County removed as defendant in NAACP lawsuit By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER -- A federal judge ruled earlier this week that Hanover County be dismissed as a defendant in a case filed earlier this year by the Hanover County Unit of the NAACP. Robert E. Payne of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia granted a motion made by the county that removes the

Hanover County Board of Supervisors and the county as defendants, but does not excuse the Hanover County School Board from the litigation. In August, the local branch of the NAACP filed the suit, claiming the county’s refusal to change the names of two schools named for Confederate leaders violates the First and Fourteenth amendment rights of students who attend those schools.

The county’s motion to dismiss was based on the complaint’s “failure to state a claim upon which relief can be granted.” They also maintained the school board has authority regarding Hanover schools, not the board of supervisors. The complaint originally named Hanover County and the school board as defendants and claimed that the “defendants are compelling Plaintiff ’s members to express a view with which

they disagree, namely that slavery and other values of the Confederacy should be endorsed and glorified.” The complaint claimed that maintaining those names, in effect, creates “a school environment that denies African American students, including members of the NAACP, an equal opportunity to an education.” The plaintiffs originally alleged a violasee NAACP, pg. 4

Harris pointed to increased sales tax revenues, steady job growth, and increase in average home sale prices as continuing factors driving a healthy county economy. Harris said it all points to above average residential growth witnessed by the numerous

tion of the Equal Educational Opportunities Act, but, in an early stipulation agreement, they dismissed that claim against the county. Judge Payne wrote in his ruling that “Hanover County seeks dismissal of Claims 1 and 2 because it is not a proper part to this action for the reason that, under Virginia law, the School Board, and not the county, is the final policymaker for Hanover County public schools.” The county’s motion to dismiss also alleges “that the

percent from budget projections. In addition, Hanover County Public Schools returned almost $4 million in unused funds. Harris said that money will go toward funding a continuing technology program and

Complaint is legally insufficient because it makes no substantive factual allegations against the County that would support the First Amendment claim in Claim 1 and the Fourteenth amendment in Claim 2.” The plaintiffs in the case had claimed that the county is involved with policy making for the schools, but Payne wrote, “Under Virginia Law, the final policymaking body for Hanover County is the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. Moreover, under Virginia law, the School Board is the final policymaking authority for the Hanover

Public Schools.” The plaintiffs had argued that the county does have those policymaking powers because they appoint members to the school board and can seek a member’s removal. “Not one of those points supports the contention that the County is the policymaking authority for the operation of the schools,” Payne wrote in his ruling. Payne wrote the Complaint contains few allegations directly regarding the county. “To the extent that there are allegations that mention the County, these allegations primarily focus on when the

County integrated its public schools.” Hanover County Attorney Dennis Walter issued the following comment regarding Judge Payne’s ruling: “The County is pleased with the Court’s ruling that dismissed the claims made against the County.” “The ruling confirms the County’s position that the School Board, and not the Board of Supervisors or the County government, is responsible for the operations of the Hanover County Public Schools, including decisions regarding the names of the schools and the mascots at the

schools.” Walter said the suit continues, but without the county as a defendant. “As the ruling did not address the claims against the School Board, that portion of the lawsuit continues.” NAACP president Robert Barnette hinted the ruling was expected. “We were not surprised that the judge removed the Board of Supervisors from the lawsuit,” he said. Gregg Kelley, director of Development and Communications for Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, the firm representing the NAACP,

issued the following statement regarding the ruling: “The Hanover County Board of Supervisors argued to the judge that the Hanover County School Board was the proper defendant in this case. The judge agreed with their position that the School Board is the proper defendant because the School Board has the ability under Virginia law to change the names,” Kelley said. “The claims against the School Board stand so we will continue moving forward with our case,” he concluded. The trial is scheduled to begin in May 2020.

