MECHANICSVILLE -Historic Polegreen Church will host a Naturalization Ceremony today (Wednesday, June 5), with over 70 people receiving their citizenship during the procession. The ceremony will start at 11 a.m., with the Lee-Davis Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps bringing in our nation’s colors. This will be followed by the singing of the Lee-Davis Chorus. Last year’s event was described as “very successful and emotionally moving.” Beth Young, the Historic Polegreen Church Foundation’s operations director, has helped host two Naturalization Ceremonies and said she is looking forward to experiencing a third. “I love watching the faces of the new citizens as they finally receive their citizenship after years of perseverance and devotion,” she said. A Naturalization Ceremony will get underway at 11 a.m. today at Historic Polegreen Church in Mechanicsville. Over 70 people will become United States citizens.
Church is an important site for religious freedom and serves as a very patriotic spot to receive one’s American citizenship. Dave Fuller, the Historic Polegreen Church Executive Board’s treasurer, said he believes that the significance of Historic Polegreen Church combined with a naturalization ceremony is monumental. “More than 275 years
ago, people first gathered at Polegreen to worship freely,” Fuller said. “That we can today gather at this remarkable site to launch figuratively a new beginning for American citizens is indeed quite special.” The public is invited to attend the ceremony and join in welcoming the new citizens. Refreshments will be available.

Voter: Wyatt deserves our support for House

hile there’s no denying that the past few months have been embroiled in a controversy swirling around the Republican nominee for the 97th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, don’t forget that there is an actual Primary Election next Tuesday. OK, it’s Wednesday, May 29, so what is the latest on the Scott Wyatt versus Chris Peace battle? Even though I thought I’d seen it all when it came to politics while covering elections and government in West Virginia, this saga has had me baffled at times. I’ll leave it at that as we head into wait-and-see mode, with the possibility of the nominee brou-
haha heading into the courtroom. I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout-out to Jim Ridolphi for his in-depth, as well as fair and balanced, reporting of the 97th District faceoff. He has spent countless hours in meetings, taking phone calls, and responding to emails as the nominee process continues to heat up. And where are the Democrats in this scenario? What is that party’s plan for the Nov. 5 General Election? In in-fighting among the Republican Party could be to the Democrats’ advantage. These days, nothing surprises me and I wouldn’t place a bet on who may come out as the 97th District delegate. While the House race has held a top spot in local news, let’s not forget that the Republicans
will be voting next Tuesday for the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. Seats are being challenged in the Beaverdam, Chickahominy, Cold Harbor and Mechanicsville districts. The 12th Senate District includes some of the South Anna District and two precincts in the Beaverdam District. As always, precincts open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. For more information on Tuesday’s Primary, visit https://www.hanovercounty.gov/361/VoterRegistration-Elections-Office. To keep up with the latest on the 97th District race, go to our Facebook pages: www.facebook. com/mechlocal and www.facebook.com/ashlandhanoverlocal. You’ll also find results of the Primary on those social media sites on June 11.
Tour revealed courage sent clergy to higher ground By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist As a child, I used to enjoy going to Washington, D.C., and taking in the many sights and attractions. One of my favorite places was the old Wax Museum near the Armory. It’s long gone now, and the historical displays are probably serving a second life as candles in some unknowing soul’s parlor.
The museum featured the regular wax fare of figures, including Jack the Ripper, President Roosevelt, Queen Elizabeth and Marilyn Monroe. But it was the final stop on the tour that intrigued me the most. You could hear it before it actually appeared, as a portion of a ship tossed in artificially rough waters, obviously on its last leg before a trip to Davy Jones’ locker. I met Scott Wyatt several years ago, when we both showed up with donations for a Hanover family who had lost everything in a fire. Later, when Scott became the Cold Harbor representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, I remembered his affable manner and neighbor-next-door demeanor. Over the years I have been impressed by Scott’s role on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, and have applauded his contributions to our community. I was delighted to see that Scott was challenging Del. Chris Peace, who had become an unreliable representative in the General Assembly over the last several years. In addition to being pro-life and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, Scott’s conservative platform also includes decreasing regulations, managing growth, lowering taxes, supporting small businesses, and public safety. His record shows his commitment to those principles. In 2018, Scott worked to rein in development. He pushed-back on Hanover’s 5-year comprehensive plan, reducing the density of multi-family complexes by 25%. Scott shares our concerns for out-of-control development! Scott also has demonstrated his support for small businesses. In his role as an appointee to the statewide towing board, he fought against regulations that would have crippled many towing companies, especially smaller companies in rural communities like ours. Scott also worked closely with the owners of Breakthrough K9, as they worked with the county to establish their business in Hanover. If an event that the Scott Wyatt campaign said was indeed cancelled following the recent rulings, more than 850 Hanover Republicans cast a ballot before noon, and the lines continued steady throughout the afternoon. Officials in King William

