Local health director: VDH monitoring COVID-19 By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
DR. FRANCK
ASHLAND – Chickahominy Health District director Thomas Franck, MD, MPH, said Friday that the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is monitoring an outbreak of respiratory illness, called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID19). Franck, who also serves as the acting director of the Hampton & Peninsula
Health Districts, noted that COVID-19 is caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. “Cases of COVID-19 are being reported in a growing number of countries internationally, including the U.S.,” Dr. Franck said. “The number of states reporting confirmed cases is growing.” He said up-to-date information about Virginia is available at VDH’s website: vdh. virginia.gov/coronavirus. “People who have traveled to places
where there are many cases of COVID-19 may be monitored by health officials to protect their health and the health of other people in the community,” he added. In order to stay up-to-date on travel advisories, Dr. Franck advises checking the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s travel information page: www.cdc.gov/ coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index. html. “Many community members are won-
dering what they can do to stay healthy,” Dr. Franck said. “The best way to prevent COVID-19 is to follow the same steps we recommend for preventing the flu and other respiratory infections: (1) Avoid close contact with people who are sick; (2) Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; see HEALTH, pg. 13
Democratic chair: party rises at the polls 2020 Hanover Idols By Melody Kinser Managing Editor HANOVER – Hanover County followed suit with the rest of the Commonwealth last week during the Democratic Presidential Primary. As Deputy Registrar Sheilah Ann Frattini said, the March 3 election “went off without a glitch.” Dan McGraw, chair of the Hanover Democratic Committee, said, “Super Tuesday was an example of the Democratic growth in the county. We had a record number of people at the primary in Hanover, far surpassing 2016 by more than 87%.” He said the participation “bodes well
for the fall when citizens have the opportunity to vote for positive change. The record number of people going to the polls is a reflection of our overwhelming desire to nominate the best person to defeat Donald Trump.” “I am very grateful for all of our committee McGRAW members and volunteers who have been knocking on doors, making phone calls, organizing Meet & Greet events, and donating time and money to grow the Democratic presence
in Hanover County,” McGraw continued. “Their efforts have paid off with tremendous turnout.” He said the committee is preparing for the Nov. 3 General Election “through grassroots activism. There are several social and action events every month. Our website is seeing an increase in the number of hits.” “Some people say that Hanover County is experiencing a ‘Blue Wave’, meaning that there is a significant increase in Democrats at the polls. If that is true, then I say, ‘Surfs up!’ ” Joseph R. Biden swept through Virginia, including Hanover County, see CHAIR, pg. 13

Old Dominion Honor Flight seeks veterans for trip to D.C. Those who served in World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War invited WILLIAMSBURG -- Old Dominion Honor Flight (ODHF) is seeking World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans for a trip to Washington, D.C., on April 25 to visit the memorials dedicated to honor their sacrifice and service. The trip is free for veterans. Veterans who served from Dec. 7, 1941, to April 30, 1975, who have not been on an Honor Flight trip may apply to be part of ODHF Mission 2. Because space is limited, priority is given to World War II veterans and those who are terminally ill (must be verified by a doctor). ODHF also is seeking guardians, who serve as personal escorts for each veteran and ensure that their day is truly memorable. There is mandatory training and a $125 fee to serve as a guardian. To request an application, send an e-mail to OldDominionHF@gmail.com ODHF serves veterans from Elizabeth City, North Carolina, up through Hampton Roads and Richmond to Fredericksburg, Virginia (including the Eastern Shore) and west to Farmville, Virginia. ODHF Mission 2 will depart from both the Embassy Suites-Hampton Convention Center in Hampton and American Legion
Post 175 in Mechanicsville. In addition to the World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War Memorials, ODHF Mission 2 also will visit the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, the Air Force Memorial in Arlington, and Arlington National Cemetery. “A trip to Washington, D.C., with Old Dominion Honor Flight is an all-day, immersive event” said Mission Director Matt Hartman. “It is designed to provide our nation’s heroes with honor and closure and is described by many participants as a truly ‘once in a lifetime’ event.” “Our sole mission is to honor America’s veterans for their service,” Hartman added. “We took 86 veterans to Washington, D.C., on ODHF Mission 1 in November 2019, and we want to take even more on Mission 2 on April 25, 2020. We invite our World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans to apply to be a part of this amazing experience.” Planning is also is underway for ODHF Mission 3, which will be Oct. 10, 2020. ODHF is a 501(c)(3) organization and is part of the national Honor Flight Network. ODHF trips are made possible through thousands of hours of volunteer work and through the generous material and financial support of donors. To learn about how you can support ODHF, send an email to OldDominionHF@ gmail.com or visit Old Dominion Honor Flight’s Facebook page.

