CHAMPIONS X 3 By Dave Lawrence Richmond Suburban News

FREDERICKSBURG — Last year, Hanover’s baseball and softball teams reached their respective Virginia High School League Class 4 state championship games. Both suffered heartbreaking losses and had to take comfort in the old sports refrain, “Wait ’til next year!” Atlee’s boys lacrosse team has had to do the same four prior years. But not this year. All three returned to the county Saturday as their respective state champions. For more, go to The Local Sports, page 16.

OPINION | The Local Views From the editor

The importance of honoring heroes among us By Christina Amano Dolan Editor

T

here are those that live among us that serve as everyday heroes. When this everyday hero has fallen, a whole community feels the impact of such a devastating loss, and it is up to the community to enshrine their courage and sacrifice in memory. During the statewide Virginia Fallen Firefighters and EMS Memorial Service held earlier this month, the lives of four fallen heroes were powerfully memorialized and honored: Lawrence Phipps Sr., Lyndell Woods, Sean Land and Todd Landreth – all men who devoted their lives to protecting their communities. Phipps was one of our own – a former battalion chief of Hanover Fire-EMS. Honoring the lives of the four fallen firefighters, the keynote speaker, John Prillaman, shared a moving story that captured what it truly takes to become this hero. He narrated a story of God working overtime to craft his latest creation. An angel appeared and wondered why he was devoting this extra care and time, to which God responded with the special traits that this creation would possess. A firefighter must be able to wake up to a fire alarm, run into burning buildings, rescue people and enter areas that most wouldn’t dare to venture to, he said. He has to be willing to leave his family and put his life on the line, work to exhaustion and beyond, yet still be ready for the

next call. He must have a strong commitment to a personal calling that places their lives in jeopardy every day, must be in an extraordinary physical and mental state at all times and have a heart big enough to love members of the “brotherhood” worldwide. “A heart that big? There’s no way,” Prillaman said the angel replied. God responded that it wasn’t the heart that was the trickiest task but creating the extra hands and eyes a firefighter must possess: one pair to see the whole situation, another pair to see what lies ahead, a third pair to look after his brothers and another pair to look reassuringly at a victim and say, “You’ll be alright.” “Being a firefighter is one of bravery, loyalty and devotion to public service,” Prillaman said. “He is willing to put his life on the line every day to protect our homes and our loved ones from the devastating effects of fire. And sometimes, the honorable job of saving lives requires many firefighters to pay the ultimate price for their valor.” Finally, God placed a tear on his creation for the “bottled up emotions for fallen comrades, for victims and for commitment to that piece of cloth called the American flag.” Prillaman said he loved this story because it paints a picture of what a firefighter is expected to do while capturing the care and compassion a firefighter must possess. He often laughs when he hears people talking about firefighters, he said, as many may assume their lives echo what is seen on television shows

or movies. He said a firehouse is instead full of firefighters sharing stories of their families or their favorite football team. They’re a family, he said, that extends across the country and into every fire station. Adorned with fire apparatus from across the state, the reception hall itself exhibited how the fire and EMS family extends far beyond the bounds of one’s community. It is a family that feels the loss of any of its members and joins hands in powerful remembrance of their service. The room fell silent as a bell was struck during the ceremony for the “Tolling of the Bell” tradition – a symbolic sound that dates back generations ago to an era of telegraphs. Firefighters would broadcast this sounding alarm in honor and respect of a fallen firefighter, echoing from the fire alarm boxes that stood on almost every street corner of America. As the ringing echoed powerfully throughout the hall, carrying listeners back in time to when its melancholy cry was heard down every street corridor, it called for the remembrance of heroes of generations past that paid the ultimate price for their valor. From hearing the stories of these courageous men and witnessing the meaningful ceremony, it is certain that all who hear their stories will fulfill a promise to remember. Their legacy will live on through the heroes that surround us every day – the men and women who wake up every morning, dress for work and leave their homes and families with the honorable commitment to place the lives of others before their own.

