the decision to move to Hanover County was easy. Walsh said, “Moving to Hanover County was the smartest thing we ever did for our family. My family has decided to raise future generations in Hanover County. This is why I am running for supervisor! Walsh said he is a proud and civically engaged resident, and has become a regular fixture at board of supervisors meetings. Much to his dismay, Walsh
said, in the last decade since making Hanover County home; he has witnessed the wide destruction of farmland and forests due to the approval and/or construction of high-density housing developments throughout Hanover County, particularly in the Chickahominy District. Residents face issues of overcrowded schools, congested roads, and stretched Fire-EMS and Sheriff ’s Office/ Safety Services.
Though supportive of smart economic growth, Walsh said he stands in fierce opposition to recent overcrowding measures. As supervisor, Walsh would work hard for his fellow neighbors to stop hyperdevelopment. Walsh proudly describes the accomplishments of each of his children. He credits much of their success to Hanover County Public Schools. From ballet to baseball, Walsh said he is enam-
ored by them all. His oldest, a Virginia State Trooper, also resides in Hanover County. After several years of teaching/administrating in K-12, Walsh taught mathematics and physiology in college, and now works in a senior leadership capacity at the University of Richmond’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies. On Sundays, he can often be found assisting his wife teaching Sunday School at church, spending time with
family, and relishing these last few years with their youngest child still living at home. Walsh, a Republican, said he is seeking to unseat an incumbent who, over eight years, has approved 2,500 high-density housing units in Hanover County. To learn more about Walsh and his desire to represent the Chickahominy District, his Facebook is Tom-Walshfor-Hanover or website www. walshforhanover.com.
Siller decided to come to Mechanicsville to help the community following the tragedy. Howell’s mother Barbara,
who also is involved in organizing the run/walk, noted that Clark’s last act – heroic in every sense of the word -- was to “push
the other guys out of the way. She also pointed out that the Tunnel to Towers Foundation doesn’t request repayment. Her son has set a goal of paying the foundation back in three years so that someone else may be helped. As the event remembering Clark approaches, the Howells said they want the focus to be on family. Barbara Howell said, “It’s a walk or a run -- it’s not really a race; it’s a charity event. Law enforcement agencies, fire-EMS crews and members of the military are invited to take part in the run/walk. First responders are welcome to par-
ticipate in their turnout gear. Significant to the event is the route being lined with individual posters of the 408 first responders – fire, EMS and police – that died in the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. Stephen Siller was in the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel when he became aware of a plane hitting the towers. He ran through the tunnel to the disaster zone. Premier sponsor Hometown Realty is offering $5 for every photo posted to social media with someone wearing a Hometown hat. Hometown for Heroes has the
hashtag #hometownforheroes. A post-race celebration will get underway at 1 p.m. and continue until 4 p.m. at Center of the Universe Brewing Company. The event will feature live music, food, and a limited edition beer that is being brewed for Clark. U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Virginia, will be the keynote speaker tomorrow at the Hanover Democratic Committee’s Blue Wave Bash at the Montpelier Center for Arts and Education.
McClellan will serve as Master of Ceremonies. McClellan has become a leader in the Virginia General Assembly and also is known to work across the aisle to enact legislation aimed at helping
Virginians. This marks the 10th anniversary of the Blue Moon Bash/ Blue Wave Bash fundraiser. “When we first launched the fundraiser, we called it the Blue Moon Bash because it seemed that Democrats in Virginia were elected once in a blue moon,” Toni Radler, committee chair, said. “However, in 2018, as new Democratic delegates and senators were swept into office, we changed the name to Blue Wave Bash to reflect the dawning of a new era and the new energy that is propelling our candidates forward. We are especially honored to have Sen. Warner and Sen. McClellan celebrate this anniversary with us.” For more information on tickets to the Blue Wave Bash, go to hvadems.com.

