Going to Indianapolis to host the Spring Classic has been a pleasure for Mecum the past five years and this year, our 25th anniversary of the event, topped them all as consignment, sales, and attendance records were all shattered once again. After an amazing auction week at the fairgrounds, the company finished off the month of May participating in an Indy tradition as the primary sponsor of one of the top finishing cars of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race (see feature article on page 28.) Right after the weekend in North Little Rock, the double auction weekend is here - Bloomington Gold Corvette auction in St. Charles, Illinois and our St. Paul, Minnesota auction at MSRA’s Back to the 50’s event, both occurring June 22-23 (See lot listings at the back of this issue.) In excess of one million square feet of the Indiana State Fairgrounds were covered with over 2,900 automobiles, motorcycles, Road Art, and more as Mecum Auctions celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Classic Auction, May 15-20, 2012, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mecum Auctions celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Classic Auction, May 15-20, 2012, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Nearly 2,000 vehicles crossed the block at the Indiana State Fairgrounds but collectors know that you need more than cars to complete a collection. Buyers in Indy were willing to do what it took to get that piece of Road Art to bring their collection to life and with the top ten sales totaling $116,500 it shows. The top ten Road Art items show the variety
Mecum had to offer. Topping the list at number 1 was an extremely rare and beautifully restored Mopar Desk and Display (Lot S210) that sold for $18,000. Bids for the Bob’s Big Boy statue jumped by $4,000 increments when crossing the block and landed a final bid of $15,000. When the beautifully

restored 1950’s Bowling Game (Lot S97.1) made it to the block, The Dealmaker himself couldn’t even resist throwing a few balls down the lane. From beauties, to rarities or even just “must haves” Mecum had it all. Throughout the 6 day auction a wide array of vehicles and Road Art fell under the hammer. This premier race took place on the streets of Milwaukee, and has become the most celebrated and prestigious road course race of the early 20th Century. Vanderbilt Cup races were held from 1904 to 1916. We have invited all Vanderbilt Cup era cars to participate in our event! 1912 Vanderbilt Cup Race In 1903, one year before the first Vanderbilt Cup race was held, automobile racing began at the Wis. State Fairgrounds Speedway, now known as The Milwaukee Mile! As you’re undoubtedly aware, the Milwaukee Mile is the oldest continuously operated auto race track in the world! Communicating With Past Masters of Design
P
hil Reilly is not only a loyal Harry Miller Club member and yearly entrant in our Millers at Milwaukee event, but for the past two years has also been an Associate Sponsor of our annual vintage race car meet at the Milwaukee Mile. Reilly is a founding business partner in the auto restoration firm Phil Reilly & Company, and Reilly’s connections to Miller Club founders Bob Sutherland and David Uihlein go back to the early 1980’s. Reilly first met David Uihlein, Sr. at an Indy 500 event, and later shared restoration tips and support through cross country phone calls, as David worked on his own Alfa Romeo. We are pleased to feature Phil Reilly & Company, a highly successful restoration firm that has gained a formidable reputation for “simply remarkable work.” This year marks the 30th anniversary for Phil Reilly & Company, as well as the beginning of a new ownership role for their long-time employee, Brian Madden. Phil Reilly & Company was founded in 1982 by equal partners, Ross Cummings, Ivan Zaremba and Phil Reilly. The business plan focused on mechanical restoration and repair of high performance and racing cars, with a special emphasis on engines. The company has grown to 11 employees, as well as the three partners, who will continue with the company for the foreseeable future. The partners would say their specialty is, “Making cars and engines run and work the way they were designed to, without exception, compromise or excuse for
age or current use,” stated Reilly. “Brian is committed to the same goal, with the same team of talented mechanics and machinists; several of whom have worked with the company for more than 20 years.” According to Reilly, David Wallace, Zeke Prince and founding partner Ross Cummings, have long been the brain and talent trust at the company. “I believe their abilities with the Miller designs are simply remarkable.” Reilly reflected on the growth of his company, stating, “The very first job at Phil Reilly & Co. came with my first employee, Jim Stranberg. Jim, who later went on to become a preeminent Bugatti specialist with his High Mountain Classics, brought with him Bob Sutherland’s Miller 91 “Majestic Special”. That was my first contact with a Miller, and started an
enduring passion for the marquee. Since 1982 more than 25 Miller/Offenhauser projects have been through the shop, and it constitutes some of our finest work.” The Phil Reilly & Co. website highlights their business philosophy. “Vintage car restoration is a form of communicating with the past masters of automotive design and engineering.” Their portfolio includes many photos of their incredible restorations, with highlights of recognition

