New partnership aims at comprehensive County monitoring rise in COVID cases internet access for Hanover County By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local
H
anover County Ad m i n i s t r at o r John Budesky announced last week a new public/private partnership designed to provide internet service to areas that are underserved or have no service at all. All Points Broadband was selected to identify those areas of Hanover that are underserved or lack internet service, and it will work with county officials, Dominion Energy Virginia and Rappahannock Electric Cooperative to develop and implement a plan to deliver broadband access with minimum upload/download speeds of 100 Mbps. “Our businesses and residents expressed a need and interest, and the Board of Supervisors and staff heard you,” Budesky said. “Today, we are

Hanover County Administrator John Budesky announced a new broadband initiative called Connect Hanover at a press conference held last week. The new plan partners the county with Dominion Energy of Virginia, Rappahannock Electric Cooperative and All Points Broadband to provide broadband service to underserved areas. here to announce a solution.” Last year, a broadband committee that was formed to search for solutions to the access problem recommended that the county seek private partnerships to fill gaps in coverage. They also suggest-
ed accessing state grants that could provide financial assistance for the project. Many Hanover residents currently must rely on satellite, DSL, cell phones or mobile hot spots to access the internet, but those services do not provide
adequate speed and data for comprehensive access. Budesky said the new partnership will enable those underserved residents to access full coverage by 2026. “We are committed to working with our private partners to get those residents access,” Budesky said. He said lack of internet access is the number one concern expressed by county residents, and last week’s announcement is the first step to a solution. Officials from All Points Broadband began evaluating and mapping county residences and their internet connectivity; they will continue that process through August. Citizens are urged to share input regarding internet service during the upcoming month to make sure all areas of unserved residences are cataloged. Supervisors will consider a
Delta variant propels increase By Jim Ridolphi for the Mechanicsville Local For the past several months, Assistant County Administrator Jim Taylor has provided COVID-19 updates at each board meeting, and officials hoped that this month’s report would be a wrap-up of the county’s efforts to combat the pandemic. “Our community, like many communities, is seeing a rise in cases, specifically with the Delta variant,” county Administrator John Budesky told supervisors at last week’s meeting. “We do need to be vigilant. We’re going to look at policies for our employees and families here and continue to monitor the situation.”

Hanover resident Chris French encouraged board members to require masks in schools at last week’s meeting. Assistant County Administrator Jim Taylor said school officials are still considering the latest guidelines before reaching a decision on a mask policy.

ECHANICSVILLE - The Hanover Cooperative Extension has started its first gleaning program to help reduce food insecurity across the county. Local farmers sometimes have surplus produce they need “gleaned,” or gathered after harvest, to clear their fields in preparation for their next crop. Rather than letting this produce become compost, the extension office is sending that surplus produce to local food pantries in need. In cooperation with farmers in the area,
master gardeners who have taken a food safety course go to the fields on coordinated dates, harvest the produce and transport it to food pantries that serve the Hanover community. During the first two weeks of the project, the Hanover Cooperative Extension worked with three farms that donated more than 700 pounds of produce, such as zucchini, squash, cabbage and corn, and almost 500 pints of fresh blackberries. The food – which totaled more than 4,000 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables - was delivered to eight area food pantries. If you have extra produce to share with those in need, contact the Hanover Extension Office at (804) 752-4310.

There is no need to drive long distances (or even across the James River) to have cataract surgery when the procedure and all follow-up visits can be done locally at this state-ofthe-art facility in Mechanicsville. Dr. Chandler has over 30 years of experience performing cataract surgery. He offers advanced technology lens implants that can correct distance, near and intermediate vision after cataract surgery and even correct astigmatism. Broadband access seems within reach By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

