That race was Ford’s first 24-hour endurance win with co-drivers Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby who
led nearly every lap of the 24-hour race and outpaced the competition by 30 miles. The win was the first time anyone had threatened Ferrari’s dominance in sports car racing and represented a turning point in the Ford GT race program. The collection also includes a 2005 Ford GT and a 2008 Ferrari. “I am so excited to share this collection with the community. An error to a writer is like a gut punch By Melody Kinser Managing Editor s soon as I saw the direct message on The Local’s Facebook page, I felt like I had been kicked in the gut. I know all too well how important it is to get a name right -- whether in conversation or in print. I’ve been called Melanie most of my life and it’s a detailed routine of how I spell my last name for someone to submit an email. At least it got an English spelling when my ancestors arrived at Ellis Island. .. The German version of Kinser is Kuenzer. To get to the point, the name of the salutatorian for Mechanicsville High School was

misspelled under her photo on the front page of last week’s edition. I became ill when I saw her message. While I would hope all members of the Richmond Suburban News staff adhere to a goal of no errors, unfortunately, sometimes a mistake slips by and we beat ourselves up for it. Lauren Schenack was a class act in explaining her disappointment in the misspelling. We inadvertently had Scheneck. It was a big “Oh no!” moment that we sincerely regret. Changes were immediately made on our website, as well as the full edition on Issuu. Dealing with a misspelled or incorrect name has taunted me since I was a kid. I always said I
could deal with Melanie if I was being invited to a birthday party or some kind of celebration. In junior high, friends started calling me Mel, and when I visit my hometown more people are likely to refer to me as that than Melody. Of course, I can’t help but think back to the days when one of my parents would yell “Melody Shawn,” code for “You’re in trouble”. If it was “Melody Shawn Kinser”, then it was really serious. What’s in a name? Everything when it’s wrong. Diligence is a key component in our dayto-day operations. In closing, we certainly expect you to hold us to the highest standards possible. That is our goal.

I suppose to some it would seem an odd accessory to display, but to those who knew him, nothing could better capture the nature of a man Jim Ridolphi/The Local Accordion captured the essence of the than that old well-worn Hohner accordion. tinction of being instantly remembered by a single object. My uncle obtained the instrument while serving in the Army during and after World War II, and dragged it home with a collection of German beer steins and other acquisitions from his extended tour of the country. He left behind a community of friends, relationships and memories of what he once told me were some of the best years of his life.
But to the benefit of all that encountered him, Uncle Dudley did return to Gaithersburg, Maryland, and his dream of returning to Germany remained unfulfilled until late in his life. But, the memories of his stay remained strong throughout his life. We knew none of this as we gathered around him as children and begged him to play the accordion. On some occasions, he’d tease for see ACCORDION, pg. 7

Reader wants to correct falsehoods in recent letter Responsible citizens have a need more than ever to fight falsehoods and propaganda wherever they show up, including letters to the editor in The Mechanicsville Local. With this in mind, I would like to correct certain falsehoods in a recent letter. “New report shows widespread non-citizen voting in Virginia”. That was an opinion column by someone referencing a “report” by a right-wing legal organization. It was not a news story that went through a vetting process for accuracy (Richmond.com). “Thousands of non-citizens are registered to vote ...” The alleged report actually said they tried to register and had their registration revoked by the state. “... and have voted in our elections.” No again, because Trump’s own election fraud commission couldn’t find a shred of evidence in the entire nation and quickly disbanded in disgrace. “Per the Constitution, it is each state’s responsibility to ensure election integrity.” The Constitution actually says, “the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations”. This clause prevents rogue state legislators from squashing voters for political purposes, like we are seeing now. “Trump did more for America in four years than we will ever see again.” Three polls of presidential historians have ranked Trump as one of the five worst presidents in American history (C-SPAN, American Political Science Association). “Widespread voter fraud will continue.” And yet even Republican ballot counters and Republican election officials all across the country certified the election results. see LETTERS, pg. 7