Losing sister life-changing in many ways

er friends referred to her as “The Queen of Knowledge,” which was accurate considering her IQ and love of learning. To me, she was my older sister and only sibling. She was my protector, advisor, sympathetic ear, and support system. She was four years older, but that seems like a gulf when you’re a kid. And I was, without a doubt, the mischievous little sister. The similarities between us were few. Robin was content to read, and reading was probably one of her favorite activities. I, on the other hand, was more likely to be found outside playing with the neighborhood youth. She was satisfied to absorb the Nancy Drew series of books while I would be scraping a knee
or elbow in the throes of some type of sports competition. Robin left us on April 27, 2011, and her death has had a far greater impact on my life than I expected. Gone is the voice of reason. As a matter of fact, I would call her Reasonable Robin for her practical actions. She relished the title. She was patient in making decisions, while I’ve always been impulsive. Throughout my highs and lows, she was the voice of comfort and guidance. Just like when Dad passed away in 1992, I so miss picking up the phone when I was in need of advice. Robin lived life to the fullest, and she had an unquenchable thirst for learning. She pursued an education that took her up to a Ph.D. She was a wife, a daughter, a sister, a cousin, an aunt and a friend. With each, she was fully committed, as well as loving and giving.
My heart aches as I write this. No one can replace her. Her husband, my brother-in-law, remains a blessing to Mom and me. We inherited a wonderful extended family when Robin died. She had an infectious laugh (so many people have said that to me since her death) and she was incredibly generous. Michael designed the tombstone for Robin’s grave at Hollywood Cemetery. Mom and I will go there Saturday to place yellow roses, which were her favorite. Michael had a quote from Robin inscribed on the marker: “The last time will come and go and we will not know it was the last time.” Mom and I talk about Dad and Robin every day. The memories bring back smiles and tears. Saturday will be a day of sadness and remembrances. My sister lives on through our stories.
VDOT change won’t keep school sign activated A lot of preparation and planning has been put into the new roundabout at the intersection of Cold Harbor and Creighton roads. Poles and lines have been relocated and the existing traffic control lights continue to function. There is, however, one traffic control that will, according to the good people at the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), remain without power. The school speed limit sign for Cold Harbor Elementary School nearest Creighton Road will not be connected. see LETTERS, pg. 8
If it comes from a cow, does that still make it milk? By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It’s a refrain every person from my generation has heard at least at once during their childhood. “If y’all keep drinking milk like this, we’re going to have to buy a cow,” my mother would often exclaim as she removed an empty milk container from the refrigerator.
It was a different era, a glass of milk was often the cure all for anything that ailed — everything from a bad day at school to a bloodied nose could be cured by a glass of cold milk, or so it seemed. My love of the cow juice has been passed on to my children, who regularly empty a gallon of milk without batting an eye. It’s a treat, even in the

In recent years, the state of the dairy industry has been a topic of conversation, and, if you have visited the milk cooler in recent years, you might be surprised at the number of products contained in those refrigerated shelves, all of them claiming the

Last year, the Food and Drug Administration decided to initiate a study that would more clearly define what makes a product qualify as milk, and found that many products claiming a milk category connection are actually nut-based drinks. merly thought was somehow related to or contained some form of milk or dairy. It seems the FDA is well aware of the confusion and the days of nutbased drinks may be limited, or at least the way we refer to them. FDA commissioner Scott Gotlieb recently said in a published article that “an almond doesn’t lactate,” therefore making it ineligible for the milk label. One dairy farmer suggested the products be referred to as nut juice, but I wouldn’t count on that showing up in your local dairy case any time soon. You might think that the nutbased milks taking offense and defense to the proposed regulations that would force many of them to rename their products is just another example of the little guy taking a jab at the all-powerful dairy industry. industry has endured a number of significant and market impacting events that have seriously affected their seemingly untouchable consumer base. Americans don’t drink as much milk as they once did and sales have declined while nut-based beverages have enjoyed steady, and, in some cases, phenomenal, growth in recent years. What once was a niche product, is now an everyday staple in some house-
holds as many Americans opt for healthier dietary choices. Add to that, trade tariffs and increasing production costs and it’s easy to understand why today’s dairy farmer is insisting on proper labeling when it comes to milk. I’m not sure if we are opening a can of worms that will lead us down a slippery slope of requiring every word to exactly fit its definition or precisely what it describes. For example, when is a turkey-based hot dog not a hot dog, or is a veggie burger really a burger? Perhaps it’s my undying

