FIRST HANOVER TOMATO

With dirt on his hands and pride in his heart, Mechanicsville resident Allen Harper announced the arrival last week of Hanover’s first tomato of 2023. According to Harper, the seeds were planted by Crowder Farms on Jan. 2 and the tomato plants were purchased from Mechanicsville Drug on March 28. On that same day, the plants were planted at Harper’s home on Rutland Road in Mechanicsville. The official word on what Harper plans to do with the first pick of the season was unclear at press time, but we’re sure of one thing: it will be delicious.

Local student a semifinalist in Presidential Scholars Program

COMMUNITY REPORT

Cordelia Crawford, a graduating senior at Hanover High School in Mechanicsville, VA has been named one of 628 semifinalists in the 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars program. The semifinalists were selected from more than 5,000 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2023. Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 59th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of their accomplishments in many areas – academic and artistic success, accomplishment in career and technical fields, leadership, strong

character and involvement in school and the community.

An International Baccalaureate diploma candidate, Cordelia is currently serving as the Vice President of Integrated Marketing on the Virginia DECA State Action Team. Last year she was president of the Hanover DECA chapter.

During the summer of 2021, she attended Regional Governor’s School for Career and Technical Advancement Program where she earned a certificate of leadership and led her team to win the Best Marketing Plan and the overall shark tank competition.

A Gold Award recipient, Cordelia is also founder and president of the Hanover Environmental Club. She is part of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Student Leadership Program and Watershed Outdoor Bill of Rights

committee. She attended the James River Associations’ Leadership Academy and volunteered with the Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps.

In the fall, Cordelia will attend the Clarks Honors College at University of Oregon where she plans to double major in environmental studies and business. But first she will attend a UO study abroad program in London in August to study global business and leadership.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in academics, leadership and service to school and community. It was expanded in 1979 to recognize students

OPINION

Magic of music remains today

After more than 50 years in the business, Oakland’s Tower of Power is still performing the type of soul music that can still produce goosebumps to those close enough to hear and feel the power of their acclaimed horn section.

The group has comprised a catalog of hits that span decades, many of them favorites in the mind of a generation that formed relationships, found careers or started families to the backdrop of a Tower of Power song.

And who among us hasn’t lamented at the breakup of what seemed like the perfect relationship while listening to “So Very Hard to Go.”

There’s no doubt the group is one of many

A geography lesson not soon forgotten

that contributed to the soundtrack of a generation, and one that continues to perform this day.

But, it’s not pop music of the past that inspired me to write this column.

It’s the current state of my playlist that my daughter recently reminded me contains no current entries. Now, the word current is subjective in this case, because, in reality, there’s probably not an entry on that list that qualifies as this century.

It dawned on me that I must be sadly out of touch with today’s music, or trapped in some sort of time warp where the music of my past is the only genre that appeals or beckons me. I’m not oblivious to the fact there are dozens of amazing artists making spectacu -

lar music, but truth be known, I’m only briefly acquainted with many of the new artists.

And, I’m less informed on what qualifies as a hit in today’s music world, and I’m always leery of how some sounds in today’s music are produced. Again, it’s not that I don’t appreciate the talent, but somehow, most of the songs don’t connect with me either on an emotional or audible level, further confirmation that styles are generational and reflections of a specific era.

Having admitted that I am a musical dinosaur, I’m now prepared to explain the Tower of Power connection. In addition to the numerous hit records the group has enjoyed, it’s a lesser known

Editor’s note: The following is part of a continuing series in which we ask readers to share a true story with us—any story—as long as it happened to them or a family member. Do you have a story to tell? Send it news@ mechlocal.com.

Since Ukraine is in the news so much now, I’ll tell you a cute story that happened in the mid 1970s.

I was working with a Christian missionary organization up in New England. We were in New Hampshire, and one of the young ladies in the group had grown up in Ukraine,

but moved to Canada in her mid-teens. Beverly had a real heavy European accent, beautiful and thick. A really sweet young lady. I was talking to her once, and asked her where she was from. Beverly said, “Ukraine.” I replied, “Oh, so you’re Russian?” She told me, “No” in that accent. “I’m Ukrainian!”

