County readies Ashland to Petersburg Fall Line for historical Trail ground broken with Northam General Election Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com
By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
HANOVER – In what might turn out to be an historic turnout in voting Tuesday, Hanover County was seeing plenty of activity at the Director of Elections/General Registrar’s office at Hanover Courthouse. Teresa “Teri” Smithson said the county has 84,170 total registered voters, with 82,900 of them active. The number of inactive voters is 1,270. To qualify for that status, a voter either has not voted in a long time or has moved out of the county. With the eyes of the world watching as Democrat Joe Biden and Libertarian Jo Jorgensen challenge incumbent Republican President Donald J. Trump, voting in Hanover County is expected to be higher than usual. Their run-

Gade is challenging incumbent Democrat Mark R. Warner – and U.S. House of Representatives 1st District – Democrat Qasim Rashid versus Robert J. Wittman, the Republican incumbent. Voters also will be deciding the fate of two Constitutional Amendments. SHLAND — Governor Ralph S. Northam officially broke ground on the new Fall Line trail in a ceremony featuring elected officials and trail advocates that took place last Wednesday in Carter Park in Ashland, the northern terminus of the trail. Once completed, the paved, multi-use trail will span about 43 miles between Ashland and Petersburg. The Fall Line trail will course through seven localities, cross the Chickahominy, James, and Appomattox Rivers, and connect with parks, businesses, and schools along the way. Running north to south, the Fall Line will be the spine of a regional trail network connecting
with the Virginia Capital Trail in Richmond and the Appomattox River Trail in Petersburg. “The Fall Line name reflects the corridor's unique geography, and it's the perfect
name for the new biking and walking highway to connect people in Central Virginia," said Governor Northam. "I want to thank all of the local officials, regional planning staff, VDOT

Scams increase presence as DMV services move online Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND -- Because of COVID-19 challenges, state departments of motor vehicles (DMVs) around the United States generally have expanded their online offerings by encouraging drivers to book appointments or prepay for services. Yes, every vote really does count By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ote. While it may be a short word, it is huge in terms of impact. And, as I have written so many times through the years, it is your privilege -- and responsibility -- to be counted. If ever in the history of our country there is a time when you need to express yourself through the right to vote, this is it. We don’t endorse candidates, and I’m not trying to sway anyone toward any party. My role through this column is simple: To urge you to vote. My parents instilled in me the honor we have as Americans to determine who serves we the people. Take full advantage of that precious
V
and envied right. Think about the countries whose people have no say whatsoever in who rules or how laws are made. Think about where you live and how proud Virginians fought all those centuries ago for what we enjoy today. I delight in telling people I live in the same county as Patrick Henry did in the 1700s. His “Give me liberty or give me death” has always been one of my favorite quotes. Our rights should never be taken for granted. This world is changing, but we can be loud and support the greatest nation on earth by simply going to vote. Imagine that -- so much power in an act that doesn’t take much time. The voting age changed the year I turned 18,
with the county clerk (West Virginia’s version of a Director of Elections/General Registrar) came to the high school to register these young voters. It was an exciting time for those of us who knew how important this opportunity would be. I’ll never forget the first time I went to vote. I was eager, enthusiastic and empowered. After all these years (that was 1974), I still feel that way when I cast my ballot. Again, I am not trying to influence any political preference within this space, I only ask that you be heard through your vote. Early voting continues and the polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3. So, go vote and proudly wear that cool “I voted” sticker.
Halloween is becoming a different kind of scary By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Halloween has become one of the biggest holidays in America. Never mind the fact it’s an unrecognized celebration, and not the first business or service has decided to supply a day off for a holiday that involves ghouls and goblins. But, one only has to drive down
a darkened avenue to realize that Halloween has become big business and increasingly glorified, a far cry from the simple excitement the holiday provided in my childhood. Not unlike our nation, Halloween is a conglomerate of differing customs and rituals, some darker than others, with origins across the globe. It seems as if everyone who arrived in America from who could count how

many distant shores each brought a bit of Halloween with them. As time passed, many of these international customs became instilled in our American Halloween tradition. The holiday enjoys a sort of cultish popularity that appeals to almost everyone, and the single evening has the mystical power to bring out the spooky in all of us. It’s hard to imagine another celebration that invokes the
sort of dedication that allows fullgrown human beings to dress like cats or flying bats. When I was a child, the holiday was exclusive, and parental involvement was limited to handing out candy while we were out collecting it. Realizing it’s a different world today, I suppose it’s hard to imagine a gaggle of kids taking over poorly-lit streets see SCARY, pg. 8