all students. I look forward to seeing how the educators in the second cohort build on this success.” The innovation network’s goals are to promote equity, deeper learning, and active learner engagement at all grade levels and to align instruction and assessment across the state with the expectations of the Profile of a Virginia Graduate. The profile — adopted by the state Board of Education in November 2016 — describes the knowledge, skills, attributes and experiences identified by the board, higher education and employers as
critical for future success. “In communities across the commonwealth, teams of local educators are creating innovative programs and opportunities for students to fulfill the Board of Education’s vision of what it means for a high school graduate to be college, career and life ready,” said Pam Moran, executive director of the Virginia School Consortium for Learning. “The Virginia is for Learners Innovation Network is a catalyst for this exciting work and will continue to be in the future.” The 35 school divisions were grouped into 30 teams. Neighboring counties included: Henrico, King William, and New Kent. The network’s activities are
funded through a $170,000 federal Title II grant from VDOE to James Madison University; a $110,000 grant to the Virginia School Consortium for Learning from Jobs for the Future, a national nonprofit focused on broadening educational and economic opportunity; and a $125,000 grant to the consortium from philanthropist Ted Dintersmith. a greater emphasis on crossdisciplinary, project-based learning in public schools. The Virginia is for Learners Innovation Network conference kicked off with conversation between Dintersmith and Lane about the future of innovation in Virginia and the world and how networking advances innovation to meet the needs of diverse learners. Immediately following, second cohort teams started to work together. A panel of comprising members of the first Virginia is for Learners Innovation Network cohort then shared challenges and successes in their work. Specifically, the Virginia is for Learners Innovation Network seeks to: z Leverage high-quality resources and customized
support for school divisions to create opportunities for students to obtain the knowledge, skills, experiences and attributes described by the Profile of a Virginia Graduate; z Implement systemic innovations over a two-year period specific to local community needs, including internships with employers, interdisciplinary curriculum, innovative instructional practices and performance assessments and; z Establish the Virginia Is for Learners Innovation Network as a permanent structure for the sharing of innovations and best practices. Trying to understand the don’t build theme By Melody Kinser Managing Editor can still hear the sound of trains hauling coal from my home county. That was my lullaby as a child. Only a street separated the last house I had in my hometown with the railroad tracks. It was just part of our lives; we didn’t even notice the noise. There also was the periodic delay of being stopped at a railroad crossing. Some of the coalfilled cars seemed to be endless. The sight of the caboose was a celebratory moment. OK, maybe that is an unusual lead-in to the actual topic, which is the Wegmans’ distribution center. Residents are, as the old saying goes, madder than a wet hen about what they seem to view as heavy traffic encroaching upon their peace and quiet rural lifestyle.
I
I have been contacted by a resident who has provided some information for my benefit. A few weeks ago, I did voice my support for new business and development, noting that the name Wegmans will serve as an attraction for others interested in Hanover County. By the time you read this, I will have visited the area to get a first-hand look at what has Fox Head residents up in arms. I’m not going to second guess anybody, but I do know that we need tax dollars to maintain the services we depend on daily. Posts on our social media sites have been pro and con about the planned construction. Without a doubt, there are many people sharing their opinions on the issue. Where are we now? The Hanover County Planning Commission and Hanover County
Board of Supervisors are letting the people speak. However, they also are victims of some ugly comments. That isn’t going to resolve anything. I don’t live near the site, but development is taking place near my neighborhood. I know traffic is going to increase (and I will readily admit that I’m not the most patient motorist). But, to strengthen our education system and public safety services, tax dollars is the answer. Only time will tell as the supervisors prepare to move forward with a decision later this month. Until then, I expect more residents will write letters to the editor about the proposed center. Recent weeks have proven that we let you express yourself freely. In the meantime, let’s see what happens when the final vote is taken.
The election: And you thought that guy was old? By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist If you blinked your eye, you may have missed it, but it’s presidential primary time in the Commonwealth, and on Tuesday, thousands of Virginians added their two cents to what seems to be an ever-increasing and confusing question of just who will oppose our incumbent president in November.
Considering my status as a maturing member of an aging America, you may thing I’d be thrilled with the prospect of a pair of plus 70-year-olds vying for the top spot in the nation -- but I’m not. Unlike the people running this year, most of them older than Bill Clinton, I’ve learned that with age comes, yes, some added amount of wisdom. But, I’ve also learned that,

as years click off, limitations become more apparent. I’ve also noticed that the ones affected by this inevitable change in skill-sets are often the last ones to acknowledge the hands of time stand still for no one. Add to that equation, a job that demands the most from the youngest of candidates, and one might reasonably ask if the job might be done better by a younger person. I say yes.
I first voted in 1968, and if there is one constant in our American political arena, it’s the before and after photos of the, so far, men, who have accepted the challenge. Not a one of them has survived those photos that clearly show the strain of the job, the immense daily grind of pressure and politics that takes a toll on all who endure it. see OLD, pg. 8

World crept in to resident’s ideal serene life I recently saw a picture of an ad from when Kings Charter was being developed. At the top it reads “At King’s Charter not everyone drives a Volvo”. There’s a picture of someone on a tractor, waving as cars go down a country road by silos and grain fields. Below the picture it reads, “Traditional homes ... surrounded by farmland in Hanover County”. Someone commented that it must have been lovely. It was. I remember when there was a sign on the corner of Sliding Hill and Atlee Station roads that said “Coming Soon”. As we were riding around, looking for a new place to call home, I begged my husband not to ever make me live out here in the middle of nowhere. Fast forward 34 years and we’ve had four homes here in Atlee. It has been a lovely, safe place to raise our kids and to begin our retirement. We watched the world find us. It wasn’t too bad until the new interchange at Interstate 95, Walmart, and FedEx. Now it is traffic jams and stoplights. The plan for the Wegmans distribution center and the increase in traffic, accidents, back-ups, and noise it will bring, make me feel sick. We had no clue this distribution center was coming -- none. We thought that area was wetlands and swamp, natural space. I feel betrayed. Martha Smith Mechanicsville

