A group of Hanover citizens is asking the Hanover County Board of Supervisors to reconsider a recent site plan approval issued by the county’s Planning Department. The supervisors will hear a zoning appeal during today’s 3 p.m. meeting in the Administration Building from a local developer regarding site plans for a new Industrial Park off Route 1. Plans for the Cedar Lane Industrial Park were approved in 2015 and included four possible access points to the project, three located off Cedar Lane and one situated off Route 1. The developer of the adjacent Chickahominy Falls subdivision and affected residents who live along Cedar Lane

Wife continues to plead for kidney donor (Editor’s note: Debbie Nininger, whose husband Scott needs a living kidney donor, continues to plead for a match.) I would like to thank everyone in the community for being so supportive to my family during this difficult time. For those not familiar with our story, I have been desperately trying to find a living kidney donor for my husband Scott Nininger. We have not found a kidney as of yet, but I hope and believe our “miracle” will happen. My family would like to take this time to express how grateful we are for the kind words, continued shares and the many prayers being lifted for us. Everyone has

been so thoughtful and we are very appreciative for the support. I would also like to extend a personal note to Melody Kinser. Thank you so much for allowing me this forum to help my husband. Your kindness and generosity for our family has meant more than I can say. Especially, since we have never even met. You are an incredible person and an exemplary representation of helping our community. To the kidney transplant center, I thank you for all of your help, support and understanding. Finally, to our families, we love you,

thank you and are so blessed to call you ours. Scott, Haley and I would like to wish you all a wonderful holiday filled with your own miracles and all the love of your family and friends. May your New Year be filled with good health and immeasurable happiness. I hope and pray that the next time I am able to reach out it will be with the news that Scott has had a successful kidney transplant and he is on the way to a healthy future. Fingers and toes crossed. Happy Holidays to all and thank you again. -- Debbie Nininger

Turner Hart is shown with two largemouth bass as he plans a future as a competitor in major fishing tournaments. He is shown at Lake Anna, one of his favorite fishing spots.

PLUMBING, HEATING & COOLING

Patrick Henry High junior casting for success fishing By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local eeping up with Patrick Henry High School junior Turner Hart isn’t easy. If you can’t catch him on the soccer field, he might be in the library studying or out in the woods on a hunt. Or, he might be shooting hoops. But, more than likely, your best bet to locate Turner would involve water, a bass boat, and an ample supply of largemouth bass. During Turner’s formative years, it appeared certain that soccer would be the center of his athletic interests. Away from his time on the pitch, Turner began fishing, at first two or three times a month. In 2015, Turner’s two passions required a decision. Realizing the time required to participate and compete on the Richmond Kickers Elite Travel Soccer Team, the energetic teenager decided to pursue his true love, fishing. “It was a tough decision to quit playing travel soccer, but I wanted to further pursue my passion for fishing,” Turner said last week. “Doing this allowed me to put a lot more time and effort into fishing and has made me a much better angler.” It was the right choice.

“I knew I made the right decision when I started being able to compete with highlyskilled anglers and I am one of the youngest kids operating a boat and fishing tournaments,” Turner said regarding the decision. He began fishing for largemouth bass at Lake Anna, often accompanied by his good buddy and fishing friend John Doyle. What began as a once or twice a month outing increased and Turner began taking part in Lake Anna fishing tournaments in 2016, becoming one of the youngest competitors on the lake. But, the passion for catching fish began much earlier in this life. “I got into fishing when I was 11 years old. The thing that got me hooked was when my friend Dalton came over to my house and we were fishing my pond. He was slaying the bass with a Zoom swimming fluke and I told him to give me one,” he said. The initial cast did not yield results, but fired an interest that intensified quickly. “I threw it out there and a 5-pounder grabbed it, jumped up in the air, and shook his head, and spit the bait. From the managing editor

’Tis the season to bring back kindness By Melody Kinser Managing Editor wasn’t always a nice person. It’s easy to get caught up in the hype, especially when you’re younger. With age and religion (the most important part), a sense of others’ feelings has become pronounced. Reading posts on social media or watching people in traffic can be disheartening. What has happened to common courtesy? Behaviors are reminiscent of elementary school playground disagreements. Admittedly, despite my age (yes, I am old enough to have membership in AARP), when it comes to the holiday season, especially Christmas, I am a kid at heart. I love the sights, the sounds, and, most of all,

