MECHANICSVILLE — A week after a group of Hanover County Republicans met and selected what they thought was the 97th District Republican nominee for a House of Delegates seat currently held by Chris Peace, it’s looking less likely that result is definitive as both camps scramble to solidify their claims on the title.

Scott Wyatt supporters claim last week’s convention was the legitimate and chosen method for 97th District Republicans to select their candidate.

To do anything else, in their view, would disenfranchise the more than 1,700 delegates who have already been authorized.

Peace continues to abide by a Republican Party of Virginia statement that supports the District’s Legislative District Committee (LDC) decision to scrap the convention and schedule a canvass-style election for June 1.

Late last week, the RPV posted the call on their website seemingly clearing the way for the June 1 Firehouse Primary where any Republican can show up and vote for the candidate of their choice.

Peace supporters contend that method allows more voters to participate in the process and no voters are disenfranchised.

Senior Rides program pays tribute to volunteer drivers

H

ANOVER -- The Hanover County Senior Rides program, which provides transportation for senior adults who need rides to the doctor and other necessary places, recognized its volunteers at a meeting held on April 9 at the Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Mechanicsville.

According to Charles Rasnick, program director, the program has made great strides since 2013 when it began with only five drivers and eight active clients.

There are now 36 volunteers in the Mechanicsville and Ashland areas and these volunteers have RASNICK provided about 875 rides so far in 2019.

Rasnick and other supporters of the program gave much of the credit to the program’s drivers and other volunteers.

Hanover Senior Rides program is a joint effort between MCEF (Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions) and ACES (Ashland Christian Emergency Services).

A major portion of this service is funded by a federal grant awarded to Senior Connections, another partnering agency.

Hanover County recently applied for the same federal grant, which would allow this free service to be extended to residents living in the western part of the county.

Although MCEF and ACES subsidize the co-pay for supplemental rides, currently, western Hanover residents pay a $6 co-pay for the service.

HANOVER – The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office will be hosting its 31st session of the Citizens Police Academy from Sept.

10 through Nov. 12.

The academy will be held every Tuesday between the hours of 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. at the Sheriff ’s Office. There will be no cost for the participants.

The program is available to Hanover residents, business owners, or employees who are at least 21 years of age. Applicants must be willing to submit to a background check. Class size is limited and applicants will be selected on a first-come, first-accepted basis.

School used to be considered a very safe place

County woman shares struggle with breast cancer

I

remember when the biggest concern about going to school was writing a term paper or essay on Sunday night because it was due Monday morning. Well, that all changed in 1999 when two seniors at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, gunned down 12 students and a teacher.

I was four months into the editor’s position at a daily newspaper in southwestern West Virginia when the massacre occurred. Being new to the job my schedule was all over the place as I was settling in and working with the staff. I wasn’t scheduled to work on April 22, 1999, when the news broke about the shootings.

But, when you’re the editor, you become

involved in significant news events regardless of where you are or what you’re doing. By phone, assignments were being doled out in pursuit of this unthinkable story.

Despite being in a state of shock, school districts across the country started taking precautions. Sadly, those efforts haven’t slowed the number of school and college/university shootings.

My heart ached for the family of Riley Howell, who sacrificed his life for his fellow students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on April 30. If there ever was a hero, it was Howell.

Parents and guardians of Hanover County Public Schools students should appreciate Col. David R. Hines and the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office for placing resource officers in as many schools as possible. They are certainly an addi-

tional measure of security for those precious children in their classrooms.

There is no comprehending the evil that stirs within someone who can randomly walk into a school and start shooting. And where are children on the radar of their parents? How involved are they with what their students are doing before, during and after school?

I pray the day returns when sending your child off to school isn’t a major worry. I can’t imagine the fear some parents experience when they watch their child step onto a school bus to start another day of learning.

The hope is that the day returns when there’s a special kind of excitement for students and parents as a new school day arrives -- and the idea of someone bringing weapons is left to history.

Gambler’s winning streak has Jeopardy buzzing

By Jim Ridolphi for Contributing Columnist For the sake of full disclosure, I am not a Jeopardy watcher or even what you could consider a fan of the longrunning game show.

