Judges selected the following volunteers for a 2022 “Spirit of Volunteerism” award: Memorial Regional Medical Center received the “Commitment to Community Award,” established to honor a Hanover business that exemplifies strong community values and a sustained commitment to supporting the community. Hanover’s only full-service hospital, MRMC was recognized for exceptional service during the pandemic and particularly its Hanover Crisis Intervention Center. This center is a partnership between Bon Secours Mercy Health, the Hanover Community Services Board and the Sheriff ’s Office to serve those experiencing a mental health crisis. The Hanover Chamber of Commerce, sponsor of this award category, will make a financial contribution to Hanover Crisis Intervention Center. William Berkley “Berk” Jones received the “Spirit of Dedication” award, given to a volunteer aged 60 or over. He is a lifetime member of the Ashland Volunteer Rescue Squad and at age 75, is still one of the most active volunteers who gives more than 60 hours of service monthly. He serves as a member of the board of directors and as the organization’s chaplain. As a paramedic, he provides critical advanced life support services to patients, and is a trainer in first aid and CPR, instructing classes to hundreds of students in the community. The category’s sponsor, Covenant Woods, will make a donation to the Ashland VRS. David and July Fuller received the “Spirit of Family” award. David is retired from a career that highlighted Virginia and Hanover County. He was a member of economic development groups and served on boards in Hanover County Public Schools. Hanover Golf Club undergoes revamping with new ownership By Christina Amano Dolan Editor The Hanover Golf Club recently came under new ownership with exciting plans already underway to transform the country club. New owners Dale Foley, Nick Foley and Ben Foley along with childhood friend Jake Albritton officially closed on the property on April 1. The club remains up and running with the help of the retained management team led by Mike Hatch and Acumen Golf. The Foley family currently works at Foley Material Handling in Ashland, which was founded in the mid-1970s by Dale Foley and serves as a material handling equipment supplier. Albritton is a local realtor and founder of

Albritton Real Estate Group. Together, the team offers their individual expertise in transforming and efficiently running the club. “With ongoing improvements planned for the course this summer and additional upgrades to the clubhouse and grounds scheduled for the fall season, we are hopeful the club will be a preferred venue for many local golfers,” Nick said. In addition, the team aims to transform the club into a more family-friendly venue for people of all ages to enjoy and give the club a “facelift” with a more modern touch, said Sarah Foley, Nick’s wife. They are currently in the process of renovating the clubhouse and recently repainted the banquet rooms with other renovations underwayy

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor

The pandemic has affected everyone, including shelter animals By Christina Amano Dolan Editor News and social media accounts about how life changed for many people during the COVID19 pandemic abounded. More people stuck at home were getting outdoors, planting gardens and adopting pets from animal shelters, we were told. The one that always caused some warm fuzzies for me was the idea of so many rescue animals finding new homes. Demand for animal adoptions due to more people being forced to stay home went soaring across the country in 2020, which was probably a big factor in Time Magazine naming rescue animals as its 2020 Pet of the Year. But have any spikes we saw carried into today as the world has returned to more of a sense of normalcy? The boom in the initial stages of lock-

down seemed to make perfect sense – being isolated to one’s home and in need of companionship would prompt many to search for a furry companion. But what has become of shelter animals today, when we are beginning to see a resurgence of the busyness that can dominate life? According to a Forbes article on this very phenomenon, researchers have predicted that 25% of all jobs in North America will be remote by the end of the year. Would more Americans working remotely from home, either by choice or because of a shift in the corporate culture, still leave open the door for a steady number of animals finding new homes? Before looking into the issue, my hope was that may be the case. Unfortunately, according to national reports and news stories, many shelters are actually experiencing overcrowding.

Jack and Emma’s graduation marks my final appearance at one of my four children’s high school graduations, and I suppose that singular aspect of this year’s celebration also evokes a sense of sadness that forces me to reflect on the past years and the joys and tears that accompanied them. Good things do come in small packages and Jack and Emma are living proof of the validity of that old say-

ing. They arrived early and were much too little to make the trip home, and spent the first weeks of their lives in the NICU at St. Mary’s. Even in those early first hours, they peered through their incubators seemingly searching for the other. Since then, my family has been fortunate to witness the true magic associated with twins, a sort of mystical connection that allows them to communicate without words. Their

