Parade comes home for Christmas Public airs concerns at VDOT hearing Agency presents recommendations on truck restrictions By Jim Ridolphi For The Mechanicsville Local

After a year off due to COVID-19, the Mechanicsville Christmas Parade returned on Sunday in the Village of Mechanicsville. Presented each year by the Mechanicsville Rotary Club, this year’s theme for the parade was “I’ll be Home for Christmas.” Shown above are members of the Atlee High School Marching Band under the direction of Paul Rozecki. Performance Food Group project result of combined efforts By Jim Ridolphi For The Mechanicsville Local Gov. Ralph Northam announced in November an $82 million investment in Hanover County by Richmond-based Performance Food Group (PFG) that will bring 125 jobs to Hanover County.

The national food service and distribution company plans to build a regional distribution and sales center in the Cardinal Commerce Center located north of Cedar Lane on Route 1 to service operations. After emerging from a competetive process that included North Carolina and

Pennsylvania, Hanover was tapped and the company announced plans to build a 325,000-square-foot facility at the South Anna District site earlier this month. “Since the company’s founding in Richmond in 1885, Performance Food see PFG, pg. 21

Following a series of public requests, petitions and surveys, Hanover County officials submitted requests to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to restrict truck traffic on four county roadways in 2020. Those roads are located in the vicinity of a Wegmans Distribution Center planned for the area, but traffic problems in that area have historically increased, and residents have voiced concerns traffic concerns for years. Last week, VDOT held a public hearing on the four proposals and allowed residents two minutes each to express their

views on the proposed restrictions. The agency presented its recommendations in an informational session prior to the public comments. Those recommendations still require final VDOT approval, but the agency sought public input which will also be included in the consideration before a final decision is reached. VDOT staff recommended through truck restrictions for Ashcake Road between Sliding Hill and Lewistown roads and for Atlee Station/Atlee roads. Two roads were not recommended by VDOT for through truck restrictions. New Ashcake Road and Peaks Road did not meet the qualifying criteria, but could be reconsidered following public comments. Phillip Frazer, assistant resident engineer for VDOT, presented a brief history of the requested route restrictions and see VDOT, pg. 8

ince being named Hanover’s Christmas Mother, Jeannie Hummel and husband Tom have crisscrossed the county getting the word out and gathering support for this years’s effort. This weekend alone, the couple has two parades and a tree lighting, and it doesn’t get any easier as the holidays approach. “This coming weekend is ‘parade weekend’ – I will be representing the Hanover Christmas Mother for both the Richmond and Mechanicsville parades. It’s very exciting that these events can occur this year,” she said last week. The generous support of the community makes the job easier, and Jeannie said serving as this year’s Christmas Mother has been a humbling and rewarding experience for the couple. “The Hanover community is very generous to this loved tradition. I feel especially blessed by the support I, and the program, (have) received from my church, Fairmount Christian Church, my American Legion Auxiliary (Post 195) and, of course, my family,” Jeannie said in an interview last week. “My husband, Tom, has been especially supportive, attending programs with me and helping with ideas, such as the ‘Spirit Events’ we have set up with the Sports Page Restaurants in Mechanicsville and Ashland and the Riverbound Café in Mechanicsville,” she said. Tom has been an integral part of this year’s efforts and accompanies his wife to most scheduled events, but offers moral support and lends a helping hand when needed. It’s a group effort for a good cause. “I laugh and tell people my role is ‘driving Ms. Jeannie.’ I have been her ‘chauffeur’ to be sure she finds and arrives to meeting places in a timely manner – she is obsessed with being on time,” Tom said. “I have also offered her much support with various logistics, the mailings the Doswell Ruritan Club has accomplished, editing her correspondence as needed, and providing input and assurance with what she plans to say to

You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant LETTERS By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