Railroad Park nears meeting match for grant On behalf of the Mid-Atlantic Railroad Park Community Committee, I’d like to extend our gratitude for the Ashland-Hanover Local’s editorial published Oct. 21, 2020. Your support of this exciting project has made a significant impact on our fundraising efforts, and we are close to meeting the necessary match for the $50,000 grant from the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation. The $100,000 total is a great start for getting park development underway. Your readers should know that the committee has plans to eventually expand the park to include historic sites such as the Beaverdam train station and Hanover Junction (now Doswell). We believe the economic activity driven by the park’s heritage tourism will benefit all of Hanover County. While the Downtown Ashland Association is the sponsoring organization for the park, we are proud to have the Hanover County Black Heritage Society and Ashland Museum as project partners. We have reached out to the Hanover County Historical Society as well. Interested readers can keep track of our progress and help us match the grant by visiting http://www.ashlandvirginia.com/railroad. Thanks again to the AshlandHanover Local for your editorial support! Hickory Grove rezoning poses serious issues The rezoning of a 51.5acre parcel for the proposed Hickory Grove mixed use development at the intersection of Providence Church Road and Route 54 poses serious issues for Hanover residents. In addition to 100 townhomes, approximately 79,000 square feet of “Anywhere, USA” commercial and retail would include a fast food res-

Traffic increase alone is a mammoth issue. Approximately 7,000 vehicle trips per day, mostly generated by the businesses, would be added to the already overburdened Route 54 corridor. East Ashland, approved in 2010, is expected to add over 33,000 daily vehicle trips. Halloween has replaced most of my childhood memories when the fuller the bag the happier I was. And the only thing that remains from those wonderful days of the 1950s is the smallest of reminders, a tiny tidbit of days gone by and a different kind of scary — a piece of candy corn. Some things don’t get better with time.

Supporter responds to success letter I’d like to thank Ted Mentz for taking the time to read and thoughtfully comment on my letter to the editor which pointed out just a few of the many, many accomplishments of our president, Donald Trump. Mr. Mentz did take exception to some of my examples: Those being record high employment and wage growth. Mr. Mentz points out that these “... are just trivial things that come and go.” He goes on to say, “Mother Nature has more effect on the economy than any president ...” A very interesting hypothesis. I did a quick check on yearly GDP (Gross Domestic Product) fluctuation’s for the past 30 years and some searches on major climatic events during the same period. There might well be a noteworthy correlation between GDP and the weather which I will leave to Mr. Mentz to substantiate. As to the other examples of President Trump’s accomplishments, Mother Nature had nothing to do with them. President Trump has and always has had the well-being of the American citizen first and foremost in his actions.
originally scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month. Please come prepared and observe the protocols for facial coverings (masks) and social distancing. ... and just in time for the upcoming holiday season.
Mr. Mentz continues on about the hijacking of the judicial system. You mean the judicial system that wasted over three years and $35 million of taxpayer money on the Russian Hoax? In closing, Mr. Mentz points out that, “What is happening is called the road to dictatorship.” I don’t see the country on a road to dictatorship, but what I do see is that we’ve already started down the road to anarchy that may lead to a totalitarian government. That’s why I and an overwhelming number of law enforcement officers and their organizations are supporting President Donald Trump this coming Nov. 3. Chuck Williamson Mechanicsville
Trump didn’t act immediately on coronavirus I have read the lengthy and convoluted letter from Martha Cole defending Trump’s handling of the coronavirus. I noticed that the writer used the adverb immediately to glowingly describe Trump’s actions. He did not act immediately. He was advised of the virus and its extreme danger but decided to sit on the information.
HANOVER -- Hanover County offers a Land Use Taxation Program under which qualified landowners can have their property assessed at “use value”, which may be lower than market value and reduce taxes owed. The application period for this program extends through Sunday, Nov. 1, with

