Cancelled had little meaning for about 500 97th delegates By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local
Jim Ridolphi for The Local
A sea of Scott Wyatt signs filled Atlee High School on Saturday for a convention as the controversy continues between the Cold Harbor District supervisor and incumbent Del. Chris Peace for the 97th District Republican nomination.
MECHANICSVILLE — If Saturday’s 97th District Convention was officially cancelled, almost 500 delegates who filed into Atlee High School that morning did not get the memo. Ignoring a statement by Republican Party chairman Jack Wilson announcing the convention was cancelled and a nominee would be chosen by canvass on June 1, Scott Wyatt (shown below speaking) delegates said the convention was still the legitimate method to select a candidate. see 97TH, pg. 4

(Editor’s note: The following was submitted by George Navas, historian of American Legion Post 175, located at 8700 Bell Creek Rd. in Mechanicsville.) MECHANICSVILLE -- At the conclusion of World War II, seeing an expanded need to locally serve military service members, veterans and their families, 16 veterans joined together on 27 September 1945 to create the American Legion Post 175 in Mechanicsville. They were granted a permanent charter by the national organization in April 1946. The Post axiom: “An organization succeeds, not because it is big, or because it is long established, but because there are people in it who live it, sleep it, dream it, and build for the future.” Since the beginning of Post 175, the need for services by veterans, their families and extended network has not abated. The rate of conflicts worldwide has increased, requiring continued outreach to veteran communities and to leaders that impact services to them. Because of this continuing need, Post 175 membership has grown to over 300. Their programs continue to benefit current and former service members, their families, and the greater local community. The Post in Mechanicsville also hosts affiliated organizations, such as: the American Legion Auxiliary; the Sons of the American Legion; and the American Legion Riders. They honor the past by participating in events at Hanover County Veterans Memorial Park; Veteran Honor Flights; Wreaths Across America at Seven Pines National Cemetery; community events, parades, festivals, and representation at other venues of interest to
veterans. Today, they serve veterans’ interest with others through the Hanover County Veterans Committee; the Virginia Veterans Services Foundation, the Hanover Health and Rehabilitation Center; Heritage Green Assisted Living, Autumn Care of Mechanicsville, The Crossings of Hanover, Covenant Woods, the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Hospital (Richmond) and many churches. Selected Hanover County First Responders are recognized, blood drives are conducted, monthly Community Breakfasts are hosted; and assistance is provided for veteran participation in the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project Initiative. They promote the well-being, physical and intellectual development of children of Legion members, and our next generation of citizens/ leaders by sponsoring an American Legion baseball (championship) team; selecting and supporting candidates for the American Legion Boys and Girls State Youth Leadership Training Programs; hosting and evaluating American Legion Oratorical contests for college scholarships; sponsoring four Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp (JROTC) Units, Scouts BSA (Boy Scouts of America) Troop 553; as well as promoting Americanism with programs at Pole Green Elementary and Oak Knoll Middle School to date. The American Legion Post 175 is looking forward to 70-plus more years promoting the interests of America’s service members, veterans, their families and extended assistance network. For more information on Post 175’s programs, visit members from 9 to 11 a.m. any Tuesday or visit the website at: http://www. post175.org.

Garners make new Zaxby’s a true family affair in county By Melody Kinser Managing Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Jon Garner remembers the first time he ate at a Zaxby’s – and that is when he knew the restaurant known for its chicken would be in his future. He was a student at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia, when a friend said, “Let’s go to Zaxby’s for lunch; I didn’t know what it was. We went and I had a grilled chicken sandwich with some Zaxby’s sauce and toast. That was when he decided “I want one of these one day. It was, however, a long journey for Jon to reach his goal. For over six years, he worked in the software business for the company Cvent.

