Elections: One down (thankfully) and one to go By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
W
hen I arrived in Virginia in May of 2005, I knew there would be a bit of a learning curve involved in learning the laws and governmental processes that would differ from my native West Virginia. For three years, Winchester provided that opportunity to become reacquainted with, in simple terms, how Virginia works. I did have a background after working about seven years in Bluefield, where the newspaper covered a few counties in southwest Virginia.
Having been on staff at The Local since 2008, elections have come and gone with little, if any great fanfare, within Hanover County. Sure, there have been some hotly-contested races, but no hoopla or nasty mudslinging as has been on display heading into yesterday’s Primary Election. Some of the tactics used by candidates for the supervisors’ seats were appalling. Coming from a known politically corrupt county in West Virginia, I thought I’d seen it all in terms of doing whatever it takes to win. Wrong! I’m not going to point fingers at this time, but I hope the guilty parties realize their slimy
maneuvers in pursuit of an elected office. And, of course, there’s the saga of the 97th District House of Delegates seat currently occupied by Chris Peace. He and Scott Wyatt, who has been representing the Cold Harbor District on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, got down and dirty in the fight to represent the district. I reside in the 97th, so I’ll reserve any comment about either candidate. Let’s see what happens on Nov. 5 when Democrat Kevin Washington name appears on the ballot for his party. It’s going to be interesting as the race to the
General Election continues. Before closing, I have to ask (even though we all know the answer), is it really worth losing all dignity and integrity to retain or capture a political position? I hope you kept up with us on Facebook last night for the races for the Hanover County Board of Supervisors and District 12 in the State Senate. As always, thank you to Teri Smithson, director of election and general registrar, and her staff for their help. They are always available to assist. On to November . . .
Sometimes one sentence can define the chapter of life By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist No life should or can be judged by one episode or a single mistake. Not a single one of us would welcome an examination of our weakest moment, or the moment we made what seemed like a life changing blunder. Truth is, life is full of moments and episodes, some good and some bad, but all part of a journey of enlightenment. Hopefully, those unfortunate moments prepare us for bigger challenges that wait down the road of life.
Last week, the sports world mourned the loss of one of its greatest baseball players, Bill Buckner. While many will remember the first baseman for his thousands of base hits or numerous batting titles, others will recall a man whose life was changed by one mistake. Fans are often unforgiving and often display a lack of compassion that only seems acceptable while sitting in bleachers. For some, it’s a license to judge, intimidate and insult participants, all of whom possess far

And Red Sox fans who had been denied a pennant for decades are second to no one when it comes to hurling insults or reminding their favorite player of his last strikeout. It all seemed different in 1986 as the curse seemed destined to end in a World Series that features the hometown favorites against the New
York Mets. With the Red Sox up three games to two, the team needed one out to secure the title -- so when a lazy ground ball dribbled toward Buckner at first, the victory seemed secure. And why not? Buckner was one of the most dependable fielding first basemen in the league and, surely, the last out would be recorded by this hometown hero. In one of those cases of what could go wrong did, the ball slipped under Buckner’s glove and the Mets won

Running at-large leash laws continue
Metro Creative Graphics
HANOVER -- Every year, from April 1 through June 30, it is unlawful for dogs anywhere in Hanover County to be running off their property without being leashed. The county’s “leash law” applies throughout the year in the suburban area. Between April 1 and June 30, it is extended to the rural areas as well because the births of vulnerable livestock, such as baby lambs and calves, tend to
take place during this period. Wildlife activity and rabies cases also generally increase in the April 1-June 30 time frame. Any dogs caught running off their owner’s property will be impounded. Impoundment fees are $25 for the first violation and an additional $10 for each subsequent violation within a 12-month period including a $5 per day boarding fee. Violations also can result in

him, the respect and love of fans who once blamed him for the team’s biggest blunders. Thankfully, Buckner and those closest to him, took the error in stride, but the label of scapegoat was not the one that he wished to be remembered. Going by the numbers, it’s certainly not a title he deserves and major league all star seems a more appropriate title.
In more than 2,500 games, Buckner recorded more than a thousand hits, including 174 homeruns and almost 500 doubles. Boston finally won a title in 2007 and ended the curse and claiming the title of world champs, but some still remember that rolling grounder that eluded Buckner’s glove. Buckner’s passing reminds
all of us that we are better than our worst deed, or more talented than one error would indicate. And, maybe, that’s the most important lesson learned from a man who endured and survived, and, by all accounts, was hesitant to judge his fellow man. Hopefully, history will allow him the same dignity.