I

the reason we celebrate Christmas. With two great-nephews in Midlothian, Christmas has become even more special by seeing the excitement through the eyes of a 7- and a 3-year-old. But, as usual, I digress. Kindness seems to have taken a back seat in society. I’m not going to get into politics and why this may be the case. Rather, I think it’s a matter of each of us taking the time for a little self-examination. My father’s sudden death in 1992 was a real eye-opener for me. That’s when I knew I had to make some personal changes to become a better person. Those changes included the treatment of others. This is a lesson we are never too old to learn and make part of our daily routine. Simple gestures can mean so much. Do you

acknowledge those who stop and let you into traffic? I tend to offer a backward wave of thanks. Do you thank the person who holds a door open for you when you enter a business? Are you thinking about families who may not be as fortunate as Christmas approaches? You still have time to support the Christmas Mother program. God bless the Doswell Ruritan Club for continuing this tradition. For those of us who have never had to worry about a Christmas dinner or gifts under the tree, we can do more for those in need. Be generous. Be thankful. Be kind. Let’s make Christmas 2019 memorable in many ways. Most of all, let’s take the time to make it about others. As a new decade nears, kindness can be the word for 2020. Let’s live it.

Can one person really make that much of a difference? By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It all seems so overwhelming at times, and, in a society filled with challenges, the idea of one person making a difference appears, at best, remote. And, at this time of the year, the needs of less fortunate people become more visible, and a joyous season reminds all of the plight of many of our fellow Americans.

Giving has become part of our holiday tradition, and many groups highlight efforts to assist the underprivileged and provide cheer during a season that would otherwise be joyless. The efforts come in all shapes and sizes, just like the people they serve. There are coat and shoe drives, blanket collections, gifts for children donation programs and food collection, just to name a few.

For decades, Christmas Mother programs though out the region have provided countless smiles and hope for families who could not afford those extra gifts for their children, or that turkey in the oven. Their efforts are in full speed mode as Christmas approaches, and giving to one of these programs means your help will stay in the community and help folks who are your neighbors.

These group efforts are a sure sign that goodness and compassion still are important to a society that sometimes moves too fast to notice the ones who are being left behind. But, what about that one person and what difference can they can make? I have been fortunate to witness the efforts of one of these heroes who spends countless hours, money see PERSON, pg. 13

Gerrymandering issue puts GOP on the other side I read with great amusement the quote from Nick Collette, chairman of the Hanover County Republican Committee: “As for redistricting, it will be very interesting to see if the Democrats put their money where their mouth is on this issue.” Translation: We knew it was wrong when we were gerrymandering, but we lacked the moral courage to stand up to our own party and do the right thing. So, now we have to point fingers at the other side in hopes of demonizing them for the thing that we have been doing. Frankly, I hope the Democrats do to the Republicans as they have previously done -- specifically around redistricting. Until the remaining Republicans are willing to support a state constitutional amendment to end gerrymandering for good, they deserve everything that they get. Rebecca Huber Mechanicsville

Open talk needed to address transgender issue I am writing in response to the article titled “Transgender students in schools talks continue”, published in your newspaper on Nov. 19. I believe that it is very important to address and openly talk about the concerns that transgenders face during the school day. Since our generation is the one that is going to bring change to our society, it is important to openly talk about these issues now so that in the future it will not only be easier to talk see LETTERS, pg. 8

about but more normalized in society. As of right now, many transgender youths may feel like they are going through this alone, which could be why more transgender youths end up transferring out of public school. Since a person who is transgender identifies with the opposite gender that they were given at birth, they should be able to use the bathrooms in which they identify because everyone else who identifies as that gender uses those bathrooms so why can’t they use them as well. Before coming out at transgender, the person may feel a sense of alienation not only from themselves but also within the community in which they have been told that they were a part of since birth. So, once they do come out as being transgender, they shouldn’t have to feel the same sense of alienation and isolation

that they may have felt before. As a society, we should create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone no matter what gender they identify with, and once we do that then maybe transgender people in the future won’t have to go through the same hardships as transgender people do now in our society. Cedar Lane project seen as negative I am a resident of Cedarlea Park Subdivision where my husband and I have lived and raised a family since 2004. The main reason I bought a home here is because of the picturesque country-like setting of our subdivision so unique to Hanover County. I fear that the Cedar Lane Industrial Park project is going to negatively alter our way of life, our commute and even

