hile many automotive collectors target one make or model, William Ockerlund’s tastes follow a wide range of enthusiasms that include just about every form of automotive conveyance ever conceived, from classic-era muscle cars to vintage racing snowmobiles to an old Meyers Manx dune buggy. Ockerlund bought his first “collector” car, a 1969 Z28, in the late Seventies, setting the basic trajectory for future purchases. “I’ve always liked the early Camaros, but over the years I’ve just bought what I liked, including lots of American muscle. I was attracted to Oldsmobiles of that period because I like how they drive in comparison to the Chevelles, for example. The factory drag cars appeal to me, but then so do the old Trans Am cars - I have a Shelby and an Alfa for vintage road racing, and lately I’ve been going toward road racing and foreign cars. But the greater percentage has always been from the late Sixties and early Seventies - the cars I grew up with.” There is, of course, one more quality that Bill Ockerlund’s various machines have in common: each one is a superb example of its kind. Mecum Auction is pleased to offer this unique collection at Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Classic Auction - 23rd Year at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds May 19-23, 2010.

E
455/370 HP, 4-Speed
Oldsmobile’s vaunted 442 reached its performance peak in 1970 with the W-30 package, at the heart of which
was a force-fed 455 cubic inch 370-horsepower V8. Balanced and blueprinted by the factory, it was one of the most powerful engines in the GM lineup and, powering the fine-looking and well-appointed 4-4-2, it added a real wallop to what was already one of the best musclecars ever. The 442 W-30 offered here is in outstanding as-original condition, its Viking Blue finish accented with White W-30 striping, dramatic contrasting Red wheel houses and a handsome matching Blue interior. Despite the popularity of Oldsmobile’s Dual Gate automatic, this example sports a close-ratio, Hurst-shifted Muncie four-speed to back up the big 455’s 370 horses and 500 lb-ft of torque. Power steering, heavy-duty suspension, five-spoke Magnum-style wheels and period-correct Firestone Wide Ovals assure the 4-4-2’s trademark handling and ride on this quality example of Dr. Oldsmobile’s most famous performance brew.
Highlights: - 455/370 HP W-30 - 4-Speed - W27 rear housing cover - Magnum-style five-spoke wheels - Viking Blue with White striping, Blue interior - Power steering - Bucket seats and console - 4-spoke Sport wheel - AM radio and 8-track tape deck - Immaculate

350/245 HP, 4-Speed
The last of the second-generation Z28s, the 1974 version carried on with the previous year’s 350 CI
hydraulic-cam small block that still delivered a respectable 245 horsepower at 5,200 rpm. Combined with a Muncie 4-Speed and the Z28’s proven F41 suspension, the car was still a very capable sport coupe that loved to gobble up twisty roads. Purchased new from Unger Motor Co., this is a highly original, three owner 27,000 mile, Z28 LT. The car offered here is all original with only a partial repaint and stripe package added by the second owner to match the car that was used in the original promotional brochure. It is finished in Bright Gold Metallic with the optional LT trim package that added extra interior lighting, woodgrain interior accents and extra insulation in the engine compartment, trunk and doors. Documentation includes: original build sheet, original dealer order form, vehicle inspection form, original temporary registration, down payment receipt, new vehicle warranty book, emission control system book,
maintenance schedule book, and owners manual. Recent sales data confirms that second generation Camaros have established their presence in the collector car arena.. 455/345 HP, Automatic
Perhaps the rarest of Oldsmobile’s 442 “W” cars was the W-25 convertible. While not as edgy a powerplant as that in the hairy-chested W-30, the W-25 came equipped with the already torquey and powerful 455 engine. Fed by twin scoops at the leading edge of the striped fiberglass hood, its Forced Air Induction system utilized a high-flow Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and low-restriction dual exhaust to produce 345 horsepower. The 1970 W-25 convertible offered here exemplifies that formula in great style. Rally Red with White striping, it sports a scooped fiberglass hood, chromed dual exhaust trumpets and Rallye I wheels wrapped in Firestone Wide Ovals; a rear spoiler and aluminum W-27 differential cover are rare and desirable extras. The interior is an attractive combination of Pearl White seating and panels, black dash and carpets and burled walnut accents. Optional equipment includes power steering and brakes, four-spoke Formula steering wheel, factory AM radio and sport mirrors.
Highlights: - 455/345 HP V-8 - 400 Turbo-Hydramatic - Rally Red with White striping - White top - Parchment bucket seat interior - Rallye I wheels - White-letter Firestone Wide Ovals - Power steering and brakes - 4-spoke Formula wheel - Sport mirrors - AM radio - Excellent presentation

455/310 HP, 4-Speed
Just as federal laws were emasculating the muscle car, Pontiac put the power back in the Trans
Am with the SD455 V-8. Hand-assembled at the factory, the SD455 featured a reinforced block, special cam, aluminum pistons, large valves and free-flowing exhaust. Rated at 310 horsepower, it was closer to 370, unmatched by any rival. The SD455 was also expensive, making it very rare; only 252 Trans Ams were so equipped. The model offered here is a member of that exclusive club. Painted Cameo White on all original sheet metal, this beautiful ‘Bird sports a Black interior with a distinctive engine-turned instrument panel, padded Formula wheel and console-mount shifter. Optioned with tinted glass, stereo radio, roof molding and lighting group, this incomparable vintage Trans Am is documented by the Pontiac Historical Society.

Royal Pontiac of Royal Oak, Michigan was the epicenter of Pontiac performance beginning in the late 1950s. This success
translated to increased over-the-counter parts sales and the introduction of the Bobcat tuning kit. Specially developed to wring maximum power from the Pontiac V8s, the kit included extra-thin head gaskets, a distributor advance curve kit, intake heat riser blocks, richer carb jetting and positive-locking rocker hold-down nuts for more accurate valve adjustments. The conversion took about five hours and resulted in notable performance gains. Some dealer-equipped cars wore special Bobcat badges and paint treatment.
The Tyrol Blue 1967 GTO convertible offered here was purchased from a Pennsylvania dealer who performed the Bobcat conversion for the buyer. It is a equipped with a Ram Air 400/360 HP engine, 4-Speed, Saf-T-Track rear end and power steering and brakes. A crisp White soft top, polished Hurst aluminum wheels and Redline tires give it great cosmetics, while inside the Black bench seat passenger compartment comprises a woodgrain Sport wheel and dash trim, AM/FM radio and 8-track and a floor-mounted factory Hurst shifter. The car is PHS documented and retains all original drivetrain, sheet metal and interior, features that have earned it a GTO Nationals win and feature coverage in Muscle Car Review and Muscle Car Color History GTO.