Single-vehicle crash on I-295 claims life of Ashland woman Staff Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER COUNTY – A 35-year-old Ashland woman was killed Friday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash at northbound Interstate 295 at the 38 mile marker. National D-Day Memorial observes 75th
Dave Lawrence/The Local
The horror of the landings on Omaha Beach is recalled in this installation at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford. The jet of water at the bow of the landing craft calls to mind the artillery barrage that greeted U.S. soldiers as they approached the beach. The Memorial commemorated the 75th anniversary of the invasion on Thursday, June 6. A simple rose captures the sacrifice of the Bedford Boys in the Allied invasion of Normandy in World War II. More than 20 Bedford residents died in the initial landings at Omaha Beach -- the greatest proportional toll paid by any American community during that invasion.

Longhorned tick detected RICHMOND -- In May of 2018, the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, confirmed the finding of the Haemaphysalis longicornis tick (otherwise known as the East Asian or Longhorned tick) in Virginia. It was previously unknown in the state, but since then has been detected in 24 counties, mostly in the western part of the state. “The tiny tick can appear on cows, horses and other livestock,” said State Veterinarian Dr. Charles Broaddus.

No ‘Oops!’ Hanover girls do it again Hawks win third straight state title By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor BLACKSBURG – The Hanover girls tennis team’s two seniors, Madison Moore and Georgia Temple, began their high school careers on a team that finished runnerup in the VHSL Group 4 state tennis tournament. The next year, behind a dynamic senior, Stephanie Broussard, they won their first state title. They repeated the feat last year without Broussard. Saturday, in a match moved to Virginia Tech’s BurrowsBurleson Tennis Center because of the weather, they finished their high school careers as three-time state champions, defeating Blacksburg 5-1 for the three-peat. Both seniors felt a mixture of happy and sad as the day wound to a close. “It does feel nice, but I’m going to miss this team a lot,” Temple said. “It’s a good feeling, though, getting to win states and knowing I’m so proud of this team. … It’s so hard to explain how amazing it feels.”

The Hanover girls tennis team gathers around their third straight state championship trophy after their 5-1 win over Blacksburg in the VHSL Class 4 tennis championships at Virginia Tech’s Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center Saturday.
Moore was the first Hawk to complete her match, a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Bruins’ Emma Lawless that took less than 35 minutes. She ended an accomplished high school

career – which included three Class 4 doubles titles, one with Broussard and two with current sophomore Raine Weis – with a little bit of unfinished work. “I really wanted to perfect
my forehand for my senior year. But I just ended up slicing every ball,” Moore said. “In the end … it doesn’t matter because it worked either way.” With the team victory, Weis
repeated Broussard’s 2017 trifecta of a singles, doubles and team championship. She took an hour to dispatch her opponent, Blacksburg’s Haley Freeborn 6-2, 6-2.
Because the Burrows Burleson Tennis Center has only six courts, the Class 4 girls began the match with just three courts available – the Class 4 boys team championship, which pitted Hanover against John Handley, took place on the other three courts. After the completion of Temple’s singles match – a 7-5, 6-0 loss to Klaudia Kanska – and Weis’ match, the other three girls singles matches got underway. The three Hawks – junior Alexandra Meyers, sophomore Nina Violi and freshman Kaylee Moore – took care of business. Meyers defeated Raya Freeborn 6-4, 6-4. Violi beat Rachel Guo 6-3, 6-2; and Kaylee Moore knocked off Hannah Deck 6-4, 6-4 to complete the Hawks’ victory. In the boys match, John Handley swept Hanover 5-0. The Judges’ Nick Mueller defeated Hanover’s Ross Violi 6-0, 6-0. Jack Volinsky knocked off Ethan Belote 6-0, 6-0. Mercer Love beat Charles Adams 6-1, 6-1. Daniel Botros knocked off Carson Brooks 6-0, 6-1; and James Gullett overcame Vance Woolard 6-4, 6-0. “It felt good to be here,” said Hanover No. 1 Ross Violi, the team’s only senior. “I think I played pretty well. Raider boys, girls fall again in state lacrosse finals By Rob Witham For the Times-Dispatch HENRICO – With nerves frayed and hearts in throats, players for both Atlee and Briar Woods raced in desperation in the final seconds of Saturday’s Class 5 boys lacrosse championship. The Raiders were seeking one last chance to send a shot to the goal, the Falcons wishing to run out the clock. Raiders senior Andrew Cook fought valiantly one last time to grab possession. When he saw the ball slip away and time run out, he collapsed on the turf at Douglas Freeman High School. Cook, and especially his senior teammates, saw a script they knew all too well become reality again, as Briar Woods held on for a 9-8 victory to capture their third state title in four seasons. Atlee, eliminated

