In-party controversy continues with District 97 delegate race

REMEMBERING NICK

By Jim Ridolphi for the Mechanicsville Local M E C HA N IC S V I L L E -- “Do two wrongs make a right?” Those were the words spoken by an attendee at Saturday’s 97th Legislative District Committee meeting at the Atlee Library. The comment came after a raucous meeting where the three-member panel took no action amending or changing an upcoming convention to choose a nominee for the 97th District House of Delegates seat scheduled for Saturday, May 4. Liberante touched lives in classroom and behind lens By Dave Lawrence Sports Edtor (Editor’s note: The following is a personal tribute to Nick Liberante, who joined the Richmond Suburban News family in 2016 as a freelance photojournalist. Our prayers and condolences are with Nick’s family. The complete obituary is on page 10.) When I first met Nick Liberante in 2009, he was my competitor. He was a photographer for the HeraldProgress and I was a reporter and photographer for the Mechanicsville Local. Before

long, he became my friend, and, in 2016, he switched from being my competitor to one of our contracted photojournalists. The most important of those roles was being my friend. And my friend – a longtime presence in Hanover County as a husband, father, grandfather, journalist and teacher at Patrick Henry High School – yielded to an intransigent cancer last Wednesday afternoon. He was 70. In 2014, a year after I see NICK, pg. 3

SHLAND -- Friends of Hanover Dog Parks (FOHDP) is celebrating its seventh anniversary this year. Caroline Cooke said, “Some pretty amazing things have happened because of the hard work and generous donations of so many supporters. And more will happen, but not without your participation.” “A non-profit organization such as ours depends on the willingness of individuals to take a bit of time to serve on its Board of Directors, a volunteer group,” she continued. “The time would be a minimum of two to four hours each month: mon first, to come tto meetings; tthen to followu up on tasks that yo you may have si signed up for. Th These could be to he help with: member bership, fundraising ing, education, out outreach, publicity, or planning and Metro Creative Connection

development.” Volunteers are needed and, Cooke said, no experience is required. She also noted that dog ownership is not required. She asked those who may be interested in volunteering to check out the following Mission and Purpose. “The mission of the Friends is to enrich the quality of life in Hanover County through the establishment of recreational areas where dogs and people can interact in a safe, clean and pleasant environment. “The purpose of the Friends is to promote the health and welfare of companion animals and their owners through education and recreation. In cooperation with Hanover County -- to plan, promote, establish, operate, maintain, and regulate -- we will work to create and support public off-leash dog parks. We view the dog parks as community projects - in partnership with the county, local businesses and civic organizations - that satisfy the needs of dog owners and non-dog owners alike.” Cooke also said, “We’re a team with a common goal as stated in the Mission. We’re a friendly group, too.” Those interested are encouraged to email friendsofhdp@gmail.com or call Caroline Cooke at 804-513-1744.

American about what seemed to be observational confirmation of a model that white dwarf stars essentially “crystallize” as they cool. Unfortunately, I conflated two items. The Scientific American article was about crystallization in neutron stars, not white dwarfs! The white dwarf article was in Physics Today. A white dwarf is what the Sun will become after the next 5 billion years have passed. It’s the fate of all stars less massive than the Sun, and perhaps a few times more massive. First the hydrogen at the core will be fully fused into helium (that’s what powers the solar luminosity), and the star will evolve into a red giant. Once that core is massive enough it will fuse helium into carbon and oxygen. For these low and intermediate mass stars, carbon and oxygen are the end of the line for fusion and energy release, but the

core itself is in a state called electron degeneracy. This is a quantum mechanical effect, but in simplest terms it means that the electrons cannot be squeezed any closer together. This creates a pressure that is completely independent of temperature, and it keeps the core from collapsing even when there is no longer any fusion taking place. Meanwhile the outer layers of the star are becoming unstable to radial pulsation, and the envelope is eventually ejected into space, forming what is called a planetary nebula. The hot core is the white dwarf – up to 1.4 times the mass of the Sun in a dense sphere roughly the size of the Earth, with a density a billion times that of water. Because of their small surface area, white dwarfs have very small luminosities and take a very long time to cool. Fifty years ago astrophysicist Hugh Van Horn predicted that as a white dwarf cools the carbon and oxygen nuclei would segregate, with the more massive oxygen settling toward the center leaving the carbon nuclei in the outer radii. Additionally, even at a temperature of several million kelvin, electrostatic interactions between the nuclei would freeze them into a lattice. This crystallization is what is known as a first order phase transition and, just as water gives off latent heat when it freezes, the transition to a lattice in the white dwarf gives off latent heat which appears as a slight increase in luminosity. Statistically, this should show up as an increased population of white dwarfs at the expected luminosity range for crystallization to occur. Using data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite, researchers at the University of Warwick and

Metro Creative Graphics

the University of Montreal searched for this population in a sample of 15,000 accurately measured white dwarfs. Earlier data sets were too small for the statistical pileup to stand out, with only about 200 examples known with precise distances determined. The Gaia data set improved not only on precisely measured distances but in sheer numbers, making the statistical analysis possible. And they found the enhance population in the precise luminosity range predicted! One of the researchers, Gilles Fontaine, was Van Horn’s first doctoral student, so vindicating the 50-year old prediction was a beautiful example of the student honoring his advisor. All times are Eastern Daylight Time. Mercury returns to evening twilight late in the month. Mars will set around 11:00 pm – look for a red “star” in Taurus, just north of due west. Don’t confuse it with Aldebaran, a real red star which will be below Mars.