According to a study conducted by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), more than 23 million American households, or nearly one in five, adopted a pet during the pandemic. Today, as more pet owners return to work, many doggy day cares and boarding centers are reporting monthslong waiting lists, according to a Washington Post article. Other reports have shown that there are even higher rates of relinquishing pets in shelters, as pet owners no longer have the capacity to support and care for their pets or suffer from life changes spurred on by the pandemic. Several other reports seem to debunk this theory, including a 2021 NPR interview with Dr. Elizabeth Berliner of Cornell University. Berliner said the problem of over-

connection is almost telepathic, and they share emotions and love in a way that singular siblings don’t experience. When Jack was diagnosed with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy, all of his siblings reacted with a sense of determination and tenacity and a commitment to assist him every step of the way. Both of his sisters were never too busy to slow down and assist Jack in normal tasks that became more difficult for him as years passed. Parent wants to protect ‘the kids beneath the politics’ Dear Editor, Who gets the final say over whether kindergartners receive LGBT lessons and whether transgenderism advocacy should be incorporated into everyday school life? Those are the kind of questions rocking a lot of public schools nationwide—including my own school district in Hanover County, Virginia. Beneath all the headlines and political debates, though, there’s a lot of us everyday parents and kids who feel lost in the shuffle and who fear that too many people are forgetting that these controversial policies actually do hit us right where we live. Take my oldest daughter for instance: For the first time, she’ll be entering a public high school—my alma mater in the Hanover area—with a history of more than 10 years in a poverty-stricken orphanage in a developing country. We were overjoyed when, through an adoption process, we became her forever family. We’re so proud of how she has overcome countless obstacles after arriving in America with almost no knowledge of English, no formal schooling and no prior understanding of family life and culture in our nation. She’s already lived through plenty of trauma, and we are working hard to minimize further unnecessary, or premature, pain and stress. That’s why, as we prepare to launch her into her freshman year at the local high school, I can’t help thinking about, among other things, her safety and her privacy rights in multi-use areas like bathrooms, locker rooms or overnight sleeping quarters on field trips. And that’s why, when as a mom I speak about protecting children’s hearts, minds and bodies at the school see LETTERS pg. 8

WALKOUTS Continued from pg. 1

with teaching or the orderly conduct of school activities is not allowed. Participation, including leaving class, the student’s assigned location or campus, during school hours will be subject to disciplinary action.” Chickahominy representative Bob Hundley asked if the new guidelines adhere to legal requirements with specific emphasis on the Tinker case and its possible implications regarding Hanover’s proposed revision. That 1966 case established that “school officials cannot censor student expression unless they can reasonably predict that the expression will create a substantial disruption or material interference in school activities or invade the rights of others.” “We heard several comments tonight in regard to Tinker and our language relative to Tinker,” Hundley said, referencing comments by several speakers during the public comment period of the meeting. “Is it fair to say that we feel very comfortable with the language that we have in our current code as well as our proposed changes that we are completely within line of the Tinker case?” Hundley questioned. Several speakers expressed opposition to the new wording during a public comment period held earlier in the meeting. Many addressed the lack of a comprehensive transgender policy that allows students to use the bathroom to which they identify and linked the code revisions to further targeting trans students and their supporters. Maltby said the new rule is in compliance and is not intended to restrict speech or expression but designed to address specific conduct. He noted that students are not allowed to leave instruction under the current Code of Conduct policy that was designed according to state guidelines. School board attorney Lisa Seward agreed the policy does not restrict expression but addresses conduct. The revisions could be prompted by three student walkouts on three Hanover campuses this school year. “What exists now is a climate where we have walkouts and protests,” Maltby said. “We’ve had multiple walkouts and demonstrations this year. Some were on campus. Some were organized in conjunction and discussions with administration ahead of time, and some happened off campus.” In September, Patrick Henry students walked out and refused to re-enter when prompted, actions that resulted in multiple suspensions. In March, a group of Atlee students left class and participated in a rally protesting the lack of policy regarding transgender and non