hours as we waited eagerly and suffered a severe sense of disappointment when he would wander close to the instrument, but not pick it up. And, when it seemed all hope was lost and the longawaited concert would not occur, he’d scoop up the finelytuned squeeze box and belt out a series of tunes, all recognizable. In retrospect, I suspect his
actual musical ability on the accordion was limited. It’s not an easy instrument to play, and, to my knowledge, he had no formal training. His routine was always the same. He closed his eyes and searched through a few chords for a starting point, and then joined in with a melody tapped out on tiny keys on the opposite end of the bellows. His foot tapped like a bass drum as he performed his melodies, and the most patriotic of tunes required an
accompanying march around my grandmother’s large dining room table. And, yes, he took requests and somehow, could always devise something that sounded familiar to your request. Although he always seemed hesitant to perform and, at some times, the expressions on his face were almost painful as he played a song, Uncle Dudley played that accordion for hundreds of children throughout the years. I’m not sure what motivated him, but I thought
in later life the accordion was his personal reminder of a life that might have been, far away in a different country. Dudley maintained relationships with many of his old German friends, and, as a child, I remember him speaking of Fritz and other German friends. Many visited over the decades, and some even moved to America and maintained close relationships with my uncle throughout his life. I hope that old accordion maintains its well-deserved
place of dignity in years to come. Perhaps, few will remember the story of Uncle Dudley and his accordion, but for the dozens of a generation who grew up with the man and that musical instrument, it will remind us of his kindness, compassion and ability to make special memories that last a lifetime. “A 2020 Gallup Poll reported 59% lack confidence in our elections.” Absolutely not. The 59% reference is among people who are “very” or “somewhat” confident (Gallup. com). The drop is only among Republicans who voted for Trump and listened to his completely unproven claims about election integrity. We will continue to suffer as a country as long as a wide number of people rely on entertainers pretending to be journalists (Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson) and on fake Facebook pages for their “news”. Scott Bateman Mechanicsville
Assertions in letter need investigation In the June 30 issue, Patricia Lassiter made several interesting assertions that bear investigation. She began by describing Biden voters as “well-informed, educated, knowledgeable people”, which is the conservative definition of elitists. It’s a common image put forward by conservatives to help divide and create a contrast with their self-image of common sense,
patriotic, moral citizens. She goes on to cite a June 2017 Richmond TimesDispatch article that purports to show wide spread non-citizen voting and notes Heritage Foundation research that supports the claim. The article reports that, since 2011 in Virginia, 5,556 non-citizens registered to vote through the registration process associated with obtaining a driver’s license. When the article was written, that was about 900 per year. The article also said the non-citizen registrants were discovered because they selfidentified and had their status changed. If these non-citizens were part of an organized voter fraud scheme to disrupt U.S. elections, why would they selfidentify and have their status changed to non-registered? And, there was no mention that any of the registrants ever voted. All that’s claimed is they registered, likely in error because they didn’t understand the process The article was based on data from the Heritage Foundation site subsequently mentioned. On the site’s initial page — where it’s expected the Foundation’s more egregious, damning examples of widespread fraud would be cited, it’s asserted that, since 1988
1,852 citizens voted illegally 7,474 times. In other words, over a 30-year period the Heritage Foundation uncovered approximately 250 fraudulent votes per year. The site goes on to note that they have documented 1,285 cases of fraud the past four years. It’s not clear whether they are included in the previously mentioned 1,852 citizens who voted illegally, but to give the Heritage Foundation the benefit of the doubt, let’s assume the 1,285 cases are new. The site then describes “common types of fraud” with specific examples. For instance, two people voted by absentee ballot in one state while voting in person in another. Another was a city council member forced to resign because he illegally registered at his parents’ address instead of his own. Yet another person — presumably working in a registrar’s office — changed party affiliation of voters forged signatures on voter registration forms. No total number of such violations was included. None of the examples indicated party affiliation so no way to determine if it was Democrats or Republicans. While such examples may be “widespread” such as happening in all the states, they hardly signal a profoundly dangerous problem for the country.
Do the above statistics justify the clamor and coordinated legislation in Republicancontrolled states to stamp out a dangerous problem endangering the country’s electoral integrity? As for the assertion that Donald Trump “did more for America in four years that we will see again in history”, that’s a remarkable assertion when measured against accomplishments of Jefferson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, to cite a few. One accomplishment most cited by Trump and his supporters is the most booming economy of all time. That “boom” was fueled by three methods usually employed to shore up a badly cratering economy. First, a massive tax cut, the lion’s share of which went to corporations and upper income citizens, and then pressuring the Fed to lower interest rates virtually to zero and lastly deficit spending. Prior to the pandemic, Congress had authorized and Trump signed a budget for the year with a $1 trillion deficit. There was indeed a bump in economic growth above 3% but analyses by the Wall Street Journal and other groups showed that, after the initial rise, the economy was trending down and would likely settle back to the level it was when Trump took office.
On top of that, analyses