a lot of games that went to deuce. I was up 40-love in a game and 30-love in a couple of games. I made [Mueller] work for points.” Weis and Moore win again SALEM – For Hanover senior Madison Moore, winning just keeps getting better. Moore, who won her first VHSL Group 4 state title three years ago as a doubles partner with then-senior Stephanie Broussard. Friday at Sun Tennis Center, she claimed her third state doubles title – this one her second with doubles partner Raine Weis. “I think each one just gets better and better,” Moore said after their 6-2, 6-0 win over Blackburg’s Haley Freeborn and Emma Lawless. “It just gets bet-
by the Falcons in the state semifinals a year ago, lost in the championship round for the fourth time in five seasons. How close has Atlee been to the ultimate prize? In all four state final appearances, the Raiders have lost by just one goal. Three years ago, when this year’s seniors were freshmen, it was the Falcons defeating the Raiders by the same 9-8 count in overtime. The game itself was not a work of art. Turnovers plagued both teams. Emotions were high. Atlee coach Fielding Crawford observed a match which became a simple test of wills. “When you get two good teams like this together, they’re constantly trying to disrupt everything that we want to do, and that’s what we’re trying to do, too,” Crawford noted. “It comes down to that extra
ground ball, and I felt like we had opportunities to make a little run, and we just couldn’t put it together.” Briar Woods erased a 5-2 Atlee lead in the second period, using two Atlee penalties to score three times in a three and half minute stretch to tie the match at five heading into halftime. The Falcons’ biggest advantage in second half play was on faceoffs, forcing Atlee’s defense, and goalkeeper Jackson Baitinger, to perform at a high level. They rose to the occasion, holding Briar Woods to its lowest goal total of the season. “That’s a very potent offense. They score in many different ways,” Crawford said of the Falcons. “To only give up nine goals to that team, I’m very proud of my defense.” Down the stretch, Briar Woods (22-0) did just enough
ter.” This win was significant for other reasons for Weis, a sophomore. “For me, knowing that this is my last year playing with Madison, I can’t take everything for granted and I need to live in the moment,” Weis said. “So, knowing that she’s leaving me next year kind of changes things.” Hanover’s boys also reached their Class 4 doubles final, but Ross Violi and Ethan Belote fell to John Handley’s Nick Mueller and Jack Volinsky 6-0, 6-1. The two Hawks took on the pair of Judges after a grueling semifinal victory over Jamestown’s Jordan Deberry and Aaron Squire. It took three sets – with a tiebreaker – before Violi and Belote could advance to the final with a 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-4 win.
Weis opens with singles title SALEM – Hanover sophomore Raine Weis had moments of doubt in her VHSL Class 4 singles final against Megan Knight of E.C. Glass Friday afternoon at Roanoke College. She need not have worried. Despite overtaking Knight, then failing to put her away twice with match point on the line, Weis regrouped with a dominant performance in the tiebreaker to claim the state championship with a gutsy 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory. She defeated her semifinal opponent, Warhill’s Stefania Ilardia, with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Weis’ frustration with missed shots showed in the second set as she struggled with her composure. She had to adjust how she approached the match to regain her fierce form. “It definitely was a whole see AGAIN, pg. 24
to keep Atlee (16-2) at bay, answering Cook’s tally with a goal off a turnover 58 seconds later for a 9-7 lead. Cook scored the Raiders’ last goal with 5:39 left. The Falcons opted to stall for a time, but after a shot was saved by Baitinger with 3 minutes left, the final sequence was a physical, albeit sloppy, heavyweight showdown. While bitterly disappointed, Crawford showed unique perspective when evaluating the impact of this Atlee team, and specifically his seniors, on his program. “Not taking away anything from guys a couple of years back, but this group of seniors, the bar that was set high by the guys before them, they really took it to a next level,” Crawford said. “Lacrosse as a sport, since I’ve been at Atlee, has gotten much better all around. A state champion team now is different
than five years ago.” It will be up to the returning Raiders to take that bar and reach even newer heights, as they continue their quest for that elusive state championship. Girls fall to Freedom HENRICO – The stories are strikingly similar, the results equally as painful. After watching FreedomSouth Riding score the gamewinning goal with 2:10 left in last year’s Class 5 girls lacrosse title game, the Atlee Raiders trotted to the sideline for a Freedom timeout, as the Eagles led 11-10 with 2:11 to go. With no shot clock in high school lacrosse, how do you find a way to extract the ball and gain a final opportunity? “In girls lacrosse, it’s pretty easy to stall given the space that you have,” said Atlee head coach Christina Dobson, her voice
hoarse from instructing and urging her team. “We practice against it. I thought we had a couple of spots where we could turn the ball over.” The possession they needed never came as the Eagles retained the Class 5 title, defeating the Raiders 11-10 Saturday afternoon at Douglas Freeman High School. When it mattered the most, Freedom’s freshman goalkeeper Alora Davis made two critical saves to preserve an Eagle lead taken when Allison Ohri scored her fourth goal with 5:37 remaining. All of Ohri’s goals were in the second half, the first two coming in the first 2:09, giving the Eagles their first lead at 6-5. It was part of a 5-0 Freedom run which began just before halftime as Emily Maier, who scored five times a year ago, see LACROSSE, pg. 25