T
o say her youngest daughter posed challenges in parenting is an understatement. She was carefree and lived life to the fullest, with the exception of taking education and planning for the future very seriously. The eldest daughter was the epitome of the perfect child: a straight A student and an officer or member of all the right clubs and organizations. She had a love of music that prompted her to take piano lessons. Daughter #2 had been registered to study the guitar and learn to twirl the baton. She didn’t do either, preferring to hang out with the kids in the neighborhood. Who was thinking past that particular day? You’re correct-- she wasn’t. And then there was the mother. She was patient and giving. But she was a disciplinarian. I can still hear her say, “Go get a switch.” We lived in a community known as Hedgeview due to the well-manicured hedges. The downside was that
said hedges provided a tool for punishment. She had been raised rather sheltered due to the “war years,” as she still calls them. She was a preteen when World War II broke out. Her father was a boss in the coal mines so they lived comfortably. She was trusting of her daughters. My sister once told me that it wasn’t that she was such a goody-goody -- she just knew how not to get caught. At that time, I was probably more impressed by her behavior than all the awards and accolades she received when she graduated from high school. The patience level with me was tested when my sister left for Virginia Tech when she was 16. Even I didn’t think I’d get into a lifetime career -- and I didn’t have a particular plan when I got my high school diploma. Full-time employment changed my life, as well as that of my parents. They always knew my sister would succeed -- she had a plan at the age of 9. Mom and I became roommates in 2009 when
she relocated to the Richmond area as my sister’s health declined. The years we had with her by moving here are treasured. Now and again, we may experience a hiccup as we were both settled into different routines after having our own homes for several years. But, without a doubt, I am blessed to have Mom here. At 88, she is healthy and still active. This is home to both of us. On Sunday, I’m taking her to the restaurant that we last celebrated Mother’s Day with my sister in 2010. It will be emotional, but she’s always with us in our hearts and memories. While one day out of the year is designated for moms, we should do everything we can daily to thank her for her sacrifices and remind her how much we love her. I know that’s my plan for Sunday. Our relationship has had a few ups and downs through the years, but the love we share has never been questioned. I am so blessed that she is here with me. I love you, Mom! Happy Mother’s Day!
Songbird of the South falls victim to racist lyrics By Jim Ridolphi for Contributing Columnist There are few people in America who haven’t heard legendary singer Kate Smith belt out her easily recog-

As citizens of King William County, we happily got to have an all-day visit with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office on April 17 thanks to our lucky purchase of their contributed “Deputy-for-a-Day” experiential learning package to the American Cancer Society last fall. We have always been champions of law enforcement and have long known that they get little thanks and recognition from the public -- except perhaps when one of their ranks is killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. Our experience reinforced our strong opinion that each of us needs to change that and make sure they know we support them, their families, and their work. We were treated like VIPs from the outset by Sgt. James Cooper, who orchestrated and timed our visit to correspond to a number of activities and opportunities, including the following: After raising the colors with the current Academy Class, we sat in on two of their sessions and got to see these smart young professionals absorb a withering amount of difficult information from Deputy Shane Wickham. We also experienced the shooting range, saw confiscated drugs and paraphernalia, learned about citizen interactions and interdictions, fired a taser and learned how it is used to save lives and avoid lethal force, rode and drove a specially equipped cruiser with Deputy Russ Beltran, who showed us how officers learn to maintain control in slides, met with the Command Staff to learn more about the overall operations and functions of the Office, and rode with Deputy David Swanson and Deputy Evan Povar for part of their evening see LETTERS, pg. 20

hits Smith enjoyed during her heyday, or how she pioneered variety shows on black and white television in the early 1950s. I later learned my father’s devotion to Smith evolved from her dedicated work during World War II where she sold millions of dollars worth of war bonds. The soldiers didn’t ignore those efforts and heartily embraced the robust star and claimed her as their good luck charm.
In addition to the soldier connection, my father also admired Smith because she regularly featured one of his favorite performers on her variety show. That footage of Hank Williams on her show is some of the only surviving films of the star performing. Smith also featured singers like Josephine Baker on her show. In 1969, Smith’s rendition of “God Bless America” was played before a Philadelphia Flyer hockey game resulting in a Flyer victory.