I don’t recognize some of the places or names that often appear in the clues, and the whole thing seems intimidating at times.

But, I often watch bits and pieces

of the show, especially if it’s nearing Final Jeopardy where the odds and excitement reach a crescendo.

While flipping through the channels a couple of weeks ago, I was immediately fixed to an image of a robot-like human being providing questions to every answer in rapidfire fashion. Even a novice observer like me could readily realize something special was happening on a show that is one of the longest run-

For example, someone who walked away with, say, $35,000 was a fairly respectable one-day winner. The average daily winner is around $20,000, but this new record-holder regularly tallies his winnings at $75,000.

This man plays the game like an

addicted gambler yanking on the lever of a stubborn slot machine, sure that the bandit would soon pay off.

(Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Kelly Williams of Montpelier. She said she wrote the letter to address her struggle with Stage IV breast cancer.)

I have Stage IV (metastatic) breast cancer -- also known as MBC. There is no cure for MBC; oncologists keep patients alive until the disease eventually takes their lives.

Basically, I will die of breast cancer; it might be today, it might be in 10 years -- but it will come eventually.

My oncologist gave me the grim statistics: For metastatic breast cancer patients, 20% will live 5 years; only 10% will live 20 years. The only thing I could do when diagnosed is to take one step at a time and hope I was part of the 10%.

Unfortunately, only around 7% of research dollars goes to study cures for MBC. The number fluctuates but it’s small nonetheless. Researchers use tissues for their samples of people with early-stage disease, not those with MBC. The issue is that 116 people will die of MBC every day and 115,000 will be diagnosed with it.

After my oncologist’s visit the first time, I looked on the internet for some type of support group but couldn’t find one in my area (Richmond). My oncologist offered one but it was open to all cancer patients, not just those with MBC. I didn’t really find much information on MBC online but I did come across an organization whose focus is breast cancer, especially MBC: Living Beyond Breast Cancer (lbbc.org) a nonprofit organization in Pennsylvania. They offer information and support for those with MBC. Each year they hold a major conference on MBC in April where they have keynote speakers who talk about the latest research on MBC and what see LETTERS, pg. 8

So, as this guy began counting hit totals in terms of millions, not thousands, I became almost a regular watcher and became a devoted member of a fan club that never answers the phone between 7:30 and 8 p.m.

It took James Holzhauer just 14 games to hit the million-dollar mark. Only one other contestant, legendary Ken Jennings, has reached that amount and it took him 33 games to achieve it.

Adding to the reality of the current winning streak, Holzhauer is not exactly what you would describe as bubbly, and he often seems bored even with the show’s iconic host, Alex Trebek.

But, once the board is revealed and the categories posted, Holzhauer approaches the challenge like a starving man staring down a heaping plate of beef stew.

The ratings of the show got a boost as Holzhauer began winning, and viewers tuned in to see his routine shellacking of the competition. The other contestants almost seem apologetic when they finally get to provide a question, and they almost immediately surrender to his prowess with the clicker.

The buzz around the show isn’t hurting either, and some say the phenomenon is just what the aged show needed to gain a new audience.

But, every rose has its thorn, and in this case, Holzhauer might be the devil in sheep’s clothing. His increased winnings are placing a financial

But, the publicity surrounding Holzhauer’s journey probably offset those additional costs, and advertisers know how to spot a hot item.

Another downside of Holzhauer’s genius might present in another form, one that became apparent to me as I watched a replay of the show this weekend. Three normal contestants seemed to struggle with answers Holzhauer would have easily responded, and by Double Jeopardy, I felt like I was watching a preseason NFL football game. The rapid-fire rate of the game, the failure to answer incorrectly, and everything else surrounding the current winning streak were absent.

So, is there a danger of Holzhauer killing the golden goose? Probably not. But, the contestants who follow him will have a tough time convincing audiences they have the same mastery of subject matter that Holzhauer obviously has.

“He’s making the other players look dumb,” one fan posted. Another screamed, “He has to be cheating.”

Let’s face it. Most of us feel dumb when compared with Holzhauer, but his day too will come and he’ll fade into the sunset with his millions of dollars and a lifetime of notoriety.

And I’ll finally know the answer to at least one Jeopardy question. And the answer is James Holzhauer.

