ECHANICSVILLE – Four community members considered outstanding by Hanover Habitat for Humanity will be honored at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, at the inaugural Hanover HERO (Helping Encourage Real Opportunities) luncheon at Honeymeadows Clubhouse in Mechanicsville. They are: Tim Amos, Jimmy Comer, Sue Forbes Watson and Teresa Mueller. Amanda Gunter, director of Community Engagement for Habitat, said, “The program was established to recognize extraordinary individuals for significant professional, civic and/or philanthropic achievements. Our HEROs are communityminded and passionate honorees who are each challenged to raise a minimum of $5,000, during a fundraising campaign (now through Tuesday, March 12) helping deserving families in our neighborhood with a real opportunity to build strength and stability through shelter.” “We ask our honorees to raise $5,000,” she continued. “The honoree that raises the most funds will be named Hanover’s Superhero! The average construction cost of a Hanover Habitat home is $100,000 (not including land and infrastructure costs). Five thousand dollars could provide the funding for a number of construction components such as the roof
costs, partial costs for the foundation, the costs for windows and doors, or even the electrical costs.” The four honorees have until March 12 to complete the challenge. Money can be donated online at www. hanoverhfh.org/HanoverHERO or sent via mail to Hanover Habitat administrative offices at 9161 Atlee Rd., Suite B Mechanicsville, VA 23116. Those wishing to attend the celebration may purchase tickets online at www.hanoverhfh.org/herolunch or by calling the office at 804-569-6108.

Edelman’s charitable act inspires Balducci to shave for a good cause By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ECHANICSVILLE – An episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” inspired SmartWire 360 owner Dennis Balducci to literally shave for a charity. As a matter of fact, as, he said, his mustache of 35 years, “went South.” Early last month, Julian Edelman, the New England Patriots wide receiver who was named the MVP (Most Valuable Player) in Super Bowl LIII, allowed DeGeneres to shave his beard, which was described as being bushy and like that of a mountain man. The football star accepted DeGeneres’ challenge for the shave and matched her $10,000

Vaccinating children shouldn’t be an issue
| Reader Views
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
N
o, I am not a mother but I’ve lived long enough to realize the hazards parents who I’d like to believe are doing what they consider best for their children are in reality exposing them to very dangerous diseases. In other words, get your kids vaccinated. A niece is a registered nurse studying to become a nurse practitioner. But, more important, she is a mother to two young sons, ages 6 and 2. And she is a strong advocate for vaccinations, posting her support often on social media. Just last week a high school senior from Ohio appeared before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions about how misinformation about vaccinations are being
spread on social media. Not only did 18-year-old Ethan Lindenberger get vaccinated against his mother’s wishes, he went viral with a Reddit post about not having been fully vaccinated because of her convictions. The teen said his mom would accept social media posts at face value rather than responsible sources like the Centers for Disease Control. My memories of being vaccinated are vague (it’s been a really long time), but I do remember having to show proof of having had the injections before entering elementary school. I remember how our family physician administered the smallpox vaccine. There remains a faint scar from that injection. Through the years, and without hesitation, I’ve gotten vaccines for whatever strain of disease was making the rounds -- globally or nation-
ally. And, thankfully, I’ve never suffered any side effects. As for infants and young children, how can a parent not turn to those in the medical world who are the authorities on such issues? If there are concerns, seek direction from legitimate sources -- for the sake of your kids. Recent outbreaks of measles, which is a preventable disease, prompted the Senate hearing. Last year, at the tender age of 62, I was vaccinated for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap). I had requested it as a precautionary measure because I couldn’t remember when I’d last had a tetanus shot. I’m not an expert on parenting (far from it, no experience), but I hope mothers and fathers will check with knowledgeable sources about vaccinating their kids.
What a world! Confrontation becomes the norm By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Looking for a kinder gentler nation? Good luck! At least, that’s the line we are constantly fed about a population that is losing its softer edge, more willing to confront than compromise, and often not willing to listen to the opposing point of view. And watching the national politi-
cal passion play on television might lead one to assume that some of those observations are accurate. In that arena, it certainly seems the gloves are off and a no-holds approach is clearly the chosen path, often disregarding what could result from common sense thinking or reasonable conversation. I suppose the real question is how are things on the street. Have we digressed to a society that has no

patience, no compassion, no understanding of the plight of our fellow men and women? I’m not buying it. I certainly won’t argue that the pressures of living in 21st Century America can cause a degree of anxiety, and handling the daily pressures affects us all differently. And, there is evidence that those stresses are finding their way into our daily activities, and confrontation seems more
prevalent. For example, last week the claws came out in an incident in Alabama where two customers were arrested after a fistfight broke out over crab legs. Both were in the buffet line waiting for a replenished supply of the tasty treasure to be delivered. A policeman explained the group see NORM, pg. 8

