HANOVEDR -- As the county marks its 301st Birthday, Hanover County is learning from its past and building toward its future. This also could be said of Hanover DASH. Hanover DASH has been making history since Dec. 12, 2019, when it began offering specialized transportation services to adults 60+ years of age and persons with short-term or long-term disability. This is the first formal public transportation offered by the county. Since its launch, over 4,540 rides have been completed to date. see DASH, pg. 4

Teresa F. “Teri” Smithson, VREO, Director of Elections/General Registrar, told The Local earlier that she didn’t expect much of a turnout on the 8th. “Historically, Hanover County has less than 20% turnout for these types primaries.” Ballots may be cast in-person at the Early Voting Center. “You no lon-

HANOVER -- Beginning July1, the Hanover County School Board will welcome two new members, both announced at last Wednesday’s regular meeting of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors meeting at the Administration Building. Steven Ikenberry will serve as the Cold Harbor representative and Bob May will represent the South Anna District. Ikenberry, a retired Lee-Davis High School teacher and coach with 28 years of service in county schools, will replace Norm Sulser, who retired after 16 years of service on the school board and 24 years as a Hanover County reserve deputy. May replaces current South Anna representative Kelly Evko, who was appointed by South Anna supervisor Sue Dibble last year and placed her name for consideration for the pending appointment. “Having served on the school board for 6½

years, I think I have a pretty good idea of what it takes to be a successful and effective school board member,” Dibble said before announcing her selection. “Some of those qualities I believe are important are a good sound business mind with experience in preparing and managing budgets, a proven leader in business and in the community, a good listener with excellent communication skills, and, finally, a team player attitude.” Dibble said one of the three candidates in the South Anna District “rose to the top.” May and Evko were joined by Aleisha Miles as nominees for the appointment. “This particular nominee in the South Anna District is a business owner with extensive management and financial experience and has a Master’s in Business Administration,” Dibble said prior to announcing May as her choice. “He is a retired lieutenant colonel with 30 see HCSB, pg. 8

New technology for complex aortic valve surgeries is a game-changer Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com M E C HA N I C S V I L L E -- Longtime Mechanicsville resident Carolyn Pendleton knew she had a disease known as asymptomatic aortic stenosis. One day in February 2020, she was walking in her yard at her house and she collapsed. The stenosis had progressed, and it was worse, and Carolyn was brought into the emergency room at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center (MRMC) on Valentine’s Day. It was determined by her health care team, led by Brody Wehman, M.D., cardiac surgeon at MRMC, that Carolyn would need an open surgery on her heart. The timing of her surgery luckily coincided with approval of a new device which became available at Bon Secours to treat exactly what Carolyn had – a severely dilated aortic root, also known as an aneurysm. Dr. Wehman is the first cardiac surgeon in Central Virginia to introduce this new cutting-edge technology for patients in need of a complex cardiac surgery that involves replacement of their aortic valve, aortic root and the ascending aorta. The KONECT RESILIA aortic valve conduit (AVC) was approved by the FDA in July 2020 and is the first ready-to-implant solution for aortic root aneurysms. “We are excited that our team at Bon Secours is the first in the central Virginia to use this new product,” continued Dr. Wehman. “Implementing

this technology at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center allows us to provide a straight-forward solution for complex valve procedures and provides our patients with the best treatment possible.” The KONECT device represents a meaningful advancement that offers surgeons a preassembled device with two leading technologies, which can streamline treatment for patients requiring this complex and technical procedure. In addition, the KONECT device also offers benefits to the patient with the advanced RESILIA tissue, which incorporates integrity-preservation technology that may help improve valve durability. The RESILIA tissue technology also allows devices to be stored under dry packaging conditions, facilitating ease of use during patient

care. It has helped surgeons like Dr. Wehman treat patients, like Carolyn, with valve disease and a combination of issues with the aorta. “Prior to having this device, surgeons would have to manually sew together the prosthetic valve and aortic root replacement during the surgery, often in an emergency setting,” said Dr. Wehman. “With the KONECT device, the aortic valve, aortic root and ascending aorta replacement are already preassembled as one continuous prosthetic heart valve and replacement aorta, greatly simplifying the procedure and streamlining an otherwise complicated surgery.” For Carolyn, who underwent a significant open heart operation, the use of the device shortened her operative time. see AORTIC, pg. 4

From the managing editor

This ’56 model is preparing for a big day By Melody Kinser Managing Editor ince I’ll be on staycation when this week’s edition arrives at your home, I’m writing the column on Tuesday, May 25. What stands out about this date is that I will officially become a senior citizen in all regards in exactly two months. There are days when my head is spinning with all the mail and email about approaching my 65th birthday. I welcome the information from the Social Security Administration and Medicare, but a retirement date is a discussion for my superiors at the Richmond Times-Dispatch. My plan isn’t in the near future.