clearly showed the tax cut didn’t pay for itself and never would. In addition, specific Trump tariff policies led to spikes in appliance prices and the need for billions of dollars of subsidies to farmers whose foreign markets evaporated. The description of President Joe Biden is a “physically and cognitively impaired puppet … who is an embarrassment on the world stage” is patently false. Biden more than held his own when debating Trump, and has had productive meetings with members of Congress with no reports of
a feeble, disabled president. Biden is a puppet of whom? What insidious cabal is controlling him? An embarrassment on the world stage? Biden’s recent spate of meetings with European leaders and a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin reflected a very capable, highly respected president. Trump’s primary allies were Putin, former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, whose latest accomplishment is fostering more than 500,000 COVID-19 deaths in a population of 215 million, a higher per capita death rate than the U.S. As for embarrassing, what’s
more embarrassing than a president rejecting the work and analyses of his own intelligence and military analysists in favor of the word of a Russian dictator? His obsequious behavior to Putin is further documented in his efforts to eliminate or destroy any record of his meeting with Putin. Translators’ notes were destroyed, aides and others often weren’t permitted to enter the room, and Trump said what he talked about with Putin was “none of your business”. I look forward to many more documented examples of voter fraud, which I’m sure will emerge from the defamation and libel trials of Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and Fox News. Bill Iles Mechanicsville

ing was submitted as a rebuttal to a recent letter from Patricia Lassiter.) My gawd, you got “donned” big-time! You need many . . . many(!) things: beginning with a chill pill! Your “Gallop estimate of 59%” . . . that source could be very, very interesting. Maybe ONA? Maybe Alex (Widda) Jones’ InfoWars? Maybe Fox News (false noice, Tucker Carlson, Sean “Insanity” Hannity)? One thing for sure is that (after the Pony Express took up to 30 days to get news through to the readers) today we “want-what-we-want-andwant-it-yesterday,” you do not want truth (in the news) . . . you want the news to tell you what you want to hear. You need to know that the “lack of confidence in our elections” and the “widespread voter fraud” are all products of the greatest con artist who ever drew a breath in human history! You’ve been “donned.” Just one generation ago, we didn’t throw hate spears at each other. Just one generation ago, we didn’t label each other “conservative” and “liberal” as epithets. Just one generation ago, we accepted the results of our elections. Just one generation ago, we were “the United States of America” and not the divided hate-riddled collection of tribal idiots (we’ve all) become. Yes, we’ve got big, big problems. These problems did not begin when George Bush or Bill Clinton or Barack Obama or Ronald Reagan were in the Oval Office. These problems (the subject of your entire hate-filled rant in the June 30 edition of The Mechanicsville Local letters) began a few hundred years earlier (I draw a direct reference to your “hatewhite-people-classes”). Your comments border on propaganda to join race-hate organi-
zations (which seem to be rapidly growing [“out-of-fear?”]). Be honest with yourself: Donald Trump’s the “Great White Hope,” ain’t he? I spent 24 years in military uniform, guarding the Constitution so folks like you can have “freedom of speech” (as shameful as it gets sometimes in the public forum). Face it: You got “donned.” He’s not only the “greatest con artist who ever drew a breath in human history” . . . he’s also the best I’ve ever seen at stirring up the proverbial bucket of ($£¥#%*!) then watching “others fight” . . . like at the insurrection (with glee, then told Kevin McCarthy “maybe they care more about our country than you,” then said “Mike Pence may or may not do the right thing [throw the election]”). He’s best at seeking out folks who hate each other and then stonewalling the existing problems until they boil over (as in the same terrorist attack on “our” Capitol on Jan. 6). Then there’s your sarcasm with the “well-informed educated people who voted for Joe Biden” (remember the Trump quote, “I love uneducated people”). Let me tell you, as much as I dislike Hillary Clinton, she was much more than just “the first woman on a major national ticket” . . . she was the most experienced candidate for President of the United States since Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower (the last decent/ powerful/respected POTUS) while Trump was the all-time worst. Joe Biden is even more experienced than she was! As for your comment “p h y s i c a l l y / c o g n i t i v e l y impaired puppet”, are you blind? Are you certified to give such diagnostic comments? As for “impaired” . . . go Google “FTD” (frontotemporal dementia), then watch YouTube (it’ll take all day) to witness all the extensive
symptoms Trump showed the world; (trouble [with excuses] walking down a ramp at the United States Military Academy [where he recalled all to for his rambling commencement speech], crooked stance(s), slurred speech (“unnnitedStaace”), chronic rambling in day-to-day conversations, socially inappropriate jesters/behavior, etc. Then “puppet?” Remember (I guess you can remember things you don’t want to) the numerous TrumPutin meetings: behind closed doors, with a different Russian interpreter each time (not once with an English interpreter; then what happened to these Russian interpreters?). Who’s the “puppet?” I’m one of those voters who voted for the best candidate. My first time voting in the national election was Richard Nixon. As a youngin’ in my first election, I read as much as I could to learn about the candidates (in 1972!). Just so happens, I voted Republican for each administration (especially Reagan!) from Nixon all the way to George W. Bush’s first term (then I found out about Dick Cheney and his dedication to the same military/industrial complex Ike warned us all about in 1960). Google “Ike’s farewell address.” My entire point here is that you’re obviously attached at the hip with “Trumpism.” Your last (part of your letter) comments about “the end” and “dismantling” and “cut off, cut out, cut up” is going on as I write my rebuttal. The end is indeed, here already! Thanks (you got “donned”!). It all began on Jan. 6 at the site of the “pillars of democracy for the entire planet.” It began in 2011 with the “birther BS” (you got “donned” again then too; didn’t ya?). It began when idiots bought/sold “I’d rather see LETTERS, pg. 18