People sickened and many died but he did not disclose what he knew. The actions the writer describes such as sending hospital ships and implementing the presidential power to have industries make PPE and ventilators occurred only after the virus was killing Americans in high numbers and hospitals were overwhelmed.. Trump disbanded the Federal Pandemic Preparedness Office established by President Obama to handle pandemics. He ignored the game plan left by Obama titled Playbook for Early Response to HighConsequence Emerging Infecting Disease Threats and Biological Incidents. That office suscessfully handled the threats of Ebola and Zika viruses and kept them from running amok in our country. Trump contracted COVID19 because he refused to follow the medically-sanctioned preventative requirements to wear a mask and to social distance. He did not volunteer to be a test subject for covid treatments. He was given treatments that the average person cannot get only because of the office he currently holds. The Democrats do not accuse Trump of creating the virus. He is factually guilty of hiding its severity and letting it get the chokehold on our
country that it has. Also, Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize is of no significance. Anyone can be nominated. In fact, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin was nominated in 1945 and 1948. Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was nominated in 1935. Adolf Hitler was nominated in 1939. If Trump had really accomplished anything of significance, he would have won the prize. Trump’s “great job” has resulted in the deaths of 221,000+ Americans from covid, 8.28 million COVID cases in our country, and 12.58 million Americans unemployed. Trump has destroyed our relationships with other countries and our allies. He sucks up to dictators especially Vladimir Putin. He looked the other way when bounties were put on the heads of American soldiers, okayed the invasion and slaughter of the Kurds who fought bravely beside out troops, and looked the other way when an American journalist was murdered, chopped up, and discarded. He is mentally unstable, financially obligated to shady characters around the world, and is dangerous to our democracy. He does not deserve another term. Teresa Jacobsen Mechanicsville

Populist conservatism attracts voter I voted for Trump in 2016 and I’ll vote for him again. I like his populist conservatism. Before, I would tolerate the old Republicans’ doctrinefree market philosophy only because they were pro-life on abortion, pro-gun, and proreligious freedom. The biggest complaint I’ve heard about President Trump is that he lacks dignity, collegiality, and propriety. How dare Trump fight for America’s interests! We on the right have tried dignity. There could not have been a man of more quiet dignity than George W. Bush as he got taken advantage of both domestically and abroad. We tried statesmanship. Could there be another human being on this earth who so desperately prized “collegiality” as John McCain? He lost big time. We tried propriety. Has there been a nicer human

In two on three cases, we lost. This is because, while we were playing by Robert’s Rules of Order, the Left has been engaged in a knife fight where the only rules are the radical rules of Saul Alinsky. With Donald Trump, the gloves are off. Donald Trump is America’s first wartime president in war on common sense versus political correctness. During wartime, things like “dignity” and “collegiality” go out the window. Ulysses Grant was a drunk whose behavior in peacetime might well have seen him drummed out of the Army for conduct unbecoming. Lincoln rightly recognized that, “I cannot spare this man. He fights.” Not only is Trump fighting for us, but he uses Alinsky’s rules against them by making it personal and using ridicule. If you don’t like President Trump’s personality in how he fights for us you can “mute” him when he comes on the news. However, under Biden, you couldn’t mute the tax increases, the lockdowns, the higher energy costs, the emphasis on identity politics,

Temporary boardwalk needs installed I would seriously like the Town of Ashland to request that the James Stanley Builders, who are currently developing a tract on Ashcake Road, be required to install a (temporary) boardwalk on the Stony Run Trail. They have turned this trail into a quagmire for months on end, rendering it unusable. There seems to be no end in sight to the muck and mud they have created along this formerly useful trail. This is a hidden gem in Ashland and negatively impacts the walkers and runners who used to enjoy this peaceful retreat. Tossing straw down does
Nature best replacements for monuments Now that Monument Avenue in Richmond has been essentially neutered, it is time to figure out what to do with the remaining open green spaces. Probably the least contentious path forward would be to keep the grass mowed, the curbs edged, and the trees trimmed, as necessary. However, pause should be taken to consider what monuments might be erected that are the least objectionable to the most people. Maybe the subjects of the new monuments can be found in nature. MEMORIES ARE FOREVER
Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com DAHLGREN – After 20 years of active duty service, former submarine service officer Paul Quinn decided to begin his civilian career at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) after personally experiencing the command’s responsiveness and impact to his needs as a warfighter. “The quality of workmanship I was provided, as well as the analytical quality, really impressed me,” said the Mechanicsville resident, recounting his first interaction with NSWCDD employees while on active duty. “When I retired, I knew I wanted to come back and work at Dahlgren. The people especially were incredibly responsive to fleet needs.” Ten years after making that decision, Quinn won the Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award for his responsiveness to the fleet’s requirements and “exceptional leadership and commitment to the Submarine