Jupiter rises at 10:00, and will be due south around 3:00 am. Saturn rises at midnight and will cross the meridian (due south) at 5:00 am. If you’re an early riser, look for both to the southwest and western skies in predawn twilight. About three hours after sunset at midmonth, our overhead view finds the faint and probably unfamiliar constellation Canes Venatici (Hunting Dogs) near zenith. With no bright stars to distinguish this constellation, your eyes may drift to the north and start tracing down the “handle” of the Big Dipper – both familiar and incorrectly named, as the constellation is actually called Ursa Major (Big Bear). Alkaid is the star at the end of the handle, then the double binary Mizar where the handle bends. Aliothe marks the connection to the bowl. Below Aliothe we will find the front end of the bowl. is dark, and the streets and sidewalks are covered in several inches of snow. A woman walks her dog past a stopped train. Snowflakes emerge from the darkness, reflecting the light of the lamps decorated for the Christmas season. Despite the visible flourishes of a festive atmosphere, the mood that emerges is one of silence and solitude. Nicholas Liberante was much more than a photographer. Born in Syracuse, New York, on Jan. 16, 1949, to Al and Elizabeth Liberante, he came to Virginia in 1977, taking a job in August of that year teaching English at Patrick Henry High School. It was a job he held until he retired in June 2013. Most of that time, he advised some combination of the school’s newspaper, yearbook, and photography programs. His interest in photography intensified during his time at

Patrick Henry. He was mentored by Wilton Tenney, a biology professor at the University of Richmond, whose wife, Eleanor, taught with Nick at Patrick Henry. Mr. Tenney took photos of students and their activities, giving them away to the school and the families of his subjects. He mentored promising photographers such as Nick, as well as two other Local freelancers, Joel Klein and Jim Ridolphi. Nick continued Mr. Tenney’s legacy, helping families with photos of their children and mentoring other aspiring photographers, such as Scott Jackson, a former student of Nick’s at Patrick Henry. “He’d send me photographs. I’d send him photographs,â€? Jackson said. “I kept every one he sent me. It was probably 70 or 80 over the years that he liked and I liked, and we would talk shop. We did that on and off for years. ‌ I always considered Liberante kind of a mentor and a really good friend. I loved talking

photography with him. Nick’s and my shared love of literature drew us together as we got to know each other on the sidelines. We both loved the written word, but not always the same examples of it. For example, our scorecards were both “Yes! on Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22; I gagged my way through J.D. Salinger’s “Catcher in the Rye, which he loved; and he couldn’t get into Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace, which I loved. On some things, we would have to agree to disagree. Oftentimes, the topics on which we disagreed produced the most interesting – enlightening – discussions. That love of literature fueled his education – a master’s degree in English literature from Canisius College in 1976 – as well as his teaching career. Nick the teacher has left quite a legacy, including his former student and our colleague Rob Witham, who worked with Nick at the Herald-Progress until it fold-

ed and who now writes for Richmond Suburban News. Both Witham and Jackson said Nick had a reputation that could strike fear into the heart of any would-be slacker. “I had heard the stories about how notorious his classes were and how people didn’t get A’s. He was going to challenge you in ways that you had never been challenged before, Witham said of his first class with Nick, in English as a junior at Patrick Henry. “I still remember the day: first day of school, August 29, 1983. I can’t remember the number, but it was in B Building, down the breezeway and into the classroom I go. Assigned seats alphabetically, so I’m at the top of the final row, which is right at his desk. I’m like, ‘OK, here we go.’ Witham was not much of a reader at the time. But he was so inspired by Nick’s English class that he took Nick’s advanced novel class in his senior year. He got a C in see NICK, pg. 8

Former LDC chair: Peace has brought results to District As past chair of the 97th Legislative District Committee, beginning under then-Del. Ryan T. McDougle and continuing with Del. Christopher K. Peace, I understand that results matter. And in the battle for the Republican nomination between Del. Chris Peace and challenger Scott Wyatt, actions speak louder than words. As our conservative representative in the House of Delegates, Chris Peace filed legislation to provide tax relief to Virginia’s hard-working families. He enabled access to needed recovery services by victims of violent crime. He initiated and led the effort to establish a career and technical governor’s school in Hanover County. He facilitated the reopening of Colonial Downs racetrack. And he strengthened Virginia’s MOVE OVER law in honor of fallen Hanover Fire-EMS Lt. Brad Clark to better protect our police, fire, and emergency medical responders. With Del. Chris Peace, results matter. In his challenge for the Republican nomination to represent the 97th, Scott Wyatt has falsely claimed that he attended school in Hanover County, when it was in fact Henrico. He

wrongfully asserts that Chris Peace voted to expand ObamaCare. And at a recent meeting to select delegates to the May 4th GOP convention, Wyatt’s team demonstrated its unfathomable disdain for our community’s emergency first responders and our nation’s Armed Forces by stripping the widow of Lt. Brad Clark and two World War II veterans of their right to vote. With Scott Wyatt, actions speak louder than words. As past chair of the 97th Legislative District, as a former firefighter and paramedic, and as a concerned voter who cares deeply about selfless, honorable representation of the outstanding people of our district, results matter -- and Del. Christopher K. Peace delivers. James L. Jenkins Jr. Mechanicsville

Voter wonders whether county needs a change The season for selection and then election for local and some state officials is now underway. Most citizens will not participate in the process until they vote on Election Day. The ill effects of uninformed citizens, coupled with unengaged citizenship, is the subject of this letter. It is “How Responsive Are Hanover County Elected Officials?” The below is an accounting of my recent experiences with those that

claim they want to effectively govern our county. This is the record of one Aubrey “Bucky” Stanley, Beaverdam District representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors and chairman from November 2016 to December 2017, concerning the issue of non-resident students in Hanover County Public Schools. We met with Mr. Stanley in November 2016 to discuss the cost to the county on the defective policy of non-resident students. Also discussed was the issue of responsibility for this lack of enforcement which seemed to be a major concern. In December 2017, after 13 months, I received a letter with the information that I requested. The phone calls and the emails to Stanley during this time must have been over 50. Faye Prichard, Ashland District supervisor, has a record equally as dismal. Emails were sent to Supervisor Pritchard on March 20, 2018, on the topic of student safety in the county public schools. No acknowledgement or response. The recent inquiry to Pritchard was regarding the $500,000 that Hanover gives to the “Richmond Partnership” annually. There were total of five, without any response to date on what the Hanover county’s return on this investment of millions has been. All of these emails should be on the Hanover County server for

the record accounts. After 40 years of living and working in Hanover, this public record is but two examples of elected county officials showing contempt through disrespect of the taxpayer citizens. General, positive, active citizenship could be promoted by any sitting boards with respectful and prompt responses to questions by the citizens. It is with much hope that this letter will encourage citizens to engage and elect public officials who will lead in the spirit honoring the rich traditions of Hanover and Virginia. My mother would say “A new broom sweeps clean.” Is this the time for a new broom? Oscar Walker Hanover

Voters encouraged to think about race methodology Because Scott Wyatt went to such lengths to engineer a convention, it’s clear to me he didn’t think he could pull a Dave Brat style primary upset. For a year or more, it was no secret that Scott Wyatt wanted to challenge Del, Chris Peace. Going into the 97th District vote knowing he was going to run and voting for a convention was a tactic reminiscent of Boss Hogg on “The Dukes of Hazzard”. The Hanover unit chair eventually did put Wyatt off the Legislative District Committee, but at a point too late to correct the tainted result.