LETTERS | Reader Views

Reader responds to Peterson’s letter to the editor Dear Editor, Sadly, you choose not to “hear” all of your constituents, Mr. W. Canova Peterson. You’ve had ample opportunity to speak with many of us and have chosen not to. I also see you neglected to point out that Mrs. Prichard and Mrs. Kelly-Wiecek also opposed your choice. They both had well-stated and valid concerns with Mr. Redd. Perhaps you are not used to change or maybe you are not used to being questioned. Whatever it happens to be, you’ll need to acknowledge that there are growing number of Hanover residents that want to see change and growth in the county. I’ll give Mr. Redd a chance, because I have no choice in my representation on the school board yet. The appointment of John E. Redd to the Hanover County School Board has been in the works for two years now. It is no secret Peterson was unhappy with Sterling Daniel voting in favor of the school’s name change. Sadly, this appointment is retribution for his not voting in a way favorable to Mr. Peterson. It seems he’s forgotten that a school board member is representative not of him and his opinions, but of what is best for the teachers, staff and students of Hanover County Public Schools. Now, I’ve made a bold claim that this appointment was two years in the making, and I’m not one to make statements that can’t be backed up with data. Shortly after the school’s name change vote, Mr. Charles Waddell sent an “open” letter to The Mechanicsville Local in the week of Aug. 12, 2020, offering up Mr. Redd as “a well-qualified citizen whose commitment to serve, experience and expertise make see LETTERS, pg. 22

ing for customers to safely travel between the trains and the station. Trivett expressed an appreciation for the thoughtful aesthetics and design incorporating the history of the station, displaying how the “old and the new blend perfectly together.” According to Todd Stennis, senior manager at Amtrak, they were able to save 30% of the brick from the original platform in the construction project. Stennis gave an overview of Amtrak’s ADA Stations Program, which aims to bring

Amtrak stations into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements to provide the best possible service to passengers with disabilities. “This is one of many projects that we’re working on around the country, and Amtrak spent over $7 million in Ashland, Virginia investing in this project to make these platforms ADA compliant,” Stennis said. Amtrak has spent $58 million in the last fiscal year to complete 162 ADA projects that brought 16 stations into ADA compliance. Another 41 stations are targeted for completion this fiscal year at a fore-

casted investment of $126 million. The program is advancing 120 station designs and 40 station construction projects as part of Amtrak’s ongoing commitment to providing accessibility for all customers, according to an Amtrak release provided by Kimberly Woods, Amtrak public relations manager. According to Stennis, in fiscal year (FY) 2019 alone, Amtrak served over 1.5 million customers in Virginia. Of those 1.5 million, almost 30,000 passengers came and went from Ashland. form project will help. “At the end of the day, your train station is the front door to your community,” Stennis said. “…With that being said, I hope that we have made Ashland’s front door improved to a level that you all certainly enjoy it. It helps grow ridership and it adds value to your community.” Randy Marcus of CSX Transportation and director of state relations for Virginia emphasized the important relationship that CSX has built with the Town of Ashland. “This relationship goes well beyond the tracks just physically running through town,” Marcus said. “Ashland has

embraced the railroad, not just for transportation but a part of the community and its identity and a source of tourism marketing.” He said they will continue to work with local leaders in ensuring safe operations in Ashland. Michael McLaughlin, chief operating officer of VPRA, said they have additional upgrades planned for the station, including the incorporation of a passenger information display system that will notify passengers what time and what side of the tracks their train is coming. He said this project is anticipated to take about two years to complete. Ashland District Supervisor Faye Prichard concluded the ceremony by commenting on

the close-knit community of Ashland. She said all residents of the town are part of a family. “And this right here says we care desperately about our family,” she said. “We care enough about them to take care of them. We care enough about them to make sure that they can safely use every amenity in this town.” “We thank everybody who partnered to do this to make this a safe part of our community as well as an enjoyable part,” she added. Trivett, accompanied by project stakeholders and Town of Ashland staff, cut the ceremonial ribbon in honor of the multi-year platform project’s completion, which was followed by an energetic round of applause.

