National Night Out is recognized as a community event that strengthens relationships among citizens and the men and women who serve to protect them. It allows the public to interact with the officers they see on the street daily, and allow one on one relationships. A series of events was planned at a number of neighborhoods and officers, Fire/ EMS workers and other officials made appearances at the event, founded in 1984 to instill trust between citizens and police. Board of Supervisors denies AR zoning for Hamilton Farm project By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local At a public hearing last month, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors voted to deny an application for a zoning request in the Beaverdam District
that would have permitted construction of a 27-lot subdivision located on 170 acres near Blunt and Independence Roads. No residents spoke out against the request, but in a close vote, Hanover
supervisors issued a 4-3 decision denying the request. The land is currently zoned A-1 agricultural and AR-6 (agricultural/residential), but the developer requested a rezoning to AR-6.
The submitted application outlines a subdivision with 27 lots ranging in size from 5 to 16 acres and would be accessed by a private road built to county standards off Providence Road. A current residence on the site
accessed by Governor’s Lane would be preserved, but the small road would be closed when construction began. The county planning staff concluded the submitted plan more closely aligns see ZONING, pg. 7

Hanover Safe Place offers new program for teens (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Emily Agee, Youth and Family Services Advocate for Hanover Safe Place.) Hanover Safe Place is launching a new program for teens in the Hanover community called “Upstanding Youth: Advocates for a Healthy Hanover.” The teen leadership program is designed to prevent teen dating violence and sexual assault by empowering teens and giving them the skills to create lasting change in their communities. Teens will learn about important social issues affecting their communities. They will then acquire facilitation skills to become leaders by developing a project to address one of these issues.
This year-long program seeks to promote healthy relationships for all youth in Hanover. This program is free of charge. The program is open to all high school-aged teens living in Hanover County. Applications are open now and due by Sept. 1. The application for the program is available at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F AIpQLSfK9epqms3CUBjqLoqhPn2gzN1PFh UdPLBV0WbfdKqXB3RinA/viewform. The second of two information sessions for teens and their caregivers will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at Wayside Park. For more information, contact Elena Brooks-Perkins, director of community engagement, at community@hanoversafeplace.com.
Summer pedestrian safety tips (Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Chief Douglas A. Goodman of the Ashland Police Department.) ASHLAND -- With summer upon us as well as the end of the school year, the Ashland Police Department wants to remind everyone of pedestrian safety tips while driving and walking around town. With warmer temperatures, more residents and visitors will be walking around town on sidewalks and crosswalks, many of them children enjoying summer break. Tips for drivers: Be alert, do not drive distracted. Expect the unexpected. Children may cross the street in unexpected locations or suddenly run in front of you. Double check your surroundings before backing out of your driveway and parking spots. Tips for parents: Teach children to cross streets at cross-
walks or intersections with pedestrian signals. Stop, Look, and Listen before crossing the street. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers prior to crossing a street. Remind children not to play in or along streets and parking lots. All residents are reminded that Virginia state code requires motorists to yield for pedestrians that are in crosswalks by slowing down or stopping if necessary. State law also requires that pedestrians show due regard for approaching traffic before crossing the road. Pedestrians can improve their safety by wearing bright colors during the day and reflective material or flashing lights at night. While light colored clothing can be helpful in making you visible at night, reflective tape or reflective fabric is much better. During the next few weeks, the Ashland Police Department will be conducting speed and pedestrian safety patrols in areas heavily travelled by pedestrians. Remember: Be Safe and Be Seen!