People say that if Chris Peace hadn’t cast that one bad vote, he would be in good shape. If you believe that, I have a fridge full of free Bubble Up and rainbow stew. The Far Right, with its yellow signs, started casting Peace as a humongous fungus among us years before the vote. I would hear in the restaurants and shops how people think Peace does not deserve to represent us because he’s some sort of effete snob. These people get mad when people judge President Trump by his personality. They have been looking for some excuse to challenge Peace for years because of his style. To them, it matters not what political means are used to dislodge Del. Peace. To those Wyatt supporters who believe the ends justify the means, consider this as you think of what to do next Saturday morning: anyone who would cheat for you sooner or later ends up cheating on you. Nat Atkins Mechanicsville

Undecided delegates urged to ask question Del. Chris Peace brought the unwanted attention to the issue of his credibility and integrity on himself after claiming for years he didn’t support Medicaid Expansion -- only to turn around and vote for it. Claims of compassion aside, Peace went on to compare Medicaid Expansion to Social Security and Medicare. Too clever by half, since taxpayers have paid all of their working lives into the latter two programs , while most of the 300,000 to 400,000 now eligible for Medicaid benefits have paid little to nothing, relative to the costs and the benefits they will receive. Medicaid is already swallowing some 25% of Virginia’s entire budget. Here, however, is the deciding see LETTERS, pg. 13

Instead of a visual image, he took care to give the students detailed feedback, usually in the form of red ink on returned assignments. “He had the uncanny ability to take you into the moment in-between, where there are two people whose lives at that moment, what they’re doing, are hanging in the balance and they’re waiting. You could see a thousand words in their faces,â€? Witham said. “And that’s exactly how he taught. you use to apply and get better next time.â€? Despite the workload, despite the red ink, Nick inspired loyalty among his students. “The last person I wanted to disappoint was him,â€? Jackson said. “He connected with his students – all of them. ‌ He kind of approached a trust with you that was reciprocated. The trust went both ways.â€? His teaching style – strict, yet gentle – applied to his parenting style, said his daughter, Laura Liberante Hosaflook. One of the better examples of that involved her brother, Paul. Trip Wells, who subsequently became one of Nick’s best friends, first encountered Nick shortly after he and Nick’s son, an intern at Channel 36 at the time, created the longrunning sports show, “The Score,â€? which was broadcast by Hanover County Public Schools – first on Channel 36 and later on TV99. “We had been doing [the show] for a couple of months,â€? Wells said. “I think it was November when I got this email from Nick – I didn’t know who he was – and it was

entitled, ‘About Paul.’ It basically went into that I needed to do a better job of telling Paul to fix his hair before going on-air, and tuck his shirt in and be more professional on-air. “And then he got into the journalistic side: Make sure that Paul understands the sporting events and the things that he’s going to be saying on-air, not just babbling about things. He wanted his son to come off as professional and clean on-air. That’s the first communication I had, and I was thinking, ‘Who’s this parent trying to micromanage this whole situation?’ But they stayed in touch, Nick became a fan of the show in addition to a devoted father. Trip and Nick met in person a few months after that initial email at a basketball game – at Patrick Henry, appropriately – and the friendship grew. Nick became something of a surrogate father for Trip, whose actual father had died of cancer. Nick roped Wells into mountain biking – they often took annual bike trips together to places like the Greenbrier Trail in West Virginia – and they frequently hiked together in area parks, shared an inter-

est in yoga, and went on sushi “man-dates together, where Nick would get the Ninja vs. Samurai special. It’s safe to say Nick was multi-faceted. The man who loved literature turned me onto Howard Zinn’s “People’s History of the United States – not much of a reach for a man proud of his past union memberships, which includes the United Auto Workers and the Teamsters. Nick paid his way through college as a truck driver, and applied those same driving skills in the National Guard from 1970 to 1976, from which he earned an honorable discharge. As devoted as he was to his students and friends, Nick was more devoted to his family. He gave his wife, Dr. Christine Privitera, whom he married on Aug. 12, 1978, what he called the “Princess Treatment. He cooked. He did the laundry. He cleaned house – and did an excellent job of that as I can attest. He drove her to and from her pediatric practice when the weather turned foul. One of his specialties was his own pizzas, which he prepared every Sunday – and that he see NICK, pg. 15

Nick is survived by three brothers, Michael (Cathy), Louis (Shirley) and Al Jr. Nick graduated from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in 1966. He earned a B.A. from Canisius College in 1971, and a M.A. in English literature from Canisius College in 1976. Nick served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1970 until 1976, receiv-

ing an honorable discharge. Nick worked many jobs before becoming an English teacher, bartender, assemblyline worker in U.A.W. and teamster driver for Roadway Express. Nick started teaching at Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, Virginia in the spring of 1977; he taught there for the next 36 years. Nick taught all levels of English, from remedial to advanced. to produce the yearbook and school newspaper for 22 years, in addition to teaching journalism and english classes. Nick is survived by his wife, Dr. Christine Privitera, whom he met in Buffalo, New York in 1976. Nick and Christine were married August 12, 1978. Christine was a pediatrician for 40 years. Nick and Christine have two children, Laura Hosaflook (David) of Fredericksburg, Va. and Paul Liberante of Richmond, Va. They have two grandchildren, Rose, age 12 and Caleb, age 9. In addition to his teaching career, Nick was also a photographer. He started his photojournalism career by taking pictures for Hanover County’s Herald-Progress in 1994. He worked there on a part-time basis until 2016. Nick then worked for BH Media, which published the Mechanicsville

and Hanover Locals. As a photographer, Nick covered many events for featured and sports stories in Hanover County and Randolph-Macon College. After he retired from teaching, Nick also worked on a part-time basis for Candid Color Photography. He helped students and advisers with high school and middle school yearbooks and he did the yearbook for several elementary schools in Hanover County. Nick was diagnosed with a dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the abdomen in May of 2017. Nick enjoyed an active life. He loved to bike, mountain bike and just walk the trails at Poor Farm Park. He enjoyed working out at the local YMCA, lifting weights or doing yoga. He especially loved walks with his son, Paul and friend, Trip Wells along the Buttermilk and North

