Republicans hold control locally as state goes blue Smithson: 53% of voters headed to the polls last Tuesday
By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER -- If the Commonwealth of Virginia turned blue last Tuesday, a majority of voters in Hanover County didn’t get the message. While Democrats recorded a number of upsets and defeated several Republican incumbents statewide, elections in Hanover County held to a more traditional role with Republicans registering wins in most local contests. “Hanover Republicans did their part on Tuesday by sweeping every single race on the ballot from State Senate to the [Hanover County] Board of Supervisors,” said Nick Collette, chairman of the Hanover Republican Committee. “Each campaign should be proud of the results.” A coordinated effort by GOP candidates, coupled with a strong turnout of Republican base voters, made the difference according to the man at the helm of the county Republican Party.
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor HANOVER – While Democrats swept through the commonwealth on Tuesday, Nov. 5, to regain control of the Senate and House of Delegates in the Virginia General Assembly, Hanover County voters stayed close to their conservative roots. And they headed to the polls
in significant numbers. “Historically, local elections in Hanover have maintained a 25% turnout on average, but this election was closer to a gubernatorial with 53% voter turnout,” Voter Registrar/Director of Elections Teresa “Teri” Smith said. “Hanover, once again, brought out our see VOTERS pg. 8

For voters at the Mechanicsville Elementary School precinct, there was a bit of a wait on Election Day. But, Hanover County voters weren't deterred -- they waited to cast their ballots.
“I was particularly impressed with the amount of coordination we saw from the campaigns for General Assembly to the local candidates running for Board of Supervisors,” Collette said. He credited that strong turnout with providing the edge in a closely contested Senate race where chal-
lenger Debra Rodman was barely defeated by incumbent Siobhan Dunnavant. “The strong turnout from conservatives across Hanover resulted in retaining a very tough Senate seat in the 12th District, but the real credit for that goes to Senator Dunnavant herself and the incredible team see CONTROL, pg. 16

Lee-Davis High School recognized students for the September character trait "respect" in a recent ceremony. Being honored for respect means that one honors the thoughts, feelings, and diversity of others and holds in high regard the property of others and of the school. The September Students of the Month were Kayveon Canada, Bi Ni Sa Ngwa, Jake Perkins, and Sydney Spencer. The school community emphasizes a culture of personal growth through character development in and out of the classroom. The character recognition program was developed by and for students to honor those who model these traits daily. Lee-Davis High School believes that this can make a difference in the school, the community, and the world, one person at a time.

HANOVER – A Montpelier man was taken into custody following a head-on collision that claimed the lives of two Louisa County women. Sgt. Steve DiLoreto, public information officer for the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, said, 41-year-old Ernest Edmund Johnston was arrested and charged with DWI (driving while under the influence). The victims were identified as Tonna Jean McKinney, 68, and Shena Marie McKinney, 20, both of Bumpass. The elder
McKinney was driving a sedan that was traveling east on West Patrick Henry Road east of Tower Road, Johnston was driving a pickup truck that was traveling west. On Tuesday, Nov. 5, DiLoreto said that the two-vehicle crash took place around 2:12 p.m. “The preliminary investigation revealed that a pickup traveling west crossed the solid lines and collided headon with a sedan traveling east, the sergeant added. The two women, DiLoreto continued, were pronounced dead at the scene.
There were two more occupants in the sedan. They, along with the driver of the pickup truck, were taken to area hospitals. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Tonna McKinney and Shena McKinney during this difficult time,” DiLoreto said, speaking on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff. “We ask if anyone witnessed the incident to please contact the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office at 804-365-6140,” he said. Last week, Johnston was being held without bond at the Pamunkey Regional Jail. Additional charges are pending.