Quinn acts as the program director for the different strategic systems projects at NSWCDD. “This program is very different than other weapon system development programs because it’s actively doing its

anglers of the Commonwealth. At the east end of the next barren median island, erect a statue of a striped bass, a popular angler’s catch in the Chesapeake Bay. For those who fish the middle James, how about a statue in the middle of this block of a small mouth bass, with a sunfish by its side for the pond anglers? In recognition of the fly fishermen, the west end of this plot could have a multi-species statue that includes a brook, brown and rainbow trout. That block of Monument Avenue would have something for
everyone. Now for the bird lovers: How about a statue of the Commonwealth’s official bird, the cardinal, on the next unoccupied parcel of the median strip? To keep that end politically neutral, a blue bird would stand too. Finally, for the lovers of land-bound birds, on the opposite end, a statue of an ostrich in its most recognizable pose with its head buried in the sand. That statue could also honor Richmond politicians, past, present and future. John Wetlaufer Sr. Mechanicsville

His dedication to technical excellence, leadership and mentoring reflect great honor on himself, Dahlgren Division, and the United States Navy.” “I’ve always felt it’s important to be a positive influence on the community of people we work and live with every day,” said Quinn. “I see this award as an affirmation of that effort. I want the future that she lives in to be a bright one. It inspires me to continue to do all I can to positively impact the community and workplace,” said Quinn. Caitlyn Quinn also is a NSWCDD employee, recently transitioning to a full-time position after her involve-

Pathways is a program designed to provide degreeseeking students with early exposure to public service, educational experience enhancement, and possible financial aid. Within four months of degree completion, most interns receive a career appointment. Caitlyn Quinn says her dad encourages her to keep doing her best. “He is a very forwardthinking person, and I think that’s really rare nowadays. He strives to make everything he touches just a little bit better,” she said. “This award shows that his hard work and dedication are really paying off. I’m really proud and honored that he got this.”

“Remember that Oct. 31 is the last day to cast a ballot inperson at her office,” Smithson said. Dale Hargrove Alderman, chairman of the Hanover County Republican Committee, said, “The Hanover County Republican Committee started planning back in the spring to begin mobilizing for the Nov. 3 election cycle.” “Due to the COVID-19 crisis, we were not able to have our usual committee meetings until this fall; however, hundreds of volunteers have stepped up to help in what I think most Republicans see as the most consequential election in the history of our Republic,” she said. Alderman added, “Hanover County is a predominately Republican county where the local citizens are committed to the principles of the free enterprise system not the Socialist policies currently espoused by the Democratic Party. These policies represent an existential threat to our lives and to the lives of our children.”
“For that in mind, we are planning for a record turnout here in the county for Donald Trump for president, Rob Wittman for congressman and Daniel Gade for senator this Nov. 3,” she concluded. “The political fervor is heating up in Hanover County!” Daniel McGraw, chairman of the Hanover County Democratic Party, said. “On Sunday, Oct. 11, U.S. Senator Mark Warner and many distinguished politicians and political leaders met in Ashland to show support for Qasim Rashid, Mark Warner, Kamala Harris, and Joe Biden, all running on the Democratic ticket this year.” “And this year,” he continued, “an excellent Congressional candidate, Qasim Rashid, has set the tone for how to put together a solid campaign. Constitutional Amendment #1 Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to establish a redistricting commission, consisting of eight members of the General Assembly and eight citizens of the Commonwealth, that is responsible for drawing the congressional and state legislative districts that will be subsequently voted on, but not changed by, the General Assembly and enacted without the Governor's involvement and to give the responsibility of drawing districts to the Supreme Court of Virginia if the redistricting commission fails to draw districts or the General Assembly fails to enact districts by certain deadlines?