Is solar power in schools on the horizon in Hanover? By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — Hanover County School Board members approved two adjustments to the 2019-2020 budget during the April 10 meeting. A $491,000 shortfall in state funding prompted Michael Gill, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, to recommend the county’s withdrawal from the Math Science Innovation Center. Participation in the regional STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) program was funded in this year’s original budget, but Gill said the shortfall required serious consideration of a program that has seen its share of changes in recent years. In addition to the financial

counties also have withdrawn from the regional center. Gill said Hanover would withdraw from MSIC effective July 1 and confirmed the reasoning that prompted the decision. “There were two major reasons for that. One is the budget shortfall in the General Assembly’s budget …,” Gill said. “In addition to that, the MSIC, largely due to the withdrawal of several other school divisions, has changed its model in a way we do feel would best serve Hanover County moving forward.” The shortfall’s balance — about $60,000 — will be rectified by attrition and cost savings, according to school officials. By Penelope Fleming Special to The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE — The Hanover Theatre Company’s production of Arthur Miller’s classic play The Crucible will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 2-4, at Hanover High School. Tickets are $8 each. The Crucible is a fictionalized version of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials in which the playwright draws parallels between
those events and the McCarthyism of his own time. It’s a tale that director Debra Clinton said she feels is still relevant today. Hanover Theatre Company (HTC) students suggested it to her as a possibility for their spring performance, having read and analyzed it in their English classes. “[There is] huge support from the [Hanover High School] teachers due to the material,” Clinton said. She noted the value of “the visceral teaching of history through (age appropriate) theatre.”
Students participating in the production — many of them freshmen making their first attempt at acting onstage with HTC — are gaining an insight into the difficulty of maintaining personal integrity in the face of contradictory public opinion. Clinton said she believes her talented actors are up to the task of portraying the many distinctive characters populating the town of Salem, Massachusetts, during this troubled time in American history, and she encourages community members to be “witnesses” in the court.

Ashland Garden Club readies five houses, a garden for unique tour Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com SHLAND -- The Ashland Garden Club will be spotlighting its Mayberry-like town on Saturday as members take part in the Historic Garden Week tour. Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on April 27, the tour will include the houses at 702 S. Center St. and 602 Duncan St. in Ashland. All five homes on the tour, as well as one garden, are located within the town’s Historic District. The town is characterized by eclectic neighborhoods with houses both quaint and grand. The house at 702 South Center St. was possibly built as early as the 1840s, making it one of the oldest in the area. By the end of the 20th century, the house had fallen into disrepair and extensive renovations were necessary to restore the house to the home it is today. At some point in its history, a small kitchen had been added and during the latest restoration, this area was enlarged and modernized. The current owners, Jason and Shannon Taylor, purchased the house in 2016, completed the refreshing of

At the time of purchase, the existing yard was a blank landscape allowing for the development of flower beds that include pass-along perennials shared by neighbors. The renovation of the second house at 602 Duncan St. was extensive as this 1987 home, designed and built by local artist Alice Alexander, was taken down to its studs, as the new owners, Tim and Esther McDermott, were determined to change the house to fulfill their vision.
With a total makeover of this English-style cottage, they relocated the kitchen, dining room, laundry room and downstairs master bedroom, added a front porch, garage and 700 square feet of new living space. Most of the demolition work was completed by the family with the new design and construction plans developed by the McDermott’s son, Michael. SHLAND -- Springtime Sounds with the Richmond Symphony: Copland, Spohr, and Schubert in the Metro Collection at RandolphMacon College will be presented at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, at Blackwell Auditorium at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. Audiencesa re invited to experience the personal connection of the power of live music in this intimate setting, featuring smaller scale, but no less inspiring, classical works. Conducted by Chia-Hsuan Lin and featuring clarinetist David Lemelin, this concert makes for a perfect Sunday afternoon. A native of Québec, Canada, Lemelin is currently principal clarinetist with the Richmond Symphony. Before joining the Symphony, he was second/Eb clarinetist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and also previously served a four-year fellowship with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, where he had the opportunity to work with a wide array of renowned musicians and conductors. In November 2011, Lemelin was a winner of the New World Symphony Concerto Competition and performed a concerto with

the orchestra. In addition, he has played with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, and the Orchestre Symphonique de Sherbrooke. He received his Master of Music from DePaul University in Chicago and his Bachelor of Music from McGill University in Montreal, both in Clarinet Performance. His main teachers include Larry Combs, Robert Crowley, and Nathalie DeGrâce. Copland began composing “Music for the Theatre” in 1925 and initially called it “Incidental Music for an Imaginary Drama.” When he changed to the current title, Copland was careful to place a disclaimer in the score: “The composer had no play or literary idea in mind. The title simply implies that at times this music has a quality which is suggestive of the theatre.” In the piece, you can hear the budding nationalism that comes to fruition in Copland’s later works as he paved the way for a truly American “classical” music. For the national element, Copland turned to jazz: “I was preoccupied with the idea of adding to the great history of serious music

