ECHANICSVILLE – Christina Dobson, an English teacher at Atlee High School, has been named the 2018-2019 Hanover County Public Schools Innovator of the Year. The award seeks to encourage and empower teachers to transform learning by continuously challenging, inspiring, and engaging students using new and relevant ideas. Dobson received $1,000 from the Hanover Education Foundation, a wireless keyboard and mouse, a CD/DVD reader/writer, and a crystal engraved award. She said she plans to use the cash grant to purchase whiteboard writing tables and technology to enhance collaboration in her classroom. She has been employed with Hanover County Public Schools since 2014. Dobson’s vision for a new course, Composition Theory, became a reality through her perseverance and innovative thinking. Students learn business skills, how to operate strong social media connections, how to communicate effectively with their peers, and how to deal with setbacks and

frustrations —all key innovative and relevant skills for today’s learners. These efforts inspired her to create the Raider Writing Center that has already served over 500 students this school year. Students enrolled in Composition Theory assist with operating the writing center as a real business. This includes designing business cards, consulting with “clients” -both stu

The decision was made: time to meet Trebek

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor

s soon as I hit the “submit” button, reality set in: I just put myself out there to be considered as a candidate for Jeopardy. Talk about being in a Friday fog (this was written on the 29th). Like many products of the relatively early days of television, back when we had an overwhelming three networks -- ABC, CBS and NBC -- from which to choose, my family -- highly competitive in the world of board games -- gathered for as many game shows as possible. Of course, at that time most game shows aired during the daytime, and there were no video

recorders to capture programs you would miss because of school or work. Jeopardy has been a family favorite for decades. After having watched Alex Trebek for 35 years, you feel like you know him. He’s personable and funny -- and certainly puts the contestants at ease. So why did I decide to try out for the show? I’m no genius (my sister was), but I’ve found in the nightly tuning in to Jeopardy with my mother that I know more than I ever suspected. The reason is simple: I read Associated Press stories for years and years -- often being the editor determining which articles would be included in that day’s edition. I always tell Mom that I’m a really good guess-

er. It’s amazing what comes from deep within my brain with some categories. Since I couldn’t decided what I wanted to be when I grew up, I studied courses like art and music appreciation (it’s incredible what I retained). Yes, the interest has been expressed and an application was submitted. At this point, I really don’t know what I’ll do if -- by an unbelievable chance -- I an invited to take the test in D.C. Sure, I’d like to meet Alex Trebek and thank him for his years of teaching and entertaining us. By the way, keep him in your prayers as he battles pancreatic cancer. As for me and a TV debut . . . ,well, we’ll just have to wait and see.

‘I’ll take that to go’ -- dinner isn’t exactly for dogs By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist We’ve all been there. The waiter arrives with your food and you immediately realize the portions are enormous and you’ll never be able to finish that over-packed plate. No big deal. When everyone is finished eating, you politely ask for a doggie bag to take home leftovers that are more likely to end up in your stomach than your canines. Easy, peasy, right?

True enough unless you have kids from another generation. “He means a to-go box,” my daughter quickly told the server. Minutes later, my uneaten portions came back to the table in a neatly-foiled box, packaged perfectly for the ride home. “Why do you call that a doggie bag?” one of my children asked. It suddenly hit me that the term doggie bag was foreign to them -- as a bitcoin is to me -- a remnant of days gone by when subtlety ruled and

Emily Post reminded us that humans don’t take leftovers home from a restaurant. Now, I’m not sure about manners, but it always seemed odd to me that people asked for doggie bags when it was more than obvious the leftovers were for them. But, it seems, at some point in our evolving culture, the thought of wrapping or handling leftovers and sticking them in your pocket became offensive, and people felt a need to invent the doggie cover story.

I learned that what I considered a true piece of American culture was actually invented by Romans who regularly wrapped leftovers and took them home for later enjoyment. But, in modern times, the practice is truly American. The doggie bag became an American institution during World War II when food shortages were real and people didn’t waste much to ensure a united front against the see DOGS, pg. 8