was the four chaplains. “The last thing I saw, the Four Chaplains were up there praying for the safety of the men,” Grady Clark recounted. That’s exactly the way I remember the scene at the old museum. Most of the men perished in the icy waters of the
Atlantic, and the four chaplains became national heroes. They have a day designated in their honor, have been the focus of numerous television and written inquiries, and prompted the founding of the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation. It’s official mission “is to
further the cause of unity without uniformity by encouraging goodwill and cooperation among all people.” The words are a fitting tribute to George Fox, Alexander Goode, Clark Poling and John P. Washington, the four chaplains immortalized in the story.
The four chaplains are only a small portion of the veterans we celebrate and salute on Memorial Day. We stand in tribute to all those who have served and sacrificed for their country, hearts filled with eternal gratitude for the price they paid. There is no higher calling.
to me that Scott protects the rights of property owners. Last year, the county edged towards building a large ath-
letic complex at the site of the Gaines Mill and Cold Harbor battlefields. As a soccer mom, I recognize the need for more playing fields. However, like the movie theater, this was the wrong location for the project. A quiet, rural neighborhood needn’t have high traffic, noise and bright lights next door! Scott listened to constituents and worked with the American Battlefield Trust, which purchased the property from the county. Scott protected that quiet neighborhood, while also preserving a piece of Hanover’s rich heritage. Scott also pushed back against higher taxes. When the county was looking to increase taxes through vehicle registration, Scott joined several other supervisors and killed the plan. Scott has the utmost respect for the men and women in public safety, whether that’s Fire-EMS, Animal Control, or the Sheriff ’s Office. He volunteers at fundraisers to support East Hanover and Black Creek Volunteer Fire Departments, and has done numerous ridealongs with sheriff ’s deputies to gain insight into the challenges they face on every shift. Members of the Sheriff ’s Office speak of their appreciation for Scott’s frequent visits, in which he inquires about current happenings and to learn about their needs. Scott’s insights into the inner workings of public safety allow him to address the needs of those departments, while still advocating for a conservative county budget. Finally, prior to retiring, Scott worked for 33 years in the
private sector before entering politics. His real world experience is a welcome change to career politicians! Scott Wyatt’s consistent conservative record reflects the 97th District’s values, and I look forward to voting for him in November! Deb Wetlaufer Mechanicsville

Talk about “squeezing out every penny of every dollar” to get the very best for the citizens of Hanover County. I have been in meetings of the Joint Education Committee. We can all be proud of the dedication that each of our supervisors have shown in providing the very best for every student in our county. Angela has fought successfully in obtaining funding for U.S. 360 Phase 2 and funding for the widening of Pole Green Road. Yes, Angela Kelly-Wiecek has been a leader that every citizen of the county can be proud. A leader that holds the needs and concerns of our citizens at the highest level. A leader who has proven her merits and abilities. Dependability and dedication seem to be rare qualities these days. To be sure that those qualities continue, vote for Angela Kelly-Wiecek. ning for re-election to serve as our Mechanicsville District supervisor. I live in the Suburban Service Area of Mechanicsville and have had the opportunity to work with Peterson on several community projects. He was most helpful in answering questions, listening to concerns, and attended all community meetings. He addresses issues with a watchful eye for all residents uin our district. As Mechanicsville continues to grow and change, we need a supervisor with experience, knowledge, and is available to listen to the concerns and ideas of the people he serves. Please remember to vote in the Primary Election on June 11. Our voices count. Patty Thomas Mechanicsville

Resident urges support for ‘Mrs. Bubbly’ I will never forget the first time I met Angela KellyWiecek. I nicknamed her “Mrs. Bubbly”. Angela never ceased to amaze me in all the activities she was involved with, which turned out perfect. Her willingness to hear all sides of a challenge and then was able to develop a successful solution. Angela and I participated in the Hanover County Planning Academy. I could tell then that she would go far in holding positions of responsibility. Angela was elected supervisor of the Chickahominy District eight years ago. I have been to a number of meetings that Angela chaired. Meetings that were well directed and had as their objectives meeting the needs of the citizens of Hanover County. How many times did I hear her constituents say, “You can depend on Angela to do what she says she will do.” What a record: chairperson of the Legislative Committee, member of the Safety and

Via proves candidates go door-to-door It’s quite refreshing to talk with Sarah Via and her desire to run for the Cold Harbor District seat on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. In an article in a recent issue of The Local written by Jim Ridolphi, he mentioned years ago candidates went door-to-door to meet people and ask for their support. I have not heard of it happening today. Well, Jim, it still happens today. I just found out that see LETTERS, pg. 18

He was 80 years of age. In 1970, after a stint in the U.S. Air Force and several unsatisfying jobs, Mr. Lawrence decided to take up what had become something of a family tradition. He followed his brothers Howard Linwood – who, at the time of his death in 1966 see OBITUARIES TO, pg. 11
OBITUARIES Continued from pg. 11
was assistant state editor of the Houston Chronicle – and Cecil Norman, who became one of the most memorable, if not exactly diligent, copyboys ever to have worked at The Shreveport (Louisiana) Times, into journalism, first as a student at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, then in 1973 as a copyboy and later that decade state editor at the Shreveport Times. His tenure at The Times was a significant one. He was part of an investigative team that uncovered rampant corruption in Shreveport city government. The team’s work provoked a violent backlash, with numerous threats to personnel, property and even families. A source, Jim Leslie, was murdered in Baton Rouge in the course of their reporting. But they persevered and, as a result of The Times’ reporting,
the people of the city changed their form of government to encourage more honest and responsive municipal leadership. Mr. Lawrence’s talent was recognized by the newspaper’s owner – Gannett – and he and his wife Kathleen Marie (Yee) Lawrence moved permanently to Virginia in 1986 where he worked at Gannett’s headquarters in Arlington for USA Today and, ultimately, Gannett News Service, from which he retired in 2000. Mr. Lawrence was the first of four children born to George William Fulton Lawrence and Frances Marie (Robinson) Lawrence. He arrived in 1938 in Haynesville, Louisiana, and was followed by brothers Howard and Cecil and sister Judy Diane. All but his sister have predeceased him. His family moved repeatedly between towns in Louisiana and Arkansas before settling permanently in Shreveport, where he graduated from Fair
Park High School. He had a brief flirtation with Centenary College before joining the Air Force, and met his future bride – another Air Force veteran – at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts where both where stationed. He and Kathleen were married in 1960 and their son, David Meade Lawrence, touched down at the base hospital in 1961. The family relocated to Shreveport after Mr. Lawrence’s honorable discharge in 1962. The family tradition – vocation – of journalism as taken up by Mr. Lawrence and his brothers proved infectious, as his son was drawn into the profession and is an award-winning photojournalist and author. His wife is a published novelist. Mr. Lawrence quickly and justifiably fell in love with his daughter-in-law, Alison Mary Sinclair. He loved history, an interest passed down to his son and his grandson, Malcolm Owain Lawrence,