binary students. Again, numerous suspensions were issued to students who left class and participated. A similarly motivated rally at Mechanicsville involved students but was held off school grounds and after hours. Maltby made it clear that leaving class and school property during instruction hours is not permitted. “The inclusion of this language is intended to clarify our existing code, which outlines our longstanding expectations… that students are expected to report to and stay in their designated supervised areas during instructional time,” Maltby said “In other words, students can’t simply come and go as they please, which has never been the case,” Maltby added. He noted the school’s legal responsibility to provide a safe and secure environment at all times. “We are legally responsible for our students at all times when they are in our care, and we take their safety and well-being seriously,” Maltby said. The revisions represent more of a clarification than a significant change in policy, according to Maltby, who made clear the current code of conduct addresses walkouts but does not include specific language addressing protests and demonstrations. “The proposed edit simply clarifies the definitions of longstanding practices to more precisely communicate our expectations,” he said. The board could take action on the proposed changes at its June meeting. In other matters, assistant superintendent for instructional leadership Jennifer Greif said the county’s efforts to gather public feedback regarding a possible pre-Labor Day start for the 2023-2024 school year has yielded about 800 responses. Those figures represent an increase to the 300 replies gathered earlier this year regarding the proposed August start. Most metro Richmond school districts have instituted the earlier start dates for classes. Greif said the responses have added “nuance” but have not indicated clear changes in trends, but promised a more in-depth review of the results at next month’s meeting. Board members announced last month they will consider the calendar option at their June meeting. The board also approved changes to the citizen participation guidelines that require speakers who wish to speak at Citizens Comment time sign up by noon on Tuesday, the day of the meeting. Board members also clarified the board’s ability to move the location of the meeting if overflow crowds are expected.

Lawrence won first place in the Sports Feature Photo category for his photo of a young Lou Baker giving everyone at the pool a “thumbs up” prior to the 8-under 25-yard freestyle in a Greater Richmond Aquatic League meet last July. “Big thumbs up here,” a judge wrote in the results comment section. “Seeing this photo on a front page guarantees I’m going to read this story.” Lawrence additionally placed third in the Slideshow or Gallery category for his collection of photos from the King William High Cavaliers’ championship win in December 2021. His photos featured a series of Cavaliers players jumping and hugging in celebration of their 48-21 victory over Graham High

January. Our school board then sought an independent review from a nationally-known and respected parental-rights legal group, the Alliance Defending Freedom, which will provide that review at no cost to our school district. And for that our board was accused of hiring a “hate group” and targeting kids. But the truth is, the ACLU brought a legal hammer against our board, and now it has launched an intimidation campaign to cancel out any other legal perspective. Why does it think it should be the only one allowed at the table? The bottom line is, the majority of families in Hanover County are thankful for the board’s balanced approach. All — not just a few — tax-paying parents in Hanover County have the right to be represented. We do live in America after all – the home of the free and the brave. And bravery is something we all need a little more of these days—for the sake of the kids hidden beneath the politics. Terra Lawrence mother of four Hanover County

to the school board in June. “When students speak, we listen,” said Staley, who outlined the focus areas they dove into this school year that included student devices and technology, lunch menus, scheduling, flexible learning days, the need for a school counselor or career counselors and reporting bullying behaviors. Due to complications with COVID-19 restrictions, the panel only met with Gill twice this school year. He said he looks forward to a “more robust” schedule as they return to normalcy. Several panel members stood alongside Staley during the meeting to share their experience on the panel and offer suggestions for the upcoming school year. Zane

Abbud of Atlee High School, Suzanne Donaldson of Atlee High School, Christopher DeCambre of Mechanicsville High School and Mia Walker of Patrick Henry High School were in attendance. Abbud thanked Gill, Atlee High School principal John Wheeler and the school board for giving him the opportunity to serve on the panel and for listening to their ideas, suggestions and feedback. He has been serving on the panel since his freshman year. “One thing I would like to share with you tonight is that, given our experience working with so many fabulous people here in this very room, Hanover County truly listens to us as students,” Abbud said. Donaldson, who has been

serving on the panel since sixth grade, shared the positive connections she’s made over the years as a student leader, including her strengthening relationships with Wheeler and her former principal Mark Beckett of Chickahominy Middle School. “It has also been great getting to personally know some of the school board members, but, most importantly, getting to collaborate with students outside of my high school has been a great opportunity,” Donaldson said. Sophomore Walker has served on the panel since her freshman year. She said the advisory panel is a great opportunity to hear firsthand from students what is going

the judge wrote. “Definitely scary!” His third-place win was for a unique, fisheye view of a historic church, which a judge praised for inviting a “longer gaze and reflection.” The pair has secured recognition in a variety of VPA contests over the years, including placing second in last year’s VPA contest Multimedia Report category for their package, “B-17 Flying Fortress visits as reminder of sacrifice.” In addition, Klein placed first in the Sports News Photo category and second in the General News Photo category in 2020. Lawrence has been awarded for both photography and reporting over the years. In 2020, he placed second in the Sports News Photo and Sports Column Writing categories and placed third in the Feature Profile Writing category. In 2019, he won in the Sports News Photo category and placed third in the Combination Picture and Story and Multimedia Report categories. Secondary Student Advisory Panel is comprised of student representatives from each grade level in every compre-

