Regional website to aid in opioid fight By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HENRICO -- “We need all of you to be part of the solution,” Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney said, referring to the opioid epidemic at a press conference held Thursday afternoon at the Henrico County Government Center. The gathering was sched-

uled to announce a regional effort to combat the ongoing problem. By some estimates, drug overdose deaths in America exceed the number of people killed on our country’s roadways annually, and Stoney said Jim Ridolphi for The Local that six overdose deaths had Canova Peterson, left, chairman of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, joined with already been reported in his Tyrone Nelson, Henrico County BOS chairman; Leslie Haley, Chesterfield County BOS chairwoman; and Mayor Levar Stoney, City of Richmond; in announcing a website to help in see OPIOID, pg. 12 the battle of opioid abuse in the region. ASHLAND -- Virginia recently expanded its government health insurance coverage. This year’s General Assembly voted to add up to 400,000 individuals to Medicaid. Sometimes those skeletons just fall out By Melody Kinser Managing Editor

H

aunted. That seems to be an apt term to describe what has been taking place in our state the last couple of weeks. First it was Gov. Ralph Northam, then Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax with Attorney General Mark Herring following. I guess there is no running from the past. Who among us strictly adhered to the principles and behaviors instilled by our parents? Let’s place that question in the rhetorical folder. However, what Northam and Herring have encountered is a whole other realm of “Huhoh!” moments. OK, I was not raised in Virginia, so I can’t say that some of these alleged actions weren’t considered acceptable at the time in the communities in which they lived. For the record, they never have been and never will be all right with me.

I had heard stories about minstrel shows coming to my hometown with men performing in black face. That was before my time as the old saying goes. Nonetheless, it was not appropriate then and it isn’t now. So, let’s take a look at our own pasts and actions that our parents would have frowned upon and punished us for if they learned about them. I was raised in a Christian home, but didn’t exactly stay on the righteous path during my teen years. But there was nothing my friends or I did that compares to ridiculing someone’s race or any other aspect of people. “Incomprehensible!” was the first word to cross my mind when news broke on Friday, Feb. 1, about Northam and the blackface photo in his college yearbook. On the heels of that controversy came claims that Fairfax had been less than a gentleman in two sexual encounters, one which he claims was consensual. the word assault is

being used in reporting the allegations. Next stop was Herring admitting he had put on blackface when he was in college. I was in college before these elected officials and I guarantee our shenanigans mostly involved partying as 18 was the legal drinking age. I have no memory of anyone ever demeaning another over race, religious preference, etc. There is a lot to be said about growing up in a diverse area. Now we’re at a crossroads in the commonwealth as skeletons seem to be pouring out of closets. I suggest if you’re a public official you step up before the digging begins into your past. My question to you: How much influence does something someone did decades ago have on your opinion of them today? Yes, damage has been done and I am still saddened that this negative spotlight has been placed on our state. Let’s hope we can recover soon and move forward.

Back to the neighborhood By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist I am part of generation that didn’t grow up watching Mr. Rogers on television, but I’ve heard that familiar theme song what seems like thousands of times. Like many parents, I listened more than saw Mr. Rogers as my children sat and seemed magically enchanted by a man who spoke in simple monotones that contained a message that had a magical appeal to the target audience: children. Millions of Americans will be reintroduced to Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood this month in the form of a documentary entitled “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” set to air on HBO and PBS. The documentary, released last year, earned more than $22 million at the box office, an almost unheard-of return in that category. In recent years, Mr. Rogers has received well-deserved credit for his approach to raising and inspiring children, an approach that included recognizing the unique nature and value of each child. Mr. Rogers embraced diversity, and emphasized the importance of inclusion and self worth. His style led some to doubt his sincerity, judging his delivery too good to be true, and a sense of niceness that made them feel uneasy. But, those closest to Mr. Rogers recall a man that changed little on or off the set, and the genuine belief in goodness extended into everything the trained minister did. The celebration of Fred Rogers stands in stark contrast to the current state of American culture, where rage and confrontation prevail in almost see BACK, pg. 8

every form of media. That level of confrontation is exactly the atmosphere Mr. Rogers spent a lifetime trying to remove, at least in the normal daily routines of our children. Although the delivery wasn’t polished or television friendly, the sincerity of the message and the honesty of the man in the zippered sweater made the words important. Looking back, some would

