Lake Taupō is the size of Singapore
The region is home to New Zealand’s first ever National Park, created in 1887
220,000 litres of freshwater thunder down Huka Falls every second
Lake Taupō is actually a caldera, and has erupted around 28 times since it formed
With humbling views of New Zealand’s largest freshwater lake, striking volcanic landscapes, fantastic fishing spots and the famous crystal blue Huka Falls, Taupō is truly blessed with world-class natural attractions. Discover the region’s pristine green countryside, spectacular mountain scenery, peaceful native bush, and some of the largest pine forests in the Southern Hemisphere. With a unique blend of natural beauty, diversity and experiences, Taupō is the ultimate adventure playground. The boutique-style town centre is packed with gourmet food options, from casual cafes to upmarket restaurants. While away a relaxing day out wandering the art and craft galleries and well-stocked shops. Accommodation near the lake is plentiful, with lots of recreational activities to keep everyone busy. Taupō is also widely known as the events capital of New Zealand, with a busy calendar that keeps the town buzzing throughout the year. Venture out of the main centre and discover beautiful bays and welcoming townships with their own unique flavour. Follow the lake around to the west and enjoy Acacia Bay and Kinloch or take in the captivating beauty of the Western Bays. Head south and experience the rewarding adventures waiting for you at the southern lake. Admire the township of Tūrangi, gateway into the awe-inspiring Tongariro National Park region.
GEOTHERMAL HISTORY The stunning Great Lake Taupō may look peaceful and serene now, but in fact owes its beauty to a violent and traumatic history. Located in one of the most active geothermal and volcanic regions in the world, with many fault lines crossing the area, Lake Taupō sits in the caldera of a volcano which began erupting around 300,000 years ago. The caldera itself was formed from a collapse during the Oruanui eruption approximately 27,000 years ago, which threw out 750 cubic kilometres of ash and pumice. This eruption was followed by one of the largest ever recorded volcanic eruptions in the world. The Taupō eruption, around 1,800 years ago, felled great forests and burned trees 30 kilometres away. This devasting eruption covered 20,000 square kilometres with pumice. It was so large that legends say the ash blocked the sun for days following, and ancient Roman and Chinese texts report people seeing dark red skies. While the volcano has since calmed down, you can still enjoy the region’s geothermal history today. Visit one of the many geothermal wonderlands in the region, dip your toes into one of the hotspots scattered around the lake, or take a soak in a naturally heated, mineral-rich hot pool. Just watch out for the steam!
From the sedate to the sensational, via a leisurely lake cruise or a thrilling white-water adventure, you’ll soon love Taupō like the locals do.

TAUPŌ’S BUCKET LIST ADVENTURES
Must See - Must Do The Taupō region is full of amazing experiences to discover, but if you’re short on time or looking for the quintessential Taupō adventure, here are a few to add to your must-do list. Māori Rock Carvings One of New Zealand’s most extraordinary cultural artworks, the Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings are a sight to see, whether by boat or by kayak. Towering 14 metres above Lake Taupō’s deep waters, these contemporary carvings by artist Matahi Brightwell have become one of the North Island’s biggest tourist attractions. It’s also a favoured spot among locals for parking up to enjoy some fishing or water sports.
Aratiatia Rapids Adventure further down the Waikato River and discover the stunning transformation of the Aratiatia Rapids. Three times a day in winter and four in summer, nearby Aratiatia Dam opens its gates and sends thousands of litres of water coursing down. Get there early before the dam gates open while the gully is peaceful, and watch it transform into churning, raging rapids before your eyes. The whole family will love this unique experience.
Waihora Lagoon - Pureora Forest Park, LoveTaupo.com
Trout Fishing Did you know that Lake Taupō provides some of the best trout fishing in New Zealand and even the world? The trout are not allowed to be sold, so the only way to taste a brown or rainbow trout is to catch one yourself. There’s nothing more relaxing than chartering a boat on the pristine lake or fly-fishing in a crystalclear river. If you’re fortunate to catch one, some Taupō restaurants are happy to cook your catch for you – just be sure to call in advance and remember to take your fishing licence with you.
Pureora Forest Park From day trips to overnight stays in a Department of Conservation hut, Pureora offers great walks as well as cycle trails. Waihora Lagoon (730m/15 mins) is a

short, family-friendly walk threading through tall rimu and kahikatea trees to the namesake lagoon, a small and serene rain-fed lake surrounded by swamp forest. Rimu Walk (1.7km/1hr) is an easy loop walk taking you from the end of Kakaho Road through dense rimu forest abundant with rich birdlife.
Mount Ruapehu Hit the snow in winter or see the sights in summer! For snow bunnies, the Whakapapa and Tūroa ski fields provide the largest commercial skiing and snowboarding area in New Zealand. There are terrains to suit all skill levels, plus areas for sledding, tobogganing, and tubing. Beginners will enjoy the dedicated learners’ area at Happy Valley. During summer or winter, head to the top of Whakapapa on

Sky Waka, New Zealand’s longest gondola. Take in awe-inspiring views of the World Dual Heritage National Park or enjoy one of the various scenic walks.
Waikato River Float On a hot summer’s day, you can spot hundreds of visitors and locals alike gently floating down the Waikato River in rafts, inflatable rings, boats, and kayaks. Grab your floaty or inflatable and soon you too can be enjoying the peace and serenity of the river. Park a pick-up car at Hipapatua Reserve, drive to the Gates Park carpark and hop in at the calm river opening straight over the field. Wear a life jacket and be careful not to miss the exit and end up going over the Huka Falls!
Huka Falls Vivid blue waters and thundering cascades make Huka Falls a mesmerising, memorable experience. This breath-taking 11 metre waterfall erupts from a natural gorge, barrelling into the Waikato River below. It’s also the most visited and photographed natural attraction in New Zealand – you’ll know why when you see it for yourself. Every angle provides a spectacle, with multiple viewpoints to look out from. And you’ll hear the falls well before you see them, as nearly a quarter of a million litres of water plummet down the waterfall every second.