A
fter World War II, it wasn’t uncommon for a driver who cut his racing teeth in the Midget race car boom of post-war America to make the jump to the “big cars.” One driver who made the leap was Texas driver, Bill Homeier. Born on August 31st, 1918, Homeier was a native of Rock Island, Texas and like many in the post-war 1940’s moved to southern California to race midgets and chase the big purses. In the late-1940’s, midget racing was king in California.
trivia answer, finishing in 33rd place, but completed 74 laps (184-miles), the most for a last place finisher. During his pit stop, his foot slipped off the clutch, causing the car to lurch into the wall, bending the suspension to a point that the car couldn’t continue. The following year, he drove Ernie Ruiz’s Travelon Trailer Kurtis KK500B and was unable to crack the
Over the next two seasons, he drove the familiar red car with the black tail in 13 events, making the field in several with a top finish of 5th at Sacramento in 1959 and 9th at Langhorne the following year. In 1958, Eddie Kuzma built a lightweight, independent suspension roadster for J.C. Agajanian and his driver, Troy Ruttman. Wrenched by ace mechanic, Frank

Homeier did not appear on the track in 1956 and 1957. In 1958, he tried two cars including the former Jones & Maley (now known as Safety Auto Glass Spl.) Kurtis KK500C he drove in the 1954 “500.”
McGurk, the car just wouldn’t make speed at the Brickyard. After failing to make the race twice, the car was brought to A.J. Watson’s shop in Glendale, CA where over the winter it was completely rebuilt in a more conventional manner. Norm Hall who owned the car, entered the car at the Speedway with the inimitable Ridgewood Builders on the hood for the 1960 race. Early in the month, Hall was close on speed but not fast enough to make the race. Chief mechanic, Bob Higman replaced Hall (the owner) with Homeier.
In California, he met tough competition, racing against the likes of Bill Vukovich, Sam Hanks, Troy Ruttman, Rodger Ward, Don Freeland, Bobby Ball, Danny Oakes, Allen Heath and others. In 1948, Homeier won at tracks such as Tulare, Fresno and Balboa driving the V-8 of Mike Casale. Driving in the AAA midget ranks in 1953, Homeier finished his best in points: second to Leroy Warriner of Indianapolis. Homeier’s wins that year included, West Palm Beach, Heidelberg, St. Louis and Springfield. In fact, he won the first two races of the following year at Gardena. He even won a 100-lap midget race at the tough Langhorne track in 1958, overall winning 12 national midget races (AAA/
USAC). It was in 1953 Homeier made it to the big track, Indianapolis. He passed his driver’s test driving the Coast Grain Special, a Lesovsky upright dirt car which he was unable to get up to qualifying speed. On bump day, he tried to squeak the Cal Connell Special, a Kurtis KK500A with a trick special-reverse torque Cadillac into the starting field, but burned a piston on a late qualifying attempt. In 1954 he made his first “500,” driving the Jones & Maley Special. It was in this race he became a
It wasn’t easy making the show at Indianapolis. In 1959, Homeier fell short as he lost an engine in Ollie Prather’s Go-Kart Kurtis 500G-2 on his second qualifying lap. Later that summer he picked up a ride, driving for Greek ship-owner, Tassi Vatis, who owned an aging Kurtis 4000.
Homeier got in the car on the second weekend and proceeded to squeak into the 33-car field. On race day the car completed

the 500 miles to finish 13th and placed Homeier in the exclusive Champion Spark Plug 100-mile-an-hour club. After several marriages and two sons, William, Jr. and Carl, he married Helen and in 1962 drove
the final two races of his career. He took a teaching position at Cypress-Fairbanks High School outside of Houston, as an automotive instructor and received his teaching degree from Texas A&M. In the

arry Miller was quite simply the greatest creative figure in the history of the American racing car. His engines dominated the American oval-track racing for almost more than half of a century. He created the great school of American thoroughbred engine design, which was faithfully followed by those who sought to outdo him. He was the originator, in the United States, of the racing car as an art object. Miller had a passion for metalwork and machinery that soared above and
beyond of all the practical consideration. Parts of his machines that never would be seen by eyes other than those of the builders were formed and finished with loving care. David V. Uihlein, Sr., founder of the Harry Miller Club, sought to bring recognition to harry Miller and his accomplishments while sharing his great race car and engine designs with younger generations. Miller based cars and/or engines dominated championship competition in this country during the 1920’s, winning thirty-nine Indianapolis 500 races!