Great Bridge shuts door on Hawks’ season By Nick Vandeloecht Richmond Suburban News MECHANICSVILLE – Landon Higgerson was dealing on the mound and his Great Bridge Wildcats were locking down Hanover’s bats. The hosting Hawks hadn’t sniffed first base since the second inning. That changed in the bottom of the sixth. Two runners got on for Hanover, and Colby Hutnan sent them dashing across home plate on a rocket of a hit that he smashed to the left-center fence in the sixth. An RBI from Jack Mardigian soon made it a three-run ballgame going into the final inning of regulation. But the seven runs that the Wildcats had scored in the third inning were ultimately enough to carry them past the Hawks 7-4 and into the state semifinal round. “That just defines our senior class where there’s no quit,” Hanover coach Tyler Kane said of the way his team rallied on four runs late in the game. “It doesn’t matter the score, it doesn’t matter the outs – they’re going to give us everything they have, and they did that all season.” Hanover grabbed the early lead on an RBI single that Blake

Hanover pitcher Will Bowles was solid in relief for the Hawks in their 7-4 loss to visiting Great Bridge in a Virginia High School League Class 4 quarterfinal on June 4.
Doggett lasered into right field, but the Wildcats, sparked by back-to-back RBI hits from Alex Ziemke and Logan Thompson, exploded past the home team on a seven-run burst in the bottom of the third. Will Bowles took over the mound as Hanover’s fourth pitcher in the contest and faced two over the minimum in the final three frames. “Will’s another senior that just competed and gave everything he got all season,” Kane said. “He came out today and gave us a couple of really strong innings and he gave us a shot to win it. Name of the game’s throwing strikes, and that’s what Will did, and we made plays behind him.” The Hawks were held off base through the middle three frames, but came roaring back in the sixth on the back of Colby Hutnan’s two-run double. Jack Mardigian grounded into a fielder’s choice to plate another run and halve the visitors’ lead to three runs. “We made it interesting in the sixth,” Kane said. “But it wasn’t enough, and that’s how baseball goes sometimes.” Higgerson in the seventh bounced back to toss a threeup, three-down inning for the complete-game victory on the mound. “He’s a really good arm,” Kane said of the Great Bridge pitcher and Radford commit. “He threw multiple pitches for a strike and he just kept us off-balance. ASHLAND – Oh, my gosh! If only the Patrick Henry Patriots could get that nightmarish fourth inning back. If only that top-of-theseventh home run had sunk a few feet before clearing the left-field wall… If only a line shot here, a bloop single there had turned out differently. Then coach Lance LeStourgeon’s crew, rather than Grafton (Yorktown), would be heading to the Class 4 state softball semifinals Friday in Salem. Instead, the visiting Clippers advance, thanks to a 6-4 quarterfinal victory over the Patriots Tuesday in Ashland. “Man, the ball went their way. Right?” said LeStourgeon as twilight descended and a cool, gentle breeze wafted across the field. “Fewest strikeouts we’ve had in a game all year: two. We hit the ball. Hats off to their third baseman [Erin Nicolai]. She played a very good game. First baseman [Caralyne Cox]. Very good game. “The ball just didn’t go our