I must admit our current president has perhaps shown the least wear and tear emitted by the enormous responsibilities, and it seems his age has better prepared this president for the rigors of office -- or maybe he handles it better than his younger counterparts. Even with that expertise, some say the job has turned this president a whiter shade of orange, evidence the job takes a toll on everyone who occupies the office. It doesn’t take a detailed or accurate memory to recount how the question of age has seemed very important to American voters in recent

years. Ronald Reagan was constantly berated regarding his fitness for office, and many lamented his deteriorating abilities during his second term in office, but others referred to a forgotten names and dates as wisdom. Ronald Reagan was 69 years old when he was elected president, the oldest elected head of state in American history. Bernie Sanders is 78 years old, and Joe Biden is a year behind. And Donald Trump is like the guy driving the bus at the nursing home at a spry 73 years, the youngster of the trio. I must admit I enter this year’s electoral season with a lackluster attitude, and, for the first time in many years, I don’t have a clear choice in mind. I’ll leave it to politically-savvy minds to decipher just why the contest seems to lessen in
intensity rather that heat up. Maybe, it’s because the candidates are in bed by 8 p.m. I also think it’s commendable that Americans see the aging process with a better sense of understanding than just because you can’t find you keys doesn’t mean you can’t drive a car. But, honestly, I’m yearning for that candidate with youth and vigor, the excitement of energy and vitality of a younger man or woman who, in mind, would be better suited to the demands of perhaps the hardest job on earth. Don’t get me wrong. There are plenty of jobs for which a 70-year-old or older would be the perfect candidate, and I’m the first one to appreciate the wisdom and experience that only years can provide. I’m just not sure running the country is one of them.
An accident anywhere 20 miles north or south of Richmond will cause gridlock for miles. And we know what happens. All manner of vehicles divert to the nearest northsouth routes to bypass. Wegmans has said they will reroute traffic when this happens. So, their trucks will add to the already packed alternate routes. But they’ll still be headed for the single entrance on
Sliding Hill Road. That means traversing (1) the AshcakePeaks and Mt. Hermon-Sliding Hill roads from the north, and/ or (2) New Ashcake or Atlee Station roads from the east, and/or (3) Lewistown Road through the Airpark and Route 1/Sliding Hill Road from the west. Think about it. In scenario (1), these roads are simply not adequate for see LETTERS, pg. 13

Plans underway to share story of the rails ASHLAND – Plans are in the works for a unique walking tour park that will highlight the Town of Ashland’s railroad heritage, dating to the 1830s. Last Thursday, a second public meeting was held at the Ashland Library to gather input on the concept and design of the Mid Atlantic Railroad Park. The Downtown Ashland Association is spearheading the proposed park, with a goal of telling the story of the Ashland community, as well as providing entertainment downtown. A major thoroughfare for exhibits will be along England Street and Railroad Avenue. Among the displays planned are a 1922 train station, a 1926 red caboose, a train mural, major railroad inventions, advances, and memorabilia. These exhibits will spotlight how vital railroads have been and continue to be in the town. No fees will be involved, as all exhibits are being made available free of charge to the public. The park will be open year-round. In addition, a virtual tour and mobile application will reach

MECHANICSVILLE -Chef Rebekah Balthaser, at Bright Horizons at Short Pump in Richmond, was named the winner of Bright Horizons’ Recipe Contest, an annual competition for chefs nation-
wide. She is a Mechanicsville resident. The contest called for recipes that encourage healthy eating habits in early childhood and was open to all chefs in the more than 750 centers across the U.S., calling for the best, healthy “no-bake” snack recipe. Chefs from coast to coast
submitted their recipes, and when three finalists were chosen, a taste test held at a company conference determined Rebekah as the winner. Chef Rebekah’s “Dilly Dip” was the winning recipe. She was described as an see CHEFS, pg. 16

Town’s budget work gets into full swing with input By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local ASHLAND – The Town of Ashland begins its budget process in earnest with a series of public budget workshops scheduled in the next few weeks to gather public input on the process. “Next Tuesday, we’ll have a full budget work session, and the one after that begins an hour before [Ashland] Town Council,” Town Manger Josh Farrar said last week. “This is a critical time to get citizen input heard,” he continued. “We always want earlier input. It is better than later input so the more you can tell us now, the better.” Various departments are scheduled to present on those Tuesday sessions, and which ones are slotted for a specific night are listed on the county’s website. The March 10 meeting was scheduled to feature reports on Revenues, Legislative, Town Manager, Finance, Public Works & Capital Projects. Preceding council’s regularly scheduled meeting on March 17, a one-hour budget work session also is planned with an additional workshop on March 24. Mayor Steve Trivett credited Farrar for designing a set of community meetings held in various locations designed to gather public input