Your obvious love of Trumpism will indeed cause that “Civil War 2.0” t’all Trumpers want sooooo badly. Only thing is: One side will not put the other side back together again like it did 156 years ago. China, Russia (because Putin also is a coward and will follow China into the war-torn U.S. as Trump would: behind someone unlike him who has strength), Iran, ISIS, Syria and Kim Jung “Un-human” will all; all of our (global) enemies will swoop in and clean-it-all-up! Then you can explain to your grandchildren who caused it all (by y’all getting “donned” over and over and over, again and again and again). Richard Ryder Mechanicsville

been difficult all around the world and most keenly, here in the USA. People have taken sides in a culture war that has divided our nation to an extent not seen since the Civil War era. The divisiveness has torn apart families, marriages, friendships, communities, churches. During this time span, I have attended to political news more closely than ever in my nearly six decades here on planet Earth. I have friends, family and neighbors on both sides of this war and I have challenged myself to maintain my relationships regardless of differences of opinion. This has not been easy. The culture war in which we have been tossed is not organic, it is man-made. The division is intentional -- it has been done to us for the benefit of political advantage. We are all entitled to our own opinions. “Opinion” however, is not “fact” or “truth”. Wanting something to be “true” doesn’t make it so. There was a time in our country, right up to the Reagan era, when opinions given through media sources were required to give equal time to the opposing viewpoint. This was the “Fairness Doctrine” and it arose after World War II as a means to mitigate the effect of propaganda. We need to reinstate it. With the advent of the internet, information is everywhere. in this era is exposed to as much information in a week as people in the 19th century accessed in their entire lives. Think about this for a moment. At this rate, individuals are exposed to the amount of information that would have been available for 52 lifespans in one year; 520 lifetimes in 10 years. Is it any wonder we are weary? The difference between “media” and “news” is similar to the difference between “opinion” and “fact”. We have a right to free speech, to share and embrace our own opinions. Forgive my redundancy: Wanting something to be true doesn’t make it so. Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. Regardless of the media that claims the election was “stolen”, numerous audits have been conducted in all the places that Trump believed he should have won, by Republican State Legislatures, all arriving at the same conclusion: Joe Biden won. Over the course of the four long years Trump held the position of president, the nation saw that he never admitted to any error, big or small. We also saw that he demanded loyalty from others but did not reciprocate loyalty to anyone who contradicted him in even the smallest matter. These facts are ignored by those who continue to embrace Trump. Ignoring facts does not make them opinion any more than wishing opinions are

Resident urges voting for Glenn Youngkin I’m a black female Christian conservative, and I’ve got my eyes on the Virginia gubernatorial race! I voted for Democrats from 1978 through 2013. Starting to vote differently was a slow process for me, but I didn’t stand firmly in my conservative beliefs until I read, “Please Stop Helping Us” by Jason Riley. Excellent book about how Democrat policies have failed the Black community for many years. What I have found in my studies is that Black people basically need the same thing as any other group to succeed: strong faith, strong families, a good education and good jobs. Glenn Youngkin has earned my vote as he is a family man who has worked his way up the corporate ladder. Glenn is a former athlete who went to college on a basketball scholarship, and he is strong on unity and hard work. He will build an effective team that will win for Virginia! If you want a good education for Virginia’s children, lots of jobs and low crime, vote Glenn Youngkin! Tywana Hampton Mechanicsville