ompiling a list of negative impacts of the COVID pandemic would not be difficult, but identifying a silver lining associated with the year-plus experience is more challenging. As we enter what all of us hope is a return to some semblance of normalcy, it’s easy to overlook lessons learned during the pandemic as we rush back to our normal routines. And for most of us, that routine includes access to broadband and dependable internet service; but for underserved residents in many Virginia counties, the future promises solutions that long eluded local, state and federal officials. Senator Mark Warner recently said that thanks to the American Recovery Act, all Virginians will have access to broadband by 2024. That’s a bold promise, one that a few short months ago seemed almost impossible. Goochland became one of the first counties in the Commonwealth to announce a memorandum of understanding with three companies to provide service for an estimated 3,500 underserved users in the county. The county displayed a willingness to partner with the private sector to address a longstanding problem whose negative effects were highlighted during a pandemic when internet became essential for students, and parents. Providing that access to areas currently not served is a lofty goal, and one that has tradition-

ally suffered from a lack of resources that made it difficult to identify viable solutions. Many localities reached the difficult truth that the problem was too large in terms of cost for local governments to tackle. State lawmakers have become involved in recent years by providing grants and other incentives for localities to utilize, but, in actuality, those grants have been hard to obtain for many counties.

Hanover County Administrator John Budesky said recently received federal funds will allow officials to put more skin in the game when seeking partnerships and grants and promised big news regarding broadband access for his county in coming days. It’s welcome news for the thousands who will benefit from the efforts, and even better news for localities that realize internet access not only affects education, but almost every aspect of local government. For potential businesses and investors, comprehensive internet coverage is one of the first factors considered when relocating or expanding, and broadband access plays a vital role in the daily operations of most operations. For parents who drove to various locations during at-home learning searching for hot spots so students could complete homework assignments, the news is a welcomed relief. While most of those students in Central Virginia will be returning to in-class instruction, educators are still evaluating possible benefits from online offerings and what actually worked during the pandemic. Expanded electives or access to unique programs are just some of the possibilities for exploration thanks to comprehensive internet coverage that in coming years will be available to almost everyone. I’m not sure it’s fair to contend that the pandemic solved our broadband access problem, but there’s no doubt that federal funding provided during the crisis was the impetus for the massive changes for the better.

Well, sadly, those days have come to an end, as Melody Kinser has retired. After more than 13 years of service to our community, and more than 45 as a journalist, Mel (as she is affectionately known by her friends) is calling it quits. On behalf of Col. David R. Hines and the men and women of the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, we’d like to wish our friend, Melody Kinser, a very happy retirement. Over the years, Mel has been steadfast in her duty to keep the citizens of Hanover County informed in a non-partisan way. Mel was always an excellent partner with the Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office. We always hold ourselves to a very high standard, and we expect members of our community to hold us to that standard as well. This is exactly what Mel did, all while working closely with us to keep our community informed. Mel regularly worked long hours and made last-minute changes in the paper prior to it going to print to ensure the community had the latest, most up-to-date and factual information. plan to implement the Connect Hanover effort in September. Budesky made his comments before a near capacity press conference at the courthouse prior to last week’s regularly scheduled Board of Supervisors meeting. He credited an involved group of citizens including members of the Broadband Committee led by Kristie Proctor and other residents who have maintained a persistent push to improve internet access. “This initiative has one main goal,” Budesky said. “That goal is to get all unserved homes in Hanover County broadband. To achieve that goal we need strong capable partners.” All Points Broadband is involved in initiatives in several Virginia counties that are seeking improved internet service. It specializes in providing service to rural areas, often referred to as last-mile providers. “Their goal is to empower communities by utility grade broadband to underserved markets, deploy fiber and state of the art fixed wire technology to homes and businesses and communities throughout Virginia,” Budesky said. Jimmy Carr, chief executive officer of All Points Broadband, said, “Public-private partnerships that leverage partnerships between electric utilities and internet service providers are making fiber to the home possible in currently underserved areas, and we are applying this proven strategy in Hanover.” All Points Broadband will present a network design for the board’s approval in September, and will partner with the county to apply for Virginia Telecommunications Initiative (VATI), also in September. compiling a grant proposal and should hear back by late 2021 or early 2022. Construction could begin as early as Fall 2022. County residents are currently served by two internet providers, Lumen and Comcast, and those services will continue to play a vital role in the goal of comprehensive coverage. “We look forward to collaborating with all partners in the county to ensure universal broadband access is available to any resident that wants it,” Budesky said. Board Chairman Sean Davis said this initiative is the culmination of years of work by citizens and officials to solve what at times seemed like an unsolvable situation. “Over the years, through citizen contact and information received from two citizen lead broadband access committees, the board was keenly aware of access limitations,” he said. “We also knew that there had to be a more long term and sustainable approach than simply providing county funding to supply the service.” Davis said that level of funding was not available locally. “That funding wasn’t