I said, “Well, USSR, it’s kind of a conglomerate. All these countries together. But it’s the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and it’s controlled out of Moscow. So in a way, you’re controlled by Moscow.” Her eyes flashed, and she fixed me with her gaze, and said in that beautiful European

accent, “Nohh. I. Am. UKRAINian.”

It was the best geography lesson I had in my entire life. Now I know more about the split-up of Europe after World War II, where basically Russia was given half of Europe, and the West got control of the western side. It’s heartbreaking to see how we abandoned to Russia those poor people in formerly free countries. But Beverly was definitely letting me know she was not Russian, and I guess her homeland still feels the same way, the way they’re fighting the Russian Army. God bless the Ukrainians. They’re incredible fighters.

Library of Virginia marking 200 years with 200

The Library of Virginia, one of the oldest state libraries and archives in the nation, will mark its bicentennial in 2023 with a free exhibition — 200 Years, 200 Stories, running until Oct. 28, 2023. The exhibition and multimedia experience celebrate 200 Virginians whose fascinating narratives are housed in the Library’s collections and together reflect the stories of Virginia.

The Library of Virginia was founded by the General Assembly on Jan. 24, 1823, to organize, care for and manage the state’s growing collection of books and official records — many of which date back to the early colonial period. Since then, the collection has grown to 2 million books, newspapers, maps, prints, and photographs, as well as 130 million manuscript items, making the Library the most comprehensive resource in the world for the study of Virginia history, culture and government.

“We’ve been fortunate to

play such an important role in preserving Virginia’s history and culture for two centuries,” said Librarian of Virginia Sandra Treadway, Ph.D.

“This exhibition provides a great opportunity to educate the public about the significance of our collections and engage them in exploring the past while reflecting on how it connects to the present and our next century.”

Rather than a Top Ten or a Who’s Who, 200 Years, 200 Stories profiles Virginians of all stripes: heroes and villains, the famous and infamous, the powerful and the powerless. Stories feature Virginians like Ethel Bailey Furman, one of the first Black female architects in Virginia; David Martin, founder of the Martin Agency and creator of the famed tagline “Virginia is for Lovers”; Chinese immigrant Ow Chuck Sam, who became a naturalized citizen and served in the armed forces during World War II; and many more. History and art specialist Susan Glasser served as guest curator, help-

ing to bring an outside perspective and select content that would reflect the diversity of Virginia’s narratives.

“We want exhibition visitors to experience the joy of discovery felt by our patrons every day when they encounter the treasures within our collections,” said Greg Kimball, Ph.D., the Library’s director of public services and outreach. The exhibition begins in the lobby with montages of individuals featured in the stories, a large map of Virginia on the lobby floor identifying the locations of our featured individuals, and an interactive kiosk for visitors to explore the evolution of the Library’s physical site or enjoy a look at the institution’s internal workings.

Once visitors enter the Exhibition Gallery, another interactive kiosk presents the stories of 200 Virginians, searchable by themes and location, while “discovery drawers” allow visitors to explore ephemera collections with items such as travel brochures, posters and more.

But back when I got started

There was a righteous sound

•Personalizedcare

track that perfectly explains my musical preferences and unapologetically captures the moment entitled “Diggin’ on James Brown.”

The song begins, “I’ve been through all them changes

A lot of stuff came down

I’ve dealt with all the issues

You might say I’ve been around

It doesn’t matter what I’ve been through I’ll still be diggin’ on James Brown.”

The song ends with a valid prediction regarding the fate of my narrowly-scoped musical collection

“Ya know the more things change

The more they stay the same

It may be a different age

But I’m on the same page Cause one thing that I’ve found

I’ll still be diggin’ on James Brown.”

My children will never appreciate my affection for old soul music, or the other artists in my collection they’ve never heard of.

