VFW Post 10657 in Glen Allen is seeking permission from the Hanover County Board of Supervisors to continue holding semi-annual events that are being called dangerous by neighbors on Cedar Lane.

HANOVER — The Hanover County Board of Supervisors will decide whether a local VFW Post can continue to hold semi-annual events that some neighbors say are dangerous. Members of Post 10657 of Glen Allen are seeking a Conditional Use Permit allow-

ing them to construct a building to house a collection of antique military vehicles and equipment at their Cedar Lane location. There was little objection to the new building, but the activities associated with the site were scrutinized when Planning Commissioners considered the request last month. see WEAPONS, pg. 4

Tuesday, Aug. 13. There is no charge to attend the dinner and children are invited. You will learn how the program works and meet the group leaders. They know that it’s hard to take this first step towards healing but just know that the leaders also have been there. They want to show you that you can get through this and have hope for the future. They’ll also be running the DC4K group, which provides children with a safe and neutral place to gain an age-appropriate understanding of separation and divorce and learn how to process and share their feelings. For 13 weeks, children become involved in a fun, caring group with weekly session

topics that help them learn that God’s love strengthens them and helps them turn their sadness to hope and their anger to joy. There are games, crafts, role playing, discussion times, journaling, and activity books to help children process what they are experiencing and

move forward in their lives. DC4K is designed for kids 5 to12 years of age. For more information on these programs, to RSVP for the kickoff dinner, or to register for the DivorceCare or DC4K program, call the church office at 804-730-3676. Child care is available for children 4 and under.

Love is at the heart of reversing roles

Citizens should get educated on federal debt

By Melody Kinser Managing Editor

S

he seemed to be resting comfortably, but it was a very unfamiliar -- and worrisome -- role: Mom was ill and spending her fifth night in the local hospital. She has been healthy for most of her almost 89 years -- and that includes beating thyroid cancer in 1978. She is a dynamo who, since joining me here in 2009, has handled grocery shopping, going to her weekly hair appointment, and taking advantage of the retail opportunities in the vicinity of our home. Those who meet her are always surprised and complimentary about her age. She always attributes being active to keeping her stamina and vibrant, youthful appearance. I only left her side twice to come home to get

clothes and toiletry items. And we are blessed to have a neighbor who helps whenever possible. Despite the thyroidectomy, this was probably the sickest and weakest I had ever seen my mother. Throughout the ordeal, I talked often to God and my father. Dad loved Mom so very much, and was truly devoted to her. She and I spent the last week of Dad’s life with him in a hospital room in our hometown. This was eerily similar in some ways, but, if there’s anything I know about Mom, it’s that she is a fighter. She doesn’t give up easily and she didn’t this time either. She was determined to return home -- and did just that last Tuesday. We haven’t reached that point in our lives where it’s a matter of me being her primary caregiver, but, should that day come, I will attempt to provide the same love and care she continues to

give to her grown daughter. Our parents raise us and, as Dad always said, prepare us to follow our own paths in life. When Dad passed away, my sister, brotherin-law and I followed his example in our love for Mom. Our goal was to take care of Mom the way Dad had. I sometimes feel as if he’s smiling about his youngest (me, the responsible, self-absorbed one) finally growing up. Mom and I have made some wonderful memories since deciding to make our home here. The image of her sleeping peacefully provided such a sense of love, and a reminder of what a blessing I have that my mother is still with me at nearly nine decades. Thank you to all who said a prayer or get well wishes to Mom. We appreciate the kindness of a community that has proven it is home.

50 years ago: By the time we got to Woodstock . . . By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It’s difficult to believe it’s been 50 years since nearly a half million people gathered for three days of peace, love and music in a small village in upstate New York. What we now call Woodstock was first billed as An Aquarian Exposition: Three days of Peace and Music, and

was truly the concert that almost didn’t happen. The event was organized by four promoters who faced enormous challenges planning on a concert they thought would make millions. When it was over, they were close to bankruptcy. At first glance, it all seemed possible and more than 160,000 tickets were sold in advance at $18 a pop. Officials

expected no more than 200,000 to show up for the event. Town officials were promised that no more than 50,000 people would attend. Organizers finally rented land from a local dairy farmer, Max Yasgur, for $10,000, and what at first appeared to be a second rate lineup of bands began to expand. Organizers credit the booking of

