County offers answers to your questions about COVID-19 (Editor’s note: Today we launch a series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) submitted by Hanover County government, including the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, County Administrator John Budesky and Tom Harris, Hanover County public information officer. Harris has been working with The Mechanicsville Local to provide answers to COVID-19 vaccination questions. We thank the county for sharing this much-needed information with our readers.)
COVID-19 Vaccination Questions How do I know which vaccination phase I fall under? The Virginia Department of Health website offers a graphic, breaking down each phase as well as an online tool to help you determine which phase of the vaccination campaign you fall under. That online tool can be found here: https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/covid-19-vaccine/ see COVID-19, pg. 7

Members of Woody Hogg’s family gathered for this photo in December. Sadly, his son Tripp passed away on Sunday, Jan. 24. The Hogg family posed for this photo in December. A photo of Tripp and Kathie with their children can be found on page 8.
Family shares memories about his love and ‘Get busy livin’!’ (Editor’s note: The following was written by Kathie Hogg, the widow of well-known realtor Tripp Hogg of ERA Woody Hogg & Associates, and their six children: Oakleigh, Delaney and Elle Hogg and Mary Beth, Mandy and Josh Ratchford. Tripp Hogg, who was 52 at the time of his sudden death, received so much praise on
our Facebook page, www.facebook/mechlocal. com that the post of his obituary surpassed all previous in the number of views. As of Monday, Feb. 8, 31,585 people had been reached. Her father-in-law, Woody Hogg, has advertised with The Mechanicsville Local since its first publication in May 1984. We extend our most
sincere condolences to Kathie, their children and the entire Hogg family.) “Get busy livin’!” If you knew Tripp Hogg (Oakley Woodland Hogg III) or even had a conversation with him, you probably heard him say see TRIPP, pg. 8

From the managing editor
Don’t abuse free speech with wrong info By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ‘ve occasionally considered myself to be a bit of a conspiracy theorist. In reality, I guess the only event that I still question is the moon landing on July 20, 1969. I don’t lose any sleep over it and I certainly don’t argue with anyone as to whether the Eagle landed. My parents insisted I watch the historic event, which I didn’t question at the time. And let’s keep in mind I was five days shy of becoming a teenager. (Not always our most focused years.) Without being insensitive to the possible mental issues of those who publicly voice some really far-reaching conspiracies, I try to keep my mouth shut, or, as it were, my fingers from typing what’s running through my mind. So, today, let’s look at some of the comments that have been made by U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia. She has caused quite a stir
I
and, depending on what newspaper (I advocate for “Real News”) or news broadcasts, you’ve had at least a glimpse of what she “believes”. While I will share some of her comments, I want to start with what I consider heartless and without any sense of compassion. Before being elected to Congress, Greene followed and taunted David Hogg, a survivor of the Feb. 14, 2018, shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people died and 17 more were injured. Greene says it was staged, and makes the same claim about Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-six people were killed, including 20 children between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adult staff members. The young man was en route to the U.S. Capitol to meet with senators as he is very involved in gun control. We can’t even imagine the horror that students, administrators, educators and staff experienced that day.
As I’ve said before, I am not anti-gun. I was raised by a man who was a marksman in the U.S. Army Air Corps (now Air Force) and a member of the NRA. Dad always had rifles and pistols. Several national newspaper websites refer to Greene’s comments as right-wing conspiracy theories, often noting she supports QAnon, makes anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim remarks. In the “What did she say?” category: Greene attributed the horrific California wildfire in 2018 to laser beams. The Los Angeles Times wrote that Greene “speculated that the blaze might have been started by a laser beam in space.” A survivor watched her home go up in flames but did not see any laser beam strike the area. Of course, I’m a strong advocate for free speech, but don’t blatantly put out falsehoods in an attempt to bring more attention to yourself. There are so many sources available to learn the truth. Take the time to go that route.
Glenn Turner dared to be great with the Challenge By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist Not many noticed the small obituary in the local newspaper in a small community in Florida, and fewer still knew of the man named in the listing. Glenn W. Turner passed away at
his home on Jan. 8, 2020, the small article said. I wondered if this could be the same Glenn Turner who swept the country like wild fire back in the 1970s and ‘80s with a motivational program called Dare to Be Great that engulfed thousands of Americans and

became a lifestyle for hundreds of his followers. I, too, would be unaware of this information if it had not been for a hearty group of my friends who got on the Turner train in the late ‘70s, and dedicated themselves to something called the Challenge to