purchase new buses for the school system. “We have a school system that is second to none,” he said. That prudent budget, coupled with solid economic indicators, is only part of the good news, according to Harris. A $1.4 million federal grant recently approved by the Hanover County Board

of Supervisors will allow the county to place 12 new firefighters in the Mechanicsville area, the busiest station in the system. Harris said the station answered 4,200 calls last year. “We’ll be able to double our workforce there,” Harris said. Hanover’s Emergency Communications Department is the first in Virginia to be

certified in all three protocols, Fire, EMS and Sheriff, one of only 15 such designated agencies in the U.S. “We’re showing others the way,” Harris said. The Sheriff’s Office recorded the lowest crime rate since 1975. Harris said Human Services are meeting the needs of an additional 1,700 clients due to Medicaid Expansion, and same day access has meant more prompt and more immediate service for those served. “Wait times have been reduced by 80 percent,” Harris told the assembly of local business leaders, elected and appointed officials, and interested citizens. Regarding infrastructure, Harris pointed to projects like the new Atlee Library, numerous improvements at the airport, including a new terminal building, and scheduled road projects like Sliding Hill and

Pole Green widening and continued improvements along U.S. 360. Harris said the recent formation of a Broadband Committee will search for solutions regarding internet access in far eastern and western portions of the county. Officials have partnered with Comcast to apply for state money to begin some of those upgrades that will supply reliable internet service to about 270 businesses and residents. It all adds up to a county that has plenty to offer to those who live in Hanover, do business, or just visit. Harris summed it up by pointing out key factors highlighting this year’s State of the County position. He pointed to the best schools in the area with all schools fully accredited, the safest community in the metro

area, the lowest real estate tax, and a flourishing business community. He also noted that Hanover County maintains a AAA bond rating, one of only 70 counties in the U.S to boast that designation. Harris said a team approach and working partnerships are key factors in the county’s success and described the county’s future as prosperous. “You guys are making the difference every day,” he told the audience. Thomas said the county continues to attract new business and create jobs, more than 2,200 of them last year. “We have a great story to tell,” he said. More than 50 businesses announced intentions to locate in Hanover last year, and 11

From the managing editor

Don’t take for granted those who respond By Melody Kinser Managing Editor

Y

ou know they’re available whenever you call, but do you really think about how valuable our first responders are to us? Fortunately, during budget season, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors acknowledges the value of Hanover Fire-EMS, the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, and Hanover County Emergency Communications. Our public safety departments are, without question, among the best in Virginia. Last Wednesday, I experience first-hand -- again -- just how important these men and women are when a fall at home led to a call to 9-1-1. The Emergency Communications dis-

patcher was so kind and compassionate as she gathered the necessary information for the paramedics who would be arriving at my door shortly. Having been diagnosed with arthritis about five years ago, extreme caution is a routine day. However, sometimes the right knee has other plans. Such was the case on Oct. 30, when that knee decided to collapse, sending me to the floor. (I have a friend who, after asking if I was OK, would start laughing now. We all chuckle at falls.) Anyway, three paramedics were met at the door by my soon-to-be 89-year-old mother. Their professionalism and care made such an impression that, upon their departure, I immediately called Battalion Chief Gregory R. Martin, who serves as public information officer for Chief Jethro Piland III. I asked Greg to convey my

thanks and appreciation to the chief, who, coincidentally, was standing nearby when I called. I was one of the lucky ones in that there wasn’t a significant injury, but considered myself blessed to receive such concentrated attention. Despite two swollen knees and some soreness in my arms, I managed to get to work and thought about the many positives we have to live in Hanover County. While no one has a goal of needing the services of Fire-EMS, it certainly is a blessing to know the crews are a phone call away. This is one resident who is sincerely grateful for the assistance provided last week. So, thank those with public safety when you see them -- because you never know when you will need them.

A network of bicycles delivering the news, no more By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist There are lots of things that used to be that are no more, and lamenting their loss does absolutely nothing to bring them back. But to reflect on those things that seemed so permanent at the time and exist no more and are only remembered in the recollections of those who lived them seems an appropriate way to document these ghosts of the past.