Contributed Report news@mechocal.com New Hanover Presbyterian continues its inspiring efforts in gathering the Hanover County community to help struggling populations in Ukraine. The church coordinated with the Hanover County community to hold a feast, a day of prayer, a “Yard Sale for Good” and send a Church Lady Brigade to help a bride who couldn’t find a caterer. With these efforts, the church and the community has raised $20,703 for Ukraine support to date. The Ukrainian Feast conducted in April raised over $13,000 with no set plate price. One donor covered all food costs. Several donors donated multiple times after hearing the inspirational speeches from Ukrainian speakers. The feast’s selection and creation of Ukrainian dishes was led by the church’s chef Tracey Sigmon and logistics led by Katrina VanHuss. The Day of Prayer, championed by Dan Douglas, was held in April. The church simply opened its doors for those wishing to pray. Community members donated over $1,300 and lifted Ukraine in prayer the entire day. The Church Lady Brigade was deployed in May to help a bride unable to find a caterer. The Brigade was led by Tracey Sigmon with Stacey Murrell and Katrina VanHuss in fetch-and-carry mode. The bride made a generous donation of $1,000 to support Ukraine. The yard sale, conducted the first Saturday of this month, raised over $5,000. The remaining goods left over from the yard sale went to local ministries serving people experiencing homelessness.

a member of BETA, SCA, SODA 7th Up clubs and part of the Richmond fencing club. She will be attending the University of Tennessee (UT) next year to pursue a major in business analytics. In her essay written to the Scholarship Committee of the

Kiwanis Club, Stone states that “being a part of Key Club has allowed me to truly see the impact a group composed of individuals with similar goals can have on improving the world around them… Our world needs people to recognize the power they can have when they gather up and collaborate.” “I believe that volunteering to serve our communities and the people who make them special is a vital part in the health of this nation,” she stated at the end of her essay. The Kiwanis Club of Ashland extends their congratulations to Stone, is sure she will do well at UT and knows they will hear the name “Madelyn Stone” again.

“We collected approximately $5,000 that will be split between Presbytery Disaster Relief for Ukraine and Re-Establish Richmond,” said yard sale leader and church member Robin Edwards. “But it was more than just the money. The community spirit of so many people filled my heart with love and joy.” “When the day was done, New Hanover Presbyterian Church had helped seven different ministries through money and goods donations,” Edwards added. “The generosity of the treasure hunters was wonderful.” Edwards was appropriately thanked during the church service the next day with an oversized, outdated and unloved brass chandelier of gargantuan proportions. The organizations funded are working directly in Ukraine and with Ukrainian refugees and include World Central Kitchen, Presbyterian Disaster Aid and Re-Establish Richmond. “Our church serves as a coordinating force for good in our neighborhood,” said Robert Johnson, pastor of New Hanover. “We think that is where Christ wants us to stand.”

First graduates of Hanover Fire/EMS paramedic program On June 8, nine young people became the first graduates of the Hanover County Fire/EMS Paramedic Program. Graduating were Timothy Grabham, Kevin Herrity, Robert Insley III, Michael Konvicka, Collin Landrum, Holly Landrum, Jacob Miffleton, Tyler “Jack” Page and Thomas Whitaker, who was the class leader. Herrity was recognized as the class valedictorian and Insley as the honor graduate. These young people completed nine months of training, including over 1,000 hours of training in a classroom setting and over 500 hours of training in a clinic setting. Lucian Mirra was the training supervisor. Mirra said that of the approximately 37,000 Emergency Medical Technicians in Virginia, only about 7,000 are paramedics. Paramedics complete a much more extensive training program and national certification exams to achieve the highest certification level of pre-hospital care provider in the United States.