Questioning free and open government A free and open government -- who’s kidding who? Anyone that attended the recent “Lobby Day” at the State Capitol knows better. The show of force presented by various law enforcement agencies wasn’t there to prevent any violent protest. It had one purpose and one only – to intimidate those that showed up. Both the governor and mayor of RVA did their parts by claiming, “The sky is falling”. Where were these “leaders” last year when rioters and looters were destroying public and private property in RVA? Where was this show of force? Instead, they chose to present a show of force against people that were exercising their civil and constitutional rights to gather. They made downtown RVA look like central Europe in the 1950s and 1960s when we saw the Commies crushing protests in most violent ways. More? When Walmart was coming to Ashland it was a hot topic. Ashland Town Council gave the citizens lots of reasons to question their having an open government. I believe the town stood at 9-1 in opposition to Walmart coming here. Town council held a town hall meeting to see what the citizens wanted. I spoke and suggested that the town hold a referendum that would bind the council to follow the citizens’ mandate. The mayor said that was ridiculous and it would take too long, cost too much, etc. How long could it possibly take to count a thousand votes? Less than the average number of voters in any election in Ashland. Here was an excellent opportunity see LETTERS, pg. 27

Tripp enjoyed hunting, fishing, and participating in sports. As a well-rounded man, he played basketball, baseball, and was especially talented when it came to tennis. Throughout his youth he attended Battlefield Green Elementary, Stonewall Jackson Middle, and Lee-Davis High School. Growing up, he gained many close friends and prioritized maintaining these friendships up until his very last day. As the charismatic honor student he was, he touched the lives of both his peers and teachers. He was even elected “Most Likely to Succeed” by his classmates. During his four years at his beloved East Carolina University, he earned his degree in finance while being an active member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and was even Class President ’91. Tripp always carried ECU close to his heart. He and his dad held season tickets to the football games where he would flex his tailgating skills for anyone that would join him. Win or lose, he bled purple and gold. Later the family legacy would continue as two of Tripp’s six kids attended and graduated from ECU. Post-graduation, even with other opportunities, he decided to try his hand in the family business. He joined ERA Woody Hogg and Associates and built

his team, which is still running today. Tripp loved working there with his dad and stepmother, Pam Hogg, as well as his sister, all three of his stepbrothers (Bryan, Bradley, and Kris Boykin) and their wives (Tatiana, Ashleigh, and Lauren). Anyone that knows their business knows that once you are at ERA Woody Hogg, you ARE family. In 1994, Tripp married his first wife, Patty, with whom he had three beautiful girls, Oakleigh, Delaney, and Elle. In raising these girls, he participated in swim meets, coached many sports, participated in Indian Princesses, and collected “Best Dad Ever” treasures from all three. Later, Tripp married his

second wife, Kathie, who added three more kids to his family, Mary Beth, Mandy, and Josh Ratchford. Even with such a large household, Tripp always put his family first. He made it a point to attend all events no matter what, especially Sunday family dinner featuring something special he made on the smoker. Tripp lived for his family, his community, but most of all his God. Tripp was always a faithful and loyal servant and a devoted member of Cool Spring Baptist Church. Heaven gained an angel, and he is already serving oysters and throwing some party, sporting that big smile we all know and love.