At 5 a.m. in Richmond or its closest suburbs, you don’t encounter many people on the street, and the first yawns of a city are barely detectable. It wasn’t always that way. Decades ago, in the dead of night, small groups of boys on bicycles gathered to await delivery of their daily supply of newspapers, usually gathered around a wired trash can. Some shuffled their feet to keep warm, while others slumped near their bikes

Trump defended after Army officer addresses Ukraine The truth about the President’s telephone call to Ukraine is finally being made available to the public. It appears this whole uproar started with two complaints filed by Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman. Col. Vindman is an immigrant born in Ukraine. That, combined with his military background, should have raised questions related to the validity of his claims. Many immigrants serve in our military in an effort to avoid deportation. Their loyalties do not lie in the interest of our country primarily but in the interest of their own status regarding their presence here. In addition, the military complex’s primary interest is in protecting their readiness to provide military assistance to those elements useful to their actions in foreign countries. They are not concerned with the legislative or administrative efforts to solve matters diplomatically and, in fact, are frequently in disagreement with those diplomatic decisions. Thus, Rep. Adam Schiff should have known to be wary of these claims. But instead, in his zeal to justify his impeachment claims against our President, Rep. Schiff jumped on these claims apparently assisting in their further development into formal accusations to his committee. Our country has every right to deny aid to a foreign country if past aid has been lost due to corruption in that country’s handling of the funds. In that respect, Trump had every right as our President to delay funding of an additional $391 million of taxpayer funds until Ukraine provided assurance that former corruption would be investigated and not see LETTERS, pg. 8

My route was only two streets east of Willow Lawn, each running down to Commonwealth Avenue. Stonewall Jackson Middle students to perform ‘The Music Man’ Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com

ECHANICSVILLE -- Meredith Willson's “The Music Man” is a six-time, Tony Award-winning musical comedy that has been entertaining audiences since it

opened on Broadway in 1957. It is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation. “The Music Man” will be presented at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9, at Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Mechanicsville. The production is being directed by Jennifer Ann Bryant Hicks,

the school’s theatre teacher. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students have been rehearsing since the first week of school. Hicks said “These students are excited to share this classic American Broadway musical with you.” “The Music Man” follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons

the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band that he vows to organize – this, despite the fact that he doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the town librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by

curtain's fall. Tickets are on sale for $5 at the school during the day or can be purchased at the door the nights of the show. The cast includes: Tyler Adams, Lauren Adt, Mica Clayton, Grady Cornwell, Juliana Dean, Ellie Douglas, Zion Franklin, Josh Gorman, Ellasyn Hoole, Baylor Hughes,

Reese Hunt, Ashley Imbert, Sam Johnson, Harrison LaPenna, Mason LaPenna, Jude Lenhart, Emma Leudesdorff, Sydnee Logan, Sara Maddox, Ben Miller, Katie Neal, Dylan Parker, Bethany Siron, Jaidyn Smith, Devan Wagner, Francesco Wells, Dylan Wright, and Grayson Wright.

He has appeared on more than 40 recordings, crossing multiple genres, with studio work that has been featured on television, at theme parks, and in video games. Simon Redley of Music Republic Magazine said, “Sims is a real find. One of the most exciting saxophonists — and band leaders— I have heard in a long time.” Sims earned his undergraduate degree from

West Virginia University, studied jazz and improvisation at the New England Conservatory of Music, and earned a doctorate in classical woodwind performance from Boston University. He serves as the director of Jazz at West Virginia University and performs regularly throughout the U.S. and southeast Asia. Accompanying Sims in Ashland will be Ayinde Williams on piano, Mike Hawkins on bass, and CJ Wolf on drums. Ticket prices range from $15 to $25 and can be purchased at the box office at 205 England St. in Ashland or online at ashlandtheatre.org.

on the best of mornings, it might get you hot chocolate at White Tower on the way home. By far, the best culinary encounters on our early morning routine was catching up with another symbol of lost Americana, the milkman. For 26 cents, you could get a quart of the coldest chocolate milk in the world, served in a glass bottle with ice chips still sticking to the side. We all scattered once the donuts or milk were gone, each of us headed home to climb

back in a warm bed for that last hour of sleep before school. I lived that life for several years, seven days a week, and, honestly, I still think back on the magic of those mornings, the camaraderie of a group of hard-working kids who may not have met if not for their role as carriers and the daily satisfaction of completing a task in a job well done fashion. I suppose Im forgetting the snowy mornings, or the downpours of Spring, but the world of paperboys, in my mind, is

something worth missing. I hope there are still towns when paperboys hop on bikes to deliver papers to their neighbors, but I fear they are few and far between considering the security issues associated with a 12-year-old out alone in the middle of the night. Thankfully, we never considered any of that and I can't think of a single instance of a kid being assaulted or even harassed. No doubt, it’s a time gone by, but the ones who spent

