Venus is the sole naked eye planet in early evening skies. It reaches its greatest eastern elongation on the 24th. Look for it high to the southwest after sunset – it sets around 11 pm. Mars and Jupiter rise to the southeast around 4 am, followed an hour later by Saturn. They will appear to bunch up later in the month and should be a good show in predawn twilight. Mercury reaches its greatest western elongation on the 23rd but the ecliptic plane makes such a shallow angle with the horizon that it barely rises to the east southeast before the sun.
An overhead look at mid-March, a few hours after sunset, reveals a mostly empty sky at zenith. The likely unfamiliar constellations of Lynx and Leo Minor are in that direction, but there are no bright stars to grab your attention. Brighter and more familiar asterisms lay tens of
The Mechanicsville Local February 26, 2020 17 degrees below zenith. Gemini is high (about 70 degrees) to the southwest, marked by the “twins” Castor and Pollux. Below Gemini we bid farewell to Orion and all the familiar bright stars in that constellation and those around it. To the south-southeast we find the sickle shape of Leo, with bright blue Regulus. Ursa Major (including the Big Dipper asterism) is high to the northeast, and Capella marks the constellation Auriga to the northwest.

Raider wrestlers prevail in Hanover quad
By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local
MECHANICSVILLE – Match after match, cheer after cheer, it became increasingly clear Wednesday night at the annual county wrestling quad that Atlee wrestling is for real. The Raiders completed a sweep of their county brethren, defeating Lee-Davis 48-30, Hanover 46-31, and Patrick Henry 51-18.
“We were a little banged up. This time in the season can be rough,” said Atlee head coach Gabe Lavey, who had three starters unavailable for the meet. “But we had kids to step up. Ryan Blostac stepped up, got two victories.”
For Blostac, it’s his first varsity season. The ability to create such depth is, many times in wrestling, the difference between being able to make a deep postseason run, and not. Atlee’s dual with Hanover started well, but wins for Jack Epperly, Christopher Halsey, Simon Siler and Sean Klump gave Hanover a 31-12 lead. But the Raiders won the final six matches, led by pins from James Haynie, Evan Buchanan and Alex Frowert that sent the Raiders surging ahead for the victory.
The Hawks went 1-2 on the night, defeating Patrick Henry 51-26 while falling to host LeeDavis 46-32. Head coach Jason Smith, while hoping to earn victories, is looking at the bigger picture.
“It’s an exciting rivalry. It hurts a little bit coming up short to Lee-Davis and to Atlee,” Smith explained. “Wrestling is a difficult sport. It takes a while to get the hang of it. We’re constantly working to get better, and we’re moving in the right direction. Come regional tournament, I think we’ll be okay.”
Dave Lawrence/The Local Top, the referee keeps watch for a pin as Atlee’s Evan Buchanan in his win over Lee-Davis’ Jake Owens in a 138-pound match in the Hanover County Quad Wednesday. Bottom, Lee-Davis heavyweight Andy Aldridge (right) stalks his prey, Atlee’s Noah Jones. Both Buchanan and Aldridge won their matches.
Five Hawks earned pins including Halsey, who was 2-1 on the evening, losing to threetime defending state champion Andy Aldridge at 220 pounds. The Confederates pulled off victories in the final four matches of their dual with Hanover, all

Hall of Fame inductees surprised by honor
By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local
MECHANICSVILLE – Many times, those who are most deserving of honor are the last to realize it.
The overwhelming response to being honored with an induction into the 2020 Class of the Lee-Davis Athletic Hall of Fame was surprise. “Astonished.” “Are you kidding me?” But it was all true, as five graduates, representing five different decades, returned to the place of their academic and athletic glory on Friday night to be honored at a banquet filled with previous inductees, family, friends, great Italian food, and, most importantly, great memories.
For current Lee-Davis teacher and head baseball coach Tyler Johnson, it wasn’t as much a return as it was a night off.
“Usually, I do security at basketball games. I had to pull some strings with the principal to let me off the hook,” Johnson said with a smile.
The 2005 graduate is the all-time leading scorer in LeeDavis basketball history with 1,390 points, holding school
Dave Lawrence/The Local From left, Kara Malloy Gallaher, Brad King, Tyler Johnson, Gerome Lewis and Kelly Heinz Frazier were inducted into the Lee-Davis Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the school Friday. The Class of 2020 brings the total number of inductees to 35.