Miffleton has been assigned to Station 2 (Beaverdam); Colin Landrum, Grabham and Whitaker to Station 3 (Eastern Hanover); Konvicka and Holly Landrum to Station 4 (Doswell); and Herrity, Insley and Page to Station 6 (Henry). Hanover becomes the fifth county in Virginia to have a self-accredited Paramedic Program and is now nationally accredited. The graduates were thanked and congratulated by Jethro H. Piland, Chief of Fire/EMS; and Angela Kelly-Wiecek, Chair of the Board of Supervisors. Piland told them always to keep in mind that when they respond to a call, they will be remembered not only for their technical skills but for how compassionate and kind they were in that moment of stress for loved ones and if they engaged with that family and reduced their level of anxiety. Kelly-Wiecek related that three residents of her neighborhood had been saved by Hanover Fire/EMS and reminded them

when the sky sprinkled occasional rain in the morning, the crowd of festivalgoers continued to grow. Next to longtime vendors, there were a variety of new faces in the string of booths aligning the streets, including R-MC alumna and miniature artist Kara Muller of Little Bit Minis. “There’s a really good

energy here today,” she said, commenting on her joyous first experience at the Faire. She said she will definitely be participating in coming years. Among the new attractions this year included a mobile escape room van provided by RED VEIN Escape. Kitty Barnes said they received “tons of families” eager to try out the five-minute interactive game throughout the day. New visitors raved about

their first experience at the Faire, marveling at the endless amount of activities and easyto-navigate street layout. “I like that it’s so organized and how they section it off by vendor, so you have different areas and different things to see,” said Jessica Garcia, a Hanover resident. “And I like that it’s animal friendly.” The streets were crawling with furry friends throughout the day, with many even

dressed in strawberry-patterned scarves and outfits in the spirit of the Faire. Visitors also voted for their favorite vendors of the day. His and Her Soap Company was voted fan-favorite for arts and crafts, Funcakes won favorite commercial food and Raise, Inc. Coffee won the favorite for non-commercial food. Molly Hudson of The Concert Ballet of Virginia was crowned this year’s youth

“Spirit of the Faire” winner and Betty La Place received the adult recognition. La Place said she was “totally surprised” when they announced her as this year’s winner and was awarded due to her status as the Faire committee’s longest-serving member of over 30 years. “It’s a really fun thing,” she said, commenting on why she has loved attending the Faire over the decades. “I

mean, you can bring a family and not spend any money at all if you don’t have to. The only thing you pay for is what you buy.” Chidsey said they are always looking for new volunteers and board members throughout the year. Ashland Museum presents history of Strawberry Faire By Greg Glassner For The Ashland Museum Many people know the Ashland Strawberry Faire, which celebrated its 40th anniversary June 11, as a colossal street party featuring food, arts and crafts and musical entertainment. Since its very beginning, however, it has meant much more to the local community. This annual event is celebrated by a new special exhibit on the Faire at the Ashland Museum on Hanover Avenue. Many Strawberry Faire board members attended a reception at the museum marking the exhibit opening June 5. In 1981, Ken Gustafson, owner of Ashland Berry Farm, approached Ashland Mayor Dick Gillis and others with the idea of holding a strawberry harvest festival similar to one in Ohio. Those two were joined by Tafi Yourtee, a local thespian and ad rep at the HeraldProgress, John Longmire, Norman Bugge, Linda Alford and others in forming a committee. A scouting party flew to Troy, Ohio in a plane arranged by Frank Hargrove Sr. and came back with the basic concept. In early 1982 a dance at the Randolph-Macon College (R-MC) gym featuring Ron Moody and the Centaurs raised startup funds and the first Strawberry Faire was scheduled in May to coincide with the local strawberry harvest. It was held on the football field at Randolph-Macon College. Committee members and other volunteers brought thousands of strawberries with which to make strawberry shortcake — a staple of all of the Strawberry Faire since. The expressed purpose of that first Strawberry Faire was to