Students are handpicked by their respective principals to serve on the panel on behalf of their peers. The panel currently has 36 students who remain on the panel through graduation. The group usually meets multiple times annually with superintendent Michael Gill and engages with senior staff and central office leaders to determine focus areas. Student responses are shared with principals after each meeting along with a yearly report provided

board meeting, it’s not just a slogan — it’s a reality in our lives. Let’s not forget the reality or the real needs of the children beneath the narratives often pushed by those politicizing these issues. For instance, we all saw the “Don’t Say Gay” headlines used to disparage the recently passed parental rights law in Florida. But nowhere in that law was there any mention of banning the word “gay.” What was in the law was a restriction on adult teachers promoting sexually graphic material to kids as young as kindergarten through the third grade. We hear a lot about protecting kids from bullying—and I agree that’s vital—but should we not be equally concerned about protecting kids from desensitization and exploitation in this hypersexualized culture that victimizes thousands of children a year? Like what’s happening in Florida, we’ve been hearing a lot of emotional accusations right here in Hanover County

about how our school board is hiring “hate groups” and targeting sexual minority students. But once again, all you have to do is look at the facts: The Hanover County School Board (HCSB) voted against rubber stamping a Richmond-based policy in its entirety that, among other things, instructed school officials to deceive or hide key information from parents. Instead, the board adopted segments of the policy to help kids struggling with gender by emphasizing parental involvement. Furthermore, the HCSB already has comprehensive policies prohibiting discrimination and harassment against LGBT students, and our schools have made accommodations for the transgender students in bathrooms on a case-by-case basis in a way that does not create sweeping violations of parental rights and young girls’ privacy. Even so, the ACLU of Virginia filed a lawsuit against our school board to try to force it to adopt more radical measures and followed that up with additional legal threats in

in the Virginia High School League Class 2 state championship game. “Contains some nice moments from the state championship game, with solid overall coverage,” wrote the judge. Klein was awarded third place in the Sports News Photo category for his photo of the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets football team dunking a water cooler onto their head coach, Pedro Arruza, after their defeat of Emory & Henry in the April 3, 2021, ODAC championship game. The judge wrote, “I love this photo, not only for the great clarity of the water, but for the joy on the young man’s face directly behind the coach. Well done!” Klein additionally placed second and third in the Pictorial Photo category. His second-place win was for a photo of scary masks on display outside of the Ashland Library, which were featured as part of the Total Terror Haunted Attraction at the Fourth Friday event in Ashland. “Great angle and image,”

virtual learning in place of inperson instruction. In the current school year, assessments jumped to 295 as of May 1. “The numbers are high, the need for the mental health resources… are obvious,” Maltby said. “They still are a significant part of our kids’ school day.” The report also identified a trend in many students reporting feeling tired, anxious and worried. A majority of the same students reported that they had access to coping skills or a trusted adult to turn to for support. Maltby said he has had the privilege of working closely with the Secondary Student Advisory Panel in identifying the need for mental health resources in schools and highlighted the resources they have allocated to support mental and behavioral health. “The highlight this year is not so much technology resources but what we are doing to assist with mental health and behavior in our schools,” Maltby said. “And I can tell you, we’ve had some amazing successes.”