John was predeceased by his parents, John Hanley Rice and Catherine Baumann Rice; and his youngest son, Christopher L. Rice. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Lori; children, Jennifer C. Rice and John Erik Rice; stepchildren, Wesley A. Russell (Michelle) and Arwen E. Russell; and four granddaughters. John was an only child and spent his youth in Kentucky and Ohio.

He moved to Mechanicsville during high school and graduated from Lee Davis. After studying for a year at RPI, he enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star.

Afterwards, he was employed

by DuPont DeMours Company, where he worked for 39 years as a pipefitter and master plumber. John had

recent years.

“The big reason for that is we have a petulant man-child for a president who routinely lies, attacks the free press, the FBI . . . and welcomes help from foreign adversaries,” Suddarth said.

Guests enjoyed dinner catered by Ashland Coffee and Tea, a selection of wine and other spirits accompanied by music by guitarist Mark Brumitt.

Although the food drew high marks from the packed room at the Montpelier Center for Arts and Education, the

highlight of the evening followed as Spanberger and Warner took the stage.

Spanberger, who grew up in neighboring Henrico and attended Tucker High School, told an enthusiastic audience that she looked forward to the day when Hanover could invite its own Democratic representative to address the crowd.

MONTPELIER -- Ten years ago, a group of about 50 Hanover Democrats gathered for what became the Blue Moon Bash, an annual fundraiser for county party members.

Throughout the decade, the event has attracted the party’s most notable names to address the group, and the recent tenth anniversary Blue Wave Bash kept that tradition alive.

U.S. Sen. John Warner, D-Va., was joined by U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger, R-7, as they

addressed an enthusiastic group of more than 200 supporters.

Toni Radler, Hanover County Democratic party chair, said this year’s event shattered both attendance and fundraising records from past events. “It’s really wonderful to see all of these people here,” she said.

John Suddarth, this year’s Blue Wave Bash organizer, said the event had raised more than $20,000 to support nine Democratic candidates in Hanover. He noted the event had quadrupled in size in

Innovation Day brings BPES and VCU students together

Innovation Day, a collaboration between Battlefield Park Elementary School and the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) College of Engineering recently was held at BPES. Students and faculty from VCU come to BPES to teach engaging STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) lessons. This is the second year in the partnership. The students are inspired to problem solve, work together, and try new ideas. The day also encourages all students to pursue careers in the diverse field of engineering. It is considered a highlight of the year at the school.

Carol and EZ, a top agility team, met tough standards to qualify for this competition. During the event, they ran timed agility courses, off- leash, striving for a perfect score of 100. Any missed obstacles or other mistakes resulted in penalty faults which are deducted from the score.

Spanish and French students need host families this summer

Host families are needed for students from Spain and France, ages 13 to 17, for three to four weeks this summer.

As hosts, families have the opportunity to learn about the students’ cultures while he or she learns about living in an American family.

The students are coming to practice their English and be a part of an American family doing what they do and going where they go. In addition to students eating fast food or

shopping at big box stores and malls, there also is the chance to expose them to a holiday meal like Thanksgiving. The students also may cook food from their country.

“We have a variety of programs that suit working and non-working families,” local organizer Debbie Hardy said.

I became interested in the organization, not just as an MBC patient, but as a volunteer. It gives me the chance to feel like I’m doing something about this awful disease; I’m trying to do my part.

I was diagnosed originally with MBC in November of 2015. It had metastasized (spread) to my bones too. My entire skeleton had lesions on it.

Not only was there a tumor in my breast to worry about, there also were my bones at issue.

Since then I’ve been on two courses of treatment that didn’t work; by October of 2016, my oncologist put me on the regimen I’m on now. I have been stable with no spread of the disease since then. It’s been over two years. Boy, do I feel lucky.

To those who have been diagnosed with MBC, know that you don’t have to go through it alone; there is information and support out there for you.

And there is hope. And know that there are others out

Chris Peace and his impending primary (against, I guess, Scott Wyatt). The Local’s front page story (May 8) of “unannounced cancellation” seems symptomatic of painful disorganization within the supposed Wyatt camp.

Now, as I have not followed Mr. Wyatt (doesn’t seem worth the effort), I cannot say anything about him with any knowledge or forethought.