Motorcycle passenger killed in two-vehicle crash in Glen Allen Staff Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER – A 25-yearold Glen Allen woman died Friday night of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in the 11900 block of North Lakeridge Parkway in Ashland. Lt. James R. Cooper of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office identified the victim as Amanda Paige Ball. She was the passenger on the motorcycle. The driver was taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the 2010 Dodge sedan was uninjured. Cooper said deputies responded around 11:06 p.m. on June 9 to a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1997 Yamaha motorcycle, with two riders, was traveling westbound on North Lakeridge Parkway when it collided with a 2010 Dodge sedan turning eastbound onto North Lakeridge Parkway out of a business parking lot,” the lieutenant, who serves as the HCOS public information officer, said. According to Cooper, Ball was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators are still collecting information at this time. “We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family of Amanda Ball during this difficult time,” Cooper said, speaking on behalf of Col. David R. Hines, sheriff.

Reading and Discussing Stories -- The Basics is a program that helps young children prepare to thrive.
Richmond region embraces The Basics Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com
RICHMOND – Early childhood champions throughout the Richmond region are getting back to The Basics … literally! A wide variety of nonprofit organizations, social services and government agencies, school systems and healthcare entities are rallying around The Basics, which are five simple and powerful things that parents, caregivers and child care providers can do to help young children thrive in the early years. The Basics provide the framework and easyto-use tools for interacting with little learners in fun and meaningful ways. These five evidence-based parenting and care-giving principles can benefit children from all backgrounds and across the spectrum of socio-economic factors: z Maximize Love, Manage Stress z Talk, Sing, and Point z Count, Group, and Compare
z Explore through Movement and Play z Read and Discuss Stories Founded in Boston by Ron Ferguson, Ph.D., The Basics Inc. grew out of the Achievement Gap Initiative at Harvard University in partnership with the Black Philanthropy Fund. Amy Bartilotti, coordinator of the Office of Family & Community Engagement at Chesterfield County Public Schools, heard Dr. Ferguson speak at a conference in 2017 and immediately knew she wanted to bring The Basics to RVA. “The Basics give parents and caregivers the tools to encourage brain development long before a child starts formal schooling in kindergarten,” said Bartilotti. “The five principles are so simple and yet they’re a huge game-changer, leveraging everyday learning opportunities to nurture a child’s natural curiosity about their world and give them confidence to keep exploring.”

Vaccination center closes; volunteers honored by county ASHLAND -- Hanover County celebrated the success of the COVID-19 vaccination clinic in the Ashland Junction Shopping Center with a lunch for the hundreds of volunteers who made it possible. More than 51,000 vaccinations were administered at the center between Jan. 29 and the final day, which was Friday, June 25. Dr. Thomas Franck, director of the Chickahominy Health District, said that number ranked 15th out of 4,000 organizations in the state. On March 26, 1,141 people received a vaccination at the clinic, he said.
“It’s not the largest clinic in Virginia, but I have never seen a more efficient clinic than this one right here,” Franck said. “This is the gold standard in COVID vaccination.” Hanover County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sean Davis, County Administrator John A. Budesky and Deputy County Administrator Jim Taylor joined Franck in expressing their appreciation to the volunteers, who were fed hot dogs and hamburgers cooked by members of the Ashland Kiwanis Club. “You have done what we needed to do for our residents in their time of need,” Budesky
told the crowd of volunteers. “I’ve been so humbled by the work of so many to make a difference in our community.” “Our goal was to provide the opportunity for every Hanover County citizen who wanted a vaccination to get a vaccination,” Davis said. “I

Twenty-seven students representing the four high schools – Atlee, Hanover, Mechanicsville, and Patrick Henry -- in Hanover County Public Schools recently graduated from the Youth Citizens Police Academy. This is the largest number of students to ever participate in and graduate from the HCSO Youth Citizens Police Academy. Beginning on June 21, students received an inside look into the day-to-day operations of the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. They also were able to interact with numerous sworn members of the Sheriff’s Office. They received instruction in a variety of topics, including emergency vehicle operations, traffic stops, defensive tactics and building searches. “It truly was an excellent week spent with an excellent group of young people. “It is our hope that these young people developed a better understanding of how and why the members of the Sheriff’s Office do what they do,” Col. David R. Hines, sheriff, said.

