HPE president Bill Callahan, left, and HEA president Gene Matthews presented a list of priorities for consideration during the upcoming budget process. Superintendent Michael Gill will present the FY21 budget at 6 p.m. on Jan. 21 at the Central Office. The School Board will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Jan. 14.
Collette resigns as county Republican party chairman By Melody Kinser Managing Editor HANOVER – Nick Collette, who stepped into the office of chairman of the Hanover Republican Committee in June, submitted his resignation on Dec. 28, noting, “2019 has been a challenging year for our committee.” “A couple of weeks ago,” he said, “the final appeal regarding Hanover County was
withdrawn, finally allowing Hanover Republicans to get back on track and focus on winning, just like we did this past November when we reelected our Republican leaders countywide. His resignation was immediate, but he did say, “I believe it is now time for me to step aside and let someone else prepare to take the mantle of chairman see COLLETTE, pg. 5
ASHLAND -- Although budget planning and preparation is a year-long process for Hanover County Public Schools’ administrators, it’s the beginning of the year when the year’s efforts are presented for consideration by the Hanover County School Board. In addition to the regular board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 14, two other budgetrelated sessions are scheduled during the month. Superintendent Michael Gill will present the division’s FY21 budget proposal at 6 p.m. on Jan. 21 followed by a public hearing planned for Jan. 28. The superintendent's recommended budget requires board approval, and adjustments to that proposal are considered during that process. Supervisors for their consideration and approval. Last month, two of the county’s professional teachers’ organizations presented their recommendations to the school board, relying on results from member-submitted surveys that prioritized requests. Hanover Education Association (HEA) president Gene Matthews and Hanover Professional Educators (HPE) president Bill Callahan listed a number of priorities based on results gathered from that survey issued to members of both organizations. As in past years, salaries and compensation topped the list of concerns for county teachers. “Overwhelmingly, our HEA and HPE members indicated a need to improve salaries as their see BUDGET, pg. 5

Virginia Farm Bureau Legislative Day to focus on political action Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND –– Farmers will step away from the fields and into the statehouse on Jan. 27 to discuss agricultural issues and concerns with legislators during the 2020 Virginia Farm Bureau Federation Legislative Day. This year’s theme is Farmers In Action to emphasize the importance of farmers being politically active. Pittsylvania County farmer Kristal Harris said putting a human face on the issues affecting Virginia’s agricultural community means lawmakers can make decisions informed by real
relationships. Harris has participated in VFBF Legislative Day the past few years. “You have to go and tell your story, because you’re the expert, Harris said. Her first-generation farming family produces flue-cured tobacco, small grains, hemp, beef cattle and poultry. She is the Southside District leader for the VFBF Women’s Leadership Committee. “It’s all about opening the lines of communication, she said. “What a phenomenal experience to go up and speak to your legislator one-on-one, to be able to tell them how you feel, and how a change will affect my family, my
farm operation, help me or hurt me — it puts a face on it. VFBF governmental relations staff coordinates group meetings with legislators for the annual Legislative Day but encourage farmers to extend relationships past the one event. Harris said she and her husband have built strong, personal relationships with lawmakers and staff representing their home district, and urban districts too. “It’s nice to build a relationship with someone not so strongly knowledgeable about agriculture, she said. “You become a resource for them as well. Among the issues important to farmers in
2020, the mandatory conservation requirements of the Phase III Watershed Implementation Plan, or WIP III, takes priority. Farm Bureau also will advocate for funding of the Agricultural Best Management Practices program, increased funding to retain Virginia Cooperative Extension agents, and the ability to use crop protectants. “It’s critical that farmers reach out to legislators, whether it's through face-to-face visits, emails or phone calls, said Kelly Roberts, VFBF assistant director of member engagement. “Hearing directly from farmers on how an issue could impact their operation could greatly affect how a legislator votes on a bill.