T
hink there is no light at the end of the tunnel? Consider the story of Drew Robinson. To the outside observer, and even those closest to the budding minor league baseball star, his life appeared to be almost perfect. Unfortunately what seems idyllic to the majority is actually not even close to the reality of a person struggling through mental illness and depression. Robinson came from a baseball family and followed his brother Chad to the world of professional baseball, skipping a college career. He was rated among the top rookies of the 2010 draft, alongside top rookies like Bryce Harper, and landed a spot with the Houston Astros’ organization. He enjoyed some powerful seasons during a seven-year minor league career, but also suffered the ups and downs associated with life in the pros. Although he had a comprehensive support system in the form of a loving family and a devoted girlfriend, Drew knew something was missing and he eventually began to detest his life. Outside, it all looked perfect. But inside, Drew was becoming increasingly disturbed with a life he didn’t think he deserved, a daily existence he had learned to hate, and the struggle to find self-worth and happiness. Brief stints in the major leagues and almost instant returns to the minors didn’t help with Robinson’s plight. The almost euphoric sensation of a call up to the big leagues was immediately replaced with the disappointment of failure and the self-doubt that accompanied it. In April of 2020, it all became too much for Robinson to endure, and, in an instant, grabbed a
pistol and shot himself. It was what he thought would provide a sure solution to years of suffering with mental illness. Now with San Francisco Giants, Robinson was well aware of his personal demons, but was unable to communicate his desperation to anyone, even those closest to him. His off-and-on girlfriend since high school had endured it all. The optimistic promises, the deep pits of depression and his seemingly uncaring behavior were not enough to force her departure. After abruptly ended engagements and a cancelled wedding the two pursued separate lives, but she never lost her commitment to the boy she had fallen in love with in high school. Robinson thought of her as he awakened the next morning in intense pain, and quickly realized the extent of the damage. He sat in the exact place he’d been 20 hours earlier when he fired the shot, and faced the most important decision of his life. Holding the pistol in one hand and a phone with 9-1-1 keyed in the other, he contemplated his future. He chose life and dialed for emergency assistance. Robinson survived the shot that destroyed his right eye and endured long weeks of recovery in the hospital. Due to COVID, no in-person visits were allowed. That did not deter soul mate Daiana from driving to the parking lot each night just to be close, and text support. After the incident, Drew addressed his mental health issues. He became open with his family and friends, and now attends regular therapy sessions. He’s not afraid to acknowledge a bad day or express feelings of depression to friends and family.

He told a reporter that the bullet that entered his head that frightful day had not killed him, but had killed his ego, and a man that had one year earlier hated himself, learned to love life. His passion for baseball also returned. One year after the incident, Drew took the field in his hometown of Las Vegas. After a decent run with the minor league club, Robinson announced his retirement and accepted a job in the San Francisco front office as a mental health advocate in July 2021. Drew’s story is disturbing, the details troubling and the reality too intense to fathom, but it’s a story he’s willing to share if it assists others who suffer. He encourages them to share their distress, trust in the love of family and friends and address mental issues early and often. According to reports, Daiana and Drew remain best friends and are taking it one day at a time. Drew explains that his life was spared so he could share his story and help others who are suffering, and he has found peace in a life that — although it appeared absolutely perfect to many on the outside — in reality, provided only turmoil. I think it’s fair to say we are all rooting for him, and thankful for the lives his message will impact. Assistance is available at the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255.