other process that took place, it smells.” Lynn Sanders, a government teacher, agreed. “I think this turnout shows that (The ballot below compiles all the races; voters will receive a ballot specific to their district.) people didn’t like the way Information provided by Teresa F. Smithson, Director of Elections/General Registrar this was handled. That’s just not the way we do things in Hanover.” And others said they just wanted to cast a vote and have their voice heard. “Chris has been our representative and has done a good job for this district,” said Edwin Mills. “Chris has spent a lot of time for us, so this a small thing we can do.” Farther down the line, a man who said he supported Wyatt was jovial as he waited to cast a ballot. “I voted once in a convention you all said was cancelled. Now, I’m voting in a primary we said is cancelled. I’m hoping one of those votes will count,” the man, who asked that his name not be used, said. On Wednesday, the Hanover Republcan Committee ousted chairman Dale Taylor. Per the party plan, Darryl Carr assumed the chair and became the unit’s Legislative District Committee member, replacing Mike Reynold. The implications of that change were apparent when the LDC met the following morning and seated Carr and subsequently passing a series of motions that cancelled the Canvass and accepted the results of the May 4 Convention that nominated Wyatt. Wyatt’s position was reinforced by a 1st District Committee ruling that upheld his claim to the nomination. That action was upheld by the State Central Committee late last week, and the Republican Party of Virginia removed the call for the canvass from its website. Wyatt has consistently claimed the nomination pro-
cess is over and he is the candidate, and it appeared many of his supporters were not participating in Saturday’s canvass. Peace said none of those seemingly pro-Wyatt rulings mattered since Taylor’s removal was deemed improper and out of order by the RPV’s general counsel, and pointed to a long line of voters as a true representation of Hanover Republicans. “I got up this morning and didn’t know what to expect with the information overload and frustration people had with the whole thing,” Peace said. “It would have been completely reasonable for people to say I’m tired of all of it and not come, but I think what we are seeing is that people are tired of it and that pent-up frustration is what we are seeing today.” As to what happens following Saturday’s tally, Peace was clear on his position. “As far as I know this is the authorized process. If the General Counsel ruled that Dale Taylor’s removal was not lawful, then everything else that is done from that is also not lawful,” he added, stating that the Executive Committee actually ruled on a non-issue he likened to “air.” Peace campaign advisor Boyd Marcus also viewed the turnout as definitive in determining the true intent of voters in the district. “This event today is going to show pretty conclusively what the voters of the 97th District think about all this maneuvering and back room dealing that’s gone on with
the Wyatt campaign,” Marcus said. “I think the Republican Party power structure needs to listen to the people in the district.” With both candidates claiming victory, resolution seems unlikely, and both campaigns have retained attorneys for the upcoming battle that seems destined to end up in court. On a news radio program last week, Wyatt said the nomination race is over and he is legitimately certified by the LDC as the nominee. “It’s over,” Wyatt said. “At the end of the day, I look forward to representing conservatives who live in the eastern part of Hanover County and New Kent and King William,” Wyatt said. Wyatt said he was nominated following guidelines issued by the Republican Party Plan, and is focused on November. “I will vote with Republicans 100 percent of the time,” Wyatt said. While Peace worked the polls, Wyatt was campaigning at several Mechanicsville events, including the Cold Harbor Ruritans Shrimp Festival. Peace said he’s ready for the fight. “It is humbling to have such overwhelming support from our district. I promise to continue fighting for this district’s future and values. Wherever this fight takes me, I will ensure that the voice of 97th District voters that was heard today is fully respected and duly acknowledged — whether it is in a State Central Committee or in the courts.”