overreaching goal, Matthews told board members at the Dec. 10 meeting. “Therefore, we ask for a minimum 3% pay raise for all school board employees. Teachers also requested relief from continued salary compression issues and requested extra compensation be paid to teachers on the steps in the 10- to 25-year range of the salary scale. “Both HEA and HPE members indicated that fixing salary compression for experienced teachers and continuing the movement to linear scale should be a priority for the school board, Matthews said. Also high on the priority wish list is a request for the system to absorb the rising costs of health insurance and VRS (Virginia Retirement System) retirement. Matthews acknowledged that neither the school board or board of supervisors can
control rising insurance costs, and said the two associations are willing participants in the search for solutions. “We stand ready to work with Hanover’s governing bodies to educate our members in ways of containing the costs of health insurance,â€? Matthews said. “We see this as everyone’s responsibility.â€? A majority of members listed the need for additional planning time, and requests that stipends be paid when teachers are forced to give up planning time to relieve other teachers. Both associations requested the restoration of 30-minute lunch periods at all elementary schools, and middle school agricultural vocational agriculture teachers be placed on 10½-month contracts. The groups also requested a stipend for teachers associated with the Advanced College Academy, and an additional 3% salary increase for teaching assistants.
Callahan said his organization also polled its members employed as bus drivers. “They listed VRS membership and the right to purchase health insurance at the full time rate as their first and second priorities, but the vote was very close, Callahan said. Matthews told board members the survey did not address scheduling for high school teachers, but noted continuing concerns regarding the current schedule blocks. In the additional comments section of the survey, “a large number of our members asked the board to consider alternatives to the present high school schedule. Other work/life balance issues included the increasing number of after-school meetings, standardized test proctoring, and growing amounts of paperwork. “At least some of these factors can be addressed without impacting the budget, Matthews said.

going into what is sure to be the most critical election of our lifetime in 2020. This decision does not come easily, and I have truly enjoyed working with each and every single one of you over the course of the past year. According to Collette, a mass meeting will be scheduled in the spring to elect a new chairman. “Stepping aside now allows for those who are interested in running for chair to make their intentions known and prepare for what is likely to be a contested mass meeting, he added. He said the decision “does not come lightly for me. While I will continue to work on electing Republicans in 2020 and beyond, I must now turn my focus to my family and growing my business. I am blessed, but I also now know how critical it is to never let anything, especially politics, get in the way of what’s truly important in life.

Twenty years later -- and we’re still here
‘Compromise’ involves both sides of issue
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ec. 31, 1999, wasn’t an ordinary New Year’s Eve. It was ominous in that there were two looming scenarios: 1) the world was going to end, and 2) computer systems would crash, causing massive outages in how we operated, especially in our workplaces at that time. I don’t remember who came up with the term Y2K but it was probably the most used word of 1999. I was already past the era of any big New Year’s Eve festivities attracting me out into the night to welcome another year. But, as 2000 approached, there was an uneasiness about what would happen when the clock struck midnight. The only preparations I made were work-

related with four copies of our system’s operations on either CDs or zip drives (remember those?). The publisher, production manager, a safe deposit at the bank our newspaper company used, and I had those copies. Sidebar: They were updated when our country was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001. I was editor of a daily newspaper 30 miles south of my hometown, so I told Mom I’d come spend the night with her -- and we’d see what, if anything, happened at midnight. It didn’t seem like it had been that long that my party nights began between 10 and 11 p.m. In 1999, it was a struggle to stay awake until midnight. But we were determined. We watched one of the New Year’s Eve TV shows while listening to the hoopla heading into the ball drop countdown from New York City.
So here we were in the house in which I was raised waiting to see what the new year would bring. Or would it end? Midnight comes and goes. We were still in her living room watching TV; the world had not ended; and there were no reports of major computer crashes. Throughout 1999, the airwaves had brought Prince’s “1999” out so we could “party like it was 1999.” Actually, the lyrics follow the “end is near” theme. Nonetheless, the song, released in 1982, was an anthem of sorts -- or so it seemed. New Year’s Eve is comical to family and friends in my age range. The joke going around heading into 2020 was “9 p.m. is the new midnight.” In my case, that was accurate. Twenty years -- wow, and we’re still here. Make the most of this new decade.
Christmas memory: A hill and a sled I won’t forget By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist It’s funny how some memories of Christmas remain in our minds, crystal clear in its detail; while others fall into the category of who knows where I was or what I was doing. That doesn’t mean those occasions weren’t festive and rewarding, they just didn’t make that imprint in our psyche that
some others did. Throughout the years, I’ve written about many of those most memorable Christmas days of my life. Oddly, I’ve rarely described the Christmas that I’ll remember for a lifetime, a memory that always makes me appreciate my family more at this time of year. It’s a time of year that is always tinged with an unfilled void and a sense of sorrow not just for one