S

In the meantime, I do get amused by the flood of life insurance policy offers. Let’s see . . . if I’m dead, do I really care?! Nope! I don’t have a spouse or children. My investments are already designated to the beneficiaries, so “No thanks” on the life insurance. My will is specific in what I bequeath. I told a good friend about a year ago that I was leaving my designer handbags to her. She said, “Oh, Mel, you don’t need to do that” -- pause -- “but thanks.” I got a chuckle out of her response. Yeah, as I’ve gotten closer to No. 65, thoughts often turn to reminiscences, especially the high school and college years. Through social media, I have reconnected with many classmates and got-

ten to know others. What a blessing! A frequent joke is about how early bedtime has become, when it doesn’t seem that long ago that we were going out dancing at 11 p.m. or later. Such was life in a small town. Great memories! Seriously, though, this has been a major learning experience as I work my way through the processes of preparing for 65. I’m often reminded that my dad left us at 63 and my sister at 58. Do I expect any significant changes in my life at 65? No, not really. I still plan to work and enjoy every day as much as possible. I don’t need life insurance, because, as a favorite gospel song says, “I’ve got my ticket” (as in my Bible). Age is just a number -- here’s to 65.

Offering advice to graduates is not time sensitive By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist When I graduated from high school decades ago, my head was filled with advice, most of it timely and pertinent, but, admittedly, long forgotten. As I walked through a room of family members and friends shortly after the ceremony, an old friend of the family tapped me on the shoulder

and whispered his version of graduation words to live by. “Hey, kid, don’t take no wooden nickels,” he said with a gritty smile on his face. It’s odd that I remember those words of wisdom today, and most of the important life advice I received seems to elude me. Looking back, I’m sure the misplaced words of encouragement were well focused, and, if followed,

would have made life easier at some points. But advice is a doubleedged sword, and if you decide not to take it you usually find out the same lesson for yourself. Some of us take the advice and find a need to challenge its validity. That’s all part of the process. Even at this late stage in my life, now the father of four children, I am reluctant

to offer any advice to this year’s Class of 2021, but I am resourceful enough to call on the wisdom of others to provide some sound, and sometimes humorous, graduation thoughts. “individuality” is the key to success. -- Robert Orben Your families are extremely proud of you. You can’t imagine the sense of relief they are experiencing. Audit farce must stop if we want our vote to count It is really getting old, being forced to constantly justify having doubts about the 2020 election. The people who say an audit will jeopardize our vote and is fraudulent are the same ones that forced us to put up with the four-year investigation of the 2016 election. Are we wrong to have our doubts? Obama received 69,000,000 votes in 2008, in 2020 Trump received 74,000,000 votes and Biden received 81,000,000 votes. In 2008, Obama won 873 counties, in 2020 Trump won 2,497 counties, and Biden won 477 counties. Both Obama and Trump won 18 of 19 bellwether counties. Biden won 1 of 19 bellwether counties. Both Obama and Trump won Florida, Ohio, and Iowa. Biden lost Florida, Ohio, and Iowa. We saw affidavits in the hundreds and other evidence of bad behavior in the election. We saw several states with Trump leads mysteriously shut down in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia at the same time around midnight, and then open a few hours later with Biden miraculously ahead! We saw judges ignore the results and constitutional laws violated. We saw rallies, boat parades, and one auto rally 95 miles long for Trump, and it means nothing? So tell us again how Biden actually won 81,000,000 votes and lost so many algorithms. And tell us why we are so evil and anti-American for asking that questions? Daniel Baumann Mechanicsville