that will take several years. A community meeting on the proposed design will be held when a preliminary design is completed. Acquisition of right-of-way needed will begin in Fiscal Year 2022, with construction scheduled to begin in Fiscal Year 2025. There have been several phases of improvements to Pole Green Road. The improvements began in 2004 with the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersections of Pole Green and Bell Creek roads and continued in 2009 with the widening of Pole
Green Road from the Interstate 295 interchange to Bell Creek Road. In 2011, additional through and turn lanes were built at the intersection of Pole Green and Bell Creek roads. There is also news regarding Atlee Station Road. At last month’s meeting, the TPO also agreed to provide $2.5 million in funding for Phase II of the widening of Atlee Station Road, with a commitment to provide additional funding. The proposed project involves widening Atlee Station Road to four lanes between Atlee Manor and Charter Gate Drive. Additional funding support is needed for the Atlee
Station Road project, which is currently projected to cost $31 million. The county has designated $5 million in its CIP and plans to apply for $10 million in revenue sharing funds from the Virginia Department of Transportation. Chickahominy District supervisor Angela KellyWiecek said that Atlee Station Road Phase II widening is now classified as a regional project and with the full funding of Pole Green Road, and becomes the top priority for Hanover County future road projects. Memorial Day crowd inspired by message of loss and hope By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ANOVER -- Since its opening more than a decade ago, the Hanover Veterans Memorial on U.S. 301 has hosted its fair share of important speakers to deliver the keynote address at either its Memorial Day or Veterans Day ceremonies. But few have delivered a more poignant or inspirational message than Robert L. Fitzgerald, a former U.S. Army drill instructor and this year’s keynote speaker for the Memorial Day celebration held on Monday, May 27. Fitzgerald is a 24-year disabled Army veteran who has spent more than three decades since his service assisting disabled veterans obtain employment and put shattered lives back together. He told a record crowd his heart-wrenching story of loss and sacrifice as he noted the significance and importance of Gold Star families across the nation. The Gold Star is a dignified reminder of a family’s loss, the sacrifice of one of its own in our nation’s continuing fight for freedom. When a family member who served in the Armed Forces dies in the line of duty, families display the star in honor of their fallen loved one. But, it serves as a reminder to all that the cost of freedom is sometimes unimaginably

high, and Fitzgerald knows that first-hand as one who is keenly aware of the meaning of Memorial Day. His message came from the heart. Fitzgerald told of his special relationship with a group called American Gold Star Mothers Inc. In June 1928, 25 mothers established an organization to honor the sons, daughters and other family members who have been lost

serving their country. “The main purpose of this organization is to serve mothers who have lost their children,” Fitzgerald said. “These children are on active duty, missing action or died while serving,” the former drill sergeant said. The mission of Gold Star is to support those families and communities that have suffered losses of serving
members. They are recognized by a Gold Star flag that hangs in windows of houses, churches or automobiles that denotes the special sacrifice this family has made to America’s future. “This flag means we should never forget,” Fitzgerald said. The importance of the Gold Star hit far too close to home for the Fitzgerald in
2006 when he received news of his son’s death in Iraq. “Our lives changed forever on Sunday morning at 2 a.m. when I received a call that every parent dreads,” Fitzgerald said. That was the day in February when they received the news their son, Aimar, had been wounded.” Fitzgerald told of his son’s commitment to his troops and his failure to abandon them
when opportunities arose for him to rotate out. The senior Fitzgerald instilled that sense of duty and honor in his son, and, sometimes, that commitment causes him to doubt his decision to prioritize those qualities in his son. “Sometimes, I blame myself for the loss, and then I reflect on the times we had together,” Fitzgerald said. The retired Army veteran told his story from the heart, often wiping tears from his cheek or his voice cracking with emotion, and, when he concluded, the overflow unanimously stood in salute to a man who knew what the ultimate sacrifice truly meant to the families who display the Gold Star. “When you have a Gold Star parent speaking at his event, it really brings home why we have a Memorial Day,” Sean Davis, Henry District representative on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, said following the address. “I’ll tell you what. That was as good a speech as I’ve heard,” said Del. Buddy Fowler, R-55. The Hanover County Parks and Recreation Department and the Hanover Memorial Veterans Committee sponsored the annual event held at Hanover Wayside Park just off U.S. 301 near Hanover. The memorial is open daily for visitors.

‘New’ Ashland Theatre honored for preservation By Rob Witham for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND — History, pride, tradition, continuity, and vision are among the special ingredients in the fabric woven together to create the Town of Ashland. Appreciating and preserving the past is as imperative as the forward-thinking needed to sustain a town that has produced generations of memorable citizens. The late Art McKinney is counted as one of those noteworthy residents. He bought the former D.B. Cox Department Store along the railroad tracks in the downtown, transforming the location to house both his engineering firm and The Ironhorse Restaurant. “The highest praise I can offer anybody is to have left things a little better than you found them, and I think that’s
an important thing to carry through life, whether in family or business, or your community,” he had said, McKinney’s words echoed through the surround sound of the Ashland Theatre last Wednesday evening, as the Ashland Main Street Association and Ashland Museum honored the theatre as the third recipient of the Art McKinney Historic Preservation Stewardship Award. During the ceremony, Ashland Mayor Steve Trivett talked about a more completed portrait of Ashland, now that the theatre’s famed marquee is alive and well, again lighting up the night sky in the Center of The Universe. When it was not in operation, he said, he likened it to going through family photos and noticing a prominent member missing, and wondering why.