Bank Trails in Richmond. He also liked to banter over beers with teaching colleague, Ed Lynch. And he had a friend of almost 40 years, Haskins Rogers “Butch” Bell, a man of compassion and kindness. Christine Privitera was the love of Nick’s life. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Christine retired from her practice to be with Nick as his cancer progressed. They were two hard working people who raised a loving family. Christine - my love - you gave my life meaning. The family received friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2019, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland. Historic Hanover Tavern to host antique show and sale Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER -- Hanover Tavern Foundation is presenting its one-ofa-kind Antiques at the Tavern event May 3-5. Historic Hanover Tavern will host 20 hand-selected dealers offering for sale a variety of period furniture, ceramics, silver, pottery, jewelry, art, books, linens, folk art, and much more. All proceeds support the Hanover Tavern Foundation. The show opens Friday evening with a reception for those guests who appreciate the opportunity for early

shopping. There will be music, open bar, and hors d’oeurves. Antique collecting is affordable and fun for all ages. Antiques represent an age of quality craftsmanship, before mass production. It took years to learn a given trade where craftsman transitioned from apprentice to journeyman to master of the craft. This high-quality craftsmanship has resulted in durable pieces that are hundreds of years old, but are still useable today to mix and match with all decors. This is your chance to take home an original in which the beauty, design,

quality, and functionality are timeless! A new exhibit also will open at Historic Hanover Tavern the same weekend: Fired on the James: Nineteenth Century Stoneware of Virginiawill feature stoneware crafted by some of the most important potters of the area. Potters needed quality clay, water, and fuel to ply their craft and these were in abundance in the James River basin from Charles City County to Petersburg during the heyday of stoneware manufacturing. Utilitarian yet elegant, the bottles, jars, butter churns, chamber pots, jugs, pans, and crocks on display represent

some of the essential vessels in common use before the advent of commercially produced glass and metal storage containers. Those unfamiliar with pottery will be enchanted by the beauty of form, decoration, and function. View original works from some of the well-known James River potters such as Schermerhorn, Parr, Perry, Lowndes and DuVal. During the opening weekend, meet Curtis Rice, a recognized collector and expert in stoneware of the period. A complete catalog of the collection is available online at HanoverTavern. org. This show promises to be reward-

ing for existing collectors as well as eye-opening for the curious, new generation of collectors. This will truly be a memorable occasion; one that will become an annual favorite for all collectors, old and new. Preview Reception & Early Shopping will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 3 (advanced tickets required); 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 (tickets online or at the door); and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 5 (tickets online or at the door). Tickets may be purchased at HanoverTavern.org or by calling the Tavern at 804-537-5050.

‘The Crucible’ to be presented by Hanover Theatre Company By Penelope Fleming Special to The Local MECHANICSVILLE — The Hanover Theatre Company’s production of Arthur Miller’s classic play The Crucible will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 2-4, at Hanover High School. Tickets are $8 each. The Crucible is a fictionalized version of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials in which the playwright draws parallels between those events and the McCarthyism of his own time. \ It’s a tale that director Debra Clinton said she feels is still relevant today. Hanover Theatre Company (HTC) students suggested it to her as a possibility for their spring performance, having read and analyzed it in their English classes. “[There is] huge support from the

teachers due to the material,” Clinton said. She noted the value of “the visceral teaching of history through (age

appropriate) theatre.” Students participating in the production — many of them freshmen making their first attempt at acting

onstage with HTC — are gaining an insight into the difficulty of maintaining personal integrity in the face of contradictory public opinion. Clinton said she believes her talented actors are up to the task of

portraying the many distinctive characters populating the town of Salem, Massachusetts, during this troubled time in American history, and she encourages community members to be “witnesses” in the court.

There were days, usually Saturdays, when I would ask him if he could take an assignment, but he said no because he was on granddad duty. And that was all right with me. Rest in peace, Nick. Saturday’s meeting was an episode in a continuing political drama as Scott Wyatt, Cold Harbor District representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, bids to replace incumbent Del. Everyone gets entertained at Virginia Horse Festival Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com DOSWELL —There’s something for everyone at this year’s Virginia Horse Festival. The festival, which will run May 3-5 at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County, includes everything from canine capers to equine entertainment, pony petting, a Secretariat salute, a Derby Day party and a brand-new Derby Dash 5K race. “Although the festival is geared toward equestrians, there truly is something for everyone,” Stuart Sanders, the festival’s event manager, said. “This family-friendly event will be educational, entertaining and celebratory as well, giving nod to the property’s horse-racing legacy.” Featured attractions include the Aurora equestrian circus by Legacy Family Entertainment. The 30-minute performance includes aerialists, comedians, dancers, singers and trick riders. The horse extravaganza — created by two families with over 40 years’ combined equestrian performance experience — will be presented three times daily. The Canine Stars showcases multiple breeds and mixes of dogs that have been rescued or adopted from shelters. Each day they will thrill audiences with their canine antics, including freestyle disc catching, high jumping, agility and flyball racing. One of the dogs and its trainer, Sara Carson and Hero, made it to the finals of America’s Got Talent in 2017. Canine Stars will give three performances each day. For young attendees, there will be a Hokie Horse Education Station offering free activities starting at 11 a.m. daily. There also will be daily story time with children’s author Susan Williamson. She will regale festivalgoers with horse-themed stories at 1 p.m. in the Farm Bureau Center Friday through Sunday. Those who want to gallop the grounds like Secretariat and other famous horses once did can register for the inaugural Derby Dash 5K and 1-mile walk on May 4. Participants may register on race day. A race registration includes a commemorative T-shirt and admission to the festival. Proceeds will go toward rebuilding the recently burned Beaverdam Equestrian Center and to projects of the newly announced Secretariat Heritage