South Anna Elementary School counselors Emily Kitching and Ami Balderson celebrate the school’s designation as a 2019-2020 Recognized ASCA Model Program.
SAES honored by counselors’ group MONTPELIER – South Anna Elementary School (SAES) has been named a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). SAES is the second elementary school and third overall in Hanover to be recognized as a RAMP school. As of 2018, only 59 Virginia
schools have received this honor. The RAMP designation recognizes schools that are committed to delivering an exemplary comprehensive school counseling program and encourages school counselors nationwide to strive for excellence. Honorees are awarded for see SAES, pg. 17

Schubert was one of those incredibly talented composers who started studying and writing music at an early age. By the time he was a teenager, he had already produced piano pieces, many songs, several string quartets, a symphony, and an opera. Schubert began work on his “Symphony in C Major when he was only 19. Schubert idolized Beethoven and this symphony contains some of the drama and explosive jabs found in Beethoven’s symphonies. When Schubert wrote “Symphony in C major, the music of Gioacchino Rossini was currently the rage in Vienna and Schubert modeled much of this music on Rossini’s light-hearted style. The only performance this symphony received during Schubert’s lifetime was during

a Schubertiade. When Spohr wrote his concerto for clarinet the instrument had only five keys. He admitted he didn’t know what he was doing, but successfully produced a timehonored piece in the classical music cannon. Aside from the obvious virtuosic aspects of Spohr’s “Clarinet Concerto No. 1, there are some unusual elements. It is in a minor key, and the orchestra plays a slow introduction. The slow movement confines the accompaniment to just violins and cellos. In spite of the minor key, the third movement has a
jaunty quality to it. Instead of ending with a technical flourish, there is a surprising and sudden fade to nothing. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors and active military, and $10 for children and college students. Purchase tickets online at richmondsymphony.com or by calling 1-800-514-ETIX. continue and formalize Rives’ initiative to familiarize his staff with multiple county departments so that they can better respond to requests from members of the public and the board even if a particular attorney is not available. He expected the primary challenge for the County Attorney’s office going forward will be to get the office back to full staffing. “The attorneys and staff in the office have shown a real willingness to go beyond what’s expected of them to ensure that the board and the residents of Hanover continue to receive excellent legal services during this transition,” he said. Walter is a Long Island, New York, native who has spent his career in public service. After receiving his
undergraduate degree from Providence College and completing his studies at the St. John’s University School of Law, Walter spent three years with the New York City Law Department before moving to Virginia. Walter worked as a staff attorney for the Virginia Division of Legislative Services from November 1999 to September 2001, when he was hired by Rives as an Assistant County Attorney. He rose to the rank of Deputy County Attorney in August 2014. In that position, he provided legal counsel to various county departments, served as counsel for the Planning Commission and Social Services Advisory Board and assisted with questions and issues regarding Virginia law, including con-

As Deputy County Attorney, Walter also represented the county in civil and criminal litigation before the courts and served with Rives as legislative liaison in matters before the Virginia General Assembly, among other responsibilities. Walter said his proudest accomplishment with Hanover County is the work done with the Department of Social Services as they assist children who have been abused or neglected or are in foster care. “In many ways, working on those cases is the most important thing that we as an office do, even though they are cases that are rarely in public view,” he said. “Having

the ability to make a real difference in the lives of the most vulnerable members of our community is our greatest responsibility and our greatest privilege. Through that work, I have been able to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families who need help. To me, that’s worth more than accolades or seeing my name in the newspaper.” Peterson also expressed the board’s “great appreciation” for the service of Yvonne S. HANOVER – Residents are reminded that it is illegal to place signs within the Virginia Department of Transportation’s right-of-way and that violations of this law can result in fines. The VDOT right-of-way typically includes median strips, utility poles, street signs and the area between the road and ditch line. Hanover County actively enforces this state law throughout the county, and violators can be assessed a $100 fine per illegal sign. Signs illegally placed on private property also are subject to civil penalties. David Maloney, director of Planning, said his office continues to receive complaints about illegally placed signs over the years and has assessed a number of fines.