What a Deal!
The tradition grew and fans noticed the correlation of Smith’s rendition and a Flyer victory. The aging singer made numerous live appearances at important games throughout the years, and, in 1989, the team erected a statue in her honor outside the arena. And for years, the New York Yankees have highlighted their seventh inning stretch by playing Kate’s version of “God Bless.” All of that came to an end earlier this month when some of her old recordings that contained extremely racist lyrics were discovered, not uncommon in music of the 1931 when they were recorded. I hope Smith, a Virginia native, at some point in her life regretted recording those two songs, and she made public comments long before the controversy supporting civil rights efforts in America. Those actions, misguided
for sure, led the Flyers to first cover and then remove her statue, and the Yankees followed suit by not playing her song during the stretch. Kate Smith was born in another generation. I don’t offer that as an excuse, but more of an explanation of how America has changed. I searched for some evidence in her life that would display a hatred for other races or bigotry but found none. Some have argued that history must be cleansed and clarified for the record, and acts of racism, past and present, must be revealed and revoked. I also hear the arguments from those who oppose the glorification of figures in our history who represented oppression and enslavement to their communities. There are reasonable and viable objections to dignifying abhorrent acts or recognizing people who supported or endorsed those violations, but,
for the life of me, I can’t see how Smith fits that description. I’m also not naïve enough to believe Smith didn’t suffer from the same affliction that permeated a culture in her era, and I’m sure she held a view that today is considered clearly racist -- just like almost everyone in the South during that era. For years, we hardly batted an eye when Virginia proudly displayed its state song, “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny” before it was packed up and put away. I understand the need to discuss difficult subjects and acknowledge past indiscretions and injustices, but I view history as an opportunity to learn, not an exercise to rectify or revise. As for the Flyers and Kate Smith’s statue, I’m not sure political correctness hasn’t taken a step too far.

Pets of the Week Photos submitted by Andrew Hodnett
The Hanover County Pound, located at 12471 Taylor Complex Lane in Ashland, has wonderful pets available to a good home. Donald, 547370, is a 2-year-old neutered male domestic shorthaired feline. He has had his first set of vaccines and is FELV/FIV test negative. Donald is a very nice cat. He came to the shelter in early April. Donald has a sweet personality and loves people. He is playful and energetic. Donald also is well litter-trained. He will make a perfect house companion. Daphne, 511621, is a 5-year-old spayed female Labrador Retriever/Boxer mix. She has had her first set of vaccines and is Heartworm test negative. Miss Daphne recently reached a milestone. She has officially been at the shelter for one year now. She is such a sweetheart that would love to have a forever home. Daphne does very well with people. She might do best being the only dog though. Daphne is very playful and loves to go on walks. She also has learned several commands. Please consider coming to the shelter to see her. For more information on these great pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Hanover County Pound Facility, call 804-365-6485 during the day. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The facility is closed on Sunday and county holidays. OBITUARIES | Death Notices & Funerals BERRY, Charles Sanford, 72, of Hanover County, Virginia, went to be with his Lord on May 1, 2019. He is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Nancy Tanner Fowler Berry; five children, Raymond Berry (Annette), Janice Sadler (Roy), Stephen Fowler, Brenda Stanley (Bobby), Marjorie Fowler; brother, Lawrence “Pete” Berry (Debra); numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and many other family BERRY members and friends. Charles retired from General Services Corp. after 25 years of service as a maintenance supervisor. He will be remembered by his family as a man who always had a smile on his face and was quick to laugh, ready to help on any project one of his children might have from building a porch to finishing a room. Even when Charles
had challenges with walking, he still attended numerous weddings, high school and college graduations, and traveled to Parris Island to witness a grandson becoming a United States Marine. Charles’ favorite pastime was to watch NASCAR races on TV, and if you happen to visit him in the afternoon during race season you learned all about the drivers and possibly became a racing fan yourself. Charles was an avid country music fan, and cheesecake was his favorite dessert when homemade peach ice cream wasn’t available. The family received friends on Monday, May 6, 2019, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, Mechanicsville Chapel, 8041 Lee-Davis Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111, where a funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at 2 p.m. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery. We are a military family residing in California so it was very important to have someone who could take care of all our needs on our behalf. Chad gave us some great recommendations for contractors and vendors and made sure they had access to our property when needed. Within one week of listing our property, we had a fully-qualified buyer with a great offer that we accepted immediately. The entire process went very smoothly. I never imagined it would be so easy. HANOVER -- Every year, from April 1 through June 30, it is unlawful for dogs anywhere in Hanover County to be running off their property without being leashed. The county’s “leash law” applies throughout the year in the suburban area. Between April 1 and June 30, it is extended to the rural areas as well because the births of vulnerable livestock, such as baby lambs and calves, tend to take place during this period. Wildlife activity and rabies cases also generally increase in the April 1-June 30 time frame. Any dogs caught running