Creedence Clearwater Revival as the turning point in the planning process. Once the popular rockers were booked, other bands signed on and the event that changed rock ’n’ roll history was becoming a reality. Kids began showing up on Wednesday before the concert, and any thoughts of a well-planned event see WOODSTOCK, pg. 8

I write about today's "Republicans" and the insane spending by the Trump Administration. Oddly, the only person mentioning this publicly is the disgraced former governor of South Carolina who was recently on ABC's “The View”. He noted that Trump keeps up this endless “news cycle” of stupid things he said, and people's reactions to it. This way, important, adult matters are dropped by the ratings-craving media. Few remember the Concord Coalition -- a bi-partisan group of congressmen and others who made the federal debt their main issue. They wanted the public to be made aware of it, and the financial waste it creates, robbing us of national prosperity. Look it up. I was a member. Republican administrations had run up the federal debt to a sky-high level in the 1980s. Under President Bill Clinton, the entire federal debt was paid off, but not by anything Clinton did. It was actually the surprise revenue from the new dotcom phenomenon. With the debt gone, the Concord Coalition was happily disbanded. Then, after the Bush Crash in 2008 (again, a Democrat administration had to come in and clean up the Republican mess), the debt reappeared. Under Trump, this debt had grown far worse than anyone thought possible. But shhhh! Let's talk about some stupid Thing trump said! Most Americans are in debt. A few can handle credit, but most cannot and, interest rates keep them poor. They either don't understand math or are too undisciplined to heed a bank balance. Most are ignorant of what the federal debt is or its significance. They often hear about the budget see LETTERS, pg. 8

exited with the influx. Organizers made strategic decisions those final days that would shape the scope of what had become a happening. Trying to juggle dwindling funds for planning, they opted to build the stage versus erecting a fence around the event. Those with and without tickets poured onto the farm, and organizers quickly declared it was a free concert . . . And the rest is history. The last performer to take the stage was Jimi Hendrix. With the mixture of rain delays and bad organization, it was 8:30 a.m. on Monday when the Voodoo Child belted out his iconic version of the Star Spangled Banner. And those who tell you of the untold number of rapes and deaths that occurred during the festival just don’t have the facts. There were two deaths recorded, two births and a number of minor injuries.

And, that’s what we as a generation took away from a festival that grew in popularity once the movie “Woodstock” so beautifully captured the spirit of the festival. Many of us felt like the event confirmed that social harmony was possible and people could gather in an idealistic effort to promote peace and unity. That brings us to an event scheduled this year to promote the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. It seems this event also is enduring its share of pre-planning nightmares with several locations in New York opting out of the process, and rapper Jay-Z recently announcing he won’t be performing at the event. Organizers say they have now acquired a site in Maryland for the event, but, with less than two months remaining, it seems more likely that Woodstock II is more of a dream than a reality. And, that’s OK with me. Let’s face it, most remakes are grossly inferior to the original, and capturing that spirit, confusion and unpredictabil-

ity that made Woodstock a momentous occasion is impossible. Maybe we should just remember this piece of Americana just the way it was: complete with mud, overflowing toilets and other inconveniences. In 1971, I visited the small town near Yasgur’s farm on a trip to Canada. It was quiet and peaceful, and reminded me of a Saturday Evening Post cover, almost storybook in its idyllic setting. I stopped for gas at a small service station and noticed a man across the street mowing his lawn. As I exited, I stopped my car and waved at the man as he finished up his lawn. “Were you here for Woodstock?” I asked him. “I sure was,” he yelled back. “A kid went to the bathroom (my words, his were more specific) right in my front yard.” I pulled away slowly. I suppose the memories are not as pleasant for some of those who endured the three days of peace and love – and nowhere to go to the bathroom.

fortifications have been erected in or near the wetlands area that must be restored to its original condition. Post representative Scott Courtney of Resource International said restoring those wetlands might only require the removal of logs that outline the trail and allowing the area to reforest. A community meeting was held last November where neighbors cited concerns regarding the use of Cedar Lane for vintage military vehicles and the firing of military weapons that disturb neighboring livestock and other animals. Garman said the application would require a survey of the property conducted by a certified engineer to delineate the location of the wetlands submitted before a site plan could be approved. Planners also recommended that the firing of military