Volunteers with the Hanover Sheriff's Motor Assist Unit and the Hanover C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) recently worked with the Hanover Department of Community Services assembling Community Care kits. The kits included face masks, hand sanitizer, and sanitizing wipes. The project was funded with CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act funding from the federal government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These volunteers coordinated and made ready about 9000 kits. Distribution of these kits include MCEF (Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions), deputies of the Sheriff's Office so they can provide for their senior citizen and church contacts, schools, churches, food banks, and other community organizations as well as many citizens of Hanover County. Thanks were extended to all those in the Hanover Sheriff's Motor Assist Unit and Hanover CERT for supporting this activity.

HCBOS denies CUP for Horseshoe Bridge venue By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER — The Hanover County Board of Supervisors unanimously denied a Conditional Use Permit that would have allowed the operation of an event venue off Horseshoe Bridge Road in the Beaverdam District following a public hearing last week. Owners Heidi and Lamerro Mason sought the permit, allowing them to host company meetings, baby showers, church gatherings, and other events in a 900-square-foot barn on their property purchased in 2018. The couple began hosting events and were contacted in 2018 and 2019 and advised of code violations prompted by complaints by adjacent neighbors, and subsequently applied for the permit and held community meetings with neighbors. The Hanover County Planning Commission denied the request in October of last year and the board deferred the matter for 60 days in November amid objections from some members. During community meetings and communication with county officials, neighbors expressed concerns regarding noise, lowered property values and traffic, but the predominant concern expressed was in regard to a set of neighborhood covenants that prohibited any use that would adversely affect other neighbors in the subdivision and specifically banned commercial operations. Mason presented a detailed plan for the operation at Mason Estates and defended his right to pursue the venue operation on his private property. After making further adjustments to a set of proffers that accompanied the application, Mason told supervisors the operation would be in compliance with county code.
PHHS Brick Memorial Ceremony set April 16
He noted a four-foot fence would not allow any trash to escape his property, and said sound tests had ensured the decibel level was well within code limits. Regarding the operation of a commercial operation on the site, a use prohibited in the restrictive covenants, Mason said his neighbor operates a for hire boarding stable for horses. An equal number of speakers for and against the application spoke during the public hearing. Bruce Spiller said she and her husband live about one-half mile from the Masons’ property and have resided on Horseshoe Road since 1955. After attending a community meeting last fall where noise meters confirmed the levels were well below accepted levels and speaking with the Masons, she was convinced the use was appropriate. “It appears to me that some of the complaints seem extreme, maybe not even valid, and that those complaints are coming from residents who rarely — if ever — even pass his property,” she said. “It appears that he has bent over backwards to accommodate those requests and had proposed significant changes to the way he will run his venue.” Mason has originally applied for a permit to host weddings and hold events in an adjacent tent to facilitate maximum guest requirements, but scrapped those requests in this final application. Events would be limited to 65 people with no more than 50 inside the barn and on more than one event per day could be held. Music would be limited to inside the barn and would end at 8 p.m., according to the revised proffers. Spiller did not offer excuses for Mason’s apparent failure to obtain the proper permits prior to hosting events, but said she believed in his current efforts to bring the operation into
compliance. “It’s a disappointment to me that Mr. Mason did not go through the proper channels to run his business,” Spiller said. “He should have. I can also understand some of the earlier concerns about noise, traffic and protecting property values,” she added, while noting the neighborhood is often inundated with noise from Patrick Henry High School and the Hanover Country Club. “I am ashamed that our neighborhood has not been open-minded,” she concluded. Sylvia Newman also lives in Beaverdam and said she was unaware of any events going on at the Mason site. “That’s how low impact it’s been to our neighborhood,” she said. “I live one mile from this property.” After being invited to a party at the site, Newman was pleasantly surprised. “I believe Mr. Mason is a man of his word and I think he will abide by these rules; and I am very disappointed by this neighborhood,” she said. But, other neighbors said the requested use violated the restrictive covenants and urged supervisors to deny the permit. Patricia Harper, a neighbor who resides adjacent to Mason’s property, said she fully supports the decision made last October to deny the application. “That decision came after five months of review, numerous meetings with surrounding neighbors, and as stated at the time of the decision, this is a venue that does not fit in with our small residential rural neighborhood,” Harper said. She noted the venue facility had been operating for two years in violation of county code, and said efforts to mitigate his neighbors concerns fall short in one major area. “What he cannot resolve is the valid concern
that this type of venue would adversely affect the property values of our small neighborhood community,” Harper said. Harper contended, since Mason continued to operate the venue after being cited by the county, the neighbors‘ confidence in his ability to operate by the rules in the future has been eroded. Supervisor Canova Peterson, Mechanicsville, approached the pending application as strictly a land use and appropriateness issue. “This is a land use case and we very much treasure our rural atmoPETERSON sphere in Hanover County,” Peterson said, pointing out that the venue business is primary in the Masons’ case. Ashland supervisor Faye Prichard said, “A CUP is something that no one is entitled to — it is an additional opportunity on your property. Ultimately, your neighbors bought their property with the full expectation that they should be able to live in it in the way they choose to.” Prichard said had there been no neighbor complaints regarding Mason’s request, the CUP would have likely been granted. “Ultimately, I don’t think the Conditional Use Permit is something that you are entitled to on this property.” Beaverdam supervisor Bucky Stanley said he had received 37 emails against the pending application and only three in support and moved to deny the request. The motion passed unanimously, Mason’s request was denied.

