MECHANICSVILLE – From a hotly-contested 97th District House of Delegates seat to gun rights to changing the Confederate names of two Hanover County schools, the news of 2019 was filled with members of the community expressing themselves in the polls and in government meetings. The 97th District race and the Nov. 4 election take the top spot in our list of Top 10 stories for 2019. Supervisors, Constitutional officers take Oath of Office By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER -- Retiring South Anna Supervisor Wayne Hazzard sat in the back of the room and watched patiently as his former colleagues and newlyelected representatives took their oaths of office last Wednesday at the historic Hanover County Courthouse. Hazzard is wrapping up two terms on the panel, and said leaving a post he loves won’t be easy. “I have mixed emotions,” Hazzard said. “All of these folks have become
like family to me and I will miss all of them.” He admitted his tenure on the board had become a familiar routine after decades of service, and the South Anna rep said he wasn’t sure what his first days of life as a private citizen might entail. “I’m worried about waking up on Jan. 1 and wondering what do I do now,” he joked.