Universe from the Center: Observatory on hiatus for summer By Dr. George Spagna for The Mechanicsville Local Note: The Keeble Observatory at RandolphMacon College is on hiatus for the summer. One of our summer projects will be installation of automation for the observatory dome so that it will track with the telescope. Weekly public viewing sessions will resume in September. Watch our web site (https://www.rmc.edu/keeble) or check the information line (804-752-3210) for updates. I promised to discuss black holes in this month’s column, but there was some interesting news about Jupiter that I’ll share first. NASA’s Juno probe has been orbiting Jupiter since July 2016, making detailed measurements of the giant planet’s atmosphere and magnetic field. Originally planned for 14 day orbital periods
relatively close to Jupiter, the probe has been left in a more elliptical 53 day orbit because of concerns about the valves in the thruster system. The mission has accordingly been extended to allow time to complete the science objectives. The plan is to deorbit (i.e. destroy by burning up in the atmosphere) in July 2021. The magnetometer experiment has detected what are called “secular changes” in the magnetic field, the first time confirmed for any planet other than Earth. Our own magnetic
field orientation wanders, with the north magnetic pole currently moving rapidly across the arctic from Canada towards Siberia. Surprisingly, the secular changes for Jupiter originate closer to the equator in a region dubbed the “great blue spot.” It’s not really blue in color, but that’s how the false color Metro Creative Connectionimages of the field are coded. Speaking of spots, Jupiter’s Great Red Spot may be disappearing. This is a huge anti-cyclone in the southern hemisphere which has been observed for over 400 years. Its color changes over time from
pinkish to deeper red, but it used to be much larger. Three decades ago it was about 3 Earth diameters across (Jupiter itself is about 10 Earth diameters), so you can see why we call it Great! However, over the last 30 years it has shrunk to only one Earth diameter (about 8000 miles). Recently we have seen it appear to “unravel.” Long streamers stretch out from the southern edge of the storm, and then detach and disappear. Several months later, the process (whatever it is) repeats. Continuous observation is not possible since the planet rotates in only 10 hours, so amateur astronomers are being asked to monitor and pass their observations on the professional researchers. Next month we’ll get back to our black hole

this energetic mom, Sarah Via, went door-to-door looking for support.
She is not looking to be a politician but a servant of the people of this district. She sees changes that need to be made and is willing to step up to the plate and make it happen. She is a good Christian mother and a lifetime resident of our county. It is wonderful to see an ordinary citizen running for this office. She is a conservative person (look at the small signs she has put up — not those huge $500 signs). This speaks volumes to me as she will do the same thing when she is in position of handling our tax dollars. Please give Sarah your support. I am most anxious to see

Stanley merits support for years of service I was going through some old notes the other day and came across an article. The main theme centered around serving others. We have heard the saying, “To Serve, Not to Be Served” I am sure. We all know those who live by that motto of serving and not seeking to be served. There is one particular gentleman that comes to mind that I met about 30 years ago. I was impressed by his friendly smile, his genuine

Yes, Aubrey “Bucky” Stanley still lives that motto “To Serve Not to Be Served”. I have seen Bucky’s monthly schedule a number of times and I have to ask him each time, “When do you sleep?” Many days, Bucky’s days start at 6:30 a.m. and do not end until 10 or 10:30 that night. How many times have I heard residents of the Beaverdam District say, “If Bucky says he will meet at such and such a time, he will be there. If Bucky says he will do something, you can count on it
getting done.” I know that there are those that say, “Thirty-six years is long enough, we need someone new.” There are things that you have done all your life and have not changed and I ask why. Why – because they work. You can depend on them. For 36 years, the citizens of Beaverdam have elected Aubrey “Bucky” Stanley because he has worked for them; he is a person you can depend upon. residents, as well as surrounding areas, giving a nod to the days when, in its original glory, the Ashland Theatre provided entertainment through motion pictures, information through newsreels, and continuity as the place for friends to gather and feel safe and welcomed in one another’s company.
“I have two young children, we moved to Ashland, and was attracted to the theatre immediately,” Mercer, a former Alexandria resident, said. “I wanted a place where they could put down their phones, put a screen away and laugh, think, and be challenged. It’s nice to have big TVs in our homes, but I think there’s a sense of place and community that goes miss-
ing. Having a spot like this where you see people, you know who’s volunteering, it’s an opening place.” The award, which included a historic designation plaque unveiled on the wall next to the box office outside, is a culmination of nearly a decade of extremely hard work, a labor of love to restore a crown jewel of Ashland to its rightful place. The project would not have
happened without the generous donation of the building in 2013 by local developer A.D. Whitaker. Jake’s Place received the Association’s first award in 2017, followed by the Sweet Frog location across from the theatre a year ago. It’s all a part of balancing appreciation and preservation of the beloved history of Ashland with casting a vision for its future.

“We’re poised to continue to do this kind of work,” noted Lorie Foley, president of the Ashland Main Street Association. “People want an experience. They want a town that’s a little different, and we’re very different, with the tracks running through town, all these historic buildings, we have a lot of offer.” To that end, the Association embarked on a fundraising campaign at the event to erect a series of solar-powered, lighted planters with large evergreens to help transform England Street, providing direction for residents and visitors to come to the downtown district. It’s a nod to the continuity crucial for a town with several great components seeking to be better connected. The planters would be installed from the theatre area down England Street towards the railroad tracks. To learn more about the project, and to make a contribution, visit MainStreetAshland.org. The association’s new website project, AshlandVirginia.com, is scheduled to go live early this month, dedicated to providing visitors as well as residents information on the offerings of Ashland, those made possible by the unique fabric of the town, preserving the past while planning for the future.