That also means they won’t experience the exhilaration of hearing a powerful horn section like Tower of Power, or know why I’ll still be diggin’ on James Brown.

Randolph-Macon dedicates new Duke Hall

COMMUNITY REPORT

Randolph-Macon College recently celebrated the official dedication of Duke Hall, a new building on the north end of campus that serves as a home for RMC’s successful athletic program and its new Physician Assistant (PA) Studies graduate program.

Students, coaches, faculty, town leaders, and the many donors who helped make the project possible gathered to celebrate the space. RandolphMacon President Robert R. Lindgren, Board of Trustees Chair Sue Schick, and others cut the ceremonial ribbon after a brief ceremony, followed by a reception and guided tours of the three-story building.

“Duke Hall is just so quintessentially Randolph-Macon. It is multi-dimensional and multi-faceted, just like a Randolph-Macon education,” Randolph-Macon President Robert L. Lindgren told the assembled crowd. “For each of our students have their own journey—one culminating in their own unique educational experience, while preparing them to be productive citizens and fulfilled individuals.”

The 45,000-square-foot building, adjacent to Day Field, features a dedicated floor for Randolph-Macon’s new Physician Assistant (PA) Studies graduate program, which began in January 2023. The program’s distinctive two-year curriculum, with a focus on health equity, educates PAs for an in-demand role in the healthcare profession. PA Studies is the College’s first graduate program in the modern era. Applications are now open for a second cohort, which will enroll in January 2024.

Central areas of Duke Hall also include three new classrooms for general academic use.

Ashland Fourth Fridays amplify artists

CONTRIBUTED REPORT

Downtown Ashland has enjoys a vibrant community of artisans–-jewelers, painters, designers, entertainers, chefs, farmers, musicians, and more. May 26 through September 22, Ashland Fourth Fridays events will celebrate local artisans with sidewalk sales, art exhibi ts, live music, and outdoor dining. Now in its fourth season, some local artists could hardly wait to return to the Center of the Universe for the monthly celebrations.

“People in Ashland are just wonderful. I met people of all ages and backgrounds,” painter Lizzie Brown recalls from Ashland Fourth Friday’s past. “It made me realize that my work is approachable and accessible for everyone. I’m looking forward to coming back to Ashland Fourth Fridays to meet and connect with more people.”

Connection with community and craft is a goal of Ashland Fourth Friday vendor Matt Windham of Ares Creations and Reclaim too. By repurposing salvaged wood, Matt gives forgotten materials new life using ancient techniques. “Our ancestors handcrafted everything. They didn’t use screws or nails, so it drove me to save what was left behind and make something people would appreciate,” Matt describes. “What excites me the most is when someone says, ‘Wow! I’ve never seen anything like that.’”

Ashland Fourth Fridays guests can discover original art of many genres–from crochet toys, to stained glass, to custom fashions. But that is not all, they can also shake a leg to live music at the freshly constructed Ashland Town Hall Pavilion or dig into delectable dining.

Food truck favorites like Monique’s Crepes and Cheesaggedon are slated to join Ashland Fourth Fridays during the season, as well as new mouthwater-

ing temptations like authentic Greek food by Hellenic Kouzina Greek Cafe and Native American-owned food truck Hungry Hungry Arrow. Downtown Ash-

land boasts many outdoor dining options, so visitors can enjoy the fun from their seats.

“Ashland is a charming and unique place to visit, and Ash-

land Fourth Fridays are a great reminder that there is always something new to see here,” said Kitty Barnes, Ashland Fourth Fridays organizer and Chief Operating Officer of Red Vein Escape. “In addition to the artists and musicians who bring their talents to the streets, shops and restaurants get a chance to highlight some of their own creations with extended hours, dinner and drink specials, and lots of fun in-shop.”

Creatives who are interested in displaying their craft at Ashland Fourth Fridays are encour-

aged to submit an application. Downtown Ashland Association accepts applications through August.

“The fellow Ashland Fourth Fridays vendors are so helpful and easy going,” says Lizzie. “It’s really fun and lots of people come out.”