Former delegate explains support for Scott Wyatt (Editor’s note: The following was addressed to “Dear 97th District Voter”.) As the delegate for 28 years for Hanover County, I follow with tremendous interest the major legislative priorities that impact our home. As many of you all are aware, the 2018 General Assembly passed Medicaid expansion or what I call ObamaCare with the full support of all members of the House Democratic party. Sadly, they were joined by a group of Republican delegates, including the delegate from the 97th District, Del. Chris Peace. Del. Peace is the only delegate in our conservative region that voted for this terrible program. In every state that has expanded Medicaid, the program has not delivered as promised. Medicaid expansion has been responsible for huge budget deficits and will eventually divert limited funds away from other state funding priorities such as schools, law enforcement, etc. Sen. Ryan McDougle, Del. Buddy Fowler, Sen. Tommy Norment, and even Sen. Siobhan Dunnavant, who is a physician and represents liberal progressive Henrico County, voted against Medicaid expansion. For these reasons and with a "heavy heart,” I feel it is time for the citizens of the 97th Legislative District to make a change in delegate. I am endorsing Scott Wyatt, the Cold Harbor supervisor. I have met with Scott and he has the character and foresight to take on this job. He has done a great job serving as the Cold Harbor supervisor. The decision for delegate will be made on Saturday, May 4, in a convention at Hanover High School. In order see LETTERS, pg. 8

Brad’s family – wife Melanie and daughter Olivia Robinson – benefitted from the program. Matt’s mother Barbara said Frank Siller “came to Mechanicsville and did this without any solicitation or anything. enemy. Restaurants routinely provided customers with bags with cute names like Bones for Bowser or Don’t Forget Fido and cute pictures of cocker spaniels. You heard me right. Cocker spaniels once held the same position of popularity as today’s Labrador Retriever, but that’s an observation that can wait for another column. So, when did doggie bags become to-go boxes? I’m not sure but it somehow seems like a logical progression to me, an attempt to mean what we say rather than sugarcoat a request. I’m not sure what motivates us to offer such minor deceptions as calling a leftovers container a doggie bag. Even more confusing, why would anyone want to conceal their desire to eat the food they purchased in the privacy of their own home? I’d like to think I’m above the pressures that those old customs could present, and I never felt embarrassed to ask for a doggie bag, or provide one for that matter. the Tobacco Company, I saw customers regularly leave the restaurant with one of those coated white bags with the cute puppy emblazoned on the outside. I also saw the most refined of patrons stuffing rolls into their purse or pocket. The doggie bag seemed more, let’s say, mannerly. I quickly realized you sometimes have to let go of the past, and, from now on, I’ll request a to-go box and leave with the same leftovers assured I have offended or misled no one, or appeared more like a dinosaur than a rapping dad. I had more trouble explaining the reasoning of why people would request doggie bags for food that was clearly intended for them. They couldn’t understand why someone would be embarrassed to ask for containers to take home food. And, come to think of it, neither can I. It goes to prove you learn something new every day, and one is never too old to change. My kids seemed relieved I had retired the term’s usage, but quickly decided to dig deeper. “We’re glad you got that straight, Dad, but why do you call the grocery store Safeway? I had no answer.

Running at-large laws now in effect Kindergarten registration day set HANOVER -- Every year, from April 1 through June 30, it is unlawful for dogs anywhere in Hanover County to be running off their property without being leashed. The county’s “leash law” applies throughout the year in the suburban area. Between April 1 and June 30, it is extended to the rural areas as well because the births of vulnerable livestock, such as baby lambs and calves, tend to take place during this period. Wildlife activity and rabies cases also generally increase in the April 1-June 30 time frame.

Any dogs caught running off their owner’s property will be impounded. Impoundment fees are $25 for the first violation and an additional $10 for each subsequent violation within a 12-month period including a $5 per day boarding fee. Violations also can result in uniform summons or a written warning being issued. Each instance of a dog belonging to a particular owner running at-large is a separate violation, and an additional penalty will apply regardless of whether or not the same dog is involved.

If you see a dog running at large, call Hanover County Emergency Communications at 804-365-6140. Any dangerous animal can be reported by dialing 911 for immediate assistance, 24/7. For more information about Hanover County’s running at-large laws, call Animal Control at 3656485. Dogs cannot run off of their owner’s property at any time of year without a current county license tag affixed to their collar. Information submitted by Tom Harris, Hanover County public information officer.