ANOVER -- On Dec. 1, 1763, a country lawyer from Hanover stepped from obscurity into the forefront of legal and political circles in Virginia. His name was Patrick Henry. The event that shaped his destiny was the trial of The Parsons’ Cause. Henry challenged the two most potent entities of colonial Virginia: the King and the clergy. The case proved to be one of the opening salvos of the revolution, and started Henry on the path of becoming the

Investigator receives Police Medal from APD chief By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ASHLAND – For the first time in his 13 years with the Ashland Police Department, Chief Douglas Goodman presented the Police Medal to Investigator Jason Helmlinger “for confronting an armed individual in such a way that it led to a successful conclusion with preservation of life.” Goodman said the Police Medal is awarded to an officer who places himself “in great personal danger.” In April, he said a subject was attempting
to break into vehicles when Helmlinger, who was in the area in plainclothes, stopped and put on his (Kevlar) vest. Upon reaching the location, he encountered an “individual hallucinating, exhibiting signs of paranoia.” Goodman said Helmlinger has undergone a “high level of technical training to control this situation.” He was able to provide a safe conclusion for the suspect, innocent bystanders, and himself. Nov. 30 is the deadline for lovers of America’s railroad history to meet the $50,000 matching grant for the Mid-Atlantic Railroad Park project in Ashland. Otherwise, the entire grant will be withdrawn. Research shows that the Railroad Park will strengthen our region’s economy for years to come, and the $50,000 matching grant from the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation is the very best chance to make this exciting attraction a reality. Please watch an informative video at ashlandvirginia.com/railroad. Then donate securely online, or write your check to Downtown Ashland Association and mail it to P.O. Box 33, Ashland VA 23005 (write “Railroad Park” on the memo line). Supportive organizations include the Downtown Ashland Association, Virginia Port Authority, Ashland Museum, Hanover County Black Heritage Society, CSX, Ashland Kiwanis Club, Marketing Ashland Partnership, and the Hanover County Historical Society. A permanent plaque will recognize donors of $5,000+ as Honored Founders and donors of $1,000+ as Honored Supporters. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated. Town Attorney Andrea Erard said the Foundation “felt it appropriate to try to make it whole and give him an easement as well as a dedicated easement entering his property from the rear.” There also was an overlap when the roof was redone. The resolution provides for the access easement, as well as an agreement between both parties that outlines additional roles and responsibilities as current and future neighbors. With an amendment to the height of freestanding signs, council unanimously approved the clarification of residential subdivision monument signs. Nora Amos, director of Planning & Community Development, said the number of signs per lot would be limited to one. Monument was defined as a solid structure made of brick, while freestanding is a sign not attached to a building and supported by uprights, brackets, poles, posts or the similar foundation mate-

tilted. There’s enough nitrogen for two more tries. Controllers liken the maneuver to a “high five.” The probe will remain at Bennu until next March, when it will leave orbit and begin a long voyage home. The mission profile calls for delivering the sample via parachute into the Utah desert on Sept. 24, 2021. Bennu itself is likely a rubble pile rather than solid. We believe from its almost black color that it is carbon rich, and the surface itself is strewn with rocks large and small. One challenge was to find a place with enough clear

rial in residential districts. She said the Comprehensive Plan addressed “how signs can be used to be aesthetically pleasing. Most subdivisions want to have their own sign, this will encourage them to limit the number of signs they get.” The Ashland Planning Commission recommended approval in September. Vice Mayor John Hodges brought up the issue of 8 feet being too high, and recommended council consider 6 feet in the residential district for freestanding signs. As the relocation to the new Ashland Town Hall approaches, Mayor Trivett suggested a moment of silence for “all of the focus of the community that has happened in this building.” Council went into closed session to discuss, consider, and interview prospective candidates for appointments to the Ashland Economic Development Authority pursuant to Virginia Code § 2.23711(A)(1). Bennu also is in a class of “Earth crossing asteroids” whose orbits intersect ours. There’s a small chance of colliding with Earth late in the 22nd century. By the way, this isn’t NASA’s first asteroid touch down. The Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) orbited the asteroid Eros for a year beginning in February 2000. As it neared the end of thruster fuel, the decision was made to try to land on the asteroid. (Note that this was never designed to land!) They succeeded on Feb. 12, 2001, and were able to collect data directly from the surface. And, it’s not the first