W

hat’s your favorite Thanksgiving song? I didn’t pay much attention when Arlo Guthrie released “Alice’s Restaurant” in 1967 and could not have predicted the enormous popularity the song would enjoy for generations. I was never sure exactly what the song was about, and its length made it difficult to decipher the lyrics. It’s even more difficult to understand how the song became a Thanksgiving favorite, but I heard it on several radio stations last week. Some even played the 18-minute full version of the recording. That still didn’t quench my thirst for knowledge regarding the song and its holiday connection, so I searched for answers. Here’s what I found. In the fall of 1967, Guthrie and musician friend Rich Robbins were in Massachusetts. The talented son of folk hero and icon Woodie Guthrie, Arlo, was contemplating a career as a park ranger as they stopped to visit a friend. The pair was visiting their friend, Alice, who lived in a church outside of Stockbridge. She had planned a huge Thanksgiving dinner for her friends at the church that was often the gathering place for what locals called “a bunch of hippies.” The next day, Guthrie and Robbins decided to help Alice clean the mess left behind by the gathering and piled the huge pile of debris into the their VW van and headed for the dump. But, the dump was closed, and the pair searched for alternative sites. In desperation, the pair finally settled on a hillside that was infamous as an illegal dumping site, and unleashed the load down the hill, where it joined other discarded items. Police Chief William J. Obanhein, known as Officer Obie in the song, arrested the pair for littering hoping it would provide a warning to others and serve “as an example to others who are careless about the disposal of rubbish.” Although widely accepted as a protest song, Guthrie later

explained that the song was more or an anti-bureaucracy rant about the arrest and a series of events that followed. So, besides the fact that Alice’s dinner takes place on Thanksgiving, it’s hard to understand the connection with an 18-minute anti whatever song and one of America’s favorite holidays. When Guthrie appeared on WBAI in New York for an interview, the station played the full-length version of the song. After that first airing, the station used the song in a pledge campaign on Thanksgiving and listeners who donated were rewarded with an airing of the song officially titled Alice’s Restaurant Massacree. Guthrie described the song as a series of events that happened surrounding the dinner at Alice’s, and although many considered the song an anti-war anthem, the artist said it was more about anti-idiocy. From those humble beginnings, the song became a Thanksgiving favorite, played in large cities and small communities each year usually at noon as families sit and gather for the holiday. Guthrie and Robbins were convicted of littering and fined, and the story was filed away as an absurd memory of a set of unusual circumstances told in the form of a song until… Guthrie appeared at the Draft Board months later where he was denied admittance to the armed services on the basis of that arrest and his criminal record as a litterbug. As Robbins and Guthrie watched that bundle of trash cascade down the hillside, little did they know the incident would provide Guthrie an exclusion from the draft. I suppose that’s where the antiwar theme of the song is derived. On Thanksgiving Day at noon, I turned on the radio in my car to confirm what I had learned, and, sure enough, the song was playing on several stations. And now, I too am convinced that Alice’s Restaurant has essentially become the Thanksgiving Song, which leads to another question to be pondered. While we have songs for almost every holiday, there weren’t really any songs that I associated with Thanksgiving…. until now.

explained the criteria for the agency’s consideration at a public hearing held at the county’s Administration Building and live streamed to the public. In order for a through truck restriction to be issued, an alternate route must be provided in the application. VDOT compares length of time required and distance with existing conditions. Secondly, it must be determined that through trucks are not compatible with the nature of these roads. Those two criteria must be met in order to gain approval, and one of the two remaining criteria must also be satisfied.

The road in question must be determined to be residential in nature and/or classified as a collector or local road. Regarding Ashcake Road, Frazier said initial studies found the application did meet three of the four criteria, prompting staff to recommend approval of the application. All four criteria were met in reference to Atlee and Atlee Station roads, so that request is also recommended for approval. But, only one of the required criteria was met regarding a request to restrict truck traffic on New Ashcake Road and none were satisfied in the Peaks Road application. Ashland Supervisor Faye Prichard commented on the recommendations as the public comment period began. “I want you to know that when the Wegmans project was initially approved…. the very first thing we did was ask for this through truck restriction,” Prichard said. “We asked for it on all five of these road parcels. All five are in one of our districts,”

she added, describing her efforts and those of Chickahominy District Supervisor Andrea Kelly-Wiecek, who both voted against the Wegmans approval. The county submitted initial applications for the truck restrictions in June 2020 and added Atlee Road to the list in