bring the community together, give civic groups and churches a means of raising funds and the means to showcase the talent of local artists, craftsmen and musicians. The original Faire outgrew the football field and moved onto the main campus of the college in 1988. Later it moved onto Henry Street, which was closed to traffic. Little Miss and Mister Strawberry Faire Pageant was also added as was additional entertainment and food vendors. As the proceeds from booth rentals grew, the Strawberry Faire Committee invested in the community by sponsoring annual scholarships for deserving students at all four Hanover County High Schools, the Technical School and at the college. They honored departed members of the early committee, Tafi Yourtee, former Herald Progress owner Jay Pace, Richard Gillis Jr. and Norman Bugge. Over the years many of the originators of the Faire depart-

ed or passed away and were replaced by new waves of organizers including Mary Claire Coster, long-time event chairperson, and Betty La Place, who is also a member of the Ashland Museum Board, plus many enthusiastic volunteers. The current board members are Sharon Chidsey, president; Bob Flanagan, vice president; Dani P. Stockwell, treasurer; Susan Morrison, secretary; and Kevin Damian; Bill Gatewood; Betty La Place; Judith McKinney; Leon Stockwell; Dan DiCandilo and P.J. Edmond. Lorie Foley is a consultant and Ken Gustafsen, one of the founders, is an advisor. Wanda Cornwell represents the Town of Ashland and John Herron represents R-MC. Bill Hamner is legal representative. Village Bank, the Kiwanis Club of Ashland, R-MC and The Mechanicsville Local and Ashland-Hanover Local are sponsors of the Faire, which returned after a two-year lapse due to the pandemic. HAWKS WIN! ... HAWKS WIN! Hanover’s baseball, softball teams cap 2022 seasons with Class 4 state championships

Rob Witham for The Local

Hanover’s baseball and softball teams gathered for a group championship photo after the teams won their respective 2022 VHSL Class 4 championships at Riverbend High School Saturday.

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor FREDERICKSBURG — Last year, Hanover’s baseball and softball teams got within reach of their respective state titles. Both lost in their respective championship games in heartbreakers. Those losses inspired the

16

two teams to leave nothing to chance. They were on a mission to finish what they had started in 2021. When Levi Huesman struck out James Wood’s Brody Brower to cap an 11-0 victory in the Virginia High School League Class 4 state baseball championship game at Riverbend High School, both Hawk teams could

The Mechanicsville Local

June 15, 2022

celebrate a mission accomplished. In 2021, both Hanover teams fell in pitchers’ duels. The Hawk baseball team fell to Broad Run 3-2, while the softball team lost to Amherst 2-0 in eight innings. The players who returned from those seasons knew what they had to do to end up on the winning side.

“It was a long year after last season where we came so close and lost by a run,” said Hanover head baseball coach Tyler Kane. “These guys came out hungry all year. They started working out a week after the season ended. “This team was led by 14 seniors, and as a coaching staff our main goal was to get out

of their way. They knew what they needed to do. They knew all our plays. They knew how to execute. They knew how to play the game fast, at our pace, and they came out all season and they just did it. There were no motivational speeches. There were no trick plays. There was nothing beside those guys just going out and playing the game

as hard as they could.” Hanover’s softball team was not as heavily senior-laden as the baseball team — only four on the roster — yet most of the younger players were veterans of the 2021 campaign. The Hawks had beaten up on their opponents by lopsided margins see HAWKS, pg. 17

Raiders leave nothing to doubt in title win By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor FREDERICKSBURG — It’s been a long time coming. Atlee’s boys lacrosse team had made four previous trips to a Virginia High School League state championship game. Each of those four trips — from 2015-2017 in Class 5A, and 2019 in Class 5 — ended in a one-point loss. The Raiders made their fifth trip to a state championship Saturday, facing off with Dominion-Loudoun County for the VHSL Class 4 state title. This time, they left nothing to chance, crushing the Titans in a 16-4 romp at Massaponax High School to finally claim the championship the Raiders have been so close to claiming for so long. “It feels great,” said Atlee head boys lacrosse coach Fielding Crawford of the win. “Every team in the past has had an opportunity. It has been right there. This particular team obviously seized the opportunity. “I was proud of them, but also proud of those previous teams for setting the culture and setting the expectations for

