Freedom camping

There are four council-managed areas throughout the region where you can camp in a selfcontained vehicle. The maximum stay at a single site is three nights and four days, before it’s time to move on and make space for another traveller. Look out for signs around the region that help you determine whether you can park your vehicle up for the night. If in doubt, check the Taupō District Council website: taupodc.govt.nz.

Keeping our waters clean

Taupō’s waterways are some of the cleanest in the world. Please make sure you know how to protect the quality of the lakes and rivers from invasive weeds, algae and pest fish. Follow these simple instructions whenever you move between waterways. Check your equipment and remove any visible matter such as weed or algae. If your gear has not been dry for at least 48 hours then clean with a 5% detergent solution and soak for at least one minute. Ensure your gear is completely dry to touch, inside and out, then leave to dry for another 48 hours before you use it. biosecurity.govt.nz

When to visit

No matter what the time of year, there is plenty to see and do in the Taupō region.

Summer

Dec / Jan / Feb / 18oC – 30oC

From the first early dawn rays to the late evening sunsets, Taupō’s long summer days are filled with the promise of endless fun. The region’s lakes are abuzz with boats, kayaks and swimmers. Up above skydivers sail through the clear blue skies. In the rivers, the trout are in peak condition, and ready to strike, and in the forests native trees are heavy with berries to attract birds.

Autumn

Mar / Apr / May / 12oC – 25oC

In Taupō, autumn is the season to relax and indulge the senses. As the heat of summer cools into crisp mornings, warm days and starfilled nights. Lakeside walks, hikes and biking are the best way to see the spectacular autumn colours. A boat cruise is a relaxing way to admire the scenic wonders of Lake Taupō. For keen golfers, any one of the top-class golf courses offers a great day on the fairways.

Winter

Jun / Jul / Aug / -2oC – 15oC

As snow blankets the mountains and the days turn cold with azure blue skies, Taupō becomes the ultimate alpine holiday destination. Find winter fun in Tongariro National Park, offering scenic hikes and breathtaking landscapes for every adventurer. After a big day of exploring, the geothermal hot pools around Taupō and Tūrangi will quickly warm chilly bones and re-energise tired muscles.

Spring

Sept / Oct / Nov / 8oC – 21oC

Thanks to the free-draining, pumice-rich soils, Taupō trails are ready for hiking and biking on the mild, clear days. Forest walks, scenic cruises and days on the golf course are even more beautiful than usual, with new leaves and flowers beginning to blossom. Welcome the warmer weather and checkout exciting events like Graffiato: Taupō Street Art Festival, local markets, and family-friendly events - the perfect excuse to get outside and celebrate together.