and provide information on how citizens can become involved in their community. “I want to credit our town manager for having set up these community meetings and just wanted to let the public know we have started with certain locations but we’re not closed to other locations if there is an interest out there,” Trivett said. “We are happy to bring the show on the road. We had the opportunity to talk and mainly listen . . . and hearing what citizens had to say about things they like, things they don’t like, and goals they would set for the town. We
did this last year.” “We encourage folks about the town election and how that process works and encouraging people to get involved,” Trivette said. Council member Daniel McGraw also found those community meetings as beneficial. “The community meetings are a way for our citizens to share what concerns they have in the community no matter what it is — big or small,” McGraw said. The mayor also provided an update on the proposed Ashland Railroad Park. “The Railroad
Park discussion continues,” Trivette said. “The vision is to have a walking park in the Town of Ashland using various things related to the railroad, whether it’s a mural or some railroad structures and equipment.” Two meetings have been held to gather public input on the project. Farrar also announced a list of candidates for Ashland’s upcoming Town Council election provided by County Registrar Teri Smithson. Those six candidates are D.A. Wooten, Stephanie Renee Hare, David G. Goldstein, Steven Trivett, Kathy Abbott and Anita Barnhart. “I think we should be pleased that many people are willing to serve on council,” vice chair John Hodges commented. “I just want to encourage people to get involved in your community,” Trivette said. “We have three seats open and more than three people interested in serving. We don’t run against each other. We run with each other,” the mayor concluded. Three of the council’s five seats are up for election on the ballot. Voting is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 5 at Ashland Town Hall. Prior to the meeting, council members toured the site of the new Town Hall. “It’s going to be wonderful . . .and we’re looking forward to be in there,” Trivett said.
Taylor, Turner sing their way into Idol wins
A
SHLAND – Audrey Kate Taylor and Rebekah Turner sang their way into winning the titles of Hanover Idol 2020 and Hanover Junior Idol 2020, respectively. The competition was held on Sunday at the Ashland Theatre, with James Lynn serving as master of ceremonies. Layla Morris was the runner-up in the junior division, which got underway at 3:30 p.m. Kadyn Bunting came in as runner-up for the 7 p.m. Hanover Idol events, which is for singers 16 years old and up. These winners were crowned by the previous winners, —Jason Call, 2018 Hanover Idol, and Madison Cox, 2018 Hanover Junior Idol, who entertained the audience during the judges’ deliberations. The Ashland Theatre was filled with
friends, family, supporters, and music lovers who enjoyed impressive singers from all over Hanover. The 22 finalists who performed on Sunday had been selected on Feb. 8 by audition judges from a talented group of over 45 singers. The newly- crowned Hanover Junior Idol is Rebekah Turner, who sings with the Oak Knoll Middle School Chorus and the City Singers Youth Choir. She also admitted that she loves makeup, unicorns, and mermaids—reminding us that she is still 12. Rebekah won her title by singing “Burn” from the Broadway play “Hamilton.” The runner-up for the Hanover Junior Idol is Layla Morris who sang, “Give Me You,” accompanied by her uncle, Donnie Morris. Layla started singing at 4 years
old at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she continues to sing. Calling herself a “Daddy’s girl,” Layla loves gospel, R&B, and some rap music. She also loves to laugh and dance with the Patrick Henry Step Team. The newly-crowned Hanover Idol, Audrey Kate Taylor, was the Hanover Junior Idol in 2014. A junior at Atlee High School, Audrey Kate is currently Miss Shenandoah Valley’s Outstanding Teen and an ambassador for the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation. She sings with three show choirs and has performed in various Virginia Rep plays. With this level of activity, the Registrar’s Office is actively seeking Registered Voters to serve as Officers of Election. Interested candidates are urged to visit the Hanover County website at www.hanovercounty.gov to apply, or call 804-365-6080 for more information. Upcoming elections include the Ashland Town Election (for Ashland Town residents only) on May 5, the June Primary (countywide) on June 9 and the Presidential Election (countywide) on Nov. 3.
The runner-up for Hanover Idol is Kadyn Bunting. Kadyn has been singing since first grade, when she was cast in the first grade musical. A sophomore at Lee Davis, Kadyn likes Retro music and vintage items. She wants to be a history teacher some day. Kadyn sang “Watch What Happens” from “Newsies.” The judges who chose the winners for both shows were John Gordon, Jeanette Creger, Janice Brock, and Carter Flippo. Since 2007, 2008 and every even year since, the Hanover Arts and Activities Center has sponsored the Hanover Idols’ competitions. The

show is produced and directed by Lorie Foley and Sue Watson, with Henry Clay Elementary School music teacher Fred Horn as music director. The purpose of the competition is two-fold: to showcase talented singers by giving them an opportunity to share their talent, and to offer aspiring singers coaching as they go through the process — from audition to the final performance. These 22 finalists worked very hard with coaches Fred Horn, Sean Kennedy, Sarah Harper, Ammie Mines-Derricott, Kellie Watson, and Jason Call. The Hanover Junior finalists included: Victoria Fink, Kadence Prendergast, Cooper Lunde, Hailey Hotek, Rasheeda Diong, Ella Wagner, Kayla Atanacio,

Yellow Jacket men advance to Sweet 16 By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND – For most of the first 30 minutes, The College of New Jersey, with deadly accurate 3-point shooting, was able to run with – and at times ahead of – RandolphMacon in their second-round game of the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament at Crenshaw Gymnasium Saturday. But the Yellow Jackets found ways to shut down the Lions’ opportunities from the perimeter and once they regained the lead for good with a 3-pointer of their own with 14:15 left, they began to pull away for an 85-71 victory. Randolph-Macon (28-2) will next face Yeshiva in the Sweet 16 Friday at 2 p.m. in Crenshaw Gymnasium. “It’s been exciting to play another 40 minutes with this group,” said Randolph-Macon head men’s basketball coach Josh Merkel. “It’s a special group. It’s been a fun journey.” Merkel credited the players with devising the bulk of the adjustments that helped them get ahead of the Lions. “These guys have been extremely player driven. I think that’s the most talk I’ve heard in the locker room at halftime,” Merkel said. “As coaches, we let them go another minute instead of coming in at the 10-minute