I will say that it’s painfully evident that he is a “TEA Party hero” (TEA Party no longer exists officially; replaced by the “Freedom Party”) . . . go figure !!

That said; I will now give a brief summation of Chris Peace

The first time was a pleasant surprise because I met him at one of the county transfer stations. He was at the recycling station -- a Republican caring enough about the environment to stop and take time and effort to recycle.

(Hey, Hanover County government folks, ya wanna make some more revenue? Charge “dumpers” $20 a visit and let the recyclers come in for free!).

Chris Peace was doing his own recycling. That impressed me (much like Joe Biden did in 1972-1973 when he took the DC Metro to work each day as a freshman senator) to the nth degree.

These folks (party-bedamned) were exercising humility. Being a humble servant to the people is what makes a great politician. Not tribalism. Not hate. Not racism. Not faking wealth or faking courage (and then insulting Vietnam War veterans when you received five deferments for “hurted widdle feets”).

Local teen taking talents to Texas

By Melody Kinser mkinser@mechlocal.com Abram Dean’s “first real thing” in terms of performing paid off earlier this year when he captured the title of Hanover Junior Idol.

Thanks to some encouragement from his mom Debbie Lunsford, he took the leap into the world of music. And now the 16-year-old from Mechanicsville is preparing to move to Texas to pursue his dream.

On Aug. 20, Abram and his mother will head to Dallas where he has been accepted to study — and hone his skills — with the Linda Septien Entertainment Group.

Debbie said she suggested Abram enter the Hanover Arts and Activities Centersponsored Idols competition because he “wants to get into this music thing, so let’s see TEEN, pg. 14 `

School district again expects full accreditation For the ninth consecutive year, Hanover County Public Schools will again receive 100 percent full accreditation.

According to Dale S. Theakston, communications specialist, the accreditation is determined based on the 200910 Standards of Learning assessments. Preliminary information from the Virginia Department of Education indicates the accreditation status.

Final accreditation reports are expected on Sept. 15.

County receives VACo honor Hanover County has been recognized by the Virginia Association of Counties as the recipient of the 2010 Achievement Award for the Dominion Resources Greentech Incubator.

The county was honored for its model local government program in the category of Community/Economic

Development.

ASHLAND – During the Tuesday, May 7, regular meeting, Ashland Town Council unanimously approved a contract with Amtrak, clearing the way for a $3 million improvement project upgrading platforms on both sides of the track at the Ashland Train Station.

The improvements will provide ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessibility in both directions and upgrade landscaping surrounding the station.

Negotiations with Amtrak regarding the project began in 2017, and Town Manager Joshua Farrar told council members a design plan was approved last year.

Farrar also outlined a process where town officials became aware of a requirement that would have required costs for the project be absorbed by the locality. Through negotiations, Amtrak eventually agreed to foot the bill. The town will spend $25,000 on enhanced landscaping, a project already contained in the approved budget.

If the deal currently outlined failed to gain council approval, it was unclear of Amtrak’s agreement to pay would still be valid, and the town could have been responsible for the costs of the project.

Council’s main concern regarding the project centered on the disruption to area businesses associated with the project; and the town’s limited impact as the construction progresses.

Farrar said the project will be managed by Amtrak, and contracts have already been awarded for the project. He

said the town’s role will be “an advocate for those businesses.�

Town officials will coordinate with the contractor to minimize disruption to special events and ensure accessibility to businesses is not impeded.

Farrar said he expects few street closings due to the project, but there will be inconvenience during the 14- to 18-month project.

Construction is expected to begin in May or June.

In other matters, Police Chief Doug Goodman recognized Investigator Matthew Hileman’s 30 years of service with the department prior to his retirement last month.

The veteran officer was named Officer of the Year in

2002 and received more than 75 citizens commendations among numerous other awards during his three-decade career. “I will tell you during my tenure here, there has been no better advocate for a victim of a crime,� Goodman said as he recognized Hileman. “There’s also been no better advisor to me. He will always have my gratitude.�

Apparently, Ashland’s mystique is gaining worldwide attention thanks to a recent visit by an Italian train enthusiast.