ASHLAND -- When the Virginia General Assembly approved its budget earlier last month, the final version reduced Hanover’s educational share from the Commonwealth by $491,000. At the March 13 meeting of the Hanover County School Board, Michael Gill, superintendent, announced how the District could compensate for the loss in that revenue by eliminating the county’s participation in the Regional MathScience Innovation Center. Earlier this year, Henrico County and the City of Richmond’s school systems announced plans to withdraw

“A year ago, Chesterfield and Powhatan counties withdrew from the MathScience Center, Gill said. “Earlier this year, Henrico and Richmond City announced they were withdrawing. The MathScience Center was already in a period of transition. In a recent letter distributed to parents, Jennifer Greif, assistant superintendent for instructional leadership, also noted that those transitional challenges contributed to the decision to abandon the program. “Due to the MSIC’s ongoing funding challenges, their model of service will be substantially changing, Greif said. “Regrettably, the new models being discussed are not as advantageous to our students as the current model. And Gill emphasized the importance of science and technology programs in today’s curriculum would not be affected, and said many of the program’s objectives continue in house at Hanover schools. A recent communication issued to parents earlier this week reinforced that philosophy. see MSIC, pg. 31

tiful gardens at 306 College Ave. Purchased by Hayes and Karen Hanley in 2001, the new owners began their garden landscaping renovations immediately. A spacious screened porch with both dining and sitting areas was added in2005. During the period of construction, the driveway was redirected and in its place a

brick patio was installed. The abundant gardens curve and meander around the house, making a fluid combination of hardscape and garden places. Stone pathways are lined with hostas, hellebores, hydrangeas and other shade-loving plants. Across the street at 305 College Ave. is the home of Jerry and Rosanne Shalf. The

history of this early Colonial Revival Style home dates to 1907. When purchased in 1984, the house had no balcony or widow’s walk and all the windows had shutters. Early photos of the house encouraged the owners to restore the missing pieces and remove the shutters. The Shalfs went on to remodel the kitchen, build a

garage, and create a screened back porch and deck. The rear yard has espaliered fruit trees, a cutting garden, and raised beds for vegetables. There is much to see on this tour as you enjoy the outdoor gardens as well as the homes, flower arrangements, see TOUR, pg. 19

AARP hosting County needs volunteers to help with North Anna maintenance, restoration family event for caregivers Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND -- Every day, more than 1 million Virginians care for older parents, spouses, and adult children with disabilities, helping with everything from driving to the doctor’s office or getting groceries to balancing checkbooks and helping with medical care. AARP is hosting an event focusing on hearing the needs of family caregivers from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, at the Ashland Theatre at 205 England St. in Ashland. This session will include the

free screening of a popular current film that focuses on the challenges of caregiving from the viewpoint of family caregivers. Caring for a parent, spouse or other loved one can be a rewarding experience, but it also can be challenging. It is helpful for caregivers to ask themselves the following questions: Do you spend several see AARP, pg. 17

DOSWELL – Volunteers are invited to take part in the maintenance and restoration of the North Anna Battlefield Park at 11576 Verdon Rd. in Doswell. People from across the country will come to the Hanover County Park Day event, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 18. The park is about three miles west of U.S. 1. Sponsored by the American Battlefield Trust, the Parks and Recreation Department will assist volunteers with trash pick-up, trail maintenance and general cleaning within the park. Volunteers will be provided with gloves, trash bags and other tools as necessary. This national event has

been held for the past 23 years and takes place at sites across 32 states. The American Battlefield Trust is a national nonprofit land preservation organization devoted to the protection of America’s hallowed battlegrounds. The first 10 volunteers to RSVP and participate in Park

Insight probe on Mars deploys seismomenter, now ‘hammering’ thermal probe into surface By Dr. George Spagna for The Mechanicsville Local Note: The Keeble Observatory at RandolphMacon College will resume public viewing on Mondays after Spring Break, beginning April 8. We will open 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., weather permitting. Watch our website or check the information line (804-752-3210) for updates. NASA’s Insight probe on Mars has deployed its seismometer and begun “hammering” its thermal probe into the surface. The seismometer has detected “micro-seisms” – not Marsquakes (as distinct from earthquakes) but surface vibrations triggered by wind and changing atmospheric pressure. Remarkable because this is the first detection on another planet, and because the atmosphere itself is so thin – only about 1% the surface pressure on Earth. They continue to monitor for real temblors, hoping to use them as a probe of the Martian interior. The thermal probe has apparently encountered

a rock. They are evaluating whether to continue or try to back it up and try at another location. OSIRIS-REx continues to orbit and study the small asteroid Bennu. The surface is rougher than expected, with many large boulders and very few appealing sites for the planned touch-down and sample grab. Mission scientists have found something completely unexpected: the surface appears to be venting jets of small particles into space. The Japanese Hayabusa-2 has apparently made its first touchdown (more like a gentle pogo-stick contact) and sample collection at the small carbon-rich asteroid Ryugu. An interesting report in Scientific American discusses what seems to be observational confirmation of a model that white dwarf stars essentially “crystallize” as they cool. I’ll say more