The College of New Jersey (20-9) was led by senior guard Randall Walko with 23 points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Travis Jocelyn finished with 14 points and senior forward Ryan Jensen had 13 points and seven rebounds. Walko and Jensen had four 3-pointers apiece as the Lions converted 14-of-25 opportunities from beyond the arc. Merkel made some minor tweaks to the defense, like putting Mallory on duty guarding TCNJ junior guard P.J. Ringel, but still the Yellow Jacket players took the lead. “We kept trusting what we were doing,” Anthony said. “They were shooting it good, but we knew it was going to keep going in for 40 minutes – at least we hoped. So we were doing everything we could, then we kind of found something that we liked and kept going to it. … As the game goes on, it’s just finding out things, Dave Lawrence/The Local where we can attack, what we Randolph-Macon junior guard Buzz Anthony applauds the Crenshaw Gymnasium faithful for their thundering support in the first can do.” two rounds of the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament Saturday. R-MC women fall to tough Oglethorpe By Charlie Leffler For the Mechanicsville Local LEXINGTON, Ky. – The second round of the NCAA D-III women’s basketball tournament proved a physical affair between Randolph-Macon and Oglethorpe. The teams combined for 42 fouls, 35 turnovers, nine blocked shots and 19 steals before the Stormy Petrels walked away with a hard-fought 71-63 victory over the Yellow Jackets. Randolph-Macon senior Kelly Williams turned in a monster performance in the contest, with a game-highs in points (29) and rebounds (15), but it wasn’t enough to secure a win for the Yellow Jackets. Other than Williams, the R-MC starters were limited to a total of 11 points by Olgethorpe’s stingy defense, going 8-of-40 for 37.5 percent shooting from the floor. As a team, the Yellow Jackets shot 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from 3-point range. “We got beat at our own game today,” said RandolphMacon head coach Carol LaHaye. “I thought Oglethorpe did a very nice job of taking us out of our game and that is what we’ve taken pride in our last few games is making other teams uncomfortable.” Though players on both sides looked drained in the final minutes, LaHaye did not believe fatigue led to the outcome. “We always take a lot of pride in our conditioning and I know our players were probably tired to a certain extent but I don’t think that was a factor.” It was an accordion battle throughout. Oglethorpe would open a lead only to repeatedly see the Yellow Jackets close the margin. “This has been a resilient group all season long,” said
LaHaye. “We have sometimes started games slow and we’ve had to turn it up a little bit and get back into it.” Randolph-Macon’s only lead came early in the contest. The Yellow Jackets were on top 10-9 midway through the first quarter when a layup by Olgethorpe’s Nikki Reed put the Stormy Petrels ahead for good. Though they continued to trim the margin, the Yellow Jackets were never able to get back in front. The speed and aggressiveness of Oglethorpe created problems for Randolph-Macon throughout the game. The Stormy Petrels forced 19 Yellow Jacket turnovers in the game, many of which led to 16 fastbreak points. Reed, who led the Petrels with 22 points, also proved to be a pesky defender, coming away with four steels while also slashing through the Yellow Jacket defense to score inside. Oglethorpe outscored Randolph-Macon 42-28 in the paint. Center Savannah LeGate’s size inside proved a perfect complement for Reed, giving the Petrels a one-two punch late in the game. LeGate finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. “That’s a tough matchup for both our post player and point guard,” said LaHaye. Trailing by six points at the half, five consecutive foul calls against the Yellow Jackets allowed the Petrels to widen the margin to 13 with less than three minutes left in the third quarter. However, with the game on the brink of getting out of control, Williams and Becca Arrington went to work. A technical on Oglethorpe’s Sydni Donovan with 53.7 secsee WOMEN, pg. 23

Hawks falls in first VHSL state appearance By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local NORFOLK – There were tears shed as the Hanover girls basketball team emerged from their locker room at Norfolk State University Friday, in part from seeing their season end at the hands of the Hampton Crabbers in a Virginia High School League Class 4 state quarterfinal. But what the 58-31 final score did not measure was the effort of Hanover, especially on defense, their competitive spirit from tip to final buzzer, and, most of all, the genuine love the Hawks have for each other. On the court, the story was shooting. Once in a 16-16 tie thanks to a 3-pointer off the glass from Julia Mardigian with 5:22 left in the second period, the Hawks went into an offensive funk. Over the next 13 and a half minutes, Hanover was limited to 12 total points, and, by the end of the third period, Hampton was in control with a 43-25 lead. “Their defense had a little bit to do with it,” said Hanover head coach Mike Rohr. “We rushed some shots, but a lot of stuff we were trying to do was actually working, but when the ball doesn’t go in, it makes it look like you’re not playing too well.” Hampton’s attack was completely dedicated to the paint. The Crabbers (25-1) only attempted four treys during the game, missing all of them. Where they excelled was at the glass, finding second and sometimes third chances to quietly, and confidently, build their lead two points at a time. The Crabber defense was stout all around, but took extra time to limit Hanover senior Jordan Davis, trying to keep her from establishing a pres-

in the final minute of the first period to cut an early Crabber lead to 12-10. It was even play until after the Mardigian triple,
as Hampton finished the first half on a 15-3 run. For the game, Hanover (223) shot just 21.1 percent from the floor, making just 12 of 57 shots. The Hawks made only 3 of 24 3-point tries, and even struggled at the line, making just 4 of 7 free throws. Adrianna Jacobs scored all six of her points in the third period, all in the paint, as the Hawks struggled from the floor. The Crabbers had 14 steals, while Hanover committed 23 turnovers. It was a quiet, disappointing end to an historic season for the Hawks, who made their first state tournament appearance in the game. Rohr, also fighting back tears, gave credit to his team’s tenacity and effort all year long, but gave a special nod to the senior class, who will leave Hanover with 66 victories over four seasons, something unheard of when Rohr took over the program. “Their freshman year, we ended up 13-11 after being 2-21 the year before. What the seniors have done in terms of buying in, their hard work and leadership, just bringing the young kids along is absolutely incredible,” Rohr said. As Davis, Russell, Madison Miller and Olivia Hunter prepare for their next chapters on and off the court, the Hawks bring back the likes of Jacobs, Mardigian, Emily Mott – who was injured and unable to play Friday – and three young guards in sophomore Kayla Ford and freshmen Erin Woodson and Autumn Robinson. Add inside presence Abigail Long to Mott inside, and the Hawks will be ready to try and make even more history come November. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
County track teams return with champions By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor LYNCHBURG – After winning their respective Region 4B team championships, the LeeDavis boys and Hanover girls came away with a second- and third-place finish, respectively, in the Virginia High School League Class 4 state indoor track and field championships at Liberty University on March 2-3. In the boys championship, Loudon Valley, with its strong running contingent, ran away with the team lead with 102 points. The Confederates were in a tight battle with Courtland for runner-up, and with a notunusual (for them) touch of drama, waited until a secondplace finish in the final event of the day – the boys 4x400-meter relay – to get a two-point edge on the Cougars and Churchland as well with 38 points to the other teams’ 36. Jack Rice, Jake Perkins, Sam Patterson and Blake Moody nearly ran down the relay champions, Churchland, finishing less than two seconds behind them with a time of 3:28.23 to the Truckers’ 3:26.78. “We were waiting on that [performance] all day,” said Lee-Davis head track and field coach Neil Mathews. “There was a bit of persisting through adversity that we had all day. Each one of those kids was able to come through.” The Confederate boys had