January of this year. Prichard acknowledged that the VDOT examination of the criteria contained technical elements that often don’t reflect the affect of the quality of life issue on citizens and urged those attending the public hearing to express those concerns. “VDOT has looked at these road sections according to their technical specifications, and now it’s our job to let them know the effect it has on the

Prichard noted the five subdivisions, two churches and an elementary school located on the New Ashcake Road designation, and other speakers voiced similar concerns. “I agree with the previous speakers who said the no truck restrictions should be also applied on New Ashcake and Peaks roads,” said Kevin Damian, a resident of the

Foxhead subdivision. “And to go a step further, I think there should be no trucks on any of these five roads.” Several speakers addressed the concerns of the Brown Grove Community and the impact the impending Wegmans project will have on that historic neighborhood. “Please hear our voices,” Brown Grove former resident Diane Smith-Drake said as she noted the historical significance of the neighborhood founded by freed black people more than 150 years ago. The Rev. Kenneth Spurlock of Brown Grove Baptist Church applauded the recommendation to restrict traffic on Ashcake Road. “It has been proposed that Ashcake become restricted from Sliding Hill Road to Lewistown Road. Our recommendation is that this proposal actually becomes reality,” he said. “This is a narrow road with no shoulders…. and this is the same road that has constant flooding.” Spurlock cited the number of accidents that occur annually in front of the church, and said an employee entrance planned for the Wegmans project will increase traffic on the narrow road. Frazier said comments will be accepted through Dec. 16 and concerned citizens can email comments to Phillip.frazer@vdot.virginia.gov. “We will take that recommendation and the public input and we will package that all together, and we will route that to our executive leadership,” Frazier said. “Ultimately, the VDOT commissioner has final authority to approve or deny any through truck restriction on a secondary system road.” The through truck restrictions apply to tractor trailers, dump trucks and tankers. Fire trucks and trucks classified as destination vehicles – those making a delivery to an address on the identified stretch of road – are excluded from the regulations.

munity that cares about the less fortunate. “The community spirit of Hanover County is so very strong for this program. The Christmas Mother Board is dedicated to making sure every family they learn needs some help, receives something. Many organizations invite the Hanover Christmas Mother to speak at their November or December meeting every year. I have seen and felt their love for helping the less fortunate in the county,” she said. The experience of meeting various groups and sharing the story of Hanover’s Chiristmas Mother has also left a lasting impression. “I have also met with groups in retirement communities, youth groups and other organizations that may or may not be in a position to actually donate but are anxious to know what the Hanover Christmas Mother program is doing this year,” Hummel said. “One group that really touched me was the Aktion Club, a service club for adults with disabilities, sponsored by the County’s Parks and Recreation Department. The attending members were so excited to meet me, and they were working on a craft related to Veteran’s Day, which was later in that week.” Hummel said this year’s campaign was affected by the pandemic and the canned food and toys usually collected are replaced with gift cards, but the spirit of the campaign remains the same. “Due to the pandemic and not being able to collect food and toys, my public relations role as the Hanover Christmas Mother has been particularly important. his family's store and extended family's farms developing a strong work ethic which he carried throughout his life. He was a deeply patriotic man who loved his country and chose to serve in the United States Army straight out of high school at the end of World War II, entering as a private and leaving as a staff sergeant after being stationed in Korea. After his time in the military, Frank entered Virginia Polytechnic Institute and received a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering. Upon completing college, Frank was employed by then VEPCo, now Dominion Virginia Power, first in their forestry department in Richmond, where he met and married his wife, Jo Ann. Frank was an avid sportsman, loving to deer and turkey hunt, as well as fish. Being outdoors in the woods was his favorite place to be, often accompanied by his beagles. In his later years, he just enjoyed sitting on his back porch swing looking out at the now massive evergreen trees that he had planted when he first moved to Harrisonburg. Here he could watch birds, squirrels and rabbits in the quiet of his backyard as he swung back and forth with a gentle rhythm. There will be a celebration of Frank's life for family and friends at a future date. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wreaths Across America in honor of our veterans or to Boys Town. Online condolences may be registered at virginiacreamate. com.