records for free throws in a career, in a season, and a game. His jersey number, 22, was retired by the school.
“Fifteen years ago? That’s crazy,” Johnson noted, asked about his biggest takeaway from his days as a student. “There was a sense of community, a sense of pride that everybody had playing for Lee-Davis. It was unbelievable for me to come through here.”
For Charles “Brad” King, it was a return to a school totally different in scope from his playing days in the early 1960s. King, a three-sport athlete, lettered three years in football and baseball, was an All-Region football player, and later played at what was then Ferrum Junior College, where he was a part of their 1965 NJCAA national title team.
“It was different. I went to Washington-Henry, and a lot of other people that I played ball with went to Battlefield,” King said, recalling a time when LeeDavis was still a new school, consolidating the student populations of other institutions. “When we merged, we had to

get to know a lot of new people. All of a sudden, you’ve got to learn the mannerisms of other people, that’s tough.”
King was glad to know new people, one in particular.
“If it wasn’t for Lee-Davis, I would have never met my wife,” King said, as Vicki went to Battlefield prior to the opening of Lee-Davis in 1959. Kara Malloy Gallaher’s glory came, many times, all alone, running the race set before her. She won the Central Region championship in cross country in 1986, and three years later, was the Central Region champion in the 1000-meter run in indoor track. She amassed nine region titles overall, but, perhaps, her biggest contribution to Lee-Davis was blazing a new trail.
“When I got to the first practice for cross country in August, I waited around for the team, waited, and then I realized, there weren’t enough girls to field a team,” Gallaher remembered. “Now, I look at the team, and it’s so amazing.” Gallaher ran with the boys. Gerome Lewis was a man among boys. The 1972 graduate earned All-Region and AllMetro honors in football, and also left his mark on the track. Lewis, a veteran of the United States Navy, held the Lee-Davis record for the 400-meter run
for an incredible 44 years.
“When I started playing football, I did not know what a football was,” Lewis recalled, earning a laugh from the audience. “My sister Vanessa told me, the football is the long one that looks like a foot!”
Today, Lewis makes his mark as “G-Rome”, as he is called by his 6-year old grandson, who was in attendance.
Kelly Heinz Frazier is the youngest inductee in the Hall of Fame’s history. From the Class of 2012, Frazier’s work in the softball circle was legendary. One of the best pitchers to ever play in the Richmond area, she helped Lee-Davis make back-to-back Group AAA state championship games in 2010 and 2011, winning the title in their second attempt.
Today, Frazier takes the lessons she learned on the softball team, and applies them in a different way, as a consultant with the government. Whether training or developing, Frazier remembers the lessons learned back in Mechanicsville.
“Consulting is very much like a team sport in that every day is a new challenge. It’s never the same,” Frazier said. “The education I received at LeeDavis, many teachers forced us to think above what our classes were. They taught you how to think.”
The Hall of Fame now numbers 35 inductees.

Patriots get much-needed wins at Lee-Davis
By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local
MECHANICSVILLE – When you have to wait for a lot of your basketball team to finish playing football, it creates one small issue.
Patrick Henry boys basketball had to push back a couple of early games on their schedule while the football team made a run to the Virginia High School League Class 4 state semifinal. Now, with the homestretch of the basketball regular season in sight, the Patriots began a stretch of six games in eight nights Friday in victorious fashion, defeating Lee-Davis 72-48 to sweep the season series from their oldest rival.
Just over 12 hours later, the Patriots outlasted Thomas Jefferson 67-66 at the Monacan Winter Basketball Classic to even their record at 6-6. Jayden Mines repeated a 14-point performance from Friday’s win in Saturday’s triumph, while Tysen Brown registered a double-double logging 19 points and 14 rebounds.
“You know never how teenagers are going to respond to adversity,” said Patrick Henry head boys basketball coach Randy Anderson, as the LeeDavis victory snapped a fourgame losing streak. “They were four tough losses, and I told them you’ve got to keep going. If you want to make a playoff appearance, every game has to mean something.”
Lee-Davis (2-12) held steady with the Patriots early, but Patrick Henry extended a small first quarter lead into double digits in a second period where they held the Confederates to just 9 points. Mines began the second half with a quick 3-pointer to up the score to 39-21, and Lee-Davis never seriously threatened again.
It was widely known that
Dave Lawrence/The Local Patrick Henry’s Tysen Brown (23) gets a shot off despite the defensive efforts of Lee-Davis’ Cody Willett (12) and Cam Eldridge (30) in the Patriots’72-48 win Friday.
Gene Foley, the first-year head coach at Lee-Davis, would have a big challenge ahead. Whether through graduation, transfer or injury, only one player on this Confederates team played varsity basketball last season. Foley takes a long-term approach, and, despite the record, sees improvement, both now, and in the future.
“Every day we come in, everyone is positive, and we keep working hard,” Foley said. “Already we’re able to see when breaking down film, and seeing the stat sheets, we’re seeing the improvement. More rebounds, less turnovers, better free throw shooting. The little improvements that maybe the average fan who doesn’t have access to all the numbers might not see, but we’re seeing it.”
Kwadell McQueen and freshman Jordan Callahan led Lee-Davis with 12 points each. Mines was one of three Patriots in double figures, joined by Aaron Brown and Jordan Morris, who each had 13 points. In the girls varsity matchup, Patrick Henry earned its 10th