Hanover’s girls were led by Makenzie Joiner and Alli Crytser. Joiner won the 500 dash – setting a new meet record in
the process – and Crytser won the 3,200 and finished second in the 1,600. “I feel amazing – speechless,” Joiner said. She seized the lead from the start and built upon it throughout. “That was the game plan, to start out fast and hold onto that until the last stretch – to give it
my all,” she said. Crytser’s victory was tougher. She fought off a number of challengers – especially a pair of runners from Loudon Valley and one from Millwood – to gut out her win. “I was worried they would make bigger moves,” Cryster said. “I wanted to be able to cover it. I started out pretty con-
servative in the early laps to prepare myself if they tried a spurt.” On the boys side, Hanover’s Cole Myers finished second in the 1,000. “Mentally, I think perhaps we let a few calls get to us and we haven’t let that happen to us all season long. So, in a game if this nature and this kind of magnitude, you’re bound to let some of that happen and maybe that got the best of us.” With the game tied,
Oglethorpe’s Reed and LeGate went to work allowing the Petrels to go on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes then never let the Yellow Jackets get closer than eight over the remainder of the game. “We knew what we wanted to do,” said LaHaye. “We knew
what we had to do. We just didn’t do it as consistently as what we should have.” Despite trailing, RandolphMacon had one highlight in the closing minutes of the game. Senior forward Michal Ross came into the contest needing four points to join the Yellow

ing so much of the opposing attention on defense, Anthony made it easier for other players to find their niche. “I just know that I have good players on the court with me. Everyone’s staring at him and losing me, so I just try to move and get open and knock them down.”
loss, the Yellow Jackets need only examine how far they came over the final month. On Feb. 1, R-MC sat at 9-9 on the season with little hope of seeing extended post season play. However, Randolph-Macon finished the regular season on a 6-0 run then swept the next four games to claim the ODAC tournament championship. “Right around February the first when we became healthy and started putting it together and things started clicking for us, we went from playing on four cylinders to playing on 13 cylinders,” said LaHaye. “I think that made a big difference. It was a joy to coach that. It was a joy to see them come together. It was a joy to see each one of them grow and want to improve their game and be a part of the success.” The Yellow Jackets opened the NCAA tournament by defeating ninth ranked Transylvania (71-63) on their home court. Transylvania had previously lost only twice all season. “I know many people didn’t think we would get this far, so it was a joy to bring this team to the second round of the NCAAs,” said LaHaye. “Obviously, unless you win the national championship, your season is going to end in a loss. But we have a lot to be proud of, a lot to be thankful for and nothing to be ashamed of at all. “We were a preseason pick No. 3 in our conference. We struggled in the beginning and still came through and made the most out of it. That’s something, when you end up being the conference champions, that’s something nobody can ever take away from you. Maybe not everybody gets to play in the championship game or get the stats but they’ll always be a champion.” Charlie Leffler can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.
Yellow Jackets overcome foul trouble, Wesley ASHLAND – Despite foul trouble and rough-and-tumble opponent, Randolph-Macon survived a Wesley team that refused to give up in an 81-69 win over Wesley in Crenshaw Gymnasium in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament Friday night. Every time RandolphMacon took a sizeable lead, Wesley (18-10) would find a way to cut the deficit to within striking distance. With strong outside shooting, especially from senior guard Brian Cameron (34 points, nine rebounds), the Yellow Jackets could not relax until the closing minutes when the Wolverines were forced to foul. “This time of year you’re playing nothing but good teams,” said Randolph-Macon head men’s basketball coach Josh Merkel. “Wesley was a good team. They knew how to get the whistle and I give them credit. “But our guys, they stayed the course, had the halftime lead, played with the lead, made some free throws, made some plays down the stretch.” Randolph-Macon’s defense, with quick hands and feet, often thwarted the Wolverines’ attempts to run their offense. The Yellow Jackets, led by freshman guard Miles Mallory with four steals and senior guard

Randolph-Macon junior guard Buzz Anthony said the Yellow Jacket defense stuck to what got it to the postseason. “We trust what we’ve been doing all year. guys did a great job trusting each other, being in the gaps, helping each other out.” In all, Wesley finished with 13 turnovers compared to just eight for the Yellow Jackets, and many of the Wolverine turnovers were forced. “I thought that we didn’t move the ball like we had wanted to early on,” said Wolverines’ head coach Dean Burrows. “You’re not going to beat a team like [Randolph-Macon] turn-
ing the ball over as we did early. “We only had one offensive rebound in the first half as well. That’s a calling card for us. For as small as we are, we’ve got a lot of pride getting to the glass, but we finished with 13 (total).” Anthony, who fouled out late in the second half, led Randolph-Macon 21 points. Mallory and fellow freshman guard Josh Talbert finished with 18 and 13 points, respectively.
Anthony praised his younger teammates. “We’ve got great young guys who step up,” he said. “It seems like the moment is never too big for them.” Mallory finished with nine rebounds. “It felt great to be out there,” he said. “We’re a team. Affordable features when revamping your kitchen itchens are popular gathering spots in many homes. That popularity is reflected in various ways, including how many homeowners choose to remodel their kitchens. A 2019 report from the home renovation and design resource Houzz found that kitchens were the most popular room to renovate in 2018. Homeowners considering kitchen remodels should know that the Houzz report also indicated that spending on kitchen remodels increased by 27 percent in 2018. Homeowners concerned by the cost of remodeling a kitchen should know that there are ways to give kitchens a whole new feel without breaking the bank.