ZONING Continued from pg. 1
with RC (Rural Conservation) zoning, and Planning Director David Maloney said the AR designation does not preserve the rural nature of the property. “The applicant's intent is to promote this subdivision as a farming community while focusing on preservation of the existing features of the property,” Maloney said. “The AR-6 District does not adequately protect or encourage agricultural activity by dividing agricultural and forestal lands in to large residential lots.” Maloney said the application if approved would increase by right density in a rural portion of the county. “Considering the size and natural features of the property, staff recommends the applicant consider the RC (rural conservation) as a more suitable zoning district,” Maloney said before recommending denial of the project as presented. He said RC District zoning is better suited to protect agricultural and forestal land as well as protecting the open space. The Planning Commission recommended approval of the project providing additional proffers regarding roof material and other issues were addressed, but did not receive a reply within the 21-day response period effectively changing their decision to denial, according to Maloney. The applicant’s attorney, Andrew Condlin, saw it differently shortly after issuing a revised set of proffers dated July 8. “I apologize about the 21 days,” Condlin said. “My understanding at the Planning Commission was… that they did not make it subject to the changes that were being requested. We wanted to continue work with the residents on a couple of issues,” he added. “We are asking for AR-6. We’re not asking for RC. We
are asking for an assessment from the staff, the Planning Commission and this board for an AR-6 proposal,” Condlin told board members. “Given all the circumstances, I find it hard to believe that this is controversial, but it is,” Condlin said. The planned development features large lot resident sites where micro farming and other agricultural uses will be encouraged. Condlin said the plan calls for HOA governed community “that will encourage lifestyles that focus on healthy living around agriculture.” “This sounds like Hanover County, if you ask me,” he added. The custom designed farmhouses will be a minimum of 2,400 square feet and could sell for from $750,000 to $1 million. Condlin contended the project does conform with the current Comprehensive Plan and furthers the county’s overall plan for rural preservation due to its agricultural nature. He pointed to a number of AR-6 approvals in recent years for lots both smaller and larger than the current request in response to some concerns asserting AR-6 is better suited for smaller lots. Regarding an adjustment in the application’s request to staff’s recommendation to seek approval through RC zoning, Condlin left little question regarding the applicant’s willingness to amend the application. “RC does not require that farming occur,” he said. “As a matter of fact, RC doesn’t even allow farming on the small clustered lots, only allowing it on the large preservation lot,” Condlin added. He admitted it’s a new approach. “We’re trying to do something a little different in Hanover County by having a homeowner being able to farm on his own lot. “People want to be around
and part of farming and get their hands in the soil,” Condlin said. “These people just want to do it on their own lot… and have more than just a garden.” A number of residents, many of them from the area surrounding the proposed development, expressed support for the project, many of them conceding that the property was destined for development and this application better mirrored their desires for the neighborhood. Susan Leachman said, “ I hope you will consider AR-6 zoning for the Hamilton Farm on Independence Road,” she said. “AR-6 is more feasible for the Hamilton property because it supports green space.” Alice Murphy lives a half mile from the Hamilton property and said she realized this was a unique project but urged board members to approve the rezoning. “I hope you will consider the benefits not only to the Beaverdam District, but also to Hanover County,” she said. “ I know of no good reason why it should not be approved.” “The neighborhood is in total support of this development,” said Governors Lane resident Debbie Crowder. “I would like you to think long and hard about denying this request. It’s rare for us to look at something and say this is something we can live with, and this is acceptable to us,” she added. Bucky Stanley represents Beaverdam and said it’s his intention to keep the District rural and said many residents who spoke in favor or the project had called him early and expressed opposition to the project. He said AR-6 zoning was developed to assist farmers who needed to sell a small number of lots to provide cash flow for their agricultural pursuits, and moved to deny the application. Ashland supervisor Faye Prichard seconded the motion, but said she could not support the denial. “I am going to make
the second for this motion but I cannot support this denial,” she said. Vice chair Angela KellyWiecek also voted no on the motion to deny, stating the only reason she heard to vote against the project was the fact that AR-6 zoning was not designed for this type of project. “But, this is a beautiful result of that option,” she said. “When I think of what we would want as a rural community… this is really exciting. I have not heard one single compelling reason to turn this down,” she added. But Mechanicsville supervisor Canova Peterson differed and said he would support Stanley’s motion to deny. “I think that this is invading and changing the agricultural nature of our county.” South Anna supervisor Sue Dibble joined Prichard and Kelly-Wiecek in voting to deny the motion, or in essence, approve the request, while Chair Sean Davis voted with Stanley, Herzberg and Peterson to approve the denial.

Woody Hogg with his granddaughter Delaney Hogg who entered the family business at ERA Woody Hogg and Associates. Delaney’s entry to the firm represents the third generation to join the family business. She graduated in May 2020 from East Carolina University with a BSBA in marketing. Delaney began working part-time with her dad, Tripp, during the summer of 2020 as a Marketing Consultant, where she created video tours of his “flipped” houses and renovations. They had talked about Delaney entering the industry and then placed it on pause when she decided to attend Virginia Tech to pursue a Master’s Degree in Communications. In January of 2021, when her dad Tripp unexpectedly passed away, Delaney’s conversations about entering the industry expanded to other family members. She decided to ‘hit pause’ on her Master’s degree to come home, be with family, and begin learning the industry from her ‘Pop Pop’ aka, Woody Hogg, and other family members. Delaney is currently serving as the marketing manager with ERA Woody Hogg & Associates and intends to get her Real Estate license this fall.

ARPA funds could address long term needs By Jim Ridolphi for the Mechanicsville Local Ashland is experiencing what some may consider a pressing but pleasant financial situation. During the next weeks, Ashland Town Council members, residents and administrators will begin to formulate a plan on how to spend the $8.1 million headed the town’s way as a result of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The federal allotments are designed to assist localities recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and its numerous impacts on the economy, economic development and citizens who suffered during the period. Assistant Town Manager Matt Reynal outlined the initial guidelines and requirements regarding the funds and how they might be used in Ashland. Town Manager Josh Farrar clarified the preliminary presentation stating it contained no recommendations, just examples of how the funding could be allocated. Farrar and Reynal are expected to return to Council next month with a preliminary plan regarding what projects might be considered for funding, but Council members are also urging the public to submit their ideas for the money. “We want to hear from them,” said Mayor Steve Trivett. The Town received $1.3 million In CARES federal funding earlier this year and targeted those funds for projects that included small business assistance, marketing and unemployment compensation. Reynal said the CARES Act money was designed to “put out the fire” while the ARPA funding is designed to fix the foundation. The anticipated ARPA allotment could replace lost tax revenue, restore lost services and positions and reward essential workers, but requires more detailed documentation and