of trust and respect. I suppose it all led me to question how Fred Rogers would fit in today’s meanspirited social media scene, or how he would respond to the constant back and forth by our nation’s most prominent leaders. Perhaps we could all use a little more friendliness in our neighborhoods and a dose of cringe-worthy overly-corny lessons might benefit all. And maybe if we all viewed the world through the eyes of a child similar to the method

employed by Mr. Rogers, the world would be more amicable and all of our neighborhoods might be more forgiving and less combative. It’s clear that Mr. Rogers’ impact will be felt for generations, and his message has value even in today’s atmosphere of confrontation and conflict. So, relax and take a final ride on that rickety old red trolley for a run down memory lane, and enjoy a few final moments in Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.

How quick you were to judge concerning the Covington Catholic High School boys and the incident with the Native American protester in Washington, D.C., after the Jan. 18 March for Life Rally! This shocking incident caught my attention the day it aired. I needed more information because the 15-second videos left me questioning what really was going on. In the two weeks since the event, new facts have been revealed that disprove much of your interpretation. Nathan Phillips, the Native American elder, who has not been truthful about his military service, is a well-known protester as Wikipedia shows. Longer videos show that Nicholas Sandmann was not being disrespectful; it was Phillips who approached the young men and stood uncomfortably close to them. They

showed no disrespect to the group of Black Hebrew Israelites who were spewing hate speech to everyone around them and trying to incite anger; the young men chose to move away from them. Your inaccurate article, insinuations, and hasty assumption about guilt and innocence are appalling. Your readers deserve a truthful account and an apology. Elaine Mulvehill Mechanicsville

loud!” all over the place. Now we Virginians have witnessed an abhorrent action by our own (Democrat) governor. It now seems that Trump isn’t enough; Northam had to ruin the trust given to him by countless Virginians who voted for him. It doesn’t matter who the people in the picture in his year book page are. The fact they’re there is the problem. Why didn’t he divulge this early in his political tenure? Why didn’t the Democrat Dommittee do their homework/research on the background of this man? Besides the feelings of his black supporters/constituents; he also has compromised the entire Democratic Party. It’s bad enough illustrating that Trump is an avowed racist. How can we go forward as united when we now have this? Resign, Ralph.

Then allow Justin Fairfax to carry the torch of freedom/ equality/justice/unity and democracy. We don’t need a hypocritical leader when we already have Trump. A Fairfax ascension is exactly the shot-in-the-arm the Dems need. Free up Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax because the time is now and your (Northam) time is over. To stay on would dilute the Dems’ message of unity and only give fodder to the Trump Republicans. Now that revelations on Fairfax and Attorney General Mark Herring have come to light and with Speaker of the House Kirk Cox as next in line the original source of the story (right wing “big league”) we should all watch arduously at the implied Republican endrun Hail Mary. marvel at how a man with Mr. Rogers’ philosophy and unapologetic dedication to love and unity could survive for decades in an industry that often discards those with the best of intentions. A group effort by Chesterfield, Henrico and Hanover counties and the City of Richmond called OpioidsolutionsRVA.com seeks to gather resources, explore prevention methods, and educate the public regarding a problem that knows no magisterial boundaries. Elected officials from the four jurisdictions unveiled a new website that makes resources available at one site, but also links to individual sites that offer more detail on local options. Department of Health determined that a website connecting all citizens of the Metro Richmond area to important information and resources would be helpful in fighting this crisis,” Peterson told the group of elected officials, law enforcement and health care officials. “We believed that by developing a shared central website we could pool our resources

and focus on our shared opioid problems,” Peterson said. The website is structured around four vital categories to combat or prevent opioid abuse. They include education, prevention, treatment, and recovery. Peterson said the final website design reflects the mutual desire of all four regions to provide as much information and resources to those suffering from opioid addition. Coupled with television and social media spots, the campaign is designed to provide a central gathering point for treatment, prevention and recovery resources. “In the end, we ended up with a product that makes us proud,” Peterson said. “The webiste OpioidSolutionsRVA. com makes it easy for residents from our region to find news and resources that are specific to the place where they live and events that near their homes.” He also explained the need for a regional approach regardsee OPIOID, pg. 15