Resources now available to students include five therapy dogs in schools, new social workers, positive behavior support coaches, elementary counselors, school-based mental health clinicians, ABA Behavior Consultative teachers, new career counselor, a positive behavior support coordinator and a new intervention counselor for substance abuse prevention. When asked what the biggest takeaway was from serving on the panel, Walker said she enjoyed the character-building aspect of it. Donaldson said it helped her come out of her shell and DeCambre said he enjoyed public speaking and having important conversations with adults. Abbud said he enjoyed learning how to make change. “Schools aren’t going to be perfect,” Abbud said. “… So to be kind of in a position to help make that change, see how that change is created and then communicate that back to the people I represent, I think that was probably the biggest take away for me.”

on in schools and highlighted the importance of focusing on student mental health. “I would encourage division leadership to continue to focus on mental health,” Walker said. “… Poor mental health is a leading factor in teen death. This is a serious topic, and we can fix it by making the environment safe and supportive of students.” Gill said the topic of mental health arose in every breakout group during the panel’s last meeting. “This is important to our young people, which we continue to focus,” Gill said. “So I want to thank our students for acknowledging that, talking very candidly about that, which we know will lead to progress.” Chickahominy board representative Bob Hundley suggested that the panel further explore ideas to address bullying in schools and how it coincides with mental health. “Because that’s a situation that’s been happening for as long as there have been students, and I don’t think we’re ever going to be able to tackle it in one single swoop,” Hundley said. “But I think with input from students like yourselves, I think we can make a big dent in it.” Discipline hearing review officer Dr. Brian Maltby reviewed the 2021-2022 Equity Report and further discussed the topic of mental and behavioral health in schools, calling attention to a recent spike in suicide assessments conducted by school counselors. According to the report, 294 assessments were conducted in the 2019-2020 school year, which included data only through March 13, 2020, due to COVID-19 school closures. In the 2020-2021 school year, assessments dropped to 159, which may be partly due to

Colonial Farm Credit announces earnings of $20.7 million for 2021 Contributed Report news@mechocal.com Colonial Farm Credit reported net income of $20.7 million for the year ending Dec. 31, 2021. The agricultural lending cooperative also noted an ending loan volume of $751.1 million, which was a $28.2 million increase on loan volume from 2020. Paul Franklin, president and CEO of Colonial Farm Credit noted, “2021 was a year of continued challenges and unknowns for many people and many industries, including agriculture. Overall, average loan volume was 4.54% higher than 2020. At year-end, non-earning assets were 0.13% percent of total assets, which indicates that overall risk is very manageable. Credit quality remained very sound, and we are well positioned to support our customers.” As a result, the board of directors approved a patronage return of $18.5 million that was distributed in April to members of the agricultural lending cooperative. Kevin Monahan, a Surry County farmer and chairman of the Colonial Farm Credit board of directors, noted, “This is the 24th

consecutive year we have given a patronage refund, and we are pleased to be able to return a significant amount of our profits this year to our customers, especially during these challenging times.” For more than 100 years, Farm Credit has been financing and supporting rural America. “As evidenced by the Farm Credit System’s long history, we have been and will continue to be here in both the good times and the bad. During 2022 we will continue to focus our efforts on serving the credit needs of all eligible customers and assisting customers who have been adversely impacted by farming conditions,” Franklin added. “From food, to fuel, to fiber, rural America matters, and we will always be here to support those who live and work in those communities.” Colonial Farm Credit supports rural communities and agriculture with reliable, consistent credit and financial services. The cooperative has over 5,700 customers and $751 million in loans outstanding, with 13 offices serving eastern Virginia and southern Maryland. Hanover Women’s Club celebrates 100th anniversary By Christina Amano Dolan Editor The Hanover Women’s Club celebrated the club’s 100th anniversary last week, gathering at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Hanover for a potluck-style luncheon, sharing an afternoon mingling and enjoying refreshments to mark the club’s milestone. Originally founded on May 30, 1922, the club has offered a century of fellowship among women in Hanover County from all walks of life. Today, the club has around 26 regular members and 10 associate members, or members who cannot regularly attend meetings due to health issues. Randi Wortham, the club’s current president, said she first joined the club in search friendships and getting to know the area after moving to Hanover County from New York in 1994. She first assumed the role as president from 1998 to 1999 and said she has formed long-lasting friendships from her decades of involvement

R-MC advances to D-III super-regional By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor ASHLAND — RandolphMacon’s softball team should have played in the NCAA Division III tournament in 2020. COVID-19, unfortunately, had other plans. In 2021, the team hoped for an at-large bid to the tournament, but because of a limited regular season schedule — again because of COVID — no such bid was forthcoming. This year, as the Yellow Jackets not only earned an at-large bid but also the right to host a regional. They were determined to make the most of it and, with the help of an opening victory against Farmingdale State and two wins over Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have advanced to the Sweet 16. Randolph-Macon now goes on the road. They will visit Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Connecticut, for the opener of their super-regional. The bestof-three series begins Friday with the start time TBA. All of the teams in the Ashland regional had to battle the weather. Randolph-Macon fared the best. The other three teams, which include Susquehanna, had to postpone their Saturday slate until Sunday because the field was flooded in a downpour early Saturday afternoon. “We’ve been through it before, it was like the [Old Dominion Athletic Conference] tournament,” said