Dull, Patriots upset Hawks in region final By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local
Dave Lawrence/The Local
Patrick Henry’s Madelyn Jeuick keeps her eye on the ball as she launches a fly ball to right field in the Patriots’ 3-0 victory over host Hanover in the Region 4B softball championship game Thursday. Patrick Henry pitcher Riley Dull struck out eight in the win.
MECHANICSVILLE – They call it the leadoff batter for a reason. The first batter of an inning should lead the way for the rest of her teammates. In 5 of 7 innings Thursday, Patrick Henry put its leadoff batter aboard, manufacturing runs in three of those opportunities. Combine that with the stellar pitching of Riley Dull, and the Patriots captured the 2019 Region 4B softball championship with a 3-0 win at top seeded Hanover. “I think we wanted it more than they did, honestly,” Dull said after her shutout effort. “They did a great job of getting somebody on base every inning and putting some pressure on us,” said Hanover head coach Michael Rohr. “We didn’t make some of the routine plays that we’ve been making.” The Patriots (16-6) made do without senior shortstop and leader Autumn Slemaker, who was on the bench in a walking boot. They got the offensive boost they needed from Blair Rhodes, who moved from second base to shortstop, going 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. Jamie Hughes opened the second inning with a fly ball dropped in right field, allowing her to speed to third base, later
scoring on an Emma Keys bunt single down the first base line. Keys advanced to third, but two Ellen Palya strikeouts prevented her from scoring. In the third, Rhodes roped a double to begin the frame and scored thanks to another Hanover error on a Saxon Radcliffe shot towards third base. Her confidence growing, Dull sent the Hawks down in order in the home half, part of 11 consecutive Hawk hitters unable to reach base until a pinch-hit single from Alyssa Broaddus in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. Dull got Bella Pastore to hit a grounder back to the circle to end the brief threat. Rhodes scored her second run earlier that inning, drawing a walk, moving to second on a Radcliffe sacrifice, and scoring on an Erin White sacrifice. Hanover (18-3) mounted its biggest threat in the sixth as Leslie Currie and Jessica Russell hit back-to-back singles. But Julia Mardigian popped out to Rhodes at shortstop, and Dull fanned Palya to strand the runners. Dull threw an efficient 77-pitch game, the final throw earning her eighth strikeout and setting off the Patriots’ victory celebration. The win earned Patrick Henry its first region title since claiming the

Raider boys, girls advance to lacrosse semifinals By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local It was unusual for Atlee girls lacrosse head coach Christina Dobson to stand on the sideline and watch her Raiders deal with two opponents. But in last week’s Region 5B Championship match with upstart Mills Godwin, Dobson observed the team allowing complacency to set in after taking an 8-3 halftime lead. “We just checked out mentally, and that created a domino effect,” Dobson explained. “A lot of things that went wrong were of our own doing, so I feel like we kind of gave it away.” Eagles goalkeeper Amber Stallings held Atlee to two second half goals as Mills Godwin came back to stun the Raiders 11-10. The loss sent Atlee to Class 5 state quarterfinal play Friday hosting Mountain View, runners-up in Region 5D. But, as fate would have it, Dobson and her staff, weeks before, had invited a special guest to their practice following the region title loss. “We had Sergeant [J.P.] McGuire coming in the day after the championship and work with the girls,” Dobson noted. “It wasn’t what we initially intended it to be, but the timing couldn’t have been better because he’s an expert in motivation, communication and mental discipline. It was the regroup that we needed.” The message of McGuire, a Purple Heart recipient who served as an assistant coach for Lee-Davis High School wrestling this year, was not only heard loud and clear, but applied liberally Friday night, as the Raiders took the field and scored 17 first-half goals to run away from the Wildcats 20-6. Mountain View had entered the match at 12-2, but the Raiders wasted no time clinching a state

Atlee shut out complacency as well. The victory returns Atlee into the crosshairs of Mills Godwin, the Eagles hosting the Class 5 state semifinal Tuesday after this edition went
to press. The winner earned a berth in Saturday’s 3 p.m. Class 5 state championship at Deep Run High School against the winner of the other state semifinal between Patrick HenryRoanoke and defending cham-
pion Freedom-South Riding, which defeated Atlee to win the title a year ago. Dobson, and her team – especially Atlee’s seniors – remember all of that, and, after a mental reset, are ready to take the final step and finally bring a state championship lacrosse trophy back to Raider Nation.
“This group of seniors were freshmen my first year here, and I want it for them,” Dobson said. “I told them, people don’t get a lot of second chances in life, so it will say a lot about our character as to how you respond to this.” The Atlee boys lacrosse team also hopes to take that final step. State runners-up in 2015, 2016 and 2017, the Raiders had to face Deep Run in the Class 5 semifinal Tuesday after this edition went to press to earn another trip to the state championship against either John Champe or Briar Woods – the team that ended Atlee’s 2018 season – Saturday morning at Deep Run. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
Three locals claim Class 5 track championships By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor Injuries, illnesses and weather took a toll on area track and field teams in their respective state tournaments this past weekend, but local teams finished with plenty of praiseworthy performances – and several state champions. Atlee was the big winner. The Raiders, at the Class 5 state championships at Todd Stadium in Newport News Friday and Saturday, finished with two champions: Kameron Helmlinger in the boys 800meter run and John Duegaw in the boys pole vault. The Raiders’ John Thumma finished second to his teammate in the pole vault. Lee-Davis’ Isaac Grubbs was third. The Raider boys finished in a tie for fifth place with Prince George. It was a good weekend for Region 5B, as L.C. Bird, Highland Springs, Bethel and Hermitage finished ahead of the Raiders and Royals. “It was a good weekend for us overall,” said Atlee head coach Tyler Busch. “We had two new state champions. … It was great for those guys.” The Lee-Davis girls did well