He loved seeing them happy and was nicknamed “Ten Pack Man” by the local children because of the large 10-packs of candy he gave each child at Halloween. In his younger years, he played football, basketball, ping-pong and pool with his kids and their friends. He was good at all of those things and beating him was quite the challenge. Will was born with a sense of humor and a kind spirit. He had the ability to make a rock laugh. He was always lighthearted, quick witted and told the best stories. His facial expressions were priceless. He kept the family laughing and when he laughed, too, he laughed with his whole body. People loved him wherever he went; he never met a stranger. You always knew you were welcome in his home. Will was a dedicated family man; everything he did revolved around his family. He was an honest and proud man who loved the Lord and truly lived his best life. The memories of him will be treasured by his family and friends. A man so loved and a man so blessed. A special thanks to neighbor, Kathy Berry for all the newspaper deliveries and dog walks; to MRMC ER nurse Lauren, who was so kind and compassionate when it was needed most. opinions in the community that confirm their own limited view. A sizable and motivated group of concerned Hanover citizens who care about the equitable treatment of transgender students have organized to communicate their concern to the school board. We have collected over 200 signatures from registered voters in Hanover County from all magisterial districts. This week over 500 postcards denouncing the school board’s recent vote will be arriving at the desks of Hanover County’s school board members, widely representing constituents from all seven magisterial districts. When my son came out as transgender in his school years ago, as confused as we were as parents, our Hanover County community rallied behind our son and us with support. Neighbors, friends, and even school personnel offered their support. We lost only one friend during that time. That’s the Hanover County I believe in. I believe that MOST voting citizens of Hanover, when they personally know a transgender child, would support that child and would support policies that make their days at school positive. Finally, Hanover citizens and school board members cannot accurately say that they want to “protect all kids” when they don’t acknowledge that trans kids are the most vulnerable kids. And certainly not

able to spend a great deal of time together as we attend meetings and group events, probably more than we might have otherwise,” he said. When the campaign ends, Jeannie and Tom plan to return to a life that focuses on family, faith and community. The couple is involved in a number of charitable efforts that take place in Hanover. “We are very active with

several groups at our church, which is very mission and community service oriented,” Jeannie said. “We are also very active with the American Legion and Auxiliary in Mechanicsville (Post 175) and are volunteers with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. We enjoy these projects very much.” They are also anxious to return to another important

element in their lives — family. “We are a blended family, with 10 grandchildren (ages 2 months to 20 years) and very much enjoy family gatherings – large and small. We also enjoy traveling and frequently visit the Yellowstone National Park area (any season) as well as exploring new places,” Jeannie said. As the couple prepared for two parades this week-

“The easiest way to subdue a people is to remove its sense of identity through erasing it’s history and culture.” This year’s Mechanicsville Christmas Parade was conspicuously missing some long-time participants. It seems the leadership of the Mechanicsville Rotary Club has decided to support the socialist woke agenda of attempting to erase this community’s sense of identity. Earlier this year, it was announced that there would be no displays of “Confederate

It appears life as we once knew it has experi-

Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office special Thanksgiving delivery HANOVER – Hanover deputies gathered at the Rutland Kroger on Nov. 24 and loaded 13 Thanksgiving dinners into their patrol cars. These dinners will be distributed to seniors throughout Hanover County. The seniors that will receive these dinners are part of the TRIAD-sponsored program called Adopt-A-Senior. he Hanover Concert Band is proud to be back in front of a live audience for this holiday season and is looking ahead to continue even stronger in 2022. The band is bringing back its Christmas concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at The Hanover Arts and Activities Center, 500 South Center Street in Ashland. Since all 38 of the musicians cannot fit on the stage, a small group of flutes and one of saxophones will be there to provide the music.