justification. Reynal told council members there is no rush to devise a spending plan, but the funds must be used by December 31, 2024, but could be extended for projects under contract or construction until 2026. “We will have three and a half years to expend the funds, and for some projects… until 2026,” Reynal said. The funds are designed to “prepare the community for a better future,” according to Reynal, and he urged council members to consider long term solutions to nagging problems in the upcoming plan. Since larger localities and counties received their funding months ago, how those jurisdictions distribute their funding could provide a guide for Ashland’s spending plan. Half of the funding, about $4 million, is already in the bank, and an equal amount is expected next June. For example, Hanover County reserved $2 million of its funding for future COVID mitigation, but placed

the bulk of its allotment, about $16 million, to address broadband access in underserved areas of the county. Reynal said interest earned on ARPA funds in the bank are not required to be used for ARPAapproved projects. He noted the $8 million allocated for the Town is almost equal to the annual general fund of around $10 million. “It’s a lot to bite off so be as deliberate as possible and ask as many questions as you need to,” Reynal told the Council. Congress passed the relief bill in March, and the package includes funding for states and localities recovering from the COVID pandemic, infrastructure assistance, emergency rental assistance, education stabilization and stimulus checks sent to Americans earlier this year. The funding also could cover the county’s government services losses during the pandemic and provide money for infrastructure improvements including broadband and water and sewer projects, and other things.
The funding opportunities are arranged in four categories, each with a specific set of requirements and guidelines. The first category includes funding to mitigate the negative health effects of the pandemic on the community and its citizens. For example, the county could fund HVAC improvements, distribute rewards for vaccinated citizens or support local clinics or other agencies who assist uninsured clients. The first grouping also addressed economic impacts from the pandemic and could provide funding for outdoor dining expansions, grants to venues and lodging and downtown Wi-Fi for visitors. Affordable housing and workforce development represent other options available. Category II addresses revenue loss for the community. Reynal said growth rates from the last three normal years are compared with 2020 figures to determine that rate of loss. He estimated that loss at $2.1 million. As examples of how these funds could be utilized include funding for economic development, replacing old treasury and accounting systems, purchasing new phones for Ashland Police or hiring a community engagement manager. The third group of funding could compensate or reward essential workers or those engaged in careers that did not allow them to stay home during the pandemic. The fourth group includes funding for water, sewer and other infrastructure projects. Broadband expansion or improvement and access to clean drinking water to underserved communities qualify as legitimate projects in this category. Vice Mayor John Hodges said he’s especially interested in finding solutions for the town’s water supply see ARPA, pg. 15

A re-enactment of The Parsons’ Cause Trial will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Historic Hanover Courthouse.
Re-enactment of The Parsons' Cause Trial set Aug. 28 Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com HANOVER -- On Saturday, Aug. 28, The Parsons' Cause Foundation Inc. will present a re-enactment of The Parsons' Cause Trial at the Historic Hanover Courthouse. The re-enactment is presented in conjunction with Hanover County's tri-centennial celebration being held that same day. The time of the re-enactment has not yet been determined. Once the time has been determined, it will be made public. Although the county has now lifted COVID-19 restrictions for the Historic Hanover Courthouse, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors has concluded that, at this late date, it cannot contract with presenters and produce quality programs for the summer of 2021. Rather, the board will concentrate its efforts on returning with gusto in 2022 and presenting a star lineup of presenters next summer. “We thank you for your interest in and support of our programs,” said the Board of Directors of The Parsons' Cause Foundation Inc.