Scotchtown DAR donates ‘Clean Kits’ to non-profit Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com BEAVERDAM – Hanover County’s Scotchtown DAR Chapter celebrated part of its National Day of Service with a large donation to Hanover Safe Place. Each year in October the NSDAR celebrates its local service outreach with special projects. This year, to recognize both Domestic Abuse prevention and Women’s Issues, Scotchtown DAR members partnered with Thrivent to secure grant money to fund the purchase of “Clean Kits” for Hanover Safe Place. Members began in July to secure a grant for the funds, and then purchased the Clean Kit supplies, and packed the baskets for Hanover Safe Place. These kits are used for clients who

are transitioning out of abusive relationship situations into safe spaces. The kits were delivered in October, at which time members toured the administrative offices and then learned of the ongoing needs of the local community organization. National Daughters of the American Revolution is a service organization of over 1 million members world-wide since its founding in 1890. R-MC wins heart-stopper against W&L

Rachel Witham for The Local

Randolph-Macon wide receiver Mike Avent barely misses a touchdown grab in the fourth quarter of the Yellow Jackets’ come from behind 36-35 win over Washington and Lee Saturday. Avent would later score on a 6-yard pass with 39 seconds to go to keep the Yellow Jackets alive. Chris Vidal’s last-second field goal sealed the victory for Randolph-Macon.

By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – When Washington and Lee called timeout in the final seconds of their back-and-forth battle with Randolph-Macon Saturday, attempting to ice Yellow Jacket kicker Chris Vidal, he calmly went through the motions as if he was winning the game at that moment. Moments later, holder

Andrew Ihle picked up a poor snap, quickly placed the football in position for Vidal to rocket it through the uprights. In one play, a season of complete frustration for Randolph-Macon’s kicking team melted away after the Yellow Jackets, down by 9 points twice in the fourth quarter, used an onside kick recovery to set up Vidal’s heroics for a stunning 36-35 victory over the Generals to keep RandolphMacon tied for first place in

the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) at 6-0. It was the Yellow Jackets’ seventh consecutive victory, a victory earned by heart, guts and a never-breaking mentally in the face of four General touchdowns in the second half of 66 yards or longer. “I told [Vidal] a few weeks ago, we’re going to need you to win some of these games,” said Randolph-Macon head football coach Pedro Arruza. “He just

came up big. That was a huge kick under a ton of pressure.” Vidal missed the first six games due to a groin injury, missed two kicks in his debut two weeks ago at Southern Virginia, and missed an extra point in the first half after a 15-yard touchdown pass from Presley Egbers to DeAndre Gill, who got one foot inbounds in the back corner of the end zone for the score. The game proved a classic

case of a tale of two halves. Randolph-Macon’s defense allowed a total of 80 first-half yards to the Generals. But Washington and Lee began the second half with their biggest receiving threat back on the field. Montgomery Owen, suspended for the first half due to an ejection last week, made an immediate impact, catching a 66-yard touchdown pass from Jack Pollard to put the Generals back in front at 14-13.

The Mechanicsville Local

The Yellow Jackets, who dominated time of possession, owning the ball for 42:30, answered with a Vidal 25-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. It was 16-14. The game was about to explode. On the Generals’ second play of their next series, Pollard found Owen on the left sideline, who escaped the grasp of Stephen Richardson and see R-MC, pg. 28

Atlee shows heart in loss to visiting Varina turned off, the Atlee seniors shared one more special moment on their home field together. They each took an emotional walk down memory lane, reflecting on the last four years spent together. For Tyler Warren, it wasn’t as much about the wins and losses, as the friendships made. “I’m going to remember all of these guys” Warren said. “I definitely want to always stay in touch as we begin the next phase of our lives.” Atlee will travel to play rival Hanover to close out their season Friday. Dan Fritz can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