Election night at daily newspapers is electric By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
A
sense of melancholy seems to roll in during elections since I went from daily newspapers to weeklies. There was an energy coursing through the newsroom when you’re “patiently” waiting on the results to start coming in and reporters typing as fast as their fingers could go to make extended deadlines. I noticed Powhatan Today Editor Laura McFarland had posted about not having any pizza. Election Night always meant pizza for the staff as the wait was on for the ballots to be counted. I’ve always been exposed to weekly newspapers, but had never been hands-on with one until I arrived in Mechanicsville in 2008. Today’s technology has certainly eased the stress of getting those results. Unfortunately, the Virginia State Board of Elections website wasn’t cooperating Tuesday night, Nov. 5. I kept updating and checking, as well as monitoring com-
ments on our social media sites. Trust me, it can be challenging. The last newspaper in West Virginia where I was managing editor covered Election Night at the courthouse, where a huge blackboard was set up in the corridor outside the county clerk’s office. This is no joke -- chalk and an eraser were imperative items. A neighboring county at another time in my career used paper ballots. No, I can’t make up this stuff. There were times we didn’t get results for seats in the West Virginia Legislature until Thursday. Without a doubt, Teresa “Teri” Smithson, Voter Registrar/Director of Elections, and her staff are among the best, if not the best, in Virginia when it comes to Election Day. They are so cooperative with your newspapers, and we appreciate that helpful spirit. I don’t think an election goes by that I don’t remember my first time in a voting booth. That was the year 18-year-olds could legally cast their ballots. It was a milestone moment for me, because my parents never -- and I do mean never -- missed an election. Mom, who celebrated No.
89 on Sunday, was with me last week when we voted at Rural Point Elementary School. Back to the voting booth. An election worker offered to go in with me to “help” me. My home county used those monstrous machines with the lever to close and open the curtain. When the election worker attempted to accompany me, I spun around, looked him in the eyes, and said, “You do know who my father is, don’t you?” Dad was an imposing man with a very deep voice. He was a gentle giant, but could have an intimidating presence. Suffice it to say, the election worker got out of my way. Those were still the days when $5 and a cheap bottle of whiskey could buy a vote. And there were drivers going up every hollow (holler) and creek to haul voters to the polls. I hope you voted. Maybe your candidate(s) didn’t win, but you made a difference by taking part in the process. Dad left us 27 years ago, but I have a feeling he knew Mom and I did our duty by voting.
For Washington fans, a championship -- finally By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist My first introduction to the Washington Senators blared out of a small Zenith radio that sat on a shelf
in my grandmother’s kitchen. When I visited in the summer, the scratchy broadcasts of Senators baseball games were as routine as the August humidity.

Another highlight of the summer was a visit to Griffith Stadium to see the Senators play the Yankees. I was too young to appreciate the greatness I witnessed in the form of Roger Maris,

A different story about being a paperboy I read with interest Jim Ridolphi’s article on paperboys. I also was a paperboy about 60 years ago in Salisbury, Maryland. My recollection of that experience was nothing like Mr. Ridolphi’s. I had about 90 houses on my route. We had no special bikes or baskets. The company gave us a big canvas bag that wrapped around the handlebars. It was a nightmare to keep it from sliding off when full with folded papers. I started in the sixth grade. Our routes were in the afternoon. So right after school, instead of playing with the other kids, I road my bike to the neighborhood store to pick up my bundle. I too had to fold each paper, so you could throw it and it would stay together. No fancy rubber bands in those days. I still toss my wife a folded paper at times after I finish reading it. I think she hates that. Every Friday night I had to go around to 90 houses and collect $0.42 for the week’s cost of the papers. Every week! Of course, people would not be home, sometimes for weeks. “Mr. Jones”, I would say, “You missed the last three weeks payments so you now owe me $1.26”. “No way”, Mr. Jones would say. Can you imagine the hassle that was and how a child in the sixth grade had to argue with adults over $0.42? The rich families would give me $0.50 instead of $0.42, “Keep the change”. The paper never stopped, seven days a week. Forget about going somewhere for the weekend with your family. Miss one day and the calls would come. see LETTERS, pg. 8