the pleasant feel of our subdivision if it is constructed as currently proposed – with only one egress/ingress to it from Cedar Lane. Many Hanover residents will be harmed if the developer continues with plans to have only one entrance and exit on Cedar Lane. As a licensed professional engineer, I support, and frankly make a living off, economic development. I therefore appreciate Hanover County working hard to bring in future employment opportunities to our county. However, I also believe that proposed large industrial developments should be constructed such that any negative impact to surrounding communities would be minimized especially if that can be accomplished with minimal effort and funding. In this case, not utilizing Route 1, a large industrial road fronting a major portion of the proposed industrial site, makes little sense. see LETTERS, pg. 13

and effort helping less fortunate individuals. He’s an old friend and colleague who now has dedicated his life to assisting homeless and underprivileged people in his neighborhood. You can regularly catch him at the local McDonald’s purchasing breakfast and hot beverages for people residing on the street. He visits lines of people waiting for shelters to open and hands out clothing items or toiletries. His efforts have become wellknown to those who know him and his goodness. His efforts are pure and from the heart, and he seeks no attention of recognition for his efforts. Knowing this man’s history, a long and frustrating struggle with drugs, I understand his insight and willingness to delve into a problem that, to most of us, seems overwhelming and unsolvable. After dedicating his life to his faith, he was freed from his bonds of addiction and made a

commitment to help those who need a hand-up. He knows firsthand that one act of kindness can transform a life, and it’s never too late to change a life for the better. His work is not as glitzy as a mall Christmas tree or as visible as a bell ringer, but the rewards of his tenacity and dedication yield no less important results. I write this story without naming this individual for several reasons. Primarily, it’s his message and work that are important, not his name. And, secondly, I know he doesn't seek publicity or public validation of his efforts. His small network of friends contribute clothes and food to ensure the work reaches more and more people, and he continues to spend his hours before and after work, doing what he considers the Lord’s work, visiting with and contributing to his fellow humans with acts of kindness and generosity. It’s a message that is especially poignant at this time of the year, but, as displayed by his efforts, is important 365 days a year. So, that’s what one person can do.

What is more appropriate? Using an existing industrial road off of which to construct an industrial entrance or destroying the nature of a sleepy country road because the developer wants to save a few bucks? The project currently underway does not match the plans approved by the county, which included room for multiple entrances and exits to the site (at least one off of Route 1). If it was carried out according to that design, this project would have multiple access points to accommodate the hundreds of tractor-trailers that will be going to and from the industrial park. Now, all of that traffic is somehow expected to flow through Cedar Lane alone? This is very disturbing to the residents of Cedarlea Park Subdivision and those that live off our Cedar Lane. It seems the developer is unfamiliar with our beautiful county, as Cedar Lane is a far cry from the type of roadway needed to accommodate heavy duty trucks at all hours of the day. The current plan is going to completely devastate this small residential road, force residents into ridiculous traffic congestion, and impair the safety

of those living nearby. Surely there are more practical places to put entrances and exits to this site, such as Route 1. Hanover residents shouldn’t have to sacrifice their peace and well-being for the sake of economic development. I hope county officials will impose requirements on this project to restore that balance. Anna M. Kotas, P.E. Glen Allen

Confederate can still mean oppression In reading the letters from a recent edition of The Mechanicsville Local, Peggy Lassiter stated, “I have attended football games at Lee-Davis High School, and I noted African American cheerleaders, football players, and dancers as well. They all looked Happy.” This sounds like the slave narrative that was often published in books that taught our children what the Master wanted reported: that the slaves were happy. Because we do not want to be called Confederates doesn’t mean we walk around with no smiles on our faces or

our heads hung low. We have a greater joy on the inside that gives us peace that passes all understanding. Our children enjoy participating in these programs as well as other children. Smiles of participation do not equate to being happy to be called Confederates. We cannot have in-depth conversations about race or other significant issues at a football game. Nor can an adequate discussion of a school name change take place at a football game. We should expect a nonchalant response at a football game. First, they are there in support of a friend or relative whom they prefer watching than discussing indepth topics. Second, “befriending”, as was indicated, does not mean I will tell you all of my truth because we see each other at a football game occasionally. Many songs speak of the smile on the outside that hides the pain on the inside. That is what you see, our politeness. This issue does hurt our children’s sense of confidence, their sense of being treated equitably. They know the history of the Confederacy and what it stood, and still stands for, and for them, for us, it is the continuation of a history of oppression. Issue of the paper, the lawsuit is not tearing up our county; the continuing effort to preserve the confederacy is tearing up our county. I’d like this reader to know that in 2018 a proposal from Together Hanover and The Alumni coalition offered to raise the funds needed to pay for the name change. If funds were the concern of the Hanover County School Board, we would think they would have accepted this offer. This was before the lawsuit and is not a part of anything regarding the NAACP.