Fourth quarter run pushes Hawks ahead of Indians

In a game of runs where both the Powhatan Indians and Hanover Hawks boys lacrosse teams yanked momentum back and forth between each other like it was tug of war, the Hanover Hawks were the one to end the game with the last definitive run to capture the victory.

With the Indians (5-5) traveling to take on the Hawks (7-5) for a night time showdown on Wednesday, May 10, the game began with a 4-0 Indians run in the first quarter and that trend of unanswered goals continued throughout until the Hawks ran off six consecutive goals between the end of the third quarter and early in the fourth to pull ahead late for a 12-8 win.

The first quarter was all Powhatan, with the team opening up the scoring in the first two minutes with a goal by senior Connor Walters, who scored the second goal of the quarter as well and finished with three goals on the night.

Late in the first quarter, a turnover caused by a great defensive play from senior Jack Connelly sparked a run that ended with a transition finish from senior midfielder Parker Unmussig to give Powhatan its third goal of the quarter. In the final two minutes of the period, the Indians run continued with junior Carter Zaun beating a defender and firing a shot past the keeper.

In the second quarter, the momentum flipped to the side of the Hawks, who finally got on the board with a goal by senior midfielder Gavin Quinn in the first 90 seconds. With some life after Quinn’s rocket shot, the Hawks won the ensu-

ing faceoff and punished the Indians with pressure that eventually resulted in a goal by freshman Tate Whitaker to cut the lead in half with four minutes left.

While Hanover’s offense developed its groove, the defense deserves its share of credit as well, tightening up from a tough first quarter by holding the Indians to just one goal in the 12-minute span.

With everyone in sync, the Hawks eventually tied the game up with two goals in 44 seconds from sophomore

Ryan Eager and Whitaker, though the run was snapped by a response finish from junior Ryland Powers to put the Indians back up just six seconds after losing their lead.

To start the second half, the Indians offense looked motivated to expand the lead back to multiple goals, as Connelly scored in the opening minute to make it a 6-4 game. Soon after, Walters reached the hat trick mark with a finish to put the Indians ahead 7-4 with 10:27 remaining in the quarter, but it would be the last goal of the

third for Powhatan.

The Hawks opened their own 6-0 run with three of those coming in the third quarter. Senior midfielder Carter Grizzard started thing off followed by back-to-back goals in the final minute from senior Rock Schraa to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the final 12 minutes.

With just over 10 minutes left, the Hawks finally got their first lead of the game off of Whitaker’s third goal of the night, while Schraa scored the next one thanks to excellent ball movement from the

Hawks that gave him space to fire at the hole. Hanover’s excellent fourth quarter run continued when Eager put his team ahead 10-7 with 7:30 left in the game. The Indians got some temporarily life with under seven minutes to play when a turnover on the Hawks’ side allowed Connelly to find a cutting Conner Kluis open with a good look in front of the net to make it 10-8 and finally put an end to the Hawks run. Powhatan continued to play aggressive in the hopes of getting one more late run

of their own, but Hanover was able to put a stamp on the victory with two more goals from Whitaker and Schraa to secure a much-needed home victory late in the season. The Indians have games against Mechanicsville and Matoaca left on the regular season schedule to close out their season while the Hawks will take on the Patrick Henry Patriots in their season finale.

Hughes pitches shutout to lift Patriots over Raiders

Mechanicsville – Any young sports team can expect growing pains. But they can also reach milestones, sometimes when you need one the most.

Coming off a difficult loss to Louisa County earlier in the week, Patrick Henry softball faced a trip to rival Atlee on Friday, May 12. The result was pivotal, with both teams fighting for playoff position in Class 4, Region B.

And, after surviving a first inning where the Raiders got three runners aboard but couldn’t score, Patriots freshman Morgan Hughes settled in and, with a stellar defensive performance, Patrick Henry won a gritty 1-0 game moving its record to 11-7, while Atlee dropped to 12-6.