Resident questions Trump defense I read with interest the defense of President Trump in the Nov. 6 edition of The Mechanicsville Local. It was based on little evidence, lots of speculation, a little conspiracy theorizing, and unpatriotic innuendo about a Purple Heart recipient thrown in. symbols and marks than the slow progress of the contest. As the years passed, I slowly formed an allegiance to the hapless Senators, the trip on the streetcar to Griffith, and the glaring futility of my favorite baseball team. It had then been more than four decades since Walther Johnson had clinched a seventh game victory for the team, and Washington had raised its last World Series trophy. And every Senator fan back then knew the glory days were long gone, and changed ownerships and bad deals had stripped the team of any chance to compete in a talentridden American League. The ultimate insult came in 1960 when the team was moved to Minnesota and became the Twins, and an expansion team took the field
in D.C., a squad that never achieved the same allegiance as the original crew. To this day, many old Senator fans still follow and root for the Twins, a sign of dedication for the old Nats. The end came in 1970 when the expansion Senators became the Texas Rangers and professional baseball in Washington began a selfimposed hiatus. Now, honestly, that team that left the city for Texas bore little resemblance to the group witnessed by those hardcore fans who had suffered through days at Griffith during the 1950s, their only flicker of hope coming on an occasional Harmon Killebrew home run. Like many things, you don’t know what you have until you lose it, and fans immediately lamented the loss of baseball
in D.C. It took 23 years for baseball to return, and even longer for the pennant to return to the District. For an old-time Senators fan, the victory provided some sense of finality to a pursuit that began in clam diggers and most likely will end with a walker. But, there also was something akin to guilt because this group of professional baseball players somehow seemed different from our beloved losers of the 1950s and 1960s. And, of course, there’s that pesky detail that our Senators are still alive and well in the Twin Cities, so there’s that. But, I still have to tell you seeing that swirled W associated with a World Series trophy still provided the great feelings that only championships can provide. One of my friends was quick to dampen the mood by reminding me that this group is not the same team that filled my memories on those hot summer days at Griffith. “They’re not the Senators,” he said. But they are, sort of.

Canova Peterson, Mechanicsvlle, and Angela Kelly-Wiecek, Chickahominy; also ran unopposed and retained their seats on the board. Despite the predicted losses, Hanover Democratic chair Toni Radler said this election was meaningful for Hanover and the Commonwealth. “This was one of the most exciting elections for Hanover in decades,” Radler said. “First, we want to congratulate our winning Democrats, Sen. Jennifer McClellan and Ashland District Supervisor Faye Prichard. Both of these candidates are among the smartest and hardest working elected officials who put constituents above politics; and that always serves constituents best.” Radler noted that an energized write-in ballot for the 97th District House seat and the close race with Rodman

and Dunnavant drove voters to the polls, a double-edged sword for Democratic candidates in Hanover. “The Chris Peace write-in campaign in the eastern end of the county energized voters, and in the western end of the county, the RodmanDunnavant energized voters there,” Radler said. “We are always happy to see high voter turnouts, but the high turnout impacted our local races. We had some of the very best candidates you could hope for – but, even for the local Board of Supervisor elections, people voted along party lines,” she continued. “It can be discouraging when you see the alternatives, but we Hanover Democrats are treating it as a dress rehearsal for 2020.” Collette said the Democratic message didn’t play well in Hanover County. “Democrats continue to focus on hyper-partisan, divisive issues like third trimester abortions and limiting the Second Amendment rights
of law-abiding citizens, but that kind of message doesn't work in Hanover and I think Tuesday's results proved that,” Collette said. Hanover’s choices last Tuesday could provide an important voice when the Democrats take control of the Virginia General Assembly in January, according to Collette. “When Democrats take control of the General Assembly in January, there will be a lot to be concerned about, but here in Hanover we have strong, conservative representation, and I have no doubt that our elected officials will be fighting for the very constituents that elected them and pushing back against the extreme agenda we are sure to see from the Democrats,” Collette said. Radler described the upcoming legislative agenda differently. “I think we can look forward to sensible gun control legislation...legislation that won't take people's guns from

them, but will at least ensure some protection preventing mentally or emotionally disturbed people from buying guns, Radler said. She said there are other important issues on that agenda. “I think the ERA will at least come up for a vote, rather than being killed in committee by Del. [Buddy] Fowler, as it was last year, she said. “We hope that progress will be made on education funding, roads and relieving overcrowding in mental health facilities. Regarding redistricting and the reality that Democrats will now be drawing legislative district lines, the two local leaders had a different take on the situation. “As for redistricting, it will be very interesting to see if the Democrats put their money where their mouth is on this issue, Collette said. “For years now, they have talked about "nonpartisan" redistricting; now that they hold all the power, we'll see if those were empty lies or genuine concerns. It is far too early to

determine what effect redistricting will have on Hanover's legislative districts, he added. Radler said it’s time for adjustments to what she described as extreme gerrymandering that took place under Republican control. “Statewide, we are thrilled that Democrats now control both houses in the General Assembly, she said. “This means that after the census, when redistricting occurs, we won't see the extreme gerrymandering that has left so many localities in a no win situation for Democrats and minorities. Radler said it’s unclear where those redistricting efforts will be focused, but noted there could be a need for changes in Hanover. “ It's hard to know what redistricting might occur in Hanover, but we have some crazy county districts ... Beaverdam, for instance, runs from the far west end of the County on the Louisa line across 95 to Hanover Courthouse and south on 301... not exactly a cohesive district. Also, we'll probably be in play again as to whether