County: Don’t place signs in VDOT right-of-way HANOVER – Residents are reminded that it is illegal to place signs within the Virginia Department of Transportation’s right-of-way and that violations of this law can result in fines. The VDOT right-of-way typically includes median strips, utility poles, street signs and the area between the road and ditch line. Hanover County actively enforces this state law throughout the county, and violators can be assessed a
$100 fine per illegal sign. Signs illegally placed on private property also are subject to civil penalties. David Maloney, director of Planning, said his office continues to receive complaints about illegally placed signs over the years and has assessed a number of fines. “A majority of these illegal signs are constructed of inexpensive materials and they remain within the public right-of-way or on private property and are neglected,”

This academy is designed to give participants an inside look into law enforcement with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. Animals get into the act too at the Ashland Strawberry Faire By Lorie Foley Special to The Mechanicsville Local SHLAND – Mark Maphis of Fin & Feather Pet Center of Ashland said he wants to see more pets adopted into forever homes. He also said that he believes there is an untapped opportunity to increase these numbers through the Ashland Strawberry Faire. This is the second year that Fin & Feather Pet Center of Ashland has sponsored a centralized “BARKing Lot.” The BARKing Lot will be located under the shade trees on East Patrick Street. There will be lots of water available for all of the furry guests! Several groups have registered to participate at the BARKing Lot, including the
A
Hanover Humane Society, Lab Rescue of Greater Richmond, Operation Paws for Homes, and Richmond Ruff House. If you would like to bring your animal rescue group to the Faire, visit www.AshlandStrawberryFaire.com. Participation is free for groups bringing animals for adoption. The “Kissing Booth” returns. Kiss a sweet adoptable dog to benefit one of the participating adoption groups. In addition to adoptable dogs, there will be pony rides adjacent to the BARKing Lot for a minimal charge per ride. The Pet Pageant is back at noon at the “Hanover in Action” Pavilion on Henry Street. All animals with fur are welcome to participate and all winners will receive
gifts from Fin & Feather Pet Center of Ashland. Pet Pageant categories include: best hair or fur; cutest pet; prettiest eyes; best “strawberry” costume; most amazing trick; and the all-around “Berry” Best pet. Visit www.AshlandStrawberryFaire.com to sign up your furry friend. The deadline to sign up is Saturday, June 8. As always, friendly pets are welcome to the Faire on a leash and controlled by their human handler at all times. The Ashland Strawberry Faire is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Proceeds from the Faire are returned to the community in the form of scholarships to Hanover County Public School seniors and in support of our many nonprofits.

Dr. Mack Reynolds to receive Honorary Degree from R-MC ASHLAND -- Randolph-Macon College President Robert R. Lindgren will confer an Honorary Degree to Dr. Arthur McKinley “Mack” Reynolds Jr., 1947, during R-MC’s Commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 1, at the Frank E. Brown Fountain Plaza on campus. Dr. Reynolds will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree, based on a recommendation of the college’s Joint TrusteeFaculty Committee and approval of the Board of Trustees, He matriculated to Randolph-Macon at age 16 and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics. He was a stellar science student elected to Chi Beta Phi, and actively involved outside the classroom as a football player and member of Lambda Chi fraternity and the R-MC Glee Club. Reynolds earned his M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia in 1953 and served as a flight surgeon in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Georgetown University from 1960 to 1963, and subsequently taught there as an associate

clinical professor. A devoted doctor, Dr. Reynolds built a thriving private practice in McLean from 1963 until his retirement in 1995. During his career, he served as president of the Northern Virginia Academy of REYNOLDS Ophthalmology, and as a board member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology actively engaged in Government Relations advocacy on behalf of ophthalmologists and patients. Reynolds has been a longtime, active, and effective volunteer on behalf of his alma mater. For nearly a decade, he was on the college’s Society of Alumni Board. He also served as the president of R-MC’s Boydton Society, leading this significant group of alumni who attended Randolph-Macon 50 or more years ago. In recognition of Reynolds’ important service to the college, he has received the Society of