Ashland spreads red, white and blue in resuming 4th celebration Staff Report news@mechlocal.com ASHLAND – Celebrating the red, white and blue dominated activities in the Town of Ashland with attire and costumes spreading the joy of the Fourth of July. A high point every year is the parade, which features the unique and entertaining along the route. Due to last year’s COVID-19 pandemic, the town had to forego one of its favorite ways to spotlight our country’s independence. This year, however, brought out plenty of participants and spectators. The parade was followed by festivities on the lawn of the Hanover Arts & Activities Center at 500 S. Center St. in Ashland. Among the events enjoyed by the crowd were: An apple pie baking contest. The Lawn celebration with food, beverage, lawn games, and patriotic music. Patriotic Pet Contest on the lawn. Winning pies being auctioned to highest bidders.

Some of the changes do not take effect until 2022, 2023, or 2024. Some of the legislation must be re-enacted by future sessions of the legislature. I will briefly touch upon the laws taking effect on July 1, 2021, of the most interest to the greatest number of citizens. There are no longer criminal penalties for simple possession of up to one ounce of marijuana by person 21 years of age or older. There are numerous civil penalties associated with marijuana but this article will not address those matters. Unlawful possession of more than one pound is a felony punishable by a prison term of not less than one year nor more than 10 years

and a fine of not more than $250,000, or both. Any person 21 years of age or older may cultivate up to four marijuana plants for personal use at their main place of residence. Regardless of the number of individuals residing at the main residence, no household shall contain more than four plants. The plants must be cultivated at the main residence, renting additional land or buildings will not let a household cultivate more than four plants. Any person cultivating marijuana for personal use shall ensure that no plant is visible from a public way without the use of aircraft or optical aids, take precaution to prevent unauthorized access by persons less than 21 years of age, and attach to each plant a legible tag that includes the person’s name, driver’s license or identification number and a notation that the plant is being grown for personal use. Penalties for cultivating more than four plants range from a
civil penalty to one to 10 years and/or a fine of up to $250,000 depending on the number of plants in possession. Further, no civil or criminal penalty may be imposed for “adult sharing” of an amount of marijuana not exceeding one ounce or the equivalent amount of marijuana products. “Adult sharing” means transferring marijuana between those 21 years older without remuneration. No person shall consume marijuana or marijuana product or offer the same to another, at or in any pubic place. A first offense is a civil penalty of $25, a second offense is a civil penalty of $25 and completion of a substance abuse program, and a third violation is a class 4 misdemeanor (up to $250 fine). A “public place” is any place, building or conveyance to which the public has, or is permitted to have, access, including restaurants, soda fountains, hotel dining areas, lobbies and corridors of hotels,
and any park, place of public resort or amusement, highway, street, lane, or sidewalk adjoining any highway, street, or lane. Starting July 1, 2021, defense evidence of the accused’s mental condition at the time of the alleged offense, including expert testimony, will be admissible to show the defendant did not have the intent required for the offense charged. Evidence may be introduced of a mental illness, a developmental or intellectual disability or an autism spectrum disorder. No provision is made for the Commonwealth to have its own expert witness to examine the defendant. Prior to July 1, 2021, all convictions for robbery carried a range of punishment from 5 years in the penitentiary to a life sentence. Effective July 1, 2021, robbery was reclassified into 4 categories. The commission of robbery with a serious bodily injury or death carries a penalty of a class 2 felony (20 years to life). Robbery by using
or displaying a firearm in a threatening manner is a class 3 felony (5 years to 20 years). A robbery by using physical force not resulting in serious bodily injury or by using or displaying a deadly weapon other than a firearm in a threatening manner is a class 5 felony (up to 10 years in a penitentiary or up to 12 months in a jail and up to a $2,500 fine, either or both). Lastly, a robbery committed by using threats or intimidation or any other means not involving a deadly weapon is a class 6 felony (up to 5 years in the penitentiary or 12 months in jail and up to a $2,500 fine, either or both). Anyone convicted of a crime and part of their sentence was suspended will be subject to new sanctions should that person violate a technical condition or provision of the suspended sentence. For a first violation, the court can no longer impose a period of incarceration from the previously suspended time. For
a second technical violation, there is a presumption against imposing a period of incarceration unless the judge finds the offender committed the second technical violation and cannot be diverted from incarceration through less restrictive means, then the court may impose no more than 14 days of incarceration. A third violation may result in up to the full amount of the suspended sentence being revoked. Prior to this statutory change, the judge could revoke any or all of the suspended sentence upon a first technical violation. As always, I caution the reader that this article is not a complete review of all legislation and only highlights certain portions of the new legislation noted herein. Should a reader have any questions, feel free to contact me at 804365-6186. As always, my thanks to the citizens of Hanover County for the honor of serving as their Commonwealth’s Attorney.