what it means to be an Atlee lacrosse player.” Crawford said many of those past team members were present Saturday to support their successors. “A lot of them were there on the sidelines with us and were there with the team after,” he said. “They’ll always be part of the program. The team [Saturday], it was important for

them to make their mark, but I’m not sure that happens without those previous teams.” Crawford said that what helped the 2022 team cross the finish line was depth. The Raiders had multiple weapons, giving them an abundance of flexibility and resilience that the previous teams had lacked to some extent. For example, when their

main faceoff specialist, Connor Bade, went down with a dislocated kneecap and torn ACL mid-way through the season, the Raiders had to find a replacement. Several players ably stepped into the breach until a more permanent solution — Jackson Sullivan, who had missed much of the previous two years because of injuries — was found. They also

had to adjust their style of play. “It forced us to look in the mirror and say we’ve got to figure out more ways to be successful than relying upon ‘make it, take it’ lacrosse,” Crawford said. “It was a collective effort, and the guys really bought into it and we figured out how to do that. I think it also calmed us down and, I think, finally what it did was make us value every

they needed to keep their wits together. Hanover faced a tough Tuscarora squad, led by pitcher Lindsey Mullen, who faced 25 Hawk batters, striking out 10. Junior pitcher Julia Cuozzo was in the circle for Hanover, and she had to stay on top of her game as each inning rolled by with the score knotted at 0-0. That changed in the seventh inning. With one out, Hanover’s Reagan Hill reached on an error and advanced to second on a single to center field by Lilly Parrish. After another out,

Cuozzo stepped to the plate and helped herself, doubling to center field to score Hill. It might have scored Parrish, too, but as an errant throw got away from Tuscarora’s catcher, Hill was called for interference after she scored and Parrish was ruled out. Cuozzo then had to defend a one-run lead to get the win. The bottom of the seventh began auspiciously with a groundout. But Audrey Stelle singled and Mary Hackman reached on a fielder’s choice error. much of the year, and for awhile head softball coach Tommy Evans was hoping they would develop the mental toughness to survive intense postseason battles. With the help of some prodding from fellow county teams like Atlee or Patrick Henry, the Hawks seemed to have done just that. rep and every possession.” Atlee has a number of players who can score. “I think, in our E.C. Glass semifinal game, we had nine different scorers,” Crawford said. “This team has ability to score in so many different ways — from transition to settle to, really, just individual effort.” Nevertheless, in the final, the main man was Kevin Miller, who finished with seven goals. “He kind of took the game over, but at the same time, as soon as he starts to garner too much attention, he’s one of the best feeding players I’ve ever seen,” Crawford said. “I think he had four assists.” Crawford also had plenty of praise for his defense. “We gave up the opening goal. Our goaltender kind of got shaded on a screen a little bit. It’s the first minute of the game and they scored a goal and then they didn’t score again until the third quarter,” Crawford said. “[Our defense] is absolutely nasty. If a ball gets on the ground, they’re going to pick it up and turn it into offense on the other end of the field.” Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

Zorb fielder’s choice. Cuozzo wasn’t rattled. She focused on throwing strikes and got Katherine Scheivert to ground out to Hawk third baseman Bri Michaels to end the game. “I just had to make sure I stayed calm for my team,” Cuozzo said of the seventh inning drama. “I just thought the same thing, just going at the batters, just keeping it to ground balls, and everything would be fine.”