er budget adjustment regarding the track at Patick Henry High School. Following a number of complaints from students and parents at the school, officials allotted $200,000 in the 2021 Capital Improvement Plan to fund resurfacing of the aged facility. Unlike other Hanover high schools, the track at Patrick Henry is not located around the football field and does not meet VHSL (Virginia High School League) regulations. suggested the board transfer leftover funds from an Atlee High School HVAC project and resurface the track a year earlier than scheduled. She told board members that, if approved, the move could result in the track being resurfaced by the beginning of school in the fall. Board member John Axselle, Beaverdam District, said he was under the impression that the resurfacing would bring the track up to standards, but the new surface would not result in a certified competitive track. “I thought the goal was to make it a competitive track,” Axselle said. “It’s the only track 6:30

in the county that can’t have track meets. I thought our plan was to make it a track, not just replace it. My concern here is that is I spend $200,000 and still don’t have a track. Are we being wise here?” South Anna representative Sue Dibble noted that much more than the shape or surface would be required to make the track VHSL acceptable. “It would cost about $1.5 million for that,” Dibble said, while noting that the track would be replaced when the school, on the list for replacement, was rebuilt. The extensive track replacement was not included in the approved five-year financial 8 PM

Hawks sweep C-fed teams off diamonds By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – At baseball, it was sudden, swift, and somewhat self-inflicted. At softball, it was continuous and frustrating. In the end Thursday night at Hanover High School, the Hawks sent Lee-Davis back to Route 360 carrying shutout defeats, as Hanover baseball broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-0 victory, while softball continued their torrid hitting, supporting the continued superior pitching of Ellen Palya en route to a 6-0 win. For the baseball Confederates (7-4), it was their first loss where the first inning did not do them in. Previous defeats saw opponents score seven, five and nine runs respectively in the opening inning. In fact, Lee-Davis starter Connor Sorokowski matched Hanover’s senior lefthander Jack Goleski pitch for pitch, inning for inning, all the way to the fateful sixth frame. “It was pretty exciting,” Goleski noted of being involved in the pitcher’s duel. “A game like that, you’ve just got to give it everything you’ve got. It’s fun competing with guys you grew up with, playing against.” Both teams had opportunities early, as Lee-Davis stranded Caden Plummer at third

Multi-sport careers run in Warren family By Rob Witham For the Times-Dispatch MECHANICSVILLE – In an age where sport specialization is increasing in popularity for student-athletes seeking to parlay athletic excellence into a college scholarship, or more, there are still those who choose a more traditional experience, especially at the high school level. Atlee junior Tyler Warren walks the latter road, playing varsity football, basketball and baseball since he arrived on campus as a freshman. While he enjoys being, and chooses to be, a multi-sport athlete, getting to play with many friends, Warren’s understanding of the positives of the experience comes from a man who attends practically every game he plays. Bill George was a threesport student-athlete in his day at Montclair (New Jersey) High School. He played, yes, football, basketball and baseball. Bill George is Tyler Warren’s grandfather. But if you think George is trying to live vicariously through Warren, you’d be mistaken. When asked which sport he enjoys the most when his grandson is in action, George transforms into a coach breaking down film. “I would probably say football, but I can’t because I enjoyed basketball. He’s not a basketball player, he’s an athlete playing basketball,” George explained. “He’s made himself somewhat of a basketball player. In baseball, he can hit some shots, and he’s smart. He always knew from day one to run to the spot.” George, who is lovingly referred to by most everyone at Atlee as “Pops”, says he saw Warren has always enjoyed field as quarterback in 2016 George, to father Terry (who “it” when Warren began play- playing sports and, since first as a freshman, he’s soaked in played college football at the ing youth football at Blue Star. stepping onto Atlee’s football the advice of everyone from University of Richmond) and

