted. The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Ziggy, 539770, is a 5-month-old male domestic short-haired feline. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Mr. Ziggy is a cool character. He has a very friendly demeanor. Ziggy has a mixture of playful energy and calmness. He loves to run and play with his cat toys. He also does not miss the chance to lay and observe. Ziggy also does well around other cats. He will make a super addition for anyone looking for a younger cat. Petey, 527764, is a 1½-year-old male neutered pitbull. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Petey has been a patient dog. He has been in the shelter for almost five months now. Petey really would love to find a forever home. He is an active dog, who loves to run and play. Petey would be perfect for an active owner. He can go for long runs or walks. Petey also is good with people and other dogs. He will fit right in with any household. Please consider coming to the shelter and meeting him! distant object to studied by space craft. The small Kuiper Belt object dubbed “Ultima Thuleâ€? is only about 20 miles across, and New Horizons zipped by at about 30,000 miles per hour at a distance of only 2,000 miles. You may recall the 2015 flyby of Pluto. This is another billion miles out! Telemetry confirmation of the success took six and a half hours to reach us at the speed of light. Because of the distance, data transmission is slow – it will take over a year to download the complete results of the flyby. Two days later, on 3 January, the Chinese space agency successfully landed a probe on the far side of the Moon (not the dark side!). Chang’e 4 has deployed a small rover called Yutu 2 (Jade Rabbit 2), which is actually the spare rover for Chang’e 3, which landed on the near side of the Moon in December 2013. Both lander and rover are solar powered, so they have to “hibernateâ€? during the two week long lunar night. Since radio signals cannot reach there from here directly, they have placed a relay satellite (called Queqiao) in a “halo orbitâ€? at the L1 libration point beyond the Moon. I’ll have more to say about orbital libration points next month. Lunar phases for February: New Moon on the 4th, at 4:04 p.m.; First Quarter on the 12th, at 5:26 p.m.; Full Moon on the 19th, at 10:54 a.m.
(the Moon is also at perigee, so expect higher than average tides); Last Quarter on the 26th, at 6:28 a.m. All times are Eastern Standard. Mercury is visible to the southwest after sunset starting mid-month. Mars sets around 11 p.m., look for it to the south-southeast after evening twilight. Early risers will have more luck with planets. Jupiter rises at 3 am, Venus at 4, Saturn at 5. Times are for around mid-February viewing. Our mid-month view, about two hours after sunset, finds the constellation Auriga closest to zenith, with its brightest star Capella about 10 degrees to the east-northeast. Turning to the south, it will be hard to miss Orion’s familiar asterism. Sirius is that bright star to the left of Orion. Castor and Pollux, in Gemini, are high to the east. Below them we see Leo (the Lion), marked by its brightest star, Regulus. At this time, we can find the Big Dipper in Ursa Major to the northeast, appearing to “stand on its tailâ€? – conversely, to the north we see Ursa Minor “hanging from its tail.â€? The familiar tilted W of Cassiopeia is to the northwest. Turning again to face southwest, you’ll see the bright star Aldebaran marking the constellation Taurus (the Bull). A bit below and more to the west lies the familiar asterism of the Pleiades. in adding more VDOT-funded (Virginia Department of Transportation) projects in our priorities. I’m a little dismayed that we did lose overhead utilities because when we are moving forward with England Street that is the time to deal with it,” council member Kathy Abbott said.