By Daniel Fritz For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Football, just like any other sport, must have a winner and loser. It is the nature of the game, and for that reason a score must be kept. After four quarters a victor is always declared. Although the scoreboard will forever show that the Atlee Raiders fell to the Varina Blue Devils 57-16 on Friday night in their final home game of the season, there is much more of a narrative than what those final numbers indicate. “I’m really proud of everyone” said senior quarterback Kody Ohl after the game. “It doesn’t matter what the scoreboard shows. We have a great group of guys, and I’m thankful for all my teammates.” There will be no playoffs this year for Atlee. The emotion of playing your last game in front of a home crowd was shown by many of the Raiders set to graduate in the spring. Atlee coach Matt Gray reflected on what this group has meant to him personally over the last four years. “This is a special group of guys” Gray said. “I remember them arriving as a bunch of young teenagers, and now I’m watching them leave the program as young men.” On the field, the Raiders had to deal with one of the area’s top teams Friday night. The Blue Devils entered the contest with a record of 7-1. Varina showed why it looks like a team poised to make a deep post season run. Varina intercepted a Tyler Warren pass on third down on the first possession of the game. Two plays later Blue Devil quarterback Bobby Dunn launched a deep ball from midfield that found his receiver Barry Hill for the game’s first touchdown

less than two minutes into the contest. The Blue Devils quickly put the game away. Their next three possession on offense all ended in touchdowns by Brysen Ross – two on the ground, and the latter a pass from his quarterback Dunn. Desperate to find some answers of their own, coach Gray and the Raiders went to a different look on offense to try and generate some momentum. Tyler Warren, who usually serves as the Raiders quarterback, moved to play tight end and receiver. The move would

allow Atlee’s top playmaker to have a little more space to work against Varina’s defense. This opened the door for fellow senior Kody Ohl to enter the game at quarterback. “There are a lot of elements in Kody’s game that fit well in the offense” Gray said. “He gives us another layer to work with.” Ohl took advantage of his opportunity. In the closing minutes of the second quarter, Ohl found receiver Carter Nash deep down the sideline. Nash did a spectacular job securing the catch and getting his feet

down before being knocked out of bounds. The 34-yard gain set up the Raiders with a first and goal. The drive ended with a 29-yard Josh Atkinson field goal to get the Raiders on the scoreboard for the first time. In the third quarter, with the Raiders still trailing by a wide margin, Ohl would go to the deep ball once again. After eluding the Varina rush, he heaved a pass to Alex Oliver who completed the 46-yard gain, setting up the Raiders just outside goal line. The next play, Ohl connect-

ed with Warren for the Raiders’ first touchdown. “Honestly, I wasn’t even sure what route [Warren] was running” Ohl admitted. “The offensive line did a good job blocking the play, and that gave me time to find him in the end zone.” The switch to Ohl proved to be a productive one. Ohl connected with his top target, Warren, seven times in total, for 139 yards. Ohl threw for an astounding 371 yards in the game. After the clock hit all zeroes and the scoreboard had been

C-feds cannot keep up with Henrico attack aged to force two turnovers on the day. Payne caught an interception early in the second quarter, but the Confederates were unable to capitalize. Lavell Williams got in on the action also, intercepting a pass from Vozar at the Lee-Davis 23 to prevent Henrico from extending its lead before halftime. Lee Davis looks to get back on track next week, hosting long-time rival Patrick Henry in the Tomato Bowl. It will be the last game of the Confederates’ season. “I still believe in our kids and they go to believe they can win,” Turnage said. Rodney Robinson can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

By Rodney Robinson For the Mechanicsville Local HENRICO – Early on, Lee-Davis showed determination to fight at Henrico Friday night. After the Warriors took a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter, the Confederates marched down field to score one of their own – on a fourthand-goal when quarterback Mike Joyce connected with receiver Coleton Payne for a 10-yard TD early in the second quarter. Unfortunately for LeeDavis, despite the fight in the players, the athleticism of the Warriors proved too much to contain. The Joyce to Payne connection was the only score the Confederates could muster in a 63-8 Henrico victory. Lee Davis fell behind by 15 points early in the first quarter, after a 3-yard touchdown run by Eric McDaniels and a 38-yard touchdown reception by Frederick Jones. After those two scoring drives, the Confederates got the ball at their 32-yard line. Joyce – with 50 yards rushing and 20 passing on the drive – led the Confederates to Henrico’s 10-yard line as time expired in the first quarter. On fourth down, Joyce dropped back to pass and found Payne for their score. Chase Stattelman’s 2-point conversion run brought the Confederates within a touchdown of Henrico. That was as close as they got to the Warriors the rest of the game. Henrico scored 34 unanswered points in the second quarter to put the game out of reach. Offensively, Lee Davis got off to a slow start, generating just 12 yards of total offense on their first two drives of the game. two scores. On their next six drives, the Confederates amassed over 130 yards of total offense. But afterward they could muster little offense against Henrico. “We feel like we had some chances, and we didn’t take advantage of it,” said Lee-Davis head football coach Ryan Turnage. It may have been a