about this next month. Lunar phases for April: New Moon on the 5th, at 4:50 a.m.; First Quarter on the 12th, at 3:06 p.m.; Full Moon on the 19th, at 7:12 a.m.; Last Quarter on the 26th, at 6:18 p.m. All times are Eastern Daylight Time. Predawn planet watchers continue in a good place this month. Saturn rises around 2 a.m., so look to find it to the south-southeast before sunrise. Jupiter rises about two hours earlier, so it will be above the southsouthwest horizon, and Metro Creative Graphics much brighter than Saturn. Venus and Mercury will be very bright near the eastern horizon. Mars sets around 11 p.m., so you’ll find it to the southwest in evening twilight. About two hours after sunset at mid month, your view to zenith will be … not much! Leo

Minor is overhead, but as the name suggests, it is not a prominent constellation, and there are no really bright stars to call it to attention. Not so as your attention moves south from zenith. Leo himself is about 70 degrees above the southern horizon, with bright Regulus at the Lion’s heart, and Denebola at the tail. That bright star setting to the southwest is Sirius, actually the brightest star visible from Earth (other than the Sun!). Orion is setting to the west-southwest. Before it finally disappears, use bright red Betelgeuse to find Castor and Pollux, in Gemini. They will be directly above Betelgeuse at about 50 degrees. To the north, the familiar asterism of the Big Dipper in the constellation Ursa Major hangs inverted, high above Polaris. You can find the Pole Star by following the two end stars in the “bowl” of the dipper toward the horizon. Advantage to visitors in rivalry-night games By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – From the moment they got off the bus, Hanover softball was all business. The laser focus was inside the batting cage, during infield practice, then carried over to the game as, in a battle of Region 4B unbeatens at Patrick Henry, the Hawks used the strong pitching of Ellen Palya and the long ball to hand the Patriots their first loss of the season 4-0 on Thursday night. Jenna Currie got the Hawks (6-0) on the board first, roping a line drive over the left center field fence for a solo home run in the top of the second. Hanover later loaded the bases, but Patrick Henry starter Riley Dull got a key strikeout to end the threat and keep the deficit at just one. An inning later, with a Hawk runner at third, Patriots’ right fielder Haillie Street made a diving catch for the final out, stranding another Hanover runner in scoring position. But Patrick Henry struggled to put together hits against Palya, who struck out 13 batters on the night. An RBI single from Jessica Russell upped the lead to 2-0 in the fifth, then Julia Mardigian would slam a key two-run homer in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.

“Our whole season so far has been just everybody coming to do your job,” Palya said when asked about the attitude of the team. “That’s really been a big thing for us this year, do your job, don’t try to do more than you need to do.” In part, the focused attitude shown by Hanover is a reflection of new head coach Michael Rohr, who has coached several of the softball players as head coach of the girls basketball for years. They understand his approach and have shared it with the team since tryouts began on Feb. 18. “She’s worked her tail off,” Rohr said when asked if Palya is the forgotten pitcher in Hanover County. “I think Ellen’s fantastic. I think she’s out to prove a little something.” Rohr said that assessment applied to the rest of the team “They’ve been working really hard,” he said. “The reason for their success so far is working hard, coming to practice every day wanting to get better. Patrick Henry fell to 5-1. Once softball was complete, Hanover players zoomed over to root for the Hawk baseball team, with a looser approach but looking to do big things under first-year head coach Tyler Kane. A gutsy Patrick Henry team went deep into their pitching rotation to try to John Beebe for The Local