possible because we had to ensure the appropriate level of funding for law enforcement, education and the like.” The private public partnership announced at the press conference enables a path forward to a solution, according to Davis. “Now that this partnership has been created, we are excited for the opportunity to support remote education for our students and provide economic opportunities for our businesses,” Davis said. “We are more than fortunate for this partnership as it marks the beginning of that journey.” Last week’s press conference was attended by a number of state and local elected officials including state Sen. Ryan McDougle who represents Hanover County. “This critical service will improve quality of life, foster economic prosperity and help move our region forward,” McDougle said. “Hanover’s program is consistent with Governor Northam’s goal to provide universal broadband serve to every home and business in Virginia,” he added. Members from Ashland’s Town Council also attended the event and said the initiative is welcomed news for the Town. For the past two years, the Town has installed more than two miles of fiber to assist it’s business community, but said these efforts will increase attempts to serve other underserved areas of the Town. “This is positive news for Ashland and Hanover County,” Mayor Steve Trivett said. Council member Daniel McGraw said the county’s initiative enhances the Town’s efforts to provide broadband to underserved residents and provides options regarding internet providers. Del. Scott Wyatt, who also represents Hanover, said these types of partnerships are being created around the state and see INTERNET, pg. 9

attorney and human resources office to compile new policies and plans to update the board at its August meeting. The county has closed its vaccination clinic at the old Food Lion location in Ashland, but shots are still widely available at area pharmacies, Taylor said. “While the seven-day positivity rate in Virginia has declined in recent months, we have seen an increase recently,” Taylor said, noting that the Chickahominy Health District is posting numbers that are slightly higher than the state average. In Hanover County, about 8 percent of the population contracted the virus. Since his last update, Taylor
said the county has received updated information for the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Department Health regarding masks in schools this fall. “I will say that Hanover County Public Schools is still evaluating masks for the start of the school year,” Taylor said. He noted that the CDC issued new guidelines last week regarding use of masks indoors, and is encouraging people to wear masks in areas of high transmission. “We are continuing to monitor this and reviewing our policies. Unfortunately, Hanover County is in the substantial transmission area currently…. as of July 25,” Taylor said. “We are having more cases pop up in Hanover County.” Though the rise of cases
is concerning, Taylor said Virginia still ranks low among its neighbors in terms of caseloads, especially when considering states located in the south. Taylor thanked Chickahominy Health District Director Thomas Franck, Fire Chief Jethro Piland and “hundreds of employees and community volunteers who made this effort possible.” During a public comment period, one citizen urged board members to consider mask guidelines, especially with unvaccinated or vulnerable populations. “When I first addressed this board about COVID back in April of last year, I made the comment that there would be a number of people dying, and, unfortunately that actually occurred in our family, “