Appliances Consumer Reports notes that luxury home buyers expect highend features, including professional ranges and built-in refrigerators that match the surrounding cabinetry. However, many mainstream brands offer ‘faux pro’ features that can equal more expensive alternatives. Consumer Reports even notes
that many budget-friendly faux pro appliances outperformed their high-end counterparts in terms of reliability. Countertops Countertops tend to capture the eye’s attention when walking into a kitchen. Outdated and/or damaged countertops grab that attention for all the wrong reasons, while updated countertops made from today’s most popular materials provide that wow factor homeowners seek. If granite is a must-have, Consumer Reports notes that homeowners can save substantial amounts of money by choosing granite from remnants at the stone yard. If marble is your ideal countertop, save money by choosing a domestic product as opposed to one imported from overseas. Cabinets Custom-built cabinets may be a dream, but they tend to be a very expensive one. tens of thousands of dollars. If that estimate would bust your budget, examine the current layout of the existing cabinets. If the layout is fine but the cabinets need work,
you can give them a whole new look by refinishing them. If the cabinets must go, stock units or semi-custom cabinets can provide a new look without busting the budget.

Wallpaper Wallpaper fell out of favor years ago, but new styles that aren’t so heavily patterned can make for wonderful additions to any room. Largescale prints can give a room a whole new feel without giving homeowners or their guests the impression that they have stepped back in time. A simple, mural-style floral wallpaper on the walls surrounding a table in a breakfast nook can bring nature inside. Pastel colors Nothing embodies the spring quite like pastel

colors. If colorful, bright flowers dot the garden in the backyard, homeowners can bring those uplifting pastels inside by painting an accent wall or even adding some brightly colored accent furniture to rooms that could use a lift. Declutter Clutter is often conquered during spring cleaning sessions, but homeowners who want to create more free-flowing interior spaces can downsize their furniture and/or look for multipurpose features that make it hard for clutter to take over a room. Create more open space in entertaining areas by mounting the television and getting rid of a bulky entertainment center. Create even more space by replacing rarely used
end tables with a storage ottoman where books and magazines can be stored to give a room a fresh, clean look. Accent features Sometimes the smallest changes to an interior space make the biggest impression. Replace dated accents like vases and table lamps with newer items that reflect the latest styles and trends. Such adjustments won’t break the bank, and they can give rooms a whole new feel. Spring is a great time to reconsider home interiors. This spring homeowners can embrace various strategies, both big and small, to give their homes a whole new feel. -Metro Creative

Wood panel design trend is coming back esign trends come and go, but some have a funny way of resurfacing years after they first became popular. Homeowners who may have been considering renovating their home to remove a design element they believe to be passe might want to see if that feature has experienced a resurgence in popularity. In fact, one of the more derided home decor trends of yesteryear has slowly crept back into style, albeit in moderation. Wood paneling is back and better than ever, advise many design professionals. It’s the formerly ugly duckling that
D
filled homes starting in the 1950’s, creating drab dens and faux-wood family rooms. Paneling had long been an element of choice because it is relatively easy to install and can camouflage problem walls in a home, like those covered in boisterous wallpaper prints. Wood paneling reach the peak of its popularity in the 1970’s, and since then homeowners have been tearing down these faux offenders for years or masking them in paint to brighten up spaces. However, the experts at Apartment Therapy report that wood paneling in shades of brown are making a comeback in cozy
spots such as dens or studies. The warm tones of wood paneling elicit a retro vibe. But unlike their fake predecessors, today’s paneled walls are being outfitted in real wood, making them more eco-friendly and stylish than ever before. Designers have flocked to reclaimed wood and veneer panelings to incorporate them into design elements. And while wood paneling used to be hung vertically, designers now experiment with hanging paneling. Many people no longer use paneling to cover an entire space. Paneling is used sparingly as an accent wall or another