With supplies of vaccine exceeding demand in Hanover County, County Administrator John Budesky said the county’s vaccination efforts will begin to wind down beginning this month. The Ashland location will be open through June, but most of that period will be spent dispensing second shots for those who have already received their first dose. “There’s been a lot of hard work over these past 14 or 15

months since we declared a state of emergency,” Budesky told supervisors. “It took a lot of volunteers . . . a lot of staff and it took a lot of people working together and, sometimes, that’s the most proud moment we have when we see residents coming together to help each other.” Those efforts began when county officials realized that health officials were overwhelmed by the vaccination initiative and there was a need for the county to assist in delivering the shots. “We were one of the first counties in the Commonwealth to step up and open a vaccination clinic for our community and a call center for our residents,” Budesky said. tion in Ashland for the clinic and the many volunteers who manned that site for weeks. “It has taken thousands of people to pull this off over the past five of six months,” Budesky said. A thank you celebration for all of those who participated in the efforts is planned for June 25 with more details to follow. Budesky said the requests for appointments has steadily decreased in recent weeks and announced the end is in sight for the vaccination effort sponsored by the county. “What we promised the community was we were going to be there until the demand languished . . . and we are seeing that. We have far more vaccination now than we have folks that have continued interest in it and our community partners . . . have stepped up and are offering

substantially more shots than even the county and health department operated clinics,” Budesky said. “Within the next two weeks our operations at the Hanover Vaccination Clinic will come to an end,” the county administrator said. Second shot appointments will be available through June. “While our efforts come to a close, we don’t want to forget all of the challenges we worked through and the efforts of many people in our community. I’m proud of our team here at the county — Jim Taylor’s leadership from county administration and the board for its support in this process,” Budesky said. “All I can say is thank you to our community for stepping up and really making a difference.”

We are writing today to address the latest COVID-19 directives that the state recently issued regarding mask requirements and capacity limits. We hope this will help to eliminate any uncertainty or confusion you may have.

when indoors on school property, even if they are fully vaccinated. This continues to be due to the low vaccination rates among children. 2. Individuals who are not fully vaccinated must continue to wear a mask while outside if they are unable to maintain at least 6 feet of distance from another person. z Please note that guidance from the Virginia High School League may differ slightly from the Virginia Department of Education guidelines in relation to participation in athletic competitions. If you have any questions, please contact your coach or athletic director. Economic Development office kicks off Shop Local campaign MECHANICSVILLE -- Hanover County launched the Shop Local – Here In Hanover, VA campaign to emphasize the impact that buying from neighborhood businesses has on the greater community. Hanover County’s Department of Economic Development will showcase a variety of local establishments, as well as promote a weekly giveaway contest aimed at engaging residents to promote their favorite spots in the county. This campaign recognizes the importance of supporting small businesses, the jobs they help create, and the culture they foster in our communities. To bolster this message, the campaign incorporates a Shop Local video, the Here in Hanover, VA App with listings of various businesses, as

well as various marketing materials to display and use on social media. “Overall, small businesses make up two-thirds of new jobs created nationally and almost 44% of GDP (gross domestic product). Locally, our existing businesses continue to be the backbone of our economy here in Hanover County and we are always looking for new and creative ways to support their growth and success. I encourage citizens to purchase locally when possible. These revenues support important community priorities, including our Sheriff ’s Office, Fire and EMS, Hanover schools, and our community-based services. HANOVER -- A unique agreement between Hanover County and the Washington Capitals professional hockey team will result in improvements being made to a valued roller hockey rink at Courthouse Park. The Matthew & Daniel Barton Memorial Rink was built 20 years ago in honor of Matthew and Daniel Barton, the sons of Doug and Carol Barton who tragically lost their lives to disease at a young age. Both Matthew and Danny were hockey enthusiasts who loved to play. Doug and Carol Barton coordinated the community fundraising and donated the rink to the county. Hanover County Parks and Recreation Director Derek Stamey noted that the Barton rink has served the community for the past 19-plus years as a place for both youth and adults to enjoy the game of inline hockey. He said it also has been utilized for many purposes such as middle school hockey, tournaments and pick-up hockey. ing will be provided to all elementary and middle schools in the Hanover County Public Schools division, as well as Hanover Parks & Recreation. Hanover County will be responsible for removing and/ or repairing existing boards, fencing, brackets and surface, installing footings for the new board system. The board committed to keeping its facility where it is (at the entrance to Courthouse Park) and operating for at least 20 more years, and will allow the Capitals logo to be displayed on the site. Barton family and donated by Doswell Energy Center. The total amount invested in the rehabilitation of the Barton Memorial Rink will be $144,200. Cold Harbor District Supervisor Michael Herzberg called it a “win-win-win” for all involved, including the taxpayers. “This is a great example of teamwork with community partners,” said Herzberg, a member of the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee. Chickahominy District Supervisor Angela KellyWiecek said her son played roller hockey and she had

spent many a chilly night out at the Barton Rink. She commended the Bartons for turning their tragic loss into a gift for others. “It makes my heart very full,” she said. “We are just so thrilled,” said Carol Barton. “We are thankful for all of the support, from the community and from the board and Doswell Energy and the Capitals. So many people said, ‘tell us what we can do to help’. We are very lucky to have had such support from everyone.” Fundraising during COVID-19 times was challenging, so the Bartons set up a GoFundMe page.