area used for the Bluemont Concert Series in the past). Visitors will enjoy music from Hanover Idols Jason Call and Madison Cox, as well as several bands throughout the day and the traditional “Youth Strawberry Pageant.” The Faire is accepting applications for arts and crafts, business, nonprofit and government vendors now. It offers business sponsorships with excellent visibility and promotional opportunities.
She said some of the VDOTfunded projects would go forward without the top level priority, while overhead utilities required the board’s special attention when prioritizing. “I guess I’m making the point that something like overhead utilities we have to prioritize or it’s not going to happen.” Council member John Hodges said he supports
underground utilities but voted against prioritizing it until he viewed a plan for the England Street revamp and if that contained plans for underground utilities. “I didn’t support it because I figured we would learn more as a result of the plan,” he said. “It’s a huge cost and I get your point. If you don’t start putting money in, it’s less likely to be more trau-
matic to put in at a later date.” Abbott said she couldn’t imagine those overhead utilities remaining in any revitalization plans for England Street. “I have a feeling that the recommendation will be to bury or move them,” she said. Reynal suggested coupling the underground utilities project with sidewalk curbs and gutters requiring that utilities
be buried when possible. Town Manager Josh Farrar explained that Downtown Sidewalks and the England Street Streetscape are essentially one in the same, and overhead utilities are addressed in that project’s scope. Council member George Spagna asked if the name should be changed to Downtown Streetscape to better describe
the scope of the project. Council reached consensus on the name change and approved the revised list to be considered at Tuesday’s meeting at a public hearing. Mayor Steve Trivett said that list will be considered but does not exclude other projects from being funded or pursued. “It doesn’t mean we won’t
The Faire gives back to the community by awarding 10 local scholarships each year. “In 2018, the board offered $6,000 in scholarship funds to graduating seniors from Hanover County Public Schools, and one in honor of former Mayor Dick Gillis, to a Randolph-Macon College student majoring in political science” Betty LaPlace, director of Scholarships, said. The Faire also supports many community nonprofits. Nonprofit organizations are
offered free booth spaces for visibility, or for sales ($25 administrative fee or two hours volunteering to set-up for the Faire). In addition, all commercial food vendors that participate each year are required to sponsor and give a percentage of profits to a non-profit of their choice. In recent years, the Faire has contributed funds to nonprofit groups in a Grantfor-Work program in trade for their volunteer hours running the Faire (i.e. setup, cleanup, vendor and/or visitor sup-
port). In 2018, the Faire awarded $5,600 in Grants-for-Work to area nonprofits. Grants-for-Work also are offered for working the games
in the Kid Zone. All profits from the Kid Zone are donated to Comfort Zone Camps. For more information, visit www.AshlandStrawberryFaire.
com and ashlandvakiwanis. org. Both the Ashland Strawberry Faire and the Ashland Kiwanis Club are 501(c)(3) organizations.

Lee-Davis wrestlers grab Region 5B title By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor CHESTERFIELD – Going into the championship round of the Region 5B wrestling championships at Matoaca High School Saturday afternoon, LeeDavis had a solid 20-point lead over the Confederates’ closest competitors. Those two competitors, however, were locked in the battle of the day. J.R. Tucker and Mills Godwin were tied, but the Tigers – with four wrestlers in the championship round – had the advantage. Barring disaster, neither of the secondplace teams could overtake LeeDavis, nor would the Eagles be likely to edge Tucker. No disaster happened. LeeDavis held on to its 20 point lead for the win and the Tigers edged Mills Godwin by 2 points for second place. “We were in a little bit of danger coming into the finals matches,” said Lee-Davis head wrestling coach Tanner Tinsley. “We had more finalists than anyone else – we had six finalists. Basically we just couldn’t have all of our guys lose and all Tucker or Mills Godwin kids win. It would have had to have gone really bad for us.” It almost did go really bad for Lee-Davis. The first Confederate to step up to the championship mat – Brady Bollander at 113 pounds