Center. Race time is 9 a.m., and the first-place winners in each category will receive a dozen roses in honor of Derby Day. For fans of the Kentucky Derby, a ticketed Derby Day party will feature Meadow Mint Julep Tram Tours around the historic barns; visits with Groundshaker, a great-great granddaughter of Secretariat; live music and a Derby hat contest; tours of the Meadow Champion Galleries, Triple Crown Room and the Chenery Collection in Meadow Hall; large-screen TVs to watch the race coverage; and a cocktail buffet of Derby fare with a Virginia flair. Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of Secretariat owner Penny Chenery, will premiere a film, Remembering Riva Ridge, produced by her brother John Tweedy. Riva Ridge was Secretariat’s older stablemate and was the first Meadow Stable horse to win the Derby. Riva’s win on May 6, 1972, fulfilled a lifelong dream of stable founder Christopher Chenery and catapulted his daughter Penny Chenery into the national spotlight. The Derby Day party will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $50, and complete festival and ticket information is available at VirginiaHorseFestival.com. There also will be a free Kentucky Derby viewing party presented by the town of Bowling Green. From 2:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, pre-race coverage and the Derby will be shown in the Farm Bureau Center on two 65-inch HDTVs. Derby-themed food and drinks will be available for purchase. For Secretariat lovers, the festival offers tram tours of the historic grounds where the famous racehorse was born. There also will be a plethora of official Secretariat merchandise available in the exhibit hall. And fans may ask for autographs from Tweedy or Leeanne Ladin, co-authors of Secretariat’s Meadow – The Land, The Family, The Legend. The festival also will include a wide variety of equine clinics, demonstrations and competitions. The JTO Trail Challenge will be open to competitors from across the state. Participants in this trail obstacle course will compete on Friday and Saturday, and the finale will be held Sunday. This year’s horse festival is presented by Your Local Ford Dealer. The Canine Stars is sponsored by Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance.

capacity room, and the mood only intensified as chairman Thomas Miller called the meeting to order and began addressing agenda items. With the convention scheduled for Saturday, Reynold questioned logistics surrounding the event, noting he was not convinced proper preparations were in place to accommodate an estimated 1,500 people expected to attend. More than 1,200 delegates have already been selected at mass meetings held at each of the District’s three units. There also was discussion regarding financial considerations and how the party would fund the upcoming

convention. Miller said that a $600 anonymous donation had been received to fund any additional costs. “Are these costs appropriate for the increased number of anticipated delegates, alternates and support staff?” Reynold asked. “The plan that we put together is flexible and we may need to change or modify things. I would hope that we could resume some administrative meetings to flush out any questions like that,” Miller said in response to Reynold’s question. Reynold asked if there was money available to fund those additional security costs that might arise from an overflow crowd.

“There are some people who will contribute anonymously to the convention, so that will not be a problem,” Miller responded. “Some have done so already.” The party reserved the gymnasium and auditorium at Hanover High School, as well as two additional classrooms for the convention. Hanover students also are scheduled to take SAT exams on Saturday, adding to the crowded conditions surrounding the convention, which is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. “If we were planning a wedding, we would have coordinated far more at this time,” Reynold said. “I was asking for an accounting of the donated funds.” New Kent representative

Mark Daniel said he had no objection to providing that information to the chair, but that didn’t quiet Reynold’s concerns regarding the funds. “So, we’re funding this convention operation with 1,300 people through anonymous donors or Political Action Committees (PACs). That seems swampy to me,” Reynold said. The committee approved a motion to increase the number of members on the convention committees from three to five, including one representative from each unit and one from each campaign. King William LDC representative John Hubbard joined Reynold in approving that motion by a 2-1 vote. But the main sticking point arose when the panel initiated a discussion regarding the rules and agenda of the upcoming convention. Miller, a non-voting chair, provided the committee with draft rules and a proposed agenda, but Hubbard moved to table that discussion until the next meeting. Following the meeting, Hubbard said he was not willing to vote on an agenda issue without having time to read and study the item. “I got put in a position here today where I was handed a very thick piece of paper and asked to vote on it on a moment’s notice,” Hubbard said. “It’s the kind of thing you need to have some time to consider.” The chairman ruled that motion out of order since there was not, in his opinion, enough time to schedule a meeting before the convention. “I don’t think we should

wait until Friday to discuss this,” Miller said. Daniel viewed the motion as more of an attempt to delay rather than discuss the issue, and suggested the committee review the rules and address any concerns at this meeting. “If you have a specific issue, then let’s talk about it,” Daniel said. Reynold and Hubbard called for a vote, but Miller ruled that action out of order and moved to the next agenda item. Reynold then moved to overrule the chair’s decision “I declare the motion to overrule the chair out of order. I declare the motion to table the rules out of order. This meeting is adjourned,” Miller said shortly before exiting the room. Reynold reminded Miller that adjournment required a motion that had not been made. “I’m sorry,” Miller responded. “You are sorry,” Reynold responded. “You cannot do that,” an attendee shouted. Hubbard then moved for adjournment with the commitment to reconvene at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 29, at the Atlee Library. That motion passed, so the Monday meeting was on the schedule. Jeffrey Adams, an attorney associated with the Wyatt campaign, said he feels confident the convention will go forward as planned largely due to the fact the process is well in motion. “A critical part of the process is mass meetings,” Adams said. “More than 1,600

Republicans gathered in three different venues to choose delegates to this convention and that’s already been done.” He also did not discount the role politics is playing in any and all decisions. “Two members of the committee for pure political reasons want to change the method of nomination.” Adams said the end goal of Peace’s campaign might be to make the convention a nonviable option. While Peace favored a primary to select the nominee, Wyatt supported the convention process. Following the meeting, Reynold also indicated a late change to the nominating process is unlikely but questions still remain unanswered. “I feel comfortable with a convention if the logistics and the public safety aspects are all in place so that we can be orderly,” Reynold said. Reynold, a former campaign manager for Gov. Bob McDonnell, said he’s seen this nominating process work consistently across the state but admitted this contest has been different. “This is sad. This has been a real shame to see this unit torn apart,” Reynold said. Asked if a change could occur at the Monday meeting, he replied, “There’s going to a discussion. You have to figure out how the logistics of 1,200 or 1,300 people at a high school where the SATs are taking place.” Hubbard and Reynold said they planned to attend Monday’s meeting, and Daniel was emphatic when asked if he will attend the Monday session. “Damn right.”

Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Hodnett

The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Donald, 547370, is a 2-year-old neutered male domestic shorthaired feline. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Donald is a very nice cat. He came to the shelter in early April. Donald has a sweet personality and loves people. He is playful and energetic. Donald also is well litter-trained. He will make a perfect house companion. Daphne, 511621, is a 5-year-old spayed female Labrador Retriever/Boxer mix. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Miss Daphne recently reached a milestone. She has officially been at the shelter for one year now. She is such a sweetheart that would love to have a forever home. Daphne does very well with people. She might do best being the only dog though. Daphne is very playful and loves to go on walks. She also has learned several commands. Please consider coming to the shelter to see her. For more information on these great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. Book ‘Icy Roads’ says that marriage is more than one night of passion

For more information, contact Kathy Redfearn, LCSW at 804675-4230.

Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com MECHANICSVILLE -- If you believe every story has two sides, and apply that logic to relationships, then it becomes easy to see why some unions are doomed. “Icy Roads” is the story of a couple who see their marriage differently. Janet is happy, deeply in love, and longs to start a family. Paul, her husband, has realized he should have thought past the wedding night. Life should not become a dull, settled routine when you’re young and successful. An accident causes Janet’s marital house of cards to collapse. Was it karma, God, the man behind the curtain, or Mother Nature who set in motion the events that night that would change her life and make her question how a person can forgive as God forgives when their heart is crushed, their life upended, and the unequal emotional equation of their marriage

is exposed? Author J.L.Canfield will be signing copies of her book from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at Books, Beads, and More at 8106 Mechanicsville Tpk. in Mechanicsville. “Just like a butterfly’s effects in nature, the ripples of our actions affect the many souls who take part in our human dramas. When a union dissolves, friends too must handle the aftermath damage it creates in their lives,” Canfield, a former seminarian and lifelong student of relationships, said. “The words ‘I’m sorry’, never bring healing fast enough when we’re struggling with the concept of forgiving. If they did, we’d all be less scarred, more whole.” “Icy Roads” is the story of one shattered person’s struggles with humanity versus divinity when forgiveness is the issue. The book is published by Black Rose Writing and will be released on Thursday, May 2.

The Hanover County Historical Society will be conducting free tours of the Old Hanover Courthouse on the Historic Courthouse Green from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every second Tuesday through December. Immanuel Church is a Virginia Historical Landmark and listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The origins of the parish date to the late 1 th century. The present brick church was constructed in 1853, largely due to the efforts of George Washington Bassett, grand-nephew of Martha Custis Washington. During the Civil War, the property served as a Union Army headquarters. Old Church Parish also has connections to The Rev.

Spanish and French students Spring Book Sale set May 3-4 need host families this summer at the Mechanicsville library

Host families are needed for students from Spain and France, ages 13 to 17, for three to four weeks this summer. As hosts, families have the opportunity to learn about the students’ cultures while he or she learns about living in an American family. The students are coming to practice their English and be a part of an American family doing what they do and going where they go. In addition to students eating fast food or

shopping at big box stores and malls, there also is the chance to expose them to a holiday meal like Thanksgiving. The students also may cook food from their country. “We have a variety of programs that suit working and non-working families,” local organizer Debbie Hardy said. “You can choose an independent stay program where the students just live with you, or our academic program where they are gone during the work-

This will be a rich experience for your family.” For more information, contact Debbie Hardy at 804-9093190 or debbiehardy2003@ yahoo.com.

R-MC women earn No. 2 seed in ODAC By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – After watching a 6-2 lead evaporate, the six seniors of Randolph-Macon women’s lacrosse weren’t about to let victory slip away. With a bye to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship semifinals hanging in the balance, two veterans took matters into their own hands. Hannah Jones, the leading scorer for the Yellow Jackets this season, seized possession out of a draw control, raced down the field and scored her 40th goal of the year to tie the match at eight with 13:03 remaining. “I did the first thing, now I’ve got to do the second thing and capitalize on getting the ball,” Jones recalled. “I looked to feed, but they watched me and denied my girls so I let it rip.” After watching Shenandoah scoring less than two minutes later to retake the lead, fellow senior Saunders Riley took over, tying the match with 7:33 left, then, three minutes later, scoring on a free position shot for the game-winner as the Yellow Jackets held on for a 10-9 heartstopping victory to finish the regular season second in the ODAC for the fifth straight season, punching their ticket to Saturday’s conference semifinals in Lexington. Randolph-Macon (11-6, 8-1 ODAC) struggled all after-

noon on the free position, while Shenandoah used it to erase the Yellow Jacket lead. The Hornets scored two goals while shorthanded, creating a mountain of momentum which the seniors knew had to be dismantled for them to leave Day Field one final time victorious. The final 13 minutes of action were a microcosm of a four-week stretch where the team went from a 2-5 record and struggling offensively to winners of nine of their last 10 matches. “They were upset that we lost early matches, but they knew we would be fine come conference time,” said head coach M.K. Geratowski. “They knew we would have to work our butts off, but they knew that those (early) games would prep them. We’ve gotten so much better, especially on the offensive end.” The 10-goal performance was the fewest in a win all season. Riley, now with 26 goals this season, recalled the last second advice of yet another senior, Abby Roth, that positioned her for the game-winning shot. “It was my third free position of the day and I went up in the middle hash and I heard Abby behind me say ‘Saunders, choose a side’,” Riley said. “So I chose a side and went to the left, shot right, and was able to