Peter Robinson, director of Youth Development for the Washington Capitals, said the Barton project was “more personal” than other facilities the Capitals have helped repair and refurbish. “We haven’t done any other projects like this,” Robinson said. “Most of our other projects have been municipal-driven to refurbish facilities that needed an update. Hawk girls, boys win regional tennis titles County players advance in regional singles, doubles By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – With a pair of dominating sweeps, the Hanover High School girls and boys tennis teams successfully defended their titles as reigning Region 4B team champions last week. Even better for county tennis fans, players from all four county schools advanced in their respective regional singles and doubles tournaments. The Hanover girls team kicked off a week of victories with a straight-set sweep of visiting Eastern View in the Region 4B girls team championship Monday. They dropped a mere three games the entire match. Hanover’s boys had a bit more trouble in a contest delayed a day because of weather, but still swept the Cyclones on Eastern View’s home court. For Hanover’s girls, it was their fourth-straight regional titles – keeping in mind there was no season last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic interruption, however, meant that many of the Hawk girls had never experienced the pressure of a regional tournament. “They were very happy.

Brizendine, Joyce pitch gems in DH nightcap By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – When Patrick Henry visited Atlee for a baseball doubleheader Tuesday, the two games proved a study in contrasts. Both were close, but one had plenty offensive action. The other was a pitcher’s gem. By the time it was over, both the Patriots and Raiders could claim a win, with Atlee earning a wild 8-7 win in the opener and Patrick Henry a 1-0 win in the nightcap – despite a no-hitter by Atlee pitcher Mike Joyce. The most important thing about the evening for both coaches was that their teams were competitive. “The last time we played [Atlee] at our place we didn’t play well at all,” said Patrick Henry head coach Sam Hart. “We inched closer tonight (in the opener) and fought the entire game. Even though we had some miscues we fought through it. Basically they won it in the bottom half. At least we competed. In the second game we continued to compete.” The Patriots led early in the opener before Atlee roared back with the help of a four-run fourth. “We competed the first game. We definitely showed life at the end coming back – showed a little bit of heart, a little bit of character,” said Atlee head coach John Corbin. “The second game was well played. We hit it right at people and they capitalized on our one miscue.” The Atlee miscue came in the second inning. Patrick Henry’s Lee Smallwood reached first on an error and legged it out to third base. One out later, Jack Kaczmarek knocked him in on a groundout to shortstop. The gems of the evening were the pitching performances

by Brizendine and Joyce. Joyce got the no-hitter, but Brizendine threw a one-hitter and got the win. “What a performance by

Fitzpatrick,” Hart said. “He’s thrown a lot and he leads us in appearances. We’ve kept him on a really short leash because of the way we had gotten such a

late start. But he threw extremely well – and we’ll take it.” Joyce performed well for Atlee at the plate as well as on the mound, but his best swing

to help his own cause went deep – and straight to a Patrick Henry outfielder. “The second game, early on, we squared some balls up but

right at people. That’s the way the game works,” Corbin said. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

glad that we were able to have one this year.” Weis – the reigning Class 4 state singles champion – Jordan Wood, Danielle Woolard, Juliann Webster and Kate Tunstall won their region title matches. Jamison Poythress was leading in her match when the Hawks clinched the title. On the boys side, several Hawks had dropped a set to their respective Eastern View opponents, but the losses had little effect on the Hanover steamroller. Ethan Belote, Carson Brooks, Vance Woolard, Noah Cole and Zachariah Christiansen won their matches, while Charles Adams was leading when the title was decided. The Hawk boys got off to a slow start, but a strong finish. “Some of the guys cut it

a little close in the first set,” said Hanover boys head coach Robert Blankenship. “But they got their wind under their wings the second set and were coming back with a vengeance.” Hanover’s entrants in the Region 4B singles and doubles tournaments drew a bye last