The intent to blame the NAACP for costing the county is repugnant to say the least. As indicated above, when a solution has been offered that would not cost the county one penny, how can you place the blame for this on the NAACP? Mr. Sanders stated, and I quote, “When I heard the announcer at the recent Hanover/Lee-Davis football game say something like, ‘That’s another touchdown for the Confederates, I cringed a bit’.” Mr. Sanders is not of African Descent and he felt this way for the students. How does he think the black students felt who have to hear this

day in and day out? Thank you, Mr. Sanders, for acknowledging and proving our point. Despite his cringing, Mr. Sanders is still willing to put our students through this for another 15 or so years while Hanover finds land, and then builds a new school. This request for change began in the 1970s. It is now 2019, almost 50 years later and you are requesting that we sit and wait another 15 years. We’ve endured 50 years of hurt, pain and condemnation already. Fifty years of students not wanting yearbooks, not wanting to wear band uniforms

and football jerseys, class rings with Confederates on them -50 years of not truly feeling that they are a complete part of their school. How much more must our children suffer to please those who call it heritage? Why not do with the study of your heritage, what we are made to do, relegate the study and sharing of information about your heritage to one month a year? Mr. Sanders, you cringed, but you aren’t the one who has had to comfort them in their tears, in their times of hurt, or when they haven’t tried out for a sport because they didn’t want to wear that uniform.

Have you seen them on the sidelines with their heads down when the yells of “Go Confederates!” are chanted? Your child never had to face this, mine did. If you cringed, stop for one moment and imagine the continued hurt you want to impose on our children for another 15 years at a minimum. If you can accept, as you say, that the name will change eventually, then what is the issue with changing it now? Why not advise the county to not lose additional funds that our children can use for education, why not stop the hurt you noticed in our chil-

dren, why not advise them to stop this now? The NAACP seeks and stands for equity and equality for all people. At our last meeting there were as many Caucasian members as African American members present. The school board has received an offer to fund the cost of a name change. Many people want to accuse the NAACP of costing the county money. That is a false narrative. If the school board continues with the lawsuit, which they have the authority to stop at any point in time, they are the ones costing the county money. They have an option. Pat Jordan Mechanicsville

The tentative “make-up” date is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Every effort will be made to get to any areas that were missed. Santa and his Elves must move swiftly so they get to see all the good boys and girls, so understand their haste. Station 7 has served the Mechanicsville community 24/7 since 1945.

ect that includes a multi-story warehouse facility. A traffic study that accompanied the plans approved the single entrance, noting the increased traffic would not change the rating currently assigned to the two-lane road, and Cedar Lane could accommodate increased traffic related to the project. In October, the Planning Department approved a site plan that included the Cedar Lane entrance only, clearing the way for Scannell to begin construction at the site. Residents along Cedar Lane responded by forming the community group to appeal the Planning Department’s decision to approve the site plan with one entrance. The Cedar Lane Coalition is a community group comprised of homeowners in Chickahominy Falls and other neighborhoods located along Cedar Lane. They contend that Cedar Lane was never intended as a major thoroughfare with more than 400 trucks a day travelling along its narrow lanes. The group placed a tractortrailer at the intersection of Cedar Lane and Route 1 clearly displaying their sentiments: “400 Big Trucks a Day do not belong on Cedar Lane.” Planning Director David Maloney is defending his decision to approve the site plan, and recommending that the appeal be denied. He also noted the 400 truck a day figure is “overstated”. Maloney said 80 percent of the 1,000 trips daily identified in the traffic analysis was attributed to employees at the new facility, and estimated the center would garner about 100-plus truck trips a day. Acknowledging there were four entrances on the original plans, Maloney noted that Scannell chose to utilize only one in the first phase of construction. “I think there’s a misunderstanding that the plan requires all four entrances to be built, and

it clearly doesn’t,” Maloney said. The appeal was filed by Chickahominy Falls developer Roger Glover, and other neighborhoods filed similar claims that were dismissed because the residents were not close enough to the project to be considered or meeting the “aggrieved” requirements. The Cedar Lea subdivision was one of those neighborhoods that filed an appeal that was denied because they didn’t satisfy statute requirements defining aggrieved parties. “We were told we were not an aggrieved party,” said Cedar Lea Park resident Steve Busic. “We were shocked because that was like saying your concerns don’t matter. We have 300 families in Cedar Lea that think otherwise.” The site was rezoned in 2015 under a board-approved initiative called the Strategic Zoning Initiative, an economic development effort that allows landowners to market large tracts for industrial development, in turn, providing more available commercial property in the county’s inventory. But some members of the coalition claim that program “fast-tracked” the approval process and resulted in major