Right, Lee-Davis’ Noah Loving is appropriately pleased with himself after his hard-fought 3-2 decision over Mills Godwin’s Garrett Chandler in their battle in the 132-pound championship round match.
– lost a vigorously contested match to Highland Springs’ Bennie Jones. Bollander seemed to be in control, but over-extended himself and got off balance, a mistake which Jones took advantage of to get a pin in 3:08. The next Confederate up, Noah Loving at 132 pounds, was in another dogfight, barely edg-
ing Godwin’s Garrett Chandler in a 3-2 decision. The next LeeDavis wrestler up, Grant Sulser at 152 pounds, fell to the other Eagle in the Championship round: Charlie Stanton won a 3-1 decision in that match. Varina’s Antonio Cetrone then claimed a 5-3 decision over Confederate Jacob Whittington for the 182-pound title.
But two-time state champion Andy Aldridge gave the Confederates some insurance, dominating Hermitage’s Emanuel Torres with a pin in 1:28. Finally, in the last LeeDavis match of the day, Dylan Montgomery experienced a similar fate as Bollander had in the first Confederate match
of the championship round. Montgomery battled Tucker’s Dominic Barton for the 195pound title. The match was hard-fought, and Montgomery seemed to be in control, but went a little too far on a shot and Barton struck for the pin in 3:16. Barton’s victory was the only one for the Tigers in the cham-
pionship round, without it, they would not have finished as runners up. “They were evenly matched. I really felt that,” J.R. Tucker head wrestling coach Kevin Mable. “But [Barton] is really strong – kind of a beast – and he’s a great kid and it went his way. It was a good thing for us.” Atlee placed three in the championship round, two of whom finished as champions. Of those, one was no surprise: Defending state champion Evan Buchanan pinned Matoaca’s Nickolas Garcia in 1:57 for the 126-pound title. A lifetime of grappling with bigger brothers – including two former Atlee wrestlers, Gene and Brick Haynie – prepared sophomore J.B. Haynie for his first region title, which he won with a 11-2 major decision over

C-fed boys grind out big win over Hanover By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – After entering a late-season swoon that seemed set to cast a shadow over the Lee-Davis boys basketball team stellar season, some observers wondered if the Confederates had yet learned to win. But, after a 51-50 win on the road at Douglas Freeman last Wednesday and a 69-63 home win over county rival Hanover Friday, it seems Lee-Davis has figured it out. The Confederates definitely figured it out after nearly going scoreless in the third quarter while Hanover took the lead. “Hanover’s coming off four straight wins. Freeman is 14-5 and sitting very pretty in the 5B regional playoffs, so to go on the road over [at Freeman] and pick up a 1-point win, and then to come over hear and really just get smacked in the mouth in the third quarter – I didn’t know if we were going to score … – to get really smacked in the third quarter and then to come out and just fight and fight and fight … I’m really impressed with the progression of these guys,” said Lee-Davis head boys basketball coach Chad Bishop. “They just made a team effort and a team commitment that we weren’t going to quit.” Even better, they avoided late mistakes – like turnovers – that have cost them dearly in both of their games against Atlee and their first game against Hanover this year. But Lee-Davis could not win without drama. The Confederates went nearly six minutes in the third quarter before making any kind of basket. As they appeared to founder, Bishop sought relief from the bench, and the two players called up – Bain Marsh and

Robert Fraley – gave Lee-Davis quality minutes with no turnovers and some key points in a pair of 3-pointers by Marsh. “I told them in the locker room, ‘Guys, we didn’t score in the third quarter until you guys came in and started doing what you were supposed to do,” Bishop said. It was an especially sweet performance by Bain. “The interesting piece is that Bain went to Hanover his freshman year and he’s now come

over here to us. He’s been in the back of my mind for this game for a while. The opportunity came up where we weren’t doing things we needed to do and we went to him,” Bishop said. “He’s got a lot of confidence. He’s only a junior and I’m excited about what we saw out of him tonight.” Marsh, with a pair of big 3-point goals early in the fourth quarter, played a key role in a stretch where both teams matched the other’s from long
range, but Hanover missed a few shots while Lee-Davis kept its keel even to overtake and pull away from the Hawks. Both teams had a trio of players in double figures. Hanover was led the Hawks with a game-high 19 points, followed by Will Fahed with 14 and Cole Wallace with 11. Devin Christian led LeeDavis with 18 points. James Wallace scored 15 points and Tyler Berry added 12. Hanover, led by Julia Mardigian with 13 points, won the girls game that opened the evening 55-43. The second quarter, in which the Hawks outscored Lee-Davis 19-9, proved pivotal to the Hanover win. “When we got [Lee-Davis’ Codie] Heilig in foul trouble there and they had to take her out of the game, I think we did a real good job of attacking their weak spot – a much better job than we had been doing on offense, getting good shots and moving the ball,” said Hanover head girls basketball coach Mike Rohr. “We actually made a couple [of shots] today. … I thought we did a really good job of attacking the basket and getting inside.” Madison Miller scored 11 points for the Hawks and Emily Mott added 10.