week. Most of the county’s competitors in the Region 4B or Region 5B singles and doubles tournaments Wednesday – boys at Mechanicsville and girls at Hanover – earned their places in their respective semifinals. One of the bigger surprises was for the Patrick Henry

girls doubles team. Patriot No. 2 Liz Hammond found herself with a new partner, Katherine Stockwell, when Patrick Henry’s No. 1, Emma Goldman, withdrew from her singles’ match earlier in the day because of heat exhaustion. “We have never played

doubles together before,” Hammond said. “It was a little bit of an unexpected turn of events. The biggest thing was cheering each other on and giving each other advice when we noticed stuff.” It took Hammond and Stockwell awhile to work out the bugs in their teamwork – their match was the longest of the doubles contests – but they defeated Caroline’s Lydia Tillapaugh and Hannah Pettigrew 6-2, 6-4. Good teamwork likewise played a role in Mechanicsville’s doubles pair of Brianna Velasco and Megan Davis advancing with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Orange County’s Matilyn Carter and Katelyn Clement. Strong motivation played a role, too. “This is my last regional before I go off to college. I want to just push my hardest and do better than I’ve done before,” said Velasco, who also advanced in singles. “That really put me

in a good mindset.” Velasco said good communication helped the pair win. “We kind of start talking and make sure we go through everything that we’re gong to do,” she said. “We warm up together and kind of make sure we’re both relaxed and calm each other down before we play.” Davis said it also helps to keep it light. “I try to have fun with it,” she said. “It’s so much easier when you’re not stressed.” In the first round of the Region 4B boys singles and doubles tournament, Mechanicsville’s Preston Edwards and Patrick Henry’s Lance Finnegan advanced to the semifinal round. In the doubles, Edwards and Matthew Lavinder advanced for the Mustangs as did Finnegan and Holt Oley for the Patriots. In Region 5B boys, Atlee’s Eric Ludwig advanced to the semifinal round in singles.

require those who are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to wear a mask while on a Virginia Community College campus. This is in accordance with the most recent guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Office of Governor Ralph Northam, and the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM). Of course, if you are fully vaccinated and you are still uncomfortable around others, please continue to wear your face covering knowing that you have our support to do so.”

Seat belts are essential for driver and passenger safety Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com RICHMOND – While many Virginians are getting vaccinated and making spring and summer travel plans, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), through its “Click It or Ticket!” campaign, reminds those who will be traveling that the best way to ensure you and your loved ones arrive at your destination safely is to always wear a

seat belt. While statistics show the lifesaving value of seat belts, approximately 15% of Virginians still do not buckle up. Held nationally in May, the “Click It or Ticket!” campaign combines outreach, education and enforcement to promote proper seat belt and child safety seat use. Despite fewer cars on the road, Virginia continues to see an increase in unbelted fatalities on the Commonwealth’s

Metro Creative Connection

roadways. Approximately 13% more people who weren’t wearing their seat belts have been killed in crashes in 2020, compared to 2019 (343 compared to 304).

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belts save more than 11,000 lives in the United States each year. I n 2017 alone, the NHTSA reported that seat belt use in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 14,955 lives. This year’s “Click It or Ticket!” campaign in Virginia focuses on being remembered for the positives in life and not that you weren’t wearing

a seat belt. “Not only is wearing a seat belt the law, but it is also a simple act of kindness for yourself and those who love you,” said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb, the Governor’s Highway Safety Representative. “We want all Virginians to be protected on the Commonwealth’s roadways and, time and time again, buckling up has been proven to reduce injuries and save lives if a crash occurs.”

His genuine personal investment and enthusiasm was apparent throughout the entire process and we cannot recommend him highly enough!

Local knowledge Process expertise Responsiveness Negotiation Skills We couldn’t have asked for a more responsive, knowledgeable, and understanding realtor. First he was amazing in the selling process of our first home. He was able to educate us and teach us the ropes of selling and purchasing. This was followed up 6 months later with our new home. Erik and his team gave us the opportunity to get the home of our dreams, well before we expected it to happen. I would recommend him to anyone buying a home in the Richmond and surrounding areas.

Stunning house on a HUGE lot in Giles! Don’t miss this opportunity to move into Giles before the summer and enjoy the new Magnolia Club without having to wait for a new construction build. With 5 bedrooms plus a large loft, and 3 full bathrooms, this house has lots of space and upgrades galore! Want a private pool? No problem, this is one of the only lots in Giles that will accommodate your own private pool. Come see for yourself!
