obert Lozins is such a dedicated Pontiac fan that he still has the 1968 Firebird he bought in 1974 at the age of eighteen, a 400 CI convertible he bought from a high school friend. “I just really liked that car, and from there my interest spread to other Pontiacs - the GTO is another favorite; the Ram Air and Super Duty cars, I like them all.” Those interests are well reflected in Lozins’ collection of eight performance Pontiacs from the muscle car era, a period during which Pontiac’s stylists and engineers could always be counted on to produce fascinating, sometimes even eclectic cars that always combined bold styling with awe-inspiring performance. The Robert Lozins Collection has something for every fan of Sixties Pontiac muscle, including a 1963 Catalina Super Duty 421 Lightweight with aluminum body panels, three excellent examples of the revolutionary GTO Judge, and the rarest Firebird Trans Am, one of only eight 1969 T/A convertibles ever built. Mecum Auction is pleased to offer these eight very special cars from the Robert Lozins Collection at Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Classic Auction - 23rd Year at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds May 19-23, 2010.

ontiac’s position at the top of the Super Stock hierarchy was weakening. Ford, Chrysler and Pontiac began its 421 Super Duty engine production late in 1961, hand-building the 421 CI engines in a special tool room. By 1963 the Catalina 421 SD was the car to beat in Stock and Super Stock drag racing, but Pontiac upped the ante by offering a lightweight version of the Catalina employing aluminum body pieces for extensive weight savings. The Kimberly Blue 1963 421 SD Catalina presented here is a lightweight version with factory installed aluminum fenders, hood and bumpers, along with other
lightened pieces under the hood and Lexan windshield and rear window. The colorful tri-tone Blue interior is a radio-heater delete affair with auxiliary dashmounted gauges, optional factory tach and Hurst shifter. Rated at 405 horsepower, the 421 incorporates four-bolt mains, forged rods and crank, solid lifters, and NASCAR heads, with dual Carter four-barrels on an aluminum intake manifold. With a 4-Speed manual and low 4.30 gearing, this big Catalina SD lightweight is everything a racer could have wanted in a Pontiac in 1963, and everything a Pontiac collector could want today.
Highlights: - SD 421/405 HP engine - Dual quads from factory - Aluminum fenders, hood, bumpers and other pieces under hood from factory - Factory Lexan windshield and rear window - 4-Speed transmission - 4.30 Saf-T-Track

Driven by a 400 CI V-8 and Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission, it is optioned with factory air conditioning, custom trim package, power windows and antenna, remote-
release trunk lid, and power steering and disc brakes. An AM/FM stereo, bucket seats and console and Pontiac’s trademark burled woodgrain trim complete the interior appointments in this very clean and well detailed luxury ‘Bird.

he first Pontiac Trans Am was a low-profile offering introduced in 1969 with little fanfare, resulting in just 697 units sold. With the exception of factory specials, the rarest of all first-generation Firebirds are the eight Trans Am convertibles built that first year, which have become increasingly valuable over time. One of those eight is offered here in this marvelously restored example. Finished in trademark Cameo White with Tyrol Blue T/A stripes and badges, it sports a matching Blue interior and White top.

LOT S122 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge Convertible 400/366 HP, 4-Speed
When Pontiac Division GM John DeLorean finalized plans for the 1969 GTO Judge, he
specified Carousel Red as the default color to help quickly establish the car’s image in the public mind. It was a stroke of brilliance, as the color became so popular with buyers that only seventeen Judge convertibles left the factory in another color. One of only 108 ‘69 Judge convertibles built, the car offered here is one of those seventeen, and the only one finished in understated Mayfair Maize. The rest of this handsome convertible is pure Judge, with a 400/366 HP Ram Air III engine, Hurst-shifted 4-Speed manual and heavy duty 3.55 Saf-T-Track diff forming the driveline. Power windows and rear power antenna have been added to complement the Black interior factory outfitted with bucket seats, center console, Rally gauges and remote driver’s mirror; hideaway headlights and a hood-mounted tach are trademark GTO extras.

ew late-Sixties Detroit offerings struck a chord with the public like the 1969 GTO Judge. As usual, Jim Wangers worked his promotional magic on the Judge, producing what he later called “the world’s first music video,” a 60-second bit featuring a tune specially penned by Paul Revere and the Raiders and directed by a young Jerry Bruckheimer of Pirates of the Caribbean and CSI fame. The iconic Carousel Red 1969 Judge offered here is just as John DeLorean envisioned, a straightforward performer packing Ram Air III power, a Muncie 4-Speed and Saf-T-Track rear axle. The list of preferred options is bolstered by power steering and power front discs, an AM radio, remotecontrol driver’s mirror and hood tach, and the Rallye wheels have been upgraded with Goodyear

C
ar & Driver magazine described the 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 as being “in a class by itself,” a phrase that certainly applies to this amazingly original, ultra rare 1968 Ram Air I 4-Speed convertible. The car’s remarkable condition is explained in large part by the 19,314 actual miles showing on the odometer, and the rest of the story is in its long list of optional equipment, which begins with its rare 400/345 HP V-8, 4-Speed manual and 3.90 Saf-T-Track differential. Power front disc brakes work with Pontiac’s special ride and handling package and wide Goodyear Polyglas rubber for trademark Firebird handling, and the Black Custom Deluxe interior brims with luxury and performance touches: bucket seats with head rests, console, Rally gauges and Safeguard

LOT S12 6 1968 Pontiac GTO 2-Door Hardtop 400 CI, Automatic
Over forty years after first emerging from the production line, this 1968 GTO shows fewer than 15,000 miles on the odometer and still wears its original Verdero Green paint, both indicative of the great care lavished on this Pontiac classic. In fact, they don’t come much more original than this.
Power is delivered via a 400 CI V-8 and Turbo Hydra-Matic to a 3.36 Saf-T-Track rear end. The all-original Black interior sports bucket seats, power steering, console with Hurst Dual Gate shifter, tinted glass, AM radio, “TicToc-Tach” and two almost extinct dealer-installed accessories: an aftermarket reverb unit and 8-track tape player. Retractable headlight covers, a remote driver’s mirror and Rally II wheels with Redline tires round out the options on this highly original, low mileage collector-quality GTO.

Robert Lozins first laid eyes on this 1970 Firebird Trans Am at Huber Pontiac in Springfield, Illinois.
It belonged to the dealer’s son, who drove the car for years on a Certificate of Origin. Lozins purchased the car in an estate sale in 1994 and has cared for it ever since. It has received one repaint and new NOS striping at the dealership, and is otherwise original, with just 21,900 miles on the clock. Finished in trademark White with a full-length Blue stripe and Black interior, it features an engine-turned instrument panel, padded Formula steering wheel, Rally gauge cluster with tach and clock, console and remote mirror.
This is one of only 88 ’70 Trans Ams built with the optional 400/370 HP Ram Air IV engine, and one of just 59 with GM’s 400 Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission, a Saf-TTrack rear end completing the muscular powertrain. In addition, the car comes with the original punch card used to create the Protect-O-Plate.