There is no admission charge, but donations are always appreciated. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the band had to skip a year, but once again the joyous sounds of the season will be a part of Ashland's "Light up the Tracks" events. In the midst of the restrictions caused by the pandemic, members tried for some time to get back into rehearsal and finally succeeded when they began practicing together again in July 2021. “It feels great to gather and play music again,” said Marshall Johnson, a founding member and trombone player. Cavaliers head to Class 2 football final By Weldon Bradshaw for the Times-Dispatch WOODSTOCK — Bigger than football. King William’s 38-29 victory over Central of Woodstock Saturday in the Virginia High School League Class 2 semifinals was, as the 39 guys on the Cavaliers’ roster will tell you, far bigger than simply a game. “We’re family,” said senior quarterback Jayveon Robinson as late-afternoon shadows descended upon the Falcons’ home field. “We hang out together outside of football. Those are our boys.” On this idyllic, breezy, high-50s day in Shenandoah County, coach Scott Moore’s guys needed all the togetherness they could muster to fend off the highly motivated, relentless home team. “We’ve all been doing this since we were little,” said Demond Claiborne, the Cavaliers’ running back nonpareil. “We can look at each other in the eye. I love these boys to death.” Claiborne, the Tidewater District offensive player of the year, rushed 21 times for 313 yards and four touchdowns. Twice, he chased down Central ball carriers and denied them touchdowns. Several times, he broke up deep passes that, if completed, could have had dire consequences for the Cavaliers. And after the Falcons’ Isaiah Dyer scored on a 1-yard run and Luciano Retrosi kicked the point-after to cut the Cavaliers’

It seemed just a matter of time before the Cavaliers would blow the game open, but Central refused to capitulate and evened the score before Claiborne’s third TD at 2:40 of the second quarter sent them into the break with a 22-16 lead. “We just had to lock in, get mentally focused and see what type of formation they were in,” said senior linebacker Aiden Schools. “They got yards on us by good passing routes. Other than that, I think we locked down everything to the middle.” Central quarterback Ashton Baker completed 15 of 23 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, both to his prime receiver Caleb Daugherty (9 catches, 147 yards). “When they kept coming back with those long pass plays,” Schools said, “I got a little worried, but I knew our team would come together and we’d pull it off.” Claiborne’s fourth TD, the final play of a 98-yard drive that began with Schools recovering a Central fumble in the red zone, and Robinson’s pointsafter sent KW ahead 30-16 at 5:54 of the third quarter. Hanover girls, Atlee boys off to good start By Rob Witham for The Local MIDLOTHIAN — So far, so good. With just two seniors on the roster, and one of them unavailable, Hanover’s girls basketball team completed the first week of the 2021-22 regular season unbeaten, ending with a 58-37 victory over Meadowbrook at the 2021 Edgar T. Rawles Memorial Invitational Saturday afternoon at Monacan High School. Despite a slow start offensively, and dealing with the absence of Campbell Doughty, the Hawks surged ahead in the closing minutes of the first half to turn a tie game into an 11-point lead and cruised the rest of the way. “We started slow, a little bit tentative, not the way that Hanover plays basketball,” said head coach David Butler. “It seemed to take us half to a full quarter to get warmed up, but once that second quarter began, it was big for us, playing the style we want to play.” Early on, in a set offense, the Hawks were cold, missing several shots early — especially in the paint — as Meadowbrook took a 13-10 a minute into the second period. But once the Hawks were able to change the mode of their possessions to transition play, the points began to flow. Their first lead came when Kayla Ford, the lone senior in action, caught a long pass downcourt for a layup to make it a 20-18 game midway through the second quarter to prompt a Monarch timeout. It didn’t help Meadowbrook’s cause, as Hanover outscored them 14-5 to close the first half with a 34-23 advantage. Jolena Goldkuhle paced the Hawks with eight of her 12 points

in that critical second quarter, while Meredith Atkinson scored five of her 11 points in the frame. Her play on both ends earned praise from Butler.