way. That’s part of the game sometimes.” The Clippers’ fourth began when Nicolai singled to left and moved to second on Alyson Talayumptewa’s bloop single to center. Taylor Lawson’s infield single loaded the bases, and each runner advanced when a pitch grazed Baylee Barnes’ left leg. Cox stroked a single to left scoring Talayumptewa and Lawson. Mya Moore followed with a single to right scoring Barnes. Down 4-0, the Patriots were hardly out. “We had to hold our heads high and move forward,” said sophomore pitcher Riley Dull. “We knew we had to hit ground balls and line drives and get baserunners on.” Which the Patriots did. Consecutive no-out singles to right by Erin White, Dull and Jamie Hughes loaded the bases in the sixth. After a force out at the plate on an infield dribbler thwarted a run, Madelyn Jeuick’s bloop single to center scored courtesy runner Jamie McElroy and Hughes. As the passionate, boisterous, red-clad Patriot faithful sensed a come-from-behind victory, Grafton’s Kate Houle
drilled a home run scoring Nikki Gibson for a 6-2 lead. “Other times when I had two strikes, she pitched me a changeup down the middle, so I knew it was coming,” said Houle, a junior catcher. “I read it coming out of her hand and just sat back.” As before, the Patriots were hardly out. Autumn Slemaker led off the home seventh with a double to left and scored on Saxon Radcliffe’s double to center. Radcliffe advanced on a passed ball, then scored on Erin White’s single to center. The Clippers held fast. The game ended on an infield out. “We have to hit to win,” said Grafton coach Craig Smith. “We were loose. I’m an old guy, a batting practice pitcher. Our assistant coaches did a great job of getting the girls up. I’m so proud of all of them.”

Cavaliers fall to Page in Class 2 quarterfinal By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local CENTRAL GARAGE – A magical ride through the Region 2A baseball tournament by the King William Cavaliers landed them a home game in the Class 2 State Quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon, forcing Region 2B runner-up Page County to make the 121-mile trip for the contest. While game planning for the Panthers, King William knew what their primary assignment would be. “I was hoping we’d get on the other side of T.R. Williams, that’s really what I hoped for. The kid is a player,” said Cavaliers head coach Phil Leid. Williams, a member of USA Baseball’s Under-15 team in 2018 who committed to Virginia Tech while just a sophomore, kept the Panthers in the game until a four-run seventh broke it open. King William’s season closed with an 8-3 defeat. The lefthander scattered eight hits over six innings, striking out nine for the Panthers. But the Cavaliers gave the defending Class 2 state champions all they could handle and more. Kolby Anderson began the game with a single, coming home when Kolbe Jorgenson

tallied her only two goals, the second as time expired to cut Atlee’s lead to 5-4. The Raiders (15-4) enjoyed a strong start and, eventually, answered Freedom’s rise as Kate Miller scored with 21:25 left, while Ashley Karn tallied unassisted just 1:40 later to tie the match at 7-7. The remainder of the contest was a back and forth test