There were no reports of longs lines or major issues due to the efforts of these special citizens that serve, she added. “The voting year will begin on March 3, 2020, with the Presidential Primary, followed by our Ashland Town Election in May, another Primary Election and June, and then, of course, the Presidential Election in on November, Smithson continued. “Ask anyone that participates in the election, and the answer will be consistent, it is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community, and at the same time, take part in making history, she said. Hanover ends up in the first or the seventh congressional district, she said. The Democratic chair said she is excited about the possibilities. Collette indicated he hopes the change in control could affect what he considered positive gains made under Republican control of the legislature. “Because of Republican leadership in the General Assembly, Virginia currently has the strongest economy in the United States. That is sure to change under the Democrats if they allow the fringe left to take full control of their caucuses, which appears to be the case in the days after the election. Radler said she’s looking forward to a new direction in the Commonwealth’s legislative bodies. “We are excited to look forward to a General Assembly that will be working for all of us, not the gun lobby or the energy lobby or other special interest groups that drown out constituent voices and rob us from being the focus of our duly elected representatives.

Set in the rural England during the 17th century, “Vinegar Tom” tells the story of four nonconforming women tried for witchcraft and a village of accusers desperately trying to keep them in their proper place. The play is based on the premise that “we often need something to blame,” says faculty director Ben Lambert. “When a family falls on misfortune, they’re angry and see the four women as the easiest to blame because they don’t fit the mold.”

MECHANICSVILLE -- An alliance between two Christian groups in Mechanicsville, Feed More (the Central Virginia Food Bank) and several local stores (Food Lion, Kroger, BJs, Aldi and Wawa) is assisting Hanover County residents get needed food. Every day, volunteers from Hanover Friends Church and the Knights of Columbus of the Church of the Redeemer collect food from the participating stores. Every Tuesday evening, the food is distributed to local families. In 2018, this association -- enabled by the spirit of kindness -- distributed nearly 200,000 pounds of food. According to Redeemer’s Grand Knight Jeff Uerz, the bond between Hanover Friends Church and Church of the Redeemer was strengthened when the Knights of Columbus contributed $500 to the Hanover Friends Church Food Bank for equipment needed to store collected food.

Following Jesus’ command to love others, Hanover Friends Church has been serving the community as a Feed More partner for nearly 30 years. Church of the Redeemer is a Roman Catholic Church that bears the name of Jesus Christ and aspires to practice His ideology. Redeemer’s 200-plus members of the Knights of

The privilege of being part of the Food Bank ministry allows members to put their faith into action. The Hanover County alliance that is providing food to

Patriots win third-straight Tomato Bowl By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – The first two drives of Tomato Bowl 61 between Patrick Henry and Lee-Davis were a microcosm of the action which unfolded before a chilled crowd. While the Patriots finished their first possession with a 49-yard touchdown run from quarterback Alex Sikkar, LeeDavis stalled inside the red zone, quarterback Mike Joyce throwing an interception on fourth down. From there, it was all Patrick Henry, which won its third consecutive Tomato Bowl 35-0 to finish 7-3 in the regular season and clinch the fourth seed in the Region 4B playoffs. The Confederates ended another disappointing season at 2-8. “We knew Lee-Davis would come out and give their best effort. I thought we were able to make key plays at key times in all phases of the game,” said Patrick Henry head coach Ken Wakefield. The aforementioned drives took up nearly the entire first quarter. Another promising Lee-Davis drive into Patriot territory came to a screeching halt because of penalties and a Patrick Henry sack. On fourth-and-32, a bad snap on a Lee-Davis punt attempt put the ball on the ground. The punter