CHRIS MILIUs wears many hats under the Mecum Auctions umbrella. During each auction you can find him guiding cars onto the block, but off the block is where his true responsibility lies. Chris maintains and operates the fleet of trucks and trailers that travel from auction to auction, and ensures everything for set up arrives on time. Chris hangs his hat in Minnesota, but he also calls the interstate highway system home because more often than not, he’s headed to the next auction. Chris says that he “Really enjoys the fast-paced action and the close-knit camaraderie of the Mecum team!”
DAVID NEWHARDT is a recent full-time hire at Mecum Auctions, but he’s been taking photos for the company for the last four years. Originally from Chicago, he moved from Pasadena, California to southern Wisconsin to be one of the company’s full time photographers and writers. During his life-long automotive career, he’s written 14 automotive books, and was a staff photographer at Motor Trend magazine. He says, “The crew at Mecum are the best group I’ve ever worked with. ’08 CADILLAC CTS-V by KANE ROGERS
After years of drift and an alarming drop in sales through the Nineties, Cadillac division and the GM board of directors hatched a plan to resurrect the brand and rescue the oldest automobile manufacturer in America. After a number of false starts, in 2003 the company found new direction in the CTS sports sedan, whose chiseled features were the product of Cadillac’s new “Art and Design” styling approach. That was followed by the highperformance CTS-V, a 400 HP roadburner whose astonishing performance had been honed at the famed Nurburgring. The CTS-V showed that Cadillac had re-established itself as a luxury performance leader, a point it pressed home in 2004 by entering a two-car factory team in the SCCA. That first year of competition was well served by testing a

prototype under full racing conditions during 2003. Once the concept was thoroughly tested, the racing program was approved and work proceeded building the number two and three cars. The investment paid off handsomely in the Cadillacs’ first race at the Sebring 12 Hours, when Max Angelelli took Chassis No. 3 to the GT class win, immediately followed by teammate Andy Pilgrim in Chassis No. 2, who bogged at the start and then tore through the field of 28 cars in a remarkable show of dominance. The 2004 season ended with Team Cadillac scoring second place in the SPEED GT Manufacturer’s Championship after taking five podium finishes including two more wins at Mosport and Road Atlanta. Team Cadillac won the SPEED GT Manufacturer’s Championship

in 2005, with Max Papis winning at Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca, Canadian Ron Fellows winning at Mosport and Angelelli at Lime Rock. Consistency paid off for Pilgrim, who took the GT Driver’s Championship without winning a single race. The team captured only two wins in 2006, first by Ron Fellows at Long Beach and then newcomer Lawson Aschenbach, who scored a win at Road Atlanta on the way to six podiums and was declared the SPEED World Challenge Rookie of the Year. Cadillac repeated as the series champion in 2007 under the new direction of former Viper racing manager Cory Gehling, with Pilgrim finishing second in the driver’s standings, followed by Aschenbach in third. With the looming bankruptcy of GM, in 2008 the Cadillac SPEED
World Challenge team was dismantled, but improved fortunes saw Cadillac return to the series in 2011 and again for the 2012 season with brand new CTS-V coupes. Cadillac has experienced a true renaissance in the course of a rocky and tumultuous decade, thanks in very large part to the success of the factory racing efforts led by this very machine, which at the hands of driver Andy Pilgrim was the class of the field in the most competitive racing series in North America. Built by Pratt & Miller Engineering & Fabrication of New
Hudson, Michigan, the Number 8 Andy Pilgrim Cadillac CTS-V factory race car began life as a body-in-white, but the finished product is an engineering marvel. The shell is sectioned over the chassis rails and the floor pan and front wheel well openings raised to lower the car and thereby improve its aerodynamics. The firewall was moved rearward and the engine dropped to improve front-rear weight bias and lower the center of gravity, and rear wheelwell tubs installed to accommodate the huge Toyo P335/30R18 rear tires (P335/30R18s are used up front, with factory-look 18-inch O.Z. racing wheels all around). Pratt & Miller installed a full chrome moly roll cage and modified the floor pan to accept

the Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission, which is straight from the Cadillac parts bin but is mounted on its side for better packaging. The dash is carbon fiber, which also plays a significant role in the car’s racy exterior, which uses the material for every body panel except the roof, which is the required stock steel unit. Cadillac also took advantage of Pratt & Miller’s vast experience with Corvette Racing’s engine program, working a number of modifications to the stock LS6 engine. The stroke is shortened by 9.0 millimeters and the bore increased by 6.3mm, approximating the stock displacement while allowing an increase in maximum engine speed from 6,500 RPM to over 7,900, although the SCCA limited it to 7,000 after its 2004 debut at Sebring. The result is an increase in power to well over 500 horses. Finally, the car uses mostly stock CTS-V suspension components such as the halfshafts and differential case, while employing special springs, shocks, sway bars and bushings. Presented as it ran in 2008 with Team Remington livery, the car remains one of the most aggressive-appearing devices ever to compete in the SPEED World Challenge. More importantly, it still qualifies for SCCA competition in the new Super Touring class created in 2009. It will cross the auction block Saturday August 18, 2012 in Monterey. M

IT’S SILVER AND IT’S THE KING Silver King tractors were some of the most advanced tractors of their time. They were originally built under the name “Plymouth” after the small Ohio town where they were produced. The parent company, Fate-Root-Heath, built clay machinery, yard locomotives, and equipment for sharpening reel-type mower blades. During the Depression, business slowed, so the firm turned to agricultural products, namely tractors. The first model debuted in 1934. After a tangle with the Chrysler Corporation over the Plymouth name, the company made the
decision to change the name of their tractors to Silver King. Though Silver King was a small company, they were always innovative and embraced the cutting edge of new technology.
such speeds make these tractors perfect for tractor rides and parades. Henry Ford even purchased Silver King tractors before he made the deal with Harry Ferguson, saying that they (Silver King’s) are “The best tractor on the Market”. The tractor presented here is a 1948 Model 42 that was a real barn find in Central Indiana. This tractor, along with a very rare Silver King Orchard, will be featured at the Gone Farmin’ Vintage Tractor Auction on August 3 and 4 in Walworth, Wisconsin. M
Though Silver King was a small company, they were always innovative and embraced the cutting edge of new technology. The “Plymouth” tractor was the first tractor designed for the use of rubber tires. that point in the season. That great finish at Indy was followed by a 5th place finish at Detroit’s Belle Isle circuit, where once again the team fought adversity to climb from 16th on the grid. With ten races left to run on the IndyCar 2012 calendar, Dana Mecum and everyone at Mecum Auctions anticipate many more exciting moments and yet more success in their new partnership with Panther DRR, especially with the experienced crew assembled by Reinbold and Buhl and the veteran Oriol Servia at the wheel of the No. 22 Dallara-Chevrolet.

The consignment department is always available by phone to assist in any way, and we welcome your calls. Good quality photographs are needed to be able to properly present your entry in the best
way possible. In addition, the vehicle description is needed on the contract which is used to correctly describe your entry on our website and car card which is placed in the vehicle window onsite. This information is also provided to the auctioneer and is
stand out as a quality vehicle worthy of high bidder interest. This advance preparation also includes a well-charged battery and fresh gas. And spending time with your entry onsite to show the car and answer questions to bidders is extremely helpful too. When it is your time on the block, taking the reserve off early will keep more bidders active and will maximize selling price. This month’s title doesn’t refer to the premise of the hit movie, but rather lighting your vehicle for photography. In prior issues, I’ve touched upon the importance of your car, motorcycle, boat, etc., being well lit for promotional use. A wellilluminated vehicle will catch a buyer’s eye more quickly, improving the chances for big dollars on the auction block. Putting the sun over the photographers shoulder is a time-tested setup for even illumination. But there are times when a touch of drama can increase the appeal of the ride. And the easiest way to inject drama is to sidelight a car. The technique is pretty straightforward; put the sun to the side of the camera. Rather than covering the vehicle with flat light across the entire view, side lighting can emphasize body curves by showing part of the structure lit, the other part 32

in shade. This technique works well in the early morning and late afternoon when the sun is lower on the horizon. It’s a rare day when an automobile looks good when photographed at high noon. Harsh shadows beneath the car
whether it’s reflected light from a wall, or a bit of camera flash. You don’t want the shadows to be so dark that you can’t see detail. This technique is a little more work than putting your car in a parking lot on your lunch break and

will do nothing to enhance the design, and the sheer brightness of mid-day light will tend to wash out most colors. One more tip; when you use side lighting, try to fill in the shadows with a little light, MECUM.COM
snapping a photo, but the results are well worth the effort. And when you can make your vehicle stand out in a crowd, odds are good that interest on the auction block is going to be that much better. All because of a little sidelight. M