represent a novel approach to an old problem. “It’s great to have this partnership between Dominion who already has all the aerial poles to put fiber to people’s homes,” he said. “It’s a very different way of thinking as opposed to the old internet service providers that we are used to and uses the current infrastructure that Dominion already has.” Wyatt said he supports the county’s efforts to obtain a VATI grant to bolster this initiative. “Hopefully, they will qualify for this grant.” Del. Buddy Fowler provided the following statement regarding last week’s announcement: “Improving Broadband access in Virginia has been a goal of the Virginia General Assembly for years, and the best solution has always required the public and the private sector working together,” Fowler said. “For this reason, I are thrilled by the announcement of the partnership between Hanover County, All Points Broadband, Dominion Energy, and Rappahannock Electric Cooperative to expand Broadband access in Hanover County. Broadband access is critical to the improving the quality of life, education, expanding economic development, and improving the overall quality of life in Hanover County.” Hanover Schools Superintendent Michael Gill said last week’s announcement is also good news for county students and educators. “From an equity standpoint, this will level the playing field for all of our students,” he said

noting that eventually, this initiative could eliminate the need for hot spots and allow students to access the internet from any location. Budesky encouraged residents to contact their state and local legislators to seek support for this initiative and encouraged all citizens or businesses who want broadband to complete a broadband availability survey at fiber.allpointsbroadband.com. Following the press conference, the board allocated $16.9 million of the $29.3 million received from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) for internet and infrastructure projects. Budesky said those funds place the county in a better position to leverage and obtain grants.
said Hanover resident Chris French. “Due to COVID, my children lost their grandfather.” “There is a discussion that’s going on regarding the School Board in the future regarding what children should be doing with masks,” French said. “I am openly advocating for mask
wearing with CDC recommendations now coming forward, especially for those who are not vaccinated as well as for the protection of school staff members who will be exposed to children without masks.” French said the absence of masks in classrooms plac-
es teachers at risk and could expose others to the virus. “For protection of your employees as well as the children in this county I would encourage you to strongly take the position for continued mask wearing in our school systems,” he concluded.

Family tradition continues as third-generation Hogg enters business Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com On Monday, July 26, Delaney Hogg (daughter of Tripp Hogg and granddaughter of Woody Hogg) entered the family business at ERA Woody Hogg and Associates as the third generation in the Mechanicsville-based business. Woody Hogg graduated from East Carolina University in 1967 and began his real estate career in 1971. He has worked in the Real Estate Industry for 50 years. Woody and his wife, Pam,
opened the ERA Woody Hogg and Associates branch in 1986 together, and five of their six children together all took part in real estate as their career paths since the opening. Tripp Hogg, the oldest of the Hogg/ Boykin group, was the first to enter the business in 1991 upon graduating from East Carolina University. Tripp was heavily involved in the community. Having graduated from Lee Davis High School in 1987, he watched Mechanicsville evolve over the years and settled down here as he navigated his career in real estate. During
his 30-year tenure in the business, he sold thousands of homes in the Central Virginia region. Delaney’s entry to the firm represents the third generation to join the family business. She graduated in May 2020 from East Carolina University with a BSBA in Marketing. Delaney began working part-time with her dad, Tripp, during the summer of 2020 as a Marketing Consultant, where she created video tours of his “flipped” houses and renovations. They had talked about Delaney entering the industry and then placed it on pause when she decided to attend Virginia Tech to pur-
sue a Master’s Degree in Communications. In January of 2021, when Tripp unexpectedly passed away, Delaney’s conversations about entering the industry expanded to other family members. She decided to ‘hit pause’ on her Master’s degree to come home, be with family, and begin learning the industry from her ‘Pop Pop’ aka, Woody Hogg, and other family members. Delaney is currently serving as the Marketing Manager with ERA Woody Hogg & Associates and intends to get her Real Estate license this fall.

ne day before the pandemic closed Hanover schools, more than 3,000 students were scheduled to make their annual living history field trip to Hanover Tavern, an outreach program that has enjoyed widespread acceptance as a valuable teaching tool for Central Virginia fourth graders. With field trips again cancelled for the upcoming year, Tavern officials searched for ways to provide historical material remotely. “For eight years before COVID, we had a field trip program here for fourth graders all over Central Virginia,” Tavern Executive Director David Deal said last week. “The program supported their Standards of Learning (SOL) for Virginia history.” In pre-pandemic years the students would arrive at the Tavern and visit the old Courthouse where they experienced living history through re-enactors. Students received a sample of Patrick Henry’s famous speed and learned of his Hanover heritage. They also met Henry’s daughter, Patsy, and a slave named Thornton. “Thornton was enslaved here at the Tavern in the late 1700s and early 1800s, and he participated in the planning of what we now know as Gabriel’s