his Raider coaches and teammates, realizing all eyes would be on him. “Freshman year, a lot of the football seniors really helped me out, and coach [Matt] Gray is one of the best coaches I’ve played for,” Warren noted. “He really knows how to set me up.” Warren is also happy to be considered simply a Raider, albeit a tall one, when he roams the halls between classes, just wanting to enjoy the full measure of the high school experience. Moving from 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-11 in just a two-month period during seventh grade, his body, in a sense, was catching up with the athletic intel-
ligence seen by George years earlier. His most recent football season saw Warren lead Atlee back to the Class 5, Region B playoffs with a 7-4 record, passing for 876 yards and nine touchdowns while rushing for 554 yards and seven scores. He was also one of the state’s best punters, a natural talent perfected by simply practicing with his father. Warren has verbally committed to Virginia Tech for football, but suitors continue to come calling. Most recently, Penn State and Richmond made offers to him. But none of this drives Warren into wanting to focus solely on football until graduation. He’s having too much fun on both the diamond and the court. When it is time to put pen to paper for the next phase of his career, Warren noted how blessed he is to be able to turn and receive advice from George, just as he turns around before every game, looks into the stands, and sees Pops, who owns a wisdom Warren appreciates. “He’s trying to make me better, he’s not trying to relive his past,” Warren explained. “He’s always telling me what he sees, and what I can do to make myself better. I think he’d make a really good coach, even if I wasn’t his grandchild.” George’s faithful attendance is no surprise. His track record covers youth sports and older siblings. There was a time when he thought the days of fandom were over when his daughter Sandy, Tyler’s mother, concluded her multi-sport athletic career. The influence of George was far from over. He’s learned to text in order to keep in contact with Tyler, as well as older see FAMILY, pg. 26
R-MC men’s lacrosse clinches 4th spot in ODAC By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – In the postgame huddle, even before words were spoken by their head coach, Randolph-Macon men’s lacrosse players were saying, “Thirteen. Thirteen.” A week after setting a program record for most wins in a season with 11, the Yellow Jackets made it 12, using an early scoring spurt and excellent defense to defeat Roanoke College 9-5 Saturday afternoon at Day Field. The more striking statistic was that the victory was only the second for RandolphMacon over the Maroons in program history. The first victory? It took place on April 25, 1972: a 13-9 triumph when the Yellow Jacket program was just in its second year. Coming off the heels of a 19-6 beatdown at the hands of Lynchburg the previous Wednesday night, it was imperative that head coach J.B. Sheridan’s squad look forward, and not behind, as the match had major Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship Tournament implications. By virtue of their win, Randolph-Macon (6-3, 12-4), overtook Roanoke for fourth place in the conference. The match ended the regular season for the Maroons, meaning Randolph-Macon can finish no worse than fourth in conference, assuring them a first-round home match on Day Field when the postseason opens on Tuesday, April 30. “We didn’t have our best performance on Wednesday night,” Sheridan, in his ninth season in Ashland, said following the Saturday victory. “To be able to come back to work – something this group, and the seniors who’ve led us all year, has done is get back to work

Colin DiSesa (Hanover), Ryan Tiffey, Derek Marsilio and Andrew Tiffey each scored on assisted goals. The ability to run the offense, and the passing game,
has been critical to success in the offensive zone all season for Randolph-Macon. “I thought Coach [Michael] Sullinger put together a great offensive plan, and we got the
assisted goals that we really thought we could get to, and that was when we were playing our best, using our teammates,” Sheridan noted. He also blamed a stall offensively in the second period – when Roanoke finally scored and kept the deficit at four, down 6-2 at halftime – on a switch to a more one-on-one style of play. Right out of the gate in the second half, however, the Tiffey brothers connected, as they have many times this season, this time Andrew feeding older brother Ryan for his 28th goal of the year, just 34 seconds in for a 7-2 lead. The Maroons answered with a more aggressive style of one-on-one defense, looking to negate DiSesa and others in order to disrupt the Yellow Jackets’ offensive flow. It worked for a time as a pair of