decisions being reached at administrative levels without public input. Chickahominy Falls resident Bob Mahone said the increase in truck traffic would create a nightmare for neighboring residences. “I moved here from Henrico County and downsized to come to a rural, quiet place. I love the farm atmosphere that the community is developed around, and, then, to find out two weeks ago that we’ve got this big baby sitting there looking at us,” he added. Some coalition members said they did not object to the Industrial Park, but were upset at the lack of public input regarding the planning process. “We are really

The Best Care for

not opposed to the project; we are opposed to the entrance,” Mahone said. “Dumping the trucks right onto Cedar Lane in front of us is something we can’t live with.” Some Cedar Lane Coalition members suspected opting for the Cedar Lane entrance was a cost-cutting measure. An entrance on Route 1 would be more expensive and could possibly involve a signal light and expanded turn lanes. Maloney said his department concluded the Cedar Lane entrance provided a safer traffic situation compared to a Route 1 entrance. “Staff’s position is that it is going to be safer for trucks to enter the property by exiting Route 1 at a signalized intersec-

tion rather than just a commercial driveway off Route 1 that has no signal, which means trucks turning in and out crossing two lanes or traffic, again with no signal,” Maloney said. “We think that having trucks enter the property on Cedar Lane through a signalcontrolled intersection and then enter right into the property is going to be a lot safer.” A major improvement project at the Cedar LaneRoute 1 intersection was completed earlier this year. Even with the improved intersection, another Chickahominy Falls resident said further study is needed regarding traffic increases and other possible impacts of the project. “There are other impacts they could have as well — noise and environmental impact. There’s also a lot of concern that that volume of diesel trucks could begin shaking the ground and messing with foundations and everything else; so, to just rubber-stamp this thing through on Wednesday seems like a real premature move,” Rick Albee said. Crews began clearing land at the site late last week and are beginning work on a construction entrance off Cedar Lane.

Maloney said Scannell has every right to begin construction since all documentation is in place, but admitted board action could alter that status. Glover said attempts to explore options with the developer did not yield results, including the purchase of land to provide an alternate entrance. A number of supervisors have visited the site and met with concerned residents, according to coalition members. Henry District supervisor Sean Davis said he has some questions regarding the method in which the property was zoned. “I had some concerns when we started the Strategic Zoning initiative and possible unintended consequences, and, lo and behold, here we are,” Davis said. He said the Route 1 entrance seems like a better option. “You can’t have that many trucks going up and coming in on Cedar Lane. I stand with these folks.” Davis said he still is in favor of the Industrial Park at the site with some adjustments. In addition to a number of supervisors, Glover also met with Scannell Properties in see CEDAR, pg. 22

He is hoping for positive results when the board meets today, voicing a hope that the panel will listen to the residents and reconsider the site plan. “We’re hoping that the board sees the situation here and understands the staff misinterpreted the proffers (relating to traffic study) ... and that Scannell must resubmit a plan with a TIA that is consistent with the proffers,” Glover said. Patriots go for win, fall in state semifinal By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch NORFOLK — When the final play had ended, with Patrick Henry’s Jordan Allen getting slammed on his back at the 5-yard line, the Lake Taylor players streamed toward their sideline in celebration, leaving the Patrick Henry boys frozen at the site of the play, slowly processing what had just happened. One sat motionless on the goal line. Another squatted with his head facing the earth. And Allen remained seated on the ground until he was offered a hand by a teammate and pried off the grass. Patrick Henry had orchestrated a dramatic comeback, scoring two touchdowns in the final 4:26 of the game and cutting Lake Taylor’s lead to 1 point. It scored a touchdown with 5 seconds left and opted to go for 2 and the win. But the attempt failed, leaving Lake Taylor a 36-35 victory in the Virginia High School League Class 4 state semifinals on Saturday. Lake Taylor (12-2) advanced to the state championship game against Tuscarora, while Patrick Henry (10-4) was forced to settle for its best season since 2001. The Patrick Henry players took a knee moments later, formed a semicircle around their first-year coach, Ken Wakefield, and looked upward

to him. He had nothing but words of encouragement to offer as solace. “We came up short,” he told them. “It happens like that sometimes.” The seniors, he said, left the program in an enviable posi-