Hanover Weekend at Kings Dominion is planned for August 21-22 and August 28-29. The county will unveil and cut the ribbon on its Hanover Museum of History and Culture located in the old Clerk’s Office at the Courthouse. Board members and the county administrator will provide remarks at this “Make History with Us” event on August 28 at 9:30 a.m. Museum tours will be available and officials will bury a time capsule marking the special event. Food trucks and musical entertainment will also be provided, and gifts for the first 500 families will be provided on the Courthouse Green. A Classic Car Cruise-In sponsored the by Recreation and Parks Department is planned for Sept. 11 at Hanover High School. A regularly scheduled event that has been incorporated in the celebration. “We are very excited about this event and think it will appeal to the general public and all facets of it,” Harris said. Former Hanover assistant superintendent John Hodges and county administrator John Budesky will host a community conversation regarding the museum and its impact on Sept. 23. In conjunction with an exhibit featured at the Museum, they will discuss the many changes they’ve witnessed in the county. “John and John will have this conversation over at Hanover Tavern and the discussion will be replayed at the Museum,” Harris said. Hanover’s annual Autumn Fest is scheduled for Sept. 25 also at Hanover Tavern, and

Route 301 for Nov. 11. Harris said more information will be coming regarding events surrounding the countywide celebration. The county’s actual day of origin is November 26. Harris said the numerous events are the result of sponsorships with Dominion Energy and partnerships with Hanover Tavern and Scotchtown. Tavern director David Deal said his organization is anxious
and excited to participate in the celebration. “We are very pleased the county has reached out to us to partner,” Deal said. In addition to an active role at the Squirrels game, the Tavern is cross-promoting the county’s birthday celebration on the Courthouse Green. “We’ll be participating in that,
and when we do our Hanover Autumn Fest, they’ll be a part of that as well. We’re doing as much as we can together to recognize the 300th,” Deal concluded. Harris said the sponsorship and partnerships will contribute to the success of the planned events, and residents are encouraged to search the county’s web-
site and social medial sites for more information. “They will be promoting our events and we will be promoting theirs,” Harris said. “Cross promotion is very important to us here and we’ll be asking board members to reach out to their many contacts and let people know what we’ve got going on here.”

Flying Squirrels give county a birthday win By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor RICHMOND – For decades, baseball was a sport that brought diverse groups together and fostered a sense of community. Saturday at The Diamond, baseball accepted that mission again with the Richmond Flying Squirrels hosting a part of Hanover County’s 300th birthday celebration. As an added bonus, the Squirrels brought the home fans a victory in addition to a good show. “This is All-American, to have a birthday party at the ballpark with a thousand of your friends. It’s wonderful,” said Sean Davis, chair of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors. “That’s why we’re so grateful that everybody was able to come out, particularly now.” Davis was part of a host of Hanover County representatives throwing out ceremonial first pitches. Along with Davis, other hurlers were county Administrator John Budesky, Cold Harbor District Supervisor F. Michael Herzberg, South Anna District Supervisor Sue Dibble, Mechanicsville District supervisor W. Canova Peterson and Peterson’s designated thrower, his great-grandson Aiden Mundy. The first pitch of choice was a curve, with Budesky tossing a looper worthy of Boston Red Sox legend Bill Lee, but Mundy showed he could throw heat for a strike.

off batter Simon Whiteman – who subsequently stole second – Leverett retired the next three batters to end the Flying Squirrel scoring threat. The second inning, both sides went down in order. In the third, the Fightin’ Phils got their first baserunner, Jack Conley, on the first of only two walks given up by Morris. Conley was sacrificed to second by Leverett, and there he was stranded. After three innings of what was looking to be a pitcher’s duel, the game remained scoreless. Just because there was little action on the basepaths doesn’t mean there was little action in the block of seats reserved for Hanover County residents. For its birthday, the county had bought a block of tickets down the left field line and sold them to residents for $3 a seat. The seats were sold out, but the heavy rain earlier that day encouraged many of the ticket holders to make alternate plans. Nevertheless, the show went on. “Mother Nature wanted to mess it up in the beginning,” said Flying Squirrels CEO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “But we did not let Mother Nature mess with Hanover County’s 300th anniversary.” The smaller county crowd at The Diamond made up for the diminished attendance with overflowing energy, especially among the shorter – i.e., younger – attendees. Children who normally needed no encouragement to jump around enthusiastically complied between innings early in the game when the House of Pain song, “Jump Around,” was played. Not only did parents encourage their kids to jump; some even helped their kids get Dave Lawrence/The Local