By Rodney Robinson For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – When Hanover tied visiting Atlee at a touchdown apiece in the first quarter, it looked like the Hawks might be able to run with the Raiders on both teams’ season closer Friday night. But when the Raiders responded with a 70-yard touchdown run by Andrew Stevens on the ensuing kickoff return, any hopes by Hanover fans for an upset were dashed as Atlee ran away with a 55-13 win. The Raiders wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. On their opening drive, quarterback Tyler Warren connected with receiver Alexander Oliver for a 50-yard touchdown pass. Atlee followed Hanover’s scoring drive with Stevens’ kickoff return, a 4-yard touchdown run by Joseph Slade Jr., and a 46-yard pass from Warren to Oliver to extend its lead to 28-7. “I think that’s what we try to be every game is try to be very balanced,” said Atlee head coach Matt Gray. The Raiders were led offensively by three seniors, Oliver, Warren, and Kody Ohl. Oliver tallied 10 receptions for 265 yards and five touchdowns. Bridgewater dashes Yellow Jacket ODAC dreams By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local BRIDGEWATER – The rerun was not as exciting, or satisfying, as the original. Randolph-Macon spent the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference football championship tilt at Bridgewater College both playing from behind and experiencing more than its fair share of deja vu. In the end, again, their hopes for victory rested on a successful onside kick. As opposed to last Saturday’s win over Washington and Lee, there was no miracle, as the Eagles secured both the kick and their first ODAC title since 2005 with a 28-21 victory, ending the Yellow Jackets’ sevengame winning streak and their hopes for back-to-back conference crowns. “Our margin for error is not very big,” noted Yellow Jackets head coach Pedro Arruza, a nod to his team’s penchant for falling behind in games this season. “Our kids played really hard, put a lot into this game. I could have coached better. We could have played better. When you have two good football teams that battle it out, you just can’t get in a hole like that.” That hole was a 21-0 lead built by Bridgewater in a first half filled with frustration for the Yellow Jacket offense. Their opening drive reached the Eagles’ 23, but ended when they failed to convert on fourth-and-2 when quarterback Presley Egbers was tackled for a 2-yard loss. Two plays later, Bridgewater tailback Demetrius Jalepes broke free on a 55-yard run to set up a 7-yard touchdown reception to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. Bridgewater scored on the first play of the second quarter as quarterback Jay Scroggins found Chad Jones for a 22-yard

strike, then added to their lead with 2:38 left before halftime by rushing out an odd formation heavy to the right side of the field and catching the Randolph-Macon defense flat footed. Viante Tucker ran behind then past blockers, untouched for a 34-yard score. With just 110 total yards of

offense in the first half, Arruza called on senior and former starter Burke Estes, to help launch another Yellow Jacket comeback. “I thought we needed a spark,” Arruza said of the decision to change signal callers. “I thought (Egbers) was a little bit rattled, and I felt we needed to

have a veteran in there.” Improved offensive play, and inspired defense, kept Randolph-Macon alive. Scroggins was held to 16 passing yards after halftime. The Eagles earned just 103 yards of total offense. Tre Frederick, who surpassed the 5,000-yard mark in career rushing during
the game with a 112-yard performance, scored on a 3-yard run with 5:28 left in the third quarter to make it 21-7. With 9:39 left, Estes used a pump fake to free tight end Sam Tanner (Lee-Davis), who fought his way into the end zone to cut the margin to eight. But Chris Vidal’s extra point
went wide. It was 21-13. The Yellow Jacket defense was close to brilliant in the second half – close due to one play that inflicted fatal damage to their comeback hopes. Just as Josh Breece had done twice the week before, scoring on running plays of 75 yards up the middle, Jalepes took a handoff on first down of the ensuing Bridgewater possession, and outraced the Yellow Jackets for a 71-yard touchdown run. It was 28-13. To Randolph-Macon’s credit, the Yellow Jackets never quit. Driving 63 yards in 12 plays, on fourth down at the Eagle 12, an Estes pass was intercepted by Chase Rosenthal, but he fumbled on the return. DeAndre Gill recovered at the Bridgewater 32 with 2:41 left. The offense returned, scoring on an Estes 4-yard run with 1:17 left. Estes tossed a quick pass to Tim Hanratty, who, aided by a push from Robby Owens, crossed the goal line for a 2-point conversion for a 28-21 score. It was onside kick time again. But instead of a Yellow Jacket recovery, the ball landed in the arms of an Eagle on the ground at midfield. The comeback try was grounded. There is still much to play for if you’re Randolph-Macon. Saturday, they play “The Game” against archrival HampdenSydney, on Senior Day at Day Field, seeking a sixth-straight win in the series. A secondplace finish in the ODAC could send the Yellow Jackets to the inaugural Neptune Bowl in Virginia Beach against The Apprentice School. Two more wins would give RandolphMacon nine, tying the mark for most wins in a season. “Our kids will bounce back. They always do,” Arruza said. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
Confederates get gutsy to win Region 4B title By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