Hanover High School’s girls track team made its presence felt Friday and Saturday at the St. Christopher’s Invitational, with a pair of winners and a number of excellent performances on a weekend where county teams held their own against stiff competition from around the state.
The Hawks’ Makenzie Joiner and Alli Crytser each won an event, Joiner in the 500-meter run and Crytser in the mile. On the boys side, Cole Myers turned in a strong fourth-place performance in the 1,000-meter run.

win of the season as it looks to keep close to both Monacan and Hanover in the Region 4B playoff race, defeating LeeDavis 52-32. Sophomore point guard Logan Nuckols led the Patriots with 17 points, helping Patrick Henry find some separation after Lee-Davis held an 11-10 lead after one period. It was only a 4-point game winding down the third quarter when the Patriots went on an 8-2 run to get the lead to double figures at 36-26 entering the fourth period. Jessica Osuanah had one of her best games of the season, scoring 16 points, her contributions helping loosen the defense on Nuckols, as well as Ava Smith, who added 11.
The next step on the Friday night weekly county tour for Patrick Henry is home, where they’ll welcome Hanover, while Lee-Davis will go to archrival Atlee, both for doubleheader varsity action beginning at 6 p.m.

Megan Mann brought Lee-Davis a championship, with a stunning 44 foot, 5.25- inch hurl in the shot put. The Confederates had their share of top-five finishes as well.
“Alli Crytser – one of the best runners in the country as a freshman, one of the best freshmen in the nation – ran a school record mile and 1,600[- meter] on the way to the mile,” said Hanover head coach Rich Firth. “She won the race going away and continues to win big races against top competition. She’s just something really, really special.”
Firth has also been pleased with Joiner’s progress.
“She ran just off her PR, a couple of tenths [of a second] off what she ran at states last year,” he said. “She’s well ahead of schedule with states over a month away.”
Lee-Davis head coach Neil Mathews said Mann was ready for a big throw in the shot.
“She had a great series of throws throughout. I think the shortest she threw was 41-10 or something like that,” he said. “She seems to do quite well in the spotlight.”

Boys: Atlee 56, Hanover 37 MECHANICSVILLE – Atlee (9-7) used a stifling defensive effort and a dominant performance from Tyler Warren to cruise past Hanover (6-9). The Raiders held the Hawks scoreless in the first quarter and led 14-0 with 6:20 remaining in the first half before allowing their first bucket.
Atlee led 12-0 at the end of the first quarter and, while the Raiders weren’t finding a lot of success in their own right on offense, they were able to rely on the defense to give a bit of a comeback. “We’ve got a really young team. Overall, I was pleased, and a little bit surprised by some of our younger guys stepping up and getting wins.” Owens and Sulser are sophomores, while Mesco and Sadler are juniors. For Lee-Davis as a whole, come postseason, it will be a new experience as they are now in Class 4 rather than Class 5.
“It’s a new scene, and we don’t know,” Tinsley noted. “We’ve seen some 4B teams during the year, but we’ve never wrestled in the postseason against them.”
For Patrick Henry, the night was an expected measuring stick for head coach Jeremy Smith, a 2005 Lee-Davis graduate, looking to lead the Patriots to some of the heights experienced by their rivals.
“When we came out, we were a little bit flat, but I was impressed in how we did in the second and third dual,” Smith said. “This is a tough county to wrestle in. I’ve told my guys that we’re fourth in this county until we’re first.”
Sam Fox went undefeated for the Patriots at 126, but he and his teammates are on notice from Smith with the postseason looming.
“Sam did his job tonight. No one on my team has a job that they can’t improve on right now,” Smith said.
jump start.
“We’ve been playing a lot more zone lately and I feel like we’re getting really comfortable with it. We’re doing a great job communicating so we’re not over helping and we don’t have two guys going to the basketball,” Atlee head coach Rally Axselle said. “Luckily, they missed some shots. I thought part of it was our defense and some of them they just missed.” Warren, Atlee’s senior forward, carried the Raiders offensively in the first half and helped get the team energized. He scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the first half, including a pair of alley-oop dunks off assists from Nicholas Conway and Ralph Axselle. The Raiders led 30-8 at the halftime break. “Tyler [Warren] carried us in the first part and everybody fed off him and got some confidence going,” coach Axselle said. “[His teammates] know they can count on him. They know every night he’s going to bring it.”
Hanover rallied in the second half behind Jack Belcastro, who scored 9 of his team-high 14 points in the third quarter. The Hawks cut the Raiders’ lead to 15 by the end of the third quarter and got as close as 13 in the fourth. Ultimately, however, Atlee proved to be too strong defensively to overcome. The Raiders decidedly won the rebounding battle, which helped keep the home team from getting any closer. Warren secured 12 rebounds for Atlee, which got strong performances on the boards from Ryan Kochon and Kemondre Claiborne as well.
Conway added seven assists and two steals and William Sutkus had 10 points for Atlee in the victory.

Atlee wrapped the week with a first-place team finish at the Arrowhead Wrestling Invitational at Powhatan High School Saturday. Buchanan was named Most Outstanding Wrestler in lower weight divisions, winning the 132-pound title.