Slave Rebellion,” Deal said. The film is designed to mirror the in-person experience for students. “They meet three living history 18th Century characters at the courthouse,” Deal explained. “When they came over here (to the tavern), it would become Civil War history and they would meet four Civil War living history characters here.” Students also hear the story of Martha Ann Fields, who escaped slavery, crossed the Pamunkey River in a hollowed out shell of a boat and made it to Fort Monroe and freedom. The face-to-face program enjoyed increasing numbers annually as more and more systems took advantage of the trips. “The feedback we’ve gotten from the schools, the teachers and the kids has been amazing,” Deal said. “They love the living history.” More than 13,500 fourthgraders visited the Tavern since the program began eight years ago. Providing a virtual field trip featuring the same seven characters seemed like the perfect solution, so Deal and his staff prepared a 52-minute film complete with a PowerPoint presentation to replace the inperson visits. “Knowing that in 2021 we would not be able to do field trips, we recorded a video in lieu of that,” Deal said. “I reached out to the teachers and told them what we’d done and

asked if they were interested. They said send the video.” More than 2,600 students viewed the video last Spring. Deal unveiled the video to the public last week in a gathering at the Tavern. “Nobody’s seen it except for students and teachers.” The living history field trips are one of the Tavern’s major educational outreach efforts, one of about 40 programs sponsored by the Tavern annually. Many of the actors fea-
tured in the film grabbed a bag of popcorn and sat down to enjoy the fruits of their labor at the public premiere last week. Ken Chandler has been involved in the program for years, delighting students with his interpretive talents playing a Confederate soldier. His display of musical instruments and colorful flags is always a hit with the children. “They really get a chance to see the history,” Chandler said as he settled in for the viewing. “It makes it come alive for them when they see it.” He’s been collecting Civil War artifacts for 35 years and displays numerous items from his collection when students visit. Travis Hebert serves on the Hanover Tavern Foundation and participates in many of the educational programs, including the recently released virtual field trip project film. He also plays a Confederate soldier in the 15th Virginia

Regiment returning home after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. Hebert said it’s important to offer a realistic view of the soldier’s plight as they returned to a defeated homeland. “They had seen the horrors of this war,” Hebert said. “Most of these boys just walked home once the war ended.” Hebert said he’s motivated
by a keen interest in historic education. “For me, I’m trying to present fair and accurate balanced portrayals of what American life was…. and the domestic impact of a war ….and how it affected the common person,” he said. Deal said the Tavern is expecting a return to in-person visits in 2022.

Cavalier golf team hopes to build on last state run By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor Last year, King William’s golf team won the Region 2A championship and advanced to the Virginia High School League Class 2 state championships at Virginia Tech’s Pete Dye River Course in Blacksburg. They finished third on a day when no golfer from any team made par. As the new season approaches, Cavalier head coach Jay Blanton’s golfers hope to improve, individually and collectively. And, with only one graduate from last year’s squad – Arria Gross – King William’s golfers have a good chance to do just that. “I think everybody is feeling pretty good about the upcoming season,” said King William head golf coach Jay Blanton. “We have three seniors returning this year. That’s Jonah [Ibanez] and Michael [Knoeller] and Gray [Beasley]. Those three guys, they were a big part of our team last year and our success winning the regional championship and making it to the states. “I think they all are excited about the upcoming season. . . . They all want to win another regional championship and get back to the state championship and have another opportunity