While in Ashland, Sergio Vadora established friendships with local residents, including Caroline Coronado.

Ned and Marla Coleman, who live in Studley, recently visited the village of Studley, England.

Studley, pronounced, "Stod-lei," is located in the English West Midlands in Warwickshire County. The village is near Stratford-on-Avon.

The name is old English and refers to a pasture where horses are kept.

The English village predates the arrival of William the Conquerer in 1066 and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

The Hanover County community of Studley has existed since the 1600s when it was one of several local villages or ports that included the Pamunkey River village of Hanovertown. Studley is the name of the early plantation owned by John Syme that became the birthplace of Patrick Henry.

Council members urged residents to become involved and voice concerns important to their neighborhoods. “We invite citizens to come out and express whatever is on their minds,� Mayor Steve Trivett said.

Council also approved a Robinson Street sidewalk and

walkway project that should improve pedestrian access to the Ashland Theatre and other areas. The project is expected to cost no more than $50,000.

Council also passed an employees’ longevity program designed to assist the town in retaining employees with multiple years of experience and addressing the problem of salary compression. Farrar suggested a first step in that program would be rewarding employees with 25 years of service with a 4% salary increase.

Council unanimously approved the employee longevity program.

help them learn tech creatively and tied into their content area. I go into a classroom to provide hands-on support. I teach all subjects at all grades level with the teachers.”

A highlight in her career has been seeing students she had in the first grade loop around through the middle school years to their high school graduation. “That was one of the best experiences for me. I literally saw them grow up and it’s amazing. I keep in contact with a lot of my kids from Pennsylvania.”

As for what her future

may hold in education, the mother of two said, “It’s funny how your priorities change when you have children, and I thought at one point I’ll go into curriculum and instruction. When I fell into technology I just found a groove that I was good at and I really enjoyed doing.”

In a modest tone, Mara talked about a first year teacher who told her “You’ve made such a difference for me -- you don’t realize the difference you’re making at Liberty.”

When Mara was named Teacher of the Year, that teacher asked her, “Do you believe me now?”

Lee-Davis uses big sticks to sweep Hawks

By Rob Witham and Dave Lawrence Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Two swings, two huge plays, on two different fields, and within five minutes of each other.

Carter Trice’s three-run blast in the third inning for Lee-Davis baseball, just before 8 p.m., gave the Confederates a lead they would not relinquish, ending years of frustration with rival Hanover with a 5-2 victory Friday night.

Just after 8 p.m., Savanah Henley took the first pitch of her at-bat in the fifth inning over the center field fence for a three-run home run to give LeeDavis softball the lead for good in a 4-2 win over a Hanover team which had defeated the Confederates 6-0 three weeks earlier.

In the baseball victory, Trice went to the plate feeling confident.

“When I went up, I thought, I’m going to hit an absolute nuke for my team,” Trice said. “I thought it was a routine fly ball, because the wind was blowing in.”

Instead, it cleared the fence as he approached second base, where he realized he could trot the rest of the way. The game, however, was far from over. Hanover, which took a 2-0 first inning lead on a Blake Doggett home run, loaded the

bases in the sixth. Head Coach Tyler Johnson sent in Connor Sorokowski to relieve starter Jalen Stratmann. Sorokowski got a strikeout and a lineout to second to end the threat.

Despite needing relief, Johnson was thrilled with the starting performance of Stratmann.

“As a starter, Jalen has struggled this year. He’ll tell you

that,” Johnson explained. “But he wanted the ball. When you have a kid who wants the ball in a big situation, you give it to him.”

Sorokowski sent the Hawks

down in order to clinch the win, the first for any current Lee-Davis player over Hanover.

Now the key for Johnson is to make sure this win is not the peak of the Confederates’ sea-

son.

The victory puts Lee-Davis at 11-6 going into the final week of the regular season and fighting for seeding in Region 5B with the likes of Mills Godwin, Deep Run, and archrival Atlee, which handed the Confederates a 15-0 defeat a week earlier.

Thus, a victory over a Hanover team that is now 16-2 does wonders for both Lee-Davis’ confidence and its power-point rating.