Lee-Davis defenders charge Warhill’s Camden Lunsford on penalty corner in the Confederates’ sudden-death 3-2 win Thursday.
MECHANICSVILLE – The Lee-Davis field hockey team had to look deep within itself after Warhill took a 2-0 lead in the Region 4B final Thursday night. Time was running out, but the Confederates managed a pair of goals late in the second half to tie the visiting Lions and send the game into overtime. Then, on a corner in the first minute of sudden-death overtime, Brynn Gibson fed the ball to Lilly Lutton, and Lutton did the rest to earn Lee-Davis its first field hockey regional title. “It was chaos as you can imagine,” said Lee-Davis head field hockey coach Merridee Gibson. “It was such a nice ending to what has been a beautiful season. They’re such a tight group of kids.”
The championship game did not start out looking quite so nice. “[Warhill] got one [goal] in the first and one in the second. They were just nice, solid plays that we didn’t handle as well as we could have,” said LeeDavis head field hockey coach Merridee Gibson. “But we had never been down by two this season. We’ve only been down by one at any point, so it was kind of a new thing for [the Confederates]. But they never put their heads down. They just kept going.” Brynn Gibson finished with all three assists. The Confederates’ first goal was by Sydney Owens. The equalizing goal was by Carsyn Poppa. Lee-Davis hosted Warwick in the opening round of the state tournament Monday after this edition went to press.
Maroons sting Yellow Jackets in ODAC tourney quarterfinal By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – Earning its first home game in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship tournament in seven years, Randolph-Macon field hockey was confident entering its quarterfinal against Roanoke on Nov. 5, a team the Yellow Jackets defeated 3-1 in the regular season. But nothing is guaranteed come the postseason, and the battle between the Yellow Jackets and Maroons emphasized defense and became a game of inches. The teams ended regulation tied at 2. Roanoke took advantage of a player advantage late, and on a 2-on-1 fast break, Emilee Wooten sent a
shot into the goal ending the Yellow Jackets’ season at 10-9 with a 3-2 defeat. The game could have been decided in regulation when, on one of the Yellow Jackets’ four penalty corners of the final period, a Katie Brookman shot that blasted past goalkeeper Emma Clark was ruled too high, and disallowed. Maria Teresa AmbrogiTorres scored both goals for the Yellow Jackets: one in the first period, another in the third for a 2-1 lead. But a Lauren Heffron goal for the Maroons with 5:56 left in regulation tied it, setting up the near miss, then, in overtime, heartbreak for RandolphMacon. “We just missed on the post twice. We definitely capitalized
early and had some scoring opportunities,” said RandolphMacon head coach Jess Weiss when explaining overtime strategy. “We thought we had a great game plan to attack the goal on the corner, it’s just unfortunate we couldn’t come up with the rebound.” Clark had 15 saves for Roanoke, while Gatlin Snyder had six for Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets continue to rebuild a program that Weiss took over in 2016, only winning three times that year. Improving from eight wins in 2018 to 10 in 2019, the Yellow Jackets went from traveling to Roanoke a season ago, falling 1-0 in the ODAC quarterfinals, to hosting this year. Despite this year’s heart-

Patrick Henry (15-4) scored 14 of the first 17 points of the match to roll to a 25-9 firstset win. The Patriots used their bench in the next two sets, but the Hawks responded with resilience, leading early before the Patriots took a small lead and held on for a 25-21 set two triumph, then taking the final set 25-20. The Patriots served 13 aces, while Ted Owen had six of Patrick Henry’s 26 kills on the night. The Hawks were led by Conor McFadden, who had a match-high eight kills along with eight digs. “I think playoffs are always a good position to put players in, especially young players,” Townsend said of his decision to go to the bench. “It wasn’t pretty, but they were able to stay focused, keep a lead, and slowly win both.” It also kept starters fresh for the final push, as the Patriots’ ultimate goal is to be on the floor at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center when the Virginia High School League Class 4 boys state championship is decided on Nov. 21. The Patriot girls team, on the court at the same time at Spotsylvania, also came away with a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-16, 27-25) in quarterfinal action, bringing them with a win of Section play, the Lee-Davis Monacan. a berth in their Class 4 state boys advanced to the semifinal Just 12 miles from Patrick tournament.