Teacher explains why phone use in class is a problem The history of the phone is a wondrous one. From the first phone invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 to today’s number one pick, the Galaxy Note 9, people have relied on the phone for simple communication to an unlimited amount of applications available presently. The fact is that smart phones are a fixture in today’s society and are not going anywhere. However, there is an issue with these devices that I believe needs to be addressed. How can we teach our children to use smart phones effectively and at appropriate times? As an educator for over 28 years, I have seen no phones in school to over 90% of students bringing them to class every day. Although some teachers use them for educational purposes, the majority of use during the school day is social media, watching videos, and communicating with friends and family members. These uses have decreased student attention in the classroom tremendously. And when confronted about it, some excuses are “I had to look up something” or “I am just texting my mother.” Unfortunately, no matter how important the reason may seem to the student, those brief distractions add up to many minutes taken away from valuable instruction. It also has led to a lot of aggravating confrontations that disrupts a class and, at a higher rate, lower grades for the students. So, what’s the answer? I really don’t think there is an easy one, but it will take all of us together to work on it. Parents, please explain to your child that the phone is a tool during the day and not an entertainment center. Also remember that when you see LETTERS, pg. 8

He is the founder of the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation, and usually headlines the field of celebrity guests for the local classic. With a plan in place to shave his electricians’ beards, Dennis decided to contact Joe, “who is really involved in the golf classic. Without him, it wouldn’t get off the ground. The classic, played at the Brandermill Country Club in Midlothian, provides an
opportunity for participants to golf with celebrities. Anywhere from 75 to 80 – mostly football players – take part. When they finally came out, it’s very heated — especially if someone is taking more than their fair share,” said Huntsville police officer Gerald Johnson in a New York Post story. sword fight using tongs usually reserved for retrieving the cause of the ruckus. One combatant was charged with disorderly conduct and the other was arrested on an assault charge. Now, I certainly would not take this isolated incident as clear indication our edges are hardening and we are becoming a less forgiving nation. It probably says more about the popularity of crab legs than it does about a decaying society. But, I saw something the other day that made me reconsider. While waiting in a long line at the grocery store, the adjoining checkout line opened.
You’ve been there. There was an instant race to the recently opened line, and, as usual, the folks who have been in line the longest found themselves at the end of a newly formed line. Also routine, none of us said a word like “Why don’t you take the next person in line?” or “You weren’t next” to the two or three who benefited from faster feet and an oblivious sense of fairness. All except for one elderly lady who moved the slowest as she made her way to the front of the newly opened line. “I think I was next in line,” she said. The bigger, faster custom-
ers who had made their way to the front cleared a way for her and she assumed her welldeserved place at the head of the line. I later pondered if her actions were a sign of our dismayed society and our decreasing ability to show patience and compassion, or if it was a signal that people are more willing to stand up for themselves. In any case, she was my hero of the day, and it was a small sign that justice is alive and well. And, what about civility? It’s still around. Town invests $1.5 mil in pool Council approves increase in admission for first time in 10 years By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND -- When the Carter Park Pool opens in May, Ashland residents will be treated to a number of improvements resulting from a $1.5 million renovation. Unfortunately, they also will be greeted by increased admission rates for the first time in 10 years. Town Manager Josh Farrar told Ashland Town Council on Tuesday, March 5, that the increase is long overdue and will assist the town with operating costs for the community pool. While Ashland provides the pool memberships as a service to its residents and rates compare favorably with other pool options in the area, Farrar said that recouping 60 to 70 percent of those operating expenses is an operational goal. Last year, the Carter Park Pool collected about 53 percent
of operating costs. “Our costs that our revenues have covered have substantially decreased over the years,” Farrar said. “We want to try to run it to cover as many costs as we can, but we are ultimately in the field of government service and making sure people can get access to the amenities we provide.” The 20 percent increase in memberships and daily passes compensates for the many years when increases were not sought. Council also approved a plan that would raise those rates 2 percent each year to avoid any future “sticker shock.” A current family membership is $190 and would increase to $230 under the new rate structure. Weekday and weekend admission will increase by $1 to $5 and $8, respectively “Our rates have not been updated since 2008,” Farrar said. “Since then, we’ve been
reluctant to raise rates with an aging pool with the idea that membership was something we were striving for, but increased rates might pull that membership down.” Membership sales will begin April 1 at a discounted rate and regular prices take effect May 1. Farrar said that prompts