Hawks power, scrap way to sweep over Atlee By Jonathan Howard For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – The regular-season rematches between Hanover and Atlee baseball and softball were moved up a day to avoid the weekend rain and thunderstorms that were predicted to sweep through the region Friday. The earlier games enabled both Hawks teams to complete season sweeps of the Raiders a day early. Hanover baseball led off the night with a 7-0 victory and softball followed with a 5-0 win of their own, giving both teams season series victories over Atlee. On the baseball field, Sam Lipscombe played the role of offensive hero for the Hawks. The center fielder stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the second inning and crushed an 0-1 pitch over the center field fence for a grand slam. The home run was the first of the season for Hanover, and gave all the firepower starting pitcher Jack Goleski needed to earn the win. After quickly retiring Hanover in the first inning, Atlee starter Brannon Mantlo struggled with his control in the second. The senior began the inning by walking Goleski and John Mardigian. After a sacrifice bunt by Caleb Gorman moved both runners up, Mantlo walked Brandon Taylor to load the bases. The pitcher relieved some pressure by forcing an out at home on a grounder back to the pitcher, but Lipscombe came through for the Hawks in the pressure situation. “I was sitting on a fastball,” Lipscombe said. “I knew [Mantlo] wasn’t going to throw a curveball because he hadn’t thrown a strike in a while. I was

Dave Lawrence/The Local

sitting on the second pitch and it was right there, so I just took a swing at it.” With a four-run cushion to work with, Goleski settled into a groove. He finished with 10 strikeouts and allowed only two hits over six innings of work. “Early I was missing on my fastball, but I think the pitch that was there all night was my curveball. I had good command of it all night long,” Goleski said.

Above, Hanover’s Sam Lipscombe (5) roars on the way to the dugout after belting a grand slam in the second inning of the Hawks’ 7-0 victory over host Atlee Thursday. Far left, Hanover’s Jack Mardigian (14) leaps as he sees teammate Sam Lipscombe’s fly ball clear the fence. Mardigian was the first of the four runners to score, along with Jordan Watkins, Caydon Richardson and Lipscombe. Left, Hanover’s Ellen Palya knocks in a run in the third inning of the Hawks’ 5-0 win over Atlee Thursday.

“I just felt comfortable with it, and once we got those four runs I just stopped trying to overthrow my fastball, hit spots and just work with the lead.” Goleski helped his own cause with a RBI single in the third inning. Colby Hutnan added an RBI single in the fifth while Gorman brought home a run on a fielder’s choice in the

seventh. Atlee threatened to make a sixth-inning rally in Goleski’s final inning of work. Jayce Catterton led off the inning with a single and Tucker Bratton followed by reaching on an error. Following a strikeout, Tyler Warren reached on a walk to load the bases. However, Hayden Harris grounded into

a double play that included an interference call on the base paths to end the threat. Eric Anderson closed out the game for the Hawks in the seventh. On the softball diamond, Hanover used small ball to shut out Atlee. Hanover’s five runs came on the back of six base hits. Leslie Currie led off the game with a single for the

Hawks and scored on a wild pitch two batters later. The Hawks would go on to score another run on a wild pitch, another on a throwing error and two on sacrifices. Hanover head coach Mike Rohr credited his team’s awareness on the base paths with helping the Hawks score against Atlee. “We’re just trying to be aggressive. The girls are really buying into it and really anticipating really well,” Rohr said. “We did a good enough job putting the ball in play and making things happen on the bases that we got a couple runs out of it.” The Raiders appeared poised to answer Hanover’s initial score in the bottom half of the first as Kelly Ayer led off the game with a sharply hit double. However, the hit would prove to be an outlier for the home team. Atlee would produce only three hits against Hanover starter Ellen Palya, who struck out seven batters and received good support from her defense. “Palya has been fantastic, I can’t say enough about her, and our defense has been really solid. ... It’s a good combination,” Rohr said. Regan Patrick provided an RBI in the second inning for Hanover, scoring Savannah Thorne on a sacrifice, who led off the inning with a double. Palya helped her own cause, adding an RBI on a sacrifice in the third. Rylan Hubbard tripled in the win. Kara Hammock was a bright spot on the mound for Atlee, striking out eight batters over five innings of relief. Her outing started out rocky in the third, allowing a run and a pair of singles, but she recovered to strike out the side in the fourth. Jonathan Howard can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

Early challenges make Hawks finish stronger By Nick Vandeloecht Richmond Suburban News POWHATAN – Right away to open the season, the Hawk girls lacrosse team was challenged. They endured a tough stretch against strong opponents – Trinity Episcopal, Douglas Freeman, Deep Run and county rival Atlee all among them. “We’re playing some really tough area teams to start the season, which kind of gives us a little bit of a rude awakening and tells us how we need to up our game in practice to get ready for the rest of the season,” said head coach Matt Ellinghaus. “It gives us the ability to kind of jumpstart things; even though we start with a few losses … we’re able to kind of build from that and finish strong.” The Hawks (5-4) were now on a three-game win streak following a 10-4 victory over Powhatan on April 23.

“We’ve come off a couple of good wins, and so we’re kind of gelling as the season’s progressed,” Ellinghaus said. “It was a rough start, but things are working well and we’re starting to see our passes a lot better now.” The Hawks never trailed, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals from senior Madison Pfister and Lauren Kasper and leading as high as 9-2. Ellinghaus said that Kasper has been incredibly consistent for the Hawks this season, scoring three to five goals a game. Against Powhatan, the sophomore totaled a game-high four goals. Pfister and freshman Meghan Malpass scored two goals apiece, and senior Emily Pavey and sophomore Teagan Quinn had one each. Senior Brandilyn Williamson contributed two assists and Kasper, Quinn and freshman Chloe Deved each made one. see STRONGER, pg. 29

against the previously undefeated Raiders. Valentine started the scoring early, giving St. Christopher’s complete control from the start. The Saints ended the first quarter with a 5-0 lead. “Getting off to a fast start was really important,” said St. Christopher’s coach John Burke. The Raiders were able to generate a few quality scoring chances in the second, but just one – a shot by Atlee’s Mason