“Meredith played fantastic today off the bench. She’s more than capable of doing that all the time,” Butler explained. The second half only saw the Hanover lead grow, as

Meadowbrook never found a consistent offensive groove, thanks in large part to a swarming Hawk defense, whose primary assignment, other than preventing baskets, is to create those transitional opportunities. Ford, Hali Harris and Jada Oakcrum each added nine points to a very balanced score sheet for Hanover, who averaged nearly 63 points per game in wins over Courtland, Maggie Walker and Meadowbrook. The return of Doughty this week will only empower the Hawks as they prepare for their first rivalry game of the season

Friday when they host Atlee. “Our calling card is defense. That’s what we pride ourselves on,” Butler said. In opening-week boys basketball action, the Atlee Raiders put rivals and teams in their new region, 4B, on notice that they will be a tough opponent as they won two of three games at the Douglas Freeman Basketball Invitational. On Tuesday in the first round, the Raiders routed J.R. Tucker in the first basketball game played in the Tigers’ new gym, 64-32, and advanced to the semifinals, where they faced

a young but athletic Hopewell squad. The Raiders had an opportunity to win, but Rival Axselle’s 3-point try in the final seconds fell short, and Hopewell survived for a 39-37 defensive triumph. While the Blue Devils fell short in the tourney’s championship game to host Douglas Freeman, the Raiders were, again, impressive, defeating another Class 5 opponent for third place, besting Prince George 63-49. The Raiders took a 12-point lead into halftime, but saw the Royals immediately go to the full court press, cutting the lead in half in less than a minute. Atlee (2-1) responded with a 16-4 run to close out the third period, easily keeping Prince George at bay in the final quarter. Elsewhere, in a pair of battles of Mechanicsville Turnpike, Mechanicsville’s Mustangs soundly defeated King William in girls and boys basketball action Friday night by nearly identical scores. The Mustang girls, boosted by 23 points from Madi Butler, thrashed the visiting Cavaliers 58-23. The Mechanicsville boys, on the road at Central Garage, defeated their King William counterparts 59-22. The Atlee boys will also travel to Hanover on Friday night. When the season schedules originally came out, there were no varsity doubleheaders scheduled for Friday nights. That was changed, however, and the first of six Fridays of county versus county action, and the only Friday in the 2021 portion of the schedule, will come this week as the Raiders and Hawks face off at Hanover while Patrick Henry will travel to Mechanicsville. R-MC near perfect in second half of victory By Rob Witham for The Local ASHLAND — RandolphMacon men’s basketball fans understandably felt concerned Wednesday night during halftime in Crenshaw Gymnasium in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener against Virginia Wesleyan. The Yellow Jackets looked tired the previous Sunday, suffering their first loss since Feb. 22, 2020, 77-76 in overtime at Christopher Newport, costing them the No. 1 slot nationally in Division III. Now, the Marlins had held them to 19 points in a rough first half performance. But a different team emerged from the locker room, as Randolph-Macon shot an astonishing 78.3% from the floor, leaving Virginia Wesleyan flat-footed, taking a 65-53 victory to begin a new winning streak. “We were missing open shots, but they came out with a defense we didn’t expect, so credit to them,” said fifth-year forward David Funderburg, who scored 11 points and added five rebounds and four assists. “We always say we get better as the game goes on.” It was as if the Yellow Jackets erased what happened in the first 20 minutes, starting the second half in attack mode,

nected with Kavontay Hayes to put KW up 38-23 with 2:18 remaining. “We know they’re going to get behind us and tote the rock,” said P.J. Holmes, a 6-foot-6, 347pound two-way lineman, of the contributions of the big guys

gave the Yellow Jackets the lead at 29-28. As the Marlins would draw even again, Josh Talbert, who missed the Christopher Newport game, and Miles Mallory would each hit jumpers to retake the lead. When Anthony drained another trey with 11:56 remaining, the Yellow Jackets went ahead for good at 40-39, the start of a 9-0 run capped by a Mallory basket nearly three minutes later. Loginn Norton’s back-to-back 3-pointers helped extend the lead to 10. A final push from Virginia Wesleyan cut the lead to five on a Corey Pelham triple with 2:06 remaining. Anthony stepped in to finish the job, hitting another 3-pointer, then, as the clock hit the 1:00 mark, driving right on his defender and smoothly laying the ball off the glass for a 63-53 advantage. The Yellow Jackets made their first eight field goal attempts of the second half, while the Marlins missed their first six, staying alive with free throw opportunities. After shooting 8-for-29 in the first half from the floor, RandolphMacon made 18 of their 23 second-half shots. Saturday, in their trip to face Roanoke in a Top 10 Division III showdown, RandolphMacon fared better offensively in the first half, taking a 27-25 lead to intermission. The