Joel Klein for The Local

Left, Randolph-Macon first baseman Rilee Baughan connects for a two-run double in the fifth inning off of MIT’s Anya Chase in the Yellow Jackets 8-3 win Saturday morning. Baughan also homered in the fourth inning. Above, Susquehanna’s Nicole Plesh finds the one spot of the visitor’s dugout not under water for Saturday’s game against Farmingdale State. The game was postponed.

Randolph-Macon head softball coach Kevin Proffitt. “We really haven’t had too many issues with games, but the ODAC tournament a couple of weekends ago was very similar where we ended up back at the hotel waiting to hear something. … Even Sunday, we didn’t really even know if we were going to play Sunday until about the fifth inning of the game before us.” The top-seeded Yellow

Jackets started off in a tight game against fourth-seed Farmingdale State Friday morning. Rams pitcher Ava Shorr scattered seven RandolphMacon hits in a 2-1 loss to the Yellow Jackets. But the Yellow Jackets made those hits count: Sami Davidson hit a double for one of the two R-MC RBIs. Natalie Robinson knocked in the other Yellow Jacket run. Kayla Davis and Olivia Owens

each hit doubles for RandolphMacon. Yellow Jacket pitcher Gracie Ellis struck out seven Farmingdale batters to earn the win. Randolph-Macon next took the field Saturday morning against MIT, which defeated Susquehanna in the other regional opener Friday. In this game, the Yellow Jacket offense dominated for an 8-3 win. Rilee

Baughan led the way, going 2-of-3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Kayla Davis hit another homer for three RBIs. Davidson and Amanda Lanyan contributed doubles to the win. Again, Ellis was deadly on the mound, striking out seven MIT batters. Only one of the three runs she gave up was earned. MIT survived the los-

ers’ bracket Sunday to earn a rematch with Randolph-Macon in what would be the championship game. This time, the Engineers adjusted and tapped Ellis for nine hits, but still fell in a 3-1 loss. Amanda Lanyon, Naomi Sadler and Natalie Robinson each hit doubles for the Yellow Jackets, with Sadler and Kayla Davis knocking in runs. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

Hawks come back for 4-3 win over Patriots By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE — The last time Hanover’s softball team faced Patrick Henry, the Hawks won by a deceptively lopsided margin, 8-0. Thursday night, the Patriots were determined not to let it look so easy for the Hawks. After taking a 2-0 lead, Patrick Henry gave up a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, yet didn’t fold, eventually falling to the Hawks 4-3. As the two teams gathered after the game, Hanover in its left field, Patrick Henry in the Hawks’ right, the energy and enthusiasm on both sides was evident. Both teams had plenty to be happy about. Hanover head softball coach Tommy Evans appreciated the fact that it was such a tough game. “It was a close one,” he said. “We needed it. We’ve had a lot of lopsided wins this year and that was good. It was good for us to show things we need to work on and what we’re made of. It was character building.” Patrick Henry head coach

Lance Lestourgeon was equally pleased. “It was a fun game. It’s Hanover County softball. It’s what we get when we play each other,” he said. “With us, with three freshmen and three sophomores starting — with a freshman behind the plate and one who pitches pretty good — we’ve come a long way this year. We’re getting better consistently.” Patrick Henry pitcher Isabel Gonzalez got in trouble in the two innings in which the Hawks scored, but she never got rattled, battling back each time to limit the damage. She gave up five hits, two walks and struck out two. Based on the line score, it would seem that Hanover’s pitchers had an easier time with the Patriots. Starter Lillian Parrish struck out four in two innings of work, yielding just two hits and two runs — one in each of the first and second innings. Reliever Julia Cuozzo struck out 11 Patriots over the next five innings. She gave up just three see HAWKS, pg. 17

Huesman, van Alstine combine for no-hitter By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor

Dave Lawrence/ The Local

Above, Hanover pitcher Levi Huesman delivers a strike to a Patrick Henry batter in the Hawks’ 17-1 victory over the visiting Patriots Thursday. Huesman gave up no hits, striking out eight and walking five in four innings of work in a combined no-hitter with reliever Marcus Van Alstine. Right, Hanover’s Darryl Husband (19) bounces a single to the pitcher’s mound to drive in Ryan Cowell (on third base).