“We rallied the troops, had a really good practice yesterday,” noted Patrick Henry head coach Chris Hughes when asked about trying to get his team refocused after the Louisa defeat. “We talked about battling through adversity, and they really responded today.”

It was a total team effort led by Morgan Hughes and a defense that, time and

again, made sensational plays to keep Atlee off the scoreboard. It began in the first inning when, after two walks, catcher Kenzie Holloway threw out Sierra Kegley at third base. That play cost Atlee a critical early run as Bailey Bucholz singled in the next at-bat. Hughes retired Gianna Booker and Shannon McKeever to end the Atlee threat.

The Raiders would have base runners in each of the first four innings, including another threat in the third. With Kegley at second base, Bucholz launched a ball deep down the left field line. Lauren Durgala dove to make an incredible catch, her glove just under the ball as it beelined for the ground.

In the fourth after McKeever earned an opening walk, the next two batters attempted to bunt, but both ended with pop outs to Holloway. In the fifth, when Camdyn Metts sought to bunt her way on to begin the frame, the ball briefly hit the air, just long enough for Hughes to dive forward out of the circle for another circus catch.

“We practice that kind of stuff, but I don’t really like, well, when you see it, catch it,” Hughes said

of the play.

That play helped preserve a Patrick Henry lead taken in the top of the fifth. Holloway singled to right, then Hanna Six launched a

double to the wall in right field that allowed Holloway to score, her slide beating McKeever’s tag attempt.

The defense sealed

the win in the seventh when a Kaitlyn Crenshaw screamer to shortstop was snared by the diving Mackenzie Yates. Then, two batters later, Metts

lined the ball up the middle, but right into the glove of Hughes. In an instant, frustration became jubilation.

Hughes, who doesn’t pitch on her travel team, is happy for the opportunity to step into the circle for the Patriots.

“It’s been really fun. I enjoy pitching,” Hughes explained. “I’m not the best at it and we’re still working on a lot of things, but I’ve definitely enjoyed pitching this year, having a team behind me that’s a family, all the time.”

The young Patriots remained in eighth place in Region 4B with a week left in the regular season. The Raiders, despite the loss, are holding steady in sixth. Hanover, at 17-0 and riding a 42-game winning streak, is barely ahead of 17-1 Dinwiddie for the top seed in the region.

Atlee finishes regular season play hosting Mechanicsville Friday, while the Patriots host the Hawks. Coach Hughes hopes to build off the Atlee win, not just for this year, but for seasons to come.

“We’ve grown up a lot this year,” Hughes said. “The future’s bright for us, and we’re looking forward to it.”

Personal and school records are broken at Dogwood Track Classic

CONTRIBUTED REPORT

For many, the first weekend in May means watching the Kentucky Derby and horses race on the track, but for Atlee’s high school track and field team, it means a trip to UVAs Lannigan Field to participate in the largest outdoor meet in the state.

On May 5-6, 181 teams partici-

pated in the 59th annual Dogwood Track classic. The meet hosts elite competition from schools across the state and beyond.

Friday night kicked off with sprint medley relays and distance medley relays as well as the 2K steeplechase. These events are not usually raced in high school so many took advantage of the op-

portunity to run their best athletes in each leg of the events.

Atlee’s Patrick Allen was a natural in the Steeplechase, winning the event and breaking the Atlee record with a time of 6:10.03.

Later that night the 3200 races began. The weekend’s full moon must have brought out the best in the runners as many set major

personal records in their races.

Travis Albon had Atlee’s best finish, placing 22nd with a time of 9:25.48.

On Saturday, all eyes were on the first heats of both the boys and girls 1600 race. In the boys race, Allen once again broke a school record, running a 4:14.25 and placing second. The previous

record of 4:14.84 stood for 15 years and was held by Ben DeJarnette.

Senior Courtney Mudd ran a 2:21.59 in the 800 as well, winning her heat and qualifying for states.

Other state qualifiers were Josie Rempe in the triple jump and Albon in the 3200. Rempe’s 36 foot, 1.5 inch mark in the triple jump placed her in fourth.