Yellow Jackets “only” shot 58% from the floor in the second half as they once again pulled away, taking a 62-50 victory. The Yellow Jackets overcame 21 turnovers to win, only allowing Kasey Draper of Roanoke to score in double digits with 19 points. No other Maroon scored more than seven. Talbert led the way Saturday with 16 points, while Anthony had 14 and Funderburg added 12. The difficult opening to the ODAC schedule felt like another week at the office for these Yellow Jackets, who had already spent three weekends in November playing top quality competition on consecutive days, winning games against three ranked teams. Funderburg took note of how that has assisted this veteran squad to their 8-1 start. “This is the hardest preconference schedule I’ve ever played in, and there’s no other way that I want it,” Funderburg explained. “I want every team we play to win every game, except for the one versus us.” The Yellow Jackets take a break for exams and Christmas, returning to action December 29 and 30 in the Fink’s Jewelers Coaches Tournament at Crenshaw. Central accounted for 445 (299 passing, 146 rushing) and 16 first downs. King William amassed 464 (378 rushing, 86 passing) and 10 first downs.

The Cavaliers face Graham (Bluefield) for the state title at noon Saturday at Salem City Stadium. “When you get these opportunities, you have to make the most of them,” said Moore, a 1986 King William graduate and all-state lineman in his second season coaching at his alma mater. “You can say, ‘Grab the brass

investments in Hanover,” he said. Those efforts are paying dividends, according to Thomas. “We are now starting to see the fruits of our labor, but it also comes with a challenge as we are quickly running out of property that is zoned and competitive for economic development projects. As we move into our next five-year strategic economic development and comprehensive planning efforts, this is an area we will want to prioritize working closely with our board of supervisors and citizens alike.” Hanover supervisors cleared the final obstacles to the project at their November meeting, approving two planning requests to facilitate the construction. Cardinal Commerce Center developer Scannell Properties requested a rezoning that would allow a truck maintenance facility on the site, and also requested a special exception allowing a taller fence than code allowed on the area of the property that fronts Route 1. The proposed maintenance and fuel facility will serve the Performance Food fleet and will not accept public repairs. All trucks associated with the operation will utilize the entrance off Route 1 to access the property.

Flaggers, have passed out small Confederate stick flags to those along the parade route. Another SCV participant was the Capt. Willian Latane Camp. Along the route, this camp would occasionally pause and fire a riffle volley. As recently as 2018, the Hanover Dragoons Camp was named ‘Best Non-commercial Float’. I have personally participated in the Brig. Gen. W. C. Wickham Camp color guard for over 10 years. As my camp is generally the last SCV entry in the parade, I have made some observations over the years.

“The developer intends to develop a distribution center on the property, which is allowed by right under the approved zoning,” Maloney said. “The proposed maintenance facility will serve the distributor’s fleet. It’s not going to serve third-party vehicles,” he added. The proposed maintenance facility would be comprised of three working maintenance bays and one wash bay. Maloney said the proposed maintenance facility will have no visual impact on the completed project. Vice Chair Angela Kelly-Wiecek questioned the future of the maintenance facility should the property change ownership at some point in the future. Maloney assured her the facility could not operate as maintenance of fueling facility open to the public. The applicant’s second request involves fencing that will surround the property and its height. “The distributor is also requesting that the property be enclosed with security fencing,” Maloney said. A special exemption is required when requesting fencing more than 4 feet in height. Brendon Keane, an attorney representing Scannel Properties, said, “I thank Mr. Maloney for the collaborative nature in which we have worked through the issues on this project,” Keene said. “Particularly, it’s easy to identify problems but prob-