of two seasons, but for a lifetime. Unfortunately, the holiday season also is a time of increased mortality and that group of survivors who have experienced a death in the family at Christmas are unwilling members of a lifelong society who will always see the holidays through a different lens. But, for some unknown reason, this holiday brought back memories of a different Christmas, one year after
my father’s death. Our small family gathered up our presents and headed to Grandma’s house for the holiday. Realizing it would be a tough anniversary, all of us thought it best to be surrounded by the comfort of a loving family. In a recent letter to the editor, Pattie P. Bland mentions that "compromise" ought to be part of the discussion regarding the debate over firearms and sanctuary counties. Sure, I agree with those noble and lofty sentiments -- as do most other rational people. The problem, though, is that a true compromise involves two “sides” giving up something in order to make a deal that generally benefits everybody. We on the pro-2nd Amendment side are always the ones who are expected to "give up" something to the anti-gun people every time something happens -- but they never give up anything at all. First, it is scary-looking rifles and "ugly" accessories, then ordinary magazines that happen to hold more than 10 rounds and then they will want to eventually ban most semi-automatic pistols. Down the road, they'll go after lever-action rifles, shotguns and perhaps revolvers. Of course, self-defense rights will be attacked and the leftists will demand that we "compromise" on places where concealed-carry is allowed -- even though people who have carry permits are among the most law-abiding citizens anywhere. Furthermore, they will expect us to submit to mandatory registration schemes, while calling it a "universal" background check -- and we all know that criminals will never obey any such requirements. Making instant felons out of fathers handing down to their sons an heirloom rifle or mothers passing on a self-defense pistol to their daughters is not compromise. It is tyrannical idiocy. Compromise? Not at all, especially when the wannabe tyrants are not giving up anything at all -- while they see LETTERS, pg. 8

my dad. It was a cold and gray Christmas Eve as I strolled around the large yards on all sides of the house. I poked my
head in the many outbuildings, but one my grandmother called the meat house caught my attention. It had long since surrendered its meat-curing purpose and now housed an untidy collection of old furniture and trunks.

Hanging on one of those poorly lit walls, I glared at a familiar sight, the shape of a sled hanging on a wooden peg, probably resting there for decades when some other young boy hung it after a run on the hill at the high school. I asked my Uncle about the sled, and he said it had been hanging out there as long as he could remember, but encouraged me to take it down and use it if and when the weather cooperated. I carried the musty smelling sled to the back porch that ran the length of the rear of the house, and wiped off years of dust with a damp cloth. What lay beneath was a Flexible Flyer Americana, runners in perfect shape and the wood darkened and many times soaked with oil to preserve its integrity. It was as perfect as the one my father had given his kids not so many Christmases ago. It
somehow reminded me of him, of the many sledding adventures we had enjoyed, moments not realized at the time for their importance or fleeting nature. The best thing about spending Christmas in Gaithersburg was the increased chance of waking up to about a foot of snow. The then small town was located in the notorious snow belt of western Maryland, a region that received record snows each winter. And, that’s how it happened as I awoke the first Christmas morning following the saddest one of my life. As we opened gifts and enjoyed a big Christmas breakfast, I wasn’t thinking of all the nice gifts I had received, but instead wondering when I could excuse myself and give that Flexible Flyers a proper test. My mother patiently clasped the seemingly endless clamps on black boots that
smelled like retreads, made much more difficult by the endless number of socks she had required. The new piece of rope provided sharp contrast to the darkened wood sled, and the Flexible Flyer logo barely visible under tons of lacquer and wood oil. The hill at the high school was packed with kids trying out new toys just received, and the hill was smooth and fast coated with a tiny coat of ice on the surface. The old Flexi didn’t disappoint, and flying down that large hill somehow reminded, renewed and refreshed me. Somehow, that old sled made me feel like the kid who had just received the best gift ever. It was almost dark as the flurries transformed to flakes. The walk home almost dream like with big Christmas lights reflecting off the white surface,
and the snowy dark sky as a backdrop. I walked down the unplowed streets, the sled following like a loyal dog and skimming across the quickly freezing snow with no effort. As I climbed the hill to my grandmother’s house, I remember thinking what a great Christmas Day this had been. And that old sled accompanied me on many runs in various locations, and always reminded me that some things in life have the power to provide joy if only in limited doses; but the impact they have last a lifetime. Sixty years later, I still think of my Dad almost every day, and, Yes, Christmas Eve still makes me melancholy., but it only lasts a second as I remember what I had, what I have, and just what good fortune can come in the oddest of forms, like that old worn sled.

America needs a president for the people
also need money now: the homeless, those living below poverty, the hungry, health plans that give everyone on low incomes the basic need for health free or low cost. Come on, America, wake up. Donald Trump has gotten fat and an orange face from tanning and hair that needs trimming in the back (front is OK). He is self-absorbed. We need a new president who has the interests of the people of America. Joan Austen Mechanicsville
I’ve had family here since the 1950s and we had Forest Lake Hills and that was all there was. Route 301 was a two-lane road I can go on and on. I consider where you reside as a johnny-come-lately no different than this Wegmans thing. I have never consumed space in a subdivision, but I have been here since 1962 when there was one traffic light in the entire county. Hanover County is becoming a disaster area for development and the definition if anybody wants to know of progress is the absolute destruction of a lifestyle while the developers just run off with the money and laugh at us sitting in traffic. I have spent decades watching it happen, and Foxhead is one of those devastations of a lifestyle. It’s not going to end, Ms. Messina. Tax dollars are needed so