“Over 35% of the electorate in Hanover County has voted early. And that’s thanks, in no small part, to the Hanover
County registrar and the registrar’s office and all of their hard work to make voting easier and safer in Hanover,” he said. “How great would it be if 100% of eligible voters cast a ballot this election?”
McGraw said. “We are seeing Democratic signs throughout the county. Some vandals have attempted to tear down these signs. But, every time one is torn down, we put up two more … And people are donating to
Democratic causes.” He said,” Hanover County is the turning point for the Democratic Party. We are on the verge of true change.” Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
sample return mission from an asteroid. Japan’s Hyabusa (“Peregrine falcon”) returned a few micrograms from the asteroid Itokawa in 2010. Hyabusa2 is on course to return about 100 micrograms from the asteroid Ryugu, parachuting into the Australian Outback on Dec. 6, 2020. Lunar phases for November: Last Quarter on the 8th, at 8:46 a.m.; New Moon on the 15th, at 12:07 a.m.; First Quarter on the 21st, at 11:45 p.m.; Full Moon on the 30th at 4:30 a.m. This is accompanied by a penumbral lunar eclipse. The Moon will pass through the outer part of Earth’s shadow and dim slightly. All times are Eastern Standard. (Don’t forget to turn
back your clocks!) Predawn planet watchers can see Mercury and Venus to the southeast. Venus rises at 4 a.m., and will be the brightest thing in that direction until the Sun comes up. Mercury is lower in the sky. Mars will be due south around 9 p.m., the same time as Jupiter and Saturn are setting. Both are to the south emerging in evening twilight after sunset. Looking overhead at midmonth, about two hours after sunset you will find the Milky Way dividing the sky from northeast to southwest. Deneb and Vega are the two bright stars to the west of zenith, with Altair to the southwest marking out a rich triangle. Near Vega, a clear night and
steady hand with binoculars may enable you to see the Ring Nebula. This is an example of what will happen to our own Sun in another 5 billion years … as the fuel in the core is used up, the outer layers will eventually be expelled into an expanding planetary nebula. To the east of zenith, look for the Andromeda Galaxy, a faint smudge to the naked eye. This is actually a galaxy much like our own, over 100 billion stars yet dimmed by its vast distance of some 2 million light years. Even though it is the most distant object visible without a telescope, it is close by on the cosmic scale of things. Deneb marks the “tail” of the constellation Cygnus. The “head” is a faint binary called
Alberio, which is one of the most beautiful pairs you’ll see. With a small telescope, one star glows a brilliant blue while the other is bright orange. Cygnus lies in the general direction of the Sun’s orbit around the center of the galaxy, which lies in the direction of Sagittarius, which is just setting on the southwest horizon. Just rising to the east is bright Aldebaran, in the constellation Taurus. This is a harbinger of coming winter. By month’s end we will see Orion rising at this hour. five acres in size. Property that has been zoned Rural Conservation (RC) also can qualify for the Land Use program. If the land use is changed, the tax reduction must be repaid with simple interest for the current tax year and potentially up to the previous five tax years. About 3,616 parcels and 157,848 acres are currently enrolled in Hanover County’s Land Use Taxation program. This represents about 54% of the county’s total acreage. The total tax deferral realized by these property owners is about $5.3 million. of the pieces together. “When COVID-19 blew up the entertainment industry, we had to get creative about how to produce worthwhile entertainment, not only for the sake of training our students, but for our audiences who look forward to our shows every year. We elected to do a small cast, monologue-based play as our first offering of the season so that we could learn how to reinvent the arts for our school.” You might say the high school students began that reinvention last spring, when schools shut down just as their production of Game of Tiaras was approaching final “tech” rehearsals. Switzer and her cast and crew spun on a dime and planned the production of that play for an online audience, with student “techies”

Hard work, good attitude pays off for MLL By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – When the Mechanicsville Little League 10-year-old All Stars began their baseball practices this year, they all got a tee shirt with the slogan, “NOBODY RISES TO LOW EXPECTATIONS,” on the back. Manager Travis Holt had had high expectations for this team for the past three and for each of the three years, they rose to meet his challenge. On Sept. 27, they won the Tuckahoe 10-Year-Old Invitational championship, the third-straight postseason championship. If it weren’t for the COVID19 pandemic, the Tuckahoe title would have been the District V championship, but the kids aren’t complaining. They know what they have accomplished, going 18-0 in postseason play the past three years. “It’s just a good group of boys and a good group of families,” Holt said. “They play baseball all the time. They love baseball – and how they represented Mechanicsville Little League over the past few years has been incredible.” Holt said the core of the group came together in 2017. Even then, he could tell they were special. “I started coaching this All Star team four years ago in the 8-year-old tournament,” Holt