Walczak – would get past St. Christopher’s goalie Walker Wallace, who finished the game with 13 saves. “If our goalie is hot like Walker was tonight, we’re tough to score on,” said Burke. Westfall scored twice in the second to pad the Saints’ lead to eight entering the half. of his six goals to push the Saints’ advantage to 13-2. Atlee was able to put together some zone time in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too great to overcome for the Raiders (9-1). It was dominance from start to finish for the Saints. “Getting up early allowed us to dictate a little more tempo and get some momentum,” Burke said. At the beginning of this season, the Saints were set on playing consistent on both ends of

season, adding to the record for most wins in a season in program history. Entering 2019, that record was 10. It took eight minutes for the Yellow Jackets (7-3, 13-4) to fire up the offense, as Colin DiSesa (Hanover) fed senior Ty Anderson for a goal at 6:49 in the first period, kick starting a 4-0 run over the next two and a half minutes. Up 5-1 after one, RandolphMacon put up six unanswered goals and led 11-1 at the half, an appropriate offensive output given that 11 seniors were hon-

ored just before play began. DiSesa ended the afternoon with five goals and two assists, while Anderson netted four goals, and Ryan Tiffey added a pair of goals and two assists. Senior defender Tanner McClelland scored his first career goal with 5:57 remaining, sending the Yellow Jacket crowd onto their feet. Remembering Nick Liberante, 1949-2019

Commentary by Dave Lawrence

The image at left is one of my favorites of all of Nick’s work for the Mechanicsville Local. It shows Patrick Henry placekicker Aaron Martinez getting mobbed by by teammates Jordyn Roth and Justin McCowan after Martinez kicked an extra point that turned out to be the game winner in the Patriots’ 7-6 victory over ninth-ranked Henrico on Sep. 23, 2016. Below, Nick’s advanced novel students conspire to haul him out of his classroom — not that he minded (courtesy of Scott Jackson). Bottom right, Nick tries and fails to hid behind a stack of dictionaries (courtesy of Rob Witham). Top right, Nick took this portrait of Sam Rogers at Rogers’ last home game at Virginia Tech. Above, action and reaction as Lee-Davis tight end Jalen Hargrove catches a 47-yard touchdown pass while one of his teammates celebrates.

Nick Liberante — Mr. Lib to many of his former students — is no longer with us in body, but he left a lasting legacy in terms of the impact he had on everyone blessed enough to know him. And then there are the photos by him and of him ... 30

Local teen taking talents to Texas By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com Abram Dean’s “first real thing” in terms of performing paid off earlier this year when he captured the title of Hanover Junior Idol. Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream. On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group. Debbie said she suggested Abram enter the Hanover Arts and Activities Centersponsored Idols competition because he “wants to get into this music thing, so let’s see TEEN, pg. 14 `

Covenant Woods among recipients of Stormwater Local Assistance Fund Staff Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND -- The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has awarded 15 localities – including $413,080 to retrofit the Covenant Woods and Rose Hill Wet Pond -- across the commonwealth with $20 million from this year’s Stormwater Local Assistance Fund (SLAF). The SLAF program, managed by DEQ, provides matching grants to localities for improvement projects that implement cost-effective best management practices. This year’s awards will support 24 projects that will reduce water pollution across the state. The grants represent the fifth round of SLAF funding, created by the Virginia General Assembly in 2013. This year’s applications were evaluated and ranked in priority.

This year, DEQ received a total of 59 applications from 34 localities for projects totaling more than $39 million. Funding for this round ranges from $82,000 to a maximum of $4 million. To date, more than $80 million in SLAF funding has been awarded to support 193 stormwater improvement projects across the commonwealth. “This stormwater funding is vital to assist our partners in local government to improve their streams and the health of the Chesapeake Bay,” said Secretary of Natural Resources Matthew J. Strickler. “As the Commonwealth prepared its new plan for a cleaner Chesapeake Bay, the Phase 3 Watershed Implementation Plan, we heard clearly from local governments that this funding support is essential to meeting our comprehensive goals.” “Under heavy rainfall many conventional stormwater drainage systems may be overwhelmed and route runoff to

streams and rivers,” said DEQ Director David Paylor. “This increases pollution and results in degradation over time. SLAF funding provides matching grants to help communities install effective and efficient pollution-control measures such as stream restorations, constructed wetlands and methods to filter rainwater before it washes pollution into waterways.” In addition to Hanover County, localities receiving funding include: Albemarle County, Alexandria, Alexandria, Charlottesville, Chesterfield County, Fairfax County, Fairfax County. Harrisonburg, Henrico County, Hopewell City, Hopewell, Newport News, Prince George County. Prince William County, Roanoke County and Stafford County. For more information about DEQ’s stormwater program, visit https://www. deq.virginia.gov/Programs/Water/ StormwaterManagement.aspx.

SEAC accepting applications ASHLAND -- The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) is accepting online applications through Wednesday, May 15. The SEAC seeks to promote educational excellence for students with disabilities by encouraging collaborative partnerships, supporting an inclusive educational environment, and highlighting recommended best practices

that will prepare students for productive citizenship. For more information, contact Diane Brown, director of Special Education, at 804-365-4500 or dbrown@hcps.us. Information submitted by Chris R. Whitley, Hanover County Public Schools public information officer.

Hanover Salutes to honor those going into military Staff Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND – High school seniors who are enlisted in the military, have received an ROTC Scholarship, or an appointment at a military academy are invited to take part in the 3rd Annual Hanover Salutes program. Hanover County Public Schools wants to honor those with career plans involving the military. Hanover Salutes is an evening to recognize students making a commitment to serve in the United States Armed Forces after graduation. The program will be held on Friday, May 31, at Hanover High School, beginning with a reception (including a full dinner) at 5 p.m., followed by a ceremony at 6 p.m. in the auditorium.

Hanover County Public Schools

Students are educated in music through a variety of musical instruments and experiences.

Hanover schools named Best Community for Music Education ASHLAND – The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation has named Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS) as a “Best Community for Music Education” for the seventh year in a row. Hanover County is one of only 18 school divisions in the Commonwealth of Virginia to achieve the coveted status. The NAMM Foundation awards this designation to divisions and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment to offering comprehensive music education to all students. It further serves to recognize the outstanding efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education part of the curriculum. Barry Flowe, Performing Arts Curriculum Specialist, said, “To qualify for the Best

Communities designation, we had to answer detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, and overall support for our school music programs. We have highly trained teachers, delivering high quality instruction, in a school division and community that highly values music education!” The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit organization that serves to advance music education and participation around the world.