MAKE A SPLASH!
Swimming Spots From sandy lakeside beaches to geothermal waters, fans of freshwater swimming will be spoilt for choice. Lake Taupō is famous for its crystal-clear water, and in summer you’ll spot the locals cooling off in one of its many bays. Acacia Bay Two bays make up this family favourite spot: Acacia Bay North is set up for splashing about with a jumping jetty and pontoon; around the corner, Acacia Bay South has a boat ramp ideal for adventures on the lake. Otumuheke Stream
Another superb swimming spot boasting large sandy beach areas with a gentle incline, and no rocks or weeds underfoot. Five Mile Bay is a popular swimming spot with plenty of room for everyone, and the bonus of warm water if you dig down deep enough into the sand. Head out past Wharewaka Point and pitch up anywhere along the long stretch of sandy bay.
This free-to-access geothermal stream is a favourite spot among locals and visitors, who come here to bathe in the natural hot springs that flow into the Waikato River. Part of the Spa Thermal Park, it’s just a short walk away from the town centre. Soak in the naturally heated rock pools or under a waterfall and enjoy this 100% natural geothermal experience. The temperature varies depending on how close you are to the hot spring, so you can move around the river and find your ideal spot. There are changing rooms, lockers and toilets nearby, plus a cute kiosk to grab coffee and ice creams afterwards.
Rangatira Point Track This hidden swimming spot is tucked away down a trail at Rangatira Point, accessible through the native bush to the flat rocks on the point. Keep an eye on little ones, as the water here is deep. It’s close enough to Mine Bay to swim to the Māori Rock Carvings and has great rocks for jumping into the lake from.
Kinloch Drive just twenty minutes from Taupō centre and discover gorgeous Kinloch, with a large sandy beach and crystalclear waters. Kinloch’s relaxed vibe make it a perfect swimming spot and getaway, with a pontoon to jump off for the kids and a nearby shop for lunch or an ice cream.

ALFRESCO AT ITS BEST
Picnic Spots With gorgeous lakeside views and a host of delicious takeaway options, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to alfresco eating. Here are some great spots around the Taupō region - pack your picnic blankets and get out there. Wharewaka Point This bustling new suburb is a favourite among families, and Wharewaka Point caters to all with a playground, lake access, and undercover barbecues. This pleasant reserve has plenty of space and is situated seven kilometres from the town centre. It sweeps round to Five Mile Bay, another popular swimming spot.
Kinloch Well worth the 15-minute drive from central Taupō, Kinloch is a beautiful place to enjoy lunch by the lake and a swim. There’s a small playground for the little ones, and a café and general store selling takeaways and ice creams, great for those hot summer afternoons.
Te Ātea - Tapuaeharuru More than a photo opportunity, Te Ātea (the Māori word for ‘space’) is a meeting place for all. The most poignant feature of Te Ātea is the giant centrepiece the pou (a pillar/spear) and ancestor of Kani - carved from a 2,000-year-old Totara tree by master carver Delani Brown. Circling the centrepiece are 13 steel columns, which represent the rivers and streams that feed into Lake Taupō. Surrounding the sculpture, beautifully kept grounds for friends and family to picnic with unspoilt views of Lake Taupō and the Central Plateau mountains.
Acacia Bay Whether you choose North Bay to picnic while the kids enjoy jumping off the jetty and the swimming pontoon, or set up camp at South Bay by the boat ramp, Acacia Bay is a huge family favourite. Sprawl on a blanket, take in the sun, a picnic, and a swim.

The Lake Rotopounamu Track circles the lake and is a special favourite among nature lovers, birdwatches and families.

Explore the Volcanic Tapestry Nestled within the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, Tongariro National Park stands as an emblem of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Renowned globally for its rugged volcanic landscapes and an array of exhilarating activities, this UNESCO dual World Heritage area entices visitors year-round with its majestic allure. The park is home to the most dominant and breathtaking features of the North Island: Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro, and Mt Ngauruhoe. Among these giants lies the crown jewel experience: the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Revered as one of New Zealand’s premier single-day hikes, this trail promises a profound communion with nature’s splendour.
Seasonal Adventures Regardless of the time of year, Tongariro National Park boasts a plethora of activities to suit every adventurer’s desires. As the seasons shift, so do the opportunities. Summer heralds vibrant hikes through emerald-green alpine lakes, active craters, and steaming vents, while winter transforms the landscape into a snowy wonderland—adding a layer of challenge and beauty to the intrepid trek.
Unveiling the Alpine Crossing Embarking on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is not just a trek; it’s an odyssey through an everchanging volcanic terrain. The trek can be steep and unpredictable, so be sure to wear proper clothing, suitable footwear, and bring plenty of food and water.
