THE MECUM
MARATHON 2013
KISSIMMEE 2013 AUCTION RESULTS Mecum Auctions’ record-setting 10-day auction, held January 1827, exceeded all expectations transforming more than 100 acres of land at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, into the nation’s collector car epicenter. A total of 3,337 lots filled every building and 15 acres of tents with a total of 2,610 cars crossing the auction block and a huge selection of Road Art and memorabilia. With 1,811 vehicles sold, an astounding 70 percent sellthrough rate was achieved and total sales for the event reached nearly $75 million. “Plenty of auction companies in the past have laid claim to putting on the Super Bowl of auctions,” Mecum President Dana Mecum stated. “Mecum has gone where no auction company has ever gone before by hosting the first true collector car marathon, and we did it successfully. Kissimmee broke 8

last year’s record by more than 25 percent offering 2,610 cars on our march to 3,000, and we look forward to reaching our goal of breaking the 3,000 car barrier next year in the sunny state of Florida.” More than 75,000 people flooded the auction grounds to take part in the festival-like atmosphere of the largest collector car auction in the world. Whether they stayed for three or four hours, or they had gas and oil in their veins and stayed for two weeks with motorhome in tow, families with children of all ages took advantage of the beautiful

Florida weather and the opportunity to see some of the best cars on the planet. The vast array of quality offerings included some of the best the Kissimmee auction has ever seen. Mecum’s General and Operations Manager Harold Gerdes plays a huge role in getting an event like Kissimmee on its feet. “To put this event on is like putting on a professional basketball game and a rock concert at the same time and doing it every night, 10 nights straight,” Gerdes explained. Thirty-two hours of the colossal event was broadcast live on Velocity, a Discovery Network, allowing those at home to take in the auction floor action right alongside the Mecum family and have a chance to be part of this truly historic event. Within the massive lineup of vehicles, three private collections were featured which nabbed eight
of the top spots for highest hammer prices. Several record-setting sales were made, but sitting at the head of the Top Ten sales list is a 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster CSX3301 (Lot S155) from the Collins Collection, which sold for $735,000. The car’s glove box was signed “One of the rarest” by Carroll Shelby himself, and was one of only 392 built. With an extremely low 6,755 miles, this car was the first to be manufactured in the third production group of 427 Cobras. Mecum’s “The Bid Goes On” department made the second-highest sale just a few days after the auction ended bringing a $550,000 sale for an ultra-rare and multiple-award winning Red/Red, 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Convertible (Lot S172) dubbed the “Bounty-Hunter.” An all-original and unrestored
8,000-mile 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 from the John Justo Collection (Lot S155) claimed the thirdhighest sale exchanging hands at an astonishing $417,000. A recipient of the Shelby Originality Award,
MECUM.COM
one of the highest honors available in the Ford collector hobby, this meticulously-documented car is a shining example of its breed. From the coveted Rick Davis collection, Lot S132 hammered at

$400,000 as number 12 of only 16 1966 Ford Mustang SCCA Group 2 A/Sedan Racers. In its heyday, the car took first at more than one race and placed in several with owner John McComb behind the wheel, and was even featured on the cover of the December 1966 issue of “Sports Car Graphic.” After disappearing for 28 years, the car was found in a garage in Texas and restored to its original 1966 specifications, one of nine known remaining examples. The fifth-highest sale went to Lot S123, a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda hammering at $320,000. Another from the John Justo Collection, this Cuda is of the most original and highly optioned of its kind, earning the Bloomington Gold ZZenith Originality Award as an all-original, unrestored car boasting a mere 12,000 miles. Featured in last month’s edition of the Monthly, a 1963 Chevrolet

Corvette ZO6 (Lot S128), another from the Rick Davis Collection, nabbed the sixth top sale with a $310,000 hammer price. One of only 199 produced, the original, unrestored Riverside Red beauty is a multiple-award winner and features a matching numbers engine. At $275,000, John Justo’s 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe hammered in for the seventhhighest sale of the 1,811 vehicles sold in Kissimmee. The unrestored car featuring a mere 5,500 original miles, sports the desirable Riverside Red with Red interior color combination and, in addition to winning several awards, was formerly on display at the National

Corvette Museum. Lot S117 brought a $250,000 sale as a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible, also from the John Justo Collection. The cars Tri-Power 427/435 HP engine and 4-speed manual transmission combined with only 8,000 miles on its odometer makes this unrestored original a collector’s dream. Justo’s 1962 Chevrolet Corvette Big Brake Fuelie Tanker (Lot F245) grabbed a spot in the Top Ten as well hammering at $242,000. This fully realized performance machine is a member of the Bloomington Gold Special Collection; it has also received Bloomington 24K Gold Certification, NCRS Top Flight and
Duntov Mark of Excellence awards and the Chevy Vettefest Triple Crown. Rounding out the Top Ten at $220,000 is the newest build on the list, Lot S182, a brand-new, nevertitled 2005 Ford GT sold on MSO. Coming from a Ford dealer’s private collection, the car has less than 600 miles on its 5.4L/550 HP supercharged V-8 and sports a 6-speed manual transaxle. M