tion. They improved on their 3-6 season in 2018 by seven wins. Senior quarterback Alex Sikkar became the team’s heartbeat, rushing for 160 yards and three touchdowns Saturday and throwing for 74 yards and another touchdown. He also

caught a pass and intercepted one. The underclassmen are in position to inherit a team on the rise. Sophomore Jordan Allen entered the game at quarterback in the final drive, splitting Sikkar out to receiver. It

was an off-the-wall strategy that worked last week against Dinwiddie, and Wakefield decided to use it again. An Antonio Ford interception had given Patrick Henry the ball at its 47-yard line with 2:16 to play. But the Patriots

faced fourth-and-19 with 44 seconds left. Allen completed a 21-yard pass to Sikkar, putting them at the 5-yard line. Allen ran for 3 yards then spiked the ball on the next play with 9 seconds to go. With 5 seconds left in the game, he scored a 2-yard touchdown, reaching the ball over the goal line. Wakefield opted to go for 2. Allen ran again, looking for a hole between his right guard and tackle, but was pinned by Lake Taylor’s Malik Newton and Camauri Hunter, who seized him at the 2-yard line and pushed him back to the 5. “I had to blow him up,” Newton said. “I just hit him…It was crazy, but I’m glad we came out on top.” Ultimately, Patrick Henry couldn’t overcome its mistakes. It fumbled three times in the third quarter, including a 24-yard loss on a fumbled snap that Lake Taylor recovered at the 1-yard line and scored on one play later. And it committed costly penalties in the fourth that allowed Lake Taylor to drive 80 yards and take a two-touchdown lead. The Patriots found most of their success in their heavy formation, which includes two tight ends and two fullbacks. Often, they’d dispatch a mass of blockers in one direction, and Sikkar would follow them. It see PATRIOTS, pg. 26

King William sweeps Lee-Davis in basketball By Rob Witham and Rodney Robinson For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – The only holdovers on the basketball court Friday night for LeeDavis boys basketball were the uniforms. Under new head coach Gene Foley, guiding a team with almost no varsity basketball experience thanks to a deep graduating class and the loss of lone returning starter Eli Jones for the season due to injury, the Confederates are starting from scratch after their best season in a quarter-century. With a 2-point win at Maggie Walker under their belt, Lee-Davis welcomed King William, who, too, has a new head coach in Bill Lomax, who once patrolled the sideline at Henrico High School. The Cavaliers traveled well, as King William fans nearly outnumbered Lee-Davis fans in a battle for Route 360 supremacy. It was physical, fast, playground-style basketball from start to finish, a test of wills and a battle of egos for two teams looking to prove themselves. A late push from the Cavaliers gave the visitors a 79-74 victory to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Both coaches have offensive sets they instill in their players. But neither team had the patience to stay in those sets, succumbing to defensive pressure which created a matchup where one-on-one was emphasized by players more than fiveon-five, much to the chagrin of their coaches. “Our offense is just breaking down sometimes. We haven’t been able to execute,” Lomax explained. “We played good offense in the first quarter. Then, when we have a little success, it goes to our heads.”

ruled the day. The Cavaliers forced a Lee-Davis turnover, David Lipscomb scoring a lay-up for the critical twopossession lead at 76-72. After another Lee-Davis turnover, King William smartly brought the ball out to chew clock, draw fouls and finish the job. Keandre Roane scored 21 points for the Cavaliers, while Anderson added 17. For Lee-Davis, junior Kwadell McQueen, a promising young player, scored 17 points, while Wyatt Brown added 13, and Eli Lewis and Bain Marsh each had 10. For both teams, the game’s atmosphere and pace were good tests. The gymnasium had a February feel, and both Lomax and Foley hope their teams will be peaking when the pressure of the calendar matches the intensity felt Friday night. “We need to play smarter and execute better on offense. Randolph-Macon men off to strong start By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – The early returns from the 2019-20 men’s basketball season at RandolphMacon are very promising. Losing four impactful seniors from a team that reached the round of 16 in last season’s NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament, Randolph-Macon has collected a few new pieces, and floored the accelerator. Known for defense and the long-range jumper, the Yellow Jackets turned the tables on Bridgewater Wednesday night, dominating the paint, scoring 70 points inside in a 97-55 blowout over the Eagles to improve to 3-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, 8-0 overall. Randolph-Macon is ranked ninth in the latest D3Hoops.com Top 25. “We’ll never see that again,” Yellow Jackets head coach Josh Merkel wryly noted, surprised at the statistic revealing the 70 points scored down low. “I was proud that we played two halves. There’s been a couple of games where we’ve played a good first half but not necessarily extending it into the second half.” That wasn’t an issue against the Eagles. Buzz Anthony,

mounted a run of its own, outscoring the Confederates 18-7 in the quarter. King William closed the third quarter with a 44-21 advantage and held the lead in the fourth as the Cavaliers won 51-38. “Our goal is to make sure the other team had more turnovers than we have and tonight