more air than their short legs would otherwise mange. Of course, there were goodies like popcorn and cotton candy to supply ample fuel for ample amounts of appropriately manic energy. One of the cotton candyfueled contingent was 5-yearold Ellis Peace, who attended the game with his dad, Justin, and mom, Jessica. While Ellis was busy munching on a big cloud of sugary filaments, his mother explained what additional treats the game offered the youth. “Ellis was playing in the Atlee Little League this year,” Jessica Peace said. “So being able to come to a baseball game and see the bigger players play gives him something to aspire to, to see how it’s really done instead of the funniness that happens with the 5-year-olds on Atlee’s baseball fields.” Ellis himself had a unique style of play this past season. “Ellis this season liked to stand in his position with his hat turned backwards and facing the outfield so that looked like he was playing baseball,” his mother said. “But he was really just watching the people in the outfield.” Ellis’ method had additional benefits. “He saw every airplane that went over, though,” Justin Peace said. “He watched it until it was gone.” Remember, Ellis is only 5. These things happen. The county’s birthday celebration at The Diamond was a special event for the family. “My family has been in Hanover County since the 1600s. We have a road named after us down near Black Creek – Peace Road,” Justin Peace said. “We came down here on the second ship to Jamestown – the Coleman side of my family – and the Peace’s have been here almost as long as that. It’s pretty cool to be here 300 years.”

Rockville teams begin Cal Ripkin World Series runs Staff reports sports@mechlocal.com Two teams of Rockville 12-and-unders began play in their respective Cal Ripken World Series last week. One team in participating in the 12u Majors 70 World Series in Branson, Missouri, while the other is playing in the 12u Majors 60 World Series in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Rockville’s Majors 60 team has struggled through a rainy weekend in Florida that has complicated its schedule, but it did earn a 10-0 win over tournament host Palm Beach Gardens-American Saturday.
The Majors 60 team next faced Owensboro, a team atop their pool standings with two wins – a 9-2 win over Hanford Saturday and an 8-5 win over Kennewick Sunday. The Rockville-Owensboro game took place Monday after this edition went to press. Rockville was supposed to face Hanford Tuesday and Kennewick on the final day of pool play Wednesday. While some in the stands focused on barely restrained silliness – like giving their dad a pie in the face between innings – and county history, the professional players on The Diamond, however, kept their focus on the action. That focus paid off for the Squirrels in the fourth inning when they scored the game’s only run. Reading was the first to show some offensive spark with two outs in the top of the frame with back-to-back singles by Josh Stephen and Grenny Cumana. Second, however, was as far as any of the Fightin’ Phils got. Richmond third baseman David Villar put himself in scoring position with a one-out double in the bottom of the inning. First baseman Frankie Tostado hit a long fly ball to Reading’s Cumana in right field, but Villar was able to tag up and advance to third. Richmond right fielder Diego Rincones did the rest, hitting a single to left field to bring Villar home.

was happy to serve the people of Hanover County. “We pride ourselves on being a place where people can celebrate anything,” Parnell said. “Hanover County did a great job tonight celebrating its
300th anniversary. “It wasn’t just tonight. It’s something that we’ve been working on for an awfully long time, their folks and our folks combining and working together to make it just a great
celebration.” While sports editor Dave Lawrence grew up in Louisiana, he has roots in Hanover County that extend back to the 1600s. He can be reached at dlawrence@ mechlocal.com.

Hanover Master Gardener programs return for summer Contributed Report The Mechanicsville Local

SHLAND -- Master Gardeners are trained community leaders working with individuals to increase knowledge and understanding of environmentally sound horticulture. They seek to improve the quality of life in their communities through education. Master Gardeners are specially trained by Virginia Cooperative Extension which is a group of Specialist and Extension Agents who extend knowledge of Virginia’s Land Grant Universities: Virginia Tech and Virginia State. Did your yard suffer during the recent weeks of no rain? What is an Emerald Ash Borer? Have you ever thought of growing your own peanuts or small yard vegetable garden? If so, these questions will be answered during the very popular summer Home Gardening
Series (HGS). Summer HGS is virtual via ZOOM started on Thursday, June 10, and continues at 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays. The calendar of topics is below. Preregistration is required at http://bit.ly/ hanoverhgs. If you have a suggestion for a HGS topic, email hanover.master.gardener@gmail.com. Also, Hanover Master Garden Plant clinics will be returning in person to Ashland Farmer Market, Montpelier Market, Lowe’s on U.S. 360 in Mechanicsville.