DMV: ‘look before you lock’; vehicular heatstroke dangers rise RICHMOND – In 2020, 24 children in the United States died as a result of being left in an unattended hot vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). As temperatures begin to climb, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) urges parents and caregivers to never leave children unattended in a vehicle – even for a minute – no matter the temperature. When the outside temperature is 80 degrees, a car can heat up to 100 degrees in just 10 minutes. Parking in the shade and rolling down the car’s windows have little effect on inside temperature, and as time goes by the temperature rises. Children have died from heatstroke in cars when outside

temperatures can cause irreparable organ damage in pets and even death. A good rule of thumb is to always “look before you lock,” NHTSA says. Drivers are encouraged to check the back seats of their vehicle before locking it and walking away. A helpful reminder may be to keep a stuffed animal or pet’s toy in the back seat when it’s empty, and move it to the front seat as a visual reminder when a child or pet is in the back seat. Additionally, caregivers should be mindful of the dangers of heat when traveling with the elderly. As people age, it becomes more difficult to regulate temperature and the ability to sweat decreases, making the elderly more at risk of heatstroke than younger adults, according to the National Institutes of Health.
temperatures were as low as 60 degrees. “As the weather is warming up in the Commonwealth and we are traveling more frequently, we need to establish habits that will help keep our children and pets safe when we get out of our vehicles,” said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb, the Governor’s Highway Safety Representative. “All hot car deaths are preventable and we - as parents, caregivers, and bystanders -have a responsibility to keep those more vulnerable to heatstroke safe.” Both children and pets are especially prone to being harmed by heatstroke. Children heat up three to five times faster than adults, according to kidsandcars.org. Pets cannot sweat like humans; they can only cool down through panting, according to the Humane Society of the United States. High

Improvements give good vibes in GRAL By Rob Witham and Dave Lawrence Mechanicsville Local
GLEN ALLEN – One of the best things about Greater Richmond Aquatic League (GRAL) swimming is that everyone can win. That’s how Milestone head coach Alli Moore can be so excited about her team’s performance Wednesday night at The Federal Club, though the host Eagles defeated the Makos in total points 1,162 to 711. “I already knew we were going to lose just because we’re a smaller team,” Moore said. “We were also missing a lot of kids. But during the meet, I was extremely happy. I want to say 95 percent of our kids dropped times in all three of their events.” With the season-ending Champs event on the horizon July 26, swimmers looked to either improve their position or make the qualifying time for the postseason. The Eagles soared thanks in part to seven quadruple winners: Brannan Agee, Amanda Barnard, Taylor Olivia Brown, Charlotte Bruning, Capri Fatigante, Leah Sculthorpe and Ford Sprouse. Fatigante qualified for Champs by winning the girls 11-12 50-yard backstroke in 38.87, taking just over seven seconds off her seed time. Later, she knocked 5.5 seconds off her time in the 50 freestyle to win and qualify with a time of 32.82. Bruning, Brown and Agee

His time of 1:12.44 was 10 seconds better than his nearest competitor. Left, Milestone’s Molly Sabo takes three seconds off her personal best while seimming to victory in the super varsity division of the 8-under girls 50 yard freestyle. Her time of 35.12 was more than 11 seconds better than the runner up.
Then there are swimmers joined Sprouse to win the mixed 9-10 200 free relay going like Cati Callihan, who has away, winning by 25 seconds in already qualified in the top Champs division, senior var2:17.91.

