BAY OF PLENTY REGIONAL MAP
Welcome to
THE BAY OF PLENTY Generations of New Zealanders regard the Bay of Plenty as their ‘happy place’. Known for its clear blue skies, white sand beaches and stunning natural beauty, this is where holiday memories are made.
Highlights & Must Do’s Take a boat or helicopter tour to New Zealand’s most active volcano. Learn about White Island’s geothermal history and extraordinary landscape. ĥĥ Visit Mount Maunganui and walk around Mauao’s popular base track or climb 232 metres to the top. Swim, surf, kitesurf or paddleboard right off the beach. ĥĥ Kayak on picturesque Lake McLaren at twilight to a magical glow worm canyon. ĥĥ
6
By following the spectacular Pacific Coast Highway you’ll encounter idyllic, friendly towns right along this 125km stretch of coastline, from Waihi Beach in the west through to Ōhope in the east, with the thriving city of Tauranga sitting right in the middle. The Bay of Plenty provides easy access to top tourist attractions including White Island – New Zealand’s only active marine volcano. Step foot on this geothermal wonder and experience nature’s raw power up close. Hobbiton’s acclaimed movie set is a short 45 minute drive away, and Rotorua, Hamilton and Auckland are all within easy reach. Our prime location and sensational climate attracts holidaymakers year-round. In summer Mount Maunganui’s main beach is the place to be seen, while those who prefer quiet strolls along the sand
and plenty of space can spread out at picture-perfect locations along the coast including Bowentown, Papamoa, Matata and Ōhope. The original Maori inhabitants first stepped ashore here about 700 years ago. Four centuries later, Captain Cook sailed past on the Endeavour and named this region the ‘Bay of Plenty’ due to its abundant resources. That description still rings true today. Much of New Zealand’s kiwifruit, avocados and manuka honey products are produced here, alongside the freshest kaimoana (seafood). Tauranga is home to New Zealand's largest port and has also become a leading cruise ship destination. Visitors can enjoy magnificent walkways, sparkling harbours, Māori culture, adrenaline-fuelled adventures, boutique shopping and a thriving café and restaurant scene.

WHAKATĀNE & ŌHOPE Whakatāne is the Bay of Plenty’s cultural heart. Immerse yourself in this town’s rich Māori history and enjoy authentic cultural experiences, or revel in the ocean playground which is home to abundant marine life.
Highlights & Must Do’s Book a guided tour to explore Whakaari (White Island) by boat or helicopter – New Zealand’s only active marine volcano. ĥĥ Kayak around picturesque Moutohorā (Whale Island) and chance seeing seals, blue penguins and other marine life. ĥĥ Head over the hill to Ōhope Beach from Whakatāne via the Kohi Point Walkway. Admire stunning cliff top views and enjoy a stop at the secluded Otarawairere Beach. ĥĥ
Whakatāne is the gateway to one of the Bay of Plenty’s most popular tourist attractions – Whakaari (White Island). This geothermal giant lies 49km offshore and is New Zealand’s only active marine volcano. Billowing steam is often seen on the horizon and guided tours depart daily from Whakatāne by boat or helicopter. Most of the volcano sits beneath the sea, so you can disembark directly onto its live crater. This is an amazing chance to step foot on an alienlooking landscape and see nature’s raw power up close – a true bucket list experience. Another great place to explore offshore is Moutohorā (Whale Island), a wildlife sanctuary home to an impressive New Zealand fur seal colony and other native birds, plants and reptiles. Visit Mātaatua Wharenui, an intricately carved wooden building which spent more than 130 years travelling around
Australia and the UK before returning home to Whakatāne. Feel the spiritual presence of Māori ancestors as you enjoy a digital lightshow combined with cultural songs and stories that will leave your spine tingling. Whakatāne is known as the ‘kiwi capital of the world’ and is home to many of the rare flightless birds, New Zealand’s national symbol. Listen for their calls at night as they scuttle through nearby bush and reserves. Keen anglers love coming here all year round. Chase big game fish offshore, or simply cast your line off the town’s wharf. The surrounding ocean is teaming with marine life and there are plenty of options to spend a day out on the water. Over the hill from Whakatāne you’ll find a magical seaside town, Ōhope. Ōhope Beach was recently voted New Zealand’s most loved beach in a nationwide AA travel poll and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque spot.

Road Rules in New Zealand
Bay of Plenty Visitor Guide
New Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, keep left and give way to all traffic on your right. All traffic turning right should give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left. This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants of a moving vehicle to wear a seatbelt and it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on open roads is 100km/h, 50km/h in residential areas unless otherwise marked.

DISCOVER THE BAY OF PLENTY The Bay of Plenty is a coastal region in the upper North Island which lies between the Coromandel and the East Cape. Tauranga (in the west) and Whakatāne (in the east) are the two biggest urban centres. They’re surrounded by a number of small regional towns including Waihi Beach, Katikati, Papamoa, Te Puke and Ōhope. Mount Maunganui is a popular suburb of Tauranga but is often referred to as a destination in its own right. Remember to always allow more time than you think to get from A to B. There are plenty of beautiful vistas and photo opportunities – especially when travelling along the Pacific Coast Highway.