keep things close, but Hanover finally broke the game open with six runs in the top of the seventh for an 11-0 victory. Colby Hutnan opened the second with a double, later scoring on a single from Brandon Taylor. Jack Mardigian made it 2-0 when he scored on a Caydon Richardson sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Hanover (4-0) added three runs as Sam Lipscombe had a two-RBI hit, while Jack Goleski later singled to right to plate Lipscombe. Four Hanover pitchers combined for the shutout win, as Cole Wallace worked the first three innings for the victory. The quartet threw a total of 94 pitches while striking out five, four by Eric Anderson. Seth Keller had two of Patrick Henry’s four hits. “We’re finding a way to compete in every game, beginning at Dinwiddie where we came up in the first inning and put pressure on them,” Kane said of the season’s first three weeks. “I challenged them back in the fall that we’ve got to find a way to compete, win every pitch, and so far they’ve done an excellent job mentally and physically.” Patrick Henry (3-4) looks to bounce back Friday when it hosts Louisa. The Hawks will host Fredericksburg Christian the same afternoon as they begin a seven-game homestand that sees Hanover in their friendly confines through April 24. Meanwhile, across the county, Lee-Davis left rival Atlee with a pair of hard-fought victories. Junior Savanah Henley pitched an eight-inning no-hitter, fanning 13 Atlee Raiders as the Confederates pushed across the game’s only run in the top of the eighth for a 1-0 victory in the latest chapter of this storied softball rivalry. Patience pays off for Hawk boys soccer in 4-1 win By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local HENRICO – Ashton Poythress and Josh Lambour have shared time on a soccer field on more than a few occasions. And when Hanover Hawks boys soccer was trying to take an early lead Tuesday night against Capital District rival Henrico, it was taking longer than they had hoped to find an offensive solution. But patience paid off when Poythress, blazing down the right side of the field, sent a centering pass which was executed perfectly by Lambour. Hanover broke the ice, then dominated play from there for a 4-1 win in a match played at Capital Park near Douglas Wilder Middle School (Henrico High School’s new synthetic turf football field is being installed over the spring). “It’s chemistry between us. We’ve been playing together for so long, we’re best friends outside of school,” Poythress said of his connection to Lambour. “We just know where each other

is on the field. Off the field, we’re always with each other.” Poythress has committed to play collegiately for Randolph College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The ability to form strong non-verbal communication is critical, especially on an unfamiliar field on a brutally cold evening against a Henrico team which showed signs of great speed early. But once the duo broke the ice, the match broke Hanover’s way, taking advantage of a Poythress penalty shot to up the lead to 2-0 before halftime. Communication was the theme of head coach Laurent Body’s intermission conversation with the team. “The reason why I was a little tight at halftime is that these guys are fantastic, and they talk all the time,” Body began. “It’s my pleasure seeing them warming up by themselves. Here in the first half, no communication, they were all over the place. We were too relaxed.” Poythress’ second goal, thanks to a great assist from Harrison Adams, made it 3-0 in Rob Witham for The Local

the 51st minute, then, the final Hanover tally came on an athletic play from John Leimann. The senior forward released his shot as a charging Henrico goalkeeper approached, somehow leaping over him after sending the ball past him and into the net for the 4-0 advantage.

Henrico scored their lone goal in stoppage time, which was the first goal allowed so far this season by the Hawks. The second, some 48 hours later by Patrick Henry’s Turner Hart, helped the Patriots hand Hanover their first defeat of 2019 in surprising fashion, fall-

ing in Ashland 1-0. The Hawks enter Spring Break at 3-1, still with some questions to answer and issues to solve. “I think it takes us a little bit to get settled into games,” Poythress said after the Henrico victory. “But there’s no doubt that we can play with anyone in

the state.” Hanover will look to use the loss as a wake-up call as they return from break to host Region 4B rival Courtland on April 8, then rival Atlee on April 12. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

Carter Trice hit a pair of home runs for Lee-Davis (4-1), his second one drawing the Confederates within a run at 3-2 in the top of the sixth. Cole

Jenkins followed with a single, scoring on a double by Dallas Hairfield to tie the game. In the eighth, Trice scored the tie-breaking run on a sacrifice fly from C.J. DiNapoli. Jenkins, who advanced to third on the play, later scored on a passed ball. DiNapoli earned the win in

relief, working the final three innings, while Brannon Mantlo was the hard-luck loser in relief for Atlee (3-2). The Raiders host North Stafford on Thursday at 6 p.m., the first of three home games in two days to wrap up Spring Break. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group. Debbie said she suggested Abram enter the Hanover Arts and Activities Centersponsored Idols competition because he “wants to get into this music thing, so let’s see TEEN, pg. 14 `

Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Hodnett

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Luna, 474185, is a 2½-year-old spayed female plot hound. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Luna is a sweetheart who is in the shelter for the second time. Her previous owner had to move and couldn’t take her. Luna has a very friendly disposition. She does very well around other people and is friendly around most dogs. Luna knows basic commands and is house-trained. She should adjust well with an indoor living situation. Wizard, 545412, is a 4-month-old neutered male domestic shorthaired feline. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Wizard is a young cat that came to the shelter two weeks ago. He more than likely has been an outside cat, but Wizard has adjusted great to indoor life. He is well litter-trained and clean. Wizard also is friendly around people. He is not overly active, but he might come out of his shell in a new home. Wizard should be suited for indoor/outdoor living. For more information on these great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. You also can visit the website to see other animals available for adoption at http://hanovercounty.gov/Animals/Adopt-a-Pet/.