Let’s make America great again. It’s time to change that quote because those were the “good” old days. It’s like new parents saying we'll be glad to get back to normal pre-pregnancy days. They will never get back to those days. They must make a new start to be responsible for the care, love and safety of their child for at least the next 18 years. It is a very difficult adjustment. It’s likewise for the USA. A quote was “The Business of America is Business.” Now it should be “Wake up America. The Business of America is its People.” The USA is gazillions in debt, should declare bankruptcy. They must not lend or give money to the rest of the world (that does need money) but should give that money to the people of the USA who

Don retired in 1997 and was installed as Pastor Emeritus by the Mechanicsville Church in 1998. After retirement, he was Pastor at Mattaponi Indian Baptist Church until age 74. Don’s love for people was evidenced by his fervent ministry which extended far beyond his congregation. Don cried with the hurting and celebrated with them in their joy. He loved meeting and greeting people wherever he went. Even in the midst of dementia, he demonstrated his love for people by praying with them and invoking God’s blessings. Pocahontas Chapter presenting one of city’s first environmentalists
MEMORIES ARE FOREVER
Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND – Join the Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society on Thursday, Jan. 9, to learn from Anne Wright about one of Richmond's first environmentalists, Newton Ancarrow, who documented wildflowers and other plants in the James River Park System. Ancarrow’s photographic collection of 35,000 slides is housed at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. This presentation focuses on both Ancarrow's story and the digital wildflower archive that has been developed to preserve his work. Finally, Wright will describe the continuing efforts to locate and record the number of species that are still present in the park today. This free meeting is open to the public and starts at 7 p.m. in the Kelly Education Center of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden at 1800 Lakeside Ave. in Richmond. The room is available at 6:30 p.m. so you can come early and get to know others
with similar interests. A short business meeting will follow the presentation. Wright directs Outreach for the VCU Life Sciences and Center for Environmental Studies and is an Assistant Professor in the VCU Biology Department. She has a background in aquatic and stream ecology, benthic macroinvertebrates, and water quality monitoring. In 2013, she began developing Science in the Park, a website of science-based explorations of the natural resources, plants, and animals in the James River Park System in Richmond. The Pocahontas Chapter is one of 12 Virginia Native Plant Society chapters, and serves the counties of Hanover, Amelia, Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Henrico, King

RICHMOND — Virtually all of Virginia’s 1.3 million public school students now attend schools that meet or exceed the Federal Communications Commission’s standard for internet access, according to the non-profit organization EducationSuperHighway’s latest state connectivity snapshot. “High speed internet access is critical to prepare students for postsecondary education and to take advantage of high-tech employment opportunities in the coming decade,” Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane said. “But technology does not stand still, and we will continue to collaborate with leaders in
the public and private sectors to ensure that all students — whether in school or at home — can benefit from ever-evolving digital-learning opportunities.” In 2015, only about 46% of Virginia students attended schools meeting the FCC’s short-term goal of providing at least 100 Kbps per student, which is considered the minimum bandwidth necessary to support a 1-to-1 device-to-student ratio and digital learning. EducationSuperHighway credits the leadership of Governor Ralph Northam and the Virginia Department of Education’s K-12 Learning Infrastructure Program for the expansion of broadband access since 2015.

ity of family caregivers have indicated that they turn to the internet and consumer reviews when narrowing their options among senior living communities in their area, and have relied on these perspectives as much as or more so than in-person recommendations from geriatric professionals or medical personnel. Originally published in January 2012 — as the first of its kind — the Caring Stars annual list has become the goguide of the best senior living communities nation-wide, and particularly helpful after families gather for the holidays and discover increased or urgent senior care needs for their aging parents or grandparents. To be considered for the award, Caring Stars communities met a set of criteria based on ratings and reviews from senior living residents and their family members. Caring.com senior care experts also conducted a reviews-integrity audit and took other quality-assurance measures before determining the Caring Stars of 2020. “Congratulations to Heritage Green of Hanover for being among these high-rated