Freshmen Miles Mallory and Josh Talbert added to the effort, Talbert strong to the glass for a basket to give Randolph-Macon a 16-7 lead less than seven minutes into the game. Moments later, Talbert attacked, then kicked out to Ian Robertson for a 3-pointer. It was 25-12 Yellow Jackets at 9:47 left in the first half when the Eagles called timeout to catch their breath. On the other end, RandolphMacon cleaned up on the glass, grabbing 17 of the game’s first 24 rebounds. A 12-0 run out of the Bridgewater timeout put the lead at 25 at 37-12, and the Eagles never threatened again. The Yellow Jackets shot 58 percent (21-of-36) from the floor in the first half, then, much to Merkel’s satisfaction, shot 70 percent (21-of-30) in the second stanza. Talbert made all nine of his field goal attempts, leading RandolphMacon with 22 points. David Funderburg, who made 7-of8 shots in 17 minutes of play, added 16 points while Mallory had 14 and Robertson nine. Was it a perfect game? No. The Yellow Jackets made just see STRONG, pg. 26

it worked out better for us,” said King William head coach Kerry Johnson. The Cavaliers were led offensively by junior guard Kristen Dungee. Dungee had a gamehigh 15 points, and anchored King William on defense. As Johnson had hoped, the key to the Cavalier defense Friday night was its ability to create turnovers. to force seven turnovers while only committing three. Johnson pointed out that pressure is one of the major keys to their defense. The fullcourt pressure and zone defense caused havoc for Lee Davis Friday night. “Our defense is coming along, because we know we like to press so we have to be in better shape than other team,” Johnson said. “We work real hard.”

Lee Davis was led offensively by junior Ali Sickinger and sophomore Madison Butler. Sickinger had 10 points in the matchup, with the bulk of her points coming in the second half. Butler had 10 points as well, as she was the catalyst for Lee Davis during its early run in the third quarter. Lee Davis was able to draw a lot of fouls in the matchup, leading to 14 free throw attempts. They converted nine.

The loss on Friday night marks the second straight to start the season for Lee Davis. Maggie Walker squeaked out a 2-point victory against them on Tuesday. Head coach Alvin Puller plans to keep working with his team, to correct mistakes and keep improving. “We got to focus, play as a team and not play as individuals,” said head coach Alvin Puller. to start the season. The Cavaliers will take on Middlesex High School next as they look to add to their current win streak. “We kind of have an idea of what we’re looking at when we go to see them,” Johnson said. “We’ll take it day by day, so we’ll talk about the game tomorrow and have a good practice and we’ll get ready for Middlesex.” Rob Witham and Rodney Robinson can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

Yellow Jacket women struggle at start of season By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – It’s the feeling you get when you know you have all the pieces of the puzzle, but, for some reason, you simply aren’t able to place them together. With an All-American coming off a devastating knee injury, Randolph-Macon women’s basketball was ready to use the experience gained by others last season, along with newcomer contributions, to again make a run at a big season. Now, heading into their exams and holiday break, the Yellow Jackets are 2-6, when they easily have been 5-3. Their last three defeats have been by a combined 14 points, including a buzzer beater and heartbreak in overtime. Thursday night at Crenshaw Gymnasium against non-conference rival Mary Washington, however, it was a simple matter of frigid shooting, the Yellow Jackets making just 14-of-58 shots from the floor in a 55-50 loss to the Eagles. “We’re really inconsistent, and I have no excuses for that whatsoever,” Randolph-Macon head coach Carroll LaHaye said when asked about her team’s offensive rhythm and chemistry. “We had less consistency, less flow tonight.”