A PIECE FOR EVERY POCKET
Road Art and memorabilia collections tend to take on the characteristics of their owners through the collectors’ process of personally selecting each piece; this is what makes every collection unique. Car enthusiasts Fran and Ron Green have built their own assortment of Road Art and memorabilia to dressup and enhance the walls, floors and ceiling of their private museum – the home to their impressive grouping of cars. The couple has now decided to part with the vehicles they’ve so meticulously cared for, along
with their collection of Road Art and memorabilia housed in the Boynton Beach, Florida, building. With over 1,000 pieces of Road Art and memorabilia available, based on sheer volume alone, there is most certainly a piece for every pocket. The assemblage features a massive variety and includes everything from household items to decorative collectibles. The lineup of sports, movie and racing memorabilia is impressive in itself, and then add in all the vintage signs, posters, bicycles and collector items and the MECUM.COM
selection becomes staggering. With absolutely no reserves on the cars or the memorabilia, the entire museum assortment will be sold, with each item destined to become part of someone else’s personal collection. The things that once set the stage and backdrop for The Verde Classics Museum will now be disbursed among bidders eager to dress up their own ‘private museums.’ Register as a bidder now to get in on all the action at our upcoming Verde Classics Auction this February 22-23. We began our sixth year of live TV coverage on Velocity by Discovery with our hit show “Mecum Auto Auctions, Muscle Cars and More,” at our Kissimmee, Florida, auction in January. With 32 hours of on-air action over a four-day period, life in the spotlight gets pretty frenzied, and I enjoy every minute of it. Our typical work day begins at 10 a.m. sharp with the show’s announcers and the production company going over the schedule including timing, features, sponsor obligations, etc.; this is referred to as the daily format. The crew meal immediately follows and is usually wrapped up around 11 a.m. At 12:15 p.m. we are “in position” to preview and/ or approve any on-screen graphics while we rehearse the opening of the show. If everything goes smoothly, we might just get 10-15

My role on the show as Commentator/Analyst allows me to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for collector cars of all types. It’s both an honor and a privilege I take very seriously! Joining me on air are three consummate professionals that I consider to be the absolute best. Scott Hoke is our host and has enjoyed a 25-year career in TV, radio and as a PA announcer at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His ability to introduce each entry and to seamlessly transition between breaks is astonishing and greatly appreciated. One of just 338 produced in 1961, this rare and beautiful Chrysler 300G convertible won AACA First Place honors in 2002 and in 2004 was awarded AACA Grand National certification, confirming its status as one of the finest of its kind. The last in a series of brilliant designs by Virgil Exner to employ the trademark fins for which he was famous, the 1961 Chrysler 300G featured a new front end treatment, flipping the rounded trapezoid grille to accommodate new canted quad headlights and a straight front bumper for a cleaner look. The 300 was always a luxury car with muscle, and the G continued that tradition with a long list of standard features that included an impressive 413/375 HP V-8 with a unique cross-ram intake system mounting two