In softball, Henley’s shot came at a critical juncture. She and Hanover starter Ellen Palya put zeros on the scoreboard until Palya doubled to open the top of the fourth, scoring on a Savannah Thorne single for a 1-0 lead. An inning later, Addison Walter reached on an error and advanced to third.

Julia Mardigian singled her home for a 2-0 Hanover lead.

In the home half of the fifth, Lee-Davis catcher Jewel Wagner singled. Courtesy runner Lauren Bowman advanced to second on a sacrifice, then to third when a Lauren Taylor blooper fell in between Hawk defenders in shallow center field.

Madison McLaughlin singled to score Bowman, bringing Henley to the plate, where she took a different approach to this at-bat.

We always know there’s going to be a battle when we come over here. I think this is our fourth year playing them, and usually the games are pretty close. … They just had one bad inning. We put some good swings on some balls, made some good things happen. We

Players and coaches from both sides said the tumultuous contest was one of the best games they’ve ever been a part of.

“It was one of the best ones we’ve played in a long time. Hanover was terrific, they competed from the first pitch to the last. It was a great atmosphere,” said Benedictine coach Sean Ryan. “This is a great way to prepare us for the playoffs.”

“The inning snowballed on us,” Ryan said. “We just tried to keep our composure.”

Woolfolk said his Cadets weren’t fazed.

“It was just keeping our emotions straight. We never had doubt in anybody on our team,” he said.

Benedictine starter Casey Green went seven innings and allowed three runs, all unearned. After the second inning, he settled into a groove.

“You can either let the damage get you down or you can stop the bleeding right there,” Green said. “I decided that was gonna be it. And I

trust my offense to get me four runs.”

Hanover starter Eric Anderson threw six-and-twothirds innings and surrendered three runs. He was able to keep the Cadets off balance most of the evening, mixing in his breaking ball in all counts and dotting his fastball on the corners.

“If you can mix in pitches like that, throw multiple pitches for strikes, you’ll be good to go,” Anderson said.

With Hanover (151) up 3-2 in the top of the sixth, Anderson struck out Benedictine designated hitter Jack Anderson to strand the tying run on second base. He turned and roared to the dugout and throng of Hawks fans in attendance.

“I had so much energy built up, I kept trying to keep myself calm,” Anderson said.

“The feeling of getting the last out just pumps me up. It was a huge turnout. … Both teams fought hard till the end.”

When you are RandolphMacon head coach Ray Hedrick and have the all-time winningest pitcher in the history of your program ready and able, you feel confident. But with some extra eyes on Nick Roth III, it took him some time to settle in.

You wouldn’t know it from the scoreboard, as Roth shut out Virginia Wesleyan for the first six innings while his Yellow Jacket teammates grabbed a 4-0 lead. “We would have preferred to play somebody and beat them,

but the way it works, you want to be in the position that we were in should something like this happen,” said RandolphMacon head softball coach Kevin Proffitt. “We did a good job to get to this point.”

Yellow Jacket pitcher Candace Whittemore (Patrick Henry) earned Most Outstanding Player honors. She struck out 13 batters – tying her season high – against Arcadia and struck out 12 against Mount Aloysius.

Anderson got ahead with a front door breaking ball, then threw another low and away before blowing a fastball by Woolfolk.

Woolfolk homered to straight away center, a moment Ryan said sparked his Cadets.

“I don’t think that we put ourselves in a position to come back if he doesn’t hit that home run, that was a huge at bat,” Ryan said.

Woolfolk said he was sure it

was gone off the bat, and knew his team would keep fighting until the last out. He pitched three scoreless innings of relief after Green exited the game.

“It was an amazing experience. My teammates trust me, my heart goes behind them,” Woolfolk said. “They have my back in everything and that’s what keeps me going.”

Although his Hawks suffered their first loss of the season, Kane said the lessons learned from a hotly contested,

10-inning bout with an elite opponent will be invaluable for his team moving forward.

“We preach all the time not to get too high or too low and that’s why you play a team like Benedictine, to face more adversity,” he said.

“We’ve had some really close games, but there’s nothing that can really simulate a game with Benedictine.”

The two hat tricks were her seventh and eighth of the season. So far this year, she has scored 33 goals and had 16 assists – having a hand in nearly three-quarter of Hanover’s points.