Actions of what seems to be a desperate man The recent “Lynching comments by Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax shows a man that isn’t interesting in clearing his name, but rather shows a man so desperate that he has stooped to the lowest levels
to prey upon people’s sympathies rather than asking for a fair and open investigation into claims by two black ladies that he sexually abused and/ or raped. Those claims should be investigated to the fullest, in order to clear any dark cloud that now hovers over his political career and dispelled. But, should the ladies’ claims prove to be valid, Mr. Fairfax should do the honorable thing and resign. Is Mr. Fairfax afraid of the truth? He shouldn’t be if, “The truth is on my (his) side as he claims. Mr. Fairfax by playing the “Lynching card showed he is not a man willing to clear himself by due process and that he’s a weak man without shame or character. Buddy Cousins Ashland

residents to act early and not wait until the last minute to purchase passes, resulting in delays at Ashland Town Hall the day before the pool opens. “Typically, the day before the pool opens is a disaster in our office,” Farrar said. “We tried to figure a way to provide incentives people to get that purchasing done early to take a little bit of weight off of staff.” Prices are reduced by about half midway through the pool season, and there also are discounts available for caregivers and daycare students and staff. Farrar said the 20 percent across-the-board increase is warranted and necessary. “The total dollar amounts are not all that substantial when you consider a 10-year time period since we’ve last increased.” Staff also recommended

guidelines. “It’s important for those who don’t have as much to be able to participate in our services,” Farrar said. “We wanted to find ways to encompass more people and get more people involved.” Council member Daniel McGraw said increases were expected when the renovation plans were announced. Council member Kathleen Abbott expressed a desire for additional outreach programs to attract more residents to use the pool. Programs like learn to swim could enhance those efforts. Future partnerships with
and national level athletes featured. A program about the display will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, in the meeting room of the Mechanicsville Library. Many of the local athletes featured in this year's display will be present to speak and meet the community. All are welcome.
organizations like the YMCA also could expand those programs. Council has budget work sessions scheduled for March 12 and 26; both are open to the public beginning at 6 p.m. Departmental budgets will be presented during those meetings, and Farrar will unveil the proposed budget in April. Mayor Steve Trivett told fellow council members that a plan to create a Railroad Park is in the discussion stages. “The Railroad Park is an initiative that Main Street has put support behind,” Trivett said.
The plan envisions various walking stations throughout downtown that would feature various forms of railroad memorabilia. For example, a freight car wheel assembly or a coupling are possible artifacts that could be utilized. “My general thought is that council is supportive of the project but we don’t have enough detail yet,” Trivett said. Trivett urged the community to get involved in the planning stages and stressed the importance of that input in the park’s future as well as all upcoming issues including the budget and ongoing branding discussions.

Randolph-Macon cannot crack Garnet Swarthmore ends Jackets’ NCAA run By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor AMHERST, Mass. – For a while in the first half, RandolphMacon looked unstoppable, but the Garnet of Swarthmore proved as hard as a rock. After the Yellow Jackets had built up a 16-point lead midway through the first half, the Garnet started a slow and steady comeback that culminated in a 3-point goal by Conor Harkins with 7.2 seconds left to send Swarthmore on to the Amherst Sectional final with a 58-57 victory Friday and end RandolphMacon’s season at 27-4. “It’s been such a special group, we didn’t want [the season] to end. We wanted to keep on playing,” said RandolphMacon head men’s basketball coach Josh Merkel. “I’ve never been a part of as special a group as this one. … I’m so proud of our kids in the fight. I think we can walk with our heads up and have nothing to be ashamed of.” Merkel credited the performance of Swarthmore, which went on to defeat Nicholls 69-65 in the sectional final Saturday to
reach the Division III final four. The Garnet will face another Virginia team – Christopher Newport – in a semifinal Friday at 6 p.m. “You’ve got to tip your hat and give all the credit to Swarthmore. They’re a great team with great players,” Merkel said. “They stayed in the fight. We stayed in the fight. It came down to … almost, who had the ball last.” The Yellow Jackets were led by senior forward Darryl Williams, who had a doubledouble (his second) with 23 points (a game- and careerhigh) and 10 rebounds. He was 5-of-9 from 3-point range. “I thought we had a great season. Swarthmore’s a really good team,” Williams said. “It really sucks for me and the seniors right now – it didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but we did give it all we had for 40 minutes.” Williams’ performance was mirrored by Swarthmore’s Zac O’Dell, who scored 21 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds. His teammate Nate Shafer, a forward, had 10 rebounds. Randolph-Macon senior forward Luke Neeley was the game’s only other double-figure scorer with 12 points – all from 3-point range. Sophomore guard Buzz Anthony finished see NCAA, pg. 25