frustrating night, but Turnage stressed the Confederates have to keep “trusting what we’re doing.” Lee Davis was led offensively by Mike Joyce and Coleton Payne. Joyce had 62 yards rushing and 80 yards passing. Payne had two receptions for 23 yards. Defensively, Lee Davis struggled to stop the Warriors’ big

plays. Henrico had four scoring plays for more than 30 yards. On Henrico’s first score, quarterback Hayden Vozar found Frederick Jones for a 38-yard touchdown reception. In the second quarter, Marqe Harvey broke a 57-yard touchdown run and on the next drive, Kwynton George had a 74-yard touchdown run. Henrico then fol-

lowed those two big plays with a 72-yard punt return. Those big plays from the Warriors were the difference makers in the game. “We can’t play from behind, that’s the big thing,” Turnage said. “With the way we’re built on offense, we need to play with the lead or close.” The Confederates man-

raced untouched 75 yards for a score. Washington and Lee regained the lead 21-16. Again Randolph-Macon used a grinding, time consuming drive, but, again, it stalled late. Vidal hit another 25-yard field goal to cut the deficit to two points with 6:47 left. Enter Washington and Lee’s Josh Breece. The tailback took the first play from scrimmage and busted open up the middle, outracing the Randolph-Macon defense to the end zone. It was another one play, 75-yard drive. It was 28-19, and the Yellow Jacket defense was on the ropes. The belief, and effort, of Randolph-Macon never wavered, the offense driving 67 yards in 11 plays, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Andrew Ihle to trim the lead to 28-26 with 3:17 left. The Yellow Jackets opted not to try an onside kick, and the Generals took over at their own 25. On first down, Yellow Jacket fans lived the nightmare again, as Breece, again, ripped a run up the middle to score one more time from 75 yards. With just 3:06 left, the Generals led 35-26. Balance, and patience, in spite of a clock running very low on time, carried the Yellow Jackets back down the field. Another 11-play drive, this time of 88 yards, ended in a 6-yard touchdown pass from Egbers to Mike Avent. It was 35-33, and time for the onside kick. Vidal sent the equivalent of a hard-hit grounder to a shortstop, and it bounced off the

leg of a Generals player. Bryan Sullivan dove on the football at the 46. Randolph-Macon had 37 seconds to make it to field goal range. “I’d love to tell you I scripted it that way, but players win games,” Arruza said. “We got some guys that really stepped up in the clutch.” Egbers, who was 23-for-35 for 218 passing yards, completed three passes, the last a 15-yard strike to Tim Hanratty at the Washington and Lee 21. Ten seconds remained. The clock stopped long enough to move the chain, and the Yellow Jackets raced to the line to spike the ball, and send out Vidal. Ihle’s work on a bad snap to get the football in place for Vidal will go down as the silent champion of this game. Vidal’s kick left no doubt from the time it cleared the line. Egbers completed passes to nine different receivers, and also rushed for 115 yards. Tre Frederick had 32 carries for 154 yards, extending his ODAC alltime record in carries (897) and yards (4,892). The ODAC Championship will be decided Saturday when the Yellow Jackets travel to Bridgewater. The Eagles are also 6-0 in conference play, but 8-0 overall. Sporting a balanced offensive attack and a relentless defense, it will be RandolphMacon’s toughest test this season. “We’ll be okay,” Arruza said. “I feel good about, you know, the guys that we have. Some guys will step up, and we’ll be fine.” Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