Yellow Jackets’ best stretch of offense would come early in the third period as they took a 28-27 lead with 5:02 left in the quarter on a Williams put-back, capping a 6-0 Yellow Jacket run. Mary Washington, however, was the team who hit the big shot at the right time on several occasions in this contest, stringing several together to finish the third on a 14-4 run to take a 41-32 lead. Becca Arrington, who scored 11 points, hit a key 3-pointer with 6:13 left to finish a 7-0 Randolph-Macon run, cutting the deficit to 2 points. It stayed close until late when, after the Yellow Jackets failed to take the lead with possession down 48-47, the Eagles knocked down a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to up their margin to 4 with 1:06 to go. It was Mary Washington’s first points in more than two and a half minutes. The frustration continued Saturday in Newport News as Randolph-Macon came back in Dave Lawrence/The Local the second half to force overRandolph-Macon’s Kelly Williams (50) goes up for a basket in the Yellow Jackets’ 55-50 loss to time with Christopher Newport visiting Mary Washington Thursday. Williams finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. before falling 95-87. Williams It didn’t help when Kelly Vegas one year ago robbed her Yellow Jackets’ 12 points in the scored 16 points and grabbed second period came from the 16 rebounds, while Arrington Williams picks up two fouls of much of her junior season. It was up to the Yellow charity stripe as each cut whit- and Michal Ross, inserted into within the game’s first four minutes. Williams continues to Jackets to find other ways to tled away at the Eagles’ lead, search for the game she knows keep Mary Washington within heading to the locker room she has within, the game that led sight, and they did by attack- down just 23-19. Williams would play the her to national acclaim before ing the basket and getting to Continued from pg. 23 her injury during a game in Las the free throw line. Eight of the entire second half, and the

the starting lineup for this game, each scored 18 to lead the Yellow Jackets. Arrington fouled out before overtime, and Christopher Newport’s Natalie Terwilliger hit a pair of 3-pointers late in the extra session to seal the victory. The Yellow Jackets will have a long time to think about these disappointments, as they won’t return to action until Thursday Jan. 2 when Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Lynchburg comes to Crenshaw Gymnasium. Until then, the players will work to find the rhythm, the flow, that will finally put the pieces of the puzzle correctly together. LaHaye has seen this happen before. In 2009, her team sat at 4-4, a season removed from a 22-5 campaign. After a 1-point loss to Washington and Lee early in January, the Yellow Jackets won 19 of their next 20 games, including 11 in a row, and won the ODAC championship. The question is, can history repeat itself? Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

Our generous community came to the ‘tree’ last year to help us surpass our goal, yet again. With your continued support, we can continue to bring the warmth of a smile to the homes of many more this year.” Shelton and the staff of L & M Carpet agree that they “would love to continue to donate more and that we are very thankful for our communities support.” He pointed out that those who donate a toy will receive a special gift as a token of L & M’s appreciation. Hanover County High School Team, a group that captured a top five finish in the 2019 High School Final State championship that included the 30 best high school boats in Virginia. Hart said he’s geographically positioned to gain experience in several different genres of bass fishing. “The one advantage about bass fishing in Virginia is the numerous different types of fisheries, whether that’s tidal fisheries such as the James River and the Potomac River. Tidal fisheries are much different than most because you have to take into account tides and be able to fish current,” he said. Fishing in those rivers is different from a session in Lake Anna. “You have lakes such as Lake Anna and Smith Mountain Lake. You also have Buggs Island, which is a stormwater lake where the water rises and drops frequently. The reason this is an advantage is it teaches me to become a versatile angler and to be able to catch fish in many different water conditions,” Hart said. Although Turner deferred on the travel soccer opportunity, he continued his prowess on the field on the Patrick Henry Varsity squad where he was named Offensive Player of the Year as

a sophomore. He’ll return to pitch this spring for his junior year on the PHS squad. Hart is hoping his future involves professional fishing, but the honor roll student has a back-up plan. “My goal for fishing is to be able to pursue it full-time,” Hart said. “My dream is to fish the FLW or the Bassmaster Elite Series. I want to compete with the best of the best and establish myself in the fishing industry. My dream is to win the Bassmaster Classic -- and I know if I complete in this I made it.” And if the fishing doesn’t work out: “My favorite subject in school is math. I have always been talented in math and would like to become an engineer as a back-up plan.” Whether it’s soccer, fishing or academics, Hart plans to be in the mix. “I love playing sports because of the competition that’s why I fell in love with bass fishing. I also love to hunt because it’s so peaceful being out in nature.” There’s no doubt Hart is making a name for himself in the bass fishing world, but the future pro angling hopeful is quick to thank the people who made his journey possible, including his number one fan. “I am thankful for my parents supporting my passion and doing whatever it takes to make sure I have the tools to succeed.”