we can build more schools and many other things because of so much influx of people. They come here and they expect the same services they see in Henrico and Chesterfield. Our local job and our state leadership’s job is to bring tax dollars in from wherever they can find it. We have one area that I find development a good idea that’s right along Route 1 and Interstate 95, and there was a lot of talk of doing an outlet store concept like is in North Carolina along I-95, but that has failed for the most part . What was the internet and all so we welcome Wegmans not exactly in that area. I wish them to find a spot closer to 95 like in the area of Bass Pro Shops would be ideal. Then come on in; we need the taxes but not where this is. It’s a disgrace to put Wegmans there but those that have moved here later after all this development got off the ground into one of these huge subdivisions causing more space to be taken up than Wegmans, well, really shouldn’t say a whole lot. There was a time when almost all the students in the schools lived on a farm and that was the 1960s. I do not think any large subdivision dwellers -- although all of you are a wonderfully nice good people -- should have any right to speak against anything similar to what you moved into, causing the same amount of damage or more. Larry Johnson Mechanicsville
Happy to live near helpful, happy people My devotion this morning from Jesus Calling stated: “Every day I manifest My grace
in countless places and situations, but the media take no notice. I shower not only blessings but also outright miracles on your planet.” I needed to write to you earlier, but then I thought for a new year this miracle may touch more people. On Dec. 11, my husband and I lost both our dog and my husband’s wallet. Having moved from a farm in Goochland County to an active senior community in Mechanicsville was difficult for our almost 9-year-old dog. She escaped once and Hanover Animal Control brought her home. We thought maybe she was trying to get back to her old home. In our search for her, my husband lost his wallet. Canceling credit cards is easy, but getting a new driver’s license can be a hassle. We were fortunate to have an animal lover, Debbie Peak, drive down Bell Creek Road. She saw our dog and knew the dog would probably get hit by the cars driving by. She actually turned her car around and drove back. She took our dog straight to Ashland to the animal shelter. I had gone back home to call Animal Control and my call was forwarded to the shelter. As I was describing our runaway, the woman on the phone said, “I think your dog just came in.” After I told her the dog’s name was Fancy, she confirmed they had our dog. Debbie Peak even volunteered to bring her back to us. When Debbie came into our home with Fancy, she would not even take a reward. She opened her jacket to show she had on a “Tommie the dog” t-shirt. You will recall Tommie was the dog terribly burned and killed. Debbie has two cats -- not even a dog. We were very grateful to
this first angel of the day. We went back through nearby neighborhoods to look for my husband’s wallet, to no avail. We then had to run an errand. When we returned, there was a voicemail from our neighbor saying a gentleman had come knocking on our door looking for my husband. Our neighbor said we obviously weren’t home and asked if he could be of help. The gentleman said he had found my husband’s wallet and wanted to return it. He left the wallet and his card with our neighbor. My husband called our second angel, Christopher Verlander, who wouldn’t take a reward or even an offer for lunch or dinner. Since he is a contractor, he asked that my husband give his name and number to anyone needing a general contractor. We can vouch for his honesty and hope people will consider him for a residential job. We are so glad to be living in an area that has such helpful, honest people. There are no coincidences. God is at work through His people in the world, especially here in Mechanicsville. Happy New Year! Betsy and Preston Young Mechanicsville
Classic NIMBY on Distribution Center plan The “press release” by Karri Messina of Fox Head, while well intended, is typical of many citizens who are ill-informed of the history of Hanover County, lack basic comprehension of economic development and governance in Virginia. Allow me to make the following points: The subject property was rezoned in 1995, before there was even a Fox Head subdivision. Homes can physically
be built anywhere. Manufacturing, assembly and distribution facilities can’t be built just anywhere. Location, workforce, utilities, roads, taxes and how receptive is the community are but a few of the issues evaluated in locating a facility. Hanover has a targeted growth rate of 2.0% annually, far more modest than Chesterfield and Henrico have experienced. Hanover does not provide utility service to the whole of the county, unlike Henrico and Chesterfield … but has designated only parts of the county for such service which must include residential, commercial and industrial areas. Hanover consequently has protected it’s rural nature, farming history and bridled it’s growth based on it’s Comprehensive Plan. The Hanover County Board of Supervisors is to be commended for its support of the Comprehensive Plan; otherwise, there would be the potential of development of all kinds, anywhere and everywhere in the county. It has been the goal of the county to provide a 70/30 residential/non-residential tax base to provide stability in the tax rates while addressing the needs of its citizens. When was the last time the tax rate rose? The county government (unlike Henrico) does not maintain or provide most of the funding for roads … the state does. The state never has enough money for road building and consequently, only builds roads long after the need is evident, not before. The Rutland Shopping Center was not the cause for the $20 million road improvement on Atlee Station Road … that project had been forecasted on the Comp Plan for 20 years, even before there was a Rutland Center. The Rutland Center ultimately paid for a portion of the road extension. Road access is a key factor for a distribution center.
Locating between two interstate interchanges is ideal. If you want to enjoy trees you do not own, then locate beside a Recreational Park, not an Industrial Park … you can find those on the Comp Pan too. This Distribution Center will have 25 acres under roof + loading/unloading areas + parking + expansion plans + stormwater retention + buffers. You can’t just put something this massive just anywhere. The center will likely operate 24/7, which means its impact on peak traffic will likely be less than the 300 homes in the Fox Head subdivision. Speaking of workers. When was the last time you were in a state-of-theart distribution center? They are very sophisticated, highly automated and require particular skill sets from employees to operate and manage them. No, they aren’t nuclear scientists, but they aren’t minimum wage workers either. The jobs being created will pay wages and salaries significantly above
minimum wage and significantly higher than the regional median income. There is a good chance some of the cars in your daily commute won’t be leaving the county to work but staying here where they live, joining other distributions centers such as Amazon, Vitamin Shoppe, Supervalu and Virginia ABC Warehouse. Hanover has worked very hard not to become a bedroom community. Unfortunately, there have been many beds filled with folks who don’t appreciate the struggle or understand the battle (competition) and can’t see beyond their back yard. The problem is not about the effort of the county but the lack of comprehension of the citizen. Kudos to all who made this site selection happen, especially the economic development team, county administration and the board of supervisors … they could have put houses there but preserved this valusee LETTERS, pg. 21