Finished in Mardi Gras Red, this 300G sports a luxurious Tan leather 2+2 interior with a full-length console, pushbutton transmission controls and the classic AstraDome instrument cluster. A DAY IN
THUNDER BAY
When looking for real barn finds, you never know when or where an adventure will come along. The prospect of finding a collection of tractors arose just a few days before we were set to head out to December’s Kansas City auction. In this case, our adventure would take us across the border into Thunder Bay, Ontario. My friend Jim called me about a collection of tractors he had seen on the Internet. I immediately called the owner to investigate the situation and discuss what he wanted to do; his name was John. He made it clear that he wanted to sell all the tractors at one event, rather than trying to sell them off one at a time. He estimated that he had more than 85 tractors but wasn’t exactly sure. My level of curiosity was off the charts, but I couldn’t look at the tractors firsthand until the following week, 20
MECUMMONTHLY
after our Kansas City auction. John agreed to put a list of the tractors together and email it to me, and talk with me again after the auction the following Tuesday. Tuesday finally came and I got back in touch with John to discuss what we could do. I didn’t want to leave home for long after having just returned from Kansas City, so I planned a quick weekend trip to take a look at the collection. I asked my wife Carrie if she wanted to go on an adventure, and she was all in. I called John back and told him the plan was to arrive Friday night and meet him first thing Saturday morning; he said in his Northern accent “That’d be good, hey.” Friday morning after a couple of delays at the office, we set out north. After hours of driving, we finally got to the border a little after dark and made our way into MECUM.COM
Ontario. Thunder Bay is only a few miles past the border and in no time we had cruised around the town and found a good local place to have dinner. After we ate, we drove toward the bay and got a room in an old hotel on the water. We stepped out of the hotel Saturday morning to begin the day, and I don’t think I remember ever feeling such a chill. I was ready for the cold, but this was downright frigid. Despite the subzero temperature, the view of the bay as the sun came up was amazing. The cargo ships on the horizon and an old lighthouse in the bay made the scene even more memorable. Once we got going it was quite ironic that the only place we could find for breakfast was Dairy Queen. After 20 minutes of searching, we finally found a place that had a hot breakfast. I was in a hurry to go straight to the tractors,
The Real Barn Finds DAN MECUM
but Carrie talked me into stopping for extra socks and hand warmers, which turned out to be a life saver later in the day. We were less than two miles from our destination when we left the store in search of the “big green building on the right” full of tractors. We rolled up through the snow and met John Buchanan. His tractors filled the building and the tractor models that lined a second story shelf along the wall made it quite a sight to see. The variety was huge with everything from professionally restored tractors to beautiful originals, mixed in with a few restoration tractors. Our plan was to inventory the lot so we could sit down with John and know exactly what we had. I climbed around the tractors with a flashlight and read off the serial numbers while Carrie wrote them down. She had her pen wrapped
in hand warmers so it would keep writing in the cold. After only about 15 tractors in, the pen wouldn’t write anymore, so we went to the café across the street to warm up. John was already at the café enjoying some coffee with friends; they got a chuckle out of our woes with the pen and handed us a pencil. It seems like common sense looking back, but now I know one of the tricks of working up north. We went back to finish taking inventory while John waited at the café. It was cold, but Carrie and I had fun working together and accounting for all the tractors. We headed back over to the café where John was waiting when we had finished, but this time he was by himself. In a matter of minutes we made a deal to bring the tractors back to one of our MECUM.COM
Gone Farmin’ auctions. There were many unknown details and unanswered questions, like how we were going to transport all of the tractors and what it entailed to get them across the border. I knew the answers would come eventually and it was time to strike a deal, so like my Dad always says, “Sometimes you have to shoot first and aim second.” John Buchanan’s collection of more than 90 tractors will be offered Friday, April 5 at 11 a.m. central at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, Iowa. The collection will highlight the Friday portion of the two-day auction event. More than 300 vintage signs and farm relics will also be offered Friday, along with 150 tractors on Saturday. The event will also be broadcast live on RFD TV. M

BREATHING ROOM
Insider’s Scoop
by DAVID NEWHARDT
Like people, photos need some breathing room. Or rather, the subject needs a bit of elbow room. Photos of people tend to look better when the entire person is in the frame. Cars aren’t far different. I’ll explain; sometimes we see photography where the vehicle fills the frame. I mean, it really fills the frame. Take a look at the first image; there’s virtually zero room around the car. The poor
vehicle looks cramped and kind of squinchy. Everyone wants their ride to be presented in the best possible way, and clearly, the car is not happy in such confined quarters. The cure? Step back a pace or two and allow some space around the car. Check out the second photo of the same vehicle. It’s a more balanced image, where the spatial relationship between the subject and background are
MECUM.COM
more equal. If the photographer steps back a bit too far, we can crop the photo for maximum effectiveness. All that’s needed is a bit of breathing room in the photo. But if there’s no room around the car, the photo might look like that picture of Aunt Myrtle with the top of her head cut off. With a little breathing room, everyone, and everything, looks better. M

Sold new by East Point Chevrolet in East Point, Georgia, this 1968 Chevrolet Biscayne is reputed to have been purchased by a Forest Park, Georgia, resident involved in the bootlegging business. As the story goes, the car’s owner eventually landed in jail, his worldly possessions confiscated but for this car, which escaped the revenuers’ clutches after it was hidden underground. Whatever the veracity of that tale, this well-documented and exceptionally well-preserved Biscayne remains virtually as fresh as the day it was built. It has been part of a succession of high-quality collections, including those of Pat McGroder, Kenn Funk, to the Petersen Automotive Museum and then on to Dennis Higginbotham. Described by Muscle Car Enthusiast Magazine as “the ultimate muscle car 30
MECUMMONTHLY
sleeper,” it is one of fewer than 100 produced with the L72 Turbo Jet 427/425 HP big block engine, in this case backed by a Hurst-shifted Muncie 4-speed manual transmission and 3.55 Positraction rear end. This car is believed to be the only 1968 factory Tuxedo Black L72 Biscayne known to exist. Most importantly, it is entirely original, with just 720 miles on the odometer. Rolling on Blackwall tires mounted on painted steel wheels and adorned with dog dish hub caps, the car’s true potential is evidenced only by the unobtrusive “427” badges next to the front side marker lights. MECUM.COM
The Black interior is the model of minimalist design: bench seat, radio delete and an optional gauge package comprising fuel, oil, temperature and battery gauges and an in-dash tachometer. Fully documented with the original dealer invoice, delivery checklist, Protect-O-Plate, a copy of original title, the owner’s manual and dealer brochure, this sinister-looking Biscayne is a singular example of Chevrolet’s full-size stealth street machine. As Lot S122 it will cross the auction block on Saturday, May 18th during Dana Mecum’s 26th Original Spring Classic auction in Indianapolis. M