Alumni’s Distinguished Service Award. Also, in 2012 he and his late wife, Jan, received the prestigious Sydney Algernon Sullivan and Mary Mildred Sullivan Awards, respectively. The Sullivan awards are given to individuals who serve RASHKIND others in an extraordinary and humble way. Reynolds is a generous supporter of a wide range of R-MC’s programs and initiatives, including the college’s career program, The EDGE. As a result of his remarkable philanthropy, he is a member of the Presidents Society and Heritage Society. In 2008, he established the Arthur McKinley Reynolds Lecture Series in memory of his mother and father, Arthur McK. Reynolds Sr., a member of R-MC Class of 1925. The Reynolds Lecture Series provides an important contribution to the College com-
munity as well as the greater Ashland and Richmond areas by sponsoring national figures to speak on issues of current events. Lindgren said, “It is the quiet impact that Dr. Reynolds has had on students, both here and as a member of the faculty of Georgetown Medical Center, that embodies Dr. Reynolds’ service above self. As a teacher and researcher, Mack has passed along the traits of medicine and ophthalmology to countless students. And at RandolphMacon, he has enhanced the education of our students, not only through his significant financial support, but also by his lecture program that affords an opportunity for many to experience some of the thought leaders of our time.” Alan B. Rashkind, R-MC alumnus, distinguished attorney, and retiring this spring after 10 years as chairman of the college’s Board of Trustees will be the keynote speaker for the Commencement ceremony. “We are thrilled that Alan — a dedicated alumnus, generous philanthropist and established leader—will serve as our Commencement see REYNOLDS, pg. 18

the cause of the exposure was undetermined, meaning we cannot conclusively say fentanyl was the culprit. The Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office’s decision to place AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) with attached NARCAN kits in patrol cars is smart, but not everyone may respond so rationally. In the past, inaccurate information regarding the spread of HIV led to fear among doctors. The possible risk of fentanyl should be carefully present-
ed with proper scientific evidence, otherwise it could lead to unnecessary fear among first responders. The time is takes to put on extra protective gear could be the difference between a patient surviving or becoming another casualty to the country’s opioid epidemic. Sindhu Karnam Mechanicsville

you’ll join me in supporting Angela Kelly-Wiecek for Chickahominy District representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors in the upcoming June 11 Primary. Growth is inevitable. Beware of anyone who sensationalizes this issue or tries to mislead you by saying they can “eliminate” it for their own political gain or for the sake of winning an election. Planning for much of the development in the Chickahominy District, and Hanover County for that matter, was approved years ago in our comprehensive plan and

is now coming into compliance. This comp plan process involved many public hearings with hundreds of residents attending and openly participating. Angela has been a tireless advocate for the residents in our district and county and makes herself accessible to anyone. She’s helped to manage growth by reducing the allowable density to eliminate congestion. She’s also focused on smart growth to preserve our rural areas and prevent sprawl by strategically locating residential growth in the suburban service area, which 8 PM

Angela worked hard and voted to KEEP cash proffers but unfortunately the final vote was to revoke them. Those funds were critical in supporting capital school projects and more. Not to be stopped, she continues to seek support for schools and other critical projects by cultivating strong relationships with businesses, civic organizations and local government. Patrick Henry ends Hawks’ unbeaten run By Dave Lawrence and Rob Witham Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Hanover’s softball team went into its Friday night contest with visiting Patrick Henry undefeated. But the Patriots did not come to town overawed. Like a boxing match in which neither fighter scores a knockout blow through 15 rounds, the two teams slugged it out over seven regulation innings. While Patrick Henry held a 2-1 lead through much of the game, neither team could land a game-ending blow. When Hanover tied the game with Jenna Currie’s home run in the seventh inning, it looked like the Hawks might have momentum going into the extra eighth. But the Patriots proved they were up to the challenge, outlasting the Hawks in a five-run eruption that ended in Patrick Henry’s ultimate 5-4 victory. Patriot pitcher Riley Dull was key to Patrick Henry’s final stand in the eighth inning. After the Patriots had scored three runs to go up 5-2 in the top of the inning, the Patriots gave up a pair of runs, one earned on Leslie Currie’s line drive deep into the Patrick Henry outfield, the other on an errant throw in to third that sailed out of play. Dull had to steady her-

Hanover’s softball team rushes out of the dugout to celebrate Jenna Currie’s home run that knotted the score against visiting Patrick Henry 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday. Patrick Henry would outscore the Hawks in the eighth inning for a 5-4 victory — and spoil Hanover’s undefeated record.
self and her team to stop the Hanover rally, and find a little bit more energy to get through the rest of the inning. “I know my team. My team is going to help me there, that’s what I’m thinking. I have to rely on them, they have to rely on
me,” Dull said. “I had to kick it in second gear for my team. I couldn’t let them down.” Next door on the baseball diamond, Hanover took an early lead, but the Hawks found the Patriots too pesky to go away quietly. Nevertheless, the
Hawks held on for a 6-3 win. Hanover set the tone early with a two-run home run by Blake Doggett to put them ahead 2-0 in the first inning. The Hawks extended the lead to 4-0 in the third before the Patriots got some offense going
in the sixth. “It was a good test tonight,” said Hanover head coach Tyler Kane. “In order to contest for anything at the end of the season you have to be able to win close games.”
Raider baseball gets tough In the midst of a battle for the top seed in Region 5B, Atlee baseball coach John Corbin had an ace up his sleeve. Turning to Ryan Mabry, and asking him to see RUN, pg. 26