at that level.” Blanton said the experience at the state tournament both whetted his players’ appetites and has given them more con-
fidence. ‘The more experience you get, no matter at what level, benefits the golfer from year to year,” Blanton said. “The further
you go and the better talent you play the further you go, only helps the kids in their maturation process. . . . If they’re able to get to that level again, it’s kind of
a sense of that old cliché, ‘Hey, we’ve been here and done that.’ ” The experience also helped them appreciate the amount of work they have to do to get back
to the state tournament. “I think they understand what it takes to get there, but they also understand that just getting there is tough,” Blanton said. “Once you get to that state level, even the regional level, you’ve got great teams. Once you get to the state, it’s tough, really tough because there’s some really, really good golfers there. They understand that you’re going to have to do a bit extra to be successful once you get to that level.” Ibanez led the Cavaliers in the state tournament with an a 12-over 84, just eight strokes back of medalist Matt Arnold of Chatham. Knoeller, Beasley, Kyla Blanton and Seth Curry all contributed to King William’s postseason success and are all coming back. Their collective experience, with two regional championships and state tournament appearance doesn’t mean they won’t get bouts of jitters. But it should help the Cavalier golfers handle them. “You’re going to have the nerves but it makes it a little easier, I feel like, when you’ve already been there and have that experience,” Blanton said. “Even though you’re going to have them, you kind of know what to expect going in instead of going in green and not knowing what to expect.”

County swim teams clean up at Champs By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – Last year, hundreds of young swimmers missed their chance to participate in a summer ritual, the Greater Richmond Aquatic League Champs meet, as it was cancelled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, however, Champs was held, with hundreds of young swimmers, plenty of fans and coaches, and abundant energy. By the time it was over, Burkwood capped two days full of strong Hanover County performances to win its fourthstraight GRAL championship in five years (given that last year’s Champs was cancelled). “We had 99 (swimmers) make it to Champs, which is our highest ever,” said Burkwood head coach Karen Seeber. “That was exciting.” Seeber was obviously pleased with the win, but most important for her was to see improvement in her swimmers – and there was plenty of that. “What we are really looking for each year – and I think I’ve said it before – are time drops . . . getting technique down,” she said. “Once the technique is down, time drops happen and then then you’re looking at ribbons and so forth.” Burkwood hammered the competition, amassing 1,290 points, almost 400 more than second-place Church Run. Ashland finished eighth, followed by Atlee Recreation Association and The Federal

Burkwood had its own sixevent winner, Charlie Welsh, and a pair of quadruple winners: Teagan Gilhooly and Harrison Hammer. It also had a trio of triple winners: Veronica Burdsall, Russell Odor and Chandler Rose. Molly Sabo was a quad winner and Christine Datovech
a triple winner for Ashland. Reagan Strohhacker was a quad winner for Pebble Creek. County swimmers broke a number of Champs records. The Federal Club’s Barnard set records in the 13-14 girls 100yard individual medley (58.26), 50 breaststroke (30.51), 100 breaststroke (1:05.85) and 100
freestyle (53.12). Gertner set a new record in the 13-14 boys 100 breaststroke (1:01.13). He also broke Champs records in the 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle, but his times were bested by other swimmers. Barnard, Gertner, Molly Hoben and Catherine Callihan set new Champs records in the 13-14 200-yard mixed medley relay (1:49.62) and 200 freestyle relay (1:38.28). Burkwood’s Welsh set a new record in the 11-12 boys 50 breaststroke (31.62). He was
part of Burkwood’s recordbreaking 200 mixed freestyle relay team (with Gilhooly, Chandler Rose and Ava Jane Reynold). Their new Champs record is 1:46.45. Christine Datovech brought her Ashland team new Champs Records in the 15-18 girls 50 freestyle (23.52), 100 backstroke (56.72) and 50 butterfly 25.26). She broke the record in the 50 backstroke, but her time was bested by someone else. AshCreek’s Brock Rempe set Champs records in the 15-18 boys 50 breaststroke (25.84) and 100 breaststroke (56.41). Rempe beat Mechanicsville Recreation’s Logan Deal in the 50 breaststroke, though Deal had likewise broke the previous Champs record. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com. Last year’s GRAL seniors get another chance By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic seemed like it would kill the championship hopes of the 2020 Greater Richmond Aquatic League senior class. This year, those seniors got a reprieve. For many area swimmers, either their teams did not compete in GRAL activities at all, or for those who did, pandemic concerns forced the cancellation of the league’s season-ending Champs meet. But GRAL decided this year to allow last year’s seniors to compete to make up for the lost season when the league held its Champs meet at SwimRVA on July 26-27. “I’m one of the few 19-yearolds who swam GRAL Champs,” said Bell Creek’s Ava Mister. She, like many of last year’s seniors, was devastated when the season was cancelled. “I had a really awesome senior season at Lee-Davis. I was dropping time and everything,” Mister said. “I was so ready to make last summer my best summer of all time, and when I found out we (Bell Creek) weren’t doing anything, I was pretty crushed.” Mister was joined by Battlefield Green’s Claire Grant and Burkwood’s Russell Odor, Ashton Herndon and Bobby Culley in the second-chance senior class.

