“It’s Hammer Time for The Hammack Collection”

Several years ago brothers Glenn and Irv Hammack resolved to collect a few of their favorite cars, restore them and save them for future enthusiasts to enjoy. The deeper they got into their new hobby, the more fun and satisfaction they derived, and their collection grew into an impressive gathering of hard-to-find classics spanning the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies. They began sharing the fruits of their labors with the public, at car shows and in a museum they built for the collection, which once numbered over one hundred American classics, all restored to superb quality. Among the stars of the Hammack Collection are Irv’s outstanding group of Pontiac Bonneville convertibles representing every year of production from 1957 to ‘67, and Glenn’s fleet of highly desirable early and mid-year Corvettes, all finished to the high standard that has become a hallmark of the Hammacks’ great enterprise.

“We have always searched for special cars to save for posterity”, says Glenn, “and we emphasize quality. Every one of these cars is special to us, and we’ve restored each one to stand tall over its peers; every one is rebuilt to premier condition – these are top-shelf cars.” The Hammack Collection offered by Mecum Auction at Kissimmee, FL comprises over fifty of the most desirable collector cars of the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies, each one an outstanding example of its breed.

Higher prices translated into disappointing sales, making these vintage trucks a rare commodity today. The handsome Ivory and Red 1957 Cameo offered here is even more unique than most others that survive today, having been built with heater delete yet equipped with air conditioning for its California purchaser, who enjoyed the highest level of luxury and flash then available in a pickup. 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe Coupe 216 CI, 3-Speed

Chevrolet’s post-war sales climb was due in large part to the success of its new-for-1949 issue, which was carried over to 1950 in several series. The Deluxe was an immensely popular entry, offering room for growing families and reliability for the ever-expanding postwar road system. Finished in Windsor Blue with a Grey interior, this 2-door Deluxe utilizes Chevrolet’s 216 CI straight six hooked to a column-shift 3-speed manual transmission. Bunkie Knudsen took his new plans for Pontiac a giant step forward in 1959 with the new “Wide Track” concept that expanded the tread by over 4.5 inches front and rear in the new Bonneville. Handling and cornering were much improved, and the new stance afforded stylists a foundation for one of the most attractive and tasteful styling packages of that year. The new Bonneville employed a massive greenhouse, sweeping front and rear decks and, for the very first time, a split front grille that would become a Pontiac styling trademark. Grand in scale and presentation, the 1959 Bonneville convertible offered here showcases not only its attractive new styling but the famous new 389 Tri-Power engine that would soon gain fame as the core of Pontiac’s burgeoning performance image.