doubled to the left field corner for an early 1-0 Cavalier advantage. The Panthers answered in the second with a pair of singles, and a run on a squeeze play as Isaiah Cloude laid down a bunt that allowed Noah Hammer to score the first of his two runs for a 1-1 tie. Williams then began to make his presence known, striking out two Cavaliers to leave a runner stranded in the second, then launched a two-run homer over the right field fence to give the Panthers their first lead at
3-1. Back on the mound in the third with two aboard, Williams struck out Jorgenson, then induced Landon Smith into a 1-6-3 double play to end the threat. The Panthers added one in the fourth on an RBI single from Freddy Stidham to plate Cloude, ending the day for King William starter Orion Debres, who lasted 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while fanning three. Reliever Travis Shumate struck out Taran Baker
to end the inning. Shumate worked around a walk in both the fifth and sixth innings, giving the Cavaliers a chance to mount a comeback. In the fifth, Jayveon Robinson singled, then Anderson got on base when hit by a Williams pitch. Skyler Stone’s sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, and, two batters later, Smith brought Robinson home on an infield hit, a feat replicated by Shumate to plate Anderson. It was 4-3 and King William had hope.
“I would say we probably hit (Williams) the hardest this year,” Leid noted. “We did get a lot of hits off of him, we put the ball in play, and they made the plays.” Williams retired the Cavaliers in order in the sixth, then went to work in the top of the seventh. When it was done, the Panthers had turned two doubles, two singles and a hit by pitch into four runs, and an 8-3 lead to give to Williams when he took the mound for the Cavaliers’ last chance.
of wills, the Eagles scoring to retake the lead twice, Atlee grabbing their final advantage with two goals in seven seconds, both assisted by Ariana Lanzo. At 10:21 left, it was 10-9. Davis slammed the door on Atlee down the stretch, highlighted by a pair of point-blank saves, one on Miller, to give Freedom (18-4) the opportunity to run out the clock. “Once place that killed us was shot placement,” Miller explained. “I don’t think we finished our shots the way we
should have.” Miller, Karn, and senior Reaghan Kolb each scored three goals for Atlee. “There was a fight there that we didn’t have last year, so this one stings a little bit harder,” Dobson said of her team’s performance. “They fought to the very end, and there were opportunities, but give credit to (Davis). She was the absolute difference maker at the end.” Miller and her returning teammates again begin an offseason trying to both heal the
wounds of being so close to claiming the first state championship for any Richmond-area high school in the 13-year history of VHSL lacrosse, while learning from the defeat. “Honestly? I don’t think we left it all on the field,” Miller opined. “I think that’s the worst part. We didn’t play exactly our way, and I think next year that’s going to be our motivation. We’ve lost twice by one goal to the same team. We’re going to make sure that never happens again.”

cascade of runs that ultimately ended Hanover’s season. Tied at 1-1, Great Bridge’s Kelsey Donahue doubled and advanced to third on an error, then scored on a wild pitch to put the Wildcats up 3-1. Later that inning, Kayla Liske was hit by a pitch and was subbed by pinch runner Sasha Miller, who subsequently scored on an error to make it 3-1.
The game, and the season, ending in jarring fashion as, after Anderson was hit by a pitch and Stone singled, Jorgenson launched a line drive to center field which, to many, looked like it would fall in for another hit. But Stidham made a running catch, fired to shortstop covering second, the ball then relayed to first to complete the triple play. King William began 2019 at 1-5. A team with only five seniors had opportunities to mentally pack it in and play out the string. The Cavaliers would not hear of it. Winning eight of their last 11 regular season contests, they rolled off four straight victories as the sixth seed to capture the regional crown, and, with it, created serious momentum for 2020. “Our first two batters (Anderson, Stone) are juniors, the nine hitter (Robinson) is a freshman, seeing the ball great,” Leid explained. “I’m super excited for the future, and they carry themselves the right way. They listen. That’s why I love these kids, because it’s rare nowadays for them to actually listen, and you can see it.” Leid, and the Cavaliers, hope that vision will result in even bigger and better things come next spring.
Hanover’s lone run came in the first. Jessica Russell walked, stole second, then advanced to third and scored on a pair of Wildcat errors. Great Bridge wasted no time responding. Lauren Van Assche doubled, stole third and scored on a Donahue single to make it 1-1. Hanover pitcher Ellen Palya went the distance in the loss, striking out 11 Wildcats. Northam calls special sesssion on gun violence
Visiting northernmost town
Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND — Gov. Ralph Northam recently signed a proclamation summoning the members of the Virginia General Assembly back to Richmond on Tuesday, July 9, for a special session to address the emergency of gun violence in the Commonwealth. Northam announced that he would call legislators back and ask for “votes and laws, not thoughts and prayers” on commonsense gun safety proposals such as: Universal background checks; A ban on assault weapons, to include suppressors and bump stocks; An extreme risk protective order; Reinstating the one-gun-a-month law; Child access prevention; Requiring people to report lost and stolen firearms; and Expanding local authority to regulate firearms, including in government buildings. The governor is requesting that members of