Confederate flags have been joyfully waved by both children and adults alike. After a Latane volley is heard, the roars from onlookers always immediately follow. Clearly, by awarding the Dragoons with ‘Best Float’, the parade’s judges have also enjoyed the SCV entries. In my participation in the parade, I have NEVER heard a jeer or negative comment. Quite the opposite, we have always been received with cheers and shouts of affirmation. Since the founding of our country, Hanover County has long been a bastion of conservative values, proud of its past. This has been evidenced by the community’s (not the School Board’s) overwhelm-

lem solving is really important and we appreciate Mr. Maloney’s attitude toward problem solving,” he added before asking for approval of both the proffer amendment and the special exception. Rick Albee is a Chickahominy Falls resident and has been active throughout the planning stages for the Cardinal Commerce Center. He spoke in favor of the proposed project at the public hearing. “My neighborhood is located directly across Cedar Lane from the Cardinal Commerce Center, and I can see the roof line of the first building from my driveway,” Albee said. “I’m here in support of both the proffer amendment and the special exception permit requested by Scannel Properties as they relate to the Cardinal Commerce Center.” “I believe the two requests will have negligible detrimental impact on our community and will appropriately serve the needs of the proposed tenant for the next phase of this development,” Albee added. He referenced support for the project among his neighbors. “Through numerous conversations I have had with quite a few neighbors in recent months, I’m unaware of any lingering opposition to the request,” he said. “Scannel Properties and Performance Food Group have reasonably addressed concerns raised about the proffer amendment. So

ing objection to the schools’ name changes and its rebuke of the push to include CRT, mask mandates, and those identifying as transgender to enter the wrong bath/locker rooms in the county’s schools. You have organizations who have, for decades, displayed Confederate images much to the delight of parade goers. The questions for the ‘leadership’ of the Mechanicsville Rotary are: How can you justify this decision? Why would you shun the much-anticipated involvement of Confederate heritage organizations to support the woke agenda? Do you really think organizations from outside of this community pushing this socialism, like

far, it appears they are willing to go above and beyond the bare minimum requirements established for the facility by this board. “I’m confident that PFG is sensitive to the interest of our community and Hanover County, and I believe we will all benefit by having this prominent Richmond area-based company as a neighbor and an anchor tenant of the Cardinal Commerce Center.” Albee also acknowledged the efforts of planning staff and board members in reaching a workable agreement among neighbors and the developer. “Finally, I would like to thank Ms. Dibble for her ongoing involvement in the Cardinal Commerce Center project and especially her continued interest in those of us who live along Cedar Lane here in Hanover,” Albee concluded. The proposed center endured a long approval process that involved the Chickahominy Falls community and other residents who live along Cedar Lane who initially opposed the project due to traffic and lifestyle impacts. Dibble was instrumental in bringing the two sides together and modifying the plan to make it more palatable to the neighbors. “I’m very very pleased tonight that this case comes before us with a recommendation for approval from both the planning commission and

BLM and Antifa, are going to support you financially? Good luck with the latter! I can tell you, with a degree of certainty, that I know of one local business who will no longer contribute to the Rotary as long as it continues to hold a Marxist position contrary to that of the community it purports to be a leader of. I hope others in this community will take due notice of this decision. I look forward to a response. Andrew Bennett Morehead Commander, Brig. Gen. W. C. Wickham Camp 2250 Sons of Confederate Veterans Old Church

the planning office,” Dibble said. “We also have support for this project from our community.” Dibble also noted the collaborative nature of the project’s history. “This has not happened by accident. I want to thank the developer Scannell Properties as well as Performance Food Group…. for your willingness to work with Hanover County to bring an $80 million capital investment project that reflects good planning practices and good neighbor initiatives.” Dibble said Scannel and PFG not only held community meetings but listened “to the concerns of their neighbors and addressed those concerns through good design and proffers.” For example, she noted the requirement that all truck traffic enter and exit via the Route 1 access point, eliminating those vehicles on Cedar Lane. Dibble also referenced the extended buffering along Cedar Lane. “All of these parties came together respectfully and professionally to get this project to this point and I sincerely want to thank all of you — our community members, our neighbors…. and we really do appreciate all of your efforts to reach these compromises,” Dibble concluded prior to motioning for approval of the proffer amendment and the special exception.