Courtney asked that those activities be permitted on Memorial Day and Veterans Day when the Post invites families to celebrate the holidays at the location. “This is one of the educational activities that the VFW does,” Courtney said. “The

his votes (he lost mine with his flip-flop), has decided that the KKK does not have the same privilege to peacefully gather as other groups, such as the NAACP, which is a hate group for all conservatives. Derrick Johnson, current NAACP president, calls President Trump racist and he calls the Tea Party racist (although there is a racial mix of members). Past President Julian Bond stated Republicans are the “White People’s Party” (even though the KKK raged against Republicans and were all Democrat) and he called us “a crazy swarm of right-wing locusts.” The NAACP (its name itself is racist) is aligned with the anti-Christian ACLU and Planned Parenthood, and I’m baffled how local pastors inserted themselves and their church members with the group just as I would be if they did the same with the KKK. I decided to read the articles on the KKK website -- clearly they are a white only group, although I don’t think there are any white people in the Black Riders, Muslim Brotherhood or any of the other 200 known Black only groups, so that is not surprising. And like the black groups, the KKK is racist in the real definition. Some articles were about history and heritage but one article pointed to the interesting trend today to inspire white guilt and that the Democrats running for president are on that bandwagon. I don’t agree with the KKK, but I don’t agree with the NAACP either. The Constitution allows for the coexistence of both. Interestingly, one article on the KKK website talks about the “Tiny Town Tyrants” that rant, rave, call police, and otherwise try to negate their gatherings and literature distribu-

tion and the KKK won their case with the Department of Justice. Our Tiny Town Tyrants have been following the same pattern as has happened in other states. It has just made me more curious, more investigative, and intent on educating myself on what these groups are up to and how they are influencing us with their propaganda. Patricia Lassiter Mechanicsville

Name changes for schools is protest issue It is clear that those persons protesting the recent appearance of the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) at the Hanover Courthouse are the ones who are not only pleased but perhaps overjoyed at that KKK non-event. I say non-event because the entire membership of the KKK would likely fit into a small room. The average Hanoverian wouldn’t have even known they were there if they had simply been ignored. One would have thought that these protesters would have lain low following their failure, by a vote of 84% of Hanoverians, to change the names of our Hanover County Public Schools, Lee-Davis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School. That certainly is their real goal, at least for starters. But, showing their detestation for democracy, they quickly regrouped and decided to force the issue. Using the golden opportunity of the KKK non-event, they targeted and attempted to shame the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. Yes, cut off the head and the body will die. Good strategy if we as Hanoverians let it work. My paternal great-grandfather, Charles Reardon, was a member of Company A, 71st Pennsylvania Volunteer

Regiment. You can find his name on the 10-foot monument to the 71st on the Gettysburg Battlefield. He fought on the Union side in every major battle of the Civil War, from the Seven Days to Fredericksburg to Antietam to Gettysburg to Cold Harbor and everything in-between. At Gettysburg, his Regiment was stationed at “Bloody Angle,” where the fiercest fighting took place. And he did not fight to free slaves That is because the war was not fought over slavery. Who do you think bought that Southern cotton for their Northern textile mills, and who bought that sugar cane for their Northern Distilleries? New England mills alone consumed over 283 million pounds of slave-produced cotton, or 67% of the 422 million pounds of cotton used in U.S. mills in 1860. And we might mention those quarter million slaves on the Union side that Lincoln did not free with his Emancipation Proclamation. Yes, change those Hanover County Public Schools names, and the next target will be the Monument to Hanover County Confederate soldiers at the Hanover Courthouse. And I proudly mention that among those many brave Confederate soldiers listed is that of my maternal great-grandfather, George Burnett, the only Confederate soldier from Old Cold Harbor. Michael “Mickey” Reardon Mechanicsville

We have heard enough of the pretend talk We live in a fallen world. We need representatives that are willing to work for solutions: U.S. Sen. Mark Warner and Gov. Ralph Northam just want to talk about it then decide to push the so-called

talks back until November. Shame on you. We need committees throughout Hanover County held accountable and they have the obligation to provide solutions and not just talk. So many just to step down – they see only what they choose to see and are not willing to see the real problems. I grew up where we always respect our elders, not the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. They choose to lecture a senior citizen on what they should have done; the conversation was recorded how many times was it said. You shoulda, you shoulda – then the solution that the resident should move. Is that the reposition you want? Talks on gun control possibly new laws – that’s a dead end. There’s no one to enforce laws already in place. Some gun problems we’re having never should have been on the streets in the hands of the general public. Proposed universal background checks – is not a solution, only another waste of taxpayers’ money. The general public doesn’t understand that background checks are not foolproof. A crime can be committed today here or another state. That person might not be charged until a month or more later depending on the state, geographic jurisdiction, or court system. Those are just a few of the factors that could allow a gun to be purchased today. This rule could only apply to honest gun collectors. I’ve stated over a decade that the face of crime has changed: they’re younger and different methods. Law enforcement still uses outdated guidelines. I once lived in Atlanta, Georgia, during that time known as the murder capital; yet I have seen and experienced more unlawful issues here in Hanover County in the past 10 years than I did in my three years there. I know it wants to work –