Atlee girls soccer coach ends career in state semis By Zach Joachim Richmond Times-Dispatch FREDERICKSBURG — Since Atlee High opened in 1991, Bruce Lovelace has been synonymous with Raiders athletics. The retiring girls soccer coach who has led multiple Atlee programs coached his final game Friday after more than three decades at the school, as the Raiders girls soccer team, playing in its first state semifinal in program history, fell to Broad Run (Ashburn) and senior George Mason recruit Mia Casciani 3-0 at Chancellor

HAWKS Continued from pg. 17

Cuozzo’s coach, Evans, was glad he made sure to take his blood pressure medication that morning. He needed it. “It was a pitchers’ duel the whole way through,” Evans said. “It was a lot of good defense on both sides. … We were just pecking away, pecking away a little bit at a time, and we finally scratched one out right there at the end.” Hanover’s baseball team had its tough moments in its semifinal against Jefferson Forest Friday. Starting pitcher Seth Keller struggled at times, hitting five batters and walking three — yet still finished with 12 strikeouts in five innings of work — and the Hawks had no breathing space until Cannon Peebles hit a grand slam in the third inning. They eventually won 13-3 — Kane referred to it as “the closest 10-run game, it seemed like, ever.” Hanover made sure it was nowhere near close in the championship game against the Colonels, jumping out to a 5-0

18

High in Fredericksburg. “This was a fun run for him,” Raiders AD Ryan Molloy said of Lovelace’s final season. The Raiders had been to quarterfinals before, Lovelace said, but never to the state’s Final Four. “This has been an amazing year,” Lovelace said, looking around at his players as his team packed their bags, cheered on by the 50-plus traveling, blue-clad supporters. “It’s kind of bittersweet it had to end, but we played a quality team, I love my girls, I couldn’t think of a better group to end it with.”

The Raiders (16-6-1) are built around a senior-laden back line and young, explosive group of forwards. Lovelace said many of his defenders hadn’t played at the back prior to this season, and lauded their growth in new roles. That group includes Audrey Skelton, Anabel Shifflett and Kathleen Miller, vocal communicators and leaders Friday in the face of a stifling Broad Run press. Of Atlee’s underclassmen attacking threats, Lovelace said the Raiders’ future looks bright. Sophomores Brooke Matthews, Brooke Davidson and Georgia

Skelton showed class and creativity on a number of occasions Friday with savvy turns and deft touches to open up the Spartans defense on breakaways. Matthews and Davidson both scored in a 2-0 region final victory over Mechanicsville. But Broad Run (16-7) controlled much of the match with an aggressive press up top and physical play in the back, never giving the Raiders much time to operate on the ball. Casciani scored a brace with a pair of lofted shots that found their way over a backpedaling Raiders keeper and into the

net to lead the Spartans into Saturday’s Class 4 final against Tuscarora (Leesburg) Saturday at 12:30 at Chancellor. Fellow senior midfielder Taylor Reyes scored the final goal on a rocket into the far-left corner from a tough angle with a few minutes to play. “Every time Mia has it at her feet I’m sitting right back just looking, I feel it every single time,” Reyes said of Casciani, a strikingly creative midfielder and captain who was selected to participate in the 2021 Elite Clubs National League National Playoff Showcase and Washington Spirit advanced

development program. Casciani said her first goal, which came with 17 minutes until halftime, set the tone for the rest of the match. Broad Run will face Tuscarora for the fourth time this season, with the Huskies up 2-1 in the series of Northern Virginia foes. “We’ll try to stay focused and just put everything out on the field, play for our seniors, play for everyone on this team, go out, have fun and put some goals in the back of the net,” Casciani said with a grin. knocking in a pair of runs. Their three-man rotation of Peebles, Marcus Van Alstine and Huesman held James Wood to just one hit. Huesman, who pitched a complete-game loss in the 2021 final against Broad Run, was given the ball in the bottom of the seventh to finish out the 2022 game. “We wanted Levi to have the ball the last inning because he’s been our guy the last two years. He deserved to be in that spot,” Kane said. “For him to get a strikeout to win the state championship was awesome. He finished full circle. He finished the job. It was really cool to watch.” Huesman wasn’t sure it was such an honor at first. “When [Kane] first told me I was going out there, my first words were, ‘You’re going to let me get dogpiled on.’ I was terrified of the dogpile. That was the biggest thing,” Huesman said. “It wasn’t that bad. Being stuck on the bottom of that is not fun. Dave Lawrence/The Local It was my first time, so I was a Hanover’s softball team rushes together in the infield for an energetic group hug after the last out in the Hawks’ 1-0 win over little scared of it. It was good, Tuscarora in the Virginia High School League Class 4 state softball championship at Riverbend High School Saturday. though.” Dave Lawrence can be lead in the second inning and Hawk batters combined for 11 homer in the second inning. Brett Alvis, Chase Hustead and steadily adding runs through hits, with Keller 3-of-4 with Peebles went 2-of-3, with a Owen Deshazo also hit doubles, reached at dlawrence@mechlothe top of the seventh. Nine five RBI, including a two-run double. Anthony Gabello, with Alvis and Hustead each cal.com.