MECHANICSVILLE — Juggling high school baseball schedules around weather is never easy, especially when coaches have to manage pitching rotations to ensure that their arms get adequate rest. But Hanover’s coaches juggled it all just right and, with the help of their catcher, Cannon Peebles, managed to keep the Hawk pitchers largely on target and the Hawk offense provided plenty of run support as Hanover walloped Patrick Henry 17 -1 in a game moved up a day Thursday night. Two Hanover pitchers, starter Levi Huesman and reliever Marcus van Alstine, combined for a no-hitter. Hanover head coach Tyler Kane said the outing was especially important for Huesman. “Levi hadn’t pitched in a week or so and we wanted to get him back on the mound — just to get his weekly routing going again,” Kane said. “He gave us everything he had. He did great. He threw a couple pitches, two pitches, for a strike, and just limited damage. “He gave us four (innings) and Marcus came in and closed the door in the fifth.” Huesman struck out eight, giving up no hits. He did struggle at times, giving up five walks — three in the third inning which, along with a hit batter, helped net the Patriots their sole run of the game.

Huesman had no need to worry, however. By that time his Hawks held an 11-1 lead. Pitchers aren’t the ones who call the game. Usually, it’s a coach or the catcher who decides what to throw next — in high school, usually the coach. But Hanover has a not-so-secret weapon in catcher Cannon Peebles, who is entrusted with calling the shots. “I think it takes work ethic, work ethic and awareness are the key. Being aware of the field, controlling the pitchers is a big key for that,” Peebles said. “It’s a grind putting in the work back there. … It’s a grind on the body, it’s a grind with the skills.” Peebles credited Hanover alumnus Andrew Knizner, a catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, with helping him learn how to call a game. “Learning from Andrew Knizner when he’s back home has been a big help for me, focusing on what pitches to call in certain situations, what to establish in the first inning, what to establish in the second inning depending on what the hitters are doing with certain pitches as well,” Peebles said. “It’s all just a next pitch, next pitch type of thing where you call one pitch and that sets up the next one.” Anthony Gabello led the Hawks at the plate, going 2-of3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Charlie Rohr hit a double in his only at-bat and knocked in two runs. Hunter Moore and Ryan Cowell each had a double and an RBI.

a double. Patrick Henry was led by Edie Jennings and Lola Continued from pg. 16 Bradley, both of whom likewise went 2-of-3. Jennings had a home run and an RBI. Bradley hits, a run and no walks. Still, the Hawks escaped had two RBIs. Dave Lawrence can be with just a one-run advantage. Offensively, Brie Michaels reached at dlawrence@mechloled Hanover, going 2-of-3 with cal.com.

Williams, Harris among winners at Glen Allen meet By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor Saturday wasn’t the best day for track, but Hanover County’s four high school track and field teams made the best of it nonetheless. Hanover, Patrick Henry and Mechanicsville could all boast of winners at the Glen Allen Invitational at Glen Allen High School. Atlee rested its big guns but got personal-best performances from a number of its younger athletes as the four teams prepare for the Region 4B outdoor track and field championships next week. Patrick Henry’s boys finished with three winners on

the day. Shamar Williams won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, while Alex Davis won the 800 run. “We actually performed really, really well,” said Patrick Henry head track and field coach Scott Brrown. “We use it as our tune up to going on into regionals and I think a lot of kids took advantage of it. We made some changes over the last two weeks, just trying to gear things up for the final push towards regionals and state. Some kids ran some great times.” Williams won the 100 in 10.88 seconds and the 200 in 21.98. Davis claimed the 800

title in 1:54.75. Logan Nuckols led the Patrick Henry girls with a second-place finish in the 3,200 run. Jessica Osuanah finished third in the shot put. Hanover was led by Deonte Harris, who won the high jump (5-10) and triple jump (40-05). “Deonte had a good day. We’re asking a lot of him and we’re trying to stretch him a little bit,” said Hanover head coach Rich Firth. “We’re going to need him to do well at regionals. He’s an elite athlete and he’s just starting to embrace that.” Hanover’s girls were led by Jaelynn Joiner with a second in the 100 dash and thirds in the