make his first start of 2019 at archrival Lee-Davis, may turn out to be one of his best decisions this season. “Ryan Mabry is one of the toughest kids I’ve ever coached,” Corbin explained. “We wanted someone on the mound that was throwing strikes. He throws a lot of strikes, doesn’t try to strike a lot of guys out. He lets his defense work, and we have a solid defense.” Mabry’s trust in his teammates and bulldog mentality placed Atlee in the perfect position when, after three scoreless innings, the Raider bats cranked up, scoring 15 runs in the final three innings for a 15-0 win. The long ball made the difference, as Hayden Harris cranked a two-run homer to open the scoring in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Tucker Bratton and Zach Beach doubled, and Lee-Davis starter Connor Sorokowski was lifted after walking Tyler Warren to load the bases. Reliever Caden Plummer walked Harris to bring Bratton home, then, two batters later walked in another run, then hit a batter to bring home a third. It was 5-0. In the sixth, Atlee had already scored six runs on four hits and two Lee-Davis errors when Warren came to bat with the bases loaded and sent a pitch deep into the Mechanicsville night for the grand slam to complete the Raider offensive assault. Mabry finished his 70-pitch gem in the bottom of the sixth allowing a single to Nik Talley, striking out Logan Lewis, then inducing Jared Walton into a 4-6-3 double play to complete the night. “With a win like this, we were on a five-game losing streak at least to Lee-Davis, to come out with a convincing win will speak loudly for them going forward,” Corbin said.

Above, Lee-Davis catcher Zach Lass receives the throw at home just ahead of Atlee first baseman Zack Beach to end the first inning as Beach tried to score on Tyler Warren’s two-out double Friday. Atlee would win big 15-0. Below left, Lee-Davis third baseman Kiley Lamberth is surrounded by Raiders in a rundown after a unsucessful suicide squeeze in the Confederates’ 6-0 win.
With Mills Godwin at 12-2 and Deep Run at 13-3, two teams Atlee (10-4) has defeated, the Raiders need every win they can get in their final six games, including a home date with North Stafford Wednesday and a trip to Patrick Henry on Friday. At 11-6, opportunities for Lee-Davis to grab late wins to ensure a Region 5B tournament bid are dwindling. They aren’t easy either. After a trip to King William Wednesday evening,