Guests should dress to impress: “Hollywood Bling” attire is encouraged. Tickets are $35 and include one drink ticket,

light hors d’oeuvres and endless popcorn. Sunday’s grand opening celebration is the culmination of a weekend centered on celebrating independent and award-winning films. Additional events include: 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 -- Documentary Screening & Filmmaker Q&A. Filmmaker and Ashland native Matt Green will speak before a screening of his documentary “The World Before Your Feet.” Executive produced by Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg, “The World Before Your Feet” is a tribute to an endlessly fascinating city and the freedom to be found, wherever you live, in simply taking a walk. Individuals also may submit special “memories” and personal photos of the Ashland Musical Variety Show that will be published in the program. Proceeds from the memories and sponsorships will

directly benefit the nonprofit Center, which has relied on the variety show for funding for the past 37 years. Ad prices will vary depending on size and placement within the program.

ing this national epidemic. “Regardless of our street address or zip code, we are all residents of the Richmond region,” Peterson said. “The development of this website and this initiative has been regional cooperation at its best. We are all in this together.” Ivy Sager, Hanover County Community Services Board president, agreed and, said, although the problem might appear different in Richmond, the addiction and the cause are the same, and learning how other communities deal with the problem assists officials with dealing with local addictive communities. “The drug is the same,” she said. “This gives us an opportunity to help our community know there is a place that can help start the recovery process.” Sager also endorsed the regional approach employed to combat the problem. “Drug addiction knows no boundaries. This gets all of our com-

munities in the conversation. We realize our boundary lines cannot keep us safe from these drugs. This program allows us to work and strategize together.” Henrico County Board of Supervisors chairman Tyrone

“The development of this website and this inititiative has been regional cooperation at its best. We are all in this together.” CANOVA PETERSON Hanover County Board of Supervisors

Nelson said the combined metro area effort makes sense when combating an epidemic such as the opioid crisis. “Opioid use and addiction are major problems in the entire RVA region. These powerful drugs are destroying lives and affecting every group and demographic,”

of Supervisors chairman Leslie Haley echoed those sentiments and said there are no easy or quick-fix solutions. “Our county’s opioid problem has been years in the making and it won’t be solved overnight,” Haley said. Stoney said this regional approach offers the best hope to affect those addicted and

change lives. “RVA cares deeply about its residents and knows their health and happiness are essential to our region’s prosperity and success,” the mayor said. “By uniting in OpioidSolutionsRVA, Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico and Richmond are harnessing their collective talents and resources to save and repair lives.” Funding for the OpioidSolutionsRVA project was provided by a grant from the Commonwealth’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. Stoney said the program takes steps to combat a problem that affects all of our metro communities. “We are not in the business of just working day-today in operational aspects of government, but we are also in the business of saving lives,” he said. “Working as one region, we can make that happen.”

Citadel awards gold stars to Lane Johnson for excellence Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com

C

HARLESTON, South Carolina -- Lane T. Johnson, a 2018 graduate of Lee-Davis High School, is among the honored cadets recognized for their academic and physical achievements during the fall 2018 semester at The Citadel. He earned a 4.0 grade point average and was formally recognized for a top 3 physical training score within his battalion. Gold stars are awarded to cadets at The

Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, who achieved a 3.7 grade point average or higher and they become a prestigious addition to the uniform. Cadets and students who achieve gold star recognition also are placed on The Citadel’s dean’s list. The Citadel offers rigorous academic programs through its 16 academic departments that are organized into five schools. Lane is a computer science major with an emphasis in cyber security. He also is a member of The Citadel Air

Force ROTC Detachment 765. The Citadel has a long and proud tradition of educating principled leaders in all walks of life. The Air Force ROTC Detachment 765 supports this tradition as Lane pursues a commission as an officer in the United States Air Force. Lane was a successful runner for Lee-Davis and recently completed his first season as a top performer on The Citadel cross country team. He is currently competing for the Bulldogs in track and field as he works towards participating in Recognition Day at the end of March.

Recognition Day is a momentous occasion in the life of a “knob”, the term for a first-year cadet at The Citadel. It means the end of rigid formations, constantly walking in single file at an unusually fast pace, and the highly regimented way of life that is The Citadel’s FourthClass System, considered to be among the toughest college military training systems in the country. Recognition day will include what is known as “The Gauntlet” where cadets endure intense physical and mental challenges for hours.