the guns are already out there; let’s take a different approach. “Guns don’t kill,” but the ammunition you put in them does. I was 9 years old when I fired my first gun, a Colt .22 pearl-handled similar to what Gen. George Patton carried. I get, however, even a responsible gun owner doesn’t need and never should have had access to magazines that would hold 10, 20 or more rounds, so stop the useless talk and do an immediate recall today as it is a safety risk to all “humans.” Ammo and magazines that hold over 10 rounds, as well as military equipment, need to stay. They’re not for resale to the general public. At this point, hold the manufacturer accountable; we don’t need detachable double-stack shotgun mags and our private

gun shops as well. I had my uncle lose a wife – a normal summer day doing laundry, back door open, enjoying the day just off Woodman Road. Her exhusband would park at the end of the block, walk in the back yard of the neighbors, and stand in the backyard, would fire shots through that screen door. She would lay all alone until later that evening. It would take days before that person would be found and charged. Step up! Stop the violence that starts here. You’re allowing innocent people and our children to be in the line of fire. Blanche Roberts Hanover see LETTERS, pg. 17

Soccer team admonished for actions I want to congratulate the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team on its championship, but that is where it ends. The actions of several team members since the win have been vile and disgusting. The example they are setting for their fans is reprehensible. They will do much more for their “cause” by acting like adults rather than spoiled rotten babies. Unless there is a big change, women’s soccer goes in the same bin as NFL football. Good riddance! Oh, and how about being able to beat a junior high boys’ soccer team before you start talking pay equality. John Crockett Mechanicsville

Writer seeks to educate KKK supporters In regards to the many letters written to the editor published in the July 31 Mechanicsville Local, I would absolutely love to further educate those who see themselves as Klan enablers, supporters, members, or whoever. First, to the “gentleman” Lee Turner: I wonder if you know that the first chapter of the NAACP was formed in 1909 as a biracial endeavor to advance justice for “folks of color” by a group of people far more intelligent than you or I to end the numerous lynchings that occurred with such evil regularity that white folks had picnics during such. I wonder if Mr. Turner also knows that there had been dozens and dozens of other NAACP chapters founded

throughout “the South” for much the same reason(s) ... to enable group-protection from vile and evil participation of frightened whites in felonies against many black folks; some for just being successful. You can go to the “Lynching Museum” just outside Montgomery, Alabama, to learn all about the people (names included) who were lynched all over “the South” because white people(s) saw these innocent folks as dangerous threats who “are taking our land and our women” (quote from the little mislad [brainwashed] white boy) who murdered nine folks at Mother Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, a mere four years ago this past June 17 -- the same butcherous and foul opinions that have darkened this society for 400 years (happy anniversary). Point is that for you to compare the NAACP to the cowardly Klan shows exactly where your (and all those like you, y’alls) “hearts” really is. To think that one group that was founded by a sore loser general (Forrest), which relied on “terrorism” at night (under the cover of darkness) to “show them #%*?!@& folks freedom” to another group that stands for simply enjoying what the Constitution guarantees to all ... makes my blood boil! I know a “certain someone” who also was a stupid and ignorant kid who got their “battleflag-tats” almost 40 years ago because of the thought that all this (Klan, flag, pride) was for “heritage.” It never was. It never should be. It never will be. It never amounted to a tinker’s damn. It’d be just like any German being proud to display the Swastika. Evidence of this can be seen in any video(s) of the despicable White Right March that fouled the air around Charlottesville two years ago this August (happy anniversary again). This “certain someone” has elected to leave these (two)