Hawks end regular season on high notes By Rob Witham for The Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – A tiny flow of water, consistently, over millions of years, can create a wonder like the Grand Canyon. In an extremely condensed version of this act, Hanover boys basketball earned the top seed in Region 4B’s South Section with a pair of solid wins to end their regular season at 7-2, besting Mechanicsville 58-36 and outlasting Patrick Henry 57-53. In defeating the Mustangs, it was drip after drip on defense to allow the offense to build a lead that was never threatened and ensure a playoff berth. “Our zone, our defense, is by far our greatest strength as a team,” said junior forward Owen Deshazo. “It’s not your standard zone, and it took me a couple of practices to get used to it.” Deshazo explained that the zone employed by head coach Michael Rohr takes advantage of his players’ athleticism and length, especially at the wings. With enough disruption, the defense begins paying dividends off the glass. “What really stands out of our zone is how we rebound out of it. In nine games, we only got outrebounded twice,” Deshazo said. The Hawks were methodical against the Mustangs, slowly building their lead, five after one period, 15 at the half, and 20 after three periods. More impressively was the parade of

The victorious Hanover Hawks celebrate their 51-49 victory Thursday as the dejected Patriots walk off the court, losers for the first time this season.
scorers. Michael Patrick had eight points, Trevor Brooks seven, and Grant Belcher six as seemingly everyone found the basket. It was a much closer affair with Patrick Henry Thursday, as the Patriots, led by Myles Derricott’s 20 points, held a 27-26 lead at the half. But seniors Brooks and Braniel Santos paced Hanover, Santos leading the Hawks with 13 points. Deshazo gives a nod to Coach Rohr for what he’s meant to the team in this most unusual of seasons. “He’s an extremely intelligent basketball coach who always brings his energy and
intensity to practice and games. Every day, he preaches to be better than the day before. He does not preach about winning or losing.” Rohr’s former team, the Hanover girls varsity team, just missed out on making the playoffs, so their “postseason” was a chance to hand unbeaten Patrick Henry its first loss of the season Thursday night. The Hawks rode a strong start to a 17-11 lead before Patriot junior guard Logan Nuckols drained a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to draw Patrick Henry to within three at 17-14. The bucket was part of a 12-0 Patriot run to give the home team the lead. Just before
half ’s end, Julia Mardigian finished a 3-on-2 fastbreak for Hanover to cut the Patriots’ lead to 28-23 at intermission. Patrick Henry (8-1), fed center Jessica Osuanah early in the third period to a pair of baskets that helped keep the lead. But Hanover responded with a triple from Julia Mardigian to tie the game at 34 with 2:19 left in the period. The trey was part of a 9-0 Hawk run to retake the lead, ending at the buzzer with another Nuckols score. It was 38-36 Hanover, the stage set for a fantastic finish. With 4:28 left, Osuanah was fouled, and made one of two free throws to give Patrick
Henry a 43-42 lead. Two free throws from Adrianna Jacobs of Hanover, then two from Nuckols, made it 46-45 Hawks with 2:36 remaining. A minute later, Ava Smith gave the Patriots a one-point lead, which Patrick Henry held when calling timeout with 1:02 left, trying to clinch the unbeaten season and the top seed in Region 4B’s South Section. But the Hawks got the ball back and Jacobs scored inside with 34 seconds left to give Hanover the lead for good at 50-49. Jacobs forced a steal 19 seconds later. Suddenly the Patriots were in desperation see HAWKS, pg. 18