After these grueling activities, cadets are called onto the checkered floors of their barracks and perform more pushups as they listen in silent exhaustion for a message from the Regimental Commander. If successful, Lane will be notified over the loud speaker that the Fourth-Class system is no longer in effect and he can then be recognized by his first name by all upperclassmen and welcomed into the Corps of Cadets. This special day will be the culmination of the rigid discipline Lane has endured throughout knob year.

LANE JOHNSON The festivities will conclude with a full dress parade march from The Citadel campus along the banks of the Ashley River to Marion Square in historic downtown Charleston.

The play uses the term “bucket” to represent how to express kindness and appreciation towards others. Students learn how to carry on healthy relationships and spread happiness through the play. “The True Story of Pocahontas” will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23. With an emphasis on historical facts, Pocahontas is revealed as a strong-minded, playful young girl who changes her world before she will change her beliefs. Join Pocahontas on her amazing journey and see how courage and determination can change the world. Popcorn, snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.

Every day he plays with his animal friends until one day Amos becomes sick and needs some cheering up. The animals decide together what to do to return the favor. “Stuart Little,” a lovable mouse that goes on big adventures despite his little size, follows on Saturday, April 20. Although he looks different from the other members of his family, Stuart proves throughout the play that he is no less than the other members of the Little family. “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” will be presented on Saturday, Sept. 21. This fun-filled musical demonstrates the benefits of having a thoughtful and positive outlook on things. 6 PM

Defense drives final rivalry night victories By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Defense is more than just stopping your opponent from scoring. At its core, defense is about disrupting the scoring plans of your opponent as efficiently as possible. On Hanover County’s final “Rivalry Night” of the 2018-19 high school basketball season Friday night, both the Patrick Henry girls and Atlee boys presented clinics on how to play effective, disruptive defense. The plans led both to victories. For one team it may have clinched a top seed in their region, while for the other it may have been too little, too late. The girls kicked off the doubleheader as Patrick Henry and Atlee entered with a combined 31 wins. The Raiders needed a victory to ensure holding the eighth and final playoff berth in Region 5B, while the Patriots looked to seize the No. 1 seed in Region 4B – which means home court throughout the tournament – which begins Friday. In the end, Patrick Henry is the team that got its wish fulfilled, as the Patriots defeated Atlee 39-24. The Patriots’ play in the first half was matched by the Raiders, who enjoyed a small lead for most of the first quar-

Patrick Henry made up for it and more in a second-half defensive masterpiece, extending suffocating man-to-man defense as far as 32 feet from the basket, looking to deny the simplest of passes. Atlee never fully launched its offense from then on. Aya Youssef, who led the Raiders with 8 points, was never allowed her sweet spot near the free throw line where her jump shot is almost automatic. And, because of the pressure, when the Raiders got a chance to score, they went cold. In the second half, Atlee only scored 6 points. “We’ve been up and down a little bit in our defense, but tonight, we definitely played one of our best defensive games all season,” said Patriots head coach Phillip Cobb. “It’s great timing.” Contributions were across the board. JaBryah Haverkamp, who officially committed to Roanoke College Wednesday, led with 12 points. ‘Close’ word of day in Region 4B track meet By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor WOODBERRY FOREST, Va. – The word of the day was “close.” In the Region 4B Indoor Track and Field Championships at Woodberry Forest School Saturday, the largest margin of victory was 6.5 points. Midlothian – long a dominant force in track and field in the Region – held off a strong Louisa County team by 6 points, 139-133, to claim the Region 4B girls championship, while Courtland’s boys stiff-armed a determined Dinwiddie team by a comparatively luxurious 6.5 points, 92-85.5, for the Region 4B girls title. It was a day that, as the event announcer pointed out, drove home the lesson that every point counted. The Trojan girls have just one senior, Erin Babashak – who won the triple jump – and two juniors, so they had to rely upon a host of freshmen and sophomores to handle what often proved high-pressure situations. “The majority of the team is 10th graders with a couple of ninth graders in there,” said Midlothian head track and field coach Stan Morgan. “These girls have stepped up.” Among the ones who stepped up were sophomore Dasia Hardy, who finished second in the 55-meter dash and third in the 300, and Caroline Bowe, who finished second in the 500 run, took a 15-minute break, then got back on the track to win the 1,000 run. “That was an unbelievable effort,” Morgan said. He praised the Trojans’ spirit. “They all contributed big,” Morgan said. “That’s why it’s a team effort. I’m really proud of