Hanover-Caroline SWCD recognizes conservation practices within district At its fall Conservation Awards Banquet, the Hanover-Caroline Soil and Water Conservation District was honored to name three 2019 awardees for their outstanding conservation practices. Recipients and their honors were Allen and Brenda Tignor, the Clean Water Farm Award; Dennis and Jill Thompson’s Savanna Watch, BMP Forestry Award; and the Lake Caroline Property Owners Association, the Urban Conservation Award. Located in the small community of Tignor, Virginia, is the successful fourth generation farming operation of Allen
and Brenda Tignor, who implement an array of best management practices (BMPs) to eliminate nutrient and sediment pollution in Virginia waterways. The Tignors’ operation includes Black Angus and Simmental cattle, 1.350 acres of cropland, 20 acres of hay and 60 acres of pasture. The Tignors have embraced the concept of rotational grazing, moving cattle herds regularly to maximize the quality and quantity of forage growth. They also have created more than 67 acres of riparian buffers, generally more than 100 feet wide, excluding their cattle from more than a mile of streams. In addition to water quality measures on pastureland, the Tignors plant multi-

will be ignored by the very ones who should see it. The way that Hanover County is being mutilated by those who profess to love and care for the county but who only see the tax base at the expense of so much else -- the natural environment, the history and the beauty of this place is sickening. For many years, one repeated phrase by the powers-thatbe is “tax base”. Yes, the tax base is vital to the county but the things that make Hanover so special are being sold off to the highest bidder -- and that breaks my heart. Sandra Shirey Ashland

His head coach, Josh Merkel, thinks it may be something else. “He’s got great vision, and the ball is on a string, so he’s very confident,” Merkel said of the junior point guard. “He’s played a ton of basketball, and his whole career, he’s looked to get others involved.” In the opening round of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Tourney, Anthony quietly led his band of Yellow Jackets while registering the second tripledouble in program history with 16 points, 10 assists and a career-high 11 rebounds in a 94-56 win over Lebanon Valley, a game controlled by RandolphMacon from the start. Anthony was one of five Yellow Jackets to score in double figures, as the team dished out 25 assists total and hit 19 3-point shots en route to their tenth straight win. Anthony was in the thick of it again in the championship game against Rowan that Monday, scoring 26 points and getting six rebounds and six assists in a 73-66 victory over the Profs. His presence – almost

always where the action is most intense – sometimes makes the extent of his contribution hard to notice until the final box score arrives. But it’s not something he forces, as in his tripledouble performance in Macon’s tournament opener. “Yesterday was awesome. My guys were shooting it great. I was coming down the court and kicking it out every time, then they started making shots and I started making easy layups,” Anthony said. “Coach [Merkel] talks to me a lot, ‘Just try to let the game to you, don’t try to force too much.’ I think that’s definitely when I’m at my best. Just let the ball move – it’s fun. It’s a lot of fun to play when we’re in that mindset.” It may have been fun, but it wasn’t easy. Rowan (5-6) led by as much as 9 in the first half before the Yellow Jackets closed the gap and finally took the lead with a second left in the first half on a 3-point shot by Josh Talbert. Randolph-Macon could not keep the Profs down the second half. While the Yellow Jackets (11-0) led most of the half, Rowan stayed within striking distance and regained the lead 61-60 on a 3-pointer by Connor Dickerson with 3:07 left in the game. Anthony sank a pair of free throws with 2:19 left to put Randolph-Macon back on top,