At first, Odor wasn’t sure Burkwood coach Karen Seeber was on the up-and-up when she told him he could swim again this year. But she managed to reassure him. The Burkwood swimmers did get a chance to compete somewhat, but the season seemed incomplete without Champs. He took advantage of his second chance. “This year, in Champs, I dropped five seconds total time from all my events,” he said. “I PR’d in things I thought would never happen. So I’m forever grateful that I got to swim in this Champs.” By the time it was over, Odor had won three events in the varsity division: the 15-18 boys 100-yard individual medley, the 50 freestyle and the 50 butterfly. His teammate, Ashton Herndon, won the junior varsity division of the 50 freestyle. On the girls side, Grant won the varsity division of the 50 backstroke and Mister won the junior varsity division of the 50 butterfly. Grant, like Odor, competes at the college level. While GRAL might seem lower stakes than their college competitions, getting to compete in GRAL one more time was a gift. “Just being able to be back in this pool, especially where I grew up swimming all my high Dave Lawrence/The Local school state meets and all my Bell Creek swimmer and assistant coach Ava Mister swims the butterfly leg of the 100-meter individual medley in a Greater club meets, it’s really something Richmond Aquatic League virtual meet with Battlefield Green on July 13. She was one of a handful of seniors from last year special,” she said. allowed to compete in Champs this year as the 2020 meet was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Volleyball coaching a family tradition at Atlee By Zach Joachim Richmond Times-Dispatch Before she got married, people would frequently refer to new Atlee girls volleyball head coach Kasey Ogden by her maiden name, “Coach Carpenter.” To which she would reply: “I’m not Coach Carpenter, that’s my dad. I’m Coach Kasey.” Now, after two decades of Ogden’s father, Curtis Carpenter, leading the Raiders’ program, the father-daughter duo are swapping roles. Ogden, who played for her dad in the early 2000s before setting assists records and winning a conference title at Averett University, will take over the varsity job, while her father switches to the junior varsity role that Ogden had held since 2014. When Ogden interviewed for the varsity job, she was asked what she’d do differently from her father. Her response: “Not a lot.” “We are 100% a team, that’s why it’s such a smooth transition,” Ogden said. “We’ve told our girls that this is what’s going to happen, and they just said ‘OK.’ They weren’t surprised, they know how much we work together. “There’s no egos, he’s not afraid to come to me and say ‘Hey, what do you think I should do with this lineup?’ And I’m not afraid to come to him and say ‘Yo, you need to call a timeout.’ We feed off of each other so