UNC star finds vocation representing soccer By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Now that she’s graduate from the University of North Carolina, goalkeeper Samantha Leshnak hopes to continue her competitive women’s soccer career at the professional level. But, during her senior seasons with the Tar Heels, she began to realize she has a deeper calling within the sport: that of ambassador. Leshnak, whose stingy defense – which included a 1,119-minute, 23-second scoreless streak from Aug. 22 to Nov. 4 – helped lead North Carolina to the NCAA Division I championship game, showed she has what it takes to handle a diplomatic portfolio for the sport when she came to Mechanicsville to lead a goalkeeping camp in conjunction with the Richmond Goalkeeping Academy. “Somewhere, during my senior season at UNC, there was a switch that turned in me and nothing was about me anymore,” Leshnak said. “It was no longer Sam the soccer player. … It was no longer, ‘How can I improve? How can I? How can I? How can I?’ But it was all about ‘How can we?’ and ‘What can I do for them?’ – them meaning my teammates, meaning the underclassmen, them meaning the fans.” The notion that she was a role model began to change from an intellectual platitude to a deeply felt motivation. “There were a number of little girls that would always go to the games and always make sure that they talked to me,” Leshnak said. “I do think that I was an ambassador for the sport this past 2018 and it changed me.” That realization drove her

as with C.B.’s parents and White about how best to work with the guest of honor. C.B. worked on blocking, kicking, challenging Leshnak on breakways – and, especially, diving for the ball. to say yes when Richmond Goalkeeper Academy founder Amanda Forester approached her about conducting a camp in the area. When both learned about Challenger Soccer, a ministry of Cool Spring Baptist Church that helps children with special needs, Leshnak and Forester took the camp idea one step further: they organized a 1-on1 class for C.B. Price, a 12-yearold on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum who is uncomfortable in large groups,
but who is an unapologetic punster in small ones. A small crowd consisting of Leshnak, Forester, Ashley White of Challenger Sports, C.B.’s parents – Brad and Stacey Price – and a few helpers gathered on a spongy playing field at Mechanicsville’s WashingtonHenry Elementary School Sunday morning for C.B.’s lesson. Leshnak and Forester had done their homework, consulting others about how to work with special needs kids as well
In fact, C.B., who could be spotted with big smiles every time he rolled on the ground after leaping for the ball, said that diving was the best part of the day. He also showed he thought like a goalkeeper when
Leshnak charged the net. “What I did was, I looked at what direction her leg was going, then I looked at the ball, then I knew where the ball would go,” C.B. said. He didn’t make every save – sometimes the ball would go out of reach, and experience goalkeepers know all too well – but he was undaunted. He challenged Leshnak to give him her best shots. When the lesson ended, C.B. and his parents headed to the playground – he had plenty of energy left to spend. Leshnak, Forester and the others began to prepare for the Sunday campers to arrive. And Leshnak – who will soon attend a couple of professional training camps, first with the Carolina Courage and then with the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League – felt justified in her diplomatic mission. She said she was amazed by C.B. “It surprised me, definitely,” Leshnak said. “At first, I was taking it slow, but every time he achieved something, had some success, I was like, ‘OK. Lets’ keep moving. Let’s keep moving.’ And he improved. He got everything and had some wit to him. I was really impressed with him.”

County swim teams prepare for region meets By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – The regular season in high school swimming is over. All eyes are on Friday, when Patrick Henry and Hanover compete at the Region 4B championships, while Atlee and Lee-Davis face off in the Region 5B championships. Both meets will be held at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Richmond. For Patrick Henry, there’s an interesting mix of urgency for a large senior class, and an emerging youth movement. The boys edged Lee-Davis Wednesday in a dual meet 88-81, while the Lee-Davis girls were victorious 83-70. Paul Davotech earned his best time in the boys 100-yard butterfly, winning in 1:00.97, while Mark Dinger scored a personal best in the 50 freestyle in 23.38, placing second to Brendan Farrar of Lee-Davis, who won in 23.12.