County teams don’t let weather spoil weekend MECHANICSVILLE – The inclement weather that has plagued the scholastic spring sports season has proven a challenge for many teams as they have tried to get up to speed, but for the county’s track teams, it has in many cases bought time for athletes to recover and/or develop. For teams laden with younger, less experienced athletes, that time has been valuable, as was revealed in many performances at the Lee-Davis Invitational Saturday. Not that the weather had no adverse impact last weekend. The invitational is normally a two-day meet, but severe weather in the region Friday night forced the holding of Friday’s events Saturday after that day’s regularly scheduled events were completed. Despite Saturday’s sunny skies, the wind wreaked havoc in some areas, such as on a talented pole vault field and on distance runners who, while finding the wind at
their back on the front stretch of the track, had gusts of up to 30 miles per hour in their faces on the back stretch. But, there was plenty to celebrate. Lee-Davis, Hanover and Atlee all had a number of topfive finishers at the event. “Other than the wind, which blew 15 to 20 miles an hour all day with a few gusts that got a little higher than that, the meet ran really smooth,” said Lee-Davis head track and field coach Neil Mathews. “The sprinters loved it, having the wind at their back – because you have the wind at your back at Lee-Davis if you’re a sprinter – but the distance kids, they didn’t like it so much because of all the wind. But it was still a very competitive meet with a lot of really tight races.” One of those was the girls 1,600-meter run in which Hanover’s Rachel Crytser finished second to Maggie Walker’s Mary Caroline Heinen. Heinen finished in 5:13.11, just .28 of a second ahead of Crytser. Crytser also finished fourth in the 800.
Crytser’s teammates Kayvon Bagby had a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles. Makenzie Joiner finished fourth in the 400 dash and the Hawk girls’ 1,600 relay team likewise finished fourth. On the boys side, Joél Bowers finished third in the 400 and the boys 1,600 relay team finished fourth. Megan Mann led the LeeDavis girls with a win in the shot put and a third-place finish in the discus. Lauren Taylor finished third in the triple jump and Alyssa Rice third in the pole vault. The Confederate girls 3,200 relay team finished fifth. Isaac Grubbs earned a second-place finish in the pole vault for the Lee-Davis boys. Jack Rice finished fifth in the 100 and Adam Soliman was fifth in the shot put. Alan Williams scored a second-place for Atlee’s boys in the high jump. Kameron Helmlinger finished third in the 1,600 and John Duegaw finished third in the pole vault. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

The Maroons were without the ODAC’s leading scorer, Peter Lindley, for the second straight game. Randolph-Macon now turns their attention to Senior Day Saturday at 4 p.m. when they host Virginia Wesleyan. It will be a chance to answer that chant of “Thirteen. Thirteen,” but, more important, it is an opportunity to gain momentum into the postseason, where the Yellow Jackets hope to make even more history. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

sister Kelly, a former Atlee softball standout now playing for East Tennessee State University. And, as Tyler enjoys being a third-generation multi-sport player in his family, George has had no problem accepting his new identity. “I’m Pops,” George noted with a big smile. “I’m not Bill George anymore, I’m Tyler Warren’s grandfather.” Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
Roanoke goals made it 7-4 with a quarter remaining. The Yellow Jackets slammed the door shut early in the fourth on goals from DiSesa, also his 28th, and freshman Marsilio, one of several first-year players who’ve made an undeniable impact on this team. Chris Cerrina had nine saves in the victory. Ground balls were 36-19 in favor of the Yellow Jackets, who won 10-of-18 faceoffs.

ing Hutnan, and, after another Lee-Davis error, Goleski raced home before Mardigian was tagged out at second trying to advance. Goleski struck out the first two Lee-Davis batters in the seventh, but after a single and walk, head coach Tyler Kane opted for Eric Anderson, who got Sorokowski to ground out to end the game. Goleski was thankful for the opportunity to start in a rivalry game given the talent pool on his team. “We have eight pitchers. In practice, if you don’t throw well, you might not see many innings,” Goleski explained. He is sure to see more after a performance which moved
Hanover to 11-0. Next door at softball, Palya continued her renaissance season, holding Lee-Davis to just two hits, while contributing at the plate with a double and two RBI as the Hawks moved to 10-0. Hanover scored a run in the first, then freshman catcher Jenna Currie launched a home run in the second for a 2-0 lead. Lee-Davis (8-2) threatened in the third with Madison McLaughlin at third base, but Palya fanned Sheridan Lambert to keep the Confederates off the board. With two down in their half of the third, the Hawks added two more as Jessica Russell singled, Julia Mardigian doubled, and Palya delivered her double. Palya fanned 12, walking two in the win. When asked about the unique dynamic of a senior pitcher and a fresh-
man catcher working together, Currie noted a longer history than many may know. “I’ve known [Palya] since I was little. Our families know each other,” Currie explained. “We communicate very well. Sometimes, she’s upset and says ‘don’t talk to me Jenna’, and I’ll respond, ‘alright Ellen, you got this’, and walk away and let her get it together. Other times, I look at her and say Ellen, you are a star!” Now halfway through their regular season, the big challenge for both Hanover teams is not trying to remain unbeaten, but making sure they are improving, so that their peak of play doesn’t come until, they hope, both head to Salem, and the Class 4 state tournament, come June.