It is a disappointing ending to a season that began with a myriad of weather postponements and cancellations. The Yellow Jackets finish with a 28-10-1 record, and enter the off-season looking to fill key holes, as Roth and Butler, the program’s new all-time leader in hits with 236, lead a group of nine seniors departing.

School district again expects full accreditation For the ninth consecutive year, Hanover County Public Schools will again receive 100 percent full accreditation.

According to Dale S. Theakston, communications specialist, the accreditation is determined based on the 200910 Standards of Learning assessments. Preliminary information from the Virginia Department of Education indicates the accreditation status.

Final accreditation reports are expected on Sept. 15.

and filed an appeal with the 1st District GOP Committee.

“There is no provision in the Party Plan to cancel a convention, and you certainly cannot cancel a convention three days before it is scheduled to convene,” Miller said in his statement.

“Now the convention is completed and Scott Wyatt is or nominee,” Miller continued. “At last night’s meeting, two of the three members of the LDC attempted to overturn the now completed nomination process by issuing a call for a second nomination process in the 97th District. Considering what has transpired over the past two weeks, I think one nomination process is plenty.”

The Committee is scheduled to meet June 17 to finalize those plans and decide an order for names on the ballot. Hanover voters will cast their ballots at the VFW Post 9808 on Flag Lane in Mechanicsville.

On Tuesday, a letter from the majority of members of the 97th District LDC was sent to the Virginia Department of Elections, stating its position

on Saturday’s convention and the submitted results.

“As duly recognized members of the Republican Party of Virginia’s 97th District Committee representing Hanover and King William counties, we request that any certification of the candidate Scott Wyatt by the Department of Elections be deemed invalid,” the statement reads.

The statement claims the LDC took action by a 76% majority vote to cancel the convention and opted to choose a candidate by a canvass scheduled for June 1.

The statement also said those majority members served chairman Thomas Miller with an “Intent to Remove as Chairman Notice” on Sunday. That action requires 30-day notice and the LDC plans to vote on that removal at its June 8 meeting.

Peace responded to the LDC statement by saying, “I appreciate the efforts being put forth by 97th LDC representatives from Hanover and King William counties to ensure that this is a fair and open process.”

He also took issue with Wyatt’s earlier radio claim that he attempted to change

the process once he was assured of defeat at the convention.

“We were fully prepared and committed to win had it remained a convention and we continue to be prepared and committed to win in a party canvass,” Peace said via Facebook.

“It is unfortunate that my opponent has felt that the only path he had to a possible victory was one that had the fewest amount of participants possible,” he added.

“There is no Firehouse Primary,” Wyatt told Jeff Katz on WRVA. “The Legislative District Committee met back in January just like they do around the entire state in every House of Delegates race, and they choose the method of nomination. It commenced several weeks ago and folks were seated as delegates.”

“How many times do I have to beat him?” Wyatt asked. “Do I have to beat him in a convention and then something he wants to choose? We hear in Hanover that he is going to run as a Democrat-endorsed Independent in November.”

She also cited the importance of Democrats entering races that a short time ago seemed like impossible challenges, and noted how a few important elections like hers have changed the face of the Virginia delegation.

“It’s a chance for us to recognize the strength of our democracy,” she said.

Keynote speaker Sen. Mark Warner also stressed the importance of Democrats contesting every race and urged Hanover Democrats to stay engaged and involved.

“There was a time when people thought places in Virginia where we as Democrats just weren’t going to be able to make it,” Warner said. “What we started in 2017 . . . and what continued with Abigail and others in 2018 is so meaningful and important.

It’s more important now than ever.”

Warner referenced the recent special counsel Robert Mueller report and said his party has not completed its investigation of those findings.

“The fact that you can bury your head in the sand and ignore the fact that a foreign nation decided to interfere with our elections . . . is outrageous to me,” Warner said. “No, in America it’s not OK.” Securing our election system is paramount, according to Warner, to maintaining our democracy.

“That means making sure we have an election system that is safe and secure and not able to be penetrated. That means putting some basic rules of the road around social media so people cannot manipulate or change our elections,” Virginia’s senior senator said.

He also said that those cyber intrusions could very well represent the real enemy of the future for the nation.