Atlee girls claim Region 5B championship ished fifth. Her teammate Bri Luellen finished sixth in allaround standings. By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – It’s been a strange year, but the strangeness did not interfere with Hanover County’s four high school swim teams finding postseason success. Atlee’s girls prevailed in the Region 5B championships at SwimRVA Thursday, with the Raider boys coming in third. Hanover’s boys finished second and the Hawk girls third in the Region 4B championships at the Jeff Rouse Center in Stafford, also Thursday. The Raiders were helped by a last-minute change that allowed all teams to enter more swimmers in individual events. Originally, each team was allowed three participants in each individual event. Two days before the meet teams were told they could instead bring five. “They changed it, I guess, because there weren’t that many people going,” said Atlee head swim coach Karen Seeber. “We called everybody in to practice on Tuesday because originally, it was just that Monday and Tuesday were just going to be for regional swimmers only. We called everybody in and then basically redid entries, which enabled us to have the depth that ... really secured the win for the girls.” Another change in the usual meet program was that there were no relays at the 5B championships. The Raider girls had three winners in four events: Maggie Ivie in the 100-yard freestyle with a 54.1 finish and in the 100 backstroke in (58.89), Molly Ivie in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.22), Alison Harvey in the 100 butterfly (59.51). On the boys side, Brock Rempe was the Raiders’ only winner. He claimed the title in the 100 breaststroke in 58.02,

In addition to Rempe, the Raider boys will be sending Jason Brown, Taylor Caten, Kennon Downes, Patrick Herndon, Jace Hollinger and Jack Pritchett. Patrick Henry had the only county winner of the meet – Amanda Barnard with a 2:05.82 finish in the 200-yard individual medley and a 5:05.28 finish in the girls 500-yard freestyle. The local teams were propelled by a number of second-place finishes – Hanover especially. The Hawks’ successes began the first event of the day with the boys 200 medley relay Sam Castle, Alex DeStephanis, Ben Gordon and Ben Schoenwiesner, who finished second in 1:41.95. The Hawk boys’ other two relay teams likewise finished second: the 200 freestyle relay team of Henry Atkinson, Schoenwiesner, Nathaniel Eliason and DeStephanis, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Gordon, Nicholas Ligday, Castle, Eliason). Dillard was also runnerup in the 100 freestyle. The Hawks will be sending 13 -- seven boys and six girls – to the Class 4 championships at Christiansburg Aquatic Center Saturday, and that is good, but for Hanover head coach George Massey, the best thing is that every one of the 19 swimmers at the regional bested their previous times. “It was outstanding to see what they accomplished,” Massey said. “I told them what an outstanding job they did – they did 100% best times – and just how proud I was of their swims. ... I couldn’t have asked for more from them.” Mechanicsville High School’s Logan Deal finished second in the 50 freestyle.