200 and long jump. The Mustang boys won the 4x800 relay. The team of Josh Gray, Carter Smith, Jack Standridge and Chase Maters finished in 8:18.49. Na’Jad Redfurn finished second in the boys high jump. Atlee head coach Neil Mathews had his top guns sit out the Glen Allen Invitational as they focused on training for the Region 4B meet, which the Raiders will host next Tuesday and Wednesday. Nevertheless, he had a number of athletes on the field having an impact with their performances. “We’ve just been racing pretty regularly during the week-

ends and the week,” Mathews said. “We just hadn’t had any time to really go in and work on some things and fix things we want to do and just, you know, get a good, solid, consistent block of training before the region meet. A lot of the kids that ran Saturday were still searching for qualifying times for the region or wanted one last race before their season’s over.” Kennan Martin led the Raider boys with a secondplace finish in the high jump and a third in the triple jump. Greg Durgin finished second in the pole vault, with teammates R.K. Gathje and Will

Rittenhouse tying for fourth. Josie Rempe led the Atlee girls with a third-place finish in the 100 dash. Two of Hanover’s best athletes, Ethan Coleman and Alli Crytser, were competing in the Glenn D. Loucks games in White Plains, New York. Coleman set a pair of school records with a fifth-place finish in the boys 800 run (1:54.56) and the mile run (4:19.45). Crytser finished third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, sixth in the 3,000 run and eighth in the 3,200 run. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

A sudden downpour prior to Saturday’s losers bracket games in the NCAA Division III regional at Randolph-Macon rendered the field unplayable. Both games, between Farmingdale State and Susquehanna, and between the winner of that game and MIT, were postponed until Sunday. Susquehanna defeated Farmingdale State 8-2, but fell to MIT 5-1.

The club meets on the second Wednesday of every month at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and organizes educational programs for members to enjoy. The club’s oldest member, Elizabeth Britton, began previous meetings by sharing a piece of her history, such as her experience living in Richmond during the Spanish flu or showing antiques she has collected throughout her life. Britton is 103 years old and has been a member of the club since 1975. The club invites guest speakers to educate members on a variety of topics. Last month, Melanie Baker,

the volunteer coordinator for the Hanover County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program, offered a presentation on how the program advocates for children in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court process. Volunteers are trained through the program to gather information for the court when making decisions about the needs of abused and neglected children, or other children involved in juvenile dependency cases. The club has also used funds to host authors, programs on floral arrangements and other fun and educational activities. The club will make annual donations using any leftover funds to local organizations, such as Ashland Christian

Many have been members of the club for decades, such as Susie Rice who first joined in 1993, and Betty Moore who has been a member since 1982. Rosalind Snively has been a member for almost 10 years and will soon serve as the next club president in the fall. She first joined from meeting club members as an existing member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. “It’s been fun and the ladies are sweet,” Snively said. “It’s a chance to meet people your age and with your interests, and we have a lot of fun together and learn a lot.”

They are currently averaging about seven to 15 canine adoptions a month and about three to four a month for cats. In addition, many rescue groups they partner with, such

as Richmond SPCA and Richmond Animal League, are also struggling to get animals adopted and are even seeing a spike in adoption returns. With limited space, these groups can no longer help pull animals from the county’s shelter. “Post pandemic, I think a lot of people are going back to work and they just don’t have time for animals like they did back in the pandemic… And there’s nothing they can do about it, and it’s not their fault. They’re doing the best they can,” Hodnett said. He pointed out that a number

of other factors could contribute to low adoption rates and a rise in shelter returns, such as inflation and the economy affecting people’s finances. With the effects of the pandemic hovering over seemingly everywhere, it is important for interested pet owners to consider looking to local animal shelters if they have the means to do so. Now more than ever, shelter animals require the love and support of a family, as they, too, are suffering from the aftermath of the pandemic. Hodnett said those who are considering adoption should make sure

they find the right animal they are compatible with and know that caring for shelter animals requires full-time commitment and care. “Because in most circumstances, the animals that we can come into contact with here at the shelter, we don’t know half their story,” Hodnett said. “But a lot of these animals haven’t had that love and commitment to begin with.” For more information on Hanover County Animal Control and Shelter, visit https://www.hanovercounty. gov/172/Animal-Control.