racist-tats on to educate narrow-minded people such as yourself since the advent of the dark and evil underworld power that’s stolen the White House has given all these Klan folks the courage they need to come out of the cracks in the walls. To Dan Corso: Thank you, sir, for educating folks as to the blame we all need to face. The dark past that began as a simple and greedy method for Southern planters to become wealthy (even in today’s standards) with “free labor” grew into the hatred of brown folks by white folks, which, still today, is seen within the clowns parading around in their costumes with the white bonnets, where some are still hidden behind their masks (a Class 4 Felony in Virginia I believe). By the way, two requirements to join the Klan: You’ve got to be white (almost getting impossible anthropologically) and you’ve got to be a “Christian.” I wonder: Don’t these Klan folks know that Jesus Christ is, was and always will be ... brown. That’s correct. Geography doesn’t lie. His Mother Mary was from Southern/Central Judea. Two thousand years ago, there weren’t the transplanted white folks that there are today in (Israel). I’ll stop now (my wife’s reminding me to shut up). Last thought: This country (along with the help of the most dangerous human to ever occupy the executive branch) is methodically moving to the same breaking point of the late 1850s. If there is another civil war (which I’m sure the Klan would simply lust for), there will not be a “Restoration.” There will not be a “white separatist utopia” set aside in Idaho (or wherever). Russia, China, North Korea and ISIS will all come in and carve it up and the precious lit-

Richard G. Johnstone Jr., president and CEO of the VMD Association, said Frazier is known for “always bringing his insightful questions, business acumen and common sense to bear on every issue, and always serving as a champion for ‘the member at the end of the line.’ ” Accompanied by his daughter Gail, Frazier said he was taken aback when the award was announced. He noted he has served on many boards, “but none of them have ever been as exciting or as interesting as being on the electric co-op board. … I’ve just been very proud to be a part of it.” Frazier’s relatives and colleagues were in attendance as he accepted the award.

“Bill was always prepared when he came into the board meetings. It was obvious that he’d done his homework,” said Kent Farmer, president and CEO of Rappahannock Electric Cooperative. “He is a selfless community advocate and dedicated to promoting the cooperative business model.” For more information, visit www.vmdaec.com or www.coopliving.com. Signs are to be given to the superintendent to be displayed after judging to ensure a “blind” judging process. 4. No creation can be taller than 8 feet when completed. 5. All items attached to the bale to complete the work of art have to be securely

The size of the finished structure can be no larger than 12’ long by 12’ wide by 8’ high. 7. All items used in the design should be picked up on Monday, Oct. 7. Any items left after this date will be considered abandoned by the fair staff. Judging of the bales will

She has been spayed and has had her first set of vaccines. She also is FELV/FIV test negative. Chloe has been the shelter for over a month. She was surrendered by her owner. trails are no longer being used by the Post. Courtney also requested that the second entrance be allowed to remain open during construction of the new building. He asked the commission to revise the planning staff ’s recommendations and allow the demonstrations and firing of weapons on two specific days during the year, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Courtney said neighbors would be notified to allow

ample time to remove or prepare animals for the firings. “We are opposed to this because of the impact that it has on the livestock,” said neighbor Mike Adams. “It’s hard to move them for just a day with these events. With five hours of gunfire, the animals just can’t take it. The VFW said they had a right to do it and they were going to continue to do it.” Adams said during those live fire demonstrations combatants fired blanks at each other “at point blank range with kids standing up in the Jeeps.”

He said the Post also allowed young children to fire M-16 weapons without hearing or eye protection. “Basic gun safety rules were not adhered to,” Adams said. Adams, whose father founded the Post, said the organization has been “taken over” by members of a vintage military vehicle association. Warren Newsome said he attends those special celebrations and supports the continuation of the events including the live fire and vehicle rides. He said allowing children to ride in the vintage vehicles provides special insight into Army life. “All the vehicles we parade are legal,” Newsome said. He also said the blanks

used pose no danger due to the minimal amount of gunpowder used to make them. “A firecracker is louder than these blanks,” he said. Courtney told commissioners that certified surveys had been completed and submitted as requested and the trails are no longer being used by the Post. Richard Crane, quatermaster of the Post, also spoke in favor of allowing the event to continue and said the event teaches safe practices. “We emphasize safe firearms handling. … Under the instruction of veterans,” Crane said. “The most important part of our event is seeing people talking to the veterans. We only want to do this twice a

year.” Fay Strong is a member of Post Auxiliary and her father co-founded the current unit, but she expressed concerns regarding the live fire demonstrations. “I’m not opposed to the building,” she said. “I’m opposed to what I just stood here and heard them say the firing of the guns was safe. I’m opposed to the shooting, which has been a problem for quite a long time.” Commissioner Larry Leadbetter represents the district where the Post is located and said he had walked the property, including the trails and the foxholes. “It’s torn up pretty bad with a lot of ruts,” he said, describ-

ing the wetlands area where the trails are located. “Based on what I saw and what the neighbors have indicated… I think this activity is very disruptive to this neighborhood.” Leadbetter said he favored recommending approval of the application, including the restrictions outlined by planning staff that included the prohibition of live fire, the restoration of the wetlands, and the closing of the second entrance leading to the Jeep trails. His fellow commissioners agreed and approved the recommendation by a unanimous vote. The board of supervisors will now consider the application at an upcoming meeting.