said. “Well, half the team, I think was 6 years old at the time. We went 4-2, in that tournament, and only lost two games by one run. … The way it worked out. We ended up winning the sil-

ver bracket championship out there. “Of course, we never really mentioned anything about it being silver bracket. They won the championship as far as they
were concerned, and they have been just pouring it on ever since.” In 2018, the team finished the job it started and won the Huguenot Little League Machine Pitch Invitational. Last year, it won the Atlee Little League 9-Year-Old Invitational. This year, the team – consisting of Hunter Cardoza, Jacob Clark, James Hersey, Bradley Hoge, Trace Holt, Chase
Hughes, Braiden Hunt, Owen Ludwig, Reid Lutton, Kaiden Myers, Kaleb Stanley, Braden Walton and Kaydin Whitby – faced a particularly tough opponent in Richmond Little League. But the arsenal of arms – Holt said he threw 11 pitchers in the tournament and possibly could have used the other two kids on the mound if he had had time – did what it needed to do, going 4-0 in pool play
with victories over Richmond (overcoming a 6-3 deficit for an 8-6 win), Atlee Little League (10-5), Tuckahoe National (132) and Huguenot Little League (10-0). Coming out of pool play as the top seed, Mechanicsville knocked off Atlee 8-1 in the semifinal. In the final, Mechanicsville came out flat, having, as Holt said, “the worst night to have our worst performance.” Richmond led going into the bottom of the sixth inning when Mechanicsville came up for its final at-bat. Holt’s boys did what they needed to do. “You can never count them out,” he said. “They’re just too good at the plate. Their baseball IQ is too high. And I believe we have the best defensive team that I’ve seen. These boys can play. It’s very impressive.” Some credit has to go to the manager. Holt himself has a history of building strong, competitive teams. There may be a good reason why. “I have always felt that no matter what you coach as long as the kids know you love them and would do anything for them they will do the same for you,” Holt said. “I always tell them I’m going to give you 100% all the time and I expect the same from you.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
Aggressive Red Wolves end Richmond Kickers’ season Red Wolves’ Mark Hernandez and Jason Ramos (assist) got behind the Kickers’ defense for the winner. “One of the things we needed to do tonight in order to make sure we made the final was we needed to win the game,” Sawatzky said. “In order to win the game, you need to score goals. You need to commit
to the attack. Their counterattack out of us getting forward was pretty efficient. Greg Hurst was very good tonight. We just didn’t have anybody on our side of the ball that was quite as effective as he was. “When you’re trying to win a game – and we’re always trying to win – you’re going to push forward, and we got caught in
transition a couple of times and they punished us for that.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com. Chattanooga 0 2 — 2 Richmond 0 1 — 1 CHA — Hurst (Doyle), 57th minute RIC — Anderson (Bolduc), 64th minute CHA — Hernandez (Ramos), 90th minute

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor The Richmond Kickers walked on to the pitch at City Stadium Saturday night in control of their fate. If they defeated the visiting Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, they would advance to the USL League One final against the Greenville Triumph SC. If the Kickers lost, their fate would depend on the kindness of strangers. The visitors Saturday night had no intention of being kind, however. Using an aggressive press and taking advantage of a Richmond lineup missing some of its offensive spark because of injuries, the Red Wolves spoiled the Kickers’ season with a 2-1 win. Afterward, the kindness of strangers failed to materialize. Union Omaha edged Inter Miami II 1-0 to clinch the other final berth and bring
Richmond’s season to an end. “I commend the guys for trying real hard and working to find goals in that game,” said Kickers’ head coach Darren Sawatzky. “We had a bit of a different lineup tonight based on injuries and that type of stuff. I thought it was enough to get the win tonight.”
From the start, however, Richmond struggled to get shot opportunities, while Chattanooga found plenty. Kickers goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald was busy, with six saves on the night – almost all in the first half. He had tremendous help from defender Wahab Ackwei, who deflected a number of other balls that might have gotten through. But in the second half, as Richmond aggressively tried to put some of its own pressure on the Red Wolves defense, Chattanooga wings twice slipped behind the Richmond defense for goals, with Greg Hurst – assisted by Conor Doyle – finding an opening in the 57th minute. Richmond’s Oalex Anderson and Matt Bolduc (assist) similarly combined for an equalizer in the 64th minute. Disaster struck in stoppage time. As with their first goal, the