Jordan Harvey, Sidney Chesley and Olivia Dumville. Rachel Crytser won the girls 1,600 run, and Kayvon Bagby won the girls 55 hurdles. On the boys side, Hanover’s Joey Badalamenti won the boys bole vault and Cole Myers won the 1,000 run despite feeling the hot breath of defeat on the back of his neck. Myers led most of the race, but down the stretch, a pair of challengers almost caught up to him. When he realized what he was hearing – their footsteps – he shifted gears and found enough juice to pull away in the final 10 meters of the stretch. “I knew they were back there. I didn’t know how far away they were, though,” Myers said. “I heard them coming up behind me. I knew I had to turn it on, so I gave it everything I had.” The Virginia High School League Class 4 state championships will be held at Roanoke Dave Lawrence/The Local College in Salem on Friday, Feb. Morgan said it was the 11th regional title in 14 years for the Trojan girls. The two Hanover County representatives finished among the top five girls teams: Hanover was third with 85.5 points and Patrick Henry fourth with 46.5. The Patriot boys, helped by wins in the 800 relay and shot put, likewise finished fourth. Patriot senior Tony Ford was a member of the winning 800 relay team. But Patrick Henry head coach Scott Brown said Ford’s 55-meter win was quite a surprise. Ford agreed.

best would have had him in seventh place in the region, which is worth only 2 points for the team. Finishing fourth gave the team 5 points instead. Hanover head coach Rich Firth had hoped his Hawks would have done better, but they got off to a sluggish start. “We just didn’t do as well in the field events as we hoped to do,” Firth said. “That put us in a big hole early. But the running events, it looks like we’ve done about as well as we could.” The Hawks finished with five champions. Makenzie

Jaguars slink past Springers for region title By Zach Joachim Richmond Times-Dispatch GLEN ALLEN – L.C. Bird’s Jacob Plummer captured a pivotal 8 points for his team with a hard-fought second-place finish in the boys 3,200 meters, the penultimate event of the Region 5B indoor track and field championships at Glen Allen High School Thursday night. Going into the race, Highland Springs held a 1-point advantage in the boys team standings. The Springers did not have a runner in the 3,200, so Plumber’s performance gave the Skyhawks a 7-point lead they would not relinquish. Bird and Highland Springs finished first and second, respectively, in the evening’s final event, the 4x400-meter relay. The difference between the teams was just over a second, an appropriate final margin between two teams that jockeyed back-and-forth at the top of the boys standings all night. The Skyhawks came out on top with 97 points to the Springers’ 88. Atlee’s boys were third with 72 points. Lee-Davis finished eighth with 31. But a mishap somewhat

was named the boys field athlete of the meet for his first-place performance in the long jump. Deep Run’s Colby Burcham and Prince George’s Javonte Harding were co-runners of the meet. Harding won the 55-meter dash with a meet-record time of 6.38 seconds, while Burcham won the 1,600 meters in 4:16.65, also a meet record. The Raiders had two winners. Kameron Helmlinger won the 1,000 run with a time of 2:32.27. John Duegaw won the pole vault with a 14-foot effort. Glen Allen stole the show on the girls’ side, finishing with 102 points. Highland Springs came in second with 77. The host and repeat champion Jaguars were seeded second behind the Springers going into the evening, but coach Matt Walton said a collective effort put his girls over the top. “Our girls stepped up. They ran so impressive, I’m very proud to coach these young Nick Liberante for The Local ladies, it’s just an honor to see Lee-Davis senior Lauren Taylor jumps 17 feet, 1.5 inches in the long jump, good enough for second place in the Region 5B indoor how well they performed,” track and field championships at Glen Allen High School Thursday. Powhatan outpaces all in Region 4B wrestling By Nick Vandeloecht Richmond Suburban News

Hanover’s Josh Epperly goes for the pin against Chancellor’s Mike Kreider in the Region 4B wrestling semifinals at Powhatan High School Saturday. Epperly would go on to win the 160-pound regional title by injury default.