Atlee Little League’s 8-10 Baseball All Star team is in familiar territory, pursuing a Virginia state championship in the 8-10 state tournament at Richlands Little League in Richlands. The team is just one of several from Hanover County pursing state and regional titles in Little League or Babe Ruth tournaments. The Atlee 8-10 All Stars won the District 5 tournament with a 7-4 win over Tuckahoe Little League on June 29. They began pool play in the state tournament Friday with a 12-0 win over Bedford Little League. Pitcher Caston Bulheller got the team off to a strong start, allowing just one hit and no runs in 3-1/3 innings. Reliever Landon Viar closed out the game with two strikeouts. For Eagles head coach Lindsey Hair – now in her fourth year of coaching for The Federal Club – satisfaction came not only from the night’s results, but also for the overall growth of the program. “We used to be a 60-swimmer type of club, and now we’re almost to 100,” Hair noted. “We have lots of new swimmers. It’s been a great time.” Milestone had five quadruple winners: Wyatt Jones, Emory Sproull, Emily Stevens, Michael Sabo and Molly Sabo. Molly anchored the 8-under 100 mixed freestyle relay team which won with an impressive time of 1:19.31, and returned moments later to set the No. 1 time in GRAL this season in the 8-under girls 50 free, taking three seconds off her personal best for a time of 35.12. She also owns the top time in the league in the 25 breaststroke, winning Wednesday in 21.44, nearly two seconds better than her previous best, and in the 25 free, which she swam in 15.97. Ainsley Agee of The Federal Club was second in the free with a time of 17.50, which is third best in GRAL this season. Perhaps the best race of the night was saved for last, when Sproull, Stevens and Jones partnered with Noah Brant in the mixed 15-18 200 free relay, nipping the Eagles’ quartet of Michael Bailey, Maggie McClintock, Ryan Matheny and Deklan Cauthorne in 1:46.78. The Federal Club finished in 1:47.53. Close competitions and improved times were a staple of the evening’s action. Elsewhere in the County, Pebble Creek edged Mechanicsville Recreation Association by a mere six points, 861-855. What gave Pebble Creek the edge? “I think our kids are really

passionate about the sport,” said Pebble Creek head coach Ryan Griffiths. “I think that they really strive to go as fast as they can at every meet, which is great. What made the difference in this case? Yeah, I think it’s just that passion. I think it’s that drive to be the best that they can every time they get up on the blocks.”
While winning is important, it isn’t everything. What is more important in the long run for all the coaches is to see their swimmers improve. “My full-time job is as an educator, so I really have that growth mindset,” said Mechanicsville Recreation Association head swim coach Danielle Sisson-Jones. “I have
always worked with populations of younger kids and middle schoolers, and in my normal everyday job they really struggle with certain things. … “Growth is one thing that I have always focused on both for my students and then also for my swimmers as well. If we can get better each and every time, then I consider that personally
a win.” Both teams had their share of multiple winners. Pebble Creek was led by quadruple winners Maddie Fogg, Mason Hill, Wesley Hill, Emily Magill, Avery Minton, Olivia Minton, Kenzie Strohhacker, Reagan Strohhacker, and Maxwell Uzukwu. It’s triple winners were Trey Davis III, Chandler
Haskins, Madison Haskins, Tyler Hill, Isabelle Lindsey, Jackson Magill and Lainey Walker. MRA was led by quad winners Logan Deal, Jordyn Dillard and Brittany Hanner. It’s triple winners were Tyler Earley, Olivia Leonard, Arabella Lewis, Jackson McMackin, Alexander Patrick, Alex Pruemer, Nicholas Reid, Peyton Seward, Connor Smith, Whitney Speeks, Emily Willard and Katie Willard. Elsewhere in the county, Goochland YMCA edged host Old Church 866-828. Goochland was led by quadruple winners Nathaniel Carter, Audrey Darden, Caroline Darden, Ryan Johnson and Andrea Rogers along with triple winners, Madison Bostic, Bailey Brown, Cora Chapman, Jude Chapman, Callie Horst, Skyler Mann, Anneliese Rogerson, Lane Ways and Mady Winall. Old Church was led by quad winners Joelle Agee, Henry Atkinson, Liam Brehm, Nathan Kelly, Liz Laprade and Ty Williams. The Otters’ triple winners were Owen Agee, Alex Brehm, Connor Brooks, Gracie Brooks, Levi Grubbs, Bryden Hurtubise, Julia Laprade, Avery Pierce, and Claire Randolph. Attention turns to this week’s regular season finales, as The Federal Club travels to Old Church for an in-person meet on Wednesday, while Milestone goes to Fox Hall for a “flexible” meet, which gives Makos swimmers an option to swim at home. Pebble Creek will host Dominion Club and Mechanicsville will host Wembly. Flexible and virtual meets have been a vital part of keeping the 2021 GRAL season going successfully, with one more chance for swimmers to make it to the league’s biggest stage.