Midlo wins title, but Raiders send 7 to states By Zach Joachim Richmond Times-Dispatch CHESTERFIELD – Midlothian wrestling won its first team regional championship since 1987 on Saturday at the Class 5, Region B meet at Matoaca. Trojans coach Christopher Burks said the way the meet was playing out, they knew the team title would come down to the last few matches. Prince George finished second with 218 points to Midlothian’s 220. Atlee placed third with 170 points. “It literally came down to our next-to-last match,” Burks said, speaking of the secondplace match at 132 pounds. The Trojans’ Jackson Foldes pinned Matoaca’s Brian Emerson in 1:34 to give Midlothian the decisive team points. “It took us a few minutes to put the math together to figure out that we were going to win. We knew when he [Foldes] won that, that was big, but we weren’t quite sure until a couple matches later.” Burks has been the head coach at Midlothian for three years, and said he’s not sure what classification that 1987 regional title was in. An old banner in the gym says that’s the last time it happened, so Saturday’s title would appear somewhat historic. Burks did say this is “absolutely” the program’s most significant accomplishment in his memory. “We keep taking strides forward, it’s very good team-wise,” Burks said, adding that the big accomplishment last year was finishing in the top 10 at the state meet. “This year, we get the regional championship, and hopefully, we finish even better at states [Feb. 18]. And keep building on that, keep growing.” Six Trojans took home regional titles — Chris Lilly (120); Knox Berry (126); Robbie

Painter (152); Crew Gregory (160); Ashby Berry (170); and Anthony Swartz (182). They’ll all advance to the state meet at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, as will Foldes. The top two finishers in each weight class advance to the state meet. Burks said Painter’s victory at 152 pounds stood out to him. It took Painter triple overtime to overcome Atlee’s Will Rittenhouse in the title match. Painter got a key escape in the third overtime and won 5-4. “It was quite an intense match, two good guys wrestling, went into the overtime, which made it a lot of fun,” Burks said. Atlee advanced seven wrestlers to the state meet, including four regional champions — Mateo Duarte (106); James Haynie (113); Liam Harris (138); and Alex Frowert (145). Rittenhouse, Hayden Morris (170) and Daniel Martinez (182) placed second in their classes. Harris beat Prince George’s Alex Noblin in the 138-pound title match by a 10-0 major decision. The win was a moment of redemption for Harris, who
failed a concussion test last year while he was winning his regional finals match and had to drop out. “The title match was a big thing for me this year, considering that I had a really unfortunate ending last year,” Harris said. “I just went out there looking for team points. It was big for myself, but it was more of a team thing for me. We won it last year, and I wanted to make sure we’re still doing well this year.” Frowert is Harris’ workout partner, and the two trained hard together during the past year alongside VMI wrestling’s Robbie Adelstein. Throughout the offseason, they put in extra work, pushing each other toward the goals of regional and state titles. Harris finished third in the state, and Frowert fourth last season. Those two are also close with Haynie, who finished third last year. Harris said the three have their sites set on state titles this time. “We all came up just a bit short last year, so for all three of us to win a regional title was
big,” Harris said. “But we’re looking for bigger here in the next couple weeks.” Harris added he can’t say enough about the impact young Raiders coach Gabe LaVey — the 2010 All-Metro wrestler of the year while at Hanover — has had on Atlee wrestling. “He’s really transformed this program, from almost nothing to a lot of great, great wrestlers coming out of the area,” Harris said. “The team is going to do well this year at states, and work isn’t stopping now.” Burks said the meet’s environment was strange compared to years past — there were only seven teams competing, and no fans in attendance. “But it was good, it was fun, you’ll take a championship any way you can get it,” Burks said with a laugh. Halsey wins Region 4B title SPOTSYLVANIA – Champion Powhatan and runner-up Eastern View may have dominated the Region 4B wrestling championships at Spotsylvania High School
Saturday but Hanover County’s three teams made their presence felt in the team scores and one wrestler brought home a region title. Hanover’s Aden Halsey was the county’s only Region 4B champion, winning the 220pound title by pinning Eastern View’s Lance Deane in 4:10. Three of Halsey’s teammates – Luke Hart with a second-place finish in the 152-pound class, Jacob Epperly with a fourth in the 195-pound class and Simon Siler with a sixth in the 285pound class – also scored to lead the Hawks to an eighth-place finish. Despite not having any champions, Mechanicsville High School finished better than Hanover in the team standings with scoring performances in
11 of the 12 weight classes in which the Mustangs competed. They were led by two thirdplace finishes: Jacob Koenig in the 120-pound class and Wyatt Mesco in 160 pounds. Mechanicsville had a slew of fourth-place finishers: T.J. Conrad (126 pounds), Drew Kozubal (132), Dominic Bischoff (138), Binisa Ngwa (145), Kyle Whitlock (182) and Joseph Elaal (285). Three Mustangs finished sixth: Carter Walton (106 pounds), Ryan Magill (113) and Adam Elaal (220). Patrick Henry finished 11th with three Patriots scoring. Lorenzo Verdelotti finished second at 160 pounds. Justin Morgan finished third at 145 pounds and Dillon O’Keefe finished sixth at 126.