POWHATAN – They spun wildly in circles, with both wrestlers trying to win the advantage in the final match of the Region 4B tournament. J.D. McMillin got there first. The Powhatan senior took Eastern View’s Dillon Werth – the same wrestler who defeated him for the state title last year – down to the mat. The move gave McMillin two points, and

the lead. He never let it go. Using a reversal, an escape and a near-fall to pull away, McMillin fended off a penalty, a takedown and a reversal to defeat Werth by a 7-5 decision and repeat as regional champion. “I really knew that if I kept my mind straight and that I was focused on this match the right way I should’ve been, then I was gonna come out on top,” McMillin said. “Overall I’m

gonna bring the same intensity from this week to next week to states, because this is my last year; I’m gonna finish out on top.” McMillin’s victory capped a regionals competition that saw Powhatan win three individual titles and reach five finals matches. Overall, Powhatan had eight wrestlers qualify for the Class 4 state tournament. The Indians as a team placed second to Eastern View in the region.

“Next week we’ll figure out what we’ve got to do to get some more kids on the podium; last year we had four state placers which was a decent year…trying to do a little better there,” said Powhatan head wrestling coach Jonathan Tanaka. “I feel like we’re in a really good spot; we’re wrestling really well. Everybody’s healthy as we’re gonna be at this point.” Powhatan sophomore see POWHATAN, pg. 23

Monacan boys winner, claiming the title in the 200 freestyle. While the Hawks did not come away with another region title, Hanover head coach George Massey was happy with the result.

“We had many best times across the board. I can’t complain about how we swam tonight,” Massey said. “Kids were dropping up to 18 seconds on times, 500 freestyles in particular. But even the 200s. We

had a girl drop 10 seconds on the 200 IM. I couldn’t predict any of this. They came in, it’s their last swim, and they just go for it.” Ethan Spencer led Patrick Henry’s continent, amassing 32 points with third-place finishes in the 200 individual medley, the 100 breaststroke, and as part of the 200 medley relay (with Paul Datovech, Aidan Fraser, and Mark Dinger) and a fourthplace finish in the 200 freestyle relay (with Datovech, Dinger and Ronny Maier). But the Patriots as a whole did well, dropping two minutes off their collective times. “We walked in today with one person knowing they were going to states and walked out with six in more than six events,” said Patrick Henry head coach Bob Flanagan. “It was great.” The Virginia High School League Class 4 state championships will be held at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center Friday. It only went half the distance, but it was still fun,” said Epperly, who is enjoying what he added is his “best season by far.” Dinwiddie junior D’Anta Johnson, in his return to wres-

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – Last year, Monacan’s girls edged King George by just 19 points for their first Region 4B swimming championship. This year, the Chiefs showed the Foxes and everyone who was boss. Monacan was nearly 200 points ahead of King George, the nearest competitor, with 500 points to the Foxes’ 301. The two teams were followed by Hanover (257) and Midlothian (248). Courtland rounded out the top five with 214.5 points. It was the second-straight region title for the Chief girls in just Monacan’s second year of VHSL competition. Chiefs head coach Mark Van Deren said the key to their success is a combination of skill and depth. “We have some very good swimmers and we’re very, very deep,” Van Deren said. “We have some superstars, but we also have some girls that are just really solid swimmers growing in the sport.” Six Monacan swimmers won six individual events: Jessie Wallin in the 200-yard freestyle, Shannah Dillman in the 200 individual medley, Kayla Hobson in the 100 butterfly, Allison Pickels in the 100 freestyle, Paige Strycker in the 500 freestyle and Kelsey Peel in the 100 backstroke. Peel and Pickels combined for two more wins as part of the 200 medley relay team (with Dillman) and 200 freestyle relay team (with Wallin). Tamara Wheater got the only win for King George in the 50 freestyle. The other two victories went to Midlothian’s Caroline Gray (100 breaststroke) and Hanover’s 400 freestyle relay team of Natalie Culley, Caroline Blaser, Claire Grant and Delaney Childs.

Patrick Henry’s Ethan Spencer (right) and Courtland’s Tyler Lowe battle for position in the boys 100-yard breaststroke in the Region 4B swim championships at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center Friday. Spencer edged Lowe for third place.