LETTERS Continued from pg. 17

tle dream of a nation of immigrants who wanted freedom and self-governing will die on the ash heap of history (with Nazi Germany). Dr. Richard Ryder Mechanicsville

Fake news: Truths that are not for public The letters to The Mechanicsville Local editor these days are all about local politics but has anyone

noticed that the President’s name comes up daily due to fake news trying to associate him with criminals, criminal activity, lying, bad decisions and tweets. All this is unfairly orchestrated by the Washington post, NYT, CNN, MSNBC and Democrats to name a few. My definition of fake news would be: “Truths that fake politicians don’t want you to know about”. A simple solution to stop this harassment of the President would be to somehow buy up these fake news papers and TV stations and close them down. Not only would the Democrats and

other sore losers not have an outlet any longer but having only one opinion on all matters pertaining to the American people would solve a lot of arguments. The Media should stick with news of importance such as animal rescues and acts of Mother Nature. I’m pretty close to agreeing with the die-hard supporters of a party that the U.S. Constitution was for existing conditions in 1787 and does not apply to present day politics. Our present and future presidents, either Democrat or Republican, should have full control of not only the

Executive Branch but full control of the Legislative and Judicial branches without interference from the media or an opposing party. This type of system has proven to work well for some Third World countries such as Venezuela, Russia and North Korea whom we could use as role models. If anyone wants to organize a fundraiser to buy up these fake news outlets and stop the harassment, count me in. I can throw in my profit from the sale of my PEZ dispenser to get things rolling. tle dream of a nation of immigrants who wanted freedom and self-governing will die on the ash heap of history (with Nazi Germany).

Atlee Little League falls to S.C. in tourney By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local GREENVILLE, N.C. – Atlee Little League’s 9-11 All-Stars may not have walked away with the championship banner, but there is no doubt the kids left it all on a baseball diamond in North Carolina. “We played 17 games over 61 days and only lost three,” said James Layne, head coach of the team. “You can’t ask for much more.” Their journey began on a practice field in Mechanicsville, and ended at Stallings Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina, Wednesday afternoon, as they finished runners-up in the 2019 Tournament of State Champions. The champions from South Carolina avenged an Atlee comeback win in pool play with an 11-3 victory for the title. South Carolina, which brought the bulk of a team who placed second at the 8-10 Tournament of State Champions in 2018, rode the pitching of Tyson Fine, who threw a complete game in the championship, never throwing more than 15 pitches in an inning during a 74-pitch performance that included four strikeouts. After two scoreless innings, South Carolina struck first with a pair in the top of the third. Atlee answered as Bryce Stallard

Rob Witham for The Local

Atlee Little League finished as runner up in the 9-11 Tournament of State Champions at Elm Street Park in Greenville, North Carolina, Wednesday. Atlee, the Virginia state champions, fell to South Carolina 11-3 in the championship game.

sent a high pitch to the base of the left field wall for a double. After Grayson Reece reached base on an error at shortstop to advance Stallard to third base, Stallard scored on a sacrifice fly to shallow right field by Barrett Bucholz to cut the lead to 2-1. The fourth inning would belong to South Carolina. It

struck for five runs to extend the lead to 7-1. Brady Elrod took the first pitch of the Atlee half of the fourth over the center field fence for a solo home run. But after an Evan Salapka single, South Carolina turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the Atlee threat. The deficit wasn’t new to

Atlee when it came to South Carolina. After taking easy victories in pool play of 12-2 over Tennessee and 11-0 against Florida over the weekend to clinch a berth in the semifinals, Atlee went to the sixth and final inning against South Carolina in their last game of pool play Monday down 6-2.