The Mechanicsville Local June 15, 2022 21

LETTERS Continued from pg. 6

him the logical choice to replace Mr. Daniel.” Then Mr. Waddell, Henry district resident, classmate and friend of John Redd, was the first person to “introduce” him at the public hearing for school board nominations. He later followed up his support with another letter to The Mechanicsville Local in the week of May 11, 2022, urging residents to support this nomination. Why am I so focused on Mr. Waddell in this process? Because he seems the perfect example of the “Hanover Way” and the network of men that control the choices in this county. Mr. Waddell serves on the PlanRVA Commission with Supervisors Peterson and Sean Davis of the Henry District. Seems an awfully cozy arrangement for discussing

potential appointees in my opinion. So, I ask that Hanover residents reconsider the path HCPS are now set on with the appointment of an old Hanover resident that has absolutely zero ties to the school system or the families he is set to represent. He has, in his own words, told us the kind of person he is and his vision for HCPS. From the Richmond TimesDispatch “Meet the candidate: John E. Redd” published May 19, 2022, he said: “I was nominated because I made myself available to serve as a conservative, Christian voice on the School Board… Our freedoms are given to us by God, not by government, but we have been complacent and have let the distractions and ungodliness get a foothold in our society, our government and our schools. We have strayed from godly principles and are reaping the consequences of disobedience.” Last I

checked this is a public school system where there is supposed to be separation of church and state; quite frankly, these are the least concerning of his comments. Given the time I could write a paper on how Mr. Peterson’s justification for nominating Mr. Redd over any of the other candidates really was nothing more than that good old “Hanover Way,” but it won’t change anything. Instead, I will be even more present and involved in what is happening in my community and the school system. There are many of us here in Hanover that want and are fighting for change. The generation of children we are raising are even more focused on making big changes, and I couldn’t be prouder to sit back and watch the revolution of change happen at their hands. captain of his school’s cross country and track team. In addition to his athletic involvement, he was a member of the National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and the National Beta Club. Aside from his busy involvement in school, Taylor contributed to his community by organizing and helping to run a fundraiser for honey bees. He also assisted in a mental health 5k run that was held at Patrick Henry High School to help raise funds and awareness for mental health. He plans to attend Furman University to pursue a major in chemistry. Looking back on his academic and athletic success, he expressed deep appreciation for the teachers and educators that influenced him throughout high school.

“Without them, there would’ve been no chance that I could have been as successful as I’ve been in both my academic and athletic careers,” he said. “Every lesson that they’ve taught me has been invaluable and I’m just proud to see all the work finally pay off.” Taylor gave special recognition to the faculty who impacted his high school career. “I want to thank specifically Mr. Miller, my film teacher, who has been an amazing role model for my high school years,” he said. “I’d also like to thank Dr. Kupscznk, the smartest person I’ve ever met, who I’m immensely proud to call my teacher. And finally my coach Dobrinski, who has always led me down the right path.” Morin and Taylor will join their fellow Patrick Henry High School seniors in celebration of their high school academic completion on Friday, June 18 at the Farm Bureau Center at the Meadow Event Park in Doswell.