Hanover visits Friday, then it’s Dave Lawrence/The Local off to Deep Run to end the Hanover’s Colby Hutnan (21) and Will Bowles (3) greet a smiling regular season on Tuesday. Blake Doggett after Doggett’s two-run home run in the first inning of the Hawks’ 6-3 win over visiting Patrick Henry Friday.
Henley gets no-hitter Across the complex at softball, another veteran ruled the night, but in a different way. Lee-Davis junior Savanah Henley is quite comfortable earning strikeouts, collecting 12 in a no-hit performance against archrival Atlee in a 6-0 victory which pushed the Confederates to 12-3.
Henley, once a freshman phenom who needed to be calmed down in tense times by upperclassmen, now finds herself the one encouraging and calming a set of younger teammates who are growing up very, very fast. “When we went to Manchester, before we got off
the bus, I just had a heart-toheart with them that, when you go up to bat, have confidence. You can hit it,” Henley said, recalling last Wednesday’s 1-0 battle against the area’s final unbeaten team. While Lee-Davis didn’t score that day, Henley saw that confidence grow, and it translated in
the third inning against Atlee. Already ahead 1-0, Madison McLaughlin singled to left, then scored when Henley sent a double to the center field fence for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Kylie Lamberth tripled to center, plating Henley. A squeeze attempt by Carlee Harding failed to score Lamberth, who was tagged out at home, but Harding advanced to second on the play, then scored on fellow freshman Riley Thompson’s single to make it 4-0 Lee-Davis. Atlee (7-6) entered the sixth inning having gotten two runners aboard, both via a hit by pitch. Two Lee-Davis errors turned the inning into their best scoring opportunity, eventually loading the bases on a walk to Carsen Sanders. But Henley fanned Riley Smith, and Atlee stranded three on base, Henley’s no-hitter intact. Another error opened the Atlee seventh, but Henley struck out the next three batters to end it. Atlee enters the homestretch of the regular season with plenty of question marks as it seems unlikely they will host a Region 5B quarterfinal as they did a year ago. Lee-Davis, on the other hand, is battling Glen Allen for the top seed, but the Confederates’ schedule down the stretch is like a murderer’s row, including a return match with Cosby Wednesday, the rematch at home with Hanover Friday, and two dates against Patrick Henry within 48 hours to conclude the schedule. “We’ve just got to continue to stay after it,” Lee-Davis head coach Jackie Davis said when looking ahead, continuing the theme of building confidence in the batter’s box. “Some of our young kids are really stepping up. They need to be put into situations like tonight. We have no gimme games left. I think playing Manchester, battling them, gave them more confidence tonight. Tonight will hopefully give them even more.”
R-MC lacrosse teams bow out of ODAC tourney By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – It is a similar script with an all-too familiar ending. Randolph-Macon women’s lacrosse advances to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game, only to find conference juggernaut Washington and Lee standing in the way. Sunday in Lexington, the Generals, the No. 1 team in Division III, tallied 11 goals in the first half thanks to dominant draw control play to win their 10th ODAC title in a row with a 17-7 victory over the Yellow Jackets. While the Generals are the only program to win ODAC women’s lacrosse championships – all 10 of them – in this decade, it was RandolphMacon’s fifth consecutive trip to, and defeat in, the championship round for head coach M.K. Geratowski and the Yellow Jackets. “[The Generals] were such a force in draw control today,” noted Geratowski, referencing nine won by Rebecca Wellford and four by Caitlin Anderson. Washington & Lee won 11 of 14 in the first half, and 18 of 25 for the match. The Generals also scored on five of six free positions in the first half while building the lead. But the weekend in Lexington had its high moments, too. In Saturday’s semifinal with No. 3 Roanoke, the Yellow Jackets were down by as many as three in the second half. The Maroons scored with 5:50 remaining to take a 12-10 lead. But sophomore Bella Samper scored unassisted just 15 seconds later, then – after Roanoke missed on four separate free position attempts – Saunders Riley, owner of the