The boys meet was much closer, and the victory went to another Chesterfield team, Midlothian, with Monacan close behind. The Trojans scored 424 points to the Chiefs’ 390. Hanover and Patrick Henry were third, and fourth with 331 and 228 points, respectively. King George rounded out the top five with 185. Neither of the top two boys teams had numerical dominance. While Midlothian’s top performers did as hoped, it was the contributions of the Trojans’ other swimmers that gave them the edge over Monacan. “It’s every points counts, and everybody swam their hardest tonight,” said Midlothian head swimming coach Gene Bryson. “We had people dropping three and four seconds off the times they had coming in, so it was just a great job by the entire team. Of course, we have our No. 1 guys, but we had a great effort by everybody.” Samuel McKey was the main winner for the Trojans, with vic-

tories in the 50 and 100 freestyles and as part of Midlothian’s first-place 200 freestyle relay team (with Matt Duren, Caleb Smietana and Alexi Gentz). Smietana also won the 100 breaststroke. The performances of the Chiefs’ supporting cast had to be huge, for Monacan had more winners – including in the remaining two relays. Ryan Polino and Abel Buell had two individual wins apiece, Polino in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and Buell in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle. Polino contributed two other wins and Buell to one other. Polino was part of the Chiefs’ champion 200 medley relay team (with Marc Macomson, Tim Higgins and Xavier Raymondson). Both Polino and Buell were part of the winning 400 freestyle relay team (with Macomson and Landon Ellis). Hanover’s Luke Daley was the only non-Midlothian or

His teammate Sean Hall, who had come back from a shoulder injury at the beginning of the season and had to wrestle up from his preferred 113 weight class, opened the finals on a 6-5 win by decision over Eastern View’s Johnny Laird in the 126-pound match. “I was really nervous; I didn’t know how it was gonna go,” Hall said. “But I just felt good in the moment.” Tanaka was pleased. “Really proud of Sean Hall,

Lee-Davis’ Brendan Farrar won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. For Farrar, his success was far from guaranteed as the week preceding the meet had been difficult. “I was feeling a little tired today. Practice has been pretty hard this week,” he said. “But we had been gearing up for fourth in the 100 butterfly and championship season. Patrick Henry will have a bye to the Region 4B quarterfinal round, and will host on Feb. 20. For the Atlee boys, another defensive performance yielded another victory, now winners of

seven straight thanks to a 57-38 Senior Night win over Patrick Henry. The Patriots frustratingly fell to 0-21 with the defeat. Senior Jayce Catterton sparked the Raiders, scoring 5 quick points to begin play, while senior Donnie Oliver scored all 8 of his points in the first half as Atlee (12-9) built a 31-17 intermission lead. The play, and attitude, of Oliver, is a microcosm of the mindset it has taken for the

soaring on the way to leading the Raiders with 16 points, and you have the makings of a team that would be a dangerous firstround out in the postseason, should they make it. The Raiders have spent the week frantically trying to catch Matoaca for the eighth and final bid in Region 5B. The Warriors, with late-week wins over Hopewell and Colonial Heights, hope that work is enough to keep Atlee at bay. Playoffs or not, as his second

season winds down at Atlee, Axselle is exceedingly proud of the work of his young men, who, because of key early season injuries, found themselves playing from behind the entire way. “We were 5-9 and they could have easily jumped ship,” Axselle explained. “They kept fighting. They knew the potential was there, buckled down, and our defense has been great.” Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – Douglas Freeman made it look easy. The Rebels dominated the field in Region 5B swim championships Friday at Collegiate School Aquatic Center, swamping the competition in sweeping the boys and girls team championships. Their closest margin of victory was in the girls competition by a mere 95 points, 406-311 over second place Mills Godwin. Deep Run was in a distant third place with 272 points, followed by J.R. Tucker with 252 points and Atlee with 221. In the boys race, Douglas Freeman nearly doubled the score of second-place J.R. Tucker 446-231. Mills Godwin was third with 206 points, followed by Matoaca (182 points) and Atlee (180). Douglas Freeman’s success – in its three years of VHSL competition – is the result of a tremendous feeder system driven by year-round and seasonal club swimmers. “All four years I’ve been here we’ve had a great team,” said Freeman senior Reid Hutcherson, who won the boys 200-yard freestyle and who anchored the Rebels’ winning