But after bringing two runs in, down to its final out, Elrod stroked a single to left to bring home two more to tie the game at 6-6, then Chase Mottley hugged the left field line with a single to bring home two more runs. South Carolina loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn’t convert, as Salapka

entered in relief to get the final two outs for the win. Atlee scored in four consecutive innings in Tuesday’s semifinal against West Virginia, riding a complete game on the hill from Jordan Lucy, who had seven strikeouts in a 9-1 victory that set up the rematch. Layne noted the difference between Monday’s result and the championship when it came to his team. “We put up a lot of crooked numbers this week. We didn’t put up any crooked numbers on the scoreboard today. They got two of them, and that hurts,” Layne explained. “We left chances out there, and they maximized their opportunity. The plays that got us here, over 16 games, they just weren’t there today.” This Atlee team in many ways exhibited nine lives despite just two losses prior to the TOSC title game. Forced to the elimination bracket by Tuckahoe American in a 3-2 loss in the District V tournament on July 2, the team rallied to eliminate Tuckahoe National, then defeat Tuckahoe American twice, 5-2 and 4-2, to win the district title and earn a trip to Bluefield for the Little League Virginia state tournament. Atlee again faced elimination at the state level, climbing through the elimination bracket

Hydration not enough to prevent heat illness By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Have changes in training regimens reduced the risk of athlete deaths from heat-related illnesses? Maybe yes, maybe no. The data needed to clearly back either argument remain elusive. A 2018 article in Environmental Research Letters by researchers Scott C. Sheridan and Michael J. Allen reviewed more than 70 studies conducted over the previous 15 years of heat-related death and illness and found that collectively they suffer from one major flaw: lack of a standard definition of what constitutes a heat-related event. The review found that populations overall are less vulnerable to heat-related illnesses – likely because of improved adaptations to heat, such as in increase in the use of air conditioning. But it noted that adequate information on the impacts to specific groups such as outdoor workers or athletes is lacking. Still, the data that exists are worrying. A 2010 analysis by a research team led by Andrew J. Grundstein of the University of Georgia that was published in the International Journal of Biometeorology found that the number of heat-related illnesses among football players increased from 1980 to 2010. This increase occurred despite improved understanding of heat illness in the athletic training community. There are a number of reasons why athletes (and others) continue to die, no matter how much they hydrate. For one, The Grundstein study of football players found that more heat-related deaths occurred in the Southeast where the climate tends to be warmer and more humid than the rest of the

Left, Lee-Davis athletic trainer Sara Salvato measures the temperature and relative humidity during an afternoon practice at Lee-Davis Friday. The two numbers can be used to calculate the apparent temperature — or heat index — that can be used to fine tune practices to the outside conditions so as to minimize the risk of heat-related injury to players. Above, LeeDavis linemen prepare for football season with drills.

United States. When the weather is hot and humid, there is only so much that our built-in cooling system can accomplish. Sweating cools the body not by the movement of water from the inside of the body to the surface of the skin, but by the evaporation of the sweat from the skin. For anyone who vaguely remembers hearing the term “latent heat of vaporization” in a school science class, this is where the scientific gobbledygook gets very relevant to one’s life. It takes a lot of energy to

convert water from the liquid state to the vapor state: When you sweat and it evaporates, a lot of that energy comes out of you, and that loss of energy in turn reduces your body’s temperature. But there has to be room in the surrounding air for that water in your sweat to go. When the relative humidity is high, there is little evaporation and all that happens is water moves from inside the body to outside. You get dehydrated, but not any cooler. This is one reason why weather forecasters report the sensible temperature – a measure of how hot it feels to the

mine risk. “A loss of three percent of body weight during vigorous exercise can also significantly increase the risk for exertional heat-related illness,” the NFHS statement says. Those in charge of practicsee GUIDELINES, pg. 29

body. In the warm part of the year, the number reported is the heat index, which can be higher than the outside temperature. For example, as of the time this article is being written, the outside temperature is 87 degrees. But, because of the 56 percent relative humidity, it feels like 91 degrees. According to a National Weather Service heat index chart, if the relative humidity was more than 85 percent, the temperature would feel like more than 110 degrees. Jeff Orrock, meteorologistin-charge at the NWS office in Wakefield, the heat index is easy to understand, but it is not perfect. For example, the