game-winning goal against Shenandoah on Senior Day a week earlier to clinch the second seed, scored after a RandolphMacon timeout with 1:32 left to tie the match at 12-12. Hannah Jones, the team’s leading scorer, won the next draw control, and, with 21 seconds left, would accept a pass from Samper and find the back of the net to complete another heart-stopping comeback for a 13-12 victory. “It was so impressive to watch. They knew exactly what they needed to do for that goal, went out, and executed the play,” Geratowski said. “Our biggest improvement this season has been on offense. We have so many attackers, so many midfielders, who are threats.” And while the Yellow Jackets will miss Jones, who finished the year with 45 goals and 122 for her career, the return of the nucleus of the team – including Jones’ sisters Rachel and Lexi, Riley and senior defend-
ers Olivia Mott and Abby Roth – for 2020 gives Yellow Jacket fans great hope. Riley, Samper and junior goalkeeper Elicia Wells all made the All-ODAC Tournament Team. Men fall in quarterfinals Back on Wednesday night, men’s lacrosse, thanks to a goal from Andrew Tiffey, led Roanoke 8-7 and were just 2:13 away from a trip to the ODAC championship semifinal round. But the Maroons’ Matthew Lintner found a way to slide the ball past goalkeeper Chris Cerrina from the left side with just 45 seconds left in regulation, and, in overtime, defenseman Sam Balch fired a shot from 30 yards out that snuck past Cerrina, sending the Maroons to the semifinals with a 9-8 sudden-victory decision over the Yellow Jackets, who collapsed onto the Day Field turf, stunned at the final twist of what has been an historic season.
The teams traded goals early, then Peter Lindley, the ODAC’s leading goal scorer in the regular season (59), who missed the regular season match against Randolph-Macon 10 days earlier, tallied the first of his three goals on the night for a 2-1 Roanoke lead after a period. A fluke goal for defenseman Merrick Wood kept Roanoke from building a bigger lead late in the second period. Wood passed the ball well over the head of a teammate, sending the ball down the middle of the field. Roanoke goalkeeper Ian Davies was nowhere near the circle. By the time Lindley realized the loose ball was headed for the net, his diving save attempt failed, as Wood cut the deficit to 3-2. Lintner scored again 43 seconds later to make the Maroons lead 4-2 at intermission. Randolph-Macon (13-5) dominated the midway stretch of what was up to that point a scoreless third period, scor-
ing three times in 3:15 to take their first lead as Derek Marsilio fed Brendan Markovic twice for goals, and Colin DiSesa (Hanover) scored on a man advantage. Roanoke scored late to send the teams to the fourth squared at 5-5. Three times the Yellow Jackets would take a one-goal lead, and, three times Roanoke would answer, the final goal in the final minute of regulation to force the overtime. Roanoke won the overtime faceoff, but a Lindley shot was denied by Cerrina. Randolph-Macon, plagued by turnovers during the match, committed one final, fatal error deep in their offensive zone, beginning a fast break which sent the ball into the long stick of Balch, who wound and fired, getting the ball to the right bottom corner. Seeing the ball go by, Cerrina collapsed to the turf as the Maroons exploded in celebration. It was a bitter pill to swallow
for a team that shattered the program’s record for wins in a single season, once at 10, now at 13. To be so close to reaching the semifinal round for the first time since 2013, hosting an ODAC quarterfinal for the first time since 2012 – the first time ever at the current Day Field complex – the disappointment cut through the night air like a knife. But so did the love and appreciation from teammate to teammate, and from team to fan base as, when they collectively walked off the field for the final time, their fans formed a tunnel into Birdsong Hall, a standing ovation greeting them, thanking them for a season to remember, and thanking a senior class of 11 players for helping turn a 4-13 team their freshman year into a 13-5 team with high hopes for the new decade and beyond.

Randolph-Macon never recovered. Savannah Wood led the Yellow Jackets, going 3-of-3 with an RBI. Candace Whittemore was 2-of-3 with an RBI, and Kersin Roth went 2-of-3 with a run scored. MECHANICSVILLE – In its penultimate game of the regular season, No. 1 St. Catherine’s faced a true test when it traveled to face No. 3 Atlee on Wednesday night. The Saints delivered an A-plus performance. Abby Jenkins scored five goals and five assists, and the Saints commanded the game from the start to defeat the host Raiders 19-9. “We were really excited to play this game,” said St. Catherine’s coach Susan Taliaferro. “We got to come out here, play under the lights and it was a beautiful evening.” St. Catherine’s (10-4) also got three goals from Sally Herrington and Claire Horner, helping stave off a strong showing from Kathryn Miller, who cashed in a game-high six goals for Atlee (10-4). Miller also had an assist for the Raiders. After trading goals to start the match, the Saints went on a 4-0 run and never trailed. In an exclamation point to a strong first half, St. Catherine’s scored five straight goals to take

a commanding 13-3 lead into the break. Miller struck quickly with two goals early in the second half to put a minor dent into her team’s deficit, but the Raiders couldn’t string together a run to get them within striking distance of the supercharged Saints. Both teams featured a host of mutual friends on the opposing side, which made the buildup for the match that much bigger. “They were excited to play their teammates, friends and opponents,” said Taliaferro. “They got really pumped up for this.” Atlee goalkeeper Stella Harrison stopped 11 shots, while St. Catherine’s Ellie Horner recorded seven saves. St. Catherine’s improved to 10-4 on the season as they begin to prepare for the playoffs. Potomac School will be the Saints’ final tune-up before the postseason begins. “We just got to carry this over to the next game,” said Taliaferro. Alexa Macaulay, Arlo Gray and Forster Worrell added two goals apiece for St. Catherine’s.
doubles match to be completed. Kristin Dantzler earned the Yellow Jackets’ other win, a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sarah Wyly. The sixth-seeded men’s team was eliminated by third seed Virginia Wesleyan 5-2 in an ODAC quarterfinal on April 30. Both Randolph-Macon wins came in doubles play. Grant Sarver and Ryan Aud defeated the Marlins’ Mitchell Perry and Nick Gunther 8-5, while Erik Moulton and Alex Hein defeated Virginia Wesleyan’s Mike Portera and Paul Gladstone 8-7 (7-3).