the General Assembly engage in an open and transparent debate, in which the bills brought before the legislature are put to a vote by the entire General Assembly.
Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Hodnett
The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Marcus, 549130, is a 1-year-old (estimated) neutered male Mastiff. He has had his first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Marcus is a sweet, handsome boy. He is always acting friendly. Marcus has lots of playful energy. He loves to run and play. Marcus gets along well with people and most dogs. He will be a great companion for an active person. Merlin, 549607, is a 5-year-old (estimated) neutered male domestic short-haired feline. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Merlin is a super sweet cat that wants nothing more than to be beside you and purr. He loves people. Merlin is fairly active but also loves to sit and observe. He likes to look out windows. Merlin is well litter-trained and keeps his cage nice and neat. He will make a great house cat. For more information on these great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. You also can visit the website to see other animals available for adoption at http://hanovercounty.gov/Animals/Adopt-a-Pet/.
Charles Verdery of Mechanicsville is shown on May 29 in Barrow, Alaska, holding a copy of The Mechanicsville Local. The temperature was 33F with a 20 to 25 MPH wind, which made holding the paper difficult. Barrow is the northernmost land and town in North America. Locally the town is known as Utqiagvik and the post office still recognizes Barrow. Verdery said the photo was taken about 12:30 a.m. during the time the sun never sets. The boats shown are those used by the indigenous people to hunt whales. The flags shown represent families as a sort of “coat of arms.” They are only flown after a successful hunt.

tornadoes,” said Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian J. Moran. “Storms also have the ability to disrupt communication networks and produce prolonged power outages. Power interruptions, extreme heat, transportation networks, and communication system disruption can compound the effects of a hurricane for weeks. It is critical to have a plan and make preparations now to address your family’s unique needs and circumstances.”
HOW TO PREPARE If you live in coastal Virginia, learn your hurricane evacuation zone, review evacuation routes and the Commonwealth’s Hurricane Evacuation Guide at KnowYourZoneVA.org. Coastal Virginians can also call 2-1-1 to learn their evacuation zone if they do not have access to a computer or internet services. Residents not residing in a pre-identified evacuation zone should listen to evacuation orders from local and state emergency agencies to determine if and when to evacuate. All Virginians, regardless of where you live or work, should review the Hurricane Preparedness Guide at VAemergency.gov/hurricanes.
Hurricanes can produce significant statewide flooding, and just one inch of water in a home or business can cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repairs. Most property insurance policies do not cover flood losses, including those damages that result from flash floods, dam breaks, storm surges, inland flooding, and river flooding. Don’t wait until you see the next storm coming to purchase a flood insurance polic— these policies have a 30-day waiting period before taking effect. Contact your insurance agent or the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) call center at 888-379-9531 for an agent referral or visit floodsmart.gov. To learn to how to prepare for and recover from a flood, visit VAemergency.gov/floods. It can take several days or weeks for government services and assistance to reach you and your family depending on the severity of the disaster and your geographic location. Purchasing emergency supplies and building an emergency kit to sustain your family during and after a hurricane is critical. Visit VAemergency.gov/emergency-kit to review the checklist of supplies for your family and pets and to build a family emergency communication plan. Stay informed as a storm approaches by following local media outlets, your National Weather Service field office, and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) on Facebook and Twitter.

Ashland Strawberry Pageant tradition continues By Lorie Foley Ashland Strawberry Faire
A
SHLAND– The Ashland Strawberry Faire is celebrating its 38th year this summer. One of the most beloved traditions is the Miss Strawberry and Mister Strawberry Youth
Pageant. The Strawberry Faire Youth Pageant is a free, noncompetitive pageant. Winners are selected as their names are drawn from a strawberry basket. Kids as young as 3-years-old can sign up to participate, and are grouped by age categories. For the third year in a row, the pageant organizers will select one special child as the “Spirit of the Faire.” The first winner in 2017 was Penelope Rose, and last year’s winner was Matilda Womble. Matilda will be on hand this year to
crown the new “Spirit of the Faire.” The Pageant takes place on the “Fountain Stage,” which is sponsored this year by the Town of Ashland. The Fountain Stage is across the street from Blackwell auditorium. Shelly Perkins is the MC for the Pageant, which will take place promptly at 11:45am on Faire day. 2018 “Miss Hanover Abilities,” Emma Wooten will be present for the Pageant festivities this year. Tompkins Jewelers is this year’s Strawberry Pageant sponsor. Owner Sheila Tompkins is donating tiaras to the winners in each category. “Tompkins Jewelers is very proud to be sponsor once again of this year’s Strawberry Pageant, and we have beautiful tiaras which the winners get to keep!” Tompkins said. The Ashland Strawberry Faire committee hopes to see you on June 15 – rain or shine! The Ashland Strawberry Faire is a 501c3 organization.