Hawks’ soccer teams end seasons in semis By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Despite two talented teams, Hanover’s state soccer championship dreams ended in disappointment in the Region 4B semifinals on May 28 with the Hawk girls’ 1-0 loss to visiting Midlothian and the Hawk boys’ 6-1 loss to Chancellor. The Trojan girls scored in the first half and held steady for the rest of the game. As the time fizzled in the second half, so did
Hanover’s chances as the Hawks failed to establish control of the ball, with rushed passes leading to turnovers that allowed Midlothian to keep pressure on Hanover’s goal. “We pushed hard. We just couldn’t bury one in the net,” said Hanover head girls soccer coach Manny Tavares. “I don’t think it was the fact that they had a better defense. We just had a night where nothing would work.” In Hanover’ Region 4B boys semifinal, the Hawks struggled
with injuries to four key players, and their undefeated hosts took advantage of it. Despite falling behind early, the Hawks never gave up, fighting to get their own goal late in the game. “We did not look overwhelmed,” said Hanover head boys soccer coach Laurent Body. “But [Chancellor] had very good players, that’s for sure.” The injuries – especially to striker Ashton Poythress, who has scored more than 20 goals this season – put a damper on the Hawk offense. Two defend-
ers went down, which hurt Hanover’s ability to stop the Charger onslaught. Still the fact that the Hawks managed to score a goal on an almost invincible Chancellor offense was a positive, as the Chargers had had only one goal scored against them in the regular season. “It was something to have scored a goal on them,” Body said. “That meant a lot.” Dave Lawrence/The Local Dave Lawrence can be Hanover forward Maggie Grimes (17) tries to clear the ball from reached at dlawrence@mechlo- the Hawk zone in Midlothian’s 1-0 win over host Hanover in a cal.com. Hanover baseball edges Midlo for region title By Arthur Utley and Dave Lawrence For The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – The Hanover High baseball team hasn’t missed a step in former assistant coach Tyler Kane’s first season as head coach. The Hawks, playing at home, rallied from a two-run deficit and won the Region 4B championship 3-2 over Midlothian on Thursday night. Both teams already had earned spots in next week’s Virginia High School League Class 4 state tournament. Hanover (19-2) hosted Great Bridge of Chesapeake Tuesday after this edition went to press. Midlothian (15-7) traveled to Williamsburg to play Lafayette. Kane took the reins when Charlie Dragum, Hanover’s only baseball coach since the school opened in 2004, retired with three state championships, two state runners-up and numerous region titles (the first was in 2005). “We had 10 seniors coming back and those kids were overshadowed for three years with [Jack Dragum and Cayman Richardson among others] and this was their year to prove it. They’re plenty good. Enough to win regional championships, they just had to build that confidence within,” Kane said. “We challenged them all year, even in the offseason … whether it was first one to the field or see who could throw the most strikes in the bullpen. Everything was challenge based. Once they built that confidence they started to realize they could play with anybody, and they’ve run with it. We just write the lineups. They go out and execute and play and we’re just so proud to sit back and watch them grow and mature as young men.” The Hawks used five pitch-

approach where we wanted to throw a lot of guys. Some guys didn’t have their best stuff, but they fought throughout the night and did enough to where they kept us in the game,” Kane said. “The offense came through late. They threw two tough pitchers. The starter [Alex] Kyte was able to throw three pitches for a strike and kept us off balance most of the night. The second kid [Carter Lovasz] who came in was really tough as well. When you get in a regional championship, you’re going to see good arms no matter who you play.” Hanover scored its first run in the fourth. Hutnan singled and later scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Jack Mardigan. The Hawks, who had five hits to Midlothian’s three, scored twice in the fifth. Jordan Watkins walked, moved up on a sacrifice bunt, and Sam Dave Lawrence/The Local Hanover pitcher Eric Anderson pitched five shutout innings in leading the Hawks to a 6-1 victory over visiting Courtland on May 28. Lipscombe’s singled for the RBI. Lipscombe scored what proved to be the winning run on a double by Blake Doggett. “They just kept mixing in breaking balls and getting us off balance and doing a good job with that,” said Doggett, who the second, Roberts made his Hayden Harris, allowing down. By Weldon Bradshaw For the Times-Dispatch RICHMOND – Stay calm, Ivy Ray told herself. Be patient. Focus. Wait for your pitch. That’s easier said than done, of course, when you’re facing Savannah Henley, Lee-Davis’s ace left-hander. Nevertheless, the Mills Godwin sophomore third baseman followed her inner voice on a toasty Tuesday afternoon, and the result was spectacular. In the top of the seventh in the semifinal round of the Region 5B softball tournament, Ray, a right-hander, drilled a screwball on the outside corner over the 205-foot right centerfield fence to give the No. 4 Eagles a 1-0 victory and a berth in the regional final Friday against No. 2 Glen Allen, a 2-1 victor over No. 3 Atlee. “I stepped into the box, and I was nervous because I’m always nervous,” Ray said. “But I knew it was in my cards tonight. Hawks edge Powhatan in 4B semifinal PATRIOTS