temperature is measured in the shade and in a way that the temperature sensor is shielded from the wind. Wind would increase evaporation and reduce the heat index, while being in direct sunlight would raise the actual temperature and, in turn, the heat index. He said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends using a measure called the global wet-bulb temperature, which takes into account air temperature, relative humidity, wind and direct sunlight (or shade). Virginia High School League guidelines recommend use of the heat index. When the heat index is 105 degrees or greater, no outside activity is permitted. From 95 to 104 degrees, no equipment (like helmets or pads) should be worn. From 90 to 94 degrees, equipment should be removed as often as possible, such as during rest breaks. Below 89 degrees, unrestricted access to water should be provided along with frequent rest breaks. Neither measure, however, takes into account an athlete’s ability to move heat from the muscles, where it is being generated, to the skin, where it can be released. When that ability is

diminished, the heat builds up internally and, in severe cases, the athlete essentially cooks from inside as organs fail from the built-up heat. A vigorous circulatory system is required to transport that heat and improve the ability to cool. This is especially important in sports like football, where players – particularly linemen – are much bigger now than they used to be, say, in the 1970s. But this is where the system, despite all the progress and continued good intentions, breaks down, says Mike Craven of Mike’s Olympic Gym in Mechanicsville. Development of the circulatory system is most effective when an athlete’s capacity for intensive effort is individually assessed. In far too many cases, such assessment is not taking place. Part of the problem is that death is relatively uncommon – though Craven said that three high school athletes have died since June 11 during conditioning. “Because it’s rare, we keep making the same mistake,” Craven said. “Some kids can’t keep up with what the coach is asking of them.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

to face Vienna American, taking the title game by another 4-2 count to clinch their trip to North Carolina. But nine South Carolina runs over the fourth and fifth innings were too much for Atlee to overcome in the season’s final game. “We only had a goal of winning Game One,” Layne noted, asked to recall the beginning of his team’s journey during practice before District V Tournament play began in late June. “One of us has got to win, that was always our motto.” And with both Atlee and South Carolina finishing with 4-1 records, each giving the other their only defeat at the TOSC, Layne waxed poetic about the budding rivalry. “I bet you if we play them 10 times, they win five and we win five, but they got the one that mattered most this year,” he said.

Lee-Davis obtained a grant from teh Jordan McNair Foundation to purchase this recovery tub to provide rapid cooling of an athlete who is striken by heat illness.

Other Atlee team members include Cooper Molloy, Owen Goble, Chase Blumberg, William Haynie, Thomas Layne and Max Baedke. With the bulk of this roster at the age 11 level, Atlee fans begin to wonder what might be come 2020. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

es are requested to follow a heat index chart from the National Weather Service to make practice modifications, such as time changes or duration change, or cancellation. Many school divisions make this practice mandatory. The NFHS offers hydration guidelines, saying a person should drink 16 ounces of fluid two hours before, and eight to 16 additional ounces 15 minutes before activity. Four to eight ounces should be consumed three to four times hourly, with 16 to 20 ounces suggested “for every pound lost during physical activity” once activity ceases. Every public school studentathlete must have a current Virginia High School League (VHSL) physical examination form completed and on file at the school prior to being allowed to try out for any sport. On the form, one question

specifically asks if a student, “when exercising in heat, do you have severe muscle cramps or become ill?” The goal of the guidelines is to help ensure coaches, trainers and other adults in charge of high school athletic programs learn and follow them in order to keep players safe. An Albemarle County parent believes her son almost died two years ago after an offseason soccer conditioning practice due to a case of exertional heat illness that she believes was totally preventable. According to the Charlottesville Daily Progress, Patrick Clancy sued the student

activities director and the head boys soccer coach of Monticello High School, claiming his heat stroke occurred in part from a failure to follow heat index guidelines. The team, on a synthetic turf field, worked out in heat index values ranging from 107 to as much as 139 degrees over two hours. There was no trainer present, no water provided – students were told to bring two liters of water themselves – and no place to store said water other than in the hot sun. Litigation is pending. The case of Clancy, who quit perspiring and had to be rushed to a hospital to save his life, is

a stark reminder of what can happen to any student-athlete. One nearby district has added a new system to its high schools should an emergency occur. One “Polar Life Pod” was purchased for each Spotsylvania County high school, according to NBC4 in Washington. Its maker, Polar Products, describes it as a “portable, collapsible immersion system to facilitate” cooling when someone shows exertional heat illness symptoms. Several high schools in the Richmond metropolitan area have similar systems for rapid cooling. The pod holds a body, which can be immersed in ice and or cold water at the field while trainers check vital signs and await emergency assistance. In the battle to keep studentathletes safe on the field this time of year, the most important weapons for all are knowledge and understanding – and a willingness to follow the advice of experts.