Yellow Jackets hold on for win over Seahawks By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – For much of the second half, RandolphMacon’s men’s lacrosse team led visiting St. Mary’s by as much as 5 points at Day Field Wednesday, but the Seahawks were not going to go down easy. They made it interesting down the stretch, closing the distance on the Yellow Jackets, though Randolph-Macon held on for a 12-9 non-conference victory. The Yellow Jackets led 9-5 at halftime and extended their lead to 10-5 early in the third quarter; they again extended the lead to 11-6 early in the fourth. But every time they scored, St. Mary’s answered, getting the final two goals before the final horn went off. “I think our guys learned a little bit today about how to manage a game and manage a lead,” said Randolph-Macon head men’s lacrosse coach J.B. Sheridan. “We’ve got some new Dave Lawrence/The Local Randolph-Macon attacker Colin DiSesa (Hanover High School) zeroes in on the St. Mary’s goal in the Yellow Jackets’ 12-9 win over guys out there and still have some young guys, but with the Seahawks at Day Field Wednesday. Ty Anderson, Andrew Tiffey and Ryan Tiffey each had a pair of goals for RandolphMacon. Andrew Tiffey led in the assist department with five. Tyler Flora and Brandon Smith had the Yellow Jacket’s other two goals. On the defensive side, goalkeeper Chris Cerrina proved a tough man to get by, recording 16 saves. “Chris Cerrina had a great day. He’s a senior goalie and he played like it today,” Sheridan said. “The best thing defensively is that we were disciplined and patient, I thought, pretty much the whole game and got them to wear down their shot clock.” The Seahawks were led by Jude Brown with three goals. Jeremiah Clemmer and Dominic Venanzi each scored twice for St. Mary’s. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

with 10 rebounds. Swarthmore bookended it’s leads – jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game, and then again in the final two minutes. But, from 17:55 until 8:08 in the first half, the Yellow Jackets seemed unstoppable.
Darryl Williams ignited a 29-10 eruption with a steal and Buzz Anthony converted the ensuing layup to cut the Garnet’s lead to 5-4. It then seemed as if the Yellow Jackets couldn’t miss, with Williams and fellow senior forward Luke Neeley each converting three 3-point opportunities and junior guard Corey Bays adding another long-range goal. But what goes up must come down, and as the Swarthmore defense caught its breath, the Randolph-Macon offense started looking more like mortals. The Garnet cut the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 8 points, 41-33, by halftime, and kept a slowbut-steady comeback pace
throughout the second half. Harkins hit a 3-pointer to tie the game 47-47 with 13:10 left in the game. Williams – who sat out much of the second half with four fouls – hit a 3-pointer at 11:08 to put RandolphMacon back in the lead, but Swarthmore’s momentum could not be stopped. “I think we just missed some shots. a layup with 1:47 left. Bays connected on a 3-pointer with 31 seconds left to put RandolphMacon back on top 57-55. On the ensuing possession, the Yellow Jackets did what they could to deny Swarthmore’s long-range shooters a good look at the basket, but the Garnet kept the ball moving from one

Virginia529 prepaid tuition program open RICHMOND --- Tuition and mandatory fees are typically the most expensive part of higher education. In the face of these rising costs, more families are looking for affordable, flexible and easy-to-use savings options. For a limited time --- March 1 through April 30 --- Virginia529 will open enrollment for its Prepaid529 program, offering Virginia families the opportunity to purchase up to 10 semesters of coverage. Each Prepaid529 semester purchased covers a future semester of undergraduate in-state tuition and mandatory fees at twoand four-year Virginia public colleges or universities. Students may use Prepaid529 at any institution across the country where 529 plans are eligible, although payouts will differ. Prices and payment options vary by the age of the child, length of payment term, and number of semesters purchased. Families are shouldering the majority of the cost to go to college, with tuition making up the lion’s share of the price tag. And with college costs continuing to rise every year, Virginia residents have an opportunity to save for college tuition and guard against escalating tuition costs by enrolling in Prepaid529.

Virginia529 anticipates that this may be the final enrollment period for the Prepaid529 program in its current form. Legislation has unanimously passed in the Virginia General Assembly House and Senate and is awaiting the Governor’s signature that would prospectively change the benefit structure for future accounts. These changes are still being finalized. There will be no changes to existing Prepaid529 contracts, and current contracts will retain the Prepaid529 benefit structure in effect at the time of purchase. Individuals who later decide they prefer the new benefit structure may transfer a Prepaid529 contract to the new program. A Prepaid529 calculator available at Virginia529.com illustrates the full array of price and payment options for a 2019 contract. Families can try out various scenarios before deciding what works best for their goals and budget. The first payment is not due until May 1. Visit Virginia529.com to enroll, learn more about the tax deduction and review the Prepaid529 Program Description & Master Agreement.