R-MC women catch breath, beat Hornets ing out party,” Ross said. “I told her before the game, just play the game you’re used to playing. You got recruited to RandolphMacon for a reason. You are a starting point guard. Head Coach Carroll LaHaye was pleased as well. “I thought tonight was the best game I’ve seen her play in her two years here,” LaHaye said of Hatfield. “We knew what she was capable of doing it, but none of us had seen it. We’d been in her ear, trying to get this game in place for us. She was dialed in and knew exactly what she was capable of doing.” Williams was a rebound shy of a double-double against Lynchburg with 17 points and nine rebounds. On Saturday, against surprising Hollins College, Williams got the double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, much needed in a nip-and-tuck 61-51 road win that places the Yellow Jackets at 3-2 in ODAC play and 4-6 overall. Randolph-Macon looks at the conference standings, finds themselves in a four-way tie for fifth at with that 3-2 mark. Guilford, also at 3-2, comes to Crenshaw Saturday for a 4:30 game. For Ross and her teammates, the quest for a perfect January continues. “Our bench is stepping up. Our starting five is stepping up. We’re gelling,” Ross noted. By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – The Randolph-Macon women’s basketball team last left the court on Dec. 7, achingly close to an upset win at Christopher Newport. Their next game would not be for 27 days. Thus began a holiday journey different from most, as in practice, by group text, and on their own, the team whose 2-6 record doesn’t reflect their assembled talent, began a corporate countdown to their Thursday night at Crenshaw Gymnasium. As their perennial Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Lynchburg came to town, both teams needed a win in an ODAC race turned upside down so far this season. “After we left CNU, we made that our turnaround point,” explained senior forward Michal Ross, who led Randolph-Macon with 22 points in its 75-53 win over the Hornets. “We have a mission in January to go undefeated, so we just take it one day at a time. We’re not used to being 2-6.” The Yellow Jackets took control early, scoring 8 of the game’s first 10 points, then weathering one of a few Lynchburg storms to lead 18-15 after a quarter. In the second quarter, with Charlotte Woods saddled with two fouls, Ross was fouled with 4:20 left. She made a pair of free throws to begin a 9-2 run over the next three minutes for a 36-24 advantage. The Hornets caught fire just before halftime, cutting their deficit at halftime to nine at 38-29. Midway through the third period, on a play that was a microcosm of how well the Yellow Jackets played, Ross and senior Kelly Williams participated in a vintage give and

King William girls, Thomas Dale boys win at L-D By Rodney Robinson For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – North Stafford looked on the way to victory in the girls final of the Lee-Davis Southerner Classic on Dec. 28 after Makayla Johnson converted the free throw on an and-1 layup to tie King William at 51. The momentum had been building in the Wolverines’ favor and their supporters sensed victory. But the Cavaliers’ weren’t finished. After a layup from Allie Patterson to put King William up by 2, the Cavaliers regained the ball after a missed free throw from North Stafford. Patterson drove the ball down the floor and through contact for a basket to put the game away as King William held on to win the girls title 55-51. “Playing the game [yesterday] kind of slowed them down a little bit,” King William head coach Kerry Johnson said of his team. “It was two grueling games, so I think a little fatigue set in on them especially near the end.” North Stafford got off to a quick start early in the first quarter and ended the frame on an 8-0 run that pushed the Wolverines’ lead to 14-7. Early on, North Stafford’s size seemed too much for the Cavaliers. But King William slowed North Stafford in the second quarter with strong defensive pressure, outscoring the Wolverines 11-6. In the second half the teams repeatedly swapped the lead. “I think we were nervous, and things just wasn’t flowing,” Johnson said. “We weren’t talking on defense. So, once we adjusted to how they were playing, then we kind of turned things around a little bit.” Patterson led King William with 14 points, with 9 of her points coming in the second