cars each weekend, head south usually to North or South Carolina, join others and travel the state recruiting people to join the challenge. I was never tempted to join them, although they would visit my small apartment in the Fan on a regular basis in an attempt to gain my support. My problem was the vague nature of the venture and why it was necessary to invest thousands of dollars so I could eventually become rich. Obviously, I’d never heard of a Ponzi scheme. For months, my friends spent every weekend traveling the backroads of the Carolinas in a high energy house party
that left them almost exhausted by Sunday night. One of my friends finally caved to their constant persuasive tactics and agreed to join them on a weekend jaunt. He described a nightmarish sequence of events where overfilled buses stopped at small venues and overran the place with unbridled enthusiasm to the point of hysteria. “Every time the bus stopped, all the people got out and ran around the bus yelling “Money, money, money,” my friend said. After one night on the road, he rented a car and drove back to Richmond. And, then as suddenly as it had started, it all ended and there was never another mention of the Challenge or Glenn Turner. I was never sure how many of
them invested and how many just took the bus rides hoping for a stray million. What had once been a source of pride and motivation for this group was now a sort of badge of shame, or so it seemed. To this day I’ve never heard one of them mention the Challenge or Glenn Turner. I can only assume it didn’t end well for them. Later I learned that Glenn Turner had been on the Feds’ radar for many years and barely escaped prison time in the early 1970s for running fraudulent schemes in Florida. His luck finally ran out for good in the mid-1980s when he was imprisoned in Arizona for similar activities. After six years in prison, Turner returned to the moti-
vational speakers circuit minus the Lear Jet and reported $300 million of wealth. The Florida castle he began as a symbol of his influence sat largely uncompleted. But, Turner kept selling. Sure the crowds were older, and smaller, but the Georgia sharecropper who had been to the top of the success ladder and also experienced the lower rung never lost belief in his power to be great. At a seminar in the 1990s, Turner told a sparse crowd who paid $39 to hear his get rich tips that life was more about happiness and less about wealth. He told them to find one, then the other will follow. “If a man with a hairlip and an eighth-grade education can be happy, so can you. I like myself. Do you like yourself?”