By Nick Vandeloecht Richmond Suburban News MECHANICSVILLE – Bella Pastore has had some strong atbats the last few games, but not a lot to show for it, her head coach Mike Rohr pointed out. Following her efforts in practice, Rohr was hoping she’d get one on game day. She did. Facing Powhatan in her first at-bat of the day with one out on the board, the sophomore hooked the ball and sent it sailing out of the park, growing her Hanover Softball team’s advan-
tage to three runs. Pastore’s solo homer also kept her Hawks ahead of a strong midgame rally from the Indians, and Hanover pulled away to win the Region 4B semifinal round 6-2. “Powhatan’s awesome,” Rohr said of the young and talented team. “They’re very well-coached – I thought they were one of the best teams we’ve played all year. We’re real fortunate to get past them.” With the victory, the Hawks advanced not only to the region see EDGE, pg. 30

former Region 5A North championship in 2015. “I think Riley and Saxon did a great job of attacking the zone,” said Patriots head coach Lance LeStourgeon. “We like to think we do things a little differently here at PH. We are hitting our stride at the right time, and everybody’s on board.” Cohesiveness is key. So is a next player up mentality. Lauren Ely, who only arrived at Patrick Henry from out of state in January, filled in at second base admirably. Thus, even with Slemaker sidelined, the aggres-
sive attitude of the Patriots didn’t change. As postgame ceremonies concluded, Rohr, with a smile, yelled over to LeStourgeon, “See you next Saturday”. Indeed, should the Hawks and Patriots win their state quarterfinal and semifinal games, the two teams would meet for a fourth time this season, and it would be for the game’s biggest prize: the Class 4 state championship. And, since rivals Atlee and Lee-Davis did just that only two seasons ago, their western counterparts are both eager to do the same. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

New Atlee pitcher Ryan Mabry hit Wade Clements with a pitch. The Royals led 4-3. Seven batters, five singles, and seven runs later, Atlee walked to their dugout down 11-3. The Raiders managed a run in the seventh, but, appropriately, a double play executed perfectly by a Prince George defense best described as porous before Forbes took the field, clinched the young Royals’ return to the Class 5 state tournament. Even Forbes, a young man of few gestures or words, enjoyed the postgame celebration, ever praising his teammates, even heading to the dugout to watch the seventh inning unfold. Joe Mahoney/Times-Dispatch “My team’s going to have my Deep Run’s Caley Shriner (left) and Atlee’s Belle Skelton back. Hanover 6, Courtland 1: The Hawks gave starting pitcher Eric Anderson a comfortable cushion in the first inning, and Anderson did the rest in the Hawks’ win over the Cougars in their Region 4B semifinal on May 28. Anderson struck out 10, giving up just one hit and no runs in five innings of work. “Eric Anderson has done a fantastic job. He’s done what Eric’s done all year. He goes in and throws two pitches for strikes and makes it really hard on the opposing team,” Kane said. “He’s a senior. He’s waiting his turn behind some pretty good arms that have come through the last couple of years, and he’s gone out and competed and done everything we’ve asked of him.” Anderson said his apprenticeship made him better. “The previous years, I feel like they made me try to become better because I kept

Pastore extended her team’s advantage on her solo blast over
the center field fence in the second. But after Palya no-hit Powhatan’s rotation once, leadoff batter Briana Hensley in the fourth inning broke her Indians’ drought on a wellplaced bunt, and after Lindsey Elam reached on Hensley going out on a 5-4 play at second base, UCONN commit Rileigh De Weese smashed a one-out, two-run homer over the right field wall to slash Hanover’s lead down to 1. Hits by Kayla Davis and Madeline Peloke put them on the corners against 2 outs, but Palya struck out the next batter to strand the tying and go-ahead runs on base. When they got here, they made the most of the moment, which was pretty cool to see.” The Hawks have continued the momentum of a 2019 season that saw them open the year on 14 straight wins, go 16-2 in the regular season and earn the number-one seeding in the regional tournament. “They took a lot of ownership this year of putting them-

selves in a position where they could get there,” Rohr said of his players, “and one of the things they really wanted to do was be able to play a lot of games here because they like playing at home. They accomplished that.” And they played a brutal schedule, he added. “We dropped a couple [games] late there, but I thought we were in both games and had chances to win both those games,” Rohr said, adding of his players: “They’re just doing their job and working hard and doing what they need to do.” Ellen Palya delivered another gem of a performance in the circle, striking out 8 batters and holding the Indians to one hit outside of an explosive inning for Powhatan in the top

De Weese on her next at-bat slammed a double to the right field fence in the sixth, but the pinch runner was left on second as the Hawks, sparked by Addison Walter snatching the lineout at second base, retired three straight batters. An outfield error on a flyball launched by Thorne grew Hanover’s lead to four runs going into the final half-inning. Rohr is looking forward to Thursday being a “lot of fun” with county rival and sixthseeded Patrick Henry coming to the Hawks’ field to play for the Region 4B championship at 6 p.m. The two teams split this year’s regular season series, with Hanover winning the March 28 game 4-0 and the Patriots taking the May 3 contest 5-4. “I think the girls are excited about it,” Rohr said. “It should be a good atmosphere here.” Nicholas Vandeloecht is sports editor of Powhatan Today and Goochland Gazette.