She was a setter in her playing days, a
position that demands assertiveness and leadership skills, traits which Ogden has carried into her coaching career. She took her first coaching job in 2008 immediately upon graduating college and always envisioned herself following in father’s footsteps on the sidelines. Carpenter is excited to “return to his roots” by taking the JV job, Ogden said, a role he

among Richmond’s strongest girls volleyball programs. Ogden called Carpenter her “concert buddy” — the two are very alike in terms of their personalities, she said, and share a close bond. Though it wasn’t always easy being the coach’s daughter in her playing days, Ogden said she’s grown to appreciate her father’s philosophies a great deal. “I am sure that I’ll have

wasn’t ready to pass on to someone outside the program. She added that, in recent years, the joke has been that Carpenter is the “old scary guy,” so people instead come to Ogden with criticism. Then they figure out that he’s the “softy,” and she can be more commanding. “I’m excited to bring new knowledge to our program, but the foundation of the program in the sense of our discipline and things like that, it’s not going to change,” Ogden said. “I’m sure I’ll be nervous and have moments, I’m a competitor at heart so I don’t like to lose.” Though the Raiders lost eight seniors in the Class of 2021, Ogden’s JV team is coming off an undefeated campaign. She can’t practice her team in their home gym for a few more weeks while work is being done on the school’s HVAC system. But the new varsity coach is rearing to hit the ground running as the new season brings with it a changing of the guard within the Atlee volleyball family. “We might not be rebuilding as much as people think we should be. These young girls that are coming in, they’re already buying into our philosophies, our discipline,” Ogden said. “It’s exciting, we have some work to do, but I think these kids coming up are really willing and determined to keep that high level of play going.”

Kickers’ defense unyielding in win over Tucson By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – At times this season, the Richmond Kickers have struggled with getting back quickly enough when opposing teams were on the attack. Saturday at City Stadium, that wasn’t a problem, and that proved good. Despite ferocious secondhalf pressure from trailing FC Tucson, the Kickers’ defense collapsed when needed to aid goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald and thwarted attack after attack in claiming a 1-0 victory for their
fifth clean sheet of the season – but first clean sheet in weeks. By the time it was over, Tucson had dominated in terms of possession time and outshot the Kickers 30-9. The visitors also had 10 corners while Richmond just had three. “I played for a guy in college named Clive Charles, and he was one of the best coaches that I’ve ever met in my life. He used to say that ‘Not all paintings are Picassos,’ ” said Richmond Kickers Chief Sporting Officer and head coach Darren Sawatzky. “Tonight wasn’t exactly pretty, but it was effective. I’m really, really proud of
our guys. They found a way to win and that was important.” Richmond was given a golden opportunity early in the game – and took advantage of it. Striker Emiliano Terzaghi was fouled inside the box and the Kickers awarded a penalty kick. Terzaghi feinted to get Tucson keeper Wallis Lapsley to dive left, but put the ball in the right side of the net to make it 1-0 in the 19th minute. “Anything to do to help the team. If it comes to me to be able to score, then that’s fine,” Terzaghi said. “I felt like last week that we were able to score, didn’t get the win. So, to be able
to score in this game and to be able to get this result, I’ve very happy.” The Kickers had a number of additional opportunities throughout the first half, but Terzaghi’s penalty was the only goal they got, but it proved the only goal they needed. From the latter part of the first half through the rest of the game, Richmond’s defense proved impenetrable. Fitzgerald finished the evening with eight saves, compared to just one for Lapsley. For him, it was a nice turnaround from his performances of late. “I haven’t been playing at

the level I wanted to be at these last few weeks,” Fitzgerald said. “So it was important for me to be able to come back (to City Stadium) to have a good showing ant home and to be able to do what I needed to do to help my team get the points.” Fitzgerald praised his defenders. “The guys in front of me were fantastic, lots of blocked shots, blocked crosses,” he said. “We talked about it going into the match – these are the things that win us the games. These are the kind of actions that sometimes go unnoticed, but that are huge. . . . It was good to
get a clean sheet.” The keeper said that planning in addition to execution paid off in the win. “We had a really good game plan going in,” Fitzgerald said. “We knew what their strengths were and what they would try to do. We didn’t allow them to do those things . . . just not giving them space behind us.” The win gives the Kickers a foothold on the USL League One playoff map. The three points from the win put them in sixth place overall. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.