COVID-19 vaccine is available to you. In general, side effects and effectiveness for the currently available vaccines are very similar. I have already signed up to receive my vaccine, when will someone contact me to schedule my appointment? Someone from the health department will contact you as soon as it is your turn and when vaccine supplies are available. In the meantime, we ask that you check your spam email folder and check for any missed calls or voicemails from numbers you don’t recognize. Some scheduling emails and phone calls are
being missed. I registered for my vaccine on the VDH website, do I need to register again through my local health district? No. If you have already registered online through another VDH website, you do not need to register a second time. I think I registered online but never received a confirmation email. You will not receive a confirmation email after registering online. However, you will receive an email with scheduling instructions once it’s your turn in the database. If you are unsure if you have already registered, you can register online again. see COVID-19, pg. 21

The Hanover County COVID-19 Call Center is being staffed by Hanover County employees, Goochland employees, and volunteers. Where can I get tested for
COVID-19? The Virginia Department of Health has created a listing of testing sites in the area. The can be found by visiting: https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/ coronavirus/covid-19-testing/ covid-19-testing-sites/ How many vaccines have been given to date? cine-summary/ Will there be any accommodations at the vaccination site for those will impaired mobility? Accessibility will vary depending on location, however, the health department does try to accommodate those with mobility issues. Please discuss any special needs with your appointment scheduler or alert a parking attendant when you arrive at the vaccination center. Once I arrive at a vaccination center, how will I know where to park or where to go?
Will I remain in my vehicle? Protocol for vaccination clinics vary from location to location, however, for events held by Chickahominy Health District/Hanover Fire-EMS, there will be parking attendants instructing residents where to park and explain to them when they can enter the building. How early do I arrive before the appointment time? Will I be waiting hours like at the RIR event? You should arrive at the vaccination center at the time
of your appointment (not earlier). We will do everything we can to minimize the wait time, however, there are sometimes unforeseen circumstances that may arise that could result in a longer wait time. It is our hope that residents will only need to wait about the same amount of time they would expect to wait at a routine medical appointment. How many other people will be at the vaccination clinic at the same time as me? It’s difficult to determine how many other people will
be at the vaccination clinic at the same time. We hope to increase the number of vaccinations per hour we administer as we get further along in the process. There will always be systems in place to ensure proper social distancing. Can I request my vaccination be administered at the old Food Lion location in Ashland? If the location of your vaccination appointment does not work well for you, you can decline the appointment see COVID-19, pg. 27

If you have already signed up to receive the vaccination and supplied an email address, you will receive an email with scheduling instructions when it’s your turn and as vaccinations supplies are available. If you did not supply an email address, someone will call you to schedule your appointment. The health department is currently vaccinating Phase 1A and beginning to vaccinate those in Phase 1B. Since Phase 1B accounts for about half of the state’s population, it could take weeks or months to get all those who are currently eligible to be scheduled
and vaccinated. Please be patient.
The mayor and other council members were defeated in the next election and the mayor still can’t figure why. With 90% of the voters opposed to the project, town council saw fit to OK the project anyway. So much for that rhetoric, “A government for
and by the people.” If our federal government wants to maintain its integrity and honor, why can’t we have an election where the legal citizens come in and fill out a ballot and it’s put into a box, not any type of electronic card readers, and at the end of the day the votes
Why are other people getting vaccinations, and I am not? Currently the health department is beginning to schedule and vaccinate those in Phase 1A and 1B. Phase 1B is a large portion of the state’s population, making up about half of Virginia’s residents. Since the current group is so large and at this time vaccine supplies are less than the current demand, it could takes weeks or more to get all those in Phase 1B vaccinated. How will I know my registration was received? Community members can now request a copy of their survey responses to be emailed to them (if they have email) as a way to confirm their information was submitted. This is a new feature added on Feb. 2, 2021. At this time, we are unable to provide a confirmation for those who registered prior to Feb. 2. Requests for confirmation is the very last step when completing the sign-up survey and is optional.
That would end all the speculation and questions that still linger after our most recent presidential election. We can certainly wait an additional day for the results if they erase any doubts about the legitimacy of the count. I don’t care what network
wants to report the results first. I want an honest and open election that leaves no doubts in the voters’ minds as to who won. Can that be such a difficult request of a “Free and Open Government”? Buddy Cousins Ashland
What happens if they can’t make the first vaccine appointment? The Chickahominy Health District will continue to invite residents to future clinics, if they missed their first appointment.