feature for character. Wood walls can be stained in a rich mahogany to look upscale or be weathered and rustic. Homeowners ready to reembrace wood paneling can choose to enhance one wall in
a room. Think about the space above a fireplace or a strip of wall behind a sitting chair and side table. Paneling also can serve as a headboard behind a bed in a master suite. Painted horizontally, paneling can add
dimension and texture to walls, even in a bathroom. Wood paneling is slowly making a comeback, proving that no design trend every truly goes away. -Metro Creative
WHY PAINTERS WEAR WHITE he sight of professional painters decked out in white overalls is a familiar one to many people. Perhaps you’ve pondered just why painters wear white? The reasons behind painters’ sartorial choices is not easily verifiable, but it’s fun to explore nonetheless. The actual name for a painting professionals wardrobe is ‘painter’s whites.’ White canvas or denim pants, white t-shirt, overalls, and a white cap are often worn by painters. The idea of wearing white may date back to the 1700s, when there were not a variety of house colors available. As a result, white was the primary choice of paint at this time. If white paint were to be dripped on a white uniform, it wouldn’t be readily noticed before laundering. Painters also used to mix 50 pounds of ‘white lead powder’ with a can of paint paste to make about two gallons of paint. The mixing process produced large amounts of white dust. To hide the dust, the painters wore white. It is also believed that some painters crafted clothing from the white sails from ships. Another theory behind painters’ preference for white work gear traces its origins to 19th century union painters. Those in the union adopted the
T
all-white uniform to differentiate themselves from non-union painters. Sometimes a black bow tie was added to complete the professional presentation. There are some practical reasons for painters to wear white. White clothing tends to be cooler when working outdoors or in sunny locations. Should painter’s whites become dirty, they’re easily bleachable without the color fading. Also, white is a pristine color that will present the appearance of cleanliness. Homeowners may readily invite and trust a clean worker into their homes to get the job done. Painters often find that their business logo stands out sharply against the white of a uniform, which can be another practical reason to don some white overalls. White clothing also can be less expensive to replace. Today, because there are many other paint hues available, painter’s whites may not be so pristine. But those variously shaded specks and splatters may be indicative of a seasoned professional who has put in many hours on the job. Painters have long worn white as their unofficial uniform. The theories as to why vary, but the tradition is likely here to stay. -Metro Creative

Storage opportunities in hidden places inding more space to store and display all the ‘stuff ’ used for day-to-day living, as well as life’s pleasures, can be an adventure that ends with everything in its perfect place. Woodcraft can help you with a few ideas to kick-start your space hunt and then suggestions for tools and supplies to make your storage projects successful. Small tables with enclosed storage underneath, chests and trunks that provide seating, benches with built-in storage, beds with built-in space underneath or in the headboard, and kitchen islands with concealed nooks are all options to manage ‘stuff.’
Plan for Painting Up Front ‘When choosing where to develop storage and display space, you have the opportunity to rethink the colors in rooms where changes will be made,’ Woodcraft Public Relations Manager and blogger Lori Harper said. ‘By using paint in building, buying or repurposing storage pieces, you can change or supplement an existing color palette.’ Woodcraft stocks a wide selection of finishing and paint products, including the versatile General Finishes Milk Paint, General Finishes Flat Out Flat Topcoat, Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint, and Black Dog Salvage Guard Dog and Show Dog Topcoats.
In the kitchen, add drawers to the space (toe-kick) beneath lower cabinets to store rarely used items. Shelving and bookcases, either built-in or freestanding/open or enclosed, will transform unused wall areas or sections of large closets into instant storage for a wide range of items. Nooks cut out of the wall and covered by pictures offer one of many concealed storage options that also include nooks or drawers in the sides of enclosed staircases. The ideas for storage and display projects are endless and can be found through Internet searches and on Woodcraft.com in books like ‘Stanley Built-Ins & Storage’ by David Schiff, in the Woodcraft blog, and in free videos and articles.

Tips for waterproofing a basement or crawl space Water can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. Few things have the potential to damage a home as much as water. From leaks to flooding to moisture problems like mold, water can wreak havoc on a home. Basements or crawl spaces are areas of a home where water can do the most damage. Basements and crawl spaces tend to be the lowest-lying spots in a home, and therefore prime spots for water to enter. Water problems in these areas can contribute to the demise of the structural integrity of the foundation. Water can enter homes in numerous ways. Many building materials, including concrete, that seem solid at first glance actually are quite porous. As ground water collects around these materials, the weight of the accumulated water, called hydrostatic pressure, can weaken the materials, causing cracks where water can seep through. Water also can enter subterranean spaces through basement windows and gaps between footings and concrete slabs, or push up through foundation floors when homes are in areas with high water tables. Remedying water issues in a home generally breaks down into two methodologies: exterior waterproofing and interior waterproofing. Depending on the cause and severity of the water issue, one or the other, or even both, may be recommended. Exterior waterproofing Exterior waterproofing aims to keep water away from and out of the home.
8B
The home improvement information resource DoItYourself. com says that exterior waterproofing generally includes the application of a waterproofing agent to the concrete foundation. In addition, exterior waterproofing also could include excavation so a drainage system can be installed around the entire footing of the home. Regrading a property and properly relocating gutters and downspouts can help with many water issues. Interior waterproofing When water in a basement or crawl space needs to be remediated indoors, a system to collect, drain and remove water may be necessary. This can include sump pumps, drains, gravity discharge systems, and more. Moisture barriers, which can include special paints or products applied to the foundation walls and floor, also can help keep water from entering the space. Moisture solutions Keeping water out is only one part of the equation. Homeowners also need to manage moisture, like excessive humidity. A marriage of HVAC and waterproofing techniques may be necessary to improve air flow and remove humidity in the air. While many homeowners have attempted to address water issues on their own, many times it is a job best left to the professionals. Because water penetration can have multifaceted causes, a professional can best assess the situation and create solutions that fit with homeowners’ budgets and needs. -Metro Creative

$64,000. Homeowners should develop budgets for their bathroom renovation projects to determine which type of project they can afford. The noise can be difficult to overcome for professionals who work from home full-time, and it also can be hard on parents of young children who still nap and don’t yet go to school. As a result, parents of young children may want to schedule renovations during family vacations so their children are exposed to as little dust as possible. Changes Few renovations go off without a hitch. Once a project begins, contractors often uncover issues that weren’t noticeable to the naked eye. These issues may increase the cost of completing a project or force homeowners to change their plans to make the project stay as close to their budgets as possible. Recognizing that these decisions may have to be made on the fly can help homeowners feel more prepared when unexpected issues arise. Bathroom renovation projects are worthwhile investments.