behind to beat Cosby 52-48. Cosby opened the second half with a 7-0 run that extended its lead to 13 points. The Titan faithful cheered, with a belief that their team had taken control of the game.
But Thomas Dale had other plans. Down 31-18 in the third quarter, the Knights outscored Cosby 14-3 to close out the quarter. Thomas Dale carried the momentum over into the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run. The Knights, having taken the lead, never yielded it after their surge through the middle of the final frame. “I didn’t like our effort in the first half nor the beginning of the third quarter,” said Thomas Dale head coach Keyode Rogers. “So I just wanted to pick up our effort.” Through the first two quarters, both teams were evenly matched. Cosby managed to go into the half with a 6-point lead. The second half was full of runs by both teams. Cosby got it started, with a 7-0 run to start the third quarter. Thomas Dale answered with its run to close out the quarter – which proved to be the turning point in the game. From the start of their run, the Knights outscored Cosby 34-to-16. “We really didn’t change anything,” Rogers said. “We ran a couple more sets than we wanted to but it was really about heart, effort and teamwork.” Lee Davis fared well in the tournament also. In the first game of the tournament, Lee Davis fell to Thomas Dale 82-63. Lee Davis bounced back in the consolation final against Colonial Heights, 58-43. Junior guard Eli Lewis took home first-team all-tournament honors on Saturday, performing at a high level during the two games. The Lee Davis boys will look to bounce back Friday as the Confederates host crosstown rival Atlee at 7:30 p.m. Rodney Robinson can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.
Supporting cast steps up in Atlee comeback win By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Down once by 9 points shortly before halftime, things weren’t looking good early for Atlee’s boys basketball team in its early return from winter break Friday night as it hosted fellow Class 5 member North Stafford. Some shots weren’t falling, leader Tyler Warren was hampered by two fouls called early in the second period. Warren had just 7 points when the teams went to the locker rooms at intermission, the Wolverines ahead 31-25. But those who feel Atlee is comprised of Warren and an unknown band of supporting actors haven’t witnessed the Raiders play this season. Enter Will Sutkus. Sutkus’ overall play, which included 12 points after halftime, helped finally slow down and, at times, befuddle, the North Stafford offense, opening the door for the Raiders in a come-from-behind 64-59 victory to improve their record to 4-5 at a critical juncture of the regular season. “He’s not very tall, but he’s quick and pretty physical for his size,” said Atlee head coach Rally Axselle. “The interesting

but Austin Kearney’s layup at the 1:46 mark again put Rowan on top. That lead would last just 21 seconds thanks to Corey Bays, who hit a jump shot to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good. He then got a steal and passed it to Miles Mallory, who hit the layup to give Randolph-Macon a 66-63 lead with 1:02 left. The Profs began to foul, but Terry Woods and Ian

thing about him was he missed the Jaguar Jamboree with the flu. I didn’t even see him for a week. He came back to practice this week. He can play defense and make shots. It was great to have him back.” Axselle was mindful of
Sutkus’ condition, questioning himself as to how much to play him, not wanting to risk any relapse in his continued recovery. If Sutkus felt any adverse effects of his recent illness, he’d never let you see it on his face.
In the second half, the Raiders switched defenses for a time, utilizing a half-court trap that finally put a fly in the ointment of a North Stafford offense which had pretty much handled everything else the Atlee defense had tried to that
Robertson’s free-throw shooting kept the Yellow Jackets ahead. Mallory finished with 10 points and six rebounds and Robertson finished with 9 points and seven rebounds in the tournament final. Rowan was led by a double-double performance from Kearney, who finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Three other Profs finished in doublefigures. Dickerson topped the Profs with 15 points, while Jerry Price and Maliq Sanders finished with 10 apiece. With Saturday’s 93-60 Old
Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win at Emory and Henry, the Yellow Jackets, now 4-0 in conference, 12-0 overall, turn their sights to Fredericksburg, and a nonconference test at an always tough Mary Washington on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com. point. Before that decision was made, however, some selfinflicted wounds hurt their cause, like back-to-back turnovers that helped the Wolverines up their lead to 37-29 with 2:41 left in the third period. But a Sutkus trey and a Gavin Bralley free throw helped cut the deficit to four at 39-35 entering the final quarter. The turning point offensively was when Sutkus was fouled attempting a 3-point shot early in the fourth. Will connected on all three free throws to cut the Wolverines’ lead to 41-38. Just over two minutes later, Drew Hollins nailed a critical triple to tie the game at 46. An immediate Wolverine turnover saw Warren feed a breaking Nick Conway, whose layup gave Atlee a 48-46 lead with 4:22 left. Conway returned the favor to Warren, stealing the ball just over a minute later, zipping it to Warren heading to the basket to break another tie. It was Atlee 52-50 with 3:01 left. The Wolverines turned to full court pressure, got a steal, but their shot in transition missed. The Raiders responded with a triple, and a steal of their own. From then on, North Stafford never got closer than 3 points, as
Sutkus swiped the ball from the Wolverines with 1:20 left, feeding Rival Axselle for a basket to make it 60-53. Warren had 14 points for Atlee, while Sutkus had 12 and Hollins added 11. Five other Raiders scored, a critical factor in being able to launch the comeback. Warren played a majority of the second half with three fouls. With J.R. Tucker, a Region 5B rival, coming to Atlee Wednesday night and a trip to archrival Lee-Davis looming on Friday, the race for the playoffs has begun. This season, 10 teams in the region will make the postseason, an increase of two from the past two seasons. However, instead of 15 member schools, now there are 17 – more teams to deal with even with more invitations to play in later in February. Coach Axselle already knows one area which must improve immediately. “North Stafford wasn’t huge, but they outrebounded us,” Axselle noted. “We’ve got to be able to rebound against athleticism. We’ve got to do a better job for sure.” Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
